Episode 4

The police came.
Janine said I was with her.
You cheated on Tina.
I'm an apprentice jockey.
What happened to him? Come back! You forgot your bag.
I try and make the right decisions.
You're keeping an eye on the entire police force.
I've gotten in.
You are wrong about me, Ruth.
Stop, police! Oi, Dom, I've just walked fucking miles, mate.
Morning.
No, exercise does not agree with me.
Stop being such a pussy.
I've got my sciatica to worry about.
You don't have sciatica.
I might have sciatica.
You don't even know what sciatica means.
I might know what sciatica means.
Just check it.
It's all here.
Just wake me when we're near.
Jesus! What the fuck? Shit.
What the fuck? Don't fucking move! All right, take it easy - it's in the back.
Dom, what the fuck is going on? It's Janine.
Last night, Janine Reilly, aka Elizabeth Marshall, was attacked.
The assailant called the emergency services, which suggests it was not pre-meditated.
The vehicle DC Rosen identified leaving the scene was a yellow Citroen Saxo like this one.
I want this car found.
A pendant was also found near the scene of the crime.
It has been sent off for DNA analysis.
Everyone's going to be watching us, so let's not miss anything.
OK, let's go.
Ruth, do you need to go home? Sometimes finding these things, seeing these things, does something to you.
It just made me want to do my job better.
I want you on Dominic Richards.
He's going to need an alibi for this one.
So I read something this morning.
About how coma patients talk with their brains.
You stick nodes in I don't really understand it, but no does different things to yes.
I don't really understand it.
What are you doing? Calling Rob again.
He won't pick up.
Well, he'll want to be here.
Probably hasn't got my message yet.
Maybe he's not ready to see this.
What does that mean? Nothing.
I read something else - about how if you really want a coma patient to hear you, you should sing to them.
You should really stop googling coma patients.
We didn't even know her real name.
And we thought she'd done it, soyesterday, I hated her.
I really hated her.
And now today she's here.
I was trying to find out if she was still in pain or not I don't think she's in pain, Annie.
It just all seems so big and horrible.
Why is this happening to us? It just is, Annie.
MOBILE BEEPS How was she? She's stable, for now.
And how about you, James? I'm scared.
Two of your friends Yeah, I know, Mum.
I was going to tell you later, but I've put in a call to the broker.
It's a big race day.
We let Blackout do her thing, and then I think it's time we sell her.
You're selling Blackout? I'm sick of worrying about tomorrow.
I think we should sell her and set things straight.
Who the fuck were those people, Dom? Who do you think tipped them off? What about the suppliers? Have you heard from them? Yeah.
Well? How much? 50,000.
Pounds? No, Rob, Mars bars.
But it wasn't us, we didn't do anything! We lost them a lorry load of gear.
It's our responsibility.
They want the shortfall paid.
Dom, this isn't They didn't hurt Cal? If they'd killed him, no-one would have found the body.
What do we do? Tina's going to get us what we need, and you're going to persuade her to help us.
Mate, not Tina.
I can't do that to her.
There'll be a way.
I've set it up.
Shit.
I thought you'd be at the hospital.
We got evicted.
Thought I'd come down, assist with the race prep.
I waited for you last night.
I see the new jockey's arrived.
Arrived, settled in.
Got out his tea mug.
Right at home.
He's young.
19.
He's the same age as you.
His dad's a horse nut, got some arrangement with a trainer.
His first few rides are paid for.
What, so he's shit? No.
He's rich, but he's strong.
Dom's on the path.
Tina.
You're up.
I've cleared it with Tony.
3.
50 at Newbury.
The Devereux Classic.
Think you can handle it? What, you mean on Black? But I thought that kid? I think you're ready.
Don't you? Are you serious? Yeah.
I'll see you later.
Is this an official interview? No, we just need to ask you a couple of questions just to establish where you were between ten and four.
You think I attacked Janine? Did you? We're not making any assumptions at this point, it's just we just need to know where you were.
I was with my dad.
We were playing cards.
Cribbage.
And your father is Danny Richards.
He works at Carver Stables.
He's head lad there.
And he can corroborate your story? I'd expect so.
It's the truth.
You can trust me.
You should know that.
Thanks for your time, Mr Richards.
Ruth! 'You can trust me.
' Really? 'You should know that.
' He doesn't have to try very hard to sound like a psychopath.
Hi.
Hi Good job you gave us an alibi for Elizabeth Marshall.
Shame it arrived so late.
Isn't that confidential? If you still love Tina, you might want to try being honest with her.
You don't understand.
OK.
Mum? I don't have long.
I've got to get changed.
But you will not believe what's actually happened.
Got your celebrating in early, then.
It was just you and Dominic? Just the two of us.
We drank some whisky, played cards.
Cribbage.
He beat me.
Thanks for your time, Mr Richards.
If we've any further He was with you the whole time? He didn't go anywhere at all? Where would he go? Sin'? You're doing well.
I'm sorry? Being a good girlfriend and protecting him.
Keeping it up.
What? I know he was with you.
When? Ruth, we're needed, and fast - the analysis on the pendant came back and they're bringing in Joe Petulengro.
Calm it down! All we're asking for is for Mr Petulengro to come with us for questioning.
You take one step over that line, see what happens.
This doesn't have to be difficult.
This is harassment.
To be clear.
I will arrest you.
Until you tell me on what charge, I'm not going.
Joseph Petulengro, I'm arresting you for obstruction of justice.
Oh, here we go! Rosen, I'll need you in the interview to translate.
Where were you? We were with Janine.
Yeah, my battery died.
I even tried calling your home phone, but Rob I'm racing.
The Devery Classic Wow.
That's, erm I know I shouldn't be happy today of all days.
I think it's a pretty normal feeling to have.
Is it? And Tina What? About this race I thought I just some thoughts bubbling up.
I'm really proud of you.
You're right.
It's my day.
I'm going to shine out.
Be who I know I can be, do the thing I do.
Yeah.
Do you recognise this? It was found at a crime scene.
It has your DNA on it and Caleb Bray's.
A young woman was brutally attacked less than 30 feet away.
What were you doing at Elizabeth Marshall's house? What, you think I was there? Weren't you? No.
The evidence suggests you were.
Well, the evidence is wrong.
You know, I don't understand you people.
You people? I'm not a racist.
You ask us questions - why we keep our kids from your schools, why we don't want your police, but you never ask yourselves any questions at all, do you? We believe that you have corrupted yourselves and we, as a people, have decided to keep our children and ourselves free of your soil, your crap.
Now, you might be a dever and just man.
I don't know if you're racist or not, but the thing is I don't recognise your authority because I don't believe in the laws that gave you that authority in the first place.
Therefore I refuse to accept you.
You really think you're free? You think we're not? I think you're just as trapped as everyone else.
Always was the clever one, even as a little girl, the one with all the answers.
I look at you now, and all I see is an ignorant, soft gorja.
You threw a single mother and her eight-year-old daughter out onto the street.
I let her stay when you were born, despite yourheritage.
Despite the fact the man - your father - couldn't wait to fuck off.
But when she strayed again and made the same mistake twice, I couldn't fucking have it, Ruth.
Calm down and return to the matter in hand.
She never told you about him, did she? I wanted you to stay but your mother wouldn't have it.
I wanted that more than anything - but this all happened because your mother is fucking weak.
Sit down, Rosen! You call me ignorant, you call me gorja.
I'd rather be a fucking gorja.
Fuck you! Calm down! We couldn't let her pollute the site.
I hope you're stronger, Ruth, and a better mother to that child.
What the hell are you playing at? He didn't do it.
I don't understand you.
You behave like that in there and then come out here and tell me he didn't do it.
I think we should be paying more attention to Dominic Richards.
You're tired.
You've had a shock.
Go home.
I'm not making a request! Go home! I hear you're racing.
Yeah.
Good luck.
Tina.
Yeah.
Dominic, can I trust him? You're talking to me about trust? You know him.
You work with him.
You know that everyone knows, don't you, about you two? Yeah.
Look Today I trust him.
Today I think he's a good man.
Underneath it all.
Ten grand 5-1 against.
OK First of all, I really like the colour scheme.
Secondly, the decor is actually quite I mean, I like it.
Are you alone in here? I'm the only girl racing.
And this, what's this? Ride, my brave What's the name of the horse in the Lone Ranger again? I dunno.
Ride, my brave! Giddy up.
Come on, horsey! Sorry.
Tintin You're going to win this.
How long are you home for? I don't know.
And have you been disciplined or? I don't know.
Fine.
If you're here, I'm going out.
You have her for the afternoon.
We interviewed Joe Petulengro today.
They think he did it? He talked about you.
And what did he say? That you were weak.
Your father wasn't a nice man, but Mark I thought Mark was different.
They gave me an ultimatum.
I thought he loved me.
You were wrong.
Yeah, well, that's the last man I ever trusted.
Hello? I know you're looking for Chris, but can I talk to you? Stay there, I'm coming down.
Who are you? I'm not going to hurt you.
I just want to find out what happened to my brother.
Why it happened! What do you think? Yeah, it's nice.
I've got a mirror and flowers.
I mean, what the fuck do you do with flowers? I'm actually glad you're here.
Eli went AWOL despite the fact he promised me he'd be here, and I went to see Mum but - well, she We need you to throw the race.
What? The race.
We need you to throw it.
What are you talking about? Me and Dominic - we're in a bit of trouble - we owe some people some money - we need to get the money to them fast.
The odds are stacked.
Dom knows a bookies, a dodgy bookies that'll take a big bet.
The fastest way for us to get the money back is we're betting against you.
You're lying.
I'm not.
I'm really sorry.
How much do you owe them? These people? 50,000.
50 grand? What the fuck did you do, Rob? I can't tell you.
It'd make it worse for you if I did.
You want me to do that? Fuck my whole career, my whole life, and you won't tell me why? If I don't pull the race, if I don't do it, what will happen to you? Tina, I can't even they're They scare me.
Guess I've got no choice, then.
Tina Please go.
You look amazing, Mum.
Today it seemed worth the effort.
Do you think Tina's up to it? Yeah, I really do.
Hello, Jackie.
Giles.
Wonderful to see you.
I see you've gone hard with the hat.
Is it a bit much? It's perfect.
We have some very interesting buyers present.
Shall we take the horse to water? OK.
I'm going to be five minutes, OK? I'll be back in five minutes.
Tina, Tina! Mum, you're here.
Like I'd miss this.
Your big moment.
You can do it.
Go on, girl.
'.
.
here at Newbury today.
Soon to join them in the paddock 'and they'll be off down to the start and this much-anticipated prize.
' '.
.
the tension and the sense of expectation here is rising 'by the minute, as Blackout leads them out to the start 'of the big race of the afternoon.
' '.
.
much expectation around all the runners, 'but particularly around Blackout and particularly around Tina Fallon' 'Ian Salter's phone, leave your message after the beep.
' Why is your phone still off? I've found something important.
Come on, Cassie.
I know Simpson sent me home, but I went to Dominic Richards'.
Call me back.
'.
.
Blackout really hardening as the favourite here.
'It seems this large crowd at Newbury this afternoon are interested in one runner only.
It's Blackout, and it's Tina Fallon.
' OK, one second.
Why don't we get you out and do some walking, hey? 'And we're off!' Shit! 'And it's Blackout by a nose' 'As we approach the halfway stage, Blackout is pulling clear, 'Blackout by a length from Solaris.
'Blackout looking very strong and capable as they kick for home.
' Come on, girl.
Keep your head, Tina.
Come on, Tina! '.
.
Blackout looks strong in front as they turn towards the main stand' Stop! What the fuck?! '.
.
Solaris and Seventh Seal as they come down into the dosing stages '.
.
Blackout in front' 'Blackout is starting to fade as Solaris improves, 'Solaris by a nose' She's slowing.
Why is she slowing? 'Tina Fallon is almost sitting up on the horse.
'Solaris pushes hard for the line.
' I've got a young male, driving a yellow Saxo.
Cassie 'And it's Solaris, Solaris from Seventh Seal in second, 'from Ishmar in third.
' Giles.
Cassie! Eli.
Thank God.
Is she all right? Give her to me.
Eli, pleasegive her to me.
Eli, give me my child! She was in the road.
Oh, God I just left her, just for a minute.
I've been telling Cassie the story of how the violin was made.
Do you know it? Please.
Are you going to give me my daughter back? Mum told me it.
Not sure if she told Cal.
It's a story about this girl who lives in a hut with her mother and father and four brothers.
She's in love with this handsome, rich huntsman who ranges the forest, but he ignored her.
Just can I just check if she's all right? This girl tries everything to attract this huntsman but nothing worked, so she did what desperate people do she called on the Devil.
And the Devil came.
'I'll make him love you, ' he said.
'I'll make him love you and only you for ever, 'but in return you must give me your four brothers.
' And the girl was torn, horribly torn, but she loved this huntsman so much that she agreed.
And the Devil killed her four brothers and made four strings of them.
And she said, 'But what do I place them on? And the Devil smiled and he said, 'For that I need your father.
' And of her father he made a box and pulled the four strings made of her four brothers across it, and it was a fiddle.
And she tried banging this fiddle and plucking this fiddle but the noise that it made was ugly.
He said to her, 'To make a pretty noise, for that I need your mother.
' And the girl wept and begged but the Devil didn't care, so finally she gave in.
And of her mother he made a bow and with it he played the fiddle.
Eli, I need to take her home, my mum is waiting for us.
And the huntsman did come and together they danced and that's how the violin was made.
You're going to have to make a choice soon about who you want to be, where your loyalties lie, and who you'll be honest to, or you'll just hurt those you love most.
Just give her to me.
Jackie.
Don't be too hard on her, will you? You could've put a monkey on that horse and it would have won.
Look, she'll do better next time.
She's the best.
James, tell her.
That is the main problem with your generation - you think you get a second chance.
You don't.
Jackie James.
Didn't you hear her? No more second chances.
We're done, right? You got any idea who did it? Because we wouldn't hijack our own truck.
It might have been Cal who Yeah, we're done.
I lost 20 quid on you today.
I'm not in the mood.
I'm not worried, though.
I know I'll just win it back, next time you race.
Are you sure about that? Remember what you said to me about trust, about never trusting me? What's your point, Ruth? I want to be true to you.
I have to tell you something, and it's something that you're not going to want to hear.
It's about Rob.
About Rob and Janine.
Sorry, I didn't realise anyone was in here.
I'll come back later.
Are you a friend? Yeah yeah A good friend? Yeah, I tried to be.
I'm Susannah.
I'm her mother.
We hadn't seen her in so long.
Do you mind me asking you what she's like? Dominic.
Dominic.
Open up.
You looking for him too? I lost a one-er on that girl.
I don't know what you see in him.
Trouble with my son, always trying to be something he isn't.
Bending what he is, landowner, horse trainer I bet he doesn't even fuck you straight.
Landowner? Well, I guess it's not just me he keeps secrets from, then.
You'll probably find him by the red barn.
Don't come too close, I've been vomiting.
Have you? Well, not in here.
I wouldn't in here.
I'm not even going to apologise for it.
Made me feel better, makes me feel better.
Sometimes it doesn't but who gives a shit? I saw the race.
Why did you do it? You knew? Well people needed me too.
Do they know what it means what you done? Probably not.
But you did it anyway? A mistake, as it turns out.
A mistake.
I learnt that a long time ago not to trust anyone.
But I keep slipping up.
I keep believing.
I keep fucking myself over.
I know now.
You looked good up there on that horse.
Doing the thing you do you were shining.
My breath probably stinks.
Come on, then.
Let's see what you're really made of.
Come on.
It's cigarettes, isn't it? You've been smuggling them, using the horsebox.
You and Rob.
I made a choice and now I'm paying for it.
I don't understand you.
All my life I've watched my dad never quite add up to the sum of his parts, always be second-rate, always not enough.
I've seen it, I've seen what it's done to him.
I don't want to be like that.
So you just break the lam I wanted to buy this land.
All of it.
I wanted this to be mine.
To have my own stables here.
Cal found out, didn't he? That's why you were arguing.
It was nothing to do with him joyriding.
If it makes any difference, I'm not doing it any more.
Got a whole lot robbed this morning.
Someone, probably Cal, tipped them off.
And last night when you told me you were with your dad and you told your dad that you were with me? Last night I was outside your house waiting for you.
You do something to me.
I don't understand it.
It's just when I'm around you there's a part of me being unpicked.
Coming away.
I don't know what to do about you.
What happens now? Nothing.
Just go home, forget about it.
Nothing happened, I never knew nothing.
Ruth? What? What about me and you? There is no me and you.
'All units, 'Joseph Petulengro is being released from custody.
'Benji Petulengro was at the scene of Elizabeth Marshall's assault.
'No further charges.
' What? We should be able to trust each other, not keep each other in the dark.
Why did you do this to me? All I wanted was the truth.
I didn't want this! I can't trust you, you threw a fucking race.
Wait! You wait right now! You can't shoot me! You aren't listening to me, are you? You leave this case, Ruth, or I go.
Whatever you think you know you don't.
