Homicide: Life on the Street s05e02 Episode Script

Hostage, Part 2

We're live from Parkview Middle School in West Baltimore.
An unknown assailant's holding 15 students and their teacher at gunpoint.
But at this time, WBAL has been unable to learn any other details, including the identity of the gunman or if he's made any demands in exchange for release of the hostages.
Back to you, Rog.
Hey.
QRT's gearing up to take the building by force.
I hope they hurry the hell up.
All this standing around is making me crazy.
Well, it's QRT's show.
All we can do is wait for them to make their move.
- I'm fast.
- What? My heart is racing.
Here, feel it.
- No, I'm not a doctor.
- Come on, man.
Just feel it.
- You're a little fast.
- See? See what? We're in the middle of a hostage situation.
You're pumped.
Of course your heartbeat's gonna be a little fast.
- Think I'm having a heart attack? - You're not having a heart attack.
Why am I listening to you for? You ain't no doctor.
City Hall want to know if we're prepared to go in.
- They're losing patience.
- They're not here.
- They don't understand the situation.
- I'm losing patience.
We've given him every opportunity to respond.
He's not responding.
- Ready to go? - We've secured the perimeter.
- Sharpshooters are in position.
- Good.
There must be something more he wants.
All he's asked for so far is beer.
He's had the throw phone for two hours.
If he hasn't picked up by now, I doubt he ever will.
In all due respect, Colonel Barnfather, sir.
This man is unpredictable.
We storm in, he might shoot those children He might shoot them anyway.
Ever think about that? It's your call, Colonel Barnfather.
It's your call.
Get on the squawk box.
Give him one more chance to talk to us.
'The hostage situation continues at Parkview Middle School, 'with no indications of ending anytime soon.
'An unknown assailant has been holding 156th-graders 'and their teacher at gunpoint for the past nine hours.
'Earlier today, the gunman entered school grounds and opened fire, 'randomly shooting at students and teachers.
Two confirmed fatalities ' Frank, is everything all right? Um - Um - Yeah? A-a-a bad dream.
I OK.
What is it? Frank, I've missed you.
It's OK.
It's it's it's not It's not OK.
It's It's not you, it's the medication, the Lopressor.
So you go back to the doctor again and you get something else.
Oh, I Oh, l-l-I go back to the doctor, he prescribes something else, some er some other drug? L-l-I change one side effect for another, huh? Well, maybe you just need time to adjust, huh? Well, maybe I should stop, stop taking it, al al altogether? - Frank.
- Al al altogether.
I want to I want to I'd I'd I Whatever the doctor prescribes, you're taking it, OK? Every day for the rest of your life, if you have to.

I'm sorry.
It's OK.
I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to - Hey, beautiful.
- It's fine.
She's fine.
Everything's fine.
'An unknown assailant has been holding 156th-graders 'and their teacher at gunpoint for the past nine hours.
' Hmm.
This guy's obviously a nut job.
He's mad at the world.
One day he gets up on the wrong side of the bed and look what happens.
- That could never happen to me.
- What? Waking up on the wrong side of the bed, cos my bed, it's against the wall.
- I mean, it used to be against the wall.
- Where is it now? In my brother's basement.
I got evicted from my apartment.
- So where do you live? - Here and there.
Here, mostly.
- You sleep in the Squad Room? - Yeah, it's not bad.
Free coffee, colour TV, you know.
- Why not stay with your brother? - He lives in Chattanooga.
You can't live in the Squad Room.
Why not? It's quiet, you know, it's peaceful, it's cosy.
It beats Chattanooga.
- You can stay with me.
- Really? You mean it? - Just a couple of days.
- You won't regret this.
- That's what my first ex-wife said.
- OK.
- He's still not responding.
- That's it.
Let's do it.
- Colonel, listen.
- We've waited too long already.
Go.
- 25-0-1 to "A" team.
Prepare to move.
- Wait! Someone's coming out.
- All units, hold your positions.
- He's released a hostage.
She must be the history teacher, Donna Digrazi.
- Ms Digrazi, are you hurt? - No, I I'm fine.
- How many children in there? - About 15.
- Wait, there's 17 in your class.
- I had two out sick.
Is everybody in the building all right? Has anyone been shot? - No, my kids are OK.
But - What? I was walking down the stairs.
I saw There were two bodies lying on the floor.
It was er It was Gretchen Merriman, a teacher, and Stuart Marks, a student.
And they'd been shot.
They were dead.
Can you tell us about the shooter? His name? - No, he won't say.
- Why did he let you out? He wants something and he didn't think you'd listen to him and I convinced him maybe you'd listen to me.
- OK, now what does he want? - His pig! His pig.
His pig? What the hell does that mean? The guy sleeps with a pig! He's the primary suspect in Uba's murder.
- I am the primary detective, John.
- Assume Gerry whacked his mother.
Why wait around for us to pick him up? Because he's from Pigtown, huh? He ain't going nowhere.
He wasn't at home or at the zoo.
I don't think we'll find him, he doesn't want to be found.
No, I'm not gonna stop looking until I find him.
- I forgot this side of you.
- Which side? The obsessive side.
We're gonna find Gerry Uba in Maureen Tarkoff's house.
What makes you so sure? Frank said 9 times out of 10 the suspect ends up at the girlfriend's house.
- What do I tell him? - Don't tell him anything.
- We'll do the talking.
- No, I'm going back in.
We can't let you do that.
You can't stop me.
I'm not gonna leave my students.
If I don't come back with an answer, he'll start shooting again.
All right.
We're gonna let her go back in.
- What do I tell him? - We'll get him a pig.
He doesn't want a pig.
He wants his pig.
Tell him we need more time.
Tell him we're working on it.
Right? - What do you know about a pig? - I'll call Animal Control.
I can't believe you took advice on a case from Frank.
He can hardly put a lunch order together.
- He's still a great detective.
- It requires the ability to use one's mind.
Have you noticed Frank's brain ain't what it used to be? The stroke might've screwed up his memory, but he still has his instincts.
If Frank says the suspect's gonna be here, he's gotta be here, cos God knows Frank Pembleton is never wrong.
- Come on.
- You looking for Maureen? Uh, no.
No.
Looking for Gerry Uba.
You seen him? I've been sitting on my stoop all day.
If he was here, I would've seen him.
Gee, I guess Frank was wrong, huh? Where in the hell is this guy? Come on, keep it moving.
- What's going on? - Tactical manoeuvre.
- What'd the cops say? - They said they'd get your pig.
But they need more than fifteen minutes.
They got ten.
Come on, let's go! Animal Control has a black Vietnamese pot-bellied pig, brought in today.
- Whose pig is it? - No idea.
No paperwork on it.
- How do we know it's his pig? - I don't care whose pig it is.
Tell them we'll give them ten minutes to get the damn pig down here now.
'We're live from Parkview Middle School 'where there's some activity at the hostage scene.
'We're unable to confirm what is happening.
'Meanwhile, anxious parents and relatives wait outside school grounds, 'praying their children will survive what police call a brutal, senseless attack.
' - L-l-I should be there.
- Frank, there's nothing you can do.
Th-th-there's nothing I can I can do here, sitting sitting here at home, but if I go there, l-l-I could maybe help out Help out.
Yeah.
Today was your first day back.
I'm going.
You can't drive.
And I'm not taking you.
I'll call a cab.
- Where is that pig? - The radio car just pulled off l-95.
They're six blocks away.
The police'll get your pig.
They told me they would.
Yeah? Well, I don't see Angie.
His name's Angie.
Well, these things take time, you know.
I mean, you gotta be patient.
No, I don't.
- Where's the paint thinner? - What? This is an art class.
Where's the paint thinner? Find it! Get down! They got less than a minute left.
Time's up.
Ah! Please, don't.
Darcy! Get down! Get down! He's fired a shot.
We gotta go now.
We're on the move now.
Get out! Go now! Go! Move it! Get out! Hurry up! Go! Get out! Faster, kids! Get out! Jack! Jack! Help me here.
Come on, just help me.
Go on, get out of there.
Just keep going! Jeez.
There's another body.
That's four down.
Come on, kids.
Come on.
Go.
- Where's the shooter? - He's still in the classroom.
Help me! Help! Help me! Oh, God! It'll be all right.
I need a paramedic! - A little girl's wounded over here! - We'll get to her.
You'll get to her now! Now! Just keep moving, there's nothing here to see.
Come on.
Get away from this area, please.
This is what I can tell you.
We have the suspect in custody.
Soon as he's treated for injuries, he'll be charged with murder.
- Did he shoot anybody else? - We don't have a confirmed number.
Give us a name of the hostages shot.
Again, I can't comment until we have verified information.
That's all I can give you right now.
Hard to believe it's all over.
- Over? - Maybe for you guys.
Not for us.
- You ready to get to work? - Yeah, let's do it, Scheiner.
You asked for the pig.
Now you don't want the pig? - You're too late.
- What am I supposed to do with it? I don't care.
Just get it the hell out of here.
Gee, we recovered the gun, - Crime Lab's processing it now.
- Where'd they take the suspect? Hopkins Baywiew, with everyone else.
It's the closest emergency room.
Get over there.
If he's conscious, I want him interrogated.
In fact, I want him interrogated even if he's not conscious.
Tha thank you.
Frank! What are you doing here? L-l-I came to help out on the investigation.
No, you're not.
This is a red ball.
You need all the men you can get.
I told you that you are on desk duty.
I told you that you are working half-days.
If you don't comply with both of these conditions, I'm gonna kick you off the unit myself.
- But, Gee - No buts.
Go home.
Now.
You have a positive ID on the four victims? Their families have been notified and their names released to the press.
Contestant number one, Tom Maggio, the school janitor.
Entrance wound to the chest.
Jennifer Clark, school dietician.
Bullet wound to the temple.
- Gretchen Merriman, English teacher.
- Shot in the upper back.
And Stuart Marks, 8th-grader, bullet wound to the head.
What about the little girl? The hostage, er Darcy something.
Yeah, she's in critical condition.
The doctors say it's touch and go.
Scheiner.
You got the final autopsy report on Frances Uba? - I've been busy.
- Yeah, get in line.
Hopkins is a madhouse.
Press are swarming.
Our shooter's in the Burn Unit, third degree burns on his arms and chest.
- You talk to him? - No, he went into surgery.
Then he was out for the night, but I did get an ID on him.
- Who is he? - Uba.
- Uba, as in my case, Uba? - How many Ubas can there be around? - Guy's name is Gerry Uba.
- That's the victim's son.
- Why didn't you page me? - I did.
Wait a minute.
I've been looking for Uba for two days.
You take the guy's pig, you don't even file a report? What? Uba said the police were holding his pig.
I call Animal Control.
They have a pig.
- They got no paperwork on it.
- Now I filed the report, and they lost it.
It's Animal Control.
What do you expect? So Uba's upset over his mom getting whacked and over Bayliss kidnapping his hog, so he shoots up a school.
I didn't kidnap any hog.
That pig was evidence.
That porker has nothing to do with what went down at the school.
The guy probably whacked his moms, then figured why quit while I'm ahead? Gee, I'll go to the hospital now and talk to Uba.
Lewis, Kellerman, see if the gun Uba used on his mother is the same one he used on these four victims.
Kay, call Ed Danvers.
Have him meet us in my office.
I want Uba charged.
I want him convicted, third-degree burns or not.
- I want that son of a bitch on death row.
- Right away, sir.
- How you doing, Frank? - Who who? Who finished the last of the er the bagel? - Bagel? - Bagel.
Bagel.
Ba-gel.
Hot, brown liquid bagel.
- Oh, sure.
Bagel.
- You mean coffee, Frank.
That that's what I said, isn't it? Right, the the bagel.
So - So what? - Who finished the last of the bagel, uh? - Kellerman.
- You oh, you you You you make the next pot.
I'm I'm I'm tired of making it and not being able to enjoy it.
Kellerman, the Crime Lab has your firearms report.
Thanks.
Come on, let's go.
Thank you, nurse.
- Mr Cole? - Yeah? I'm Detective Bayliss.
I'm with Homicide.
Your daughter, Darcy, how's she doing? Er I don't know.
The doctors they don't know yet.
Well, I'm I'm sure she's gonna be all right.
My wife's in there now.
I couldn't Yeah.
You hang in there, all right, Mr Cole? Yeah.
Hey.
Look at that? Been a cop for 25 years, I never had my picture in the paper.
You gotta shoot someone or kiss Princess Di, don't you? - Whoa! - What are you doing? I'm Detective Tim Bayliss of Baltimore Homicide.
Doctor Evelyn West, Hopkins Baywiew Burn Unit.
Nice to meet you.
I gotta interview a suspect in here No, you're not.
- Well, yes I am.
- No, really.
You're not.
- Well, why aren't I? - He's asleep.
Three milligrams morphine, IV.
You can talk all you want.
He's not going to answer.
- Well, I'm gonna wait right here.
- Suit yourself, Detective.
I will, Doctor.
Sports page? Frank? Your wife called.
- What what did what did she want? - I don't know.
Did did you talk to her? Look, she called.
I told her I'd tell you that she called.
I told you.
What more do you want from me? - I'll call her back later.
- Yeah, you do that.
Maybe it isn't my place to say, but I'll say it anyway.
- Where's the coffee pot? - The way you treat Pembleton, it stinks.
Why should I be nice? He shouldn't be here.
He's supposed to make coffee.
He can't even do that.
Put yourself in his loafers.
I mean, the guy just had a stroke.
If I had a stroke, do you think I'd get the same consideration? - Yeah, I do.
- Wrong.
I work hard, I close cases, OK? I do it without fanfare, without glory, no special treatment, no coddling.
I come in day after day, night after night, and I do my job.
If I had a stroke, I'd get a disability cheque and a handshake, if I was lucky.
No one would do any special manoeuvring to get me back.
I still think it stinks.
You know what, Brodie? I don't want you at my apartment.
Consider yourself kicked out.
- You can't kick me out.
- I just did.
No, you can't, cos I don't wanna stay with you.
This is the way you treat people? No wonder your partners keep leaving you.
We got confirmation from the Crime Lab.
Uba killed his mom.
- Where is Danvers? - He's on his way.
I won't be kept waiting this time.
He ought to give the guy a break.
He's got other things on his mind besides the job.
- What are you talking about? - You haven't heard his news? - What news? - Danvers got engaged.
To some lady from the Public Defender's Office.
Engaged? I didn't hear.
I would've thought you'd be the first to know.
Didn't you and Danvers used to be you know? Danvers and I are friends.
That's it.
Huh Hey, hey, hey, here's the dead man walking now.
- News travels fast.
- Congratulations.
If you need any advice on your marriage, don't ask him.
So who is the future Mrs Ed Danvers? Her name's Meryl Hansen.
She's a lawyer.
- She's smart, she's she's beautiful.
- She agreed to marry you? I don't know that she wanted me.
I think she wanted the ring.
- Well Hey, congratulations, Ed.
- Thanks, Kay.
- Thanks.
- You know I'm very happy for you.
Danvers? We have business.
Could you get into my office, please? Get to work.
"We're just friends.
" That's baloney.
You see the look on his face? Why do you push her buttons every chance you get? Because it is so easy.
Uba kills four people, shoots seven, holds a classroom of children hostage, murders his own mother, and you're telling me we can't charge him? He's in hospital with severe burns.
We charge him now, he becomes the State's responsibility medical treatment, the whole health care nine yards.
We have to wait till he's released? The doctors in Burns say that's two months minimum.
My office is getting pressure to keep expenses low.
Uba committed murder.
He's gotta answer for that.
- We're hung up on a money issue? - Uba's under arrest.
He's not going anywhere whether we charge him now or in two months? The difference is I'll sleep tonight.
That's the difference! All right.
No promises.
I'll put in a call to the Chief Judge's office, I'll see what I can do.
Keep in touch.
- He's awake.
- Great.
- Gerry Uba? - Yeah.
I'm Detective Bayliss.
I'm the detective investigating your mother's murder.
Were you the one who took Angie? - You kill your mother, Gerry? - What'd you do with my pig? - Answer my question first.
- Where's my pig? - You were angry at her, is that it? - No.
Where's Angie? Why is that pig so important to you, Gerry? You and your pig in kind of you know, love with each other? Hmm? Animals don't feel love.
- They don't feel hate.
- How do you know that? Animals are incapable of good or evil.
They kill simply to survive.
They take no joy in it.
Humans kill for revenge, or out of desperation.
Desperation? You mean that animals don't kill themselves.
Animals don't put their heads inside of ovens and turn the gas on, hmm? That's right.
Like when your father committed suicide.
He didn't commit suicide.
He murdered himself.
Is that why you went to the school, cos you were upset with your father? He committed murder, so you thought like father, like son, hmm? I wanna see Angie! I know where Angie is.
I know the people that have your pig, I know where they have him, and if you talk to me, I will tell you where he is.
Hmm? Come on.
Come on.
- I knew what I had to do.
- And what was that? - You had to go to the school, right? - No.
It could've been anywhere.
You mean the choice of the school, that was random.
It could've been a church, a mall, someone's house.
I just needed to find a place, somewhere to - Kill people.
- No.
- What then? - To kill myself.
You you were gonna kill yourself? Yes.
But you didn't.
- I wanted to.
- But you couldn't go through with it.
You you you lost the guts to do it.
Your father, now, he killed himself, huh? But you couldn't.
You're not as much of a man as your father was.
- Oh, no.
I'm better than him.
- How's that, Gerry? Tell me why.
When I was gonna kill myself, I wasn't gonna leave her behind.
She wouldn't have been hurt.
Like she was when your father died? - That's right.
- Yeah.
So er so you shot her because you wanted to protect her, is that it? Yeah.
Cos you didn't want her to be left alone.
Yeah.
Kellerman, line one.
Kellerman.
Yeah.
When? OK, thanks.
Thanks for calling.
What? The little girl, Darcy Cole.
- Hostage who got shot? - She died.
He killed her! He killed her.
He's in there.
Let me in there! - That son of a bitch.
He shot her! - Whoa! Whoa! Hey, hey.
- Easy.
- He killed my daughter.
No! - No, hey.
Whoa! Ssh! Easy! - No! He murdered my girl! - All right.
- He murdered my little girl.
- He killed my daughter.
- OK.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
- Frank, your wife called.
- Again? Yeah, again.
She said you didn't call her back the first time.
Oh.
Oh! So call her back.
She's gonna think it's my fault.
Uh l-l-I I can't I can't remember my telephone number.
I'll write it down for you.
Here you go.
Right here.
I'll put it right here.
It'll always be right here.
OK? - Frank, why are you still here? - Wha what? What? - What do you what do you mean? - Your shift ended 15 minutes ago.
- Go home.
- I'm gonna take him home, Gee.
This is the folder on the Frances Uba case.
- You talked to Uba at the hospital? - Yeah.
- What did he say? - Nothing.
Just another in a long line of babbling, pig-loving fruitcakes.
- And don't come in early tomorrow.
- Ready to go home, pal? You have to be so hard on him? Frank just had a stroke.
You could give him a little slack, lighten up on him a bit.
I talked to Ed Danvers.
He went straight to the Chief Judge.
He got permission to charge Uba.
- When can this happen? - Danvers is filling out the paperwork.
We should be able to charge Uba in the hospital in a few hours.
What about you, Kellerman? Where are you on this case? One more witness interview with the teacher, Donna Digrazi.
Find her.
I want the paperwork finished.
I want the file on my desk.
I want these names changed from red to black.
You understand? When will we erase Russert and give out Bongi and Sabatino? I don't know, Kay.
I'll get on that tomorrow.
I'm on my way to the hospital.
I want to be there when they charge the bastard.
So how was your day today? - How how was my day? - Yeah.
This is what I'm asking you.
My my day was peachy.
- Stop, would you? You can admit you had a bad day.
I know you had a bad day.
So so so why why are you asking me? Huh? You know, this it's not easy for me.
I mean it's all sort of turned around here.
I'm not driving usually, Frank, you are.
And I'm not used to to looking at the the left side of your face, I'm used to the right side of your face.
How's this? Now now now you can look at the b-back side of my face, huh? You know, l-l-I I'm nice to you, you hate me.
I'm tough with you, you hate me.
What? - What? - What? I had the had the stroke.
I almost died.
I'm supposed to be a-a-a different different person? Huh? L-l-I'm I'm supposed to tr treat treat people b-better? No, no, no.
I'm not people.
I'm your partner.
Oh, oh.
Oh! You you're you're my partner.
L-l-I I sit at a desk.
L-I am of ab-absolutely no use to you, and er l-I'm your partner.
L-I watch my weight.
L-l-I watch my diet.
I wa I watch my blood pressure.
Ev every every eight hours, no matter wh where I am or what what I'm doing, l-I have to take take a little a little white pill.
Lf if I don't er follow the rules I die.
L-l-I'm I'm not going to to to to treat you d-different differently.
I won't.
Cos that that's not who I am, and who I am is all I have left.
- Brodie? - Yeah.
- What are you doing? - I'm making my bed.
- That's your bed? - Yeah.
- It's pathetic.
- I know.
- I want you to stay with me tonight.
- Really? I'm working at the bar.
I won't be home till late.
The dead bolt's tricky, you gotta jiggle the key.
- Don't jiggle it too much or it'll stick.
- All right.
If you use the stereo, turn out the lights.
The wiring's bad.
OK.
And stay out of the medicine cabinet.
- Why? What's in it? - Nothing.
Nothing's in the medicine cabinet, OK? OK, got it.
Yeah! - Ms Digrazi? - Yeah? Hi, I'm Detective Kellerman.
This is Detective Lewis.
- We spoke to you at the hospital.
- Oh, right.
Right.
Of course.
I'm sorry to disturb you, but I never finished taking your statement.
- My statement? - Your account of the incident.
- Why talk to me? You were there.
- Well, it's for the paperwork.
It's for the lawyers when they take the case to court.
I came in early Excuse me? Yes yesterday morning, I I came into work early.
I was excited.
We were finally getting out of the 18th century.
The 19th century, things started to get rolling, don't you think? Yes, ma'am.
It seemed like such a normal morning.
It was was a normal morning.
Darcy Cole was sitting sitting right there.
They're closing up for the rest of the week.
That's it, just a few days? Well, the kids, they the kids have to go back to school.
They have to go back to class, I mean I was here when they opened the doors for the very first day.
I taught here for 28 years.
I love this school.
After tonight, I'm never coming back.
Gerry Uba suffered a serious trauma.
He's on pain medication.
- Is he conscious? - Last time I checked, yes.
- But he's in a weakened condition.
- Is that a problem, Danvers? As long as he's conscious, it's not a problem.
- Gerry Uba.
- Yeah? I'm Leo Haber of the Court Commissioner's Office.
This is Lieutenant Giardello, Ed Danvers of the State's Attorney's Office.
You are charged with six counts of murder in the first degree, six counts of firearms violations and the use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony.
- You understand the charges? - I understand.
You also understand, if convicted, the penalty will be life without parole or the death penalty if the death penalty is sought by the State's Attorney? - I understand.
- You're being held without bail.
A hearing date will be set, at which time you'll respond to these charges.
- Do you understand? - Yes.
These are your copies.
That's it.
What? Get well soon.
