Intelligence (2006) s02e01 Episode Script

A Man Escapes

He's a drug dealer and a murderer.
Is this the beginning of a war? What goes round comes around, I guess.
Everybody talks.
- He pissed off a lot of people.
- Pass on my regrets.
Sometimes you got to get in bed with the enemy.
You've got a mole in your wire room.
I'm gonna let it leak that Jimmy Reardon is working hand in hand with the Organised Crime Unit as an informant.
- What's his name? - I can't tell you that.
I got a guy over there threatening to put it out that I'm a rat.
I need you to seduce someone for me.
You think there's yet another mole.
They've discovered a mole who's about to be promoted to the top job.
I'd like to have him removed.
We got a name.
- He was dead when I got here.
- Royden's dead.
He's still alive.
You want to kill a snake, you got to cut off his head, not his tail.
- 200lb is gonna put Reardon away.
- Yeah, then do it.
You'd better not be setting me up.
I'm sorry about the life I lead.
Jimmy! We're too strategy here.
Hold on.
Go again.
He's in the wash room.
I'm not gonna sit here and watch while you gun the man down.
You're not in Canada any more.
You've no authority here.
This is a DEA operation.
Don't blow my sting.
Go again.
Where's Reardon? He's in the wash room.
Sit tight.
We have to wait for the money to be exchanged.
When Reardon takes the bag of money, we'll arrest him.
Nobody's gonna get shot.
Grab your bag.
We're leaving.
Tell me where you are.
Stella, we got to go.
DEA! Get back in the room now.
Get back in the room! - What's happening?! - Shut up! Shut up! - Where's my husband? - Shut up! Take the money and go and I'll pay the bill, all right? Take the money and go? Is that the signal? - To take me out? - What are you talking about? You set me up.
What are you saying? You lie to me one more time, I'm gonna shoot you right where you sit.
I'm sorry, Jim.
They forced me to do it.
He's at the table.
You should move.
We wait for the exchange.
He has to take the money.
You're a dead man, you know that.
Don't do anything stupid, all right? Everybody in here is armed.
You just stay calm.
I'm not gonna get myself killed over a few hundreds pounds of weed.
I'm giving myself up, you understand me? I'm giving up the gun.
- Gun! - Wait! Get down! Agent down! Agent down! You wait here.
Hold on! We got him! He's down in the alley! Got him! He's down in the alley! What's this? - Your dad's phone number on this? - Don't answer.
I'd like to speak to a lawyer.
We have a right to speak to him.
Shut up.
Gopher Six.
Reardon's down.
He's dead.
Go again.
Reardon's been shot and killed.
- I'll kill you! - Calm down! That's not him.
That's not Reardon.
Jesus Christ.
Get the dogs down here.
Yes, sir.
That's not him.
It's some scavenger.
You'd better get out of here.
Who let this asshole into the alley? Sorry to call in so late.
It's Inspector Spalding in Vancouver.
11:00pm our time.
I've got an urgent situation here.
Our American mole was just found murdered in his hotel room.
I'm looking to you for some direction.
If you could call me back ASAP, I'll fill you in.
Homicide, please.
Detective Ogawa.
Lock down the 8th floor.
I need a room to use as a command centre right away.
Tell your staff nobody talks to the press.
I don't want you speaking with anybody, unless I give you the OK.
We'll talk about this later.
Martin? We need to control the investigation and any information coming out of it, starting with her.
Homicide's on their way.
They'll lock up the scene.
We'll be over their shoulder.
- They're gonna want to talk to her.
- It's not gonna happen.
We'll be playing the national security card.
Take her up to the room.
I wanna interview her before anybody else does.
Soften her up for me.
Without scaring her, do what you have to.
OK, this is Homicide.
Hang on to this until we get a look.
Take her the back way.
Detective Ogawa.
Thank you for coming.
Right this way.
We're temporarily posted down here.
His name is Richard Royden.
He's a deputy director of CSIS.
We've had surveillance on him a couple of weeks.
He's been working as a mole for the Americans.
- He's an American agent? - Correct.
You're pulling me into this, why? I can't investigate it myself.
I need someone I can trust.
You don't trust your own people? I need the perception of objectivity.
Thanks for being so candid.
Any questions come at you from the Americans, put 'em onto me first.
You run the investigation.
I'll control the information flow.
You got to promise me full disclosure.
I'm gonna wanna hear about everything you got.
- No black lining.
- Whatever you need.
Call me on this number.
So how did you hear about this? We had a wire on the room.
I'll make sure you get a copy of the tapes.
All right.
Let me get into it.
Let's get his floor taped off.
Make sure management knows we're gonna be up here a while.
- Please leave a message.
- Ted, this is Mary.
I need to hear from you immediately.
We've got a situation here.
Our American mole just got killed.
Dick Royden is dead, so get back to me.
How you doing? Listen, you keep your mouth shut about that gun being rigged, I'll make sure you get a break.
Who's the agent in charge here? That would be me - George Williams.
Carl Weathers, FBI.
What's the situation? We have two dead.
Our agent here and a civilian out in the alley.
Can you tell me what happened? We had a controlled situation, on a Canadian target, a Vancouver drug kingpin, name of Jimmy Reardon.
Now, he was down here, picking up a cash payment from our informant.
Suddenly Reardon pulled a gun.
Our agents responded with a warning.
He fired and killed our man here.
We returned fire.
And Reardon escaped up the back steps, onto the roof, where he killed a civilian in the alley.
Then he disappeared.
- Who's who here? - We're all DEA.
With the exception of the informant.
All right.
This is an FBI scene now.
We'll be running things.
I'm sorry you lost a man.
Yeah, me too.
I'm not lying.
I've said it over and over again.
You're not listening to me.
All right.
Let's calm down.
What's the problem here? Katarina seems a little confused as to what happened in the room.
I am not confused.
You're the liar.
I know what happened.
Nothing happened, you lying bastard! Why don't you give us a moment alone? You want another one? Knock this back.
- I'm not lying.
- Tell me what happened.
I already told you what happened.
Tell me again.
You're heading to Royden's room.
You knock on his door.
No, I don't knock.
I have a key.
I just put the key in.
And I go in.
He's there.
He's on the floor.
It looks funny the way he's leaning on the bed and I wonder what he's doing on the floor? When I look, he's not moving.
When I go closer and I touch him, he's still not moving.
You told me you went to the room with the intention of killing him.
Yes, but I didn't.
What does it matter what my intention is? He was dead already.
Did you see anybody else on the floor or waiting for the elevator when you were going into the room? Yes, the room service guy was dropping the dinner off.
Did you get a good look at him? I was trying to hide my face.
All right.
Why don't you relax here a while longer? I'll do anything that you ask me to do.
Please don't kick me out of the country.
I'm telling the truth, please.
I hope so.
Take her out the back way.
Get her home and have somebody sit with her.
Hey, Hogarty, it's Ronnie.
Where did you go, huh? I need to talk with you right now.
Right now.
The deal is, you answer my calls 24-7, right? Don't make me come down to your home, looking for you.
I don't want to embarrass your wife and kids.
Find me a number for Gloria, right away.
You got any idea where a fucking bankermanger is, where is lives? He splits with one of my dancers.
He lives in West Vancouver.
Why? I got a gut feeling he's thinking of taking a runner with our money.
He's not that stupid.
How far is he gonna get? Do me a favour.
Call his wife if you have to.
I got this weird feeling's something's wrong.
- Sweet's not going on again.
- What? She says she's not going on again tonight.
She's going home early.
Listen, you can't leave.
Gloria bailed with Hogarty.
You can't bail on me too.
I'm done.
Find yourself another dancer.
- Apparently, I'm replaceable.
- You're not replaceable.
Your name's on the marquee.
You, they'll pissed at for a no-show, not me.
- Please move.
I have a taxi waiting.
- Hang on a minute.
Hey, man, it's me.
Yeah, how you doing? Not good, man.
Morgan set me up.
I'm on the run down here.
There's cops everywhere.
I think maybe a citizen and a cop got killed in the shoot-out.
What? Who's shooting who? Are you hurt? No, I'm good.
I'm fine.
- Is that Jimmy? What happened? - I'm gonna pull you out of there.
So you find some place to hide out and you lay low.
- All right.
- Don't use the phone.
Get a new one.
Call me back in a couple of hours.
I'll put some things in play.
We're gonna come and get you.
Lock Royden's office down for me.
Nobody goes in there.
What's next? No visible wounds.
Tell me who found the body.
I got the call from a confidential informant.
She had a date with him.
She shows up.
She's got a room key.
She goes in and sees him dead on the floor.
Where is she now? I've got an eye on her.
Bring her back and I can interview her.
I can't allow that.
She's a confidential informant on matters of national security.
What's with that bullshit? What happened to full disclosure.
What I can do is interview her myself, give you her statement.
Not expose her.
I'll interview her with the lights out and wear a blindfold.
Here's how it is whether you like it or not.
I've got political masters I answer to.
Till I talk to them, my hands are tied.
This is a national security issue.
- She's not gonna talk to you.
- Fuck that, Mary.
That just ain't gonna fly.
I got political masters too and they're up my ass.
Look into that room service trolley down there at the end of the hall.
My informant saw the waiter leave the room just before she found him.
Check with the hotel.
They might have video.
I'm gonna be talking to your boss about this.
Go ahead.
Then you can call me and let me know what you got here.
Yeah? Find me a Seattle station.
What the hell is going on? I don't know.
He's on the run still in Seattle.
Who have we got down there? You know anybody? A deadly shoot-out between a Canadian drug dealer and drug enforcement agents with two fatalities so far.
The FBI are warning the public to be on the lookout for this man.
He is James Reardon He is Canadian, in his late 30s and is armed and dangerous, having allegedly shot and killed two men in his escape.
He is still at large and believed to be in the downtown Seattle area.
We'll keep you informed as the story continues to unfold.
OK.
I want a boat and a plane standing by.
Get on it.
I'm heading on down.
Don't cross the border.
We don't need you getting arrested.
- He's my brother.
I can make it across.
- I'll go.
OK.
Go.
Jesus Christ, man.
What the hell happened? Reardon's on the run.
He got away.
Remember one thing.
As a Canadian agent, I'm not even supposed to be down there.
I was never there, you understand? I'm gonna have to get back to you.
Don't put me in this.
Or I'll take you with me.
I'll take you with me.
Were you working with any other agencies, or is it just DEA? - No, it was just us.
- I need everything you got.
It's on its way.
Any idea who to contact in Canada who'll know this guy's affiliations? The Vancouver Organised Crime Unit.
I got their number.
Were you unaware Reardon was armed? We were unaware.
We anticipated it.
We had our informant in a vest and our agents were warned.
You made no attempt to arrest him before shots were fired? No.
We needed the money to be exchanged to complete the deal.
You get me that number for the OCU in Vancouver.
Let me call the office.
I want you to go over the files on Reardon, make sure we don't mention any of our Canadian activities.
Anything we got on him comes from our informant in Portland.
You clean that up before you forward those files to the FBI.
Yeah, Mary, it's Ted.
Sorry I didn't get back to you.
I had to go to Emergency.
- I'm having some tests done.
- What is it? Ah, they don't know.
They got me hooked up to the machines here.
Get back to the office as soon as you can.
We've got a situation.
Dick Royden is dead.
It's gonna be a couple of hours.
As soon as you can.
Hey.
Here's your drink.
Katarina's tucked up all safe and sound.
You believe her version? What we looking at? What's your bet? Who killed Dick Royden? The Americans.
They wanted him dead and unavailable for interrogation.
- You know we'll never prove that.
- You might not want to.
That may cause us more problems than we want to deal with.
Homicide's asking us to turn over all our surveillance tapes.
Make sure Katarina's identity isn't leaked.
May I also suggest that we remove you from any of the reports? Give you a little distance from it.
I'll take the responsibility.
Thank you.
I appreciate the offer.
But I'll take whatever flak comes our way.
Well, if you change your mind, I'm happy to do it.
Sorry to interrupt.
I don't know if you've heard, but Jimmy Reardon's been in a shooting in Seattle.
- When did this happen? - It's on the news now.
the scene at a Seattle restaurant where the confrontation took place.
James Reardon is suspected of shooting and killing Shit, this is the Inspector General.
I got to take it.
An innocent bystander also received fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at thee scene.
Yes, sir, it's a bit of a hot one.
I suspect you'll be facing tough questioning from the Americans.
Yes.
Dick Royden's one of theirs and he's dead.
Whichever way it plays, I think you should be prepared.
I want to brief you on events so far, keep you on the back channels.
I don't care.
I don't give a shit.
Where's the plane now? So have him turn around and head back here.
Where the hell's the plane? It's on the way.
I'm trying to locate a boat.
Hey.
I got a clean phone.
Where are you at? I'm in a park downtown somewhere.
I'm all over the news.
I got to get out of here.
We've got a car on the way.
We're trying to get a boat and a plane down there as fast as we can.
You got to find a hole.
Stay there until we contact you.
I can't wait.
I got to get a car.
I got to get out of here now.
- He needs a car.
- Tell him to steal one.
And he'll need a GPS, so we can find him.
Bob says you go to a gas station and you steal one.
See if you can get yourself a GPS somewhere.
I'll call you later.
OK, Reardon's phone is still live.
Let's get the phone companies chasing him down.
While you're making calls, how about calling my lawyer for me? All right, it's just coming up here.
It's the sound of the room service trolley.
What was that? Again.
Let me hear that again.
Homicide's calling for these surveillance tapes again.
Anything on 'em we don't want anybody to hear? There's a section where you're fingered for outing the mole.
If the Americans get hold of that, they might decide to go after you for exposing him.
They're not gonna come after me.
They'd have to admit he was an American agent.
They'd never admit there's spies here.
No, not publicly.
You can be pretty certain you'll make the top of the Bad Girl List.
Not much we can do about that now.
Go ahead and give Homicide the tapes.
- What's Ogawa say? - The Inspector General's coming out.
I have a government agent in charge of the FBI in Seattle on the line.
It's about Jimmy Reardon.
It's urgent.
- Here we go.
- Here we go.
- Ted.
- Morning.
You look a little rough.
How you feeling? Yeah, better, thanks.
It was just some blockage in my lower intestine.
My office.
This civilian's a through and through.
They won't know until they find the slug if it was Reardon who shot him.
Pretty certain it was one of us.
Let's not jump to conclusions without seeing the evidence.
Hello, Inspector.
Carl Weathers in Seattle calling.
It's about Jimmy Reardon.
I imagine you've heard about what's going on down here.
I heard the basics.
I'll put you on speakerphone, if that's all right.
- I've asked Inspector Altman to sit in.
- He's familiar with Reardon.
What's the latest? Well, Reardon's still on the run.
Looks like he's killed two men: one a DEA agent, the other a civilian.
I imagine he'll try to contact somebody up there.
Possibly make a run for the border.
I'm looking for any background, or any associates he may try to contact.
We could put surveillance on his people and coordinate through Inspector Altman.
I don't expect you have any arguments against his extradition if you catch him up there.
I don't foresee there's gonna be a problem there.
Good.
Thank you very much.
I'll be in touch.
Send them everything we have in Reardon's criminal file.
Be careful to avoid any mention of Reardon being our informant.
Let's keep that to ourselves.
That may be a little difficult to avoid in the long run.
Well, in the short run, which is all we may be here for, do as I ask.
Yeah? Get 'em what they need.
Yes, ma'am.
To recap, this hour's top story.
Canadian Drug lord Jimmy Reardon is wanted for murder.
Reardon is accused of shooting a drug enforcement agent and a bystander at a downtown Seattle restaurant and remains at large despite a massive manhunt Holy shit.
Hey, turn on your TV - the Seattle station.
Jimmy Reardon just shot and killed a DEA agent.
Now, in Seattle.
It's on the news.
Where's the plane? How soon can you get back here? Is this Francine Reardon's room? I'd like to speak with her, please? This is her lawyer speaking.
Phil Coombs.
I'm calling from Vancouver.
I'd like to speak to my client and her daughter.
Tell him to turn around and fly right back here now.
Who's this? And you're in the room right now with Mrs Reardon.
OK, I would like to speak to her please.
You cannot deny me access to speak with my client.
You are obligated to tell her that I am on the phone.
They got a meeting of the clan going on inside.
Rig the phone.
They got TV on, watching the news.
Have they got in touch with Reardon? Couldn't tell.
Reardon's lawyer's in there, arguing on the phone.
- They're obviously on it.
- Sit up front in back and tail anybody that leaves.
OK.
Do you know where you are? - I'm on the I5.
- Where on the I5? - Has he got a GPS? - No.
Have you got a map? Got the map.
OK.
Give me the phone.
Call Sweet and tell her to get a GPS.
OK, hey, bro.
Hang in there.
We're gonna get you out of there.
Get of the I5 at the next turn-off as soon as you can.
Head inland, head east.
You wanna find Highway Nine.
Sweet.
Where are you, babe? Just north of Seattle.
I got hung up at the border.
OK.
You want to get on Mount Baker Highway 542.
Call me back in half an hour.
See if you can stop somewhere and buy a GPS.
Keep on 9, until you reach the turn-off for the Mount Baker Highway.
Done.
OK, I got a plane, but it's gonna be a couple of hours.
It's coming in from Victoria, as soon as the weather clears.
Tell him to get out of that stolen car.
Sweet's coming to meet him.
She's close.
I got a road block.
He's got a road block.
Why in hell did you have surveillance on Royden? He was the subject of an investigation.
You're running an operation on a top CSIS official and I didn't know? - How the hell does that happen? - It was a covert operation.
It was a covert operation.
Under whose supervision? I can't tell you any more until I receive official instructions from the Inspector General.
Was this an officially sanctioned operation? I'm sorry, I can't tell you any more until in receive instructions.
Excuse me one moment.
The Inspector General is in the building, on his way up.
Why don't you show him the way? I'll need a minute or two.
Sorry, go ahead.
I'm reminding you that you're in a probationary period here, Mary.
You're not even yet a CSIS employee.
You've only been seconded to us temporarily.
Until that changes, I'm the ranking goddamned CSIS agent and I demand to be briefed on the situation.
Yes, sir, and the Inspector General has instructed me not to speak to anybody until he arrives and gives me instructions.
- You make sure I'm in that meeting.
- I don't make his appointments.
You'll have to make your own arrangements to see him.
You've hung yourself this time, Mary.
All right, keep me informed.
We're tracking the cell phone signal.
He's heading south on I5.
Excuse me.
You'd better tell someone Reardon didn't shoot those 2 men pretty soon or I will.
I don't think that's a very good idea just now, do you? They were both shot by friendly fire, by your agents.
That's gonna come out sooner or later.
I think later is probably the best scenario.
So you're just gonna sit back and watch on the TV as they gun him down, huh? Like I said, I think that's probably the best scenario.
I hope, for your sake, you think the same, if you catch him up there.
Don't threaten me.
We're in this together.
Just try and remember that.
You gave him a useless gun.
He couldn't kill anybody.
I don't know that.
I didn't give him any gun.
My informant gave him a gun and I was unaware of that.
If it wasn't in working condition, that has nothing to do with me.
Or you.
Right.
So you just give me a call, if he crosses the line.
You hear anything? Is he all right? - I haven't heard.
- I got people in Seattle.
Can I help? We'll let you know if we need you.
Again, I'm here if you need something.
Anything.
I appreciate it.
We have a huge opportunity here.
They're brain dead without Reardon.
That was Dante.
He can smell blood in the water.
I'm on the Mount Baker Highway, about two miles east of Maple Falls.
Sweep the whole joint.
Start it here.
OK, stay where you are.
We're waiting to hear from him.
Sweet's set up.
We're waiting on Jimmy's call.
What's the plan, Mike? I send a couple of boys to scout out the old logging roads.
That's the way we'll go.
We'll walk him over at night, get him up to Billy's farm.
Billy's farm could be hot.
You got a better idea? At least, send somebody up there, right? Make sure it's not under surveillance.
That's already happening.
I think I know what I'm doing.
You're the one who let him go across the line in the first place, huh? Inspector Spalding's line.
I'm sorry, she's with the Inspector General right now.
Sir, this is the transcript of the phone call.
You can see where his handler tells them all to sit tight and send in an operator to help him.
That code originated in 703 area code.
- Virginia, CIA territory.
- Correct.
You believe the CIA are behind the murder of the mole, - if that's what it is? - It may appear the logical choice here.
Rather extreme measures.
Not if you're concerned your mole might get arrested and publicly expose the fact that you've been spying on your so-called best friend, which would cause Washington a little embarrassment.
Perhaps the greater concern would be that we would turn the agent and he would, in turn, reveal the true extent of the American spy network in Canada.
Do we have any evidence of other operators at work here? Not yet.
We were hoping to have the opportunity to either turn or arrest them all, but it's obviously not an option now.
Have we heard from the CIA yet? - Not that I'm aware of.
- Well, if I was in their shoes, I would want this thing to go away as quickly as possible.
I agree.
It does us no good to get into a public pissing match over something we all knows goes on in a way that it has since Caesar.
As the head of CSIS, this is something I will handle through diplomatic channels.
- Yes, sir.
- Good work, rooting him out.
An unfortunate ending, but good work, nonetheless.
I'm in town over night.
Let's get together later for a drink, shall we? - Perfect.
- Good.
- You heard the man.
- Bury this thing deep and fast.
Yes, ma'am.
- Where are you? - I'm on the Baker Mount Highway somewhere between Kendal and Maple Falls.
Sweet's waiting for you at a rest stop two miles east of Maple Falls.
She's got food and a GPS for you.
- She in her car.
- All right.
I'm on my way.
Let's get out of here.
He's off to meet Sweet.
Mike and Tremblay at the back of the club now.
Here they come.
You lose this deal, don't bother coming in to work tomorrow.
Hey, where's your boyfriend? - Which one? - The fucking banker, where is he? He's sleeping it off at my place.
Don't let him leave until I send somebody to get him.
Understand? He's not going anywhere.
They're holding Francine and Stella in Seattle.
I gotta go and bail 'em out.
Stay in touch.
We may need you.
Hey, Red.
I'm gonna need a favour from you.
Mike's back at the club.
Thank you.
Looks like they're orchestrating things from inside the Chick A Dee.
- Can we put an operator in there? - I'll see what I can do.
Just come from autopsy on your American mole.
And? There's evidence of a fresh injection in his neck, some minor bruising at the throat.
Anything else? We sent a loco over to his family home in Washington DC to inform his parents.
Their son Richard Royden died of meningitis when he was 2 years old.
So we have no idea who this guy really was.
It's pretty much a dead end, then.
Pretty much.
No calls from the CIA? Not even from CSIS.
You're obviously doing a good job of burying this thing.
I took a look at your surveillance tape transcripts.
I appreciate the absence of any black lining.
There didn't seem to be any matters of confidence there.
There was one reference to his belief that it was you who outed him - as a mole.
- Speculation on his part.
You have no concerns that your negligence might have caused his death? Then I guess that explains why you're on that side of the desk and I'm over here.
I'll let you know the results of the toxicology when they eventually roll in.
Thank you.
OK, he's here.
OK, you head straight north, as soon as you can.
I'll tell you where to go.
- Sweet.
- Jimmy.
Call Sweet.
She's got your brother.
Stay in touch.
- It's Mike.
- It's Mike.
Got a GPS? Remember that tulip farm when we first ran across the line? Well, that's where you're going.
I'm gonna be on the other side and up the slope a little bit.
Here's your GPS co-ordinates.
49 degrees, two minutes north, 122 degrees, five minutes west.
- Thanks for coming.
- I appreciate the invitation.
You know, we're still looking for someone to head up CSIS up here.
I do.
Which is what I'd like to talk about.
I'd like your opinion about Mr Mallaby.
Do you think he's capable of running Asia Pacific for us? - He's very capable.
- That's the general consensus I've been getting from Boudreau as well.
