The Secret

1
[suspenseful music playing]
- [bird calls]
- [wind blowing]
[bell tolling]
[liquid pouring]
[glass bottles clinking]
- [Liv] Grandma?
- Mm-hmm?
When you and grandpa met each other,
how did you know he was the right one?
Oh, I just think we knew.
After all, we grew up together.
It's a small island, so
So I think I think it was just destiny.
When were you last in Copenhagen?
Ah
Before I had kids. Long time ago.
Don't you ever wonder
what life would be like
over there instead of here?
[pensive music playing]
In Copenhagen?
Never.
It's big, and noisy, and dirty.
[scoffs]
Full of people.
It's not a place for me.
My life is here.
Our life is here.
We have a responsibility.
To protect all of this beauty.
No one else
can do it.
Us. You and me.
And so, we can dream of Copenhagen
and other places
as much as we want.
But those places aren't for us.
Or people from those places.
Right?
[vehicle approaching]
[ominous music playing]
[whispering] They've taken Anders.
[ominous music intensifies]
[ominous music builds to a climax]
[theme music playing]
[Kasper] Make sure it doesn't get out.
[Jose] Leave if you're gonna be like that.
- [door rumbling]
- [creature purring]
Jose. Jose. It's over there.
- [creature purring]
- [somber music playing]
Feeling better?
I brought some food.
Aren't you hungry?
Uh. That's disgusting!
What?
I think it's already eaten.
[ominous music playing]
[Jose] Is that a
[Kasper] Yeah, it was a cat.
[creature cooing]
You can't be near that thing,
it's dangerous.
[creature cooing]
It didn't do it.
Do you think the cat ate itself?
I don't know. It might've.
It kills, Jose.
You'll never hurt me, right?
[creature purring]
We're friends. You and me.
You must be hungry.
I brought bacon.
- [creature yelps]
- Oh, are you okay?
- [creature shrieks]
- Come on.
I'll help you.
[shrieking continues]
You still not feeling well?
Shh. Shh.
- [creature cooing]
- Yeah.
Relax.
You're okay.
[creature cooing]
Shh. There, there.
[creature groans] Jos
Well, it looks like
we're gonna have to give you a name.
[creature cooing]
We've always loved this place, Karen.
We've lived respectfully
with nature and sacrificed.
But so did Anders, and look at him.
[group chattering indistinctly]
This was the first attack
on one of us in 15 years.
It will be the last.
We have an idea
about what triggered the attack.
And we're taking action.
Restoring the balance.
[whispering] You will be protected.
It is my duty.
I promise you, John and you, Lisbeth.
I will fix this.
This is Årmandsø.
And our community
is the highest priority no matter what.
[islanders, scattered] Yeah.
We live in
an unbreakable bond with nature.
Let's celebrate that bond.
And let us honor
the great sacrifice Anders made.
[Karen chanting]
[islanders join in]
[chanting music intensifies]
[music fades]
[creature munching]
[Jose] How many do you think there are?
Behind the fence?
I have no idea.
[somber music playing]
I think they lock them up.
Who?
The islanders. Well
It's just mean if they do.
They shouldn't be locked up
behind those fences.
We're free. They should be too.
Maybe it's not just to lock them up.
It might be to protect us.
Against what? That?
Seriously! Get a grip.
[creature purring]
What's wrong?
[creature cooing]
Still hungry?
I've got no more.
[purring] Kee-ko.
Kee-Ko. I'll call you that.
[Kee-Ko purring]
Kee-Ko.
I'll look out for you, Kee-Ko.
I'll get some more food.
Back soon.
[Kee-ko cooing]
[upbeat music playing on radio]
- Mom?
- Mm-hmm?
- Is this the last of the bacon?
- Yes, I think so.
It's one of yours.
- Are you curious?
- Yeah.
I'm not telling ya!
That's mean.
Did you sleep alright?
- Yeah.
- So you slept in spite of your Dad?
He was snoring all night.
I thought I was going insane.
Wanna sit down?
Okay.
I was thinking the two of us could go out.
We could go in the woods and
- Well
- gather pine cones. A girls trip.
I was hoping I'd be able
to stay home again, to read my book.
Yeah. We can do that instead.
We can stay home and read.
We can light the fire, and drink hot tea,
and have a blanket day. We'll do that.
Well, if it's okay, then I wanted
I thought I might read alone.
Mm-hmm.
Of course, honey.
[vehicle approaching]
Oh.
[suspenseful music playing]
[knocking on door]
[Charlotte] Hi. Nice to see you.
Would you like to come in?
[Karen] I just wanted to see
if you'd like to come by for coffee.
Coffee? Today?
Yes, it'd love to have
the whole family over.
And I know that Liv
will find it lovely too.
[Charlotte] This is Josefine.
Hi.
Hi.
[Charlotte] Well, wonderful.
All of us will come. In half an hour?
[Karen] Yes. Whatever suits you.
We'll do that.
See you in a bit.
- Great.
- Bye-bye.
But, Mom
- Is that something you'd like, honey?
- Yeah.
- Mom!
- Liv'll be there?
Yes, Liv will be there.
- Mads?
- Mom!
- [Mads] Five more minutes, please.
- Five minutes!
- We've been invited over for coffee.
- Mom!
- Mom!
- What?
- I wanna stay home today.
- It's just a couple of hours, Jose.
It's two hours of your life.
You'll live, honey.
- [Jose] Two hours? Seriously?
- Yes, seriously.
You can read when we get back.
Right now, we're doing this together.
[ominous music playing]
[Mads]
Are there bears around here, or what?
- [Charlotte] Just keep driving.
- Did you see those traps?
Yes, I saw them.
- [car door opening]
- [footsteps approaching]
[Mads] This it?
[Charlotte] Yes.
They run their shop here.
Remember what we agreed.
[Liv] Mm-hmm.
They'll soon be gone.
[door opening]
[Karen] Great. You made it.
- Yeah. Hi.
- Yes
- [Mads] Hi.
- Thanks for inviting us.
Of course.
[Mads] This looks delicious.
Thank you again for having us.
It's sweet of you.
Visitors are rare
here on the island, so enjoy.
- [Mads] Thanks.
- Thanks.
- [Kasper] Thanks.
- That's one of the reasons we came here.
So we can have time as a family.
[Karen] Mm-hmm.
And so,
what have you heard about Årmandsø Island?
Well, not a lot.
Mads' colleague told us
the place was for rent.
And there were pictures,
and it looked beautiful.
And so we thought it would be a nice place
for us to celebrate Christmas.
You drift apart when
when you work a lot.
We just want to be together.
Christmas has a tendency to go haywire,
so we needed this.
What are you doing for Christmas?
They might not do the holiday.
That's okay too.
A lot of people don't.
Well, we absolutely do.
But, uh, Christmas is a lot of things.
And for us, we celebrate with
Well, introspection and reflections.
Gratitude.
There's a lesson, Kasper. Hear that? Hmm?
Christmas is for your family
and a time for reflection.
Serenity. Not how many gifts
you can coax out of your parents.
The cake is delicious. What's in it?
[Karen] Just apples, butter, flour, sugar.
- All of them local products.
- [ominous music builds]
[faintly] From the island.
[Mads' response fades]
[ominous music building]
[disembodied grumbling]
[Karen chatters indistinctly]
I have to do much more
than the typical 40-hour work week.
Why are the woods fenced off?
It's there because Mm
We used to live in harmony with nature
until some people who moved here were
They believed it was better
to profit from nature.
So they opened a saw mill in the forest.
Cut it down tree be tree.
Some of us tried to fight it,
but they made it
They made good money.
People were happy about it.
So my daughter, that's Liv's mom,
and also her dad, they worked there.
Most of the islanders went
to work there and then
Well, then it closed.
There was an accident.
Um
A terrible accident.
Some chemicals leaked out
into the ground from the saw mill,
so that's that's why we fenced it up.
So no one goes in.
You have to stay away.
Far away.
[Mads] Well, that's just typical.
As soon as we smell money,
we don't give a shit about nature.
- It's too bad.
- Can I use the restroom?
First door on the left.
[Mads] Mm.
- [Karen] More cake?
- Yes, please.
[ominous music intensifies]
[radio buzzes]
[on radio] Karen, it's Møller.
I'm at the house.
- Over.
- [radio beeps]
[radio buzzes]
[Møller on radio]
Karen, are you there? Over.
[Karen] Karen for Møller.
I can't find it. I've searched
the entire barn. It isn't there.
Keep looking until you find it.
And hurry up. I don't know
how long I can keep them.
- [radio beeps]
- Roger.
[suspenseful music playing]
[indistinct chatter]
[door slams]
[cows mooing]
Sir, how do I get to Skovvangen?
- Go to the ocean and follow the coast.
- [Jose] Thank you.
[suspenseful music intensifies]
[music builds to a climax]
That's why this
is exciting for us. Nature.
It's the opposite
of what we're used to, you know?
Why don't you go and look for her?
Yeah.
[clears throat]
I'll help you.
We should go back soon.
Thank you so much. The cake was delicious.
- [Kasper] Jose
- Super tasty.
Jose.
Just typical.
We have to talk.
[door creaks]
You have to leave here now.
[chuckles] Um, okay. But you invited us.
I don't mean here. The island.
As soon as you can. You shouldn't be here.
Liv, what's going on?
We know you have one at home.
A youngling.
Møller's on his way to get it right now.
[sighs]
So what is that thing?
A woodland elf.
[Kasper chuckles]
I'm not lying. Elves are real.
They're not like in fairy tales.
- Yeah, right. Nice joke. [chuckles]
- They've always been here.
In hiding.
Isolated. That's why we built the fence.
- We only go there to feed them.
- Liv. [sighs]
They killed a man.
He went in and he didn't come back.
They're little though.
They don't continue to be that small.
[ominous music playing]
Jose.
[panting]
[door rumbles]
[panting] Kee-Ko?
Are you here?
They're looking for you.
Where are you?
[Kee-ko cooing]
[sighs]
[Kee-ko screeching]
What's wrong?
[Kee-ko screeching]
Don't be scared.
It's just me.
[Kee-ko screeching]
[Jose grunts]
[ominous music playing]
What are you doing? Stop!
No! Don't!
Don't hurt it!
- [Kee-ko screeching]
- Møller, stop!
It hasn't bothered you!
[Kee-ko screeching]
Stop!
What are you doing?
- Move. Move!
- Let it go!
Now! Stop! Leave it alone!
[ominous music intensifies]
[Jose grunts]
You don't know what you've done.
[Kee-ko screeching]
[sobbing] Hey. Wait.
[breathing heavily]
You're welcome to stay and wait for her.
- She probably ran home, but thanks.
- [engine turns over]
[Karen] You're always welcome.
[ominous music playing]
[Kee-ko screeching]
[panting]
[gate creaking]
I brought your child!
It was outsiders!
It wasn't me!
It's back now,
and you took Anders, so this stops now!
Okay?
[breathing heavily]
[gate creaks]
[gate slams]
[lock clicking]
[engine turns over]
[vehicle retreating]
[ominous music building]
[music builds to climax]
[end theme music playing]
