Hawaii Five-O (1968) s01e16 Episode Script

Up Tight

( tires screeching ) Do you know who she is? No.
A tourist from that observation point spotted her and called in.
Can we get a net under her? Police Rescue's sending one right out.
Did she say anything? Nothing.
Hey.
Hey.
Got a heck of a view from up here.
See that island over there? That's Molokai.
Crazy.
How about if I come down and join you? No! You get away! No, I've gotta do it all by myself! All right, all right, I understand.
No, you don't understand.
You don't understand.
You've gotta love everybody.
You-- ( psychadelic theme playing ) Oh! Oh, listen.
Listen.
Oh, heaven, that's beautiful.
Oh, that's the music of the stars.
Oh, groovy.
It-- ( sobbing ) Talk to me.
Will you talk to me? If you're up there somewhere, talk to me.
Please? I know you're up there, I know you are.
Just talk to me.
No! Look at me.
Look up here.
This is the way for you.
Up here.
Reach my hand.
I'll help you.
I'll take you there.
That's it, reach up.
Take my hand.
That's it.
That's it.
Here.
Reach up.
What? What? Oh, God, yes.
Oh, yes, Father, yes.
Yes, I'm-- I'm coming.
No! ( upbeat surf theme playing ) STEVE: Eadie Hastings, age 18, female, Caucasian, deceased.
Her estate, one wallet containing $3.
20, lipstick, tissues, address book and these.
Three little homemade-type pills.
Five will get you ten.
They're a methamphetamine.
Speed.
Whatever it was, she was as far out as anyone I've ever seen.
You're up pretty tight, Danno.
Why not? She reached out her hand to me.
I was inches from grabbing her.
Inches.
Let's keep the next one from slipping away.
Yeah.
Question, boss.
Go.
We got a jumper.
We got speed.
This gonna be Five-0's bag instead of Narcotics at H.
P.
D.
? Three high school kids on Molokai beat a harmless derelict to death because they thought he was the devil.
Another kid on Maui killed a cop because he thought he was looking at him funny.
All on speed.
These islands are beginning to bust at the seams with this stuff.
And for every tripper turned in, there's a dozen still roaming the streets or driving cars or motorcycles.
That answer your question? Yeah.
But there's no distribution center, no main pusher.
Nope.
It's cooked up in sinks, bathtubs, out of 2-buck chemistry sets by kick-happy kids who wanna turn on the world.
Well, who turned on Eadie Hastings is the only thing that concerns us right now.
Check her friends, acquaintances, boyfriends, anybody who ever knew her.
And check out every name in here upside down and sideways.
I'll talk to her parents.
"If this book should ever roam, "box its ears and send it home.
( suspenseful theme playing ) Eadie Hastings.
" All right, so she took drugs, but she's dead now and there wasn't anything we could have done about it.
STEVE: You could have come to us.
Maybe we can help somebody else with your cooperation, Mr.
Hastings.
Do you have any idea who might have started your daughter on drugs? If I knew that, do you think I'd be standing here? That's your job, isn't it? To find out who's supplying these innocent kids.
To find them and put them away.
Yes, it is our job.
Then why aren't you doing it? We're trying.
We're trying.
Now, do you know when she might have started? No.
But whoever it was, whoever did this to Eadie, you find him because he killed her.
He killed my little girl, and somebody's got to pay for it.
Mrs.
Hastings, we found an address book in your daughter's handbag.
Name of Donna Wales was underlined.
Does that name mean anything to you? Donna is-- Was Eadie's best friend.
Can you tell me something about her? Oh, Donna's a lovely girl, just lovely.
She wouldn't know anything about taking drugs.
No more than Eadie would have-- No more than Eadie would.
STEVE: Miss Wales? Maybe.
I tried the front door, nobody answered.
McGarrett, Five-0.
Fuzz.
Fuzz.
Can we talk? What about? Eadie Hastings.
She's dead.
Yes, I know.
Why not let her rest in peace? She was your best friend, wasn't she? Well, maybe that's because we respected each other's privacy.
You did know she was hooked? Hooked? Yeah, she was a user.
( clicks tongue ): Eadie taking drugs? What do you think pushed her off that cliff? Oh, well, you see, I think she jumped to get out of it.
But you're such a rock in this rotten establishment, you couldn't understand that, could you? Yeah, this rotten establishment's really kicked you around.
This is where my family lives.
It's their scene, not mine.
Look, Miss Wales, I'm here for information, information that might help a lot of other kids like Eadie.
Oh, and how would you help them? Would you use the end of a nightstick or the end of a gun barrel? You've been reading too many leaflets.
Have I? Yeah.
There are other ways and all of them better than the way Eadie died, high on speed.
You know, it's funny.
Your best friend is dead and you can help us find out why and how, but you couldn't care less.
That's pretty cool, baby, pretty cool.
( funky jazz theme playing ) David.
Oh, David, I'm frightened.
I need you.
Five minutes after you left her house, she came tearing out of her driveway like you could smell burning rubber clear to Maui.
Headed straight for David Stone's pad.
I ran a check on him, Steve.
Professor David Stone.
Kicked out of a mainland university for turning half the student body on.
All in the interest of science, no doubt.
No doubt.
He was handing out experimental drugs like they were bubble gum.
Was he ever charged? Oh, yeah.
They nailed him but good.
He was allowed to resign from his post for conduct unbecoming a teacher.
Professor David Stone.
Let me break open a couple of eggs for you.
No, thanks.
Coffee? Let's get back to Eadie Hastings, huh? You're not concerned about sharing my meager larder? There's plenty.
Eadie Hastings? Wonderful girl.
Beautiful child.
You knew she was on drugs? I knew she was searching for who she was.
For light, joy, the vision of truth, the central experience.
By turning on and tuning out? Out of the rat race? Sordid little games you people play and call life? Yes, Mr.
McGarrett, dropping out.
Is that what you taught Eadie? There are no teachers in my profession, Mr.
McGarrett, only friendly guides.
Mutual participants in the search for insight.
And you were Eadie's friendly guide, huh? My humble pad, my meager experience are here for anyone who chooses to use them.
That wonderful, beautiful child killed herself.
No, Mr.
McGarrett.
The stinking, rotten society, your establishment, killed her.
She was shot full of speed, her brain so scrambled she thought she could walk on a cloud.
That's not my responsibility.
I told her.
I tell all my children, never take a trip without a guide.
But this time, Eadie took a few too many speed pills, huh? I wouldn't know.
Or maybe she shot it intravenously? I wouldn't know.
And she decided to trip alone.
Is that the way you figure it, professor? Don't try to entrap me, Mr.
McGarrett.
I have no idea how, where, or from whom Eadie got the dosage of speed, acid, or whatever it was that freaked her out.
And for myself, I fortunately reached the central experience without the use of chemicals.
But as a professor of chemistry, you could whip up a batch of acid or speed on a moment's notice? Huh? ( chuckles ) A man would be a fool or a saint to break the law in order that others might catch a glimpse of God.
Is that what Eadie was trying to do up on that ledge? Catch a glimpse of God? I wouldn't know.
But she was one of your children and she stepped off.
Or did you push her, professor? I'm sorry.
I'm truly sorry for what happened.
But there can be detours, roadblocks, unfortunate accidents, even when one is taking the right direction.
Was that Eadie's right direction, You've been a charming and stimulating breakfast companion, Mr.
McGarrett.
And I've truly enjoyed our little philosophical conversation.
But next time, bring a warrant.
I'll do better than that, professor.
I'll bring a pair of handcuffs.
( dramatic theme playing ) Okay, let's run it down.
We've got a prime suspect in Professor David Stone and four possible counts to get him on.
Possession of drugs, manufacture, use on premises, and apprehended in the act of passing.
Problem: How do we get the evidence to nail him? Stone's not in the drug scene for profit, so he wouldn't be manufacturing regularly.
Worse, he's really convinced that stuff is good for the soul.
Not too good on possession either, unless we're awful lucky or he's awful dumb.
I wouldn't bet on that.
That leaves us apprehended in the act of passing, or use on the premises.
DANNY: We've been that route before.
Spot a joint jumping with acid and speed, get a warrant.
You gotta knock on the door before you can use it.
By that time, the evidence has vanished away down the drain.
Usually a way.
Like what, boss? Like maybe we should get somebody on the inside.
MR.
HASTINGS: I'm gonna see him now.
You just can't go in there.
Hold it, mister.
I'm sorry, Mr.
McGarrett.
I told him he couldn't barge in like that.
It's all right, May, it's all right.
I'll take care of it.
You better have a good explanation, Mr.
Hastings.
That's what I'm looking for from you, McGarrett.
Why haven't you found the man who killed my daughter? Your daughter committed suicide.
That's not true, and you know that better than I.
Whoever it was, whoever gave her those drugs, he killed my little girl as sure as if he'd put a gun in-- When are you going to arrest him? When we have enough evidence to present to the prosecuting attorney.
Now, you're playing games with me.
You know who did it.
My little girl is lying out there in a grave while the killer is roaming the streets! I want him behind bars.
I want you to nail him.
I want you to nail him good, so no jury and no lawyer gets him off.
If there is a man, we'll find him and we'll put him behind bars.
But it'll be done legally, Mr.
Hastings, legally.
I don't care how you do it, but you do it and do it soon.
( tense theme playing ) What was your idea about Stone? Well, Danno, you're gonna take up the simple life.
( rock music playing on radio ) Boy.
( panting ) Oh.
Mm.
I love the smell of food cooking over an open fire.
I thought maybe you were gonna complain.
Why should I? You're doing your thing.
Yeah, only sometime the fuzz don't like it.
( chuckles ): Yeah, I know what you mean.
You care for some? I got plenty.
No, I had mine.
I've seen you before.
You come down here often? Yeah.
I've seen you.
I like to come down here when there's nobody around, you know? Well, I hope I didn't spoil it for you.
No.
Hey, do you live in that thing? Sure.
What's your bit? Huh? You know, your thing.
Oh, uh This.
If I get tired of this beach or somebody runs me off, there's always another one.
That's pretty wild.
( giggles ): You're on one big trip.
Yeah.
What's your bit? The sacred weed, marvelous mushroom.
( giggles ) Oh, I don't think you're with me, baby.
Well, everybody's entitled to their own choice.
Choose me.
Hey, Zero.
I'd invite you to stay, but I got company.
Oh, there's a ball tonight.
You're kidding.
Where? At the prof's pad.
Oh, that's great.
When? Any time you can get there.
You want me to wait? No, no.
I'm gonna bring my company.
That him? DONNA: Yeah, yeah.
Enjoy, sugar, enjoy.
Yeah.
Danny.
Danny, the heat's off.
Are you ready to let it happen? Sure, baby.
Let's let it happen.
( giggles ) Okay.
Wait.
( laughs ) Steve? She's taking me inside.
( giggling ) Carry me.
Carry me the rest of the way.
Okay.
( sighs ) ( laughing ) ( eerie theme playing ) David? David? David? David? Where are you, David? David, I need you.
( sobbing ) I need you.
Looks like your buddy flew the coop, huh? Get out of here.
Split, leave me alone.
( quietly ): David, I need you.
Come on, I'll take you home.
( dramatic theme playing ) David? ( giggles ) Why? You tell me why you brought the fuzz to my house.
What-- What fuzz? The day after Eadie killed herself, Five-0 checked out some of her friends.
And one of those stalwarts paid a visit to Zero.
Now, who do you suppose that was? Danny? You know it, baby.
I didn't know it, David.
I swear to you, I didn't know it.
I've told you 1,000 times how careful we must be.
Yes, I-I know, he just-- He just seemed so nice and so sweet.
They're trying to destroy us by any means.
I know.
I won't make this mistake again, David, you'll see.
I'll never make this mistake again.
Please believe me, I won't.
Good, baby.
( ominous theme playing ) David.
( chuckles ) Now, you're going to have to learn, Donna.
You're going to learn the difference between the insight I've given you and just turning on for kicks.
And the way to learn that is to experience your trip all alone.
Oh, no, David.
David, I- I-- I couldn't do th-- That.
Please, I can't do it alone.
I-- I need you.
I need you to show me all the beautiful things.
David, please.
I-- I have to do it together with you.
Please, David, it's my whole life.
I'd be too frightened.
Now you have to know that.
( cries ) You're going to know that.
No, David.
Please don't leave me.
Don't make me do it alone, David.
David.
David.
Don't leave me.
( cries ) David.
( upbeat theme playing ) ( breathing heavily ) ( laughs ) ( mellow, exotic theme playing ) Where am I? Where am I? ( whimpers ) David? ( cries, screams ) David, don't leave me! ( cries ) Please let me go.
Don't keep me in here.
Let me go! I don't wanna be here.
There you go.
There you go.
I don't wanna be-- I don't want to.
I wanna go! I don't wanna-- I don't-- David, please, please.
My God, please.
I don't-- ( whimpers ) ( whimpers) It's all right, Donna.
It's all right.
Hello, Donna.
You.
Get out of here and leave me alone.
Speed usually ends you up something like this, and it's my job to try to stop this from happening.
You were really turned on, young lady.
It's a wonder you didn't kill yourself.
( laughs ) Well, must have been quite a scene.
Who gave you the speed pills? David Stone? Huh? Could--? Could I have a cigarette, please? Where am I? You're in a hospital ward for acidheads, speed trippers.
Who? They're the lucky ones.
We got to them before they stepped out in the middle of traffic or set fire to themselves.
Or tried to reach God by jumping off a cliff.
This speed gets you there pretty fast, doesn't it, Donna? Only one thing you gotta remember: You may never come home again.
Oh-- Oh, no.
Not me, baby.
Guided tours for me from now on.
Doc.
Harriet, you went on a guided trip.
Tell this young lady, was it a worthwhile experience? Stop it! That's cruel.
She's been here for six months.
We can't get through to her.
Could I please go now? There's someone here who went to the university about the same time you did.
Lives out in the Kahala district.
I have a hunch you might know her.
Oh! Oh, my God.
It-- It's Rachel.
DONNA: Her parents said they sent her back to the mainland to go to school there.
DANNY: She went on a trip, all right.
Great while it lasted.
Maybe somebody was holding her hand all along the way.
Donna.
If someone like you had helped us months ago, Eadie and a lot of other Eadies might have been saved.
This girl would really be going to school instead of living like a vegetable in a mental hospital.
( phone rings ) Hello? Yes, David.
Yes, it was a very bad trip, David.
I've learned my lesson.
I.
.
I need you.
Tonight? No.
No, I wasn't hesitating.
Yeah, I'll be there.
Right.
Peace.
( dramatic theme playing ) ( dialling ) Mr.
McGarrett, please.
Look, that's not funny.
I agree with you.
Killing somebody isn't funny.
If you're troubled or sick, maybe I can help you.
You helped Eadie? Eadie? I'm her father.
Now, look, what happened, I can understand how you must feel.
You can understand? You who turned Eadie into an animal.
My wife found that among Eadie's things when she was going through her clothing.
Read it, from anywhere.
It's all full of the filth you taught her.
Now, read it.
"Another glorious trip with my beloved David Stone.
" Well, read it! "Time stops while I learn the meaning of love "and we become one.
I and thou--" That's enough.
"To my beloved guru, David Stone, in whose arms" It wasn't difficult to find you.
It was like Eadie, from her grave, was showing me the way.
And while she was alive, did you show her the way? What do you mean by that? Did you help her? Give her love, faith, a reason to survive? Or were you blind to her needs? Deaf to her cry for help? Unknowing and uncaring that she wanted out, but that she had no one to turn to? Shut up! So she killed herself.
I rubbed myself raw, stripped my soul naked to give that beautiful, beautiful child a reason to go on.
But she was only my friend.
You're a liar.
All right, maybe I failed her.
Maybe.
But where were you when she went up the wall? I told you to shut up! Shut up! I want some of that stuff you gave to Eadie.
All right.
You want to turn on? We'll both turn on.
And learn to love rather than kill one another.
Like acid, like Benzedrine, mescaline, and like nothing in this world.
Not on this cold, rotten sphere anyway.
Go on, put away the gun.
Find love, peace.
Me? Take one of those? Turn myself into an animal without mind or soul or will? Me? You.
No, look, I don't need these.
Take one.
I'm gonna count to three.
One, two-- All right.
Satisfied? You could leave now.
It's gonna take some time.
Another! No, don't be stupid.
I said, another.
Look, half this dosage taken IV, intraven-- Again! Another.
Take it! Again.
Again! Again, again, again! ( suspenseful theme playing ) ( psychedelic rock theme playing ) ( tires screech ) ( all chiming ) David? What--? What happened? ( breathing heavily ) I'm I'm so tired.
I'm so tired.
Help me.
Oh, I'll help you, David.
It'll be all right.
It'll go away.
I'll stay right here until it does.
Shh.
( women laughing ) ( cackling ) Stop it.
Why are you laughing at me? Stop laughing at me.
Stop it! I'm not laughing at you, David.
Stop it! Please, stop it! ( muffled scream ) There.
Now, that's better.
Laughter should be beautiful.
You make it ugly.
I'm sorry, David.
It's the dome of many colored glass, staining the white radiance of eternity.
Until death tramples it into fragments.
Did you find what you were looking for? She's gone.
Eadie? Eadie? Eadie, wait! ( sirens blaring ) ( tires screech ) Donna, you all right? Yes.
Where is he? Out at the end.
He's out there on the cliff where-- Where E-- Eadie What happened? I I don't know.
He-- He dragged me out-- Out to the cliff with him.
And then-- And then he looked at me, and he-- And he suddenly seemed to change.
He kept-- He kept saying-- He kept saying, "You're not Eadie, you're not Eadie", and-- And then he let me go, and He's just out of it.
He wants to die out there.
He still has the gun, Steve.
He has a choice.
He can blow your brains out or take you with him.
Well, it comes with the territory.
He ain't worth it, Steve.
Look, we're cops, not judges.
If we got a jumper, our job is to get him back.
Stone? McGarrett? Let's talk.
Yes.
I have much to tell you.
Good.
Latch on.
No.
Why? Don't.
Whatever you say.
I'm going to die.
McGARRETT: We all are.
I'm going now.
McGARRETT: Why? Why, Stone? Tell me.
You're the teacher.
You just said you had much to tell me.
Consider, McGarrett, the two greatest adventures of mortal man: Being born and dying.
And having experienced the first, I long now for the second, and, I believe, greater of the two adventures.
Death.
For me, only one great adventure remains.
McGARRETT: Stone! Give me the gun.
Give me that gun.
No! Ah! McGARRETT: Danno.
Come on.
Okay, come on.
( upbeat surf theme playing )
