[wind blows]
[chanting in Arabic]
[shoveling]
[chanting, shoveling continue]
[chanting ends]
[shoveling, earth falling]
[seagulls cry]
Yoohoo! I'm here.
Ooh, you've really outdone yourself.
The ambiance is perfect.
The one thing missing is you, Göksel!
Welcome, Şenay.
[dramatic music plays]
I hope you're hungry. Sit down.
Mr. Kenan, what a
What a surprise to find you here.
Oh, drop the mister, please.
There's no need to be so formal.
Go on, sit.
[Yasin] I know that guy.
He's, uh Wait, it'll come to me.
He's, uh A writer, that's right.
[Yasin] A writer. His name's, uh
What is it?
[music continues on TV]
He's done a bunch of stuff.
[Yasin] So, he's an actor, too.
Ah, what's his name?
It's in the back of my brain.
Do you know, Meryem?
Huh?
What is it?
Hm.
Levent.
[Yasin] Levent? Levent.
That's it, Levent Levent what?
Why were you looking at
the Hodja's daughter?
Huh?
You were looking at her.
I was what?
You know that girl?
What girl?
What, Meryem?
Why are you looking at me like that?
- I'll go make
- So she's the Hodja's daughter.
Go on. What are you waiting for?
Go make the tea.
And make me something to eat, too.
I'm starving over here.
Go on, Meryem.
Where's Ruhiye?
She's in bed.
What a surprise.
She said she had a headache.
Where are the kids?
Pack a bag with their clothes, and
Whatever.
- Pack a bag?
- Yeah.
For, like two or three days.
One for me, too.
Where are you going?
The village.
What?
Ruhiye's village. Don't you remember?
How she kept wanting to go there.
Now, brother?
Of course not now. That's not what I said.
What did you say?
We'll leave tomorrow,
after morning prayers.
That way, if all goes well,
maybe we'll get there before dark.
Why now, all of a sudden?
What do you mean, all of a sudden?
How long has she been wanting to go?
- I know, but
- Well, okay, then. So, we are.
Huh?
You're really saying that we're going?
Yeah, I am.
To her village?
Yeah, that's right.
Now, all of a sudden.
No, not now. What's wrong with you?
I told you, we're going in the morning.
- It's just that
- [Yasin] What?
I thought you were going to
make some tea, Meryem. What's wrong?
[Yasin] Why are you sitting there
like a deer in the headlights?
Good God.
So, she's the Hodja's daughter.
[Hodja sighs]
You should try and
get some sleep, daughter.
It's time for bed.
Go on, now.
[Hodja] My beautiful girl.
Sell the van, Papa.
Oh
It was God's will, Hayrunnisa.
Not the van.
[Hodja] The doctor said
it was hypothermia.
You know your mother's heart
wasn't the best.
[Hayrunnisa whimpers]
[sighs] Oh, my daughter.
[Hodja whispers prayers in Arabic]
[sighs]
[Hayrunnisa sobs]
Rest assured that Allah has saved
the best spot in heaven for your mother.
[Hayrunnisa] It's my fault. [sobs]
Huh?
[Hayrunnisa sobs]
Why on Earth would you
say that, Hayrunnisa?
[Hayrunnisa] Because it was my fault.
[sniffs]
You wouldn't have gone, Papa.
How's that?
- When I was attacked by the dog.
- [Hodja] Hm?
You said, "Maybe we should stay." But I
made you leave. [sobs]
I made you take the trip. [sobs]
[tuts, sighs]
Oh, my sweet, dearest Hayrunnisa,
you are the light of my eyes.
[Hodja] How can you
even think such a thing?
Because it's true. [sobs]
[Hodja sighs]
[dogs bark]
OUR PEOPLE ARE NOT HAPPY
[Orhan] "Take the baby boomers,
those born between 1945 and 1966.
For instance,
they would patch their old trousers,
they would mend their torn shirts
and their overcoats.
They would even
resole their worn-out loafers,
and repair an old and broken radio,
rather than simply replace it.
This wasn't just about frugality.
It was an attempt to send a message
to all of the future generations,
in the hopes that
they would profit from it. [coughs]
[Orhan] But Generations X and Y,
those born between 1965 and 2000,
dismiss these efforts as having arisen
from poverty, stinginess, or cluelessness,
and so the message
was completely lost on them.
Then there came along Generation Z,
those bold, idealistic seekers of truth,
finding the effort difficult,
they quickly got bored and gave up.
It turns out they're very fragile,
this latest generation,
and that when it comes down to it,
they're more interested
in getting than in giving.
Having lost the knowledge
of how to repair things,
they're in for hard times, I fear.
May this serve to remind them
of the generation that came before,
the ones born between 1944 and 1965,
and of their legacy."
What are you reading?
Sadi sent it to me.
He sent it on Facebook.
Someone sent it to him.
[Feray sighs] He never looks up
from his computer either.
It's from his phone, actually.
I really thought
it summed things up quite well.
[sighs]
[Orhan] "Vegetables and
bone degeneration." [clears throat]
"An important source of minerals,
such as iron, broccoli"
Orhan! That's enough! No more reading.
[almost speaks]
Am I permitted to read it to myself?
No, you are not permitted.
Go talk to your daughter for two minutes.
She's on the phone.
[Feray] She's been off for hours.
- [Orhan] Did she say anything to you?
- Hm?
[Orhan] About the beach house?
She doesn't want you to sell it.
Come on. I'm not just selling it
for my own kicks, Feray.
She said something about her
her childhood memories, I don't know.
She never went.
Don't know.
We're certainly not watching this.
- [talking on TV]
- [Orhan] Turn it to Özdil's show.
You watch him too much already.
[talking on TV]
[dramatic music on TV]
[laughter on TV]
[theme tune on TV]
[dramatic music on TV]
[dramatic music on TV continues]
You know, I like this girl.
- [talks nonsense]
- [laughter]
[mellow music plays]
That's the way it is now.
Every show has to have
a woman with her head covered.
[mellow music on TV continues]
- [tense music plays on TV]
- [thunder rumbles]
Did you pack the bags?
Yes, and I made some buns for the road.
You could have one now, if you want one.
No, it's way too late.
I'm tired the next day,
if I eat late at night.
So, we're going?
- Huh?
- [Meryem] To the village.
Yeah. Why are you even asking?
- Just to be sure.
- [Yasin] What are you trying to say?
Nothing, I was just
Yeah? You must have meant
something, Meryem.
[music on TV stops]
So, what is it? Go on!
I want to know what you meant
by what just came out of your mouth.
- You just said something, right?
- Why are you so upset?
Am I right or wrong?
Didn't you just say something?
- Yes, but
- Am I right?
- Yes.
- So what did it mean?
Nothing. I was just asking.
I was just surprised
because it all came up so suddenly.
Suddenly? What are you saying?
You suddenly wanting to
go to her village, I'm saying.
I just don't get it. Besides, it's winter.
I know we'll just end up stuck in
that tiny room with her moody relatives.
[thunder rumbles]
What sort of person are you turning into?
Sometimes I wonder how
we could have come from the same mother.
[Yasin] Don't you care at all?
Can't you see the state I'm in?
- What state are you in?
- Don't talk back!
Don't you dare talk back to me.
What if she goes and kills herself?
What am I supposed to tell my kids?
What am I gonna tell them? Meryem?
"Your mother,
she just went on a little trip.
She's gone away
and left us all on our own."
How do I tell the kids
their mother killed herself?
- God forbid.
- [Yasin] I'm trying.
She wants to go to her village, so I say,
let's go, if that’s what it takes.
And instead of supporting me,
you give me nothing.
Except to complain.
About her family and the weather.
Okay, forget about it.
God, I'm sorry I even opened my mouth.
[Yasin] But you did, Meryem. You did.
It's always like that with you.
You talk and talk.
You say a lot of stupid things, and then
wish that you hadn't. So then, don't!
[rain patters]
I'm going to bed.
May God make it easy.
Good night, Meryem. Good night to you too.
[Yasin] Go to bed.
Don't stay up all night.
[Meryem] You think I'm an idiot?
I saw you look at the Hodja's daughter.
[soft music plays]
[door opens]
[thunder crashes]
[dog barks outside]
Where were you?
In the bathroom.
First thing in the morning
We're gonna go to the village.
Ruhiye?
- You asleep already?
- No.
What?
I'm not asleep.
So, did you hear what I said?
We'll leave after morning prayers.
[Ruhiye, crying] Praise God.
[thunder rumbles]
- Ruhiye, look at me.
- [sobs]
Look at me, Ruhiye.
[sniffs]
Why are you crying, now?
We're going to your village!
Why now, Yasin?
Haven't you been saying
how much you want to go?
Huh?
So, you're happy?
- [Yasin] Right?
- [sniffles]
Those are happy tears, aren't they?
[breathes shakily]
[chuckles] You cry at everything.
Good or bad.
You really are a crazy girl, aren't you?
Nuts! [laughs] You really are.
[Yasin] Okay, that's enough crying.
Let's get some sleep.
Hey, where have you gone? Ruhiye?
[Yasin] Hm?
[sighs, sniffles]
Where'd you go, Ruhiye?
You went somewhere.
[Yasin] I wish I could
look inside your head.
Just pull up a chair, sit down,
and watch what's going on inside of there.
[thunder rumbles, rain patters]
Wish I could.
[Yasin] Who knows
where you've gone this time.
[breathes shakily]
Ah, Ruhiye.
Come on, get some sleep.
We're got an early start in the morning.
An early start.
[sniffles]
[breathes shakily]
I'm here, Yasin.
Where are you?
[thunder rumbles]
Huh?
[Yasin] Come on, go to sleep.
- Turn off the light.
- [sniffs]
[emotional music plays]
[emotional music continues]
[tapping]
[Sema] This is
really beautiful, Hayrunnisa.
[Hacer] Mm-hm.
Of course it is. It's embroidered.
No one does it like that anymore.
You would have to go to Tahtakale.
They have them in Coco, too.
[emotional music continues]
You're always listening to
this foreign stuff.
[knocking on door]
[door opens]
Hayrunnisa, the guests are leaving.
You should come say goodbye to them.
- [emotional music continues]
- [guest 1] I'm so sorry.
[guest 2] I'm so sorry.
[guest 2] Okay, we'll see you soon.
[guest 3] So sorry
[guest 4] Okay.
- [music fades]
- [ball bounces]
[ball bounces away]
[birds tweet]
Your mother.
She's here.
No one can take her from you.
Not if you don't let them. You understand?
If you want to talk to her,
go on and talk.
And when you feel like crying,
hold your hand right here
and cry.
She'll hear you.
She'll cry with you,
she'll laugh with you
You'll see.
Does that make sense?
Let her talk to you.
[Burcu sighs]
Thank you.
Are you kidding?
I've been there.
You'll find you won't want to go to sleep,
'cause the dreams are the worst.
I used to wake up crying every morning.
But never forget, I meant what I said.
Your mother's in here, always.
If you let her.
She'll be the breeze
coming through your window.
The bird singing on the windowsill.
I don't know
You get what I mean.
Look, I know
I know it's easy to say, but
We're here for you. We really are.
By the way
You never call me.
I mean, it's getting to be like we'd never
talk again if I didn't reach out to you.
No, it's nothing like that.
You got scared at the club. I get it.
Huh?
The other night?
The bouncer that caught us in the stall?
Threw us out. That asshole. Piece of shit.
We were better off in Konya.
I thought this was
supposed to be the big city.
It's worse than the fucking village.
[gasps]
That's right.
From when he grabbed me.
Don't worry, I've got it covered.
How's that?
I'm going to ruin his life.
Rip out his fucking mustache.
Not really?
Oh, and then some.
When I'm through
he'll wish that he was never born.
Plus, that sister of his
I'm gonna bring his house down
on top of his whole family.
He's got no idea what's coming.
I'll pull out a tooth
for every single bruise he gave us.
I mean, honestly.
You know Game of Thrones?
How many seasons did they do?
- Eight, right?
- Yeah.
Well then, season nine
starts now.
- Can you give me a bun, now, Meryem?
- They're up by you, Ruhiye.
[Ruhiye] Mm.
This is nice, isn't it, Ruhiye?
Hm?
Going to the village.
Yeah, it's fine.
"It's fine?"
"It's fine."
Whoa.
So that's what I get for all my trouble.
You're dried up.
You're dead inside.
Yasin, please.
You're all dried up.
- [banging]
- [Meryem gasps]
What?
- [gasps] Yasin!
- Ruhiye! Stop.
- Oh my goodness!
- Hey, Ruhiye!
- No, no! Ruhiye, don't do that!
- For the love of God, stop it, Ruhiye!
- Before she kills us, grab hold of her!
- Don't, don't! Sister, stop!
- [Meryem] Please, stop!
- Ruhiye!
- [Esma] Mama? Mama!
- Will you just stop!
- What are you trying to do, kill us all?
- Ruhiye, you're scaring the children.
Okay, just calm down.
Calm down for a minute.
Let me stop.
- Sister! Ruhiye! Stop!
- Stop it, stop it! Ruhiye!
- Meryem, get her!
- Think of the children!
- We'll get in an accident.
- You're going to kill us!
Think of the kids, Ruhiye!
[tires squeal]
- Come on
- [horn sounds]
- Can't you pull off the highway?
- I'm trying to, keep hold of her.
- [gasping]
- Ruhiye, no!
- [Meryem] There we go.
- [all pant]
You're okay now. You're okay.
Stay in the car!
[Meryem] It's alright, kids.
Everything's alright.
[panting]
Let me out, okay?
[Meryem] Let me just
scooch past you. Okay.
[switching radio stations]
- [rhythmic music plays]
- Huh?
[Meryem] Come on, Ruhiye!
[clicking fingers] Dance with me!
Dance! Don't you wanna dance?
Ruhiye.
[Meryem] Yasin!
[Meryem] Come on! Get up.
Get up. Dance with me.
Let's liven things up a little.
[Meryem] Come on, Yasin.
Up! Up!
- What are you doing?
- Come on, get up!
What the hell are you doing, Meryem?
Is this how Papa did it?
Remember how you used to dance with him?
With the arms?
[Meryem] Come back, Yasin.
Dance with me.
- [Meryem] Yasin. Yasin!
- [gasping]
Oh, come on!
I'm turning around.
Wh What are you doing?
What happened?
- What's wrong?
- Am I a joke to you?
You're mad at me?
I am, Meryem.
[Hodja sighs]
[clock ticks]
[door opens]
[door rattles]
[Yasin breathes heavily]
[talking on TV]
[door opens]
Where's your purse?
What?
Purse, Ruhiye.
Why?
Will you just tell me
where your purse is, already?
[sighs]
Yasin? Are you smoking?
No. Why would you think that, Meryem?
But you quit.
Will you get off my back?
I'm making some broth for Esma.
She's got a temperature.
How high is it?
It's nothing serious.
She's just a little out of sorts.
It was all that driving back and forth.
Well, what are you waiting for?
If you're gonna make it, make it.
[voice breaking] No one knows
what to say around you.
Sorry, Meryem.
I see it now.
It's alright.
I wasn't saying you had to apologize.
It's enough, already.
That's it.
We're done.
I'm making tea. You want some?
We're done.
What?
I'm okay, thank you.
[emotional music plays]
- [emotional music continues]
- [Hodja snores]
Papa?
Papa.
[whispers] Papa
[sobs] Mesude
Mesude, how could you leave me?
[sobs]
- [sobbing] Mesude
- Papa
[emotional music continues]
- [music fades]
- [insects chirp]
