Harry's Law (2011) s01e04 Episode Script

Wheels Of Justice

Previously on "Harry's Law" Isn't it looking great? No, it looks like a shoe store.
Well, there's no reason we can't be both, a law firm and a shoe store.
Damien Winslow, Winslow Security.
We provide privatized security to the local merchants in the neighborhood.
.
What the? - I must have hit a vein or something.
- Oh, my God! - You shot this man? - Allegedly.
Look at that all clients of Damien winslow.
Without him, their places of business get robbed.
We've just been sued by a former employee.
- Can you help us? - I can, and I will.
You took this case because you wanted to have sex with me.
Oh, no.
A dinner, a movie, a walk in the park.
Maybe at some point leading to Harry, this is Yvonne Morris.
It's the lady that wants to sue the fast food joints.
We're a very small firm.
Suing those restaurants they're huge corporations.
We can't afford to do that.
I'm very, very sorry.
Tommy Jefferson, as good as it gets.
Bring her to me.
Who wrote this crap? - You didn't write it.
- I did, actually.
It's good.
How would you like to assist me on this case? Chance of a lifetime.
Get to observe Tommy Jefferson up close.
What do you mean, you're working with Tommy? He's giving me real law work to do, Harry.
You're not qualified to do real law work.
Whatever I do with Tommy - won't interfere with my work here.
- See that it doesn't.
I'm not going to waste your time.
You're biting off even more than you can chew.
This will be a war.
I will wage it.
Between now and trial, you need to become sympathetic.
Bottom line: If the jury doesn't love you, you're done.
And my little baby said to me, "mama, why do we have to be fat?" Cut.
Okay.
Yvonne.
You don't have to be the best actress in the world, but there's no rule that says you need to be the worst.
Let's try this again.
I want you to pretend that your rotund little pride and joy just came up to you with tears in his eyes and asked that question.
How about you do something for me? How about you see me as a human being and not just a cash cow? Or a cow.
But a human being.
I had a heart attack at the age of 39 39! Does that mean anything to you? And you treat me like a cow.
And you treat me like a gift horse that you look in the mouth.
I am the attorney that took your case.
The only attorney let's not forget that.
All right.
Well, I didn't come here to make a movie.
I'm going to tell you something right now.
You can't beat the four biggest fast food companies in a court of law.
Not gonna happen.
- You said you could get me money! - By settling.
We don't have the means to beat them in a trial.
Well, why would they settle? They fear bad publicity, which I can generate.
They're going to need to see that we're capable of putting on a show! And to do that, I need you to make a movie! - Don't yell at me.
- Hey.
I'll swing on you.
I told you when you first waddled through that door that if you were going to have any chance here any you're going to have to do exactly as I say including making, perhaps, a self-serving, pandering video.
Now, let's try this again.
From the top.
And Action.
And my little baby He said to me, "mama" What did he say again? Mother of God.
We could leave Friday night, come back first thing Sunday morning, or stay all day Sunday.
Why not, right? Staying in a hotel? Just the two of us? Yes, just the two of us.
Chunhua, this would be me making a move the two of us going off on a romantic weekend together.
Well, I'd like to.
It's not that.
But you know my father.
I'm not sure he - Chunhua? - Shut up! - Shut up! - Chunhua, can you hear me? Chunhua, are you there? Can you hear me? Shut up! Chunhua, talk to me.
- And don't move.
- Chunhua, can you hear me? Next time, I cut your throat! Can you hear me? Chunhua! - Chunhua! - Papa! Papa! Papa! Emergency! Please come, quickly! Trauma team to the E.
R.
Chunhua? I'm okay, Adam.
I'm okay.
Are you sure? Yes.
My father chased him off.
- I'm fine.
- Just My God.
Excuse me.
You think you'd be up for looking at some mug shots? Okay.
Can we wait some on this? We can.
Sooner, the better.
Adam please.
I'm okay.
And I'll feel better knowing he's caught.
Okay.
It happened in an alley right behind the laundromat.
She's really okay? In shock, but yeah.
I think.
And you? Me? I'm A little shaken, I guess.
Jenna, you're still carrying your mace? - And a knife.
And a taser.
- She was able to I.
D.
The guy in a mug shot book, so that's good.
The police are already looking for him.
Well, well, well.
You work here.
And here I was thinking you work for Tommy Jefferson now.
That's it? That's all you got? - All I got? - Yeah, I was thinking there was more, so go ahead.
Let's hear it, I can take it.
I can see a little of Tommy's bravado has rubbed off on you already.
Look, Harry, just 'cause you don't think we got a case - There isn't a case.
- She had a heart attack.
So what? She didn't have to eat the food.
Nobody held a gun to her head.
- The food is addictive.
- Oh, please.
It is! Have you read the science? - Have you seen the studies? - And what's next, Malcolm? You going to go after pizza shops? How about doughnuts? - At what point - are you seriously defending fast food? I'm seriously saying we live in a free country.
If I want a big Mac, I should be free to have one.
And suing fast food is the equivalent of suing big tobacco.
You're never going to make a nickel.
- You heard it here first.
- I'm also hearing anger.
- What's that about? - I'm not angry.
- Yes, you are.
- No, I'm not.
Yes, you are.
Don't give me that look.
There's practically spittle coming out of your mouth.
Well, if I'm angry, it might be because I didn't hire you to work for Tommy Jefferson.
Covered that.
And if I'm angry, it's because these types of ridiculous suits add up a ridiculously litigious society.
Which adds up to people hating lawyers, which I happen to be one.
So, yeah, this stupid lawsuit of yours pisses me off.
Are you sure? You're okay to leave? There's nothing wrong with me, Adam.
I have a few bruises, that's all.
Chunhua, even if you're physically okay, you certainly have to be suffering emotionally.
Well, the hospital only treats physical wounds, so I came as soon All right, Fung, you don't need to tell me, okay? Are you all right, Chunhua? I'll be okay.
Look, I'm sorry.
Whoever did this, I promise I'll get him.
I give you my word.
I'll find out who did this.
That won't be necessary.
We got him.
- You did? - Really? - Soon as you feel up to a lineup.
- Let's do it now.
Wait wait, wait, Chunhua I want to just get it over with.
But your father My father didn't see his face, I did.
And the sooner I can start forgetting it the better.
Let's go! Okay.
Medical records yellow tab.
Scientific studies red tab.
Witness affidavits blue tab.
Supplemental law review articles green tab.
Market research discovery orange tab.
Preparation, preparation, preparation.
There's no substitute.
All four chains will have regional counsel at the meeting.
Not their top tier, but they're all ranking partners in their respective firms.
- How's our video? - Color correcting, about to dub.
Do wet-tech right after lunch.
Harry, my friend, what a surprise.
- You've come to join the case.
- I love it.
I haven't come to join the case.
Malcolm I'm sure you have a name.
Could I have a second with Mr.
Jefferson? Why not join in, Harry? Look, Tommy, I won't get into the merits of your case here, which, from my perspective, there aren't any.
That's negative.
Negative doesn't work for me.
I got a little angry before with Malcolm.
And upon reflection, I realize my wrath was misplaced.
My anger is more Well, with you.
Me? Why? Because I believe in Malcolm.
I think he's going to make for a fine lawyer one day.
The worst thing that could possibly happen would be for him to fall under the wrong influence.
The idea of Malcolm emulating you in any way You're out of line.
No, I'm not.
You're suing four corporate giants.
Whatever delusions of grandeur you may have I know who I am, thank you.
I'm "Henderson v.
United States Transit Company.
" $17 million.
I'm "Rocher v.
The State of Oregon.
" $9 million.
I am "Eustis v.
Phillip Morris" my favorite $19 million.
Yes, I know you've gotten big verdicts before.
And you know what, Tommy? I actually do like you, but Harry, I'm a little busy right now, so, can we discuss this later? I've got the settlement conference to prepare for.
If you want to take Malcolm with you, fine, I understand.
But I really need to focus right now.
- Tommy - look, we disagree.
Friends do from time to time.
It's no big deal.
It's just I really need to prepare for this upcoming meeting, so we'll do this later.
- Okay? - Okay.
I didn't mean to beat up on the guy, but What the hell is this? It's the new Ugg.
The question is, why does it bother you so much? Especially if Malcolm's getting some real world experience.
Real world experience with Tommy Jefferson.
That isn't the kind of They actually call a shoe an Ugg? Tommy is actually a nice guy.
- Says who? - Underneath all his bluster, he's kind of sweet.
Sweet? Did you say sweet? She make the guy? They're at the police station now.
Chatty Cathy.
Okay, you sure you're ready? Yes.
Okay, now, he won't be able to see you, so you need not worry about that.
All you got to do is indicate whether you see him, and we're done.
Take 15 seconds, tops.
Okay.
All right, let's bring 'em in.
- Feet on the line, face forward.
- All right, I'm gonna have each of them step forward, one after another It's number two.
- Are you sure? - Yes! It's number two.
- Can I go now? - Okay.
I just want to make sure.
Number two, step forward.
It's him, I already told you! Okay.
We're done Hey, stop him! I kill you! I kill you! I kill you! I kill you! Thomas specializes in PTSD.
Of course he does.
Excuse me? Sorry.
If you'd like, he can maybe pay her a visit, you know, talk with her.
Let me run it by her and see.
Yeah, whatever you like.
Thanks, Rachel.
Thanks.
Okay.
Basically, Yvonne, Malcolm, you two will be seated as you are now, same seats.
The opposing attorneys will also be here.
And where will you be? I will be in the wings for three full minutes after they've assembled.
He likes to make an entrance.
Now, there may come a time when I want to highlight you.
You need not do anything.
Just sit there.
Cue Yvonne.
Cue Malcolm.
Cue Lisa.
And me.
This is effective, trust me.
Yvonne.
Malcolm.
Lisa.
Me.
Yvonne.
Malcolm.
Lisa.
Seems a little ridiculous.
Lisa.
The goal is to let them know that if we go to trial, it will be a circus where their liabilities will take center ring.
It will seem ridiculous, because it is, by design.
"Ridiculous" works.
I'm Mr.
ridiculous.
Got it? I do.
Questions? - Spotlights? - I think Harry's right, He seems a little Certifiable? I don't know what to do.
Well, look, I will tell you he heats both his pools suing defendants who fear bad publicity.
Whether he'll scare these people, I don't know, but he has a way of making his nonsense work out for him.
You see how he buried the laundromats with just a few press conferences.
How's Chunhua doing? I think she's okay.
Adam, why are you not with her? A man just tried to rape her.
I've been with her.
I Harriet's Law and Fine Shoes It's Chunhua.
Hey.
Now? Well, sure, okay.
I'll pick you up.
What? The District Attorney wants to see her.
I really appreciate you coming in on such short notice.
And also My condolences for your ordeal.
I actually know firsthand the trauma of a sexual assault, when I was in high school.
What's going on? You'll remember, six months ago, City Councilman Rob Gallagher was killed.
The case had gone cold, to the dismay of both the public and the Cincinnati Enquirer.
The case has now heated up.
The man who attacked you has information we think reliable on who killed councilman Gallagher.
Oh, no.
What's going on? He also has a very good attorney.
We are very likely going to make a deal with your assailant.
If he gives us information leading to the conviction of councilman Gallagher's killer, we will extend to him transactional immunity.
- What are you talking about? - He's going to walk free.
He's cutting a deal that allows him to walk free.
- What? - I'm sorry, but You're just going to let him go? - Weighing the severity of - you're going to let him go? He likely will be let go, yes.
How? How could this possibly be? I could give you an answer, but I doubt it would satisfy you.
This sucks.
Yes, it does.
It completely sucks.
Oh, my God.
How am I He's just going to be out there, walking the streets? - Chunhua.
.
- No! I am so sorry.
Where is she now? At home.
She's not talking to anybody.
Even you? I think she's a bit disgusted with lawyers at the moment.
Adam, you can't just let her go all silent, that's the worst thing.
Off to settle your big case.
This true? The guy's out? It's true.
We got an address on him? Don't be ridiculous.
We got an address? Do not be stupid.
Damien, look at me.
These things have a way of working themselves out.
You got that right.
You want to be taken out of commission? You'll no longer be in a position to help a lot of people.
Is that what you want? Look, I know you're personalizing this and I understand that.
But there's nothing you could've done.
That ain't true.
My job is to make it clear that crap don't fly in my neighborhood.
With all due respect, I know you're good at what you do, but that crap is flying in every neighborhood.
Not mine.
Yes, who this? Hey, Fung, it's, uh, Jenna.
I brought you guys some soup.
- What? Soup? - Yeah.
I'm not sure if it really heals in this situation, and it tastes horrible, but I thought it might get me in the door.
Uh, okay.
It's not just Adam.
We're all worried about you.
You have to reach out to your friends with this kind of trauma.
You think you know my trauma, Jenna? I might.
When I was seven years old, I had an encounter with the, quote, "friendly Uncle," unquote.
And I didn't get off as lucky as you did.
Oh.
I'm sorry.
I didn't come here to compare tragedies.
I just Talking to people does help.
I know because I didn't.
I just played with my dolls.
And I gave them this perfect life, where I retreated into make-believe.
That's what I did.
And the likelihood is I've never really come out.
I just stayed Tucked in pretty.
Pretty clothes, pretty shoes, happy, bright colors.
I stay as far away from problems as I never wanted a challenging career that would be too stressful.
I just wanted Pretty.
Happy.
I read an article that says your culture is especially prone to shame over this kind of thing, so People are here for you.
You can choose to stay locked in your house.
But I promise you, that soup tastes really horrible, and I will keep bringing it.
Hey.
Where's Adam at? Talking about your girlfriend here, bro.
Chunhua.
Give me the guy's address.
Damien, there's nothing I'd love more than to I'm a lawyer.
I'd be aiding and abetting a crime.
I can't.
What exactly are you doing? Just getting a little oxygen to the brain.
It's good for the acuity.
You seem a little anxious.
Seem like a nut job.
Of course I'm anxious.
I'm about to tilt my sword at the four biggest fast-food chains in the world.
If I wasn't anxious, I'd be stupid.
Do I look stupid? What happened to Mr.
cocky? Oh, don't worry about me.
When it's showtime, I'm ready.
- They here? - No.
They're not coming.
What do you mean, they're not coming? What's that? They have filed a motion to dismiss the complaint.
I take it that's bad.
It's not bad.
It's good.
Sort of.
The bad thing is, they typically win these motions.
The good thing is if we survive it, they're more inclined to settle.
This is an opportunity.
This is a break.
Instead of putting on our show in my conference room, we'll do it in court.
It's judge Coulis.
Not the best judge for us.
- And why is that? - Well, she hates me.
She thinks I'm showy.
Where does she get that? You know, Yvonne, your sarcasm doesn't really help me, and it doesn't help you.
What do we do, Tommy? What do we do? We regroup.
We gather ourselves, we go into court, and we win it there that's what we do.
That is what we do.
All settled then.
You going into court now? First thing tomorrow.
Judge Coulis.
You know they've never lost one of these hearings.
Always a first time.
Malcolm, the reason I've been a little harsh on this I'm not denying Tommy has had some success with his bluster.
A lot of jurors love him, but judges don't.
What you'll likely experience tomorrow is what the bench thinks of lawyers like Tommy Jefferson.
I don't want judges ever drawing those conclusions about you.
Got it.
Oh I read your research and law memo.
It was quite good.
Thanks.
Wait a minute, guys.
Just having a bad dream, bro.
- No! - Come on.
Come on.
Come on.
No! No! I'm told you like to bash women's heads, that right? - No.
- You do it like that? Or more like that? No! Man, please.
You can't do this! You can't do this.
Oh, I can't do it? What, like you can't rape women? This is a free society, you freaky-ass bitch.
No, no, no, no, no.
No going to sleep just yet.
Lesson not over.
Don't you ever do nothin' to nobody in that neighborhood again.
Especially to somebody I know.
Watch your grimy ass.
You got that? You want to make deals with the police, think they can help you, you trifling-ass bitch?! Try telling the police who did this to you.
See if they help.
If I want to kill you, I'll kill you.
Police can't do nothing.
You remember that.
What?! And when did this happen? Okay.
What happened? The guy who attacked Chunhua he's lying in a hospital in critical condition.
Excuse me? The police are looking for Damien.
Oh, boy.
Adam, did you give Damien the guy's address? No.
I don't even know his address.
Harry, I swear, I did not.
Are you okay? I'm fine.
It's just I can't bring my A-game, that's all.
- Why not? - I told you.
This particular judge doesn't like my A-game.
Look at me, Tommy.
We've got the research.
A viable fact-pattern, the scientific studies.
We have a solid presentable case.
And what else do we have? - Tommy, what else do we have? - We have Tommy Jefferson.
Oh, that wasn't good enough for me.
Was it good enough for you? We have Tommy Jefferson.
Is he going to be all right? Yeah, he'll be fine.
You're kind of cute, by the way.
- Did you know this? - Not the time.
There's never a bad time to be cute.
All rise.
Case number 38787.
- Yvonne Morris v - waive reading, judge.
Oh, my God, I should have known.
What's that supposed to mean? Your client is suing fast food because she ate it, and she got fat.
Okay, first, she had a heart attack.
And she doesn't bear responsibility for that? - Were you duped? - Uh, no, but - Yvonne I smell it, I like it.
Yvonne! Isn't this the height of playing the victim card? Good start, judge.
Let's take a break so I can drive a tractor through that big open mind of yours.
Oh, boy.
Excuse me, your honor.
May I have one second, please? You're letting her bait you.
We agreed you would not let that happen.
We agreed you would be Tommy big boy today.
She's being rude.
Tommy, we don't win this unless you play it straight.
And that means showing a little deference for anybody in this room who happens to be wearing a robe.
Okay.
Okay.
This is my client, Yvonne Morris.
Lives on fast food row on third.
Eats at one of the defendants' restaurants every day.
Now, unlike with most plaintiffs who can't really prove where they dined, I've got affidavits from the defendants' employees.
She ate their burgers, their fries, their nuggets, their chipotle, as did her children, who are seated here.
Look at the size of them, judge.
My God.
I don't want to leap to the assumption that you actually went to law school, but I'm guessing that you've heard of contributory negligence just the same.
One could make the argument as I'm sure they would if you weren't so inclined to make it for them that my clients had a choice.
Could have gone somewhere else and had a salad maybe.
Maybe not, because it turns out, the right combination of salt, sugar and fat is addictive neurologically.
Study after study after study.
The more you eat, the more you crave.
It causes biological changes to the body.
People grow extra fat cells, fat cells which never die.
Go on a diet, they can lie dormant, but they never go away.
Let's assume, just for the sake of argument, that fast food is addictive.
Which, the studies show, it is.
Was she so addicted that she felt compelled to make her children eat there? That's a very good question.
And I suppose I can't fault you for blaming the parent here.
After all, it's what they do.
It's mom's fault.
They spend billions of dollars seducing kids with their advertising, deceiving kids, in fact, but, hey, let's blame mom.
Don't you think that she is somewhat to blame? Somewhat? Sure.
But so are they.
They sell billions of meals to kids under 12, and they do it with toys, happy meals, that oh-so-right recipe of sugar and salt.
The Federal Trade Commission estimates that big food spends about $1.
6 billion a year to convince children to eat unhealthy food.
And they shouldn't take any responsibility? None? Judge Admittedly, I may not know as much about tort law as you, but the law professors I studied under at the law school I did, in fact, go to they all framed the question as follows: "Who's in the best position to fix the problem?" That's how you apportion liability.
Now, maybe it's mom.
But just maybe, it's a little bit them.
How about we hold them just slightly accountable? They rake in millions of dollars a day as the obesity rate compounds and compounds.
America is now the fattest nation on the planet.
They stuff their consumers with fat, sugar, chemical additives would it be so wrong to say, "how about you contribute a little bit to the solution?" I'll tell you this: they never will.
Not so long as judges keep dismissing lawsuits.
Perhaps I could be heard, your honor.
As you put it, the only danger in eating fast food is commonly known.
If you hold us liable, who's next? Candy bars, potato chips? Liquor is certainly addictive.
Would alcoholics now have claims against? Liquor's known to be addictive, while junk food isn't.
Do we let obese people sue suppliers every time they eat too much? Sugar and fat are part of a balanced diet when consumed in moderation.
And how is that done? "Moderation"? When one double-bacon cheeseburger contains more fat than any person should consume in a week.
We sell food, for God's sake, what? Nutritionally void, carcinogenic, addictive food with advertising aimed at children, aimed at blacks, aimed at latinos - Oh, blacks now.
- You're damn right.
- All right.
- They employ race-based marketing strategies.
They cluster their franchises in urban low-income neighborhoods, preying on poor minorities - That isn't true.
- It is true.
African-Americans and latinos suffer a disproportionate amount of food-related diseases and deaths, and there's a direct causal link to fast food.
Do you have any idea how many charities we give to, many of the very same - low-income communities you - blood money! Objection, your honor! - I am outraged by that.
- Good for you.
Perhaps you could reserve some of your outrage for the fact that compared to whites, blacks have a 40% higher risk of death from heart disease, a 30% higher risk of death from cancer.
All cancers.
Maybe you could bristle over latinos suffering from high blood pressure, obesity, tuberculosis, diabetes, way more than whites.
Much of this linked to fast food you, - you, you and you.
- Why don't you blame us - for all the evil in the world? - That woman had a heart attack.
I'll blame you for that! The doctors can connect it to your product.
Now, you want to lay a little responsibility with her? Fine.
But how about you take some? That's all we're asking.
And given you make billions of dollars targeting her and people like her, marketing an addictive, deadly product that's making the world sick, I don't think it's too unreasonable an ask.
Do you? He was fantastic.
Bit by bit, I saw him winning the judge over.
I saw it.
Did she rule? Not yet.
But, Harry, I'm telling you.
That man is good.
How we doing, everybody? "How we doing, everybody?" Are you kidding? - What? Problem, slick? - Yeah, I got a problem.
Did you pay a little visit to somebody, Damien? Well, I visit a lot of people, know what I'm sayin'? What's up, sweets? Damien, there's a man lying half-dead in a hospital right now.
Really? Don't know much about that.
But in my experience, people lying half-dead in hospitals tend to have had it coming, know what I'm sayin'? Yeah, Damien, I know what I'm saying, you better listen to what I have to say, now.
There he is.
All right, Winslow, you have the right to remain silent.
Yo, man! We know his rights.
- This man is represented by counsel.
- Back off.
You got a warrant to charge in here? Okay.
That's a warrant.
Come on, man.
I am this man's lawyer.
He's represented, which means you ask him nothing.
- Damien, you say nothing, not a word.
- I'm not saying nothing.
I'll meet you down at the police station.
Do not say anything.
He's represented! You're in some need someontrouble, Damien.
Anybody say I did it? The police certainly have reason to suspect you.
Anybody say I did it? I don't know.
I haven't read the incident report.
Well, maybe you should.
'Cause I doubt anybody's pointing the finger at me.
- Why, you threaten him? - Why would I do that? Nice fella like him.
Look, you already shot a guy.
And now Hey, maybe you two should take a look at the evidence before you tell me my chances.
I'd be willing to bet the police got nothing.
If I was a betting man.
They set an arraignment yet? No.
Well, then what that tell you? Is he being charged or not? He will be.
On what grounds? Your suspicion? Did the victim I.
D.
Him? Look, either arraign him or release him.
You really want to force my hand on that? Yes, I do.
And if you arraign him, know that I'll move for a speedy trial, and know that at Damien's trial, I'll make a delicious meal out of what could possibly have motivated him to commit this assault which, right now, I don't even think he did, since I'm not seeing evidence.
And when I get finished publicly establishing what a scumbag Carl Hutchins is, the jury pool for your murder case will be so sufficiently contaminated that you might lose on the homicide and walk away with nothing.
The rapist walks, your murderer walks both go right out the door, along with any future chance you have to run for district attorney.
That's not my plan, and don't threaten me, Adam.
What is your plan, then? As far as I can tell, you haven't really got one.
No evidence on Damien for this alleged assault.
If you do charge him, you probably jeopardize your murder case.
What's your plan? Well, it isn't just to let your client go.
Off the record, why not? If Damien did anything to that rapist which there's no evidence that he did well, good.
At least the bastard suffered some consequences before you let him walk.
Maybe it'll give him pause before attacking somebody else.
It's win-win.
He still helps you convict the councilman's murderer and he gets a little of what he had coming.
You've got no play here, Kathryn.
And let's face it.
I do.
And you're comfortable making that play, Adam? Absolutely.
All rise.
Okay, okay.
I think I made my bias pretty clear.
If a person eats junk food, gets fat, she has herself to blame.
But I am persuaded that she might also fault fast food.
Judge, you cannot be serious.
Mr.
Ellis, if an industry spends billions of dollars seducing people with their product, especially children, and then reaps billions of dollars in profit while the world gets sick well, it seems to me, they should take some responsibility.
Your food is killing us, and it's not enough to simply say, "well, we shouldn't eat it.
" Your honor, you're about to do something no other court has ever done.
And to that, I say, "it is about damn time.
" If the government refuses to regulate your industry, well, then, maybe people need to litigate.
So good luck with the jury, ladies and gentlemen, 'cause that's where this case is going.
Defendants' motion is denied.
Oh, my God! You did it.
Damn right, I did.
I'm Tommy Jefferson.
Started with you, Malcolm.
Lisa.
Tommy Jefferson.
Here we go.
Everybody hugs a winner.
Can we talk, please? Can we talk? You want to talk? You'll be released in an hour or so.
As a person of interest.
What the hell that mean? It means you better watch yourself.
You keep this up, Damien, you're on a collision course with prison.
Either that, or death.
You got a job to do, slick.
So do I.
And the police, up till now, have given you a long leash.
But not anymore.
You just spent all your capital.
It just so happens we had a card to play here.
But next time, you'll be going down, I promise you.
And personally, Damien, as viscerally satisfying as it was for me to know you beat the crap out of that guy, I was also disgusted by it.
Disgusted.
Guard? Thanks.
$800,000? Could have got more probably, but cost of the trial, the present-day value of any future judgment, we figured this was good.
They agreed to pay $800,000? Did pay it.
Check's already been cut.
Here's our share.
- Is this a joke? - Wow.
That's more than you've made this month, Harry.
- Just saying.
- Well I guess I owe you an apology.
Me? You owe me an apology? I just thought Jenna said you really like this soup, so I thought I'd bring you some and Was she making it up? Do you like this? 'Cause it doesn't smell too Would you like some soup? I like that you came.
I wish I had, you know, the words to say I'm usually good with words, and Adam, you're here.
And that means a lot.
I kind of got the impression you didn't want me here.
I do.
But, um Please don't make me eat that soup.
Trial lawyer of the year? In Cincinnati.
No big deal.
Tommy! Yes, it is.
Don't be so modest.
You got to give a speech.
You got to attend half a dozen boring fund-raisers.
It's sort of like sleeping with the queen of England.
It's an honor to be asked, but nobody wants to do it.
That is so mean.
I'm never mean.
Just naughty.
You are funny.
Aren't I, though? - Tommy - Harry! Hey.
How are you? My friend Barbara.
Barbara, this is Harry.
Fantastic attorney.
Harry Korn.
- Nice to meet you.
- Hello.
- You heard the good news? - I did.
Listen, could I have one second? Oh, I need to use the little girls' room, anyway.
- Don't be long.
- I won't.
Great girl.
Fantastic.
You'd really love her.
Great girl.
She's paid for, isn't she? - Yeah.
- Listen, Tommy.
I owe you a big apology.
No, you don't.
You had an opinion.
Everybody's entitled.
No biggie.
My opinion was off-base.
Look, your style of law and mine they don't really mesh.
But that isn't to say you're not a terrific attorney; That you could squeeze any settlement out of this Well, wow.
I really underestimated you.
Hey.
It happens.
And I think you're a Not completely terrible influence on Malcolm, too.
Let's not overdo it.
Hell of a kid, Malcolm.
You do know that.
I do.
Hey, why don't you join us? No, no, no.
That's okay.
You have a good night, Tommy.
Will do.
Will do.
The line was long.
I'll try back in a minute.
Oh, where'd your friend go? Oh, she had plans.
And so do we, I thought.
Are we going to celebrate tonight? I am celebrating right now.
I swear, you have a comeback for everything, don't you? - Comeback? Me? - Yeah.
I know nothing of comebacks.
I always play with a lead.
I'm Tommy Jefferson,
