trapped in a world of abuse and pain.

Too bad the guy's
lying through his teeth.
Say hello to the Chain Cutters,
American mercenaries who claim
to fight child trafficking abroad.
Mostly wannabe cops, survivalist types
who now operate out of Europe.
They recruit members
with similar ideologies,
preaching good versus evil.
And the DOJ has been
building a case against them.
On what grounds?
Fraud, for starters.
They raise money through donations,
and there's a probe into
misappropriating funds
embezzlement, laundering.
All roads point back to their leader,
Sam Keaton.
Seems he's been using
the group's exploits
to line his own pockets.
In three years, they've done a 180
from the righteous
group they started as.
Keaton's scheme now undermines
legit anti-trafficking efforts.
This bloke acting alone, or
is the whole crew in on it?
Well, that is what
we're hoping to find out,
but Keaton's second-in-command,
he was just picked
up in western Romania.
Ty Selvidge, an electrician by trade.
Applied five times to Roanoke PD.
Currently detained at a
remote border police outpost,
and it sounds like the
guy's ready to flip.
Angling for a deal in
exchange for dirt on Keaton?
Even better. He has a stolen
laptop that belongs to Keaton.
So the U.S. Attorney has
already approved a transfer of custody.
Andre, you'll head to Romania
to pick up Selvidge and his laptop,
and we are standing by
if you need anything.
Easy enough.
That's it?
[suspenseful music]
We've learned there's a
kill switch on the device.
It'll need to be disabled
before your return.

We had a sat phone in the car.
Our ride's toast, along
with everything in it.
BP vehicle's out of commission too.
We're cut off.

Stable, but she needs a doctor.
I doubt we can drag
her through the woods.

Chasing him alone is a mistake.
If we lose him now,
we may never get that cop-killer again.

Claire, try the sat phone.
See if we can give them a nudge.
Andre's cell is off.
Same with Amanda's.
Nothing.
This was supposed to be a quick handoff
on border patrol's turf.
Why the radio silence?
Our Romanian POC's not answering either.
What's the closest LE branch
to the border patrol site?
- I'll make some calls.
- Let the Romanians know
that their people at
the outpost went dark.
We need to get someone with
eyes and ears out there.

I know his face was covered,
but we're tailing Sam Keaton, right?
Maybe. He's got the motive
to take out a traitor.
And if that laptop
really is his Achilles,
he'd come for it.
I had him in my sights, Andre.

[wire twangs]

Whatever this place is, it
wasn't marked on Keaton's map.
Definitely our shooter's camp.
But if it's Keaton, where did he go?
Maybe he moved on.
But even wannabe soldiers
wouldn't ditch working weapons.
Could be the weight.
Then why carry it all the
way back here just to drop it?
I don't know.
Swap it for something better?
Let's hope not.

Footprints leaving the camp.

Our shooter's not alone.
Second pair looks smaller.

drugging this kid for days.
We're now dealing with a hostage.

Amanda, his boots have a
different tread pattern.
They don't match the tracks we found.
If this isn't your campsite,
then who the hell are we chasing?
Forest Guard just got to the outpost.
It's a bloody massacre.
Selvidge was killed,
along with three border
police. One survived.
- What about Andre and Amanda?
- MIA.
Their car was found out of commission.
The surviving officer said
they are out there on foot.
Can she ID the suspects?
One shooter, but he had a mask on.
It seems pretty clear that
Selvidge was the target.
We can't just sit here, right?
A third of that country is forest.
That's a lot of ground to cover.
By the time we land, the
local cops will have mobilized.
We can do a lot more from here
than playing catch-up there.
Kyle, can you loop in
our contacts at NGA,
- get updated scans of the area?
- On it.
Scott, if Keaton found
out his number two flipped,
did somebody leak the intel to him?
What, is it a mole on the Romanian side?
I mean, how else would he know
where Selvidge was being held?
But his capture was kept under wraps.
And most of the inner circle
wound up dead at the outpost.
I doubt the leak came from Romania.
Then maybe we need a better
look into Keaton's crew.
Claire, Ernesto, pull everything
on the Chain Cutters
members, past and present.
Send it my way.

but you're strapped like it's Fallujah.

This is all gonna blow back on you.

that he might be in these woods.

know, Special Forces this,

he's never even served.

that was looking for some real action.

he pulled a knife on me.

involves a child in a cage?

Well, if it's the kid I'm thinking of,
she's an orphan.
Dora Bogdan.
She had a great story. Photogenic too.
And the plan was to, you know
to use her face to help
market the Chain Cutters.
Now, I-I may have
stretched some details
for dramatic effect, and
somewhere along the way,
Lee swallowed that pill, decided this
this Romanian girl needed a savior.
When he left us, he
he must have abducted
her from the orphanage.
How do we know that that's true,
and that you didn't give
the order to begin with?
Check his phone.
See if he's been in contact
with Lee or any of his team.

refreshed about 20 minutes ago.
Must be a cell tower where he came from.
I can see the coordinates
a couple of miles away.
Okay, if we can get back online,
that detour is worth a shot.

[suspenseful music]
These were taken within the hour
using a low-orbit satellite,
but we still can't see Andre or Amanda.
If they're on the move,
that village to the north
would be a smart play.
Chisirid, population 390-ish.
Mostly farmers and craftsmen,
but there is definitely infrastructure.
What's that to the
east? It's a lot closer.
It looks like a logging site.
That doesn't make any sense.
I thought this area was protected.
Protected from legitimate operations.
Loggers backed by OC sell that
unsanctioned wood at a premium.
They've killed forest rangers
just to keep business going.
All right, Smitty, pool
your intel with Ernesto.
Dig deeper into that logging op.
Well, say what you
want about my tactics,
but the work I do shines
a light on an epidemic,
gets people talking.
And then they cut you a check.
[laughs]
For the cause,
like the church using
tithes to do more good.

at the outpost. She got hit.
She made it. Three others didn't.
We're at some kind of timber yard.
We got Keaton and his computer.
There's evidence on it you need to see.

I'll start transferring some files over.
Shooter's gone, but we
have a name Xavier Lee.
He's taken a hostage
a six-year-old girl
named Dora Bogdan.
Smitty's on it.
Cam already pulled a
file on your suspect.
Xavier Lee, I flagged
him on our end too.
He was a former IT specialist,
and he applied for the army,
but they rejected his application.
He failed his psych eval and SSB.
Lee was diagnosed with
paranoid schizophrenia
and bipolar disorder.
I'm seeing two aggravated
assault charges since,
multiple stints in
psychiatric facilities,
foster care as a child.
I mean, this guy, he
is troubled all the way.
The Chain Cutters
recruit a certain breed,
people desperate for
a sense of belonging.
Foster care might be why Lee's invested
in saving the kid.
Local police report says
Dora Bogdan has been missing
from her hometown in
Salonta for five days.
Her parents are in tatters.
I thought you said she was an orphan.
Ugh, our cell bandwidth
is stretched thin.
The files I'm sending are
gonna take forever this way.

the Hub's firewall kicked
in, tried to block the files.

Now, that led me down a rabbit hole

wires them funds every month.
Gullwin is linked to an American LLC.
One with virtually no footprint
except they bank out of this
tiny little branch in Delaware.
Here's the thing, so
do the Chain Cutters.
You're saying Keaton might
have ties to that logging site?
I'm saying the paper trail says
that he's paying the
local gang for something.
Protection money so he can
operate on their land freely.
If Keaton's in bed with Romanian OC,
then we have to warn Andre.
Yeah.
[line trills]
[cell phone buzzing]

The outpost was hit because
you thought Keaton was there.

- The girl's still alive.
- [sighs]

Lee posted it a few days ago.
Today, I received a divine message.
And just as Abraham was
asked to sacrifice his son,
I have a new mission.

Chisirid it's not just
the closest village from here,
it's the only place
where there's a church
that Lee can get to.

the less chance this girl survives.

girl's on a clock now.
As soon as the nurse

since you're watching the laptop.
Except I don't see Sam Keaton.
He stays in FBI custody.
And I'm giving you one more chance.
Let Dora go and turn yourself in.
[gunshot]
I know you feel like you've been
let down by people your whole life,
by people just like Keaton.
But I know you understand
right from wrong!
[gunfire]
There is a right side.
[tense music]

The girl's innocent.

And if I can't have Keaton,
then there's nothing left to discuss.

[gun clicks]
[groaning]

The evidence on the laptop proves
Keaton was behind the operation.
Kidnapping children from their homes
to monetize their return?
I mean, that's enough of a trail
to tack on multiple felonies,
including ties to the
illegal logging op.
Not to mention all the Chain Cutters
ready to testify against
him, so Keaton is done.
I bet more than one country
wants a piece of him.
Yeah, that's up for the DOJ to work out.
But given the fact that
he tried to wipe out
two federal agents earlier,
I mean, there's gonna be hell to pay.
- Scott.
- Yeah.
It's for you.
Andre tells me you took
a bullet for him today.
Just a scrape.
