Greenleaf (2016) s02e16 Episode Script

The Pearl

1 GRACE: Previously on Greenleaf - Hello? - Hey, baby.
- Where are you? - It's better if you don't know where I'm at.
I'm never gonna see you again, am I? - Just tell me you love me.
- I love you.
Baby, when it comes to the Greenleafs, make 'em pay.
I just want you to know that I'm here to do whatever I can do to make your job easier.
That's why I stayed on.
That's great.
Tamela Mann asked me to sing backup for her on her national tour.
- Seriously? - Yes, Jabari just called to tell me.
I can't make one move without this one shading me.
I just think it's really remarkable how everything is always about you.
- Isaiah.
- Get off of me! - [thuds] - Ow! I promise you I will never do this again.
'Cause I love you.
I'm so glad that God decided to put you in my life.
And thank you for being open to letting Him do that.
I know you had an affair with Lionel.
I used passion to fill the pit of pain you left in me with what you did with my sister.
That was a onetime thing.
[music playing] Sometimes It feels cold And you feel all alone Better days are coming You've seen good, you've seen bad You've been happy and sad But just remember That better days Better days are coming Whoa, better days Better days - I see it - Better days - I feel it - Better days Yes, they are coming Sorry to keep you waiting.

Let's do this.
It's only a season - All of them? - All of them.

- Thank you.

- Yes, Ms.
Greenleaf? - I wanted - Uh, I have my fitting at 11:00 and then me and Roberto are going to Burke's - for the book signing.
- Great, good.
- Okay.
- Bye.
Have fun.
SOPHIA: Thanks.
Now, where are you going with these suits? - The guest suite.
- [chuckles] Why? Bishop told me to move all of his clothes out the master bedroom.
ZORA AND SOPHIA: Oh! It was a double-strand, but I had it separated so the two of you could share.
Thank you, Grandma.
[scoffs] Yes, thank you.
It's beautiful.
- Mm.
- [Sophia chuckles] Do you girls know how a pearl is formed? A parasite gets in, right? That's right, smart girl.
[chuckles] Yes, the parasite creeps into the oyster, and then the oyster responds by covering that old, invasive little thing with this substance called nacre.
And eventually, it turns what was painful and out of place into something beautiful.
There is no mistake that the Bible likens the kingdom of Heaven to a pearl of great price.
And you're perfect pearls.
Both of you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
They're beautiful.
- Oh.
- [horn honking] Um, I gotta go.
Mm, I love you.
[horn honking] Is something off with the two of you? No, not too much.
I just I don't love her boyfriend.
- I know.
- [chuckles] Anybody who beeps like that and doesn't come in can't have much to recommend him.
Can he? Oh, I don't so, but You can't tell a person anything.
A heart wants what it wants, and it does not care.
Selena Gomez? - Emily Dickinson.
- [both laughing] Right.
[sighs] She'll figure it out.
Give her time.
And I want those flowers to get there bright and early tomorrow morning so that Charity knows that we're thinking about her.
Family should always be in support of those landmark moments.
- Mm-hmm.
- Ooh! That's a good tweet.
Hashtag - Family first.
- I love it.
- Yes.
- Yeah.
Will you do that for me? - Okay.
- [phone ringing] - [beeps] - Hello? I heard you're looking for me.
It's Mavis.
Well, I know.
- I'm just surprised.
- So, what's up? Well, I was going through Mac's belongings, looking for Mama's pearls to give to the girls.
Yeah? Well, I hope that's okay with you that I did that.
- I separated the strands.
- I don't care.
The cotillion's tonight, by the way.
What is this about my club? Well, Mavis, I don't pretend to understand these things, and as you know we don't have a lawyer since since Mac.
Mae, what is it about my club? I think you still own it.
Kevin is here.
[footsteps approaching] What are you doing here? [clears throat] Looking for Charity.
- She's out of town.
- Doing what? - She's touring, singing.
- And she took Nathan with her? Yes.
She made arrangements for his care.
She was very responsible.
Now, Kevin, why are you here? I came to apologize.
Oh, well, that sounds about right, given everything that you put her through, put all of us through.
I know.
I'm not here to make any excuses.
[sighs] I was wrong to leave like that.
And stay away and not respond? I know, and I'm sorry.
I was having difficulty accepting who I am and what I'd done.
With good reason.
But I can now.
I'm ready to be a father again.
[laughs] Where are they? You ran out of here like a little child.
You don't get to march back in here and make demands.
So, I will let her know, and I'm sure she will contact you when she's ready.
He's my son, and I have rights.
Well, I would love to see you fight for them in court so that everything could be brought out about what you did to create this mess.
But he's still my son.
All right, Kevin.
I will share with Charity that we spoke.
Oh, and, uh, Maricel will let you out.
Maricel, have them bring Kevin's car around, please.
- [sighs] - [phone beeping] [ringing] AARON: How'd it go? Just like I thought it would.
You know I'm here for you, Kevin.
I'm gonna need your help.
- [camera clicking] - [music playing] All right, very nice.
Next Greenleaf group.
- Oh.
- Okay.
For posterity.
Wonderful! - Absolutely.
- Darius.
- [laughing] Come on.
- [Zora chuckles] Perfect.
- You look great, babe.
- Thanks.
Kind of fun, huh? Yeah, nice, clean family fun.
Hey, but I got a limo for us after this.
Mm, that's a no-go.
What? But I got a limo.
Yeah, but just for me, I mean.
I can't.
Why? I'll tell you later.
How about just the grandparents? All right, darling.
Let me just let me just focus in here.
You make a public spectacle of yourself moving your clothes 50 feet down the hall, smile like nothing happened? That's right.
- Unbelievable.
- Isn't it? PHOTOGRAPHER: All right, there you go.
Hold it right there.
All right, perfect.
- GRACE: Hey.
- JACOB: Hey.
Uh, you clocking this? - What? - Mama and Daddy.
- [quiet arguing] - Uh, no.
Why? What's going on? He moved out of their room into your old suite.
- Is this something they do? - JACOB: Nah.
I mean, they've had their little fights over the years, but he's never moved out of the room.
Do you think we should do something about it? - I don't know what is there to do.
- Jacob.
JACOB: I mean, look, they're fine.
It'll pass.
- Hey.
How are you? - Just try to enjoy the night.
All right? Have some fun.
- Come on, life's too short.
- MAE: What? JAMES: Mae, let it go.
I don't want to talk about it anymore.
You know I have sustained [argument continues indistinctly] [music playing] JACINTA: Our next St.
Josephine's Society debutante is Sophia Greenleaf.
This evening, Sophia is being presented by her grandfather, Bishop James Greenleaf.
Sophia's a rising senior at Excellence Academy where she maintains a weighted GPA of 4.
Sophia is a member of Calvary Fellowship, where she is active in the music ministry and Christian Education department.
She is the daughter of Ray Fisher and Grace Greenleaf.
Our next St.
Josephine Society debutante is Zora Greenleaf.
This evening, Zora is being presented by her father, Pastor Jacob Greenleaf.
Zora is a rising senior at Excellence Academy where she maintains a weighted GPA average of 4.
- [crowd murmurs] - Zora is a member of Triumph Church where she is active in the youth and audiovisual ministries.
She is the daughter of Jacob and Kerissa Greenleaf.
Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you this year's St.
Josephine Society debutantes.
[music playing] Three little words Oh, what I'd give for that wonderful phrase To hear those three little words Aren't they all so elegant? [sighs] It is quite a show, isn't it? Mm-hmm.
And what I feel in my heart Like a page in Southern Decor.
[chuckles] First Lady, I am so sorry about all the drama we got into over this.
Drama? What drama? Under any other circumstances, I would've never reacted the way I did.
Oh, I know.
I'm just so glad it all worked out.
It always does.
[music continues] And what I feel in my heart They tell sincerely No other words Can tell it half so clearly Three little words Eight little letters - [crowd gasps] - Which simply mean I love you Simply mean I love you.
[applause] It was really good that Le'Andria could step in when Tamela had to duck out.
Yeah, yeah, these things happen.
You know, if you would've told me a year ago that this would be my life, I would've told you you were crazy.
I knew it'd happen all along.
- You did? - Oh, yeah.
Some people got it and some people don't.
And the ones that got it aren't better than the ones that don't, but they've got it.
And you've got it.
I think you've got it, too.
I'm thinking, uh, let's get the check.
Me, too.
- [music playing] - [chatter] Bishop, what you over here doing hiding all by your lonesome? You should be out there cutting tile.
Well, my wife's otherwise occupied.
Oh, well, why don't you come dance with me? Come on, one song.
You know, as much fun as that would be, I don't think that's a good idea.
Please? I was hoping for some quality time.
Well, my doors at Calvary are always open.
I'm sure you know this by now, but I'm interested in more of a personal connection.
Have been from day one.
Yes, I've I've sensed that.
I've sensed that from you, too.
Yes, and I'm sure that's not inaccurate, and I'm flattered, Ms.
Truly, but, um But what? Even a man of God is still a man.
[music playing] Hmm.
I told that brother of mine this'll never work, but he didn't want to listen.
- I told him, "Basie, that old man" - But you know what Basie says.
"There's more than one way to skin a Greenleaf.
" TASHA: That's right.
[chuckles] I don't care how we do it as long as it hurts.
As long as it hurts bad.
So it's one, two, three, one, two, three.
One, two, three, one, two, three.
[chuckles] I'm gonna go get another drink.
- Baby? - Yeah? We should go ahead and let her go out tonight.
No, we talked about that.
Come on, look at her.
Look at how much fun she's having.
[indistinct conversation] We can ground her tomorrow, you know.
Even tack on a week or two, whatever.
But she's having such a good time.
This is such a special night.
[sighs] I found a condom in her room.
They're having sex.
My mom knows we're having sex.
She doesn't want me seeing you.
What? You told her, Zora? No, she found the condoms in my room.
Why didn't you hide them? I did.
She went through my stuff, Isaiah.
Then why didn't you lie? And say what, exactly? I'm holding them for a friend? Why do you look like that? I'm the one in trouble, not you.
So, what? So, how are we ever supposed to spend time with each other? I'm just supposed to hold your hand now? - Would that be so bad? - Yeah.
No, but some.
Man, it's like we 12 years old.
You should be.
Stop making a scene.
One, two, three, one, two, three.
[music playing] [music continues] - Why you always bugging? - I'm not.
I just don't What's the matter? - Sophia? - I'll be right back.
Isaiah, come back inside.
- I'm out.
- Why are you mad at me? You could've had the condoms at your house, but you didn't.
I'm in trouble.
- You blaming me? - Isaiah, come on.
You really blaming me? - I'm through.
I'm through with you.
- Get off of me, Isaiah! - [grunts] - [gasps] Baby, baby, I'm sorry.
- Isaiah, please stop.
- Baby, baby, I'm sorry.
- Please, Isaiah.
- I'm sorry.
I won't do it again.
I promise you.
I won't do it again, babe.
Babe, I'm sorry.
We'll go back inside.
Babe, I'm sorry.
Babe! [music continues] Sophia.
Sophia, what's the matter? Uncle Jacob? Yeah, sweetie, what's up? I just saw Isaiah hit Zora.
He did what? Isaiah hit Zora? - Huh? - Oh, my word.
Where is she? - Where are they? - They're right there, right there.
Yeah? - Baby.
- Yes? - What? You okay? - What are you talking about? - I'm fine.
- Did Isaiah hit you? - Wait, what? - Are these bru - No, I got hit by a door.
- Are these bruises on your arm? - I got hit by a door.
- Sophia just told us Isaiah hit you.
- You what?! - Zora, please.
- Hey, answer me.
- He did not hit me.
- KERISSA: What are these bruises? - Hey, little boy, did you put your hands on my daughter? Man, I don't know what you talking about.
Daddy, please stop.
Listen to me.
- Did he hit you? - He did not touch me, no! - Did he hit you? - No! Isaiah.
- Yo, I didn't do nothing, bruh.
- [Zora screams] - MAE: Jacob! - ZORA: Why would you do that? [groans] How could you? I said I was fine! - Zora.
- Don't follow me.
KERISSA: Zora? [groans] No, Jacob.
Better be happy I didn't kill you, boy.
Well, thank God you were there.
- Yeah, no problem.
- Jeez.
- I'll call you when I get home? - Yeah.
You sure you guys are gonna be okay? Yeah, we'll be fine.
I just wanna make sure that Zora's all right, talk to Sophia about what happened.
All right, well, I'll be up late.
Okay, I'll call.
- Good night, sweetie.
- Yeah.
All right.
- You expect me to not do anything? - Are you kidding me? - [all arguing] - Shh.
And on top of whatever else the girl's been suffering, her own father adds to the problem.
- Mae.
- What? - Jacob had his reasons.
- But he hit a child.
There's got to be a way to deal with things - Oh, try to relax! - and not make them worse.
[knocking] Zora, open this door.
[scoffs] Zora.
Zora, just come on out, honey.
We can go home and talk and it'll all be fine, baby.
Go away! Dr.
Butler, I'm extremely sorry.
Thank you for saying that.
- This is just so upsetting.
- [sighs] Come with me, Mae.
Let's get something to settle those nerves.
Oh, no, no, thank you.
Until that child comes out the bathroom, I don't know I just can't even get my mind straight.
- I just don't know.
- Okay.
[sighs] Can I try, Aunt Kerissa? [sighs] Sure, honey.
[sniffles] Z, it's me.
Sophia, you are the last person I wanna see right now.
Everybody just leave me alone, please! Okay, look, Pop, I already know what you're gonna say.
No, you don't.
I'd have done the same thing.
Zora, honey, it's Auntie G.
Can I come in, baby? [phone buzzing] GRACE: You don't have to come out.
Just let me come in, okay, honey? Aunt Gigi, please just leave me alone.
Are you okay? ISAIAH: I'll never do it again.
That's what you always say.
I don't know what it is, baby.
It's just something about you that makes me so crazy.
I never felt this way before.
Let's get out of here.
Come away with me.
I don't know.
I love you.
Zora? I gotta go.
[exhales] Oh, I'm so glad we left Winkie at my mother's.
- Oh, yeah.
- [lock clicks] - Honey.
- Baby.
You okay? - I wanna go home.
- Okay, come on, honey.
- [sighs] What a night.
- Mm.
I'm going home to change.
You should get a ride with Grace and Sophia.
- Where are you going? - To see my sister.
- Auntie's in town? - Just for the night.
[music playing] [chuckles] Wow.
What? I wanna tell you really, oh, yeah Come here.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey Hey, hey, hey, hey I wanna know you, oh, oh You look beautiful.
Hey, baby How you doing tonight? I wanna let you know - Did I do something wrong? - No.
It's not you.
Then what's the matter? I haven't been with anybody like this since Kevin.
And I'm not a random sex kind of girl, so.
I never thought you were.
And this isn't random.
I've been thinking about this for a long time now.
Me, too, I guess.
What am I doing? - If you don't wanna do this, we don't - No, no, I - I want to.
- Yeah, but what? I've only been with Kevin.
That's okay.
We can take it slow.
What's the matter now? I have a scar.
When they were inducing Nathan, there were complications and they did an emergency C-section, so I have a scar.
Let me see.
[exhales] Come on.
Let me see.
I can't stay away With the fire we make It's getting higher and higher - Like the night to the day - [kisses] [exhales] Charity, you're beautiful.
This abyss of the world And it takes us to the stars It's getting higher and higher - It's the fire we make - It's the fire we make Getting sweeter and sweeter - Like a night to a day - About to make up these flames I can't stay away - Say it's no, no - Yeah [knocking] [door closes] - You moving? - Yep.
Got an offer from an investor.
Wants me to open a club in Stockholm.
- Sweden?! - Yep.
White folks love their blues.
[chuckles] So, where is it? Where's this thing you got? - That's it? - That's why you came here, isn't it? Don't you even wanna talk? - What is there to talk about, Mae? - Mac! I ain't got nothing to say about Mac.
Oh, Mavis, come on, now.
He was our brother! So, where is the magic thing? Where is it? So, what you think? I think I'm tired of fighting for what's already rightfully mine.
I don't need the headaches.
But if you could get the club back I don't want the club back.
Didn't you just hear me say I'm going? And anyway, what's it to you? Daddy is dead, Mavis.
Mac is dead.
- Good riddance.
- Seriously? What you standing there for, looking at me like that? I mean, really, Mae, what do you want? You got everything.
You got your big house on the hill and you got your you got your family, you got you got your things.
You you got everything you wanted.
I want my sister back.
- Well, you can't have me.
- Why? You asking me why? You know why.
Sister? You don't even know what that word means.
Well, I wanna learn.
Too late for that.
It's not too late.
It's never too late.
We have time, Mavis.
- We have time.
- Give this to Gigi.
Let her have it.
Let her do whatever she want to with that club.
I don't care.
Save the world, whatever she wanna do.
I'm sorry.
Did you hear what I just said? I said I'm sorry.
Look, we're all victims! All of us! I mean, even even Mac in his own way - Take it and give it to Gigi - No.
or I'm gonna tear the whole damn thing up! Now take it! And for what it's worth and it may not be much I forgive you.
You forgive me? - You forgive me for what? - Don't make me say it.
No, I wanna hear you say it.
'Cause you forgive me for what? James.
Yes, for getting back at me with him that one time.
Yes, for getting back at me with him that one time.
For that, Lord, I forgive you.
[chuckles] One time? Is that what he told you? One time? Really? Mae, I I can't even count the times I threw your husband out of here.
You stop that right now.
Or not.
Do you hear me? You stop it! [chuckles] Is there any lie you won't suck onto like a leech just to keep from tasting the truth, the tip of your tongue? - He never loved you.
- That is not true.
He thought you were pretty.
Oh, he knew for sure you was pretty.
You was a pretty, little light-skinned thing.
You better quit.
No, he wanted you 'cause you were so pretty.
It was all to make him look good and to help the business the church.
But that's all it was.
That's all it's ever been.
And that's all it'll ever be, about the business.
You can see yourself out.
I think what he chose is a wife.
So what does that make you? [door opens] [door closes] So, how do you wanna handle this? I'm gonna go talk to her.
What are you gonna say? Uh, um, just what I did was wrong.
You know, I shouldn't have put my hands on the boy.
I don't know, just just that I love her.
What did we do wrong, Jacob? Wrong? We didn't do anything wrong.
It's just that ever since that child was born, I've done everything I can to make her feel how valuable she is, how precious.
Tried to prepare her for a world that might try and beat her down, and then she goes off and lets herself be hit? Faith was the same way.
That guy she was seeing when she left home treated her something awful.
We can't control everything.
- You can't.
- I know.
But there is obviously something inside of her that is broken or unfinished that feels like she deserves that.
And I'm thinking about her taking that pain because of something that she feels she deserves.
It breaks my heart.
Look we've got her for one more year in this house.
Love can do a lot in a year.
It's gonna be okay.
- All right? - [sighs] - Everything's gonna be okay.
- Okay.
I'll be right back.
Hey, Zora? Zora? [knocking] Zora, sweetheart, you awake? [knocks] Zora? Zora? - Kerissa?! - Yeah? - Baby? Kerissa? - Yeah, what's wrong? - Kerissa? - What's wrong? - Baby, she's not here.
- What? What do you mean she's not here? Zora! Zora? - She's not in there? - Zora? Zora? Zora? - Hi, Daddy.
- Good morning.
- Morning.
You all right? - [sighs] - [door opens] - What's the mat Mama? You've been out all night? I want you out of this house.
- Whoa, what? - Can we talk about this upstairs? - There's nothing to talk about.
- Mae.
You told me it only happened one time.
[sighs] So be it.
Oh, Mama.
Could you make me some breakfast, please? I'll have it in the sun room.
I've been driving all night.
I'm starving.
[phone ringing] - Hello? - KERISSA: Gigi, Zora's gone.
And Isaiah's parents says he's gone, too.
We have no idea where they went or even if they're all right.
[sighs] Bishop.
Come on in.
[music playing]
