Ghost Wars (2017) s01e01 Episode Script

Deaths Door

1 (murmuring) Death.
What is it? I believe that death is a doorway.
A door to a better place where we can see everything and everyone.
A place where time is lost.
And that love, it envelopes us us all.
Marty Hubbard, he didn't believe in God in the traditional sense.
Marty thought that when you died your energy within you just moves on to other energies in the universe.
That was Marty's version of God.
I think it's important that we embrace the idea that there's more to life than what you can touch and what you can see.
- (crash) - (crowd gasps) (laughing) It's ok Marty, we got the message.
(electrical short) (crowd murmuring) It's ok folks, stay calm.
It's ok, you've had a rough week, so - No, no, no.
- Man, stop! Proverbs 4:24 tells us that there is a duality to human nature and it's an easy trap to fall into.
So let us not embrace divisiveness but be united in truth.
I think that's it for today.
Let me finish with saying that it's great to see new faces, and remind you to reach out to your friends.
You tell them that we are Catholic Plus here at St.
Martin's.
Good to see you.
(bells tolling) Mary, it's always a pleasure.
Oh, you missed a good one, Val.
Yeah.
If only I had the spare time.
The election's coming up.
Maybe I should put in a bad word for you with the voters.
You don't have the numbers.
- Mrs.
Foon.
- Father.
- It's a pleasure.
- Mayor.
Speaking of which, how goes the recruitment track? So long, Mrs.
Roth.
It's uphill.
Yeah.
Roman.
(stuttering) I I just came to say goodbye.
Goodbye.
- Mayor.
- Roman.
And uh, I wanted to thank you for, uh, all the help that you've given me over these years.
Uh, you know I'm not the church type.
Well, that's what neighbours are supposed to do for one another.
I wanna give you my best for the next chapter of your life.
Roman, I mean that.
See ya.
I can't say I'm gonna be sorry to see him go.
What? He who gives to the poor shall never want.
He who shuts his eyes, well brings many sorrows.
Freak! Thanks, Doug.
So you're finally making good on that threat to leave town? I don't blame you.
You've put up with more than most could.
For longer than most would.
The fact is people are assholes.
When they encounter something different, it scares them.
I don't wanna be different.
I just I'm just Unique? Yeah, sure.
I just I wanna go to a town that's big enough that, uh, I can be anonymous and no one gives a shit, you know? Where unique is boring.
I am gonna miss you.
Thanks.
Aren't you gonna miss me? A little bit I think.
Got to go.
See ya later.
Roman, you can't leave.
Who the hell am I gonna hang out with? You're literally the only person I can talk to.
Why do you think I'm leaving? Mrs.
Foon.
Hey.
I'm actually jealous.
I'd give my right arm to leave this shit hole.
So why don't you? You know why.
You really wanna be alone? Well, I guess this is my stop then.
Maggie (small wind blows) Maggie, come on.
Mrs.
Foon.
You uh, you going to Anchorage to do some shopping? (rumbling) (gasps) (thump) (screams) (crash) Roman.
Roman! Wake up! (screaming) Roman! You have to get out of here now! Go! (grunts) Mrs.
Foon! Give me your hand! Give me your hand! (screaming) (crash) (gasping) So cell towers and landlines out of town are down.
The phones work locally but there's no way to call out.
We need to check the bridge for earthquake damage.
I know every person inside those body bags.
Can you walk me through what happened? (clears throat) Yeah, yeah.
We were we were driving and um and the bus, it lost control, it swerved, and it and it crashed and I was I was in the back.
I was You were the nearest to the rear door? - Yeah.
Back seat, and - Roman.
I wanna know what happened in there.
I just I just wanna know what happened.
- Larry, go.
- It's my mother in there! Alright, get him out of here.
- Get out of here! - You should have died - Back ogg! Back off.
- and not her! Sorry for the way people treat you, Roman.
I'm ashamed of it, actually.
I tried to save Mrs.
Foon.
I I It's okay.
Can I get you a ride home? No, I can't go home.
I I was supposed to be on that bus out of here forever.
I I let my apartment go, my bag was What about your mom's place? I know it's not ideal, but it'll do the trick until the next bus comes through.
Yeah.
Thank thank you.
(door opens, closes) (whisper) - (gasps) Ah! - Boo.
Jesus, Maggie, you scared the crap out of me.
It comes with the territory.
What the hell is going on out there? Huh? Did you did you feel that earthquake? That was no earthquake.
What? No, what do you mean, that "that was no earthquake"? Then what was it? Looks like I get to keep you around a little longer.
Huh.
Yeah, looks like it.
I like this place.
It has good energy.
(small laugh) Where are you going? I need to check on my dad.
(distant baby crying) Hello? (baby crying) The bar is closed! (baby crying) You don't have to go home but you can't stay here.
(baby crying) (baby crying) (screaming) Jesus Christ, Roman! You scared the shit out of me! I'm so sorry.
What're you doing here? Do you guys have anything to eat? I'm staying at my mom's place and and all she has is expired soup and expired green beans.
- I can I can pay.
- Oh, no, no, no.
I can wrangle you something.
Thank you.
I heard about the bus.
Jesus.
You okay? Yeah.
I was, uh I was lucky.
No shit.
So you're staying at your mom's? Is she ever coming back? Hmm.
Who knows with her? She's a free spirit.
You guys don't talk at all? She sends Father Dan letters every once in a while with some cash or you know, honestly I I just don't give a shit.
Okay, well I'm gonna see if I can find you some real food.
Thank you.
I want every rivet and bolt checked, boys.
How's it going up there, Marty? Looks good up here, boss.
There's no cracks, no stress on the joints.
All right.
Let's get off of this heap of shit.
You don't have to ask me twice.
(groaning) All right, boys, I'm pulling the plug on this.
(groans) What do you want? Hey, Norm.
Here to turn yourself in? Uh, no.
I I was um, I was wondering if Sam was in? - The sheriff? - Yeah, thanks for clarifying that.
Is he in or not, Norm? Yes, yes, one second.
Yeah, hey, it's Norm down at the station.
Yeah, I'd like to order one pepperoni and one Hawaiian for delivery Sam! - Roman, get back here! - Sam! - Can I talk to you in private? - Uh, can it wait? I'm up to my ass in shit.
Just two minutes, please.
Come on.
Okay, come on in.
Have a seat.
You have my undivided attention.
Um, I I look, I know that people think that I'm crazy, right, - and touched in the head.
- I don't.
- Something happened on that bus.
- Right.
No shit? No, something I didn't tell you.
Something that I can't quite explain.
When I went to try and save Mrs.
Foon there were these forces.
- Forces? - Working against me, yeah.
And the people who died, they when they died they came they came back.
They they came back? - Yeah.
- I'm just telling you what I saw.
Are you talking about ghosts? - Roman? - Hmm? Um, I think you've been through a lot.
You know, it can be, um, traumatic.
- No.
- I think you're experiencing shock.
I'm not experiencing shock, - We We all are.
- I'm telling you It's not just you it's - Something's going down at the bridge.
- I gotta go.
Listen, I know you've seen something horrible.
I I need you not to talk about ghosts, okay? Okay.
People are already upset enough, okay? Can I count on you for that? Yeah, of course.
You can count on me, Sam.
(drip) (old time music plays) This is definitely your colour.
Marcus, honey, can you pass me the blush? Thank you.
(screams) Port Moore Police, please hold.
Port Moore Police, please hold.
Port Moore Police, please hold.
Police, what's your emergency? Hey, I need your help up here! Hello? Hello? All the systems just went down.
(murmuring) Jesus Christ.
We've never had death like this.
It can change a town forever.
It gets etched into our collective memory and it can define us.
Tell us who we are.
I know this is where I'm supposed to comfort you and tell you that it's all part of God's plan.
Well, this is not a sales pitch and I'm not some stranger.
I'm a neighbour and a friend first.
Speaking as someone who grew up in this town, I can only say is holy shit.
Holy shit.
Holy shit! Unholy shit.
You mean, father.
What's that, Doug? Unholy.
Everybody in this room is talking about how that freak was the only person to survive that crash.
Okay, Doug.
Calm yourself.
He's always lurking in the fringes, dressing like a ghoul.
He doesn't fit in.
He doesn't belong.
That's ridiculous.
You have no evidence that this boy has done anything.
What about his mother and what she did to - Enough! - His mother put a curse on this town! Alright, stop it! Her and her psychic bullshit! Stop it! This instant! - That's enough! - No! You will not blame this boy! He has done nothing! Nothing! This is fear talking! You're looking for blame! Well, I'm not gonna let you blame this boy! I'm not gonna allow it in the house of God! (thud) (door opens, closes) What?! It's, uh it's not good out there, Maggie.
They're blaming me for what's going on.
If they only knew.
What does that mean? You're special.
Your gift.
You're the only one who can see them.
(exhales) You really don't get what it's like for me, do you, Maggie? My gift? When I was six years old I had this friend.
His name was Thomas and, uh, we did everything together, you know? Uh, just regular best friends.
Uh, except Thomas had died a year earlier.
Car accident.
But he was my friend.
He was real to me.
Then these kids, these uh, these kids, they they jumped all over that.
They um, used it to push me away and call me names and it stuck.
Those names stuck.
It worked.
Because this whole town will never forget it.
So when you say I have this gift I don't know what the hell you're talking about, 'cause nothing good has ever come from this gift.
I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to It's okay.
So these ghosts, right? They're trapped here, so what do they want? They're not like me.
If a soul wants to move on but but finds itself trapped, that soul will lash out at the living.
They'll come at you and I can't protect you.
Next thing I know, the little creep's barging into the station blathering on about spirits this and undead that.
Sounds like somebody's trying to walk in his mother's shoes.
For all we know the little bastard caused the accident to drum up business for himself.
Hey, whatever you mouth breathers are thinking of doing, don't do it.
We're only talking.
Just a bunch of guys talking.
Mm-hmm.
See you guys later.
Thanks for the tip, Larry.
Hey.
I'm serious, Doug.
Leave that kid alone.
You, uh, you leaving town? As soon as they open the bridge.
I wanna be the first out.
That bad, huh? I have been around death almost my whole life, Roman.
Something's wrong here.
I don't know what but I don't wanna find out.
Marcus, let's go back inside.
I wouldn't stick around too long if I were you, Roman.
I don't care what that priest says.
We're not gonna sit around here and let you take this town down.
What're you gonna do, Doug? Something we should have done a long time ago.
You got two choices.
You leave town right now or we'll do things the old fashioned way.
Doug, I'm trying to leave town.
That's what I'm trying to do.
Try harder.
Don't test me, Doug Rennie.
Take him in, Norm.
- Do you want me to cuff him, or - No, don't cuff him, Norm.
Just take him in.
Come on, Doug.
We were just trying to scare the kid.
Okay.
Take him in.
Read him his rights.
Anybody lays a finger on Roman Mercer gets a free vacation in my jailhouse.
Am I clear? Jesus Christ.
Rodney, a hanging rope? Really? Give me the rope.
Give me the rope.
Do you wanna join your friend? Rodney? Say the words.
I don't wanna join my friend.
Okay.
Then quit encouraging him.
Now go on home.
All of you.
Go home.
Thank you.
You okay? Yeah.
I mean Can you, uh, can you give me a ride? Yeah.
I gotta do something first.
Come on.
(knocking) - Yeah? - Hey.
Hey.
Good afternoon.
- I'm sorry, Roman.
- Oh, no that's okay.
You were just protecting Marcus.
Norm said you had something to show me.
Yeah, we have to send this one to Anchorage for an autopsy.
No obvious signs of trauma.
Pull down the sheet.
Heart attack.
Ruptured.
His heart exploded.
(pew) How? Something terrified him.
Scared him to death.
Well, that doesn't make a lot of sense, medically speaking.
Yeah.
The problem is there's a lot of that going around.
Like the bus.
I tried to tell you.
I know.
I'm willing to listen now.
This earthquake, I don't think it was a normal tremor.
For the dead I think it was worse.
It was much, much worse.
It was worse for the dead? What does that even mean? I don't know.
I think that everyone who's died since the earthquake, they they can't move on.
- To the afterlife? - Why? Like I said, I don't I don't know.
But they're stuck here.
And they're angry, and they blame us.
(electric short) Sofia, I think it's best if you got Marcus out of here.
Because there's a ghost? - Yes, now, please.
Thank you.
- (Marcus): Cool.
(door slams) It's locked.
Like the bus.
Yeah, like the bus.
(cocks gun) Yeah, I don't know if that's gonna do anything, but sure.
What happens now? I couldn't tell you.
It knows I can see it.
It doesn't like that.
(growling) - Hey! - (gunshot) Sir get down, sir! - (gunshot) - Down! (gunshot) (struggling grunts) Sam! Sam! It's not real! - (crash) - It's not real! Look at me, Sam! (grunts) - Stop! - (gunshot) Stop you gotta stop it, man! You gotta look at me! Sam! Sam! It's in your head! - (grunts) - Whatever it is, it's in your head! (grunts) - (cries out) - No! No! No.
(groaning) No.
No, no! No, stop! Jesus.
It's okay, it's okay.
We're gonna get you some help, okay? I won't leave you.
Come on, Sam Sam.
Come on.
I think it's important, that we embrace the idea that there's more to life than what you can touch or see.
(snap) - No, no, no.
- Man, just stop! Put it down.
You saw it? I saw things, yes.
What happened? Sam.
Sheriff Sam, he's he's dead.
(woman screaming) (crowd screaming) Marty! Go! Go! Get out! Get out! Come on! Go! Go! Go! Go! Marty? You need to leave this place.
You have to go now! Go.
Leave.
What do we do? Okay? 'Cause I don't know what to do.
We evacuate the town.
Get people to safety.
- Evacuate? - Mmm.
Because of a few deaths and a bar fight, no way.
That was no bar fight.
Then what was it? Ghosts.
Ghosts.
I I know what it sounds like but It's evidence of the afterlife.
Evidence of another realm.
We may need to save the philosophical and religious implications conversation for another day.
The mayor's right.
We need to figure out what they want.
That's not what I'm saying at all.
Roman, do you know what they want? Between the bridge, the bus, and the bar, I think it's pretty obvious what they want.
So that's it? You guys are just gonna believe his ghost theories? It's faith, Val.
Faith is evidence of unseen things.
This all seems a little woo-woo.
Even for someone in the business of religion.
The bible's got serpents, angels, spirits.
It is a little woo-woo.
These are things that we're not supposed to comprehend yet we accept it.
Well, I need hard evidence before I accept it.
Before we go running off half-cocked.
Well, what I've seen with my own eyes is evidence enough for me.
Me too.
I've seen enough.
We need to notify the National Guard, the Army.
We need to get the hell outta here.
No, we need to all calm down.
I'm not ordering an evacuation just because you guys decide to believe in ghosts.
- Val, please.
- Anyone who wants to leave can leave.
But keep your mouth shut about this ghost nonsense.
(door opens, closes) We need to tell the world outside this town what's going on.
I want to come with you.
Look, I'm sorry about the way we treated you, Roman.
Until this happened I didn't know what to believe.
What do you believe now? I believe in ghosts.
And I believe in you.
- Stop the car! - Huh? The bridge the bridge is out! - What're you talking about? Looks fine.
- Larry! Larry, please.
- I'm looking Fine.
- Larry! Stop the I'm looking I'm looking right at it! Don't what Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop! Holy shit! What happened to Larry? He went over the edge.
What're you talking about? They they did it.
They they're making it seem normal but it's it's not.
It they can put things in your mind.
You can't you can't trust what you see.
I don't understand.
The section that section's gone.
It's missing.
An illusion.
The bridge is out.
We're trapped.
You know, we're You know, we're lucky to have you here.
And your gift.
We'd all be dead, otherwise.
So what do we do now? Figure out a way to fight it.
(horn honks) Oh, shit! Stop! Stop!
