Hudson and Rex (2019) s03e10 Episode Script

Fanning the Flames

I think we should go to St.
Pierre for our anniversary.
It would be so romantic.
I thought you had your heart set on Fogo? Dinner at the inn.
Walk the trails.
Why can't we have two anniversaries and do both? Like a double honeymoon? Exactly.
Oh.
Really? Oh please, don't be work.
Yup.
Hello? Yeah.
Oh, no.
No, no, it's okay.
I'll be right there.
What is it? A pipe broke at the office and there's water pouring everywhere and they need a key.
- Who does? - Security.
This is gonna take 15 minutes, max.
Keep my spot warm, okay? Deal.
Hurry.
Shawn! Oh my God! Shawn!! Shawn!!! Please! My husband's in there! You have to help him! Please hurry! Shawn!!! Shawn!!! Hey, Charlie.
I just got off the phone with the fire marshal's office.
There was a suspicious explosion last night I'd like you to look into.
Sarah's also got some preliminary forensics to go over with you.
Yeah, I'm on it.
What do you say, partner? Go pay a visit to Sarah? What's with him? Well, sometimes he doesn't like to go see Sarah in forensics because he has to wait out in the hallway.
Oh yeah, yeah.
Contamination issues.
Actually, you know what? I'm gonna go get a coffee.
Maybe he wants to join? Yeah! You've got yourself a date.
All right.
The victim's name was Shawn Mueller.
His body's being examined by a pathologist as we speak but given the severity of the blast, I expect he was killed instantly.
Why's the explosion being considered suspicious? Well, Shawn received a phone call saying he was needed at his office.
Some sort of plumbing problem.
Anyway he went into the garage and then seconds later, the vehicle exploded.
Anyone check with his office? There was nothing wrong with the pipes and no call was made from there.
Someone lured him into his garage.
Yeah, that's what it looks like.
I don't suppose that Shawn's phone survived the fire? - Unfortunately not.
- Ah.
What caused the explosion? Take a look at this gas tank.
Yeah.
Ruptured outward.
- Is this the point of origin? - Yeah.
Something ignited the gas inside causing it to explode.
Now do you recognize this? Yeah.
It's a trailer light harness.
It's used to connect the trailer lights to your vehicle's system.
- I have one in my car.
- Yeah, well then you know that it's really just a fancy extension cord with power running through it.
And you see these two wires? I'm pretty sure they were leads.
They would have run from the harness to the igniter which had been placed inside the gas tank.
So when the victim turned his car on electricity would go down the harness to the igniter.
Causing the explosion.
- Did you find the igniter? - Not yet, but I'm sure it's here somewhere, most likely in hundreds of pieces.
And burnt to a crisp.
Well, still, maybe I can reassemble it.
Great.
It might be the key to finding our killer.
All right, bud.
You ready to head back upstairs? Yeah.
Oh my God! Jesse! Veena! It's great to see you! What brings you here? Just looking after some paperwork.
Seems my whole life is paperwork these days.
- Who's your handsome friend? - Oh, this is Rex.
Hello, Rex.
- He's fantastic.
- Yeah.
Yeah, he's really special.
- I didn't know you were a dog lover.
- Yeah, yeah.
Maybe we could meet up sometime and walk our dogs.
I've got a Lab.
That sounds amazing.
It will be a lot of fun.
- See you soon, I hope.
- Yeah.
Me too.
Okay.
Jesse.
Charlie wants you to get Rex back to him.
He says he'll meet you out by his car.
Right, right.
Okay.
- Who's that? - Huh? Oh, that's Veena, we met at a party a couple of months ago.
You know, I thought about asking her out way back when, but, she didn't really seem into me.
Oh! Well, it looks to me like something must have changed her mind.
Something must have, yeah.
I'm still trying to figure out what to do.
There's smoke damage.
I can't live here.
I'm not sure I want to.
I still haven't cleared last night's dishes.
- Sorry.
- No, there's nothing to be sorry about, Mrs.
Mueller.
It's Leah.
Leah.
I'm gonna to need to ask you a few questions.
Sure.
Of course.
But I don't understand.
Do the police always investigate this kind of accident? Well, we suspect your husband's death wasn't an accident based on the fire department's initial report.
I didn't think this could get any worse.
Can you think of anyone who might've wanted to harm him? No.
No.
Shawn was a sweet, caring person.
He donated to charities and volunteered his time.
He - He had so many friends.
- Mm-hmm.
The call your husband received, any idea who made that? - None.
- Think back.
Could you hear a voice? It sounded like a man's voice, but I couldn't identify anything he said.
Um, besides you and your husband, anyone have access to your garage? Anyone could have gotten in.
We never locked it.
I guess we should have.
Thank you for your time.
That's it for now.
If you think of anything, you reach out please.
Rex, go.
So you're telling me this kid just vanished? Yeah.
He even slipped through the uniforms that responded.
Well whoever he is, he must know the neighbourhood.
- Is there any chance he's just a lookie-loo.
- Then why run? I don't know, you'll have to ask him that when you bring him in.
Jesse, tell me about the phone call that Shawn received? Well I tracked the number, but, it was a dead end.
It was a burner phone bought with cash at a flea market.
Any neighbours see anybody around the victim's garage? No one saw anything suspicious which suggests the perp knew the comings and goings of the neighbourhood.
Maybe he blended in so much that nobody even noticed him.
Anything else? I talked to Shawn's employees, neighbours, fellow volunteers.
I mean, Leah's description of him checks out.
Everybody loved the guy.
Okay, I want you guys to do a rundown of all known firebugs.
And pay special attention to anyone who uses - the same technique as the trailer harness.
- On it.
Come on, partner.
- Hey, Sarah.
- Hi! I picked up Thai.
Hope that's okay? Oh! You're a mind reader.
I also brought autopsy results.
And we've got some other forensics for us to go over.
Yes, Rex.
I brought you something too! - You want a beer? - Ah yeah, sure.
So, did the autopsy turn up anything? Nothing helpful.
The injuries were consistent with what you'd expect from an explosion.
How about the igniter? I went through the debris from the garage but nothing yet.
I mean, I'm sure it's there, albeit in fragments but it might take me weeks to find it and even then I'll still have to reassemble it.
Oh.
Looking into arsonists, huh? Yeah.
You made any discoveries? I was just re-confirming that arson is not really used as a means of homicide.
Firebugs light fires for the feeling of gratification.
It's a kind of a psychological fulfillment.
So you're thinking murder first and foremost.
Yeah.
The purpose of this rig was to have somebody in the driver's seat when the vehicle exploded.
The question now is: who'd want to do that to the nicest guy in all of St.
John's? Thanks.
Jesse! Veena! Hey, what's up? Paperwork.
Again.
But I thought while I was here I'd say hi to you and Rex.
Oh, that's fantastic! Rex isn't with you? No.
No no, he he only comes in some days.
- Ah, I see.
- Yeah.
Well, I was thinking maybe on the weekend, we could meet up for coffee and take the dogs for a walk? Yeah! Yeah, that sounds That would be great.
Perfect.
Well, I'll text you later in the week - and we can lock in a time.
- Okay.
- I'm really looking forward to it.
- Yeah, me too.
All right.
You two really seem to be hitting it off.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah, we really are.
Mm-hmm.
Listen, I've got an idea about this teenager that we've been chasing.
I'm thinking he may be a burglar who's been casing people's houses while they're away at work.
You think he ran because he was worried - we'd figure out what he was up to? - Exactly.
Okay, you know what I'll do? I'll look into recent burglaries and see if I can come up with anything.
Well, actually, you might not have to do much digging.
I just got a report from a security company that says a silent alarm was triggered in Leah Mueller's neighbourhood.
- Maybe our guy's back casing houses? - Yeah.
Well, if he is, let's hope he doesn't know that he's triggered an alarm.
Charlie.
Looks like we might have a lead.
Let's go find this guy, partner.
What is it, partner? You smell something? Rex, go! This is Detective Charlie Hudson.
We have a suspect on the run.
Rex.
What is it, pal? Good find, partner.
I've got to tell you, Charlie.
You two are lucky to be alive.
- You're sure you're okay? - Yeah, yeah.
We're good.
Fortunately, Rex spotted those wires.
What happened anyway? I think the kid we were chasing was a decoy.
We followed him and he must have had a partner - come and rig the car.
- Oh.
So you were targeted.
I don't think so.
I mean, they wouldn't have known that I was gonna show up.
They probably just went after the first cop that got there.
So none of the neighbours saw anything? No, but you know what? A porch cam caught this just before Charlie found the device.
A grey sedan.
Unfortunately, we couldn't make out the plates.
Wait.
That could be the partner leaving.
We tried tracking the car, but I don't know, I'm not liking our chances.
There's probably at least a thousand like it in St.
John's.
So the kid just disappeared again? Yeah, he's an escape artist.
At least now we know how he's doing it.
He's using fence tops and back yards as sidewalks.
We put together a composite drawing based on your description.
He could be a minor.
You know, I'm gonna go check the young offender files, to see if I can find anything related to arson or explosions.
Well, it looks like Sarah's got something.
All right, partner.
Hey, you know we have to go back to forensics sometime, huh? You know what, Charlie? He can just stay here with me.
Really? Okay.
Don't make a habit of this.
Understand? You know what? Um, actually, this weekend, I was thinking of going for a big long walk.
You know, I thought maybe Rex might want to join? Uhh.
Hmm.
Yeah, I guess he'd like that.
Great.
Yes, we're gonna have a great time.
Hey, Sarah.
You got something for me? Oh my God, Charlie.
How are you two doing? Rex is fine.
And you? Ah, you know.
Shaken, not stirred.
What's up? Well, I determined the wire your car was rigged with is the same type that was used on Shawn's vehicle.
Suggesting we're dealing with the same perp.
Yes.
More importantly, though, I got to examine the igniter.
It's an electronic blasting cap.
And it turns out luck was with you.
- What do you mean? - The leads from the trailer harness, they weren't pushed past the insulation inside the blasting cap.
They weren't making contact.
Meaning it could never have gone off.
Exactly.
On the one hand, fortunate for you.
On the other, it's an oddly sloppy mistake for someone who seems to know what they're doing.
Maybe it means there was something else.
I'm gonna try to track down where the blasting cap came from.
If I can figure that out, then we might have a line on the killer.
Okay great, you let me know when you hear anything.
Okay.
- Charlie.
- Mm-hmm.
That's two explosives planted by the same perp.
I know.
We may be dealing with a serial bomber.
Jesse, Sarah examined the igniter.
Electronic blasting caps, right? Yeah, how did you guess that? Well, I was looking into some files of some known arsonists and came across this guy.
Richard Turner.
He goes by the name Richie for short.
Now, he was arrested a few years ago for a string of car arsons.
Now his MO was using a trailer hitch harness wired to a blasting cap.
- Was anyone killed? - No.
No, see he made a point of stealing the owner's fob and then detonating the car remotely while nobody was around.
And, here's the other thing.
He was also granted early parole a couple of months ago.
Well, if he is our guy, he's decided to let people blow themselves up.
Why'd he change his MO? Maybe it was personal.
Maybe he had something against Shawn.
Okay.
See if you can find a link between him and Richie.
- Will do.
- What I don't get is why he would go after a responding officer.
Maybe Maybe he's holding some sort of grudge about being arrested.
- Who arrested Turner? - St.
John's Regional.
But actually, who cracked the case was an investigator over at Seafair Insurance.
His name is Phil Cummings.
Okay, you find Richie Turner, - I'm gonna go talk to Phil.
- Yeah.
- Cream? - No, I'm good.
Thank you for seeing me on your day off.
Not a problem.
So Richie Turner's back in business is he? Well, we don't know that for sure but he is a person of interest.
If he is our guy, he might be trying to get revenge on the people who put him in prison.
So that might include you.
I appreciate the heads up.
Firebugs.
They are a strange breed.
Richie was really out there.
I can't tell you how happy I was when the insurance company let me switch from investigation to sales.
Hmm.
What can you tell me about Richie? Six vehicles exploded over four months.
All in high end neighbourhoods around the peninsula.
A miracle no one was hurt.
How did you get onto him? Well, we figured they were using some sort of blasting cap.
So I started tracking down who'd bought them.
It took me almost a month to come across Richie's name.
Mmm.
Richie's never killed before.
Any idea why he might start now? Richie seems like a reasonable guy when you talk to him.
A good guy, even.
But I always felt there was something else going on inside.
He loved fires.
Big ones.
Explosions.
Maybe he's just decided to take it further.
Any idea how he'd choose his victims? He would find a car or a truck that he liked.
Maybe the colour or the tires.
- Whatever caught his eye.
- That's it? That's it.
It's hard to wrap your head around but that's it.
And then he would stalk the owners.
Figure out a way to steal the fob and then boom.
He loved the explosions as much as the fire.
So nothing personal about his victims.
No.
Anything else I can help you with? No, that's good for now.
Thanks, I'm gonna show myself out.
Rex.
Hey, Jesse.
Any luck finding Richie's address? Not yet but I got something else.
Apparently Leah and Shawn's neighbours heard them having some very loud arguments.
They got so bad, they almost called the police.
- When was that? - A couple of months ago.
Maybe not everything is so great on the home front.
Let's bring her in.
What were you and your husband arguing about? Nothing that hundreds of couples haven't fought about before.
We were drifting apart.
Shawn was volunteering so much.
And I guess was feeling neglected.
But we found a solution and we worked things out.
What was that? I began helping out, tagging along and volunteering and helping with fundraisers.
And he started spending more evenings at home.
It all seems so petty now that he's gone.
Do you recognize this man? No, I don't think so.
Who is he? Well, right now, he's a person of interest.
How about him? - Is that the kid you chased? - Yeah.
I'm sorry, I don't recognize him.
You ever see this car in your neighbourhood? No.
I don't think so.
I'm sorry.
I feel like I'm being absolutely no help.
Like I'm constantly letting Shawn down.
I mean maybe.
Maybe I've seen it before.
I just I can't be sure.
- The officer will see you out.
- Thank you.
So what do you think? I know lots of people who've quarreled over those very same things.
Present company included.
Yeah, guilty here as well.
Something tells me she's holding something back though.
What, about the car? Yeah.
Yeah, maybe.
Maybe something else.
Guys, hey.
I got the address for Richie Turner.
Richie Turner? - Yeah? - Detective Hudson, SJPD.
Hey, look.
I checked in with my parole officer yesterday, - just like I'm supposed to.
- No, I'm investigating a recent vehicle explosion - and another attempted one.
- Okay.
Look, I get why you're talking to me, I do, - but I don't do that sort of thing anymore.
- No? But they were both triggered by a trailer light harness that was wired to a blasting cap in a gas tank.
Wait, that was your MO, wasn't it? Yeah.
That's how I used to do it.
Okay, I admit that.
But look, I've done my time and I've done all my therapy.
I mean, I don't even think about starting fires anymore.
- What's in there? - Just some gardening stuff.
Oh, so you won't mind if I take a look? No, go ahead.
- What have you got, buddy? - I find it helps with my anxiety.
- Look, there's nothing in there.
- Yeah, my partner disagrees.
That's a lot of blasting caps.
Now, you are either planning a really big garden or you're back to blowing up cars.
These blasting caps we found in your shed are just like ones we found rigged into a car's gas tank.
I don't know anything about a rigged car and I have no idea how these caps ended up in my shed.
Really? Well, if you didn't put them there, who did? How am I supposed to know? It's a frame job.
- Oh, you're being framed? - It's the only explanation that can be, so Uh-huh.
Well, that's an elaborate frame job, considering they used the exact same wiring technique that you used to do three years ago.
I told you that I'm done with all that.
Where have you been for the past few nights? Home.
Alone.
Trying to stay out of trouble.
Well, I've got bad news for you, Ritchie.
You're looking at a first degree murder charge.
Ohhh.
I've never hurt anybody in my life.
Check my record.
I used to blow up vehicles, not people.
What do you know about this guy? Nothing.
I don't know who this is.
But look, I'm telling you, anybody could have put these in my shed.
And anybody could be copying the way that I blew things up too.
I have worked so hard to stop being the guy that I was.
You have to believe me.
I'm being set up.
Charlie he may deny his involvement but all the evidence points to Richie Turner.
It's his MO.
He's in possession of all the equipment needed and has the know-how to rig your car in the few minutes you were chasing the fence runner.
Well, speaking of whom, how does our fence runner fit into this? I showed Richie the composite and he didn't flinch.
Yeah, well he's a good actor.
Well, there's another inconsistency.
Richie doesn't have a grey car.
Maybe the car was a coincidence.
I don't know, Joe.
Something's not adding up.
Charlie, we can hold this guy for 72 hours.
That's it.
We need to find out in that time whether this is our guy or not because if he is - we can't let him out on the street.
- Guys.
I think I have a line on our fence walker.
- Yeah? - Yeah.
I wasn't getting anywhere looking into burglaries.
So I widened my search to general prowler reports.
- What did you turn up? - Well this shot was taken on a home security cam three months ago.
The quality of the image isn't great, but I mean, how many people can there be out there walking backyard fences? Yeah, it's pretty blurry but I'm pretty sure that's our guy.
And these shots were taken by various security cameras over the past couple of months.
Now it turns out, there's been a rash of general prowler reports - that may be linked to our guy.
- Any reports of thefts? Or break-ins? Or any arson attempts? No, nothing directly linked to him.
But there's also been a rash of general delivery thefts in the areas our prowler was spotted.
He's a porch pirate.
He walks the fences scoping houses to see who isn't home and then if a delivery is made to that house, he sweeps in and steals the package.
I also looked into the dates of these various sightings.
Looks like our guy might be a creature of habit.
- Sorry, what do you mean? - Well, he frequents each area for precisely one calendar month before moving on.
July, August, September.
And more specifically, he only shows up Tuesdays through Thursdays.
- And today being Thursday - Means he's probably on the prowl.
- So how do we catch him? - By using the right bait.
Jesse, see if anyone in the neighbourhood is on vacation.
Yep.
The package is in place.
And the GPS inside the parcel is transmitting beautifully.
Charlie? Are you and Rex in position? Just a guy and his dog out for a stroll, right, buddy? Are you getting the GPS? Yeah, it's coming through.
So that house, the owners are gone for eight days.
If our guy's been scoping the neighbourhood, - he knows they're gone for sure.
- Okay.
So we just have to wait and see who grabs the package.
So Jesse, did you ever get up the nerve to ask Veena out? Well, actually, sort of.
Yeah, we're doing something this weekend.
Wait a second.
Who's this Veena? Yeah, how come I didn't know about this? Well, Veena is a paramedic that Jesse's interested in.
Oh, intriguing! So what's the plan? What are you two gonna do? I don't know.
I don't know.
We're just gonna grab some coffee.
No big deal.
Does that mean you're not taking Rex for his big walk? Oh no, Charlie.
I mean Of course not.
I can totally manage both things.
Oh, wait.
The package is on the move.
- Wait, where? - It is six houses south of your position moving east on the fences.
All right, Rex.
He's not getting away this time.
- Ready? Let's go.
Come on.
- On the move.
Yeah.
He's parallel to you right now, Charlie.
Looks like he's about to hit a side street.
Ughhh! SJPD, kid! Everyone thinks they can out-run Rex.
You're not the first.
⪠Connor Meadows.
Age 18.
No criminal record.
Looks like he's graduated to theft.
Did he ask for a lawyer? Says he didn't want one.
Also said he didn't want to call his parents.
He's not a minor.
It's his right.
I guess it's time to figure out what his role is in all this.
I think Rex might need to pay a visit.
Hmm.
I want to show you something, Connor.
This is you.
Isn't it? In different neighbourhoods.
Over the last several months prowling in people's back yards.
So, I stole some stuff.
Big deal.
Here's the thing.
This isn't just about theft.
It's about murder.
Murder? Wait a minute.
I don't have anything to do with any murder.
See this man? That's Shawn Mueller.
He was killed instantly when his truck exploded.
- Someone rigged it to blow up.
- I wasn't involved in that.
The next day, my K9 partner found you near his house and you ran.
Why did you run if you have nothing to hide? Your dog came after me.
I was scared.
Well, this explosive device was planted in my car while I was chasing you.
That's adding attempted murder to the list.
I couldn't have done that.
You just said you were chasing me.
Yeah, but we think you had a partner.
This man right here, Richie Turner.
You lured me away and he planted the device.
I've never seen this guy before.
This is crazy.
I had nothing to do with any of this.
Really? Okay.
Connor? Why don't you convince me? Connor, I'm giving you one chance at this.
Make the most of it.
All right.
The night of the explosion, I was there, walking the fences, looking for - Well, you know what I was looking for.
- So what happened? I heard the explosion.
The whole place kind of shook.
I went to go see what was up.
I watched the fire trucks arrive.
And I saw how upset that lady was.
You're probably not gonna believe me but I just wanted to know how she was.
So I came back the next day to check things out.
And you were there.
Your dog spotted me.
I couldn't get caught.
So I ran.
And my car? I don't know anything about that.
I'd just come back to scope for empty houses.
I swear that's the truth.
That's our cue, Rex.
Okay.
Well, we're gonna keep you in custody until I can prove your story.
The dog's pretty amazing.
If he could climb a fence, he would have caught me the first time.
Mm-hmm.
He doesn't like just anyone.
Connor.
You told me everything? When I first started walking the fences in that neighbourhood, I was watching the dead guy's house.
I saw something.
What? It was his wife.
Sometimes when her husband left, some dude would come visit her.
They were more than just friends.
I should've told you about the affair.
I'm so sorry.
It started back when Shawn and I were having troubles but I couldn't keep doing it, so I ended it.
- When? - About three weeks ago.
Did Shawn know? - No, no.
I never wanted to hurt him.
That's why I broke it off.
How did the other man take it, when you said that it was over? He was upset but he accepted it.
Okay.
Well, I'm gonna need to talk to him.
What's his name? I can't tell you that.
Okay, Leah.
Whoever you were involved with, they could have had something to do with Shawn's death.
No, he would never do anything like that.
In my experience, when it comes to love, people are capable of just about anything.
But he has a young family.
And this is murder.
Your husband's murder.
You think I don't know that? You think I don't feel terrible? I feel so guilty about everything, I don't think I'll ever be able to forgive myself.
Leah, you're forcing me to go and find this man.
But no, I just can't do it.
Destroying a family won't bring Shawn back.
If he has something to do with Shawn's murder, then you're gonna be charged as Accessory After the Fact and that can be up to 14 years in jail.
I'm sorry, but I won't help you.
Leah flat out refused to give you the name of her lover? Yeah, she claims she doesn't want to destroy his family.
- Do you believe her? - No, not for a second.
I'm gonna prove she's lying and use it against her.
Even if Leah had an affair, it doesn't mean she had something to do with her husband's death.
That's true.
But if she was involved, it would explain how the killer gained access to the garage without being seen and also how they knew exactly what to say to lure Shawn there.
Okay.
What about this kid, Connor? How does he fit in? We've got nothing directly linking him to the crime.
No hard evidence on Richie Turner either.
I might be able to help with that.
- Yeah? - Blasting caps have batch numbers encoded on them.
So I compared the blasting caps that you retrieved from Richie Turner's - with the one that Rex pulled from the car.
- Let me guess.
- They're from the same batch.
- Yes, exactly.
But here's the interesting thing, That batch was sold to a road building company here in St.
John's.
The road building company reported some stolen blasting caps from a job site - near Argentia four weeks ago.
- Any suspects? No, none identified.
However a security cam caught a suspicious grey sedan in the area shortly before the theft.
Looks like the one we saw just after your car was wired, Charlie.
- Yeah.
- Stolen plates? Mm-hmm.
You got it in one.
And that's not the only explosive information I dug up.
I looked into Shawn and Leah's finances and came across this.
That looks like a life insurance policy detailing both Leah and Shawn as each other's beneficiaries.
Not uncommon for a married couple.
Well, here's the thing.
The policy was taken out three weeks before Shawn was murdered.
Oh, so that's some interesting timing.
Wait.
What was the payout? - Two million dollars.
- All payable to Leah.
Well, maybe she's not as broken up about her husband's death - as she's letting on.
- Wait a second, Jesse.
Zoom in on the name of the salesman - who sold them the policy.
- Yeah, sure thing.
Phil Cummings.
Wait, that's the guy who was investigating Richie Turner's car fires years ago.
Yeah, one and the same.
Do you recognize this man? That's him.
That's the guy the wife was making out with.
- You're positive? - Totally.
So do you still think I had something to do with these murders? No, I don't think you did.
Connor, can I ask you something? - I guess.
- Why do you walk the fences? Why do you care? There's easier ways to steal packages.
You can just follow a delivery truck.
It makes me think there's more to walking the fences than just casing houses.
You really want to know? I do.
When I watch those houses, I see how normal people live.
Things aren't so normal at home.
What do you mean? My mom has this boyfriend.
We don't get along.
Does he come Tuesday to Thursday? Yeah.
That's why I go out on those days.
Walking the fences, looking to find out how normal people live.
Look, Connor, you're gonna be charged for the theft and the trespassing.
You're gonna need a lawyer.
I think you need to tell your mother before she finds out another way.
I know.
It isn't gonna go well.
Well, there are people who can help you guys work things out.
I can set you up with them, if you want.
I think that'd be a good idea.
So, I did some digging into Leah's past.
Now, her real name is Leah Parker.
Her father worked as an electrical engineer on huge infrastructure projects.
So the family moved around a lot.
Now here's the thing.
Leah's marriage to Shawn was her fourth.
- I'm sorry, fourth? - Yeah.
Yeah, she was married at 21, 24, 27 and then finally, Shawn, at 30.
God.
I quit after my first.
Yeah.
Me too.
What happened to all the husbands? Nothing.
Nothing, they're all still alive.
She's a serial divorcée.
That's a lot of alimony settlements.
Yeah, she's doing pretty well in that department.
Did Shawn know about her history? Absolutely.
That's why he had a very stringent pre-nup in place.
If they got divorced, she got nothing.
But in the event of Shawn's death, she gets everything.
Exactly.
Not to mention a huge insurance buyout.
So Leah and Phil want Shawn out of the way so they can spend the rest of their life together.
But Phil finds out that fire bug Richie Turner is getting out of prison.
That provides them with a perfect fall guy.
But why the hit on you and Rex? Well, Sarah said that the igniter was improperly wired.
You know what? I bet that was on purpose.
Yeah, that provides us with an intact blast cap and points the finger directly at Richie Turner.
Yeah.
You know, I didn't get anywhere with Leah.
Maybe I should try my luck with Phil Cummings.
Come on, pal.
Jesse.
No sign of Phil at his house.
You should probably call his office.
Already did.
He didn't show up to work today.
Well, maybe he's at Leah's.
A squad car drove by ut no sign of either of them.
He could have made a run for it already.
We should probably alert the airlines and the ferries.
Yeah, we're on it.
Also we'll put an alert out on his vehicle.
Hey, Jesse, hold on a second.
I think Rex found something.
I'll call you back.
Okay.
Rex? You got here too soon.
- Leah.
- Ah! Stay where you are.
If I press this, kaboom.
I know all about your plan: you and Phil having an affair.
Oh! You're not just a pretty face.
Yeah.
We met at one of Shawn's boring charity events.
We started talking.
One thing led to another.
You know how it goes.
Let me guess.
A couple of months from now, you two would accidentally bump into each other, probably fall in love and get married and maybe eventually there'd even be an insurance policy on Phil.
Hmm.
Yeah, I thought about that.
But I didn't want to get greedy.
You weren't planning on getting married? No.
It turns out the affair was exciting but Phil wasn't.
Wow, you really fall in and out of love a lot.
I have commitment issues.
So where's Phil now? He wasn't feeling well.
It was something he ate.
I wasn't gonna kill him.
Yet.
Later would have been much less suspicious.
But plans change.
I'll tell them you sacrificed yourself getting me to safety outside but died heroically trying to stop Phil from detonating one of his bombs.
Oh well.
Leah.
Don't do anything you're gonna regret.
See that's the thing, Detective.
I don't really have regrets.
I think you're gonna have a lot of regrets.
Good job, pal.
Great, thanks.
So that was the hospital.
Phil Cummings is recovering.
Leah had poisoned him.
He's confessed to everything and they're both being charged with Shawn's murder.
So I guess that means Richie Turner is in the clear.
Yeah.
I called his parole officer to let him know he had no involvement.
And what about Connor? What happened to him? Well, him and his parents are gonna see a counselor and they're committed to working it out.
- Oh! That's good news.
- Yeah, it is.
Well Rex, what do you say we call it a day? Hmm? Come on, pal.
Hey, Rex! How are you? Oh, seems like you two have met.
We have.
Jesse introduced us.
My name is Veena.
Oh yeah! Um, Jesse's mentioned you.
I'm Charlie.
- Nice to meet you.
- You too.
Rex is pretty special.
Yeah, I'm pretty lucky to have him as a partner.
Rex is your partner? Yeah, pretty much joined at the hip.
That's quite a coincidence.
Jesse led me to believe that he had a dog named Rex too! How about that? Two identical dogs with the same name in the same department.
Or maybe there's another explanation? Yes.
Yes, there is.
I mean, well technically Technically, Rex doesn't belong to Charlie.
He belongs to the Major Crimes Department.
You know, and seeing as I'm part of the department then I blew it, didn't I? Big time.
Well, it was nice to meet you all.
Bye, Rex.
Bye, Veena! - That was awkward.
- Yeah, wasn't it? Well I think, we should look on the bright side.
At least you're taking Rex for his really big walk this weekend, right? Right.
Yes.
Yeah, you know, Charlie, maybe you should consider cloning Rex.
Okay? Easier on everybody.
Rex.
Me.
Next time on Hudson & Rex Terrance Oswald.
His body found painted with a red X just like the old Duane Laford murders.
Rex and I are going to talk with the VP of Oswald Development.
Terrance did not need my help building a bad rep.
My dad was a hard man to get close to.
Do you know a man named Terrance Oswald? - Only by name.
- The murder last night mimicked your father's crimes.
He never murdered anyone.
Looks like we really do have a serial killer on our hands.
