Homicide: Life on the Street s03e12 Episode Script

The City That Bleeds

First murder and I end up in the same neighbourhood I worked in Narcotics.
- You expected more glamour? - Sure.
How about a contessa who kills her rich husband in Guilford? Thought at least I'd get a little change of scenery.
Gripe, mope and complain, that always was your MO.
Lieutenant Russert.
We don't see you on the street much.
Doctor Dyer, this is Detective Jones.
He's just starting on my shift.
- Thought I'd keep him company.
- She's babysitting the rookie.
Hi.
Looks like he's on the wrong end of a.
45.
Eight shots.
Two to the back, two to the arm, four through the legs and hips.
This neighbourhood, gotta be drug related.
- Got a witness for you.
- Get off me.
Lenny! What did you see? What's up? You working homicide now? Yeah, aren't you lucky? I don't care about that stash you got in your jacket.
You gonna help me out, my first day on the job and all, in front of my lieutenant? I didn't see the kid get shot but his name's Samuel Hollis.
- That's the victim's name? - Yeah, he was selling burn bags.
You know, baking soda? Told that fool it'd get him killed.
You know who might have killed him? This doesn't look good.
Too many people round here know me.
Give me a name and you can go, or I gotta drag your butt downtown.
All right.
Jason Pauley.
He chills with his lady down on Dupont.
- Jason Pauley, that's the shooter? - Look, I don't know about that, - but he was there.
Can I leave now? - Yeah, you can go.
Thought you said this was gonna be hard.
Beginner's luck, OK? And you have not put this case down yet, so quit grinning at me.
Son-of-a Oh! You're Maria Delgado, Channel 8 News, right? - Yeah, that's me.
- I'm Detective Bayliss, - Frank Pembleton's partner.
- Yeah.
- Can I ask you a question? - Shoot.
What are you doing? This story about Wade, you created it out of nothing, you're implying that there's a big scandal.
You're ruining someone's life! When did your job description change - from reporting news to making it up? - It's possible that Wade lied.
That is a crime! It's also possible that high-ranking police officials tried to cover up the fact that he lied and that is news! Not to mention the most intriguing question, why would the congressman make up such a bizarre story in the first place? Let's go! - I'm just doing my job, Detective.
- Yeah, really! - Does that answer your question? - Yeah! That does! Glad I could help.
Let me make sure I have the details straight, Commissioner.
Congressman Wade called you and reported that he'd been kidnapped? That's right, and I asked Frank Pembleton to investigate.
- And? - Well, Frank found nothing.
- There was no kidnapping.
- If Wade filed a report saying there had been a kidnapping, but actually there wasn't one, then he committed a crime.
Why wasn't he charged? I don't know.
Maybe Frank thought it unnecessary to charge him.
- He was acting under your orders.
- I would never sanction any deal to protect a politician.
Frank perhaps misunderstood me.
The press is having a field day with this.
I'm getting pressure to put Wade on trial, the sooner the better.
Assuming Wade waives a jury, we could be before a judge tomorrow.
- Pembleton must take the stand.
- Is that necessary? - He's the heart of my case.
- Pembleton's a loose cannon right now.
Who knows what he'll say on the stand? He'll tell the truth! Is that what you're afraid of? - I need to talk to him.
Where is he? - I don't know, Maggie.
He turned in his badge.
As of last night Frank Pembleton is no longer one of my detectives.
I won't be home till after eight.
There's a cocktail reception.
- Oh.
- Bob will kill me if I don't go.
What do you want for dinner? I was thinking pasta.
OK.
Sure.
- Do you want something else? - No, pasta's great.
I love pasta.
- What are you doing? - Rinsing them before putting them in.
Honey, that's a brand-new dishwasher.
If you don't rinse them, it leaves a film.
- A film? - Yeah, a film.
I never rinsed the dishes before.
I never noticed any film.
So, pasta's OK for dinner? You know, maybe I should just grab something at the reception.
You don't want me to cook.
- All right, I'll be home.
I gotta go.
- OK.
- I'll miss my train! - Would you rather have chicken? - Chicken is fine too! - Yeah.
Oh, how about steak? Or fish? A nice swordfish.
- Frank - Tell me what you want, I'll make it.
I just need to know what you'd like for dinner It's not difficult.
- OK Let's have chicken.
- Chicken.
Good choice.
- Bye! - Bye! See you, sweetie! Bowling, the only sport where you get to put on someone else's sweaty shoes.
Come on! They put some spray in there, or something.
That's my husband, a real eye for detail! Now, Natalie, if you'd seen me work this case last night, you would've been dazzled.
Tell her, Russert.
- He got lucky.
- Yeah! You won't say that - when I break down Jason Pauley.
- Yeah.
I haven't gone bowling since I don't know when, probably the last time the four of us went.
- Now Mike, there was a pro.
- Mike! Remember my 30th birthday, - what he had the gall to get me? - Your own personalised bowling ball.
- Oh! He thought it would make me love the sport.
A bowling ball! The guy was an original romantic.
Like me, right, honey? This from the man who gave me a lawnmower for my birthday.
- You didn't? - Simplicity Landlord series, of a mower you own! I wanna thank you for putting Doug on Homicide.
Well, he's a great detective.
I'm lucky to have him.
It's wonderful to see him happy.
I'm sure this'll put him back on his feet.
Strike or gutter ball.
That's all I want.
What did Mike used to say? "Go big or don't go.
" Go big or don't go! Go big or don't go! Go big or don't go! Oh, God! Yeah, Bayliss, Homicide.
Uh-huh.
Yeah, yeah, go ahead All right We'll, er I'll be right over.
OK? Bye.
- Gee, got a minute? - Come in.
We have a murdered college co-ed found in her apartment stabbed.
Uh-huh.
I don't have a partner.
What shall I do? Take Lewis.
He doesn't have a partner either.
- I don't think we'd work well together.
- You're partners in that bar.
You could be partners on a case.
Listen, Friday night, you gonna come to the opening? I'll try.
- What kind of doughnut is that? - It's a jelly doughnut.
I didn't know we had jelly doughnuts today.
I think Pembleton is getting a raw deal with this Wade business.
Nobody forced him to turn in his badge.
We gotta get him back, gotta do something to get him back.
- You gotta do something! - Well, what? - Go to his house? Beg him to return? - Would you? Get Lewis and close this murder case fast! Yes, sir.
- Lewis, you're my partner for today.
- Says who? Says Gee.
- Ah! - I guess you're the primary? - Yes, I am.
- If he's the primary, I drive, right? No.
No, you don't drive.
Then I'm the primary.
Choose one or the other.
OK, you drive.
Slow down! You're lost.
You don't have a clue where we are.
I know exactly where we are.
Did you get a street number? How could I, the way you're driving? Start, stop You didn't write down the right address, did you? Huh? - 3629 Rexmere Road! - We've been round the block twice.
- Where's 3629? - We're not on Rexmere.
You're telling me? I'm on Rexmere.
Maybe you ain't! I just saw a street sign, OK, and it said Kimble Road! That's Kimble! Calm down.
OK, I know it! We're going the wrong way! This is a one-way street! Argh! Relax! We're going to a crime scene.
That takes precedent over the rules of the road.
- Don't do this! - Here we go.
Argh! There we go.
Stop doing this! Slow down! What are you doing, where are you going? Stop! Oh! Man! Lewis! Are you out of your mind? Who are you hollering at, Scheiner? Don't yell at me! Who parked this van? Bayliss! Hey, hey Somebody get a doctor.
Look what you did! Put him in the van! I don't know, it was like the whole crime scene came down on us, like it dropped down out of the sky! That'll mean nothing to the Fleet Safety Unit! They'll drill you like a kebab! - Especially for the seat belt! - Seat belt? Come on! Department regulations demand that officers buckle up "when driving in a City-owned vehicle".
- We were wearing our seat belts.
- They're gonna ask if you were wearing your seat belt, how does your partner end up in the Emergency Room? He was only out for a couple of minutes.
He's fine.
- Where is Bayliss? - Back at the crime scene! He's fine! He won't work with me.
He refuses to, but he wore a belt.
So you say! You also say you weren't speeding! How does he bump his head if he was wearing his belt and you drove slowly? You know Bayliss Either you were trying to make all the lights or he wasn't wearing a belt! What am I gonna do? They'll hang me! - I'd talk to the union about a lawyer.
- You think I need a lawyer? You're charging Wade with a misdemeanour? I don't have any choice.
- So, this whole trial is a show? - You're my star witness.
You're my only witness! I do not wanna put Wade's aide on the stand because it'll come out that Wade is a homosexual.
- You know Wade's homosexual? - It was stupid to make up the kidnap but it is not worth ruining a man's career over! OK, so I get up on the stand and testify that, er - Wade recanted the kidnap story? - Yes! But Wade's lawyer will say that you coerced him.
What I did, I did under express orders of Deputy Commissioner Harris.
If I get up on the stand and say that, I prove a deal was sanctioned by higher-ups in the department.
I bring down Harris and perhaps the whole department.
Look, I can only advise you to tell the truth.
- Stan, see you Friday night? - Why should I see you Friday night? - I don't see you any other night.
- It's our bar's opening.
I told you.
You told me about three others which didn't happen, so I've lost my sense of excitement.
We had a couple of false starts, but this time it's happening.
- I want you to be there.
- Why? Because you're my partner and my pal, plus I got a case of that light beer you like, for you.
- Sorry, Munch! - "Sorry, Munch"? What do you mean? World Wrestling Federation's on TV Friday night.
I'm staying home.
We got a TV in the bar, It'll be like you're right in the ring with Doink the Clown! Watch what you want after! Doink's a serious wrestler! - Hey, hey, hey! - Frank.
- So, when's the grand opening? - Friday night.
- What are you doing here? - I burnt the chicken.
- What? - I burnt the chicken.
- You what? - How about a Powers, neat? - You want a drink? - It's a bar, isn't it? You coming back? I could use you.
You don't know the kind of day I've had.
I got this case, art student at the Institute.
Maybe her boyfriend did the deed, maybe he didn't, but - I don't know.
- Who are you partnering with? - Lewis, I was partnering with Lewis.
- He knows what he's doing.
Yeah, but he's tied up at the moment.
Fleet Safety's on his tail.
For what? You don't wanna know.
Hey, I could use you back.
- Come on! I could use you back.
- This all seems to me like some scheme you and Lewis concocted to get me to come back.
Do you know what it's like to work with him? He's a demon from another dimension! He has no rhythm! I'm riding solo on this girl's murder.
I'm telling you now that I could use you back on this case.
Not a chance.
No.
No! You're a homicide detective.
What else are you gonna do? I could find another joint with a jukebox that works.
I could use a little Bruce tonight, "Brilliant Disguise".
- You like Bruce, do you? - Mm-hm.
God have mercy on the man that doubts what he's sure of.
- No.
I'll put this on your tab.
- I don't want a tab.
- Come on, I'm putting this on your tab! - I don't want a tab! See you later.
'Doctor Bartella to OR Eight.
' - What are you doing here? - I called Nat at work.
They said she was in the hospital.
What happened? She fell down the stairs.
They think maybe she broke her wrist.
She broke her wrist? But she's OK? She's gotta get some stitches in her head, but If only I'd got home five minutes earlier.
I was just out running an errand.
When I walked in the house she was lying there, her face was so white.
She'll be OK, right? What did the doctors say? There's no concussion, yeah, but she's hurt, she's They gotta keep her overnight.
I should've been there, I should've been home! Hey, look, why don't you go back and get some sleep, huh? No, no, no! I wanna stay here in case she needs me.
- Thanks.
- Yeah.
Have some coffee.
- I've already had three cups.
- Have some more.
It's rancid, it's tepid, I have no cream and sugar, and, if that doesn't homesick for the office, nothing else will.
What are you gonna say on the stand? I'm gonna tell the truth, that Harris authorised me making an offer to Wade.
If that brings down Harris and the department down, so be it.
I won't sacrifice myself for the sake of their public images.
And if you're here to talk me out of that, don't waste your time.
If you wanna bring the department down, do it.
I have no love for the bosses.
- I fight the bosses every day.
- Why are you here? You're a proud man, arrogant, but your pride got you into this.
- Don't let it stop you getting out of it.
- It's nothing to do with pride.
It has everything to do with pride.
I know you.
If you know that you're doing this because of righteousness, then do it.
But if this is some vendetta, then you'll get no satisfaction and I'll lose one of my best detectives.
What do you want from me? You want me to come back? Why? Because we're friends? It's not true.
You're right.
I've never been to your house, I I've never met your wife.
We are not friends.
It ticks me off because you say what you think and don't give a damn what I think about what you think.
But there's one thing I know for certain, you change red names to black and for that reason and only that, I want you back.
So, we tell our friends at the Fleet Safety trial board that we were wearing our seat belts but they malfunctioned.
- They can check that.
- OK, so we say the brakes failed.
- They can check that.
- Maybe we hit a pothole.
- They can check that.
- What kind of lawyer are you? Why don't you tell me what to say? - I'm not sure.
- You're not sure? - Where did you go to law school? - No, you say, "I'm not sure.
" At the end of every sentence, "I'm not sure.
" Technically it's not a lie if you're not sure.
So, that's our strategy, huh? That's our plan? - Trust me.
- Trust you? What choice do I got? - Go on, say it.
- Say what? I'm not sure.
Practice makes perfect.
- I'm not sure.
- Try it with a little conviction.
I'm not sure of a lot of things! I'm not sure I got the right lawyer! Detective, let me call your attention to the afternoon of January 6th.
You had a meeting with Congressman Jeremy Wade? - Yes.
- The purpose being to offer him the chance to recant his kidnap story? I told him if he wanted the investigation discontinued he would have to admit that there had been no kidnapping.
At which point the Congressman reluctantly did what you asked.
He told you what you wanted to hear, that there had been no kidnapping? - That's correct.
- Did you tell him that if he cooperated he would not be charged by the police for filing a false report? - I said he wouldn't be charged by me.
- But he was charged? - Not by me.
- I see.
So, you were acting on your own, not speaking for the Baltimore police? The Baltimore City Police Department would never condone special consideration for anyone breaking the law, nor condone offering a special deal for any elected official.
I went to the Congressman on my own initiative.
- Thank you, Detective.
- Detective, you can step down.
'Doctor Max to section 456.
' How are you feeling? - Am I a klutz or what? - Doug told me.
- You fell down the stairs.
- I I can't believe it.
I've gone up and down those stairs a million times.
Looks like you took quite a tumble.
It'd have to be my right wrist, too.
It's gonna be a bitch putting on make-up left-handed.
- How did it happen? - What do you mean? - What, you just lost your balance? - Yeah, I guess.
Wow! You were at the top of the landing and fell all the way down? I don't remember.
It happened so fast.
- So, you don't remember falling? - I was a little fuzzy, I admit.
I had a glass of wine with lunch.
That's probably why I was so uncoordinated.
I was walking up the stairs and turned to say something to Doug and I just slipped, I guess.
You know me, the world's cheapest drunk.
- So, Doug was home? - Yeah.
He wasn't in the room, but Doug told me that he wasn't home when you fell.
Well he meant he was just getting home.
He was just walking in.
That's why I turned to call him.
I heard him walk in.
That's when I slipped.
I fell down the stairs.
Ask my doctor if you don't believe me.
I'm sorry I'm sorry if I upset you.
No, I'm not upset I'm I'm tired, is all.
You understand? I'm tired.
Yeah.
Yeah, I understand.
You get some rest, OK? I'll talk to you later.
Frank.
I wanna thank you, and congratulations.
Thanks to you, the department came out of this whole mess clean.
We saved face with the press.
I'm sorry they put you through the grinder.
I'm gonna revoke your suspension and I assure you there will be no further career repercussions.
You assure me? How can you possibly assure me anything? I know how you feel.
Let down, even a little ill-used and you know what? You're entitled to feel that way.
Am I? Am I also entitled to feel betrayed by one of my own? Do you know how many people are waiting to see me fail? And when one black man fails, we all fail! Don't delude yourself.
All right, so you had to take a humble on this one but, believe me believe me, nobody will remember it tomorrow.
But if the Deputy Commissioner goes down, the police department does and every black man and woman who have busted their ass to get to where they are, every one of them goes down! Don't give me that "one of your own" stuff when I'm the reason you're here! And now I suppose I'll hear the classic rationale, the ends justify the means? Yeah, damn right they do! You've gotta be flexible, you gotta compromise.
You know what? That's what you did on the stand.
You're learning.
You just might make a good shift commander yet.
I'll tell you what I learned today.
If I had my choice between being knocked down to beat cop and playing by your rules and making colonel, I have no doubt what my decision would be.
If I can't trust my partner, I'll eventually wind up dead.
Not politically dead, but stone-cold dead, the morgue dead, so looking at you, I'll take my chances on the street.
I feel safer there.
OK, Jason, if you didn't kill Samuel Hollis, who did? I wasn't even there! I didn't see anything! I know you got stiffed on a burn bag by Hollis.
I know you were ticked off at him! Ticked off enough to kill him? - Who told you that? - The real shooter, probably.
- OK, maybe I was there.
- Ah! Now you remember.
You sit here, you think about it.
He's our shooter.
I feel it in my bones.
Well, go slow, take it easy.
Uh-huh, I know the procedure.
How's Natalie? - Fine.
She comes home tomorrow.
- Yeah? Good news, huh? - Doug - Yeah? I'm I'm a little confused about something.
When I talked to Natalie, I felt there was something she wasn't telling me.
What do you mean? I don't believe she fell down the stairs.
Of course she fell down the stairs.
She told you she did, didn't she? Yeah.
She also said you were home when it happened.
- You said you weren't.
- Come on, it's me you're talking to.
- What are you saying exactly? - I wanna know how she got hurt.
She fell down the stairs! What? You think I'm lying? You think I did something to my wife? I love her, Megan, you know that.
If you're accusing me of something, step up to the plate.
You do what you have to do! Fire me, charge me, whatever.
Otherwise, right now I have a job to do.
All right, Jason, how's your memory now? Remember anything else about Hollis? - Say, Kay - No.
- You don't know what I'm asking.
- Whatever it is, forget it.
Well, guess what? I'm here to invite you to a party.
Friday night.
The grand opening of the Waterfront Bar under the brilliant management of Munch, Bayliss and Lewis.
You sure this isn't a plot to lure investors? Cross my heart.
I just want your gorgeous face on one of my stools.
Finally opening? Congratulations.
Thank you.
What about Felton? Is he back from Philly? No.
Talked to him today.
He's having a good time with the kids.
- He's staying longer.
- How's he doing? Great, terrific.
Having a wonderful time and talking with Beth.
- Kiss that relationship goodbye.
- What do you mean? When the wife starts talking to you, the next step is divorce papers.
I speak from experience.
See you Friday? - I'll try.
- Can you do me a favour? - What now? - Got any good-looking girlfriends you could bring? I'd like to have babes there, make it look good.
- Don't push your luck.
- There's no harm in asking.
I've got a lot of memories of this office.
Mostly of you, sitting behind that desk chewing me out.
You should thank me for riding you so hard.
Look where it's got you.
You said you wanted to speak about Doug.
Is he doing a good job? Yeah, yeah, he is.
He's, er - He's a great detective.
- He's the best.
I'm happy for you.
You know, Peter, Doug and I were partners for eight years but I haven't worked with him in 18 months.
Is he having some problems that I should know about? Whatever problems Doug had, they never interfered with the job and all I'm saying to you is, ten years in Narcotics, he was ready for a change.
I'm sure you've got nothing to worry about.
He's a good cop.
Hey.
What's the matter? Nothing to muck, no one to rake? Just doing a little fact checking, a car-jacker.
Sorry, I don't think I heard you.
You're fact checking? I thought you were a TV journalist.
Do you have this problem with all reporters or just me? Want a story? I'll give you a story.
Frank Pembleton still makes choices based on integrity.
Imagine that.
- Detective Bayliss - No, hear me out.
He single-handedly saved the department, not to mention Wade.
He took all the heat.
He didn't have to, but he did! That's newsworthy, right? - You got me there.
It is a good story.
- Why don't you run that? Because I have no source to confirm it.
When did you respect the source, the truth? Wade made a dumb mistake and you try to crucify him.
If I was so bent on wrecking Wade's life, I'd have reported the real reason - he made up the cock-a-mamey kidnap! - And you're not? - No! - Oh.
Whatever else you might think of me, I'm a good reporter and I also believe that a man's sex life is his own business.
Everyone's entitled to some privacy, even you.
Even me! And right now, I'd like some privacy.
- Miss Delgado - What? How would you like to go to a grand opening of a new bar tonight? It's supposed to be one of the hottest places in town.
- Hey, sweetie! - Hey! How are you doing? - What's that smell? - What smell? Oh! That's dinner, that's a roast.
- How long's it been in? - Approximately or exactly? - You didn't set the timer.
- I don't need it.
I cook by instinct.
Maybe you know more about this than I do but my instinct says get it out.
Oh! Oh! Ow! Ow! - Whoa! It's a little well done.
- Toss it.
Get your coat.
- Where are we going? - Out for a nice long dinner and a nice long talk.
She's been admitted to the Emergency Room maybe four times.
- For what? - Broken ribs, black eye, bruises, cuts.
- One time she had a concussion.
- What did she say happened? She ran into the door.
Car accident You believed her? I believe her husband beats the crap out of her.
I begged her to get counselling.
I reported her injuries to the police.
She won't press charges, so she comes in with a black eye and broken nose and insists she slipped in the bathroom.
I treat her.
I send her home.
- I'm gonna get help, I swear to God! - You were my partner! You and Nat are my friends! The perfect couple.
I'd go home after the four of us went out and bitch to Mike, "Why can't we be more like Doug and Nat? They're always laughing.
" You're a cop, you understand.
Natalie, she doesn't understand the pressure! Will you listen to yourself? You sound like every other pathetic coward we've arrested for beating on his wife or girlfriend! You're making excuses! I was always a stand-up partner, wasn't I, huh? I can't count the number of times I covered your back when we first got onto the force.
You don't know the grief I took, the garbage I had to put up with with you being my partner, but I knew you were a good cop and you being a woman had nothing to do with anything! But that's how it is.
Partners don't turn on each other when things go down.
I want you to go see the department counsellor.
Today.
- I was at the hospital.
I got a name.
- Yeah? A domestic violence counsellor? He's a counsellor.
I don't know what kind! Please, let me do it this way.
I can't let the department in on this.
It'll go into my work jacket and you know what happens then.
I want you to check in with me before the start of the shift, give me the appointment date and also the counsellor's credentials.
- That's the way it's gonna be, huh? - Yeah.
That's the way it's gonna be.
I'm sorry.
I let you down.
I'm sorry.
You know, you're apologising to the wrong person.
- Can I talk to you for a minute? - Come in.
I'm been thinking about this Calvert case.
- Diana Calvert? - Mm-hm.
- Bayliss' case? - I've been looking over the case file and had a few thoughts.
This boyfriend is a dead end.
We should be focusing on one of her teachers, her history professor.
- You think he may have killed her? - Well, her roommate said she had a crush on her history professor, so I Didn't Bayliss question him in his office? Yeah, he did, but I thought he might be brought down for an interrogation.
- Just my thoughts.
- You wanna get him in the box.
No.
Bayliss can do the interrogation.
- Bayliss is good.
- Yeah, he is.
The two of you together, I'm sure you'd get something in my opinion.
So, er? You gonna make me ask, right? Yes.
Um I'd like my badge back, please.
Sure.
Besides, Bayliss needs a partner.
Natalie Doug has a problem and your denying it is not helping him and it's certainly not helping you.
The first time Doug hit me was about a year ago.
It was after you transferred out.
He'd been turned down for promotion and he went out drinking to forget and he came home and, er I said something smart, probably and he told me to shut up, just over and over again.
"Shut up!" I hate to hear that.
I mean, it makes you feel like nothing.
You know, he's not the most patient man in the world, but when he gets angry it's because he cares so much.
He's got so much pain.
He doesn't know what to do with all the pain inside him.
Listen to me, you've gotta get away from him for a while.
- Let him work on this by himself.
- I don't think I can do that.
Do you wanna jump in and out of hospital beds the rest of your life? Do me a favour, OK? Consider moving out for a while.
I think that would be best for both of you.
Uh-huh.
I'll I'll think about that.
What time you got? Nine o'clock and nobody's here yet.
- They'll be here.
- That's right.
People get started late.
Right.
It's nine o'clock.
They're probably home watching "The X-Files".
What happened at Fleet Safety? - No problem.
- What do you mean? You mean "no problem" like you lied? You lied? What is a lie when every man has his own truth? Hey, Stan! Welcome! Big man, make yourself at home.
Would you like your favourite light beer? Nice place.
You got that right.
- Vodka martini! Make it a double! - Double? - We're celebrating, aren't we? - One double vodka martini! OK, here we go! Shaken, not stirred! Like some snacks with that? How about one to back this up? - Hey, Al.
- Megan.
OK, OK! I'm getting an air purifier! I've got one on order.
Oh, I hate cigars! They stink! - It's a manly scent.
- So is locker-room sweat.
- Doesn't mean I wanna work around it.
- Only the Cubans can make a cigar.
Something about the trade winds, the soil.
It's really a thing of beauty.
I thought Cuban cigars were illegal? Illegal to bring in, but not illegal to possess.
Unhealthy but, at the end of the day, it's the only thing that calms me down.
Goodnight.
Have a quiet night.
Don't you put that curse on me! Al - Lieutenant Russert, call for you.
- Who is it? Uniform.
Says she's gotta talk to you personally.
Lieutenant Russert.
Yeah Yeah, I'll be right there.
He was shot twice in the chest.
He's alive just barely.
- Thanks for calling me.
- She shot him with his own gun.
Natalie I told him I was leaving, you know, moving out for a while and I tried to explain but he didn't wanna hear it.
He just kept yelling, "You're not leaving me!" And So I yelled back and he told me to shut up.
"Shut up!" he said, over and over again and then he started hitting me.
You just don't tell someone to shut up, not when they want to talk to you.
You can say, "Please be quiet.
" Or "Ssh!" You don't say, "Shut up!" There No, no, no Hey, big man! Hey! This man here is my partner.
He's my partner! What? What? I just wanted to say that I'm really super-happy that you're my partner.
- You are? - Yeah! - Good.
- I just wanted to - welcome you - No! No, no, no! - Don't hug me! - Come on! No, no, no! Hey, John! You asked, I delivered.
Liz Stephanie Hey, Gee, how are you doing? Homicide is a tough and lonely racket but I wouldn't have it any other way.
- Here's my card.
- That's nice.
- Give me a call some time.
- Sooner than you think I can't believe you lied to Fleet Safety! - I didn't lie to them - You lied to them! I told them I wasn't sure.
Say you're not sure, technically you're not lying.
Can I have your attention, please? I wanna say how much we appreciate all the support we have received from our fellow officers and co-workers who have showed up here! This is to you! Cheers! Come back tomorrow night! Hot wings and half pints at Happy Hour!
