Heartland (CA) s09e10 Episode Script

Darkness Before Dawn

Previously on "Heartland" There's a rumour going around that a bunch of the older girls are driving to Jasper for the weekend.
Dad said I could go, so I'm going.
There is no way he would've said yes if you'd told him the real story.
So it had nothing to do with possums whatsoever? No, contaminated water.
I found traces of a pesticide at Weber's Creek.
I am so sorry.
I took Rusty for a ride, I let him drink from the creek.
I had no idea.
(Phoenix grunts and breathes hard) You know what? I don't wanna go on the stupid girl's trip with you and Katie anymore.
The last thing I wanna do is spend any time with you.
Now, she has been gone since this morning, so we can't sit around and wait.
We need to call the hospitals and Lou, we-we have to report her missing.
This can't be happening.
(Dramatic music) (Crickets chirp, owl hoots) Constable Radkey: I see Georgina has a history of running away.
Yes, when she was a foster child, but not for years.
Not since we adopted her.
But it is her usual mode of dealing with things when she's angry or upset.
Is that right? Uh, your father was saying that you're in the process of a separation from your husband.
Peter Morris.
- Is it amicable? - Yes, it is.
There's no chance that Georgie's father would take custody into his own hands? Peter would never just take one of the children, if that's what you're suggesting.
I have to ask.
It sometimes is a possibility.
So have you been in contact with Georgie's father? I've tried to.
But you weren't successful? Not yet.
You were saying that, uh, you got into a disagreement with Georgie in the days before she went missing? I wouldn't let her go on a trip with some older girls on a team she's part of and she was she was furious with me.
Is it possible she went on the trip anyway? The trip was canceled.
Is that your daughter's phone? Yes.
Um I've been texting Sam, the girl who had originally planned the trip.
But Sam said she didn't see Georgie at school today.
I'm gonna need you to send me a list of the names of all Georgie's friends and her teammates.
And, uh, just a question, do you monitor your daughter's on-line activity? Uh n-no.
I Then we'll also need her computer.
Just to check any, uh, communications she may have had.
We'll do everything possible, Mrs.
Morris.
Try not to worry.
(Boat horn Bellows, Siren wails in the distance) (Rhythmic drumming, Traffic rumbles) Man: Some change? (Traffic rumbles) (Low hum of chatter, Horns honk) (Traffic zooms by, Bicycle rattles by) (Cars rumble) (Loud buzz of chatter) (Low hum of chatter, Truck rumbles) (Siren wails in the distance) (Horn blasts) (Car rumbles, tires squeal) (Car idles, horns honk) (Shopping cart squeaks) (Door opens) Cabbie: Where to? It's gonna be all right.
Georgie's tough.
Come here.
(Sniffling) (Taxi engine rumbles to a stop) (Picture rustles) (Dispatcher speaks over radio) (Money rustles) (Cab rumbles away) (Door rattles) No.
Directory Assistance: Directory an individual's name.
(Buttons click, Phone rings on other end) (Broom swishes) Hey! (Banging on window) Hey! Excuse me! (Buttons click, Phone rings on other end) Hey, look out! (Gasps) (Skateboard thumps on pavement) (Bag thunks) S09E10 Darkness Before Dawn And at the break of day you sank into your dream You dreamer Oh, oh, oh, oh You dreamer You dreamer (Birds chirp) Lou: Peter! Where are you? I need to talk to you, okay?! (Door thunks shut) Georgie is missing.
Do you understand? I have literally been looking for her all night.
And I need you to call me! I need you here! (Phone beeps off, thumps on bed) (Keys clatter) Where were you? I woke up and you were gone.
Driving around.
Anything was better than laying in bed just thinking.
I thought she might be at the Dude Ranch, or the arena, or Maggie's, but - Lou - And where's Peter? You know? I have been calling his cell, I've been calling him at home, and he hasn't answered the phone all night! Why isn't he home in the middle of the night, Amy? Just breathe! We'll figure this out.
I mean maybe maybe his phone is broken or maybe he lost it! I mean, he-he-he he could've lost it, right? Maybe.
Um have you- have you tried his office? Yeah, I did.
I left a message, even though it's Saturday, and, I mean, but he does work some weekends, But it's too early for him to be there.
I think.
But I don't know, Amy, I don't I don't know anything at this point because nobody is telling me anything! You remember what the police officer said, right? Look, Georgie runs away when she's stressed out.
So she probably just needed to blow off some steam.
Look, she's a smart girl, okay? She's gonna be fine.
But Amy I can't stop thinking what if she didn't run away? What if somebody has her? Lou don't think like that.
Hey (Door shuts) Hi Why didn't you call me earlier? I could have been here in a second.
- Have you heard anything? - No, I haven't.
- How's Lou doing? - Not too good.
Oh, honey (Light kiss) I'm glad you're here.
(Birds chirp outside) No news? No.
(Sighs) I just got back from the reserve.
I figured maybe Georgie would go and hide out there, but I scoured the whole place and there's no sign of her.
I'm trying so hard to be strong for Lou.
But Georgie's been gone since yesterday morning.
She's been gone a whole day.
Look let's just focus on what we have to do here, okay? We've got the horses to water and feed, and we've gotta check on Rusty, see how's he's doing.
- Yeah.
- Okay? (Sighs) Look, if there's anything we can do to help, we will, Amy.
Right now, let's just keep busy, okay? (Seagulls cry) (Cars rumble) (Cars honk in the distance) (Paper bundle thumps loudly) (Doors rattle) Come on! (Sighs) My backpack.
(Dialing beeps) (Phone rings) (Elevator dings inside) (Approaching heels clack) (Sighs, chuckles) (Door clicks shut) (Button clicks) (Button clicks) Why aren't you moving?! (Sighs, frustrated) (Sighs heavily) There you go, bud.
(Heavy pats) His breathing's a lot better.
That's a good sign.
It looks like he ate all the oats I gave him last night.
All right! It's all good.
I called Caleb.
He's gonna come by later.
I'm gonna show him how to do the injections so he can take Rusty home.
Have you told him yet? About Georgie? I will tell him, when he gets here.
Okay.
(Raspy breathing) Amy! I think we got another one.
Oh no (Sighs heavily) (Dog barks) Here, boy.
It's okay.
(Dog barks) Can I help you, young lady? Who are you and why are you in my lobby? Well actually, I'm here to see my dad he lives here - Peter Morris.
I'm Georgie Fleming Morris.
Mr.
Morris mentioned that he has two daughters.
Oh.
Good.
Jeff Saunders.
I'm the Concierge here.
I'll give your father a call and let him know you're here.
I've tried calling him a lot, but he hasn't answered.
Maybe I'm dialing it wrong or something, but he should be here.
I don't know where he is.
Well, he's not answering.
(Phone beeps off) I'm sorry.
He must have stepped out.
Well, you can let me in, right? I'm supposed to meet him.
Well, if he's not here to come and get you, I'll need to see some ID.
Condo rules.
ID? Something with your name Better still, your photo as well.
Uh, well, I don't think I have any ID.
Someone took my knapsack.
I lost everything - my wallet, all my stuff.
Right out there.
I was sleeping.
You slept on my front steps? (Photo rustles) This is my dad, I swear.
I'm not lying to you.
The photo will be just fine.
Let's go.
(Door clicks open) Just so you know, you will need a security fob to use the elevator or to exit the building.
You'll be locked out without it, so I'll attempt to find you one.
Um, actually, I'll be okay.
I'm just gonna wait for my dad.
All right.
If you need anything, press 21 on the phone.
That's the concierge extension.
- Okay.
Thank you.
- Okay.
(Door thumps shut, lock clicks) (Siren wails in the distance) (Gate creaks shut) Yes, I did.
I took Phoenix for a ride yesterday morning.
He was weaving in his stall so I figured I'd give him some exercise.
Where'd you go? Oh I my mind's not exactly on this right now.
I know, Grandpa.
This is important.
Did you happen to go anywhere near Weber's Creek by any chance? Well, yeah, actually.
(Dialing beeps) Peter's Voicemail: Hi, you've reached Peter Morris.
I'm not here right now so leave a message.
(Beep) Hi, Dad.
It's Georgie.
I'm at your apartment.
I couldn't get in at first, but I'm here now.
And Dad, someone stole my knapsack.
I need you to call me.
I don't have my cell, so call me on the phone at your apartment.
I need you to come home.
Please! (Phone beeps off) (Phone rings) Phone: Call from Lou.
(Phone continues ringing) Peter, please pick up the phone.
Please Peter's Voicemail: Hi, you've reached Peter Morris.
I'm not here right now so leave a message.
Peter, Hi.
It's, uh, Saturday morning.
Where are you? Um, call me on the landline or my, my cell.
Why aren't you calling me back? (Phone beeps off) He's not there.
There's no answer at his office either, because it's Saturday, so obviously no one's there.
I mean, even if he was there, there'd be no one at reception.
So of course there wasn't any answer.
Lisa, I'm going crazy here.
Hey, hey, come on, sit down.
Sit, honey.
(Door thumps shut) - Tim: Hey.
- Hey.
I was at the, uh, police station.
What did-What did they say? Did they tell you anything? Well, I I spoke to Officer Radkey.
She said they're going through Georgie's computer and Th-that's all I know.
What's wrong, Mommy? Where's Georgie? Hey, honey, you know what? I think we should make your mom a really nice piece of toast.
What do you think? And we can put some of that jam we found at the market the other day on it.
What do you think? - Okay.
Can I have some too? - Yes, absolutely! - And some tea? - Yeah, you don't drink tea! Yes, I do! (Fridge door opens) (Carton rattles) (Door shuts) (Spoon clacks against bowl) (Spoon scrapes) (Phone rings) Phone: Call from Lou.
(Phone rings) Phone: Call from Lou.
Hi, Dad, it's Georgie.
You're away I think, but I need you to call me! I don't have my cell, so please call me on your apartment phone.
I'm waiting for you.
Please! (Heavy sigh) (Phone beeps off) (Phone thumps on counter) (Sighs) (Knock at the door) (Siren wails in the distance) (Door clicks open) Sorry to disturb you, Georgina.
- Georgie.
- Georgie.
I just spoke with the concierge on duty during the week, Apparently Mr.
Morris told him just last Thursday that he'd be away for a few days on vacation.
I just thought you should know.
Just a shame that you're here and he isn't.
Must have been some confusion, miscommunication.
I don't like to think you're here alone.
Is there someone that you'd like me to call for you? Uh, your mother? Uh, no.
No, I'm I'm fine.
You're sure? Uh, yeah.
My-my dad knew I was coming.
I just got off the phone with him, actually.
He's on his way back.
- He is? - Yeah.
You're right.
It was just a complete miscommunication.
I'll wait for him here.
All right then.
As long as you're sure.
I'm sure.
Thank you, Jeff.
(Door clicks shut) Trudie, I'm so sorry to bother you again, but if you can think of anything else that-that Georgie might've said or, or someone she might've met or anything at all, please ask the other girls.
Give me a call.
(Door bangs shut) (Phone beeps off) - Hey - Hey.
I guess you know, but, uh Dad was talking to the police again.
Yeah, he told me.
They are gonna check all of the train and bus stations, and the airport.
They're being really thorough, Lou, and they're pretty positive.
This is this is a huge priority for them.
This is all my fault, Amy.
We had a terrible fight and I I yelled and I said things I shouldn't have said, and what kind of a mother am I? The worst.
Lou No wonder she ran away.
You know, at least I hope she ran away.
I hope I hope nothing else happened to her.
(Sniffs) You know why the police took her computer, right? What if she was talking to somebody.
I mean, what if she was talking to some stranger on the internet.
No! No, Georgie Georgie would never do that! Maybe not intentionally, but she acts like she's got it all together, but, Amy, she's a child.
And I'm supposed to protect her.
(Sobbing) I can't stand this, Amy.
I gotta do something.
I can't stand this anymore.
(Sniffling) (Change clatters) (Dialing beeps) (Phone rings) (Sighs) Come on, come on.
(Running footsteps) (Phone beeps on) Hello? Hello? Mom? (Crying) Mom? Georgie! Honey, are you okay? Where are you?! (Sobbing) Oh, sweetheart! Just calm down and talk to me.
Honey, it's okay.
It's all okay.
Just don't cry, honey! (Sobbing) Okay.
No, sweetie, don't cry, please.
Just tell me where you are.
I'm I'm at Dad's.
Oh! Thank God (Crying) She's at Peter's! But he's not here! - Well, where is he? - I don't know! I've been trying to get in touch with him too! And someone stole my knapsack so I lost all my money, and there's no food anywhere! Dad has no food, and I don't know what to do.
(Crying) I am so, so sorry.
'Kay, calm down, Georgie, calm down.
- What's going on? - We'll figure this out, okay? Georgie's at Peter's in Vancouver.
(Crying) I'm so, so sorry.
It's okay, honey.
It's all okay.
You're gonna be fine, and I'm gonna be on the first flight there and I'm gonna be there before you know it, okay? - (Sighs) Okay.
- Don't leave the apartment.
Promise me.
Just stay where you are, okay? (Sniffling) Okay.
Yeah, I promise.
Please hurry.
All right, I'll see you soon.
- Okay.
I love you.
- Oh, I love you.
Bye, honey.
(Phone beeps off) (Sighs) She's safe.
She's at Peter's.
- She's fine.
Oh - All right, okay.
Well, that's that's, that's news.
- (Crying) I was so scared.
- Such good news, honey.
Okay, well, where the hell is Peter? I don't know.
I need to get on a flight.
I need to I will book you one.
Where's your computer? - In my room.
- We'll drive you to the airport.
No, no, no.
I'm just-I'm gonna go, I'm gonna drive myself and leave my car at the airport.
You shouldn't drive.
You shouldn't, honey.
You're in no condition.
I'm driving! I'm finally able to do something! (Shaky sigh) I'm gonna call the police.
(Birds chirp, wind blows lightly) So she's been gone since yesterday? I mean, why didn't anybody tell me? I c-could've started a search party or something.
Well, the police were handling it, Caleb.
Yeah, that was the worst part; there was really nothing we could do.
But she's fine, right? I mean, you're sure? Yeah.
Lou's on her way to the airport.
Crazy kid.
- (Sighs) Life.
- Ty: Mm.
You just never know what it's gonna throw at you? I mean, look at Rusty and Phoenix.
Some idiot spreading poison.
Yeah.
The good news is that Rusty is much better.
You know, the injections are, are really working.
Yeah, he uh seems pretty much back to his old self.
Thank you.
You guys have been amazing.
I don't know how you cope with all this.
How's Phoenix? He's not doing too good.
He's worse off than Rusty was and he's not responding quickly to the treatments, so we're just standing by right now.
- Jack: Caleb.
- Caleb: Jack.
So Ty, I want to see where that poison got into the water.
If someone dumped it, we need to get to the bottom of it.
I should be actually staying here with Phoenix though.
I get that you and Amy are tied up here, so just give me directions and I'll do a little investigation.
Oh, I'm coming with you.
Whoever did this nearly killed my horse.
Lou called.
She made her flight.
They just took off.
- Good.
That's good.
- Yeah, yeah.
How you doin'? You okay? No.
I'm a basket case.
I'm not gonna be able to relax until we know that she's in Vancouver, so I-I gotta stay busy.
Well, we've got another problem that's gonna keeps us all busy, so go saddle up.
Well Here, take that too.
(Loud thunk) (Birds chirp, creek flows) Right there.
(Water splashes) You comin'? (Water splashes) (Groans) (Buddy grunts) (Birds chirp, creek flows) (Traffic rumbles, horns honk) (Door opens) This way, Mrs.
Morris.
Good to see you again.
Thank you.
I am so sorry.
If I had only known I would have contacted you immediately.
- But your daughter was so confident.
- No.
So sure of herself, nothing seemed amiss.
Jeff, this isn't your fault.
She told me that Mr.
Morris wa-was on his way.
Look, I know, I just (Door rumbles open) - I need to get to my daughter.
- Of course.
(Door rumbles shut) (Key's jingle, door clicks open) (Crying) I'm so sorry.
You're safe.
That's all that matters.
(Sniffs) That's all that matters.
(Light kiss) (Relieved sigh) I don't see any sign of contaminate in that water.
Yeah.
The stream looks pretty clear.
I guess the guy wasn't much into recycling.
(Bag rustles) (Items clatter) Hey, Jack? (Metallic scrape) Here's the source.
Potato beetle pesticide.
See, that that stuff has been banned for years.
Yeah, and somebody must have hung onto it and finally dumped it here.
It's all leeching into the stream.
This is Provincial Park land.
Nobody lives up here.
Somebody just figured it was his own private dumping ground.
Well, let's find out who that idiot is.
Well, how are we gonna do that? Let's get our hands dirty, boys.
Like, uh, looking for evidence? Yeah.
Just like that, Caleb.
You get to be a detective.
(Objects clatter, water drips) I'm really sorry.
I should've told you.
I I really messed up.
Yeah.
You did.
Everyone was in a complete panic.
Why did you do it, Georgie? I want to know.
I don't know.
All of a sudden, I just felt kinda trapped.
Trapped? Like if I didn't run, I wouldn't get out.
- Why? - I don't know.
Sometimes I feel that way for no reason.
Especially when I'm angry.
I just feel like I need to escape.
Okay.
Maybe we should talk about that.
You know, try to figure it out.
And listen, I'm sorry that I went as far as I did.
I guess that's what I do when I get angry.
And I'm sorry that those girls all blame you.
That's pretty much my fault.
No, it wasn't.
You had to call Trudie.
That's what moms do.
You're suppose to.
I guess.
But listen, Georgie, we're a family, okay? So don't ever do this again.
You have to promise.
You know what? Even if you're angry or if we're both really angry, you can't just run.
You can't just disappear like that 'cause I have never been so terrified in my entire life.
Do you understand? Do you promise me? Say it.
I promise.
I was pretty terrified too, especially when my knapsack was stolen.
Okay, I don't really need or want to hear anymore about that right now.
You can tell me all the gritty details later.
I think you and I could use a little time before we head back.
What do you say? We could go for a walk by the ocean, grab some sushi.
Just me and you.
Okay.
(Key rattles in door) Peter! Honey, are you back? Hi, I'm Sylvia Pratt.
Sylvia You must be Lou.
And of course, Georgie.
Um I feel like I I mean, Peter never stops talking about you.
Both of you.
When you came in, you asked if Peter was "back"? Does that mean he's away? Yes.
Uh, he went sailing for a couple of days with some buddies.
Oh.
I'm just here to, you know, water the plants.
So that must explain why you have a key to my husband's apartment.
There aren't any plants here.
You're right, Georgie.
There aren't.
Well, um I'm sure Peter will be home quite soon, so I should get going.
I hope you have a nice visit.
It was lovely to meet you both.
(Heels clack, door clicks open) (Door thumps shut) I don't think we need to spend any more time here, do you? Let's hop on a flight back home.
(Horns honk outside) (Bag and coats rustle) (Keys jingle) (Door opens and thumps shut) (Bags rustle, items inside clatter) Ugh! Hey.
Hey, hey.
This is it.
Same address, same name.
Archie Buchanan.
Yeah.
Yeah, look at that.
That could be our guy.
(Hooves thud) Scott, he's not responding like he should.
Are there any other treatments that I should be trying, you know? He can't eat or-or drink.
He can't even swallow.
Yeah, I got him on fluids.
Okay.
(Phone beeps off) (Heavy shallow breaths) (Hooves thud, horses grunt and snort) (Door opens) (Horse grunts) Is there a problem? There might be a big problem, yeah.
Are you Archie Buchanan? Yeah.
So? You grow potatoes, Archie? Best in the area.
Well, Archie, we found some of your old mail at your personal dump site up at Weber's Creek.
That's your name and address, right? I don't know what you're talking about.
How 'bout now? Ring a bell? (Canister clatters) Never saw that before.
What is it? That's a pesticide.
It's been banned for years.
But then again, I guess some people keep using it.
Oh, it must work really well on those pesky potato bugs, right, Jack? Say, you mind if I have look around? I want you off my property now! Go ahead, Caleb.
I'll call the cops! (Struggling Grunt) If you call the cops, okay, We'll just take them straight to your personal dump site and we'll show them that poison (Canister clatters) that you've been putting into that Creek for God knows how long! That's poisoned two of our horses, one of whom is still fighting for his life.
- (Hard thump) Ow! - Call the cops.
Call the cops.
So if I were you, I'd head down to that Creek right about now and start cleaning up that mess of yours before you make anymore animals sick.
And now, I mean, we know where you live It'd be a real shame to have to come back here for another visit, 'cause we'll be checking.
You recognize it? There's about a dozen more in your back shed.
(Canister clatters) (Grunt of effort) (Grunts in pain) That's for nearly killing one of my horses.
(Coughing) (SUV Rumbles) (Doors click open, bang shut) Oh, Georgie! I'm so glad to see you.
You - Hey.
- Hey.
I'm sorry I put you guys through that.
What's wrong? Phoenix is sick, Georgie.
He's not doing well.
Well, what's wrong? Where is he? Okay.
Hi, Phoenix.
Hi, baby.
It's okay.
Come here, you gotta get better.
You gotta get better, buddy.
Come on, you gotta drink this.
Come on.
(Drinking) Good boy.
Good boy.
Ty, he's doing it.
- Good.
- He's drinking.
Keep trying, Georgie, okay? His breathing's easing up.
He can tell you're back, Georgie.
He's feeling better already.
(Drinking) Well, how's he doing? He's definitely improving.
(Drinking and swallowing) Uh, Georgie, could I have a minute? Yeah, sure.
Good boy.
(Sighs) Phoenix never would've gotten sick if I hadn't run away.
I know that, and I'm really, really sorry.
It was a stupid thing to do.
You're right.
It was a stupid thing to do.
But you should know that I'm the one who let that guy drink out of that creek.
And I should've been more in touch with what Amy and Ty were coping with, with Rusty.
No, this is not your fault at all.
Well, maybe it was, maybe it wasn't, but it doesn't matter now.
And Georgie, I'm only gonna say this once.
I hope you never put any of us through something like this again.
Ever.
- I won't.
I - I'm not finished.
Now, I don't know what goes on in that mind of yours sometimes or what kinda stuff you dredge up from your past, but I think it's high time you figured out once and for all, that your running days are over, young lady.
You're too old for that kinda crap.
You understand me? (Birds chirp) I'm sorry, Jack.
(Birds chirp) (Sniffling) (Crickets chirp) (Music plays) Hey, who needs power? (Chuckles) (Ty groans, Amy sighs) And none of what you said was true - Poor Lou.
- Yeah.
What a thing to have to go through.
I don't know what I would do if Georgie was my daughter.
I don't know what I would do if Peter was my husband.
Well, he was away, Amy.
Yeah, but he could've at least called, you know? He could've let her know.
She was trying to reach him, Ty.
- He wasn't there for her.
- Mm.
Well, I'll be there for you.
You'd better.
(Chuckling) - I love you.
- I love you, too.
(Gate latch clanks) His fever's gone down and his breathing's getting a lot better.
That's great.
(Gate latch clanks) You didn't have to come out here though.
Are you kidding me? I am not letting you out of my sight.
Has Peter called? Wherever he is, he mustn't have reception.
He would have, Georgie, if he could.
I know it.
I changed my mind.
I wanna come with you and Katie on that trip if that's still okay.
It's more than okay.
Just me and my girls.
(Door clicks open) Georgie?! (Keys clatter) Georgie, honey, are you here? (Door shuts) Georgie! I don't wanna daydream I don't wanna wait for you Hey, Lou, it's-it's Peter! Uh, I got all your messages.
I am sorry.
I-I was I was away sailing and my phone didn't get any service! Um was Georgie here in my apartment? Because she's not here now! So, um I don't know what's going on and I really need to know that she's okay.
So can you-can you just call me back? Please? Uh, where are you? Call me, okay? Thanks.
Don't leave me in the ashes of your memory Don't leave me in the ashes of your memory Don't leave me in the ashes of your memory [grunts.]
Is there any coffee left? Jack snores, so.
I know.
