Grace (2021) s03e02 Episode Script

Dead Man's Grip

1
SANDY: Am I the love of your life?
Am I, Grace?
[SHE GIGGLES]
You're so boring!
Glenn?
- Hey, morning.
- Life-saver.
- Got an early one.
- No problem, go!
- Dad!
- Hey, you all right?
Breakfast, what do you want?
Eggs, porridge or cereal?
- You know I'm an expert in all three.
- Since when?
Well, since I went
to cooking school.
You did not go to cooking school.
Yes, I did go to cooking school.
Hold on, you calling me a liar?
- Yeah. Yeah!
- What you saying? No, no.
You saying Daddy's a liar?
I'm not a liar! I'm not a liar!
Do it a little bit, not all the way
over it, like that. That's nice.
Right, kids.
Get your stuff, let's go!
[CHILDREN GIGGLE]
- I'll drop 'em off, if you like.
- Would you? That'd be amazing.
Look, Ari,
I just wanted to say that
I'm ready.
To talk
move back in. I don't know,
make a plan to move back in?
OK. Good to know.
[HE SIGHS]
Oh, come on, this is silly.
Look, you said you wanted
your space, and all right, fine,
I ran away to Roy's,
but come on, we can fix this.
I'm just not there yet, Glenn.
That's all I can tell you.
Why is it that I'm being pushed out
and I'm not the one who cheated?
I'm sorry.
[SHE SIGHS]
It's OK.
I'm asking a lot, I know I am.
It's just
something I need.
[CHILDREN LAUGH]
Better get 'em to school.
[DOOR OPENS,
CLOSES]
- Come back to bed.
- Got to see my tutor.
Then I have a lecture.
On what?
Galbraithian challenges
in today's workforce.
- Lucky you.
- Yeah.
Faced with that or a morning
in bed with you, it's a no-brainer.
Oh!
Can you give this to Wesley?
He left it when he came over
the other night.
[DOOR OPENS,
CLOSES]
[DIAL TONE]
Please leave your message
after the tone.
Hey
Thought we didn't have secrets.
Especially one Wesley's in on
and I'm not.
Call me back.
[TRUCK HORN HONKS]
[HORN HONKS,
TYRES SKID]
[CRASH]
[DISTANT SCREAM]
[OVERLAPPING SIRENS]
[SHE COUGHS]
MUFFLED: Are you injured, concussed?
You hurt in any way?
- Er, n-no, I don't think so.
- Have a seat for a moment.
- Just for a moment.
- WOMAN: Interveinal arteries.
- Artery compressions.
- [RADIO BEEPS]
Hi, it's it's Carly.
Yeah, I've been in an accident.
Oh, no, no, I'm fine. I
I just don't know when I'll be in
- WOMAN: Over here!
- OK.
- Pupils fixed and dilated.
- Come on. Over, over, over.
- There's no pulse.
- Right, take over. Compressions.
Right, round to head,
stabilisation, please.
- What? Is he?
- Gary, call stabilisation, please.
Excuse me, madam?
If you wanna head out of the road,
go to the pavement.
I'm PC Dan Paxton.
Because you've been involved
in a road traffic collision,
I need to take a breath specimen.
So if you could blow
into this mouth piece here.
Give me a nice big blow.
- [BREATHALYSER BEEPS]
- That's great, perfect, thank you.
I'm afraid to tell you
you've failed the test.
Carly Chase, I'm arresting you
on suspicion of driving
while under the influence
of alcohol.
You were up early.
Yeah, Ari had an eight o'clock, so
I said I'd run the kids to school.
- OK, well, that sounds promising.
- Yeah, I hope so.
Superintendent Grace
at a humble hit-and-run.
What is the world coming to?
Yeah, witnesses are talking about
a blue pick-up truck
fleeing the scene
- I'll hear it from DC Nicholl, thank you.
- Ah.
I'm over here
when you're ready to talk.
Is it the familiar tone
or the absolute refusal
to take a hint?
Winning blend of the two?
Nick, I understand
it might be deliberate?
Yeah, possibly.
Victim is an Anthony Robinson,
according to a Beacon University
ID card found in his bag.
What about this blue pick-up?
So, it's knocked our cyclist
into the path of a lorry
and then drove off at speed.
Where does the grey Golf fit in?
TBC, but the driver, Carly Chase,
just failed a breath test.
We need to trace this pick-up
as a priority.
I want all CCTV pulled
from local businesses and shops
before it's wiped, OK?
Yes, boss.
- Is that from the pick-up?
- Serial number should tell us.
But it's only attached
with a bit of glue and wire.
Could help us trace the pick-up.
Norman, Bella.
Found something else
inside the deceased's backpack.
Right, I'm guessing
they're not paracetamol.
Probably not, but if this
is foul play, that could be motive.
Bleak House.
I might've finished it
if I had that version.
DRIVER:
They just came out of nowhere!
- Lorry driver?
- Yeah, er, Roger Ferguson.
He's passed a breath test.
He just didn't have time
to brake or dodge the cyclist.
Go and see if he's OK.
Erm, maybe get him to run through
what happened again,
if he's up to it.
- Uncanny.
- What?
Spinella.
He practically beat us to it today.
Yeah. Just like Bishop's house.
And Sophie Carrington's, remember?
He was there
before the cordon went up.
How's he doing it?
Has he got an inside man? A mole?
You are giving him
way too much credit.
Then how?
KNOCK ON DOOR
I appreciate that talking
to two complete strangers
is probably the last thing
you wanna be doing right now.
So we can wait,
or if you have a mate
you would like to call
that could come over, that's OK.
Me and Tony, we just sort of lived
in each other's pockets, so
I think I've driven
all my mates away.
Do you mind telling me
how you and Tony met?
We met in New York,
in Washington Square.
- Where they play chess?
- Yeah.
Yeah, where they play chess.
Erm
I was on my summer holiday
after my first year,
and Tony had just done
his first year at Harvard.
- So he dropped out to come here?
- Yeah.
His parents went nuts, but
that was Tony.
Once he made his mind up Sorry.
No, please, look,
I'm sorry that we have to ask you
these questions.
Laura?
At some point, we're going to need
somebody to identify Tony's body.
If you're not up to it, that's OK.
I think Tony's parents should do it.
We found something
in Tony's backpack
that we need to talk to you about.
Was Tony dealing?
Bit of ecstasy around campus?
Low-level stuff, maybe?
Are you
You're sure that's Tony's?
You said that there were
other vehicles involved.
Pretty sure. It was in his backpack.
In intent-to-supply quantities.
So you're gonna make it
all about that now?
No, we're not.
The only reason
I'd be interested in the drugs
is if they had a bearing
on Tony's death.
Well, how could they?
The pick-up truck that flipped Tony
under the wheels of the artic
fled the scene.
So right now, we can't rule out
the possibility
that this was murder,
not an accident.
OK. Thanks, Nick.
So, you uttered the grand total
of 12 words in there?
- Ari?
- [HE SIGHS]
At this point, all I can think is,
what is the problem?
You know, what's the hitch?
- So ask her.
- I did.
She says she doesn't know.
Just something that she needs.
Maybe she's just fallen out of love.
You two are gonna work through this,
I know you are.
So, what did you make of Laura?
She's, er
Well, she's devastated, obviously.
ROY: I think she's scared.
TONY: Hey.
Thought we didn't have secrets.
Especially one Wesley's in on
and I'm not.
Call me back.
[DOOR OPENS]
- Is my solicitor here yet?
- No, not yet.
Sit down, please.
Carly Chase,
I'm re-arresting you on suspicion
of causing death while driving
under the influence of alcohol.
- He's
- I'm afraid so.
[SHE EXHALES]
I crashed to avoid him.
The cyclist. I mean, he
He was on the wrong side
of the road.
You'd best save that
for your interview.
James.
Carly.
Let's see if we can
sort this mess out, shall we?
The inquiry into the hit-and-run
death of Tony Robinson
has been named Operation Violin.
Glenn will be serving as
Deputy Senior Investigating Officer.
Nick, could you run us through
the highlights
of the witness statements, please?
OK, so, seems like
Tony turned into the street
on the wrong side of the road,
causing the silver Golf
to swerve into the taxi office.
Tony was then hit
by the blue pick-up,
which had just run through
a red light.
He was then flipped across the road,
right under the wheels of the artic.
So, what about the driver
of the grey Golf?
Carly Chase. In custody,
having failed a second breath test.
So the driver of the pick-up
probably fled the scene
for obvious reasons -
stolen vehicle, no insurance,
worried about being breathalysed,
could've been carrying something
incriminating.
- Probably, but not certainly?
- Yeah, well
Glenn.
Yeah. There's a detail of, as yet,
unknown significance
that we need to factor in.
Tony was carrying
intent-to-supply quantities
of what we now know to be ecstasy.
So if he was dealing,
even just on student campus,
and pissed someone off,
that could be motive.
So until we know different,
we're treating this as murder.
Nick, can you head down to the uni,
find out if he was dealing?
And if so, to who?
Yeah, and anything on his supplier
would be good, too.
And I've been on the phone
to the NYPD.
They've informed his parents,
Pat and Fernanda Robinson,
of their son's death.
What do we know about them,
the parents?
Just that Pat Robinson
is a Wall Street accountant.
Runs one of the city's biggest firms
on the Upper East Side.
OK. And what about the driver
of the artic?
Erm Ferguson?
It wasn't just the crash
eating him -
he's in bother on his driver hours.
- He was over?
- Well over.
Says his refrigeration unit
was on the blink,
and he was carrying
perishable seafood.
OK. But there's no indication
that fatigue
might've influenced his actions,
then?
Witnesses agree he didn't have time
to brake, and CCTV supports that.
Then he's not our primary lead.
Our priority is to find the driver
of that pick-up
because at the very least,
he's facing a manslaughter charge.
Guys, we've just got our first
screen grab of the blue pick-up.
Who are you?
Nadiuska has completed
the postmortem
on a previously healthy
21-year-old American national,
provisionally identified
as Tony Robinson.
We found some blue paint transfer
on the right shoulder of his jacket,
probably where
the pick-up struck him.
That transfer is consistent with
an abrasion to the right shoulder.
I found evidence
of severe and widespread trauma
consistent with
multiple internal injuries.
And that was cause of death?
I'm confident it was, yeah.
I've sent off blood and other
fluid samples for drug testing.
There's something else
you should see.
- Is that what I think it is?
- A bullet wound.
Long healed.
Discoloration suggests it was
sustained ten years ago minimum.
He was lucky he wasn't paralysed.
Well, his luck ran out.
Are you sure you wanna get rid?
You could get a grand, at least.
OK.
[PHONE VIBRATES]
Happy birthday to you ♪
[PHONE VIBRATES]
Norman?
Right, the prints off the wing
mirror belong to a Jason Charles.
- The driver of the pick-up?
- No, Charles is Black.
But his convictions for car crime
and his recent release
from Eastville prison
point to him knowing the driver.
Good work. Check it out.
Yeah, his parole sheet also says
he's working at a Charles Mechanics?
I reckon he fitted that mirror.
Malcolm Charles?
- Yeah.
- East Sussex CID.
We're looking for Jason Charles?
What's he supposed to have done now?
Well, that's between us and him,
isn't it?
- Jason
- Oi!
Brats.
Jason! Don't be daft!
Let's go back inside.
Oi, Malcom.
- You didn't get him, then?
- No, we didn't get him.
You want a drink of water?
- You want to get done for obstruction?
- OK, OK.
Help us out, Malcolm.
It's in your interest and Jason's.
I told him I don't want him
doing any work,
- paid or unpaid, on his mates' cars.
- But?
It was Monday or Tuesday.
He said he'd lock up
cos he had to finish a job.
Oi. That work?
That's the pick-up truck.
OK, you take a good look around
for me
Ewan Preece.
Preece is a 31-year-old dealer
serving the last three weeks
of a six-year sentence
for drug offences.
So he's on day release,
presumably?
From Eastville Prison.
Now, he was supposed to be
on a construction site in Arundel
this morning, learning
the finer points of bricklaying,
but he didn't show.
Due back for lock-in, then,
presumably?
Yeah, in half an hour.
Call the prison.
If he's even a minute late,
I wanna hear about it.
Yeah. Look, boss
Probably best to mention
that I know Preece of old.
I nicked him for joyriding
a while back,
tried to get him
on the straight and narrow.
Ended up making a bit of a prat
of myself in the process.
- Hard to believe, I know.
- Very hard to believe, Norman (!)
But I got him a job
at my uncle's lumber yard.
Two days in,
he's got his hand in the till
and a power drill down his pants.
Sounds like he's graduated
to more serious stuff.
Yeah.
Boss, Preece was no angel.
But killing a teenager?
I can't see him sinking that low.
People change, Norman.
Usually not for the better.
[CAR STARTS]
There's a cheerful thought (!)
Plus, he's been in Eastville.
Who knows what kind of mentors
he met in there?
We suspect Tony was dealing.
And the man
who knocked him off his bike
has form in that department.
His name is Ewan Preece.
Have you seen him before, Laura?
Is it a name you might recognise?
Somebody Tony
might've talked about, maybe?
Look, if you're holding back
because you're scared
I understand, I really do.
But if you want justice for Tony,
we need to know what you know.
As in everything.
[SHE SNIFFS]
I just
I don't know
what you want me to say.
Look, we've spoken to Tony's tutor.
She was very surprised to hear
that he was involved in dealing.
Are you sure
you don't recognise him, Laura?
Yeah. I'm sure.
This is my card.
Call me anytime
if you want to talk
or if you feel scared.
Anything, OK?
Thank you.
[DOOR OPENS,
CLOSES]
Laid it on a bit thick in there.
- Think so?
- Yeah, I mean
maybe she doesn't know anything.
Glenn, if you think
she doesn't know anything,
then maybe you shouldn't be sitting
your inspector's exam.
Nice (!)
Well, go on, then, genius.
What do you think she's hiding?
I don't know.
Copper's nose.
I've just got a feeling.
Ah, so now you've got a feeling.
There is something we're not seeing.
[PHONE VIBRATES]
Norman?
Boss, Ewan Preece -
he didn't make it back for lock-in.
- What's for dinner?
- Shepherd's pie.
One of your favourites, isn't it?
Oh, can you remind me
to book a taxi to take you
to school tomorrow morning?
Ethan?
Book a taxi
to take me to school tomorrow.
Oh, ha-ha (!)
I could walk.
- You'll never get up in time.
- I could bike.
Lucas and Charlie bike,
and they live further away.
No. No way.
You are not biking to school.
Look
I've had a shit day.
- OK?
- Not as shit as that cyclist.
Ethan! What?
Forget it.
Norman,
anything on Preece's location?
Yeah, his last known address
before he got sent down
is under surveillance -
house he shared with his sister.
Good. Glenn, can you head
down there, supervise?
Yeah, sure.
Now, I had a chat with the governor
from Eastville.
Apparently, Preece shared a cell
with a Warren Tucker
until last year.
- Warren Tucker, I know that name.
- Heavy-duty villain.
Flooded coke into Brighton
in the noughties.
Doing life for double murder.
So Tucker and Preece were close?
As two coats of paint.
Governor split 'em up,
fearing Tucker's "undue influence".
What else have we got on Tucker?
He's a reputation for two things -
extreme violence
and schooling his younger employees
in the art of conducting business.
So, how much education
did Ewan enjoy
before the governor split them up?
Well, maybe you're right, boss.
Maybe Preece has changed
and he's not the harmless moron
that I remember.
We exercise extreme caution
when apprehending Preece.
- Please convey that to the team.
- Sure.
VOICEMAIL: Please leave
your message after the tone.
- [BEEP]
- Jason
It's me.
Forget your loyalty to Preece.
If you don't turn yourself in,
I'm coming over there myself.
Yeah. Later.
ROY: The parents are flying over
to view the body.
CLEO: Yeah.
I volunteered for the welcome party.
Great. Good, good.
You can calm the waters.
Do you think they'll be tricky?
Wealthy, Wall Street types
They're probably gonna want answers.
And until we find Preece,
I'm not sure we can give them any.
Speaking of which
Will you leave
that bloody thing alone?
Sorry.
I'm just checking surveillance.
Oh, yeah, I'm still waiting
on tox for Tony Robinson.
[HE SIGHS]
Sorry about the change of venue.
I just want it to be
Locked and loaded?
- Ready.
- [THEY CHUCKLE]
- Beautiful.
- [SHE CHUCKLES]
- Happy anniversary.
- Happy anniversary.
There's no going back now.
What do you mean?
Work is off limits
for the rest of the night.
- WHISPERS: That is fine by me.
- Liar!
I've been thinking about
speeding things up a bit.
We don't know how fast
either of us will sell our places
Well, the agents say
it's a seller's market.
Oh, they always say that.
And then
there's buying a new place
What are you suggesting?
Move in with me for a bit.
Call it a trial period.
What do you think?
Tomorrow?
What?
I'll pack a suitcase tonight,
and I'll move in tomorrow.
- What about Glenn?
- He'll be fine.
He'll have the run of the place.
He'll love it.
Tomorrow? Why?
Because I don't wanna make
the same mistake twice.
Roy
I don't care what house,
flat, bed we're in.
I just wanna see you when I wake up
in the morning. That's it.
- [PHONE VIBRATES]
- Take it.
Glenn.
You'd better check
the Argus website.
Spinella's outdone himself.
You just couldn't help it,
could you?
Thought you were supposed
to be with Cleo?
I was.
I'm not trying to undermine you,
Glenn.
I'm just checking in, that's all.
Everything all right?
Yeah.
It's just this Spinella thing.
How did he get to the mechanics'
while Norman and Bella
were still there?
[GLENN SIGHS]
Dunno.
Bring him in? Sweat him?
With what?
He'll just say it was
his keen journalistic instincts.
RADIO: All units,
all units from OP-six, be aware.
We have an incoming on foot,
Marion Gardens
towards Maythorpe Road.
Cap's a match for the one
he was wearing at the garage.
OK, incoming is believed to be
the suspect, but no positive ID.
Now heading for the target house.
Come on, what's the plan, boss?
Look, do we take him now,
or do we wait till he's inside?
Take him. Repeat, take him.
- Armed police! Show me your hands!
- Police!
Hands! Hands!
Hands! Down, down!
Get your hands on the floor, Preece!
Put your hands down on the floor!
Preece! You're under arrest.
He put you up to this, didn't he?
To flush us out,
see if we were watching you?
What?
I'm just walking home.
Wearing your brother's clothes?
- What's going on?
- Evie.
Norman.
Where is he, Evie? Where's Ewan?
Just save us all a lot of bother
and tell us.
I don't know.
I don't!
Get her out of here.
Well, if this is Preece
trying to flush us out
he's picked the right spot.
Local police called
to a scene in Kemptown.
It's Malcolm Charles.
Gunshot wounds to the right arm
and to the head.
Powder burn on the skin.
Up close and personal.
Professional, certainly.
They clearly knew
what they were doing.
Poor sod.
I feel bad at shouting at him now.
Ballistics?
Entry wound above the ear,
slightly lower exit wound,
giving us a downward trajectory.
No bullet inside.
Looks like he dug it out
and took it with him.
Very professional.
Which fits with the chest wounds.
Neat, precise
- Is that salt?
- Yes.
Looks like he was tortured.
There's two reasons
you torture someone -
you're a sadist,
or you want information.
I know they're not
mutually exclusive, but
what are we looking at,
if you had to pick?
The latter one, I'd say.
Given the neat, incremental wounds,
plus he took the trouble
to bring the salt to the scene.
Why would someone
torture Malcolm Charles?
No record,
no history of criminality.
Unlike his nephew, Jason.
Preece hears about Jason
doing a runner,
decides to get to him before us.
Malcolm refuses to give him up,
so
Well, why?
Why would Preece go after Jason?
Shut him up.
- About what?
- Location, plans
things they might have divulged
when they were inside.
But if he did send Tony
under the truck,
why isn't he lying low?
I don't know.
But right now, he's the only person
linking Malcolm Charles
to Tony Robinson.
And if you're right
we need to find Jason
before Preece does.
Come on, Norman, you've nicked him.
Where do we start?
Well, Warren Tucker, I suppose.
Ethan?
I don't wanna make another one.
- Another?
- Memory box.
What if you get into another crash?
What if you're not so lucky
next time?
I've got bad news for you, mate.
I'm not going anywhere.
You will never get rid of me.
Now, just do me a favour, yeah?
Keep your tracking app on
when you go out, OK?
Sure, Mum.
Would you like to follow me?
Mr and Mrs Robinson.
- Cleo Morey.
- Good afternoon.
I'm so sorry for your loss.
And having to travel so far
to be here.
- I think you're both very brave.
- Thank you.
This way.
Can I offer you a tea or a coffee?
No, thank you.
Thank you again
for making the journey here.
DS Moy and I are here to offer
as much illumination as we can
or try and answer
any questions you might have
about the circumstances
of Tony's tragic death.
I'm afraid your son suffered
serious abrasions in the accident.
I would recommend you look at Tony
through the viewing window.
I want to see him.
To hold him.
Hug him.
He's cold in there.
Yes, of course.
But please be prepared.
SHE SOBS
It's OK, I'm here now.
I'm here.
I'm here.
Tell us about the accident.
There were three vehicles involved.
- Witness reports indicate
- We know that.
What we wanna hear is your progress.
Any news on the pick-up driver?
What about the trucker?
The driver of the pick-up
has not yet been found.
But our efforts are ongoing.
We will find him.
I I'm sorry
I'm just
trying to make sense of it all.
Of course.
And as soon as we have
any more information,
we'll let you know.
Thank you.
I'm sorry.
There's a designated area outside
if you'd like to smoke.
Sure thing.
Ethan!
You've got dentist on Thursday.
[DOG BARKS DISTANTLY]
Oh, get a grip, Carly.
MAN: Mr Jones
to the governor's office.
- Mr Jones to the governor's office.
- [DOOR BUZZES]
[HE GRUNTS]
[PANTS HEAVILY]
Evening, Warren.
- DS Norman Potting.
- [WARREN GRUNTS]
It's about Ewan.
You're well acquainted, aren't you?
[WARREN SIGHS]
Look, he didn't make it back
for lock-in.
- He might be in some bother.
- [WARREN SIGHS]
Mr Sebden, can you make your way
to viewing, please?
You know, me and you
have got something in common.
[WARREN SCOFFS]
Yeah.
You know, we both tried to help him.
Steer him.
More fool us, eh?
UNDER HIS BREATH: Yeah.
How about
we give him another chance?
D'you know what sunk costs are?
An investment
that's already been made
and can't be recovered.
When I was in business,
I knew loads of people
just didn't get that.
They're thinking
if they've lost a million,
well, they might as well blow
two or three.
Hang in there. See it through.
- But not you?
- Nah, not me.
I got a buzz
out of cutting my losses.
Walking away and never looking back.
No matter how much I put in,
how much I lost.
The more, the merrier.
Do you understand?
Ewan Preece is a sunk cost?
First day of his parole,
he got shitfaced in the Bull
when he should've been on site
in Arundel.
He smashed his mirror
in a pub car park
and got it fixed, hoping
that I wouldn't hear about it.
I mean
[HE SCOFFS]
- Vain hope?
- It was the deception I didn't like.
You're very well informed, Warren.
Preece is beyond help.
Right, so you don't believe
in second chances?
That was his second chance.
[DOOR OPENS,
CLOSES]
ROY: How d'you feel
about your brother getting out?
I feel great about it.
- You're close?
- Yeah.
Not as close as you were, though?
Six years apart'll do that.
What about Warren Tucker?
Did he come between you?
Looked after Ewan. He was a mate.
Got him to do some A-levels.
Right.
Malcolm Charles.
[SHE SCOFFS]
If you're saying Ewan did this
It's just There's no way.
Right, then help us find him.
Eliminate him.
I don't know where he is, I swear.
You seemed frightened, Evie.
I've waited a long time
for him to get out.
Is it fair to say that prison
has changed Ewan?
How much of that is down to
Tucker's influence, do you think?
Tucker's son was a junkie,
killed himself.
He saw Ewan as,
I dunno, a surrogate?
Second chance?
Ewan was working
at a construction firm
as part of his day release.
He pranged their pick-up truck
on his first day, but he was
more scared of Tucker's reaction
than the governor's.
- Why was he scared?
- Mm
Had a few at lunchtime with a mate,
and the truck was company-use only.
Enough to nix his day release?
So he got Jason to fix the mirror,
no questions asked.
That's it.
No, that's not "it", Evie.
He put Tony Robinson
under the wheels of a truck.
We just don't know why.
[SHE WHIMPERS]
When did you last see him?
OK, yeah.
He let himself in this afternoon.
I was at work.
And you didn't see him?
No. I did in the park.
He gave me his clothes to wear.
S-Said he needed to know
if it was safe
to stay a night at mine
before he got out.
So not only
did he callously use you,
he asked you to lie to us,
albeit by omission.
That is a serious offence, Evie.
How could you believe

About the pick-up truck?
About what he has or hasn't done?
About anything, really?
Don't know.

[PANICKED BREATHING]
Thank you for calling.
Yes, I'm outside the front now.
I'll see you in a minute.
DSI Grace! How goes it?
Any leads on Ewan Preece?
How'd you know about Preece?
Well put two and two together.
- "Two and two"?
- Hm.
Care to elucidate?
Sure.
Your lot made a big noise outside
his sister's place yesterday,
and my man in Eastville says
that Ewan skipped lock-up.
Ergo, he's your hit-and-run driver.
But did he kill Malcolm Charles?
What were you doing
outside that mechanics'?
Answering a question with a question
is very Messianic.
And before you say "coincidence"
or "anonymous source"
or some other bullshit, know this -
your piece got Malcolm killed,
and now Jason has gone underground,
and our best chance
of finding Preece has gone with him.
What were you doing
outside the mechanics'?
My job - following a lead.
You should try it.
Ooh, careful.
You might do something you regret.
Hit me, for example.
That's a bad example.
OK. Look, my man at Eastville says
that Ewan and Jason
were cell-mates.
The mechanics' is down
on Jason's parole sheet
as his place of work.
Happy?
We hadn't identified Preece
as a suspect then.
So unless you had
and weren't sharing,
which is obstruction, in my book,
no, I'm not happy.
I know you're getting help, Kevin.
I just don't know how.
Who.
Sorry, you've lost me.
Oh, come on.
All these scoops, exclusives.
It's not because you're the
Carl Bernstein of Brighton, is it?
I don't know who that is.
[HE CLEARS HIS THROAT]
That figures.
Well, thanks, Superintendent.
It's always a pleasure (!)
If you so much
as mention Preece's name -
in print, online, wherever -

Ethan to school or get to work?
- [KNOCK ON DOOR]
- Just give me a minute, please?
- Everything OK?
- Yeah. Sorry.
Ready for the address
for the magistrates'?
Er
Yep, ready.
Whatever it takes,
we have to find Ewan Preece today.
Where did he go
when he left his sister's?
Where'd he stash the pick-up?
We know he was in touch
with Jason from Eastville.
We do, but Jason's AWOL -
not a sniff.
OK, so who else? Check his
cell-mates, but don't stop there.
Who else was he close to
apart from Warren Tucker?
Who were his regular visitors?
Yeah, I paid Warren Tucker
a visit last night.
He's not gonna help.
Why not? His boy's in trouble?
He says Ewan is a "sunk cost".
Claims he's written him off.
Wow that's cold.
- Yeah, if we buy it.
- I'm not sure you do.
OK, well, regardless of that,
they were kept apart
before Ewan's release,
so he had to make new pals
on the cell block - who were they?
Let's not forget his mates
before he went down.
He's got a long record.
I doubt he was offending on his own.
Nah. He wasn't. No, I know these boys
he used to knock about with.
I mean, "boys" - men now.
Well, let's pay them a visit.
And his family.
Oh, he hasn't got any family,
has he? Just the sister.
Oh, and by the way, we need to keep
looking over our shoulders.
Spinella?
I caught him today in the company
of Tony Robinson's father.
Ah, we can expect
some headlines, then?
"Victim's parents say police
are dragging their feet".
I think he's planning
more than that.
You give him too much credit.
- That's exactly what I said.
- Yes, you did.
And then he turned up
outside Jason Charles's front door.
We must not underestimate Spinella.
HE GASPS
Roger Ferguson - the lorry driver
who ran Tony over.
And that's Jason -
last seen outrunning Norman and I
on Kemptown Road.
Well, we got him in the end, eh?
Feels like a million years ago.
Preece is still the common thread.
He knew Jason from Eastville
and got him to fix his wing mirror.
We're still missing a why.
Even if Preece targeted Tony
over some drug deal
why kill Ferguson?
Also, why stick around in Brighton?
Why put the bodies on display,
put them where they'll be found,
when you're wanted
for a hit-and-run?
Something's off.
Three murders. Three victims.
All of whom
we can link to your brother.
Where is he, Evie?
I just don't believe you when
you say you haven't got an inkling.
Hasn't been easy between you two,
has it?
We checked Ewan's visitation log
at Eastville.
You were a weekly fixture
for five years,
but since Christmas
not one visit.
Had a falling-out.
I was so looking forward
to him coming home, moving back in.
We were in foster care together,
and
suddenly, he had other plans.
OK.
Tucker sorted him a place.
Ewan said it was near the harbour.
That's all I know.
OK, we're gonna pause it there
for a few minutes.
Excuse us, Evie.
[DOOR OPENS]
So, the harbour
Check Tucker's assets,
any recent purchases
by close family members.
Also, a targeted ANPR
around the harbour
for Preece's pick-up truck.
We're close, Glenn. We're close.
Roy?
Cameras caught a blue pick-up
on Harbour Road
bearing various hallmarks
of Preece's truck.
- Where did he end up?
- We don't know.
Footage shows the pick-up entering
the harbour via the east entrance.
And after that, nothing -
trail goes cold.
- Get on to the harbour.
- Foursquare search?
And whenever the next sonar sweep
is due, bring it forward.
BELLA: It's Preece's pick-up.
Yeah, that's Ewan.
It's Ewan Preece.
CLEO: Doesn't look like
he made much effort to get away.
Suicide?
[SHE SIGHS]
Dead man's grip.

But not so fast
he couldn't let go of the wheel.
- [SHE SIGHS]
- What is it?
His hands have been glued
to the wheel.
Christ!
They say that drowning's
one of the worst ways to go.
So he was tortured, basically.
Malcolm Charles mark two.
Not quite. You asked me
if I thought Malcolm was tortured
for information or pure sadism.
I said the former.
But this looks like the latter?
The level of theatricality,
the preparation required,
the risks involved
feels personal.
OK, so what're we looking at?
A cold-blooded killer
devolving into a psycho?
Or the change
speaks to the victimology.
From their injuries, I'd say Malcolm
and Jason aren't primary victims -
they were just a means to an end
to find Preece.
OK, so if not Preece, then who?
Who killed four people
without leaving a witness
or a single forensic trace?
Tucker?
We can't rule him out,
but we have to step back now.
Right back.
OK, in the light of Preece's death
it seems unlikely
that he meant to send Tony
under the wheels of the truck,
so we have an accidental death
that seems to have been a catalyst
for four murders.
We can't be sure about that.
No, but if all four murders
link back to Tony,
we have to ask ourselves why?
What is it about him?
Your investigation has been slow,
reactive and achieved
the square root of sod all -
something thrown into sharp relief
by the death of your prime suspect.
Turns out Preece is a victim -
indeed the victim
who's been made to suffer the most.
It would seem so, yes, sir.
You've wasted a day, and now
there's this to contend with.
Read the terms and conditions.

Talk about paraffin on the flames.
This is Spinella all over.
Not that you're obsessed with him
at all (!)
He has someone
in East Sussex Police.
Every crime scene, he's there
straight after us, sometimes
Enough!
Stop fixating on Spinella,
and I suggest
you find a new, viable suspect
so we can reassure people that
we have a clue what we're doing.
Yes, sir.
This is a very challenging
and fast-moving case.
If this was the Met,
you and I both know
that we would have 50 bodies
on this.
As it is, my team worked until dawn
and were back in at 8am
for a briefing,
and they will do the same tonight
and tomorrow night
and for however long it takes
until we catch this man.
What's your point?
Your loyalty is appreciated.
The National Crime Agency

to offer their help and expertise.
I thanked them sincerely and
told them we had the job in hand.
How's that for loyalty?

This man is American, and obviously,
the Robinsons are American.
I mean, it would be remiss of us not

have means and motive.
Remember Laura Cadman's reaction
when we suggested that
she might have to ID Tony's body?
Yeah, she was she was worried.
She was scared.
And what was Pat Robinson
doing with Spinella?
Listen to the wording here
"£100,000 for information

of the suspect."
Not "leading to the arrest
and conviction",
"leading to the identity".
They're straying
into vigilante territory.

on the suspect's identity, that's
aggressive, it's revealing.
Pat Robinson is
is just an accountant.

What is it about his parents, Laura?
Why are you so scared of them?
So
Tony's mother,
her real name is Giordino.
Her father is Sal Giordino -
head of the most powerful
crime family on the East Coast.
Does that have anything to do
with the bullet wound, the scar?
Yeah. He was ten.
