Haunted (2018) s02e02 Episode Script

Ward of Evil

My name is Daune Matthews, and I have come face-to-face with pure evil.
I grew up in a little town called Van Etten, New York.
We were on a farm.
We had all kinds of animals and stuff.
We lived off the land.
I'd be going out into the woods, I'd always bring home a hurt animal or strays.
I always wanted to help everybody.
If they had a boo-boo, oh, I had to get there first to try to fix that boo-boo.
I always dreamed to be a nurse.
I always told my mom and dad that's what I was gonna be.
My first real job was at the Cottages of Gentle Breeze.
Cottages of Gentle Breeze was mainly for senior citizens with dementia.
Dementia is a disease.
It's a disease of the brain and the nervous system.
They start losing their memory.
Yes.
There's times that they don't understand what's happening to them and they'll get angry.
When you approach them, you have to be very soft-spoken.
You can't bring your voice up very loud.
Very calm.
Very gentle.
You help them get out of bed, help them dress, give showers.
Yeah.
They forget how to do their bodily functions.
Right.
It's not a nice disease at all.
There you go.
This disease eats at your brain, and it just keeps progressing and eventually it will kill you.
It's heartbreaking.
It's a hard job.
The most rewarding part of my job is seeing 'em smile.
Whee! You dance with them.
Get 'em up, hold and dance with them.
Take 'em by the wheelchair and dance with them.
- Yeah.
- And you'd sing with them.
Stacee worked with me at the time.
Yes, I did.
They're like your children.
It does, like, go right to your heart, making 'em smile.
It's rewarding to me.
That's why I do it.
I was there at least eight years before Jackie came.
I have never run across a resident like Jackie.
Hi.
- Hi, nice to meet you.
- Hi.
Nice to meet you.
And you must be Jackie.
I'll show you upstairs.
The owner of the cottages told us that she really didn't want to accept her.
This woman had no signs of dementia.
But her daughter was adamant that Jackie needed help.
Jackie, can I show you to your room? She wasn't losing any part of her mind at that time.
She didn't want to be there.
She was not happy at all, no matter how we tried to console her.
"Whatever you need, we'll be here for you.
" She wouldn't have any of it.
None.
She stayed angry all the time.
She'd been there about a month, and little things started happening.
When I walk into the room, it's ice cold, you can see your breath.
When we reported it to the owner and she didn't believe us.
You know, "You're imagining it.
" But I know I'm not.
I felt the cold.
And then, one night, she started talking in tongue.
She'd growl at us if we get near her.
She'd tell us to stay away and she'd have this deep growl.
Stacee was with me at the time.
It wasn't Jackie's voice.
It wasn't human.
One night, Daune and I went in her room and it was just evil sounding.
Jackie.
Come on, Jackie.
The one of Jesus wouldn't go on a wall.
And there was no reason for it to come back down because of the way I had it hooked.
So I went to the owner and I told her.
And again, she thought I was exaggerating.
I told her go down there and put that picture up on that wall.
And she went in the room just to show me that I was seeing things, you know, and it did not really happen.
She couldn't put that picture up on that wall.
I said, "We've been telling you something's not right in that room.
There's something evil in that room.
" I didn't understand really what was happening, so I just kind of brushed it off before I went in.
Hello, Ms.
Jackie.
Be quiet.
Be quiet! Be quiet! Don't wake him.
If you wake him, you're gonna be sorry.
You've done it.
He's standing right beside you.
Ms.
Jackie, are you okay? I'm fine.
I'm talking with my friend.
Are you talking to God, Ms.
Jackie? No.
He is no friend of God's.
I don't know what it was, but it was something in that room.
And after a while, she stopped eating and drinking.
No meds, no bodily functions.
By now, she hasn't eaten or drank or urinated or anything in weeks.
This woman should not be alive.
She was like an empty shell.
I didn't know what to do for her.
I mean, you try to give her water, give her food or whatever, you know, and then she stops all bodily functions and you can't help.
I wasn't much of help.
But I tried.
And then, as she progressed, she was getting meaner and meaner.
More agitated.
More aggressive.
And then I went to give her a bed bath.
And I took the new aide we had with me.
Come on.
Jackie! Jackie! I had to pry Jackie's teeth off of her arm.
This was a new aide we had.
She left that day and she didn't come back.
Nobody could go near her.
And the few of people that did go in there, they were so scared they quit.
So Only a couple of us die-hards Right.
would go in.
And one night, I went into Jackie's room to make sure Jackie was okay.
Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on Earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this Oh, my God! Get it off! It felt like a snake slithering on my spine.
In the middle of the dining room, I ripped my shirt off in front of all those residents, with claw marks on my back.
After Stacee got attacked, I thought, "Nope, we gotta have protection around here.
This is just pure evil in this room.
" Pure evil.
So I started to wear my mom's crucifix.
And then, four hours later, we went into the room to change her again.
She had the cross stuck in her anus.
Oh, my God.
And then I went out the room.
My chest was bleeding.
I had a puncture wound in my chest.
We went to the nurse, Diana was working.
And she says it looks like somebody took an ice pick and poked me in the chest with an ice pick.
This was not dementia.
This woman was possessed.
At that time, the owner got some people from Ohio to do an exorcism.
- Four women and two men.
- Yes.
They go in, we're not allowed in.
They shut the door.
We had to stay on the outside.
In nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti.
Amen.
We begin the task in the name of Jesus Fuck you! Fuck you and your Fuck you! And they come out of the room and they said that it was evil.
And that's all they said to us.
And it just scared the hell out of us.
Must have been a good 45 minutes before we got brave enough to peek into that room.
Jackie? Get out.
Get out! All she said was, "Get out.
" Then she died.
She actually rose up off the bed.
You try to tell yourself it's not real.
I was there.
It's scary, reliving all of it.
I had mixed emotions.
I feel relief.
I feel bad that we really couldn't help Jackie.
After Jackie passed, we had somebody else in there.
Maria.
She didn't last two weeks.
And she passed away of a massive heart attack.
When we had her come in there, there was nothing wrong with her heart.
Then we had Beverly.
She always said that something's not right in that room.
And I always played it off.
"Ain't nothing wrong with this room.
" "We're just imagining things.
" Next day all her vital organs just shut down.
When they put a catheter in her, it was just green pus.
There was nothing wrong with her kidneys.
And when I went to see her she looked at me and she said, "I told you so.
" It was too much of a coincidence after Jackie.
She knew that there was something in that room.
And it killed her.
The owner boarded up the room so nobody could ever go in that room again.
The Cottages of Gentle Breeze closed their doors and the place sat empty for a long time.
Now it's been reopened and it is another nursing home.
And I'll always wonder if that thing is still in there.
