Happy Not Knowing

1
By the end of first semester,
most college students
have found their rhythm
and probably a bunch of bad habits.
But with the coming of second semester,
a new chapter of college emerges
cuffing season.
That time of year when you're
just lookin' to get boo'd up.
Hey.
Now, I know what you're thinking,
but I am just happy that
Annika has found someone
who makes her happy.
Even being in a relationship
through your phone
is nicer than having no one at all.
This way. It's that
time of the school year
when life is just easier
when you have a boo.
Later, cutie.
Bye, beautiful.
As for me,
while I have certainly
enjoyed the player lifestyle,
I've given it all up
for a baddie named Grace.
She's a Phi Psi, sister
sorority of the Gammas,
and so cool, she even speaks Dothraki.
We've been together
for a full fortnight,
and we have been playing
a lot of "Fortnite."
Man, she is awesome.
- Hey, babe.
- Hey.
I know you have those
back-to-back classes today
and it's hard to get to
lunch, so I got it for you.
Extra avocado?
That's $2.
I know.
She's so sweet.
- Man, don't you just love her?
- No. Nobody does.
Everybody hates Grace.
Extra avocado Grace?
Wait, you hate Grace?
Oh, yeah. We all hate Grace.
Right, Kiela?
Wait, what are we talking about?
How we all don't like Grace.
Oh, yeah, Tax Break Barbie not a fan.
- You too?
- She's conservative, Junior.
- She's not our people.
- Come on.
Mm. Your girl follows Mitt Romney,
Meghan McCain, Ana Navarro
Oh, so you stalked Grace.
No, I did recon.
Mm-hmm.
I search everything, okay?
Instagram, Twitter, Venmo,
luggage, anything I can find.
How do you think I knew he
wore boxers and not briefs?
Uh, can a man not let
his junk breathe in peace?
No, I like Grace.
We're in the same lecture class,
she's really smart,
and I think you guys are a good match.
I gotta say, Junior,
I'm really happy for you.
Thank you. See? You guys
are just being petty.
People can come from opposite
sides of political lines
and still find things in common.
Ah, sleeping with the enemy.
Look, at first, when I heard all that,
I wasn't thrilled, either,
but the more we talked,
the more I realized,
yeah, we don't agree on certain things,
but that's just a small
part of the person she is.
You should invite
you-know-who to you-know-what.
Hey, are you talking about my birthday?
I know you're talking about my birthday.
Lauryn told me about the surprise party.
Snitch-ass, every time.
I don't like surprises, okay?
Come on! We'll make a night of it.
It'll be just us.
Oh, I wish I could
go, but I'm on RA duty.
Damn.
Okay, well, the rest of
you people, no plus-ones.
In fact, I'm not even inviting Yaz.
- Yeah, we can do that.
- Mm-hmm.
It's nice of you to
think of Lauryn and Zeke,
especially since they have
no one to go with anyways.
- Right.
- Yeah. It's fair.
Okay, Zeke, lightning round.
All right, uh, cerebellum
- Yeah.
- hippocampus
- Nice.
- hypothalamus
- Good one.
- parietal lobe
- Yes.
- and frontal cortex.
Good job.
And those cards are extra-thick stock
from Kinko's on Fairfax.
I don't think that will be on the test,
but you crushed it.
You know that.
It's a lot easier when
you're behind the cards.
Zeke, my roommates
could come in any minute.
Shouldn't we just tell them,
instead of them finding out?
You're happy, right?
This isn't a Grace situation?
Yes, I'm very happy.
And Grace is the reason
I want to be careful.
Our friends are very judgmental.
Facts.
We just need to debut at the right time.
Yeah, but what am I gonna do
when you're there at the party all night
and I have to contain myself?
How about, whenever you want
to say something sweet to me,
we just use a code word?
- Cerebellum.
- Cerebellum.
Oh, yes.
It smells like heart disease
in here and I love it.
Oh, yeah, tonight's itinerary
Best of five "Super
Smash Bros." tourney.
Then I thought maybe we could play
a friendly but
competitive game of dominos
and then finish off with
a Tyrese movie marathon.
How's that sound?
Very nice. Sounds like
last Friday. I'm down.
Oh, also, they, uh, didn't
have our regular IPA,
so, yeah, I switched it up for tonight.
Smart. Don't want the
routine to get stale.
Friday night wings, my
man. You know the drill.
As usual, we will be rating
flavor, heat, tenderness,
tenderness and flavor, umami.
- Yes, need umami.
- Got to have umami.
And just, you know, the
overall vibe of the wing itself.
Also, reminder, sweet honey sriracha
has been the reigning champ
for the past eight weeks.
- Eight weeks?
- Yeah.
- Damn, that's two months.
- Two months.
We've been doing this every
Friday for the past two months.
Damn.
Yeah.
Well, look, man, I'm
spoken for and happy
with this whole domestic
Friday thing we got going,
but I think you need
to get out of the house.
I'm worried about you.
I think you need to go
find your Zoey or not,
maybe just a fr whatever.
You just need to go live a little,
and I don't want to be holding you back.
Bro, you're not holding me back.
What am I supposed to be
doing, going out to the club
and spending hundreds of
dollars for drinks on girls,
or paying Uber surge prices,
ruining our Saturday
morning sweat sessions
'cause I have a hangover?
No, bro, I'd rather be
doing this than that.
Okay, well, this this this is
literally Hot Cheeto dust
on a Kirkland Signature wing.
- That's true.
- That's what this is, okay?
So you need to you need to go, man.
Live a little.
Maybe I could go.
- You're right.
- You got to go, man.
Oh, this girl Jessica
that I had matched with
a few weeks ago is back
in town on a layover.
She's a flight attendant,
and she wants to visit my cockpit, boy.
All right, now, you
see, that's something
only a man who hasn't seen a
woman in two months would say.
You cannot say that
when you see her, okay?
Yes, I can.
Ha-aah!
Oooh, it's too hot.
It's too hot but very, very good.
Is that sweet honey sriracha?
No, maple chipotle.
So my friends aren't the biggest
fans of my girl. I get it.
It took me half a season
to like "Succession."
But I know that when they
get to know her like I have,
they will love her.
- Happy birthday, Zaz.
- Hey.
- Hey.
- Hi.
I know you said no gifts,
but we got you something pretty special.
I heard you love Dave & Buster's.
Oh, Junior, I'm gonna
Dave & bust your ass.
I knew we should have gone
with The Cheesecake Factory.
- Hey. Uh, what are you doing?
- Hey.
I thought this was supposed
to be just our friends.
Which is why I didn't
even invite my girlfriend.
Well, it's not too late.
Ride share runs all night.
Look, Zaara, can you
please just let Grace stay?
I promise, by the end of the
night, we will all be buds.
Fine.
But you have real "Give your
stepmom a chance" energy.
Well, I want you to give her a chance.
There's the birthday girl looking fresh.
Anyways, I know you said
this was a no-couples party,
but Kwame really wanted
to say happy birthday.

Can't get to the phone. Leave a message.
Sure, maybe Annika and I are
co-opting Zaara's birthday
just to get everyone to love Grace.

She'll have another birthday next year.

No, no, you have to stick around.
There's something I
actually want you to hear.
Um, hello, everybody,
can I get your attention?
You know, the beautiful
thing about birthdays
is that they're a great time
to reflect on friendships.
Like how, at first,
Zaara wanted to murder me,
but now here we are.
Right? Friends.
It's crazy.
It's actually hilarious
how things change.
Like, maybe at first
you don't like somebody
