Ghost Wars (2017) s01e04 Episode Script

The Exorcism of Marcus Moon

1 - Previously on "Ghost Wars" - Something's not right.
[rumbling.]
- [screaming.]
- Open that door and you'll kill us all! Let us out! [screaming.]
What if the accelerator combined with the earthquake ruptured something? Something's wrong here.
I don't know what but I don't wanna find out.
[gasps.]
You need to tell the world outside this town what's going on.
I'm not ordering an evacuation just because you guys decide to believe in ghosts.
Everybody in town's been seeing things, even me.
Everybody in this room is talking about how that freak was the only person to survive that crash.
Hey, loser.
Marcus! Up an at 'em.
Marcus! Marcus! Come on, let's go.
[train whistle.]
[clatter sounds.]
You shall not eat it or touch it or you will surely die! But we have obeyed your commitments.
We would never lie to you.
- [door opens.]
- Marcus.
What're you doing? Expelling Adam and Eve from paradise.
[clatter.]
What's for breakfast? Ever since you let those mad scientists move in on up the mountain this whole town's gone to shit.
And we don't see any of them suffering.
Or you, for that matter, Val.
Lambda's in the same boat as all of us, Winston.
And they've been very generous Why isn't anyone fixing the bridge? We'll fix the bridge.
As soon as we can, but obviously our resources are limited right now.
There's next to nothing at the grocery store.
I mean, we're already running low on supplies.
I'm happy to sit with you all to discuss individual concerns later.
The focus of this meeting is to find creative solutions to resolving our problems.
Now, who has access to a short wave radio or a satellite phone? Obviously establishing communication with the mainland has gotta be a priority.
A satellite phone? That's your plan? We already know that the satellite phones don't work.
Do people even know what's happening to us? - Why haven't they sent help? - We got to figure this out.
- I can't anwser that, but - [crowd clamouring.]
Okay, listen.
One at a time.
Guys, we live here because we're resilient.
Remember the blizzard of '03? We got snowed in for almost seven months and still we persevered.
There weren't any ghosts in the damn blizzard.
Doug Rennie knew how to solve that problem.
No, no, no.
Roman saved our asses out - on that bridge! - Who's side you on? - Who's side are you on? - Take it outside, guys.
Doug Rennie really try and kill you? What a dick.
- You didn't see it! - You have the badge! You didn't see it! Sit down.
Threaten you, definitely.
Work you over a little bit, but murder? That's crossing the line.
[clears throat.]
Uh, thanks, Shane.
Yeah.
Now is not the time to turn on each other.
Not now.
Hallucinations, apparitions, call it what you will.
We are all in the same boat.
We are in a time of crisis.
Now I for one am relieved that Val is in charge.
- She's doing an incredible job.
- Sure is.
[applause.]
Fear.
It thrives on standing alone.
Community.
Brotherhood.
That's how we persevere.
I think that's Val's message.
We should never have to feel alone.
St.
Martin's doors are always open, you know that.
You can come by any time you want.
You want to talk, or if you need support or you're running low on food I'll make sure there's coffee and fresh muffins for everyone.
- Okay.
- Thank you, Carol.
- [applause.]
- Dan, can I have a word? Yeah.
This was supposed to be a civic meeting not a sermon.
I'm trying to help, Val.
By turning this into a commercial for St.
Martin's? We're facing a shit storm, Dan.
Yeah, I know that.
I was at the bridge.
I was at the bridge, and I've been to the bus crash and Billy's boat.
These are all tragic accidents, nothing more.
Goler's cabin? These people elected me mayor, not you.
Yeah.
My job is to keep them safe, not to mention sane.
I'm on your side, Val.
Then stop playing on their fears, Dan.
What've you been teaching Marcus in catechism? That God is love.
It doesn't look that way to me.
Well, that's some insight considering you haven't volunteered in a while.
Just dial back the fire and the brimstone, okay? [scoffs.]
Sophia is accusing me of leading our younger parishioners astray.
Well, if you have a problem with catechism, Sophia There's no problem in catechism.
No, it's Marcus.
What's happened? Can we speak in private? If I'm being accused of something - I have every right to - Excuse us, Carol.
Is he ill? No, he's fine, physically.
He's just, um you know, I can't explain it.
He's not acting like himself.
Well, that's not surprising considering everything that's going on.
I just feel like I'm screwing everything up.
No, you're not, of course you're not.
Father Dan.
Um, what time you guys open? 10:00 am every day.
- Uh, so confessions, how does that work? - Are you gonna be okay? Yeah.
I should go.
Marcus is in the car.
I'll be at the church, you know, if you want to talk more.
I'd like that.
Wine and crackers.
That's at the beginning or the end of the service? Watch your back.
It's the kissing cousins.
Jesse? Nadine? Hey, how do you do that, man? How do you know when we're sneaking up behind you? What's with the superpowers, dummy? - They're not powers.
- No.
That is so cool.
Hey, were your, like, ears burning, too? What, because you were talking about me? - Exactly! - That is so cool! Oh, my God, they are such assholes.
Okay, bye.
Thank you.
Hey, hey.
Uh, we were wondering, maybe if you're not busy later you can swing by our place, man.
We could shoot some pool.
Maggie: Shooting pool balls at your head maybe.
They're so transparent.
They want you to clear the ghosts out of their house.
Uh, do you have any paranormal issues? Dude, yes.
Okay, you gotta help us, okay? We haven't slept in like a week.
And every time we try to my mom appears and she's all - messed up and rotted.
- Yeah, but she's still a fucking bitch.
- Christ, Randeen, that is my mom.
- She called me a skank whore.
- It's not his mom.
- It's not your mom.
- Don't tell them! - How do you know? I just know.
It's a ghost.
I'll see what I can do.
Hey, thanks buddy! And we're serious, you know.
You need to come over and hang out.
It's been like forever.
That was my fifth birthday.
You're too nice to those jerks.
It's gonna bite you in the ass.
Maggie, leave them alone.
You think it's me? It's not me.
Roman.
It is Roman, right? Who's that? I'm Dr.
Barker.
I'm a friend of Billy's.
He told me what happened on the boat.
Can I get you a cup of coffee? Uh, sure? She wants something from you.
- Just like everyone else.
- It's just a coffee.
Yes.
Coffee.
So you see dead people? Yeah.
- Just like the - Just like the movie, yeah.
Right.
How do they manifest? Oh, they're just sort of just there, you know? Right now? Where? Oh, there's one right there.
What's he doing? He's just sorta just watching us.
I would love to get you up to Lambda.
Pick your brain a little.
Run some tests.
Maybe we can measure what's going on when you see what you're seeing.
Why? I think you could be the key to understanding all this.
I doubt that.
I just want answers, Roman.
Yeah.
Look, uh, thank you.
I'm not I don't think I'm gonna be able to help you.
I'll pay.
How much? Enough to get you out of here.
I know that's what you want.
[squeaking.]
If you are in there again you are in big trouble, mister.
Marcus! Father Dan.
Door's locked.
Better pray for that guy.
I don't think it'll help.
[laughs.]
[crash sound.]
Wow, a lot of people.
[clears throat.]
Go.
Thanks.
Can you open your mouth, stick out your tongue for me? - [Aaah.]
- [Aaah.]
Can you count to ten for me? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
Very good.
I'm gonna write you a prescription for one of these.
Can I have two? Is that okay with Mom? Go ahead.
Wanna go visit the girls? They're in the dining room.
Okay.
- Thank you.
- Yeah, you're welcome.
So he did that to himself, huh? - You don't think I did it? - No, no, no.
I'm just I'm surprised by the amount of pressure that he used.
Marilyn, he was off the ground.
Okay.
Hi, Marcus.
It's rude to stare.
I saw the whistling man.
He was wearing a big black dress and he had long arms and pointy teeth.
He had bright red eyes.
The whistling man is gross.
No he's not, because the whistling man isn't real.
He's like the tooth fairy.
Yes, he is.
Yeah.
That's him.
No it's not, because he doesn't exist.
He's totally real.
Remember how all rats followed him out of the town because of his whistling? And then the people didn't pay him so he came and took all the kids? That was the pied piper, dummy.
No, it's the whistling man.
And at night, when it's really foggy, he lures kids into the fog by the sound of his whistle.
And once you're lost he turns you into a rat.
[whistling.]
It sounded just like that.
So why didn't he turn you into a rat? He says he has other plans for me.
Father? I was looking for you after the town hall meeting.
Hmm.
Well, you know, hell is other people.
I meant to give you this.
It slipped my mind with everything going on.
"Thinking of you.
Love, Mom.
" Short and sweet.
If someone asked you to be a lab rat, what would you what would you say? If they asked me like that I'd say no.
This is Lambda? Yeah, one of the, uh, scientists asked if they could pick my brain.
What'd you say? Nothing yet.
I don't know.
I just it feels weird, getting paid money for my thing.
Well, you've accepted payment before.
Yeah, but Father that was different.
Someone wanted to give me something in return.
But I I don't know.
Something about it being so prearranged.
It feels wrong.
It feels like it feels like something my mother would do.
Your mother was troubled.
If you did it you might get some answers.
About what's happening here? About your life.
What if I don't like what I find out? Well, we'd go through that together.
Remember, it's what you do afterwards that makes a difference.
Thank you, Father.
Hey, uh, do you know the mortician's son, Marcus? Yeah.
Maybe you should check on him.
[organ music playing.]
Thank you, Carla.
When I was preparing this sermon I was struck by the sheer amount of people I have spoken to since the day of the earthquake.
Many members of our community, some who I've never met before, have lost their faith.
Everyone who has reached out to the church, I can't tell you how much it gladdens my heart.
[giggling.]
It's far too easy to feel frightened.
To feel alone in times of trouble.
So I took notice of this passage, the one that I will share with you now.
"Put your faith in God so that the things that frighten us, "the things that disturb us, can be washed away.
" [giggling.]
"For we are all under his divine protection.
"We exist under his loving shadow.
"Let nothing else worry or disturb you.
" [laughing.]
Marcus, what is the matter with you? - You're a liar.
- Marcus! - I'm sorry, this isn't like him.
- There is no God here.
Tell them, Father.
Stop it! Let's go! You're damning us all to hell.
Let's go.
Stop it.
[choking.]
Marcus! [vomiting.]
Be careful.
Hey.
I am so sorry about this morning.
Nothing to be sorry over.
- How's he doing? - Oh, he's fine now.
Yeah? Good.
And you? How're you holding up? I don't know what to do anymore.
It's like he's another person.
Hey! Come over and say hi to Father Dan! Hey.
Hey.
Is there something you wanted to say to Father Dan? Sorry.
Hey.
I get it.
Everything's all right.
I understand.
You and I okay? Good.
What do you say we go on inside and have a talk? Let's do it.
I want you to know that I appreciate your apology.
But still we're gonna need to talk about what you said in church today.
[speaking Latin.]
What's that? [speaking Latin.]
Who taught you that, son? Who taught me what? Can I go play? Yeah.
You wanna talk about what happened at the church? You know you can tell me anything, okay? No secrets between us.
I know.
Mom, can you turn that off? Are you sure? You always want your night light on.
You don't have to pretend you're not scared.
Turn it off.
Goodnight, little man.
Night, Mom.
Cut it out.
What's your problem? I know it was you.
What're you talking about? The whistling.
It wasn't me.
[whistling.]
It was the whistling man.
Don't be stupid.
[whistling.]
It's coming from the closet.
Don't! Don't be a baby.
[screams.]
What is happening in here? - Girls.
- Marilyn.
Come here.
So you say you derived your knowledge from talking to dead people? No.
Ghosts, they they tell me things and I pass along the information.
For example, Sonja thinks you're really great.
And she's proud that you were able to tame the beast.
Sonja? - It's Carla's mom.
- Who's been dead for 12 years.
Exactly.
She thinks that you guys are gonna make really great parents but she wishes that you weren't so jealous of Norm.
- I'm not jealous of Norm.
- Is Carla's mom in the room right now? No.
She, uh, she usually hangs out at the bar - to be closer to Carla, - Right.
but I haven't seen her since before the earthquake.
Uh, what happened after the earthquake? They changed.
The ones from before, they they looked normal.
These new ones, they uh, they're different.
New ones? Can they talk to you, like Sonja? No.
No, I don't think they want anything to do with me.
Would you be willing to try again? [exhales.]
Yeah, okay.
If you had a patient that was acting out of character, saying strange things that he or she at their age shouldn't know about, would you have a medical explanation for that? What kinds of things? Foreign languages that he or she wouldn't have learned.
Maybe they learned them from a video game.
These are more obscure phrases.
I see you haven't met the internet.
It's not just languages.
Unexplained illness, personality changes.
Do I know who we're talking about? Those all sound like reasonable responses to recent psychological stressors.
Then you could diagnose a problem? Well, no.
No.
Well, then the cause may not be physical or psychological.
You're not talking about possession, are you? I never said that.
There are extraordinary things happening in this town, Doctor.
- I can't get involved in this.
- You took an oath, didn't you? Do no harm? Maybe the greatest harm is in doing nothing.
I'm a doctor.
I have to use my best judgement.
So do you.
Thank you for your time.
[sighs.]
[wind whistling.]
[talking under his breath.]
I believe that that Marcus is under the influence of a malicious spirit.
You think my son is possessed? I know it's hard to hear, but I don't make that allegation lightly.
It's more common than you think.
Marcus is showing definite signs of demonic possession.
And we need to act now, or it can get worse.
I'm not losing him.
I saw Chloe Reed.
She was a scientist on my team.
A friend.
She died during the earthquake.
I saw her here.
She was real.
And then her face started melting.
The room felt like it was filling up with gas.
I couldn't breathe.
I think she blames me for her death.
Why would she do that? Because I let her die.
Chloe, Nassir, and Dylan, they were trapped in the fuel cell room during a hydrogen gas leak.
Landis couldn't open the door otherwise she would have put the entire facility at risk.
If you wanna do this you have to shut down the main power grid.
Electricity affects them.
- Yeah.
- But you guys already knew that.
It's your call.
Shut it down.
Is she here? Yeah, she's here.
[kiss.]
Jesus.
What is happening, Roman? Mercer, what is happening to her?! It's enveloping her.
I've never seen anything like it.
Well, do what you're here for! Mommy? Repeat after me.
Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
Christ have mercy.
No, mama I don't want this.
Shh Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
Repeat after me.
Lord have mercy.
Lord have mercy.
Christ hear us.
- You're a liar, you faking bitch! - Sophia, Christ, hear us! You let your husband die and now you're gonna kill your son! Christ hear us! Mommy? - Mommy, please stop.
- You don't have to be here.
[wincing.]
You don't have to stay here.
No.
He needs me.
God, father in heaven.
- Have mercy on us.
- Have mercy on us.
Hello, priest.
It's time for your confession! Chloe? I look, I know that you blame her for your death but it wasn't her fault.
You need to let her go.
[screaming.]
Just let me try and help! - That's it, I'm turning the grid back on.
- Okay? Let me you need to go! I said leave her alone! God, the son, the redeemer, all have mercy on us.
We sinners, we beg you to hear us.
To spare us.
To pardon us.
- [screaming.]
- To bring us to our true penance.
You want him? Take him, whore! Give me back my son! Why isn't this working? We cast out every unclean spirit.
Every satanic power.
Every onslaught of infernal adversaries! [speaking Latin.]
[demonic growling.]
[panting.]
Hang on.
It's okay.
It's okay.
Ms.
Landis, it's okay.
It's okay.
It's okay.
Shh.
It's okay, it wasn't real.
It wasn't real.
It's okay, it's okay.
It's okay, it's okay.
It's okay, it's all right.
Our father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name - [sobbing.]
- Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in Earth As it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
Mommy, I had a bad dream.
Forgive those who trespass against us And lead us not into temptation.
Deliver us from evil.
[speaking Latin.]
Amen.
Thank you.
Thank you for my son.
I've lived with this my whole life, and I don't even understand it, so Think of it this way.
These beings, these ghosts, exist at a specific frequency and you are tuned to receive them.
Radio.
So I'm like radio for the afterlife.
You're so much more than that.
What people think of as the supernatural could be echoes proving the quantum universe.
The afterlife is a place, we live parallel to it, you can see it.
Roman, you're the next evolutionary step.
[laughs.]
Yeah.
- I'd like you to come back.
- No.
No thank you.
Why not? Because I can't guarantee your safety.
Is that for me? Yeah.
Pleasure doing business with you.
What do you think happened? I think that you guys opened up a can of worms here.
Shit happens.
It's what you do afterwards that makes a difference.
"Thus, said the Lord, "blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord "who's trust is the Lord.
"He is like a tree planted by water "that sends its roots by the stream "and does not fear heat when it comes, "for it shall not cease to bear fruit.
" [crowd.]
blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked.
You killed him.
[sobbing.]
It's not your fault, Father.
You can't absolve me, Roman.
You were trying to save Marcus.
I killed him.
It was my doing.
Mine.
[sobbing.]
Dear lord Jesus Christ, redeemer and saviour, please forgive me for my sins as you did Peter's denial and those who crucified him.
Please do not count my transgressions but my tears of repentance.
Please, God.
Please, Lord.
[crumbling.]
[rocks tumble.]
[gasps.]
Blessed be those who seek the truths, for God will reward them with fruits of heaven.
