Gotham Knights (2023) s01e08 Episode Script

Belly of the Beast

Previously on "Gotham Knights"
We've been set up.
TURNER: We're gonna find
who really killed my dad
and clear our names.
STEPHANIE: Turner, you need
to get out of there right now.
Cressida is one of them.
She's working with the Court of Owls.
The Court killed my dad,
and now they're trying to kill me.
DUELA: And what the Mutants take,
we taketh away.
HARPER: It's a Court of Owls watch.
So is this one.
Hello.
HARVEY: Why did I wake up with
no memory of how I got there?
EUNICE: When I was young, I would attend
the most elegant parties
the Court would throw.
We always wore masks. Ha ha ha!
STEPHANIE: Every painting
that was taken was owned
by Alan Wayne at the time of his death,
and who do we know that's
interested in all things Alan Wayne?
The Court of Owls.
It can't be just a painting.
The hell are you doing here?
I need your help.
My life is in danger.
As promised.
[SNIFFS]
Then we in business?
[THWIP, THWIP]
- Ugh!
- Agh!
[GUNFIRE]
[PUNCH LANDS]
Aah!
- [PUNCH LANDS]
- [GRUNTING]
WOMAN: What the hell?
- Whoa.
- Yep.
TURNER: There's enough firepower in here
to arm every criminal in Gotham.
I think that's their plan.
What are you doing?
Just so the cops know who to thank.
Cullen should be here by now.
Relax. He'll be here.
Harper, I don't think he's coming.
He'll be here.
[SIRENS]
OK. Maybe not.
Let's get out of here. Come on.
[TRUCK PLAYING MUSIC]
You stole a food truck?
It was the only thing
I could find. Let's go.
[TIRES SQUEAL]
[TIRES SQUEAL]
- HARPER: Where the hell were you?
- CULLEN: My watch stopped.
What do you mean, it stopped?
As in it stopped working. I don't know.
Isn't that one of
those insanely expensive
Court of Owls watches?
You could throw that thing in a volcano,
and it's supposed to keep ticking.
Yeah, that's what I thought, too,
but apparently quality timepieces
are hard to come by these days.
DUELA: I guess nobody cares
about craftsmanship anymore.
HARPER: Yeah, well, next
time, find a new one.
Otherwise, we end up behind bars.
I'm way ahead of you.
CARRIE: That's one
more in the win column.
We could bust up every
low-level criminal front
in this thing and still not get
any closer to finding the Court.
But at least we got a bunch of
illegal guns off the streets, you know,
made the city and the Narrows safer.
DUELA: Well, that's really great for you
and the upstanding citizens of Gotham,
but the rest of us here
are still wanted fugitives.
So maybe instead of
pretending to be heroes,
you could all be more focused on,
let's say it all together now
ALL: Clearing our names.
HARPER: We know. What do you
think we are trying to do?
DUELA: OK. Then tell me
why we just handed over
that painting that the
Court was so desperate
to get their hands on.
We could have used that
to find out who they are
because if we had names,
we would know who to target,
but instead, any leverage
we might have had,
we just gave away,
all to save that cop's family.
- We didn't have a choice.
- No, there's always a choice.
We just made a bad one.
CULLEN: Guys, you're
gonna want to see this.
Look.
Your broken Court of Owls Watch?
Nope. That's my broken
Court of Owls Watch.
So is this. So is that.
Notice anything?
HARPER: Whoa!
TURNER: Whoa.
I don't think they're broken at all.
I think they're working perfectly.
Yeah, but doing what?
Is this a safe house or a drug den?
Well, it's discreet,
and for someone whose other options are
behind bars or in the ground,
I'd say this is a step up.
The Court's not going to find you here.
You do realize you
need me alive to talk?
I need you to do a lot more than talk.
I need names, and I need proof.
And I need full immunity and an order
of federal protection, not the GCPD.
I'm working as fast as I can.
Well, so is the Court,
and if they find out I'm about to talk,
they will kill us both.
You'll be safe here. Just sit tight
- and don't go anywhere and don't talk to anyone.
- Harvey.
Help me.
I will, but you have to help me.
You're exerting yourself too much.
I have to put in the effort.
It's good for my recovery.
[GROANS]
[SIGHS]
[GRUNTING]
I'll get something to
support your back. Hold on.
Ohh.
We had some of those lumbar pillows.
Everything OK?
Everything's fine.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
HARPER: 7:21 a.m.
STEPHANIE: What's the second hand at?
Uh, two seconds.
OK. So all 4 watches stop
simultaneously in a cycle of 3,
displaying the same 3 times of day.
7:21 a.m., 3:05 p.m.,
and 9 p.m. on the dot.
OK. So what's so special
about those times of day?
TURNER: You can bet the Court knows.
There's no way that's a coincidence.
No way it's good.
CULLEN: Maybe they're
planning something bad
to go down at each time on the watches.
Watches? Time.
CHILL: Watches all the time.
Watches all the time.
[PRISON DOOR SLAMS]
That son of a bitch.
- DUELA: Who?
- TURNER: Joe Chill.
He said the key to finding the Court was
"Watches all the time."
It was a rumor he heard,
but he didn't know what it meant.
He just kept repeating the same part
of the rhyme over and over.
What if it means the key
to finding the Court of Owls
are the watches they give their members?
Like, each time is part of a code.
It's not just a time. It's a place.
One of them is a time,
9 p.m. on the dot,
and the other two are 7:21 and 2 seconds
and 3:05 and 13 seconds.
Pretty random unless it's not a time
and it's actually a
latitude and longitude.
A bunch of busted watches told you that?
- Sounds like a leap.
- Yeah, and a damn good one.
Let her finish.
Uh, latitude and longitude are expressed
in degrees, minutes, and seconds,
so I think the hour
hand is probably degrees.
Minute hand is minutes, and
the second hand is seconds.
I feel like I'm watching nerd porn.
So how do we get latitude and
longitude from those times?
You want the long version
or the short version?
TURNER, DUELA AND CULLEN:
The short version.
Latitude is 39 degrees,
21 minutes, 2 seconds,
and longitude is 75 degrees,
5 minutes, 13 seconds.
HARPER: OK. Let's see where that is.
STEPHANIE: The geocoordinates are
within the greater Gotham area.
Thank you, honors geography.
[BEEPING]
OK, so we have our time and our place.
Uh, when did your watch
start freaking out again?
Uh, last night, sometime after midnight.
OK. So technically today.
Then it's happening tonight.
What's happening tonight?
My dad's journals
mentioned that the Court
was rumored to hold clandestine meetings
in order to pass along information.
He theorized that
they preferred to do it
in person so that none of their
communications could be traced.
Not to mention they're,
like, uber secretive, right?
So they're not exactly going to send out
save the dates for their
little get-togethers.
How better to make sure
that info only reaches
their members than by something
only their members have?
OK. Why meet now?
DUELA: An art exhibit.
They did just complete their collection,
so maybe they want to celebrate.
I mean, it could be one
of those fancy parties
or secret ceremonies that dear
old Eunice was babbling about.
Whatever it is, looks like the Court
is having a little soiree tonight,
and we have the address.
CULLEN: The old Gotham
Light and Power facility.
It's been decommissioned.
Are you sure that's it?
HARPER: It's the only place in
the vicinity of the coordinates.
Eunice did say the Court held their
parties in the strangest places.
Well, that certainly qualifies.
[CELL PHONE VIBRATING]
Uh, give me a sec?
- STEPHANIE: Hello.
- MAN: Miss Stephanie Brown?
Yes, this is Stephanie Brown.
MAN: Your chlorzoxazone
prescription is ready.
- I'm sorry. I don't have a
- Uh, the brand name is Lorzone.
The prescription was called in
from your doctor this morning.
- OK.
- He said it was urgent.
Thanks for letting me know.
Sure thing.
I, um I
uh, have to go. Sorry.
Is everything all right?
Everything's great.
My fellow citizens of Gotham,
a few days ago, I was the
victim of an attempted homicide,
and all of the evidence
points to none other
than the fugitive at large
Turner Hayes as the primary suspect,
and, yes, he is still at large.
There are many unanswered questions
to this brutal assault,
but I only have one.
Where is Harvey Dent?
Mr. Dent, you're back.
- I've been calling you.
- Personal matters.
I'm here now.
You've already missed
the city council meeting,
and now you're 20 minutes late
to the campaign finance review.
Yes, I know. Thank you.
Sorry. It's been a day.
Can you get me Judge
Stevens on the phone?
I need to ask him for a plea deal.
For whom?
Just get him on the phone.
HARPER: You seriously want to
infiltrate the Court of Owls' lair?
TURNER: Not sure it's actually a lair,
but I'm not sure we
actually have a choice.
CULLEN: Do you know
how insane that sounds?
I mean, we might as well just chop off
our own heads and get it over with.
TURNER: We've been waiting
for an opportunity like this.
We have the watches.
We can just wait for the next meeting,
get ourselves better prepared.
And what if there is no next time?
We have no idea how
often the Court meets,
and Eunice said they never meet
in the same place twice, right?
This is our chance. We can't wait.
If we can get inside, we
might be able to find out
the identity of the Court members
and expose them,
maybe even get more information
about that painting they were jonesing
to get their hands on.
Look, this is the best
shot we've ever had
at ending all of this,
and we have to take it.
I'm done being afraid.
Sounds like you're done being alive.
We're talking about going
into the belly of the beast.
Exactly. That's the thing about owls.
They have no natural predators.
They don't know what
it's like to be hunted,
which means they won't see us coming.
And how exactly do you
plan to manage that?
DUELA: I think I know how.
We dress to impress.
OK. Only problem is we don't have masks.
Does Gotham Academy have a 3D printer?
In the arts lab.
I can use these as reference.
I'm pretty sure I can print out
exact replicas of these masks.
- It's brilliant.
- No, it's a long shot.
This owl soiree starts in just
a few hours, which means
I maybe have enough
time to make two masks.
So
who's going in?
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
[CELL PHONE VIBRATING]
Rebecca?
Oh, thank God.
Are you all right?
You heard Lincoln on the news?
Yeah. He's coming down on me
a little harder than usual.
I think he knows.
- How?
- I'm not sure.
His spies are everywhere.
We should never have risked it.
No, no. Maybe it's good that we did.
Maybe it's time that
Brody and I got out.
There's another side of him
the press doesn't see, Harvey.
He can be a dangerous man.
Cruel, even.
I'm getting you out of there.
I'm afraid.
Please hurry.
TURNER: We stick to the plan.
Go in, get as much intel as we can,
and get out.
- TURNER: No freelancing.
- DUELA: Damn.
Gotham Academy Theater
Department sure doesn't skimp
when it comes to wardrobe.
How do I look?
Um you look
different.
Pfft. Wow. Heh.
Send a girl's heart
aflutter, why don't you?
Sorry. Sorry. You, um
You look um
It's OK.
Relax.
I'll take speechless.
Actually, do you mind zipping me up?
- Oh, sure.
- Thank you.
You sure you're up for this?
I know you're not into playing hero.
Oh, I don't mind it
when I'm saving myself.
- Heh. Understood.
- Hmm.
Just I'm the one who's used to being
around a bunch of privileged asshats.
You? Not so much.
Well, don't get it twisted.
Those with privilege are no more
than glorified con
artists whose superpower is
tricking people into believing
they're more deserving and
better than the rest of us.
I'm familiar with the type.
Besides, I actually learned
from the best con artist in Gotham.
Who?
My mother.
Well, OK. Maybe not the best.
She's, uh she's been in
Arkham since I popped out.
By the time the authorities caught her,
she had taken on so many identities
that they didn't know
who she really was.
Neither did she, I guess.
They just called her Jane Doe.
The more time passes,
the harder I find it to remember
what my mom even looked like.
It scares me.
I'm sorry.
Just promise me you
won't do anything stupid.
It's too late.
I already volunteered to go with you.
[KNOCK ON DOOR]
Cressida?
[GRUNTS]
Damn it!
[PIANO PLAYING CLASSICAL MUSIC]
[HEART BEATING]
CULLEN: Looks like this is the place,
but if anybody wants me
to gun it out of here,
say the word.
This will record everything you see.
Comms are pretty spotty in the area,
so Carrie will plant
a frequency augmenter
on the roof so we can communicate.
And I'll watch your 6 in
case things go sideways.
Thanks for being here.
It's better than studying
for midterms, so
- What's wrong?
- Can't find my goggles.
I know that I left them somewhere
That's my bad.
I took the liberty of upgrading them.
Enhanced night thermal
and spectral light imaging,
and plus side, they're a
little less last decade.
Thank you.
CULLEN: Speaking of fashion accessories,
you two are gonna need these.
TURNER: Wow.
Um, they're perfect.
They're terrifying.
MAN: Oh, good. Here he comes.
WOMAN: Oh, my God, Preston. There he is.
Ha ha ha! Thanks for coming
out to the taping, folks.
This episode airs next week,
but remember, no spoilers.
Dad, can we talk?
That's my daughter Stephanie. Excuse me.
Now you look at your phone?
When I call, it goes
straight to voicemail.
Honey, you know, I turn my
phone off while we're filming.
I could have been in
trouble or dead or something.
Well, I certainly hope
it's not the first two.
I'm getting worried about Mom.
She was barely keeping upright
at the parents' luncheon.
The pain makes it hard for her
to be on her feet sometimes.
That accident was 5 years ago.
Her pharmacy called me today.
She's been filling extra
prescriptions in my name.
I don't think she
knows how to stop, Dad.
Is that all this is about?
Chronic means forever.
Doctors, they underprescribe.
She's in a lot of pain.
Why does she have to use
my name to get medication?
She uses mine on occasion.
That's how we take care of her.
Then we should get
her professional help.
Maybe rehab.
And what do you think will happen
when the tabloids get ahold of that?
Do you want your friends, your teachers,
the entire world to know your
mother's personal business?
- They wouldn't have to know.
- Trust me.
They will find out.
The more people know about you,
the more they try to use it against you.
So you would rather we
ignore it than get her help?
We are helping her.
You need to call the pharmacy back.
TURNER: Looks like we're up.
Well, if the Court doesn't kill us,
the asbestos and lead-based paint will.
It looks like they've
made some upgrades.
Well, here we are.
[KNOCKS]
Heh. This is what happens
when you don't call first.
I hate to be that girl,
but unless this door opens,
we are gonna die.
Hey. What's that?
The watches were the
key to finding the Court.
Maybe literally.
Anyone hear me?
Loud and clear.
CARRIE: How about Turner and Duela?
TURNER: We're in.
Uh, what are you doing?
I figure we need to look the part.
DUELA: I'll allow it.
If you want to leave,
I can do this myself.
Then who'd keep you alive? You?
[CLASSICAL MUSIC PLAYING]
[QUIET CONVERSATION]
And I thought my
childhood was messed up.
Don't stare.
How do I not?
Mini-psycho wants to steal
my soul. I can't look away.
[GONG]
Brothers and sisters, I have convened
this parliament in order
to share the wonderful news.
After 100 long years,
the map that the traitor
Alan Wayne hid from us
has finally been found.
[MEMBERS GASP]
Figured there had to
be a reason they wanted
that crappy old painting.
It wasn't a painting at all.
Soon we will have that which
we have sought for so long,
that which we have spent decades
of blood and treasure to find
electrum.
[APPLAUSE]
What the hell is electrum?
And once we have it in our possession,
we will reach heights
those who came before us
dared only dream of.
We will achieve our
greatest triumph of all
mastery over death.
We will no longer suffer
the ravages of time,
and as the world ages all around us,
we will stand impervious to that
which would make us wither and decay.
We shall live forever.
[APPLAUSE]
[DOOR OPENS AND SHUTS]
Caught you red-handed.
Or should I say empty-handed?
Mom, didn't think you'd be up.
Your curfew isn't a suggestion.
I was with Dad at the studio.
You know, people always tell me
that you two are each
other's spitting image.
As a baby, I always
thought you'd take after me,
but you ended up a daddy's girl.
My mother was right.
A man's only true love
will always be his daughter.
You're not supposed to
drink on your medication.
I've been taking this a long time.
I know my limits.
OK. Let's just go to bed, OK?
No. Hey, Stephanie. No.
Don't try to manage me.
Where did you get those?
The pharmacy.
You know what? I take you to
how many fencing tournaments,
and you can't even run
one little errand for
I meant who prescribed them?
- A doctor.
- Oh, God.
This new pain specialist
that I'm seeing
Who treats a prescription
pad like they're sticky notes.
It's medication, sweetie.
Doctor shopping isn't hard
when you've got the cash.
Heh heh heh!
Well, then, thank God for your father.
- It isn't funny.
- You know, I think
if I was doing something wrong,
they would have shut me
up in Blackgate by now.
Have you ever thought
about how it affects me,
having to carry my own mother
out of a parents' luncheon?
People were staring.
They always watch us
and your father.
If it weren't for his career,
you wouldn't even be
able to go to that school.
We owe it to him to
always show our best,
and I can't do that if I am hurting.
Are you even in pain anymore?
I gave birth to you.
Don't you dare talk to me about pain.
S-S-Stephanie!
Ohh! No, no, no!
[POUNDING ON DOOR]
Spoiled little brat!
Mom, please stop!
You need to help me!
[POUNDING]
[POUNDING]
Your father and I do everything for you,
you ungrateful little bitch!
[CLATTERING]
[FOOTSTEPS APPROACH]
You're such a bitch!
[SPLASHING]
[CRYSTAL SCREAMING]
[GLASS BREAKING]
[FLUSH]
[CRYSTAL SHRIEKING]
[DOOR SLAMS]
[SCREAMING]
[SLAM]
HARPER: Electrum.
It's got to be the stuff
Eunice was talking about.
She specifically said
that the Court gave
the Talon a special substance
that increases lifespan.
How is stuff like that even possible?
You can always ask
our 130-year-old Talon
- the next time you see him.
- Great.
So we have a murderous cult that
wants to be murderous forever.
Oh, hold on. I got something.
It's not much, though,
just a blog referencing
a "Gotham Gazette"
article from the twenties.
All right. What does it say?
"A meteorite was
discovered by a scientist
named Dr. Leviticus, who claimed
it had miraculous healing properties.
However, before the
results could be confirmed,
the authorities discovered Leviticus
performing unauthorized
medical procedures
on Gotham's poorest citizens.
Fearing arrest, the
scientist fled the city,
never to be heard from again."
That's it?
Sleuthing the web is not my forte, OK?
Blondie picked a hell
of a day to ghost us.
Wow. What a change.
What do you mean?
Usually, you can't
stand being around her.
She's not untalented.
So you're saying she's useful?
TURNER, ON COMMS: Guys. Guys.
What's going on?
TURNER: New plan.
We're stealing the map.
DUELA: Uh
that's inconvenient.
TURNER: How are we gonna get in there?
It's really a shame
you're not feeling well.
What?
Oof!
What the hell'd you do that for?
Authenticity. Now follow my lead.
[GRUNTS]
Hello. My husband is
really not feeling well,
and I'd really like to get him some air.
Thank you so much.
Come along, darling. Come, come.
[EXHALES]
I can't believe that actually worked.
Eh, sometimes, you just
got to go with the classics.
Ohh. Can't see a thing
in this stupid mask.
You're not supposed to be in here.
At least you'll be able
to fight better without it.
[BOTH GRUNTING]
Unh!
DUELA: Heh heh.
Well, somebody's gonna notice
if we just walk out of
here with this thing.
No, they won't.
This doesn't involve
stabbing me, does it?
Ha ha!
Easy peasy.
Ready to make like our
feathered friends and fly?
Right out the front door.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER]
LEADER: Members of the
Court, on what should be a day
of celebration, I have some
disturbing news to report.
There is a traitor in our midst.
[CRESSIDA GRUNTS]
[MEMBERS GASPING]
[HEAVY BREATHING]
[HEAVY BREATHING]
This doesn't make any sense.
Karma's a bitch.
I say relax and enjoy the show.
We took her off the streets,
gave her a life she could
never have dreamed of,
and how does she repay our kindness?
With disloyalty,
duplicity, and betrayal.
What do you have to say for yourself?
It is true.
You've given me all that
I could have wanted
wealth, power, status,
and in exchange, I lied
I killed
I broke the trust of those
that were most dear to me,
and all it cost me was everything!
But when I discover
what you seek to do now,
the horrors you seek to become,
I suddenly found something
in myself that I lost.
And what is that?
A conscience.
I know I'm irredeemable,
and I accept the consequences,
but you and your Court
are the true monsters.
[BANG BANG]
Enough!
How does the Court find her?
MEMBERS: Guilty! Guilty! Guilty!
And what shall be her punishment?
We kill her.
MEMBERS: Kill her! Kill her! Kill her!
[HEAVY BREATHING]
Hey! What the hell are you doing?
I can't let her die.
Turner, are you are you serious?
She helped murder your father.
She took everything from you.
You don't owe her a damn thing.
Look, we we have the painting.
Let's please just walk out
of here while we still can.
I can't, but you can.
What happened to don't
do anything stupid, huh?
I've never been good
at taking my own advice.
You're really willing to
risk everything to save
someone as awful as her?
My dad would.
Finish it.
[GASPS]
[MEMBERS SCREAMING]
Ohh!
Take the map. Meet back of the truck.
OK.
Who are you?
Hey. Stop!
Unh!
And crap.
- Ugh!
- Unh!
Ha ha! Little Bird.
Please stop calling me that.
Where's Turner?
Turner!
- We have to keep moving.
- Why?
Why would you save my
life and risk your own
after everything I've done?
Because it was the right thing to do,
something you wouldn't
know anything about.
Now, come on.
They should have been back by now.
Maybe we should go in and help.
I I can't just sit
here and do nothing.
It's freaking me out!
[CARRIE PANTING]
Are you guys OK?
CARRIE: Yeah, I think so.
Turner hasn't made it back yet?
CRESSIDA: Turner thank you.
I know I don't deserve
I don't want your gratitude.
I want answers.
I'll tell you what I
can. I owe you that much.
Why does the Court want you dead?
I was going to expose them.
I reached out to Harvey,
but somehow they found me.
Why would you do that?
Because of what I did to your father
to you.
Guilt is a parasite that
will eat at your soul
until there's nothing
left but emptiness.
Is that the only reason?
After the last time I saw you,
I discovered what they
planned to do with electrum.
Turner, if they find it,
they will be a nearly immortal dynasty
that will rule over
Gotham in perpetuity.
They will continue to grow fat
off the city's misery and suffering.
It will never change.
They will never change.
Your father understood that,
which is why he changed his will.
What was in it?
What was it that got him killed?
Your father was going
to give his fortune
to the people of Gotham.
The city's poor would no longer
have to resort to crime to survive.
Crime thrives on poverty.
The Court thrives on crime.
Bruce wanted to break that cycle.
The Court couldn't have that.
Then let's do what he couldn't.
Give me the name of their leader,
and I'll burn the Court to the ground.
- It's not that simple.
- I want a name.
[SLICE]
[GRUNTS]
[THUD]
LEADER: No!
We have plans for this one.
[GASPS]
HARPER: Turner? Turn
[CRUNCH]
Turner? Can you hear me?
Turner!
[STATIC]
[LIGHT BULB BUZZING]
[DOOR CLOSES]
She's asleep.
[SIGHS]
If I ask you to help your mother,
you help her. Understand?
She's out of control, Dad.
You can't just keep letting her run
Yes, I can.
Because you do not make the
decisions in this family.
Your mother and I do.
I don't think she's capable
of making any decisions.
Look at this place.
Who made her do this?
DUELA: OK. We've got to go back.
We don't even know where he is.
OK. Then we find him.
No, no.
It's too dangerous. This
place is swarming with Court.
Going out there now would be suicide.
Really?
All of a sudden, the Gotham Knights are
a bunch of cowards?
I'm sorry. I thought you
all wanted to be heroes.
And you? You're supposed
to be his friend.
- I am.
- They are going to kill him!
- No, they're not.
- How do you know that?
Because if they were, they would have
already done it, Duela!
CULLEN: Duela, you heard that creep.
All right? He needs him for something.
CARRIE: If we go in there half-cocked,
we're all gonna die,
and if that happens, they
get away with all of it.
Everything we've done, everything
Turner's done, all of it for nothing.
OK, so what? We just run away and hide?
No. We regroup,
we make a plan, and we
live to fight another day.
Duela, I swear to you we'll find him.
Take him.
MAN: Greg, move your head.
