Gargoyles (1994) s02e22 Episode Script

Avalon (2)

(Goliath) One thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled.
It was a time of darkness.
It was a world of fear.
It was the age of gargoyles.
Stone by day, warriors by night.
We were betrayed by the humans we had sworn to protect, frozen in stone by a magic spell for a thousand years.
Now, here in Manhattan the spell is broken, and we live again! We are defenders of the night.
We are gargoyles.
Previously on "Gargoyles": - Who are you? - Tom.
Do you swear to protect these gargoyle eggs? - I swear.
- Arise, Tom, Guardian of the Eggs.
- Where are we going, Mama? - To Oberon's mystic island of Avalon.
No magics may enter here.
(screeching) (Goliath) You spoke of the Archmage, but he died before you were born.
(Tom) Nevertheless, he lays siege to Avalon.
He's found the eggs.
Guardian! Welcome home.
- These are the eggs? - Sorry, I've always called them that.
(barks) Are you Goliath? I've heard so much about you.
This is like a dream come true.
Goliath, Elisa, this is Angela.
You've given them names? Of course.
How else could we tell each other apart? - We should get back to the castle.
- Gabriel's right.
It could be dangerous here.
Dangerous? Do you think so? Archmage! Very astute, Goliath.
(growling) Don't push your luck, Guardian.
I gave you time to prepare for death, and you wasted it looking for help.
There is no help for you under the heavens.
I'm insulted you thought otherwise.
(roars) Don't be too insulted.
(snarls) (roars) Don't crow too loudly.
After all, what have you achieved? You beat up a beach.
At dawn, you all will die.
Get used to it.
(cracking) Let's get back to the palace before the very air attacks us.
Angela, you take the point.
I know this isn't the time, but I can't help noticing that Angela looks like Demona.
Except her coloring's different.
Whose daughter is she? Daughters and sons belong to the whole clan, Elisa.
It is the gargoyle way.
- How many are wounded? - Too many.
We weren't prepared for battle.
Before tonight, there was never any need to hone our combat skills.
Tom! Oh, I prayed for your safe return.
- Princess.
- Goliath.
Oh, Tom! You found him! This is more than I'd hoped for.
And the way you've guarded our children is more than I'd dreamed of.
- I am glad to be here.
- (groans) I only wish the times were equally glad.
Laser burns! Tell us what happened.
You have to understand.
Since we arrived upon the island all those years ago, Avalon has been completely deserted, except for the sleeping king.
The Weird Sisters led the charge against us, along with two warriors armed with magical weapons.
One was a gray-bearded human.
The other was a female gargoyle we once knew as your second-in-command.
- Demona? - And I bet graybeard was Macbeth.
- You know our attackers? - Yes, but they hate each other.
We saw no sign of that.
The Weird Sisters have been using them all along.
Demona and Macbeth must still be under their control.
My old master, the Archmage, calls the dance.
I've seen the Eye of Odin on his brow.
It has clearly transformed him into a more powerful sorcerer.
He also carries the Phoenix Gate.
With that, he can traverse space or time with a thought.
If I didn't know my old magic book, the Grimorum, couldn't be brought here, - I'd swear he had that as well.
- Which explains a lot.
Macbeth and Demona must have stolen those talismans from you while they were under the Weird Sisters' power.
The Sisters must have given the talismans to the Archmage.
I only know he seemed to be in two places at once.
All of the pieces are now in place.
Goliath and his clan are doomed.
- Isn't it time for you to go? - I was just about to.
Are you certain you know what to do? I should.
I watched you do it.
Fulminus benite! Agh! (future Archmage) He starts out well enough.
But he lacks control.
Especially of that temper.
Filthy beast! Give it to me.
There is so much to teach him.
Fortunately, I've nothing but time.
- Agh! - Halt.
(whimpers) Oh, stop whimpering and show some dignity, can't you? - Who are you? - Patience.
- I can't swim! - Vessel.
- Feel better now? - Are you me? I'm who you will become.
Then you must help me recover the Grimorum from that beast Goliath.
All in good time.
The book is now part of history and must fulfill its role in the time stream.
- Then why have you brought me here? - I could put you back where I found you.
- No, no.
- All right, then, think.
What do you want? Ultimate power and revenge.
Then you will need many things.
Allies, soldiers, weapons and a base of operation.
Be silent, and watch.
My former pupil, but he's grown older.
Where are we? Not where.
When.
This is the year 995.
I understand.
We're here to take the Grimorum from him.
If you don't know, don't guess.
You are about to make some powerful allies.
Magus, do something! (screeching) Magus, you did it! I cannot go with you to Avalon.
I cannot bring the Grimorum.
This book is as good as a map to Avalon.
If Constantine or his sorcerers get a hold of it The fool has given away the source of his power.
Are we going to take the Grimorum from her? Weren't you listening? The book must remain in play.
History cannot be changed.
This is infuriating.
If you're so powerful, why can't you get me the things I need? Because unless you get them yourself, I will not have them in the future.
Pay attention and learn.
Revert.
Oberon will not be pleased.
He entrusted us to guard the gates of Avalon.
And now we are banished from that fair isle by a magician's parlor tricks.
Might I suggest an alliance? We make no pacts with sorcerers.
Not even if I can promise you revenge against these mortals? - We are listening.
- It will take some time.
What is time to an immortal? Then I will see you again in 25 years.
And soon we will all have our vengeance.
- Where are we now? - For the last time, it's when, not where.
Try to keep up.
The year is 1020.
(Archmage) These cannot be more allies.
That female gargoyle once served as my apprentice.
She betrayed me! (future Archmage) She is not an ally.
She's cannon fodder.
The first of the warriors you will need.
Trust me, we're not doing her any favors.
Aha! Don't tell me this young pup is another recruit.
Macbeth will become a great warrior if he survives to manhood.
Protect these two.
Guide their courses.
Archmage, have you forgotten? Oberon's law magically forbids us from directly interfering in human events.
The law that cannot be broken can surely be bent.
This is true.
Watch for the Grimorum, the Eye of Odin and the Phoenix Gate.
But you already have the Eye and the Gate.
(laughs) But I didn't have them until you three brought them to me.
We'll meet again at the watery door to Avalon in 975 years.
Soon the Sisters will bring you the talismans, and with them, the ultimate power of which you've always dreamed.
- What will you do with it? - I hadn't thought that far in advance.
Perhaps I'll conquer Scotland.
Only Scotland? With so much power, you can conquer the world.
Keep in mind the world has become a place of science, not sorcery, and weapons today are as potent as any magic.
You'll need a safe place from which to launch your attacks, a place humans cannot reach.
- Think.
- Avalon! Finally, you're catching on.
And, fortunately, the island is abandoned but for a few humans and gargoyles.
- Then they must die.
- Exactly.
Give him the Eye of Odin.
Aaaaargh! Now you have power, but you lack the knowledge to use it.
Give him the Grimorum Arcanorum.
Are you mad? The Eye and the Gate were forged on the island.
But the Grimorum is full of human sorcery.
By Oberon's law, no magics may enter here, save Avalon's own.
You mean we went to all that trouble to get the Grimorum and now I can't even take it in with me? What am I supposed to do? Eat it? You are learning.
(screams) (swallows) Now I understand.
We bend the law without breaking it.
The Grimorum is part of me, and goes where I go.
Then let us all go to victory.
- Give him the Phoenix Gate.
- What of the sleeping king? He really exists? I'd heard the legends, but never dreamed they were true.
All things are true.
The king is on the island, asleep in his hollow hill.
Be warned, his power is great.
Then once we've taken the island, we'll just make sure he never wakes up.
Shall we proceed? Wonderful.
Everything is going according to my plan.
As it did, as it must, as it always will.
(roars) Who are you? What do you want? Agh! (screams) Regroup! Here, to me.
This is but a demonstration of my power.
I give you this night to make your peace.
For at sunrise, I will return and destroy you all.
- Why did you call us off? - At dawn, the gargoyles will be stone.
Three puny humans will be all that stand between us and victory.
Besides, I need to give them time to bring Goliath to the island.
My vengeance would not be complete without him.
All of the pieces are now in place.
Goliath and his clan are doomed.
- Isn't it time for you to go? - I was just about to.
- Are you certain you know what to do? - I should.
I watched you do it.
Finally.
I thought he'd never leave.
After that disastrous battle, I left to find help.
And thankfully, Avalon dropped me in your laps.
But we're running out of time.
If we do not defeat the Archmage's forces before sunrise, the next battle will be over before it begins.
We have less than three hours left.
But Goliath's here now.
He can protect us.
We can deal with Macbeth and Demona.
We've done that before.
But we cannot fight the Archmage without magic.
Magus, I'll need your help.
But I have no magic.
Without the Grimorum, I am useless.
That's not true.
Don't say it and don't think it.
Perhaps we can recover the Eye of Odin and the Phoenix Gate.
Their loss would diminish the Archmage's power.
We cannot hope to take our enemies by frontal assault.
Our best chance lies in stealth.
- Then you'll need a guide.
- Two.
We know every inch of this island.
(whimpers) This must be a surgical strike.
Angela, Gabriel, you're with me.
The rest of you must protect the wounded.
Elisa, you'd better come up with a contingency plan in case this doesn't work.
Wait a minute.
Tell me about the sleeping king.
Now the fun really begins.
