Felicity s01e16 Episode Script

The Fugue

This may be the most important test you will ever take.
It has been specifically designed to illuminate, if you will, those strengths and weaknesses which directly impact your professional qualifications.
Answer the questions honestly and forthrightly.
Any attempt to communicate with others will be viewed as a serious - Excuse me.
Abby? Yes, Felicity? You probably know this - I'm sure you do - but our old manager, Javier, actually did employee evaluations on all of us.
You're right.
I do know that.
But remarks like "a real cutie patootie" ve and "when he makes a moccachino, I get all tingly" were hard to quantify.
Woman: Excuse me? Are you guys open? We open at 8:00.
Oh.
Do you have a phone? I'm sorry.
The phone is for customers only.
Hanna.
- Hi.
- Hi.
You work here.
Uh excuse me? - What are you doing here? - I just wanted to use the phone.
- In New York, I mean.
- I moved here.
I'm going to the Conservatory.
Wow.
Uh so, does Noel know? No.
It's - I've just been getting settled.
It's been crazy.
How's he doing? Um, he's doing great, actually.
I'm glad.
We're doing great.
Yeah, I know.
You've wanted to meet him since, you know, forever.
So, guess who's living in New York? It's Hanna.
Yeah.
Well, I actually know a guy who lives on 19th.
Right, but a little - a little closer to town.
Yeah, right.
I know, a "Chelsea morning.
" Okay.
Well, yeah.
No, that sounds great.
We'll see you tonight.
She's coming? Okay, bye.
Okay, so, uh, the girl who I went out with for two years, who I haven't seen since Thanksgiving, has been secretly living five minutes away for the past two months? - Is she actually coming tonight? - Oh, she's coming.
Because I didn't really invite her.
I mean, I mentioned that a group of us might be going out.
I was just overcompensating.
It was a nervous reaction to prove to her that, you know, I had no problem with her being here.
But you do have a problem? Should I have a problem? Do you? Should I? Because you're acting kind of nervous.
Well, I mean, you and me and her living in the same city, is that not weird? Is it weird? No.
No, it's not weird.
It's surprising.
But it's not weird.
I'm serious.
He's gonna say mine needs a lot of work.
Did you hand yours in? Uh, I was gonna stop by his office tonight, but Oh, yeah.
That's right.
You're hanging out with your best friend, Hanna.
Look, Hanna is fine.
She's fine with me.
- I'll drop yours off with mine.
- Would you?! Yeah, no problem.
You gotta keep an eye on your man anyway.
Oh, I'd like to keep an eye on him.
I met him at - at the art studio.
I saw him yesterday.
Okay.
What's happening? He's - He's coming over here.
You better introduce me.
I'm Elena.
Remember that.
Felicity.
Eli.
Elena.
That's What's up? Hi.
You can sit down if you want.
Thanks.
So I thought maybe I'd see you back at the studio.
Oh, I've been, uh, just kind of drawing in my room.
Uh, you know, I think you left some of your sketches.
I did? I put them in my drawer, if you want to come and get them.
It just says "Eli" on it.
They're in there.
Oh, thanks.
Yeah, um, I'll stop by, then.
You should.
I will.
Okay.
Nice to meet you.
Yeah.
Damn! You better go pick up those sketches.
* Have you seen yourself today? * * Could you recognize your face? * * Can you tell me what to say? * * Mine's lost with- * That was nice.
Thanks.
Yeah.
It was pretty and sad.
You know, sad and pretty.
Am I even close? Yeah, that's kind of what I was going for.
It was nice.
So the whole time, the coach is like, "Whatever that is, I want it out of the pool now.
" - What's going on? You remember Lynn.
- Hey.
This is Wes, Callie, Martin.
Sean.
- Guys.
- Man: Yo, man, this is an awesome place! - Thank you.
- Wes.
Do you mind? Nope.
Okay.
Wow, is this a D-28? No, it's - it's not a Martin.
- Are you sure? - Pretty sure.
It doesn't say "Martin" on it.
- You're really out of tune here.
- No! - That's actually - It's my own tuning - All right.
Or was my own tuning.
You-You don't mind if these guys hang around for a little while, do you? No, I don't mind.
Hey! You guys want to try a new kind of breakfast cereal? - Yeah! - Yeah! - Yeah! Taking off? I was just working on a song.
Oh, hey, well, if you want, we can leave.
- That's fine.
- No that's okay.
I have, uh, Psych in about an hour, so I'm just gonna go.
- All right.
- Bye, you guys.
- All right.
- Man: Nasty.
What were you thinking about? Man #2: Yeah, eat that.
Hanna: So the guy tells me to get off at the stop after 59th street.
He doesn't tell me the next stop is 125th street.
Thank you very much.
Anyhow, I have no idea what train I'm on.
- You were probably on the "A.
" - I'm pretty sure it was a local.
No, the local stops at 66th after 59th.
Actually, it's 72nd, but those 8th Avenue trains are really confusing.
Anyway, when I finally found the store, turns out it had been out of business for six months.
It was like that time we drove all over Saugus looking for the - software store, remember? - The place you said you'd been to before.
No, that's not true.
- Yeah, it is.
It turns out it was a soft wear something or other, like a kids' clothing store.
- Hey, things happening over here, or what? - Hey.
Have you seen Ben? Ben is at the dartboard, uh, losing the farm.
Speaking of which, does anybody know, - the spread on the Pistons game tonight? - Excuse me.
Oh, hey, look, the loo is right over there, behind the bar.
- Thank you.
Noel: Thanks, Lynn.
- The Celtics are gonna take 'em.
* She slips away * * Just watch that distance * - * growing every day * - Hey.
- Hey.
You should come back to the table.
Yeah.
Just give me a couple of minutes, all right? - Sure.
- Okay.
* So you don't love me * * and you just can't play it * * Just have the guts, baby * * to come out and say it * * Come on, girl, why don't you set me free, yeah * * 'Cause anyone can tell you're as lost as me * What are you doing? - * There's no other place I'd rather be * - Spying blatantly spying.
Are you worried about Hanna? No.
A little bit? Barely.
You know that guy she was supposed to be dating in Chicago? Well, apparently, things didn't work out.
That's all she said.
And you know what? She knew I worked at Dean & Deluca.
I mean, please! Javier was at the Thanksgiving party.
Do you really think it was a coincidence that we just ran into each other? - Why would she pretend? - Cynically? I think to scope things out.
I mean, to make it look like she didn't - Sorry, I'm being really judgmental, aren't I? No, no, no, you're just - you're acting like Like what? Like a girlfriend.
Is that what this is? So if I don't get some practicing in tonight, I'm dead! No one will care if I leave, right? No, I don't think so.
Um - 'll walk you out.
- Yeah? Yeah.
So, I've got this nightmare exercise.
I'm supposed to be writing the fugue.
The fugue.
I'm not sure how to respond to that, not knowing exactly what a fugue is.
It's where two themes are repeated.
You keep bringing in contrapuntal voices.
Well, uh, you know, anything with contrapuntal is hard.
I was wondering if you could listen to what I've got so far.
Maybe help me out Like you used to.
Like I used to, huh? Sure.
Yeah.
Thanks.
You're welcome.
Thanks.
So McGrath didn't say anything.
Mmm.
When? In class.
About what? My proposal.
And the one time he did look at me, there was a definite vibe.
It was like, "I read it and I hated it.
" Abby: Felicity, can I have a word with you? Okay.
Watch how she talks to me.
She doesn't look at me.
- Okay, I'm watching.
- Okay, watch.
I am.
Yeah? Who's that guy you're talking to? That's my boyfriend.
Okay, well, then, let's have a talk away from this area.
I'd really appreciate it if we could, uh, avoid, whenever possible, extended social moments, okay? It's just something we all need to be conscious of.
Do you understand that word? Which word, "conscious"? It means "aware.
" Aware.
No, l-I understand.
Okay.
Good.
Can you believe her? Did you just see how rude she was? Hanna kissed me.
Uh, yesterday, when I got her a cab, she, uh she gave me this.
It's a piece she's working on.
She said she needed my help.
And then she grabbed my head and she kissed me.
So why didn't you, uh, tell me last night? Because it didn't, uh, didn't mean anything.
You know, I mean, I didn't kiss her back.
I don't know.
I guess I didn't tell you because, uh it meant nothing.
Uh maybe there's another reason you're telling me.
Maybe you're telling me because, uh you're conflicted, and you think that by telling me, it'll squash those feelings and just kind of put it out there.
No, that's not it.
So how long was the kiss? Well, it was, uh it was like this, um kind of Like that.
That's kind of a long kiss.
Well, it was - it was shorter than that.
Look, I'm not gonna see her again.
You know, she's probably just, you know, lonely, in New York.
But, uh, you know, after that kiss, I mean, what am, I what am I supposed to do? What do you want to do? Uh well, I'm gonna send this tape back to her is what I want to do, and I'm not gonna see her again.
- What are you talking about?! - Nothing.
It's fine! Well, obviously, it's not fine, especially when you say, "It's fine.
" Your swim team group, your new friends - I don't think that they like me.
You know what? You're nuts.
Okay? 'Cause they totally like you.
- I don't think they like her.
- See? Can you stay out of this, please? When Lynn mentioned that there was an open-mike night, and I said that it might be something that I would like to do, he just ignored me.
Well, he probably didn't know you were serious.
It's not that big a deal, dude.
Why are you defending him? I thought you thought he was a jerk.
- Well, it turns out he's not a jerk.
- And I think - you're overreacting a little bit here.
- She isn't.
What is it? What's your problem? This is none of your business.
You know what my problem is? My problem is that of the three of us here, only one of us owns this place.
And presently, none of us is paying rent.
Yeah, I said I'd get you a check this week.
I'll get it this week.
You were acting different last night, too, because you never mentioned anything about the open-mike night, either.
I didn't? No.
So you had a horrible time last night? No, it was just that I was the girlfriend.
It wasn't you and me.
It was you and them and the girlfriend.
I'm just not used to being the girlfriend with you, which is fine once in a while-- - Yeah, but not all the time, Ben.
- Sean, I got it.
I am here if you need me.
Listen, I think your performing is a great idea, all right? Obviously, you should do it.
I really think so.
Okay.
Well, it's tomorrow night.
And I just would like you to be there just to be there.
Tomorrow night.
I can't wait.
I'll be there.
- Okay.
- Okay.
- Bye.
- Bye.
- Hi.
- Hey.
Is this-Is this a bad time? No.
Come in.
Can I get you anything? We have, uh, mango-orange juice, sparkling water, and cheese.
Would you like a glass of cheese? Um I, uh I did some thinking.
You know, some - some active, sitting there, real real thinking and I can't help you.
Oh.
God, I'm s- I'm so embarrassed.
That kiss turned everything all serious, didn't it? What was that exactly? A mistake clearly.
It was also probably the most natural thing I've done in months.
Isn't that funny? I shouldn't have done it but - but it was you and me, you know? And New York at night and- and we'd always talked about living here together, and - and after years of just kissing you thousands of times, and I mean, after not seeing you for months I'm so much more together than this.
I haven't cried once since I got here.
I- I flipped a coin.
That's how I decided to come here.
Heads was New York.
After Thanksgiving, I went back to Chicago, and I started dating this guy who turned out not to be so fantastic.
And I suddenly didn't know what the hell I was doing.
And I had an acceptance letter to the New York Conservatory, which was like a dream except you were here.
Anyway I got heads so here I am.
But we we can't just act like things are the same as they were.
I know, Noel.
You don't have to lecture me.
I got it.
This whole time, I thought you were in Chicago with that guy, you know, whoever that guy is.
And instead, I was here the whole time missing you.
You came.
Hi.
Yeah, I I just wanted to pick up those sketches.
They're in here.
So h-how's that painting coming? The one you were doing of the old man? My grandfather.
Yeah, i-it's finished.
You wanna see it? Sure.
It's funny.
He's an old man, but there's something unbreakable about him.
Yeah, that's what he was like.
He was a longshoreman.
He was a pretty rugged guy.
Unbreakable.
You know, you're really smart about this stuff.
No, I mean, it's obviously a really good painting, so No, I mean your work.
So, you looked at my sketches? Is that okay? Sure.
That's fine.
I really liked them.
I'd love to talk to you about it sometime.
Yeah sometime.
But probably not right now.
Whenever.
I'm kind of busy right now.
I've got a lot of - you know You should keep at this, though.
Thanks.
I'll - I'll see you around.
Hey! So, Julie's gonna play that open-mike thing.
What are you doing? Uh, nothing.
It's just um Hanna's tape.
I thought you were gonna give that back.
Well, l-I went to see her.
I mean, you know, to give her give her back the tape, but uh, you know.
Yeah.
I mean, nothing happened, you know.
We just talked.
First of all, I mean, I wouldn't ever assume that anything happened.
And, secondly, don't underestimate talking.
Those are pictures of her? Felicity, uh I'm just thinking about things, you know.
I'm - I'm a little confused.
Confused about what? And why are you using my name when you talk to me? You never do that.
Uh please.
Don't make me feel guilty about going to see Hanna.
Okay? I'm just trying to figure this out.
I'm sorry.
I'm I mean, I swear to God, I don't want to make you feel guilty about - But now I just apologized for you going to see your ex-girlfriend, who just kissed you, so um uh so you - you still love Hanna? I mean, is that what you're trying to figure out? Of course I still love Hanna.
I mean, we went out for a long time.
No, I don't mean have feelings for her or care about her.
What I mean is um do you still love Hanna? No.
So I'll see you tonight.
Yeah.
You all right? Yeah.
You have practice, so go.
Don't worry about it.
What's going on? It's Hanna.
Um Noel's confused, so Yeah, well, he's a guy.
I mean, guys are confused.
That's it.
Things are gonna work out, I'm - I'm sure of it.
Why are you so sure of it? Because, I mean, think about it.
Noel would never choose to be with somebody else when he could be with you.
Thank you.
Okay.
Our next guest, actually, need not be introduced, but I'm gonna do it anyway.
Uh, ladies and gentlemen, Mr.
Bernie Clavin, the howling bard of Cornelia Street.
All right, let's do this.
* City, there's a chant that holds me * * A cry that molds me * * Your ragged throat * * Your furnace eyes * * Your pale-blue jailhouse arms * * City, your street limbs that press and prove me * * stretch and fold a winding sheet * * for my jazz-drive media brain * * City of love, transport me * * City of terror * - Hey.
You, uh, you ready to lay some, uh, Lilith Fair lullabies on the assembled multitude? Some McLachlan melody, maybe a little DiFranco - Lynn - * your street limbs * - What's up? Could you just lay off, please? - * The city of my father's mother, me * - Sure thing.
Have you seen Ben? - * The city that exists, city that persists * - No.
Okay.
I'm just really nervous and completely out of tune.
Want to give me a shot? Okay.
* Pass Moloch and Murdock * * Trump and Humpty Dump * * Mayor Rudy and Judge Judy * * City of terror, awaken * There.
- * City of my father's mother, me * - You were - you were really close.
* City that exists, city that persists, that swallows us down * Thank you.
I can't play for crap, but I got - I got perfect pitch.
Hey, that's, like, the fourth thing I do better than anyone else.
- * Is it too much * - No fear, okay? * to ask * - * to love * - I mean, look at this guy.
* Y2K? * * Why not 2K? * * Is it too much to ask * * to love * * Apox on both your houses * * A plague is rising * - What's up? - Not much.
Um do you feel like ice cream? Let's go get some ice cream.
It's freezing out.
Um what about some hot chocolate, something sweet? Well, we're gonna go see Julie tonight, right? Yeah.
Well, then, let's go there.
Okay, well, I just have to change.
Are you okay? Yeah.
It doesn't matter.
Can I talk to you for a minute? Okay, I don't I don't want to assume anything, so I'm just gonna come right out and ask you what's going on.
Hanna came to see me.
She needs some help.
So you're gonna go help her? Fine.
Go.
Oh, God.
I don't know what else to do.
She's desperate.
You know, if you're gonna start defending her or your decision, I might throw up.
This isn't about her music or about helping her through writer's block.
This is about you - you and her.
If you don't want me to go, just tell me and I won't! Don't turn this on me.
I'm not gonna tell you what to do.
You know, you're acting like it's so easy.
God, you don't just stop feeling things for someone because you start feeling them for someone else.
Well, obviously, it was a really deep relationship.
Yes, it was.
Deeper than I could ever possibly understand since you and I never really slept together.
- That has nothing to do with it.
- Thank God I never did sleep with you and give that much of myself to someone who's so uncertain about me.
Okay.
I thought it was over between us and maybe it is but I don't know.
And that's the honest truth.
Are you - I mean, you're not Are you breaking up with me? I know that I can't ask you to wait for me while while I'm with Hanna.
Wait for me to make up my mind.
You've already made up your mind.
If I wouldn't have walked in here and found you, you'd be gone already.
Felicity Can you please just leave my room? Oh, my God.
I'm sorry.
Ladies and gentlemen, our next performer is making her Epstein Bar debut.
She's very talented, and I know she has exquisite taste because she took an instant dislike to me.
Give it up for Julie Emrick.
Hi.
* Have you seen yourself today? * * Could you recognize your face? * * Can you tell me what to say? * * Mine's lost without a trace * * Mama, can you help me, please? * * My hero just stabbed me * * with a knife that I did lend * * Oh, mama, who's my friend? * * Tell me, tell me, where do you go * * when all the diamonds have run dry? * * Tell me, tell me, how do you feel * * after bittersweet goodbyes? * * I had almost found my faith * * I was almost me * * But my pride couldn't swallow what I ate * * Boy, I hope you're happy * * Tell me, tell me, where do you go * * when all the diamonds have run dry? * * Tell me, tell me, how do you feel * * after bittersweet goodbyes? * Oh.
Hey.
Sorry.
Is this a bad time? Um no.
I - I was just, uh no.
I'll go.
No, wait.
Uh, what did you want? I mean, let me start over.
Hi.
I- I just had a stupid thought.
I, um I made some sketches.
They're kind of cool.
I thought maybe you'd like to see them.
They're at the studio.
I feel like I interrupted you.
No.
Oh.
Good.
And l-I 'd love to see the sketches.
Let me, uh just get my coat.
Okay, first, a preamble.
These are just rough sketches.
You don't have to apologize.
- Hi, guys.
- Hey.
Well, l-I sort of do.
I've only ever seen you a few times, so these are just from memory.
Wait.
So these sketches are of me? Yeah.
I usually have at least a photograph, you know, for reference.
Wow.
This is so strange looking at pictures of yourself.
- Is that a "thumbs down"? - No.
I I've never really had anyone draw me before, so I mean, they're really good.
You know, you're here.
It's nice and quiet.
Would you sit for me and let me draw you for real? I- I think I'd be way too self-conscious.
What are you talking about? There's only one other person to be embarrassed in front of, besides me.
I don't know.
It's like a brick wall.
I-I get to the coda, and there's no inspiration left.
No.
It's likeit's like "Baby Teeth.
" You know? That piece you wrote last year? It sounds derivative? - No.
I mean, you had the same problem.
- I don't remember.
Yeah.
Remember, you wanted something different, like a tempo change or a key change, but, of course, um I saved the day with a brilliant symphonic idea.
Which was what? Um, well, my humble layman's advice was to go back to what you already had.
Is that what you think I should do here? Go back to the intro? That might be nice.
What? I- This is just really silly.
No, it isn't.
You've painted people before, haven't you? Uh, a couple times in a summer-school art class, l-I never knew how a model could be a model without being self-conscious.
There was one woman, an old woman, and she kept so still.
It was remarkable.
I- I mean, it was like she was dead, and - and I was supposed to be drawing her, but she wasn't blinking.
And so I just kept watching her, hoping to see her clothes move or something to show that she was breathing.
Woman: See ya! You got the keys? I- I didn't bring 'em.
All right, I'll lock up.
Just make sure you close the door behind you.
Cool.
Thanks.
So what happened to the lady? Who? The dead model.
She wasn't dead.
She, um - Turns out she was just really good.
I'll be right back.
So, get comfy.
Is this lame? I mean, I don't know what you want.
Do you mind? Oh, no it's You know what? Um will you excuse me for just a minute? Yeah, sure.
Hi, it's Noel.
I'm sitting right next to my phone right now, screening this call.
Eli: Are you sure you're comfortable like that? - Yeah.
- Here.
Let me just Just That better? What? We can't - We can't do this.
What do you mean? You can You could just stay here.
We don't have to do anything.
I know.
I know, but I shouldn't - I shouldn't be here.
I'm sorry.
Are you okay? Yeah.
Do you want to stop?
