Formula 1: Drive to Survive (2019) s05e04 Episode Script

Like Father, Like Son?

1
I'm talking to Guenther.
Guenther, points on the board for Kevin.
How do you view that result?
The car looked very quick.
What I'm happy about
is the performance of the car.
Now we know the car is good,
Kevin and Mick will have good results,
both of them.
We cannot be too greedy, you know?
Last year, for two points, uh,
I mean,
I would have fucked the whole paddock,
so hopefully we can get some more.
America doesn't mind,
but I'll apologize for the language.
- Guenther, thanks and well done.
- Thank you.
- What language did I use?
- I didn't hear.
- Did you drop an F-bomb?
- No! No!
What language did I use?
What did you say you would do
to the whole paddock?
Hug them!
Dad!
I can't hold onto your vest!
Haas is back.
I always said in '22, we would be back.
Kevin Magnussen,
welcome back to Formula 1.
A brilliant fifth
on his return with the Haas team.
What a remarkable result that is.
First points for Haas since 2020.
And it all came together.
I mean, I'm so happy.
We developed a complete new car.
It is a lot of money, a big investment.
Failure for Gene is not an option.
It's just exciting,
having a car that can score points.
The combination of Kevin and Mick,
the team, the car,
we have a good chance.
He almost threw me off!
He drives like a maniac.
I'm not going to ride
the Jet Ski anymore.
We know
what we've got, what the car can do.
We need two drivers
scoring points consistently
because, if there is no performance,
it's no point to be around.
We're by the shores of the Red Sea
for the second World Championship
Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.
Welcome to Jeddah.
- It's a cool paddock, this, isn't it?
- Yeah, really nice.
Can you lean
against the wall with your arms behind?
- No.
- Come on. Even Charles did it.
It's cute. Come on.
Okay, exactly. Do the thinking face.
Got it.
Morning, boss.
You know how to charm. How are you?
All good, yeah.
I saw the car outside
and was thinking you will be here
because I am parking next to you.
Mick's working hard, you know.
He has got a very good work ethic,
very diligent, very focused.
I would say
that he comes with a good pedigree.
I think he wants to be successful,
as his father was,
and I think he can achieve that.
Are we filming already?
- Hello.
- Hi, hi.
Obviously, you know, seeing my dad
racing when I was a very young boy,
and I've obviously won F3 and F2.
Congratulations to Mick Schumacher!
And hopefully I will be able
to also be successful in Formula 1.
For me, personally,
points is a very big one of mine,
which I haven't reached yet,
but that's on my bucket list.
It's fucking fun though.
Fucking hell, man.
To get it back in
this position, it's a fucking good job.
Gene is happy.
He is now a little bit
"You have two cars.
Don't forget that, Guenther.” You know?
He needs
to just get a few more races.
He knows what to do.
Mick has the lineage
of, you know, one of the greatest drivers
this sport has ever seen,
in Michael Schumacher.
I remember watching Michael
and trying to imagine
what it's like to be there.
Super talented driver, super driven.
The most famous sports star in the world
back in the day.
Someone that I truly admire,
that I respected.
One of the most aggressive
and utterly fearless drivers in history,
both on and off the track.
Schumacher's a force to be reckoned with.
He had
an absolute killer instinct.
I do think
that he just had a natural gift.
He was my hero.
There was something extra
I haven't seen within anybody else.
But it remains to be seen
if Mick has the same character as his dad.
I think, Mick, he's a very good driver.
Everyone is gonna compare him to his dad,
and I think that's unfair
because
he has achieved so much in the sport.
My dad also, you know,
got got to Formula 1.
What would you do if your kid
says, "I wanna be a Formula 1 racer"?
Would you encourage it,
or would you say,
"Get it out of your head"?
I think this could be the first time
we have some argument,
if our two would be racing.
You want Max to be a racing driver.
Very similar age, so for sure,
they will compete with each other.
We used to go on holidays
when we were little as the two families,
and these kind of memories will always
um, yeah, stay with me,
and, you know, for both of us
to to now be in Formula 1
I think is amazing.
And also for Michael,
I think he's a very proud dad, for sure.
For Mick, the Schumacher name
is a curse and a blessing.
At some stage,
everybody needs to be his own man.
You cannot live
in the shadow of anybody else.
Not only in racing. Also in life.
So, how is the car this year?
- Uh, well. Um
- Yeah.
Let's talk about golf!
It's time for qualifying.
Time to get out on the track
and set a lap time.
Appreciate it. Thank you very much.
- I love you.
- Thank you!
I mean, seriously, I love what you do.
You have a perfect TV personality.
At least
I've got a career after this.
Once I fuck this one up.
In the Constructors' Championship, each
position's worth between 10 and 15 million
and every million
makes a difference for a small team.
Say it like this. I don't
doubt my abilities in the race car.
I really wanna prove
that I am faster than Kevin.
Here we go. Green lights,
the drivers making their way to the track.
Okay, remember,
mode push. Mode push.
Have fun.
Haas looking to carry on
where they left off this time last week.
Mick,
these laps are looking good.
Let's keep going.
Is Kevin quicker?
I'll check.
Magnussen
stringing together a really nice lap here.
Okay, good job, Kev.
Okay, we're a little behind
right now, Mick.
0.06 off Kevin, so very close there.
So we'll do one more push lap.
Copy.
You wanna always show your abilities
to the outside world.
It's not about always proving them wrong,
but it's about proving yourself right.
Last push.
You have one minute to get around.
Okay, copy.
Use all the tire now, Mick.
Use everything now.
You can push a little more.
We're losing out to Kevin this lap.
I'm losing these tires.
Shit!
Just be careful.
Fuck!
He is moving, right?
We'll come back to you.
Is he okay?
Has he said anything?
Uh, we're checking.
Mick, are you okay? Mick?
What just happened?
I don't know, Mick. Are you okay?
I'm okay.
I just don't understand it.
Uh, those Yeah.
Yeah, glad you're okay.
Sorry about that.
That wasn't meant to happen.
Fucking hell.
There is a lot of impact on a crash.
It's not only the driver.
Obviously, the most important thing,
he's safe,
but then we have to deal
with the whole team.
People think,
"Oh, you just bolt a few parts on." No.
It's very difficult
to get it all together.
Need to phone Gene now.
Fucking hell.
Hi, Gene.
Schumacher's car looked pretty bad
when they hauled it up.
Oh, it is bad.
Between half a million
to a million, I would say.
It's like, fuckin' hell,
we gave him a year to learn.
What does he do the second day?
He fuckin' destroys a car
just because the other one
is faster, you know?
Have a little talk with Schumacher.
He's getting in over his head.
Yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm.
Okay, thanks Gene.
Speak to you when you're back.
Thank you. Bye now. Bye-bye.
As a driver, um,
you always wanna go to the edge.
To figure out that 100%,
you will have to go over it.
Um, to do it at a track like Saudi,
was it the smartest thing?
Maybe not.
It is frustrating
because there was no need for it.
Nobody's hanging around here
having a good time in Formula 1.
You need to perform.
Okay, you're currently P9.
This'll get us in the points.
Schumacher in the inside
of Vettel. They make contact.
Fuck!
I dunno how big
the damage is, but I can't drive.
Mick was on the verge
of his first points in Formula 1,
but they've gone,
that's the end of his race.
Mick can do it.
He has more.
But as soon as he tries
to have more, he fucking crashes.
Schumacher down towards
the back. Not looking very promising.
Just pick up the pace now.
Okay.
No!
Oh! That is the Haas.
Fuck!
Are you okay?
Um, yeah.
That is a very costly accident.
There are real question marks over Mick.
He keeps making mistakes.
You know, some drivers
just get to Formula 1,
and it's a step too far.
When Mick crashes,
he doesn't have little ones.
He did, I think,
over half a million dollars' worth
of damage to the car.
That's a real issue for a team like Haas.
They don't have an unlimited budget.
You go back into
your thoughts. "What is it that I can do
to prevent taking those wrong decisions?"
Self-doubt is coming in
because I felt like the points
were slipping away again.
Hi, Gene.
That was disappointing, huh?
How was Mick doing?
He didn't get into go
from the beginning.
You know, it takes talent. It's
- Yeah.
- You can't develop talent.
No, you cannot buy it,
or you cannot develop it, you know?
That's the "dead man walking" area.
Fuckin' hell, if he doesn't
pull his trousers up, he will be soon.
Can you keep an eye on Maya
so that she doesn't jump up?
- She'll take a bite of the meat.
- That already almost happened.
Yes, I know. Naughty dog.
Maya, no!
- It's nice and quiet.
- Just like on the racetrack.
Yeah!
Thankfully, we have a place
that I can go back to
without all the stress
and the hurly-burly.
Guenther takes it
very personally. The stress has risen.
It's like carrying a backpack
that's getting heavier.
It's getting heavy,
you know, like a donkey.
So he's like the donkey
and, um, has got this
this bag on his shoulders.
Yes,
the last four, five races were
Unlucky.
Yeah.
He feels that responsibility
towards the team,
so you see Kevin
scoring points, doing well,
and Mick, not so well.
It does affect him.
In a way, you know, they are your sons.
It's like, you know, this family,
this racing family.
It'll be okay.
It has to be.
Yes, it has to be.
Round eight
of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship
brings the teams
to the big, bold street circuit of Baku.
You never been to Baku, no?
It's very tight.
It's tighter than the sim.
When you're actually at the track,
for the first ever year, it's like, crazy.
It's really windy, huh?
It's terrible.
Like, it's really gusty.
- I could hear it, like, in bed.
- I could hear the wind, like
Are you gonna race hard?
When are we gonna crash
into each other the first time?
Oh no, we have to avoid this.
The target is to stay alive.
Yeah, if something happens, yeah,
but it's the same with us.
So we're seven races into the season,
and Kevin's got 15 points,
but Mick, so far, has zero.
This is a team
who had so much hope for this year,
but Mick isn't delivering.
He has a handful of races
to try and convince Guenther and Gene
that he is worthy
of a seat at the top table.
Why does Mick brake so early?
- He's lost the confidence completely?
- Oh yeah.
I mean, you know,
if he crashes here again,
they'll rip him in pieces.
It's not me, then.
It's the public, you know?
It's what you call a bad spiral.
You know how much
I have to listen to Gene?
You have no idea.
Gene doesn't hate anything more
than crashing a car.
That's it.
You could get rid of him
if you wanted to.
Who helps you on a bad day?
Being able to talk
to Sebastian and call him my friend
is something very special,
but I think it's something
that, in F1, is quite rare.
And obviously my mum has gone
through so many stages with my dad,
and, you know, they definitely help me
on days where it's tough,
'cause I know
I will have unconditional support.
Are you ok to go
straight to Sky Germany for interview?
- Yeah.
- Yeah?
Guenther Steiner is with us now.
Mick, in the difficult situation he's in,
might need support.
Do you go to him, give him a hug,
and tell him it'll be okay?
Or how do you deal with him?
We are not so bad or inhumane,
like some people
like to make us out to be.
What does Mick getting a new contract
for the next season depend on?
What do you need in F1?
Points,
which you also get through confidence
and support from the team.
That was pretty nasty, that interview.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
They were not fair.
If Mick doesn't want to stay here,
he's free to leave if he doesn't like it.
Welcome to Baku.
We have 51 laps ahead of us
for the 2022 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Toto! Toto!
Big in Azerbaijan, Toto?
Yeah.
Nice and easy today. Nothing fancy.
Oh yes.
God!
Fuckin' hell.
Each year I get worse.
Max Verstappen starts third on the grid.
He has a nine-point lead
in the Championship.
You good?
Okay, Kev, so we are P16.
Copy that.
Last car's now approaching
the back of the grid.
Final car into position.
Mick Schumacher,
slowest in qualifying yesterday
so he's right at the back in 20th.
Okay, Mick,
we're gonna have to push like hell.
Overtake anyone you can.
You don't go into the weekend
hoping you won't crash,
'cause then you might crash.
A street circuit
where the walls are quite close,
that's where mistakes happen,
so going into it with very low confidence
I know
that I just need a clean weekend.
Okay, mode push. Mode push.
Okay, good job, Kev.
You're quicker than Mick behind.
Well done, mate.
Good, strong start.
Now down to one of the key corners.
Easy to put it in the wall here.
My tires don't feel too good.
Okay. We'll see if we can help.
Verstappen is making this track look easy
and already is in a comfortable lead.
Meanwhile,
Schumacher's still 20th.
Is he playing it too safe?
Just try and keep pushing.
Make up whatever time you can.
Copy.
Meanwhile,
Magnussen's got past Albon.
That's put Magnussen into 15th place now.
Still way behind
race leader Max Verstappen though.
Okay, nice work, Kev.
That's amazing.
Okay, Kev, get past Ocon.
Copy.
Come on, Kev, you can get him.
What is it?
Yeah, engine.
Okay, Kevin,
stop the car. Stop the car.
Come on!
And now
Kevin Magnussen out of this race.
Schumacher down the back,
looking inconsistent
and likely to be lapped by Max Verstappen.
So Kevin had an issue, so he's stopped.
You can push more.
Do everything you can.
This race has been
plain sailing so far for Verstappen.
Looks like he's on course
for a comfortable win.
You can just
bring this home, Max don't need to push.
I'm taking it easy.
The cars we're racing
are 17 seconds ahead.
You can push more at turn 13.
How about the brakes?
Are they okay temperature-wise?
Brakes are all okay.
Brakes, you can use them.
He's worried about overheating
the brake. Fucking hell.
He's going so fucking slow,
he doesn't need to brake.
Okay, Mick, let's push a bit more
for a couple of laps.
Overtake anyone you can.
I don't think
I can go much quicker.
Okay.
This is too slow. Fucking hell.
You can see the times.
Okay, Mick,
leader Verstappen behind.
We'll be a lap down.
Blue flags ahead, Max.
It'll be blues for Schumacher.
Verstappen going
a lap ahead now of Mick Schumacher.
A bit embarrassing for Mick and Haas.
No.
I mean
Dunno what to say, Mick.
Let's push to the end.
Max Verstappen wins
the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Was that a good race,
or was that a good race?
You tell me.
Meanwhile,
Schumacher a lap down.
Okay, that's a checkered flag,
Mick, checkered flag.
Didn't catch any luck today.
No, you were fucking slow.
We'll get back.
I, uh I don't stop believing.
Waste of fucking time.
- Are you coming?
- Yeah.
By now, you know every bend.
All the times we rode up here.
Very good.
Great.
A nice contrast to the racetrack.
Yeah.
Formula 1 is brutal.
Pressure-wise, the season overall
has been, I would say, kinda tough.
But I think, like,
it's just a matter of using that pressure
in a way that it is positive to me,
turning it into something
that will motivate me.
Brings you down to earth.
From the whole stress, hecticness.
We knew
this would be difficult, and it is.
You don't feel any pressure
with your name?
It's crazy for so many people out there
to see the son.
I am doing my best.
And I'm still convinced
that I can hopefully collect some points.
I mean, everyone
has to prove themselves, right?
I mean, my name is,
for me at least, only a blessing.
Some may say it might be a curse as well,
but I'm there because I've, uh
you know, I've raced my way to it,
and I deserve to be in Formula 1.
Dreams don't always come true,
but I can do it.
We're at Silverstone
for the 73rd World Championship
British Grand Prix.
This is the race
we look forward to more than any other.
Danny, give us a smile.
Look up and smile.
I charge for my smiles.
Thank you.
Lando, can I get a photo?
I can't, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
Grumpy.
We are in July.
Yeah, but you wouldn't know it.
It feels like April.
- We are in England.
- Yeah, that's true.
My favorite driver is Lewis.
Is Lewis as well?
Anybody like Max or Checo?
My granddad.
Your granddad likes Max and Checo.
Oh, okay.
- Morning.
- Morning, guys.
Go meet your fans, Guenther.
Guenther!
Hi, guys.
Guenther!
Afterwards.
Save me.
- You love me as well, Stuart?
- Yeah.
You sign my paycheck.
Every race that passes,
the doubts persist.
Mick, you know, is in trouble.
It's really simple, you know?
If you're in a car that can score points,
and you're not scoring points,
well, it's not the car, is it?
Have you seen Ayao?
I don't think he's up there, no.
I don't think he's up there.
I don't know
what your plans are for next year.
Just need to find somebody.
Ricciardo?
We can't afford him, Kevin.
He wants ten fucking million, minimum.
What about Hülkenberg?
I need to be smart about it.
As much as you think I'm not smart,
sometimes I'm pretty smart.
We need to start to make decisions
for the coming years,
not only the coming year,
because we are here to stay.
And if Mick wants to stay with the team,
he has to perform, like everybody else.
Here we go, then. This is
what we've all come to Silverstone for.
Good luck.
My dad is my dad,
and I am my own person.
I'm definitely proud of myself,
that I haven't stopped trying.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
And I will prove everybody wrong.
What the hell?
Red flag, Mick. Red flag.
After an incident
You know, it happens so quickly.
As a driver, you usually know
when it's too late to try and catch it.
Is everybody okay?
So Albon, Zhou,
and Russell have stopped.
But everyone's okay.
Copy.
It's never a nice feeling,
that's for sure.
But if you wouldn't be
pushing the absolute limit,
you wouldn't be in Formula 1.
This race will resume
with three cars out.
Schumacher will now start 16th
with Magnussen up to 14th.
We just line up in slot 16.
What's gonna happen second time around?
There is so much
going on in your mind.
In some ways, time slows down.
I have no fear of going back in.
I know what I can do.
Okay, good start, Mick.
Schumacher has just
got ahead of Lance Stroll.
Great job, Mick.
I am quicker than Kevin.
Try and get the guy ahead,
then we'll sort it out, okay?
I am quicker than him.
Understood.
Okay Kev, we need
to let Mick past, please.
I've got DRS.
But Mick is quicker
in the first half of the lap.
Copy.
Swap now on this straight.
Can I have a go
at trying to get, uh, Danny?
Yeah, no worries.
Let's go get Danny.
Behind you,
Schumacher has passed Magnussen.
Okay.
Let's get him!
Box, Daniel, box.
Understood.
We'll be racing Ricciardo
at the exit of pit.
Copy.
Yes, boys!
Fucking great!
I cannot believe it!
Go on, boy!
Good job, Mick. P11.
This is perfect.
Let's go, Mick. You can do it.
You're quicker than Latifi.
Let's get him here, Mick.
Let's go, boys!
Great job.
Fantastic job, Mick.
And Mick Schumacher up into the points.
Nine laps to go. P9.
Go get 'em.
Schumacher, 0.2 behind.
Copy.
He's just behind you.
Okay, Mick, let's do it.
So Schumacher does have DRS.
Shit.
Schumacher gets past Vettel. Up to eighth.
Okay, brilliant. Good job.
Verstappen's the car ahead now.
He has an issue.
Let's go get him!
Love it. Love it.
Car behind is now Schumacher.
Gap, two seconds.
We still can do it.
Verstappen in seventh.
Mick Schumacher in eighth.
Final lap, Max.
Starting last lap.
Definitely got pace on Verstappen.
Max Verstappen
under big pressure
from Mick Schumacher over seventh place.
This could be Schumacher's
first World Championship points, finally.
Are they catching?
He's behind you.
Schumacher almost makes
contact with Max Verstappen!
As long as Mick doesn't
take him out. Fucking hell.
Okay, Mick, just be careful.
Just remember, get it to the end,
this'll get us in the points.
You know you have
to try and find your limits,
and sometimes, if you don't go over them,
you will never know if you're actually
ten, 20, or one percent underneath.
Jesus!
Verstappen and Schumacher
fighting it all the way to the line.
Verstappen comes home seventh,
and Mick Schumacher
takes his first points in Formula 1.
What a British Grand Prix that was!
Ah.
- Yay!
- P8. Points, buddy, points.
You did it! P8!
Well done. Well done. Amazing!
You guys are fucking brilliant!
Excuse my swearing.
That was all right, wasn't it?
Well done.
Here we go again.
We wondered when
those points would come for Schumacher,
and at the 31st time of asking,
they have done.
Well done, Mick.
Great drive.
Mick, fantastic job. Thank you.
Fantastic drive. Thanks.
Thank you.
You gave it everything, man.
Prove 'em wrong, and believe in yourself.
That's what I say.
Micki, I'm really proud
of you! You did great, my darling.
Thank you.
Yes! So nice! Finally.
Thank you!
I was so afraid.
Congratulations.
I thought we weren't
gonna do anything with that.
Unbelievable.
Oh, Guenther, yes!
Yes, great, yes.
Thank you.
It's great to get
those questions from the media away
and focus on what's really important,
and that's the racing
and the driving in itself.
He has done really well.
You could see the battle was close.
We were really going for it.
You know, afterwards,
we talked about it, and we had a laugh.
I'm conscious about the fact
that I want more,
and it's not only those points
and now it's stopped.
I hopefully will be
more consistently in the top
and be fighting with Max
a lot more in the future.
I think we can score in every race
if we do a good job.
The car is good enough,
drivers are good enough.
Fantastic job.
We finally made it.
Mick scored points.
Will he keep the second seat?
That seat is still open, you know.
Uh, uh we are thinking
it could be anybody,
but we will take our time
to decide who is sitting in it.
So, it's not Mick's yet?
No.
You caused some real shit, didn't you?
The driver that gets us
most excited is Oscar Piastri.
Nobody saw it coming.
Alpine wanna sue Piastri,
which is fuckin' crazy.
- Not bad, huh?
- Not bad.
Fuck 'em all.
The higher you rise,
the sharper the knives.
We're certainly feeling that this year.
It's not extra pickles on a sandwich.
There's just no excuse for it.
To be accusing you
of cheating, it's shocking.
They know
exactly what they're doing.
He said, "They want your blood.
They wanna fuck you."
