Intelligence (2006) s02e03 Episode Script

A Man Underground

Previously This is set up from start to finish.
Reardon goes down for the killing if his gun doesn't show up.
This hasn't been fired recently.
Francine thinks I'm working behind your back.
You'd be shining shoes on Hastings without Jimmy! The inspector was organising a raid on the nightclub.
- We have warrants! - I'd like to see it, please.
- You can trust me.
- I don't.
One of your boys firebombed the Two Bit.
Mike's gonna pay you a visit.
I gotta take care of this before Dante retaliates.
Welcome home.
We need good intelligence.
Ronnie's up early sweeping the sidewalk.
He's sleeping at the club these days.
You made the paper.
Page six.
- Any news on Reardon? - SFA.
My guess is he's up country hiding in a bunker.
You got Ronnie meeting with somebody out front now.
What's up? We got raided.
I think they might have planted bugs.
- Check it out? - Sure.
- Start with my office.
- You got it.
- Morning.
- Morning.
Got you a coffee.
OK, don't buy two coffees.
Just one at a time.
Sorry.
I got them two blocks away.
You gotta behave like you're here alone.
- OK.
- Do you need anything else? - Got you the papers.
- OK.
Thanks.
I just wanted to say goodbye.
We've got the ballistics report on Reardon's gun.
And? This gun didn't kill anybody.
It hasn't been fired recently.
Reardon could have cleaned before he gave it to us.
- There's no firing pin.
- No firing pin? Correct.
See for yourself.
Full clip, but no firing pin.
- Was he given it like this? - Have to ask him.
- He couldn't killed anyone with it.
- Not with that gun.
Which means what now? Somebody didn't want him to have a working gun.
An informant? Who gave it to him? Alex Morgan.
This is all we have.
Morgan.
Morgan was afraid Reardon would use it on him, so he gave him a useless gun.
- Is that what happened? - Right.
Are you saying the informant deliberately provided it to provoke an armed confrontation? - Hey, man, how you doing? - Good.
- How are you? - Who's he talking to? Don't recognise the voice.
- Any word on Jimmy? - No, nothing.
I'm worried some cop or a citizen might have shot him already.
Yeah.
You think he's dead? Shoot.
Sorry, Ron.
That's heavy.
Maybe he's in Mexico.
Yeah, let's hope so.
OK, well, take it easy - let me know if I can help.
- Thanks.
Sounds like Reardon's gone to ground.
Let me know if you hear anything worthwhile.
Do the upstairs.
Dressing rooms, everywhere.
Yo! Do you got some time? I've got the stuff.
What is it? A fire in here or something? Firebombers.
What you got? A few things you might be interested in.
- Yo! These all brand new? - All new, man.
- What do want for them? - All of them? 10,000.
OK, done.
Come back later and I'll have all the cash for you.
Nice doing business with you.
Mikey, show the gentleman out.
Thanks.
Where did you say the informant was being held? Seattle General, recovering from his gunshot wound.
See if you can get in to see him.
If you can confirm he deliberately removed that firing pin, this whole thing gets turned on its head.
Who should I clear it with States side? Nobody.
Better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.
Just badge your way in.
Yes, ma'am.
- Morning.
- Where are you headed? Doctor's appointment.
Running late.
What's the update? No sign of Reardon.
We got a bug in the Chick A Dee office.
His partner Ronnie thinks he's dead or in Mexico.
And where's our FBI friend this morning? Er, he's on his way.
We're going on another raid.
Shake the bushes.
I need to speak with him.
As I'm sure you know, I've been promoted to run the spy service here and I'm recommending you step up as Acting Head of Organised Crime, taking over my duties.
That's pretty unexpected.
Thanks.
We'll go over details later.
In the meantime, stay on top of the FBI.
I don't want Jim Reardon's blood on my hands.
Thanks for the vote of confidence.
I need to speak with Agent Weathers when he lands.
Something's wrong about their case against Reardon.
- How so? - We'll see.
Just got the one bug in the office.
Everything else is clean.
- You should go yank it out of there.
- Sure, no problem.
- Hey.
- You all right? - What's happening? - We found a bug upstairs.
They probably planted it when they raided us.
You shouldn't stay here.
They'll come back.
I've just got some stuff to take care of and then I'm gone.
You talked to Mike about this Dante shit? I got a call in, but he ain't returning.
You gotta talk to him.
I can't.
You'll have to.
You gotta run things now.
Things have changed.
You gotta step up.
Meet Dante.
Straighten him out before he goes after Mike.
You've gotta make peace with Dante.
All right.
- What about the bank situation? - Coombs is gonna talk to us.
OK, good.
And my travel? What about the travel? - He got you a new passport.
- Good, OK.
Anything else? You gotta get rid of that girl next door.
Send her away.
It's done.
It's George.
What's going on? Congratulations are in order.
I just got promoted to the head of the Organised Crime Unit.
Yeah, congratulations.
- Is that gonna help us find Reardon? - It removes a couple of hurdles.
- What's the word down there? - It's not good.
I'm being set up to take the heat, so it's my career on the line.
I'll have to call you back.
You find Reardon, you gotta give me a chance to set this straight.
Yeah.
Call you in five.
- You ready to roll? - The inspector wants a word first.
What do we know about the DEA agent George Williams? - What would you like to know? - Is he a credible witness? I have no reason not to trust what he says.
How did the weapon allegedly used in in the shooting end up with Reardon? I believe it says in the informant's statement that he supplied it to Mr Reardon at Mr Reardon's request.
- I'd like to know if that's true.
- Where's this coming from? You heard a version of events other than the witnesses I've interviewed? I'd like to interview the DEA agent and the informant, see if their statements support each other's.
Have you been in contact with Mr Reardon? No, Mr Reardon's lawyer.
I'll see if I can arrange those interviews for you.
I'd appreciate the cooperation.
Open the fucking door! - Is Ronnie here? - He's here.
What happened? It's Stella.
- They kicked her out of school.
- Why would they? The school doesn't want her there.
Everyone's afraid something will happen there and none of her friends are allowed to talk to her because of the press.
Shit, Frankie, that's no good, but I don't know what I can do.
You can put me in touch with Jim.
Stella needs to talk to her father.
He's not staying in touch.
What can I do? Bull shit! Bullshit! Carry this all the time.
I want you sleeping with it, you know? I want you ready to use it at all times.
- What's going on? - Need to talk to Mike.
Go see who that it is.
It's a couple of Disciples.
- Is Mike back there? - Yeah, in the office.
Incoming police! Don't move! Don't move! Police! Stay where you are! Don't move! Everybody on the floor! All your asses on the floor! What seems to be the problem, Officer? Move! Those two are Disciple associates, both packing.
Yeah, it's on the wagon now.
You tell Dante we're looking for Jimmy Reardon and we'd appreciate his help.
Tell your boss I'm gonna be giving him a call about that, yeah? That should stir the shit a little.
Take them outside and let them go.
You helped your brother escape across the border.
Did we join the United States last night? I don't think the FBI has jurisdiction up here.
Are you aware your brother killed two men, one a federal agent? I saw the news.
It's like the weather report.
You can't rely on it.
He faces the death penalty.
You'll face the same for helping him, which is how it works down south where you and your brother will be charged.
Let's go.
You're gonna be charged.
You're taking orders from the FBI? Now I know this is bullshit! I'm shoving you in the trunk of his car and he can do whatever the hell he wants with you! This is the infamous Chick A Dee strip club, headquarters of fugitive Jimmy Reardon, out of which Reardon is said to run a drug empire estimated to be conservatively worth $30 to $50 million a year.
- Hey, go fuck yourself! - Get out of here! Ronnie's doing an interview.
Come on in.
- I need a legal opinion.
- All right.
Here's the scenario.
There's a law-enforcement sting set up to capture a drug dealer during a business transaction.
At this transaction an informant, at the request of the dealer, - provides the dealer with a gun.
- This is the Reardon situation? OK.
This gun was disarmed prior to the informant giving it to the dealer.
The appearance of the weapon provokes the drug agents to draw and fire, during which one drug agent is then killed, in friendly fire.
Is there a case that the informant who provided the disarmed weapon is responsible for the homicides that subsequently occurred? Well, without knowing all the details, there might be a case for culpable homicide in furtherance of another felony.
Write me up an opinion as soon as you can, and remember this took place in an American jurisdiction.
Got a couple of guys from the Bahama bank coming in next week.
We should sit down, talk about the deal, see what you're OK with.
You know I think we should go ahead and buy the bank for obvious reasons, but it also offers a safe offshore haven to protect your assets from any seizure under the Proceed of Crime legislation.
Do we know what the bankers want? Is the deal in trouble? They just wanna make sure the deal's gonna go through, discreetly.
You got a good front man in Hogarty, good credentials.
Except he's in rehab trying to get off the nose candy and back to work.
They suspended him.
- When the fuck did that happened? - Yesterday.
It's OK.
He'll be presentable and as long as we show his face to these guys as the face of the bank, I think they'll be fine with it.
All right.
Jesus Christ! What else? What do we do about all the automatic teller machines we got? We give Dante all the Atms he wants.
He can have all of Vancouver, if he moves his money offshore to our bank in the Bahamas.
Beautiful.
What else, Phil? I got a call from your girl over at CSIS.
She needs to talk to you face to face, says it's urgent.
If you're asking, I say no.
She says it's about the gun in Seattle.
Let's find out what she wants.
My travel, got that figured yet? Got you an Irish passport, some credit cards.
It's all coming.
- I'm looking for patient Alex Morgan.
- Right over there.
Inspector Kiniski with the Vancouver OCU to interview the witness.
Inspector Kiniski with the OCU, here to ask Mr Morgan a couple of questions.
Agent Weathers cleared it.
You up for that? It's concerning the weapon you supplied for Mr Reardon.
- Agent Weathers - Where did you get that weapon? - Hold on a second! - Don't recall.
- I'm checking in.
- Sure.
Did you check the gun was operational first? Were you aware the weapon could not be fired? Stop the interview! - Did your DEA handler give it to you? - Stop! Don't answer that! You, out! Is there a problem? Agent Weathers didn't approve this interview.
Oh, gosh! There must be crossed wires! You take sugar? I need to find Jimmy Reardon.
You're asking the wrong guy.
There's gonna be a crackdown coming on you guys sometime soon.
You might want a friend in your corner.
Haven't heard a thing.
You realise there'd be advantages to your organisation after Reardon was out of the picture? I understand what you say.
I don't have a clue where Jimmy might be.
All I've heard is rumours.
What sort of rumours? That he's dead already and this whole man hunt is to cover your own asses.
- Where did you hear that? - I watch the news.
It looks like the DEA walked Jimmy right through a shootout.
Dead or alive, Jimmy's out of business, so we're not in the competition any more.
What's the point of helping you find him? Like I said, you might need a friend some time.
I'll keep that in mind.
Jim can't meet with you.
He's out of the country already.
I can get a message to him if you want.
I'm giving you this ballistics report.
That gun you handed over does not have a firing pin.
It wasn't capable of firing.
You should be trying to interview the informant, hear his version.
He's being held in Seattle General.
He has some very interesting things to say about this.
Thanks for the tip.
Throw him out of the country! And no more interviews unless I'm there! You running my goddamn investigation for me now? - Let's go in my office and talk.
- You can tell me what's going on, because I feel you're collaborating with the other side.
May I remind you you're here at our invitation and I have an obligation to also independently investigate the charges against Mr Reardon.
What's this about the gun? Are you in contact with Reardon? I told you, I've had contact through his lawyer.
- What's with the gun? - I've had it checked - through our ballistics lab.
- You have the gun? I have the gun allegedly provided by the informant.
"Allegedly provided by the informant"? - Do you know anything about guns? - Just make your point.
Mr Reardon was given this gun by Mr Morgan upon his arrival in Seattle at Mr Reardon's request.
My inspector interviewed Morgan You should have told me.
That was a bullshit interview.
- No court anywhere will accept that.
- The informant told us he received the gun from Agent Williams and did not take the firing pin out, so that leads me to think it was Agent Williams who removed it.
Why? - Where did you get this gun? - Mr Reardon's lawyer.
We don't know it's the gun Mr Reardon used.
But we know that if it is, he was incapable of killing anyone with it, and you'd want to be able to disprove that because I have no doubt Mr Reardon's lawyer will contest the charges.
What the hell's going on with Dante? Thanks to get me accross the border, Mike.
Thanks to get me accross the border, Mike.
- What is going on with Dante? - Same old shit.
He was pushing, so I pushed back.
He was trying to take advantage.
You've gotta cool that down.
Don't let him provoke you.
I know.
I just had to push back.
Because I'll be in Costa Rica.
That's right! You could run the ship from there.
We got phones, email.
I can come visit.
Ronnie's gonna be in charge.
Who got you across the border while Ronnie was shitting his drawers? Was Ronnie shitting his pants, or what, Bob? I'm not gonna argue.
I need you to set up a new US distribution arm.
We can't use any of the old people.
- I'm in charge of distribution? - US distribution.
Maybe Winston? Winston? - He's connected.
- Winston? You get Rene to check him out before you talk to him.
Keep the flow going.
We need the US.
They're our big market and we'll need cash flow fast.
Yeah, OK.
So when do you leave? - Next couple of days.
- Don't leave without saying goodbye.
I won't.
Make sure Lorna leaves, will you? - Finally some good news.
- All right.
I made some calls to the guys out east.
They're sending us some cash, about 3.
5 mill.
Courier's coming tomorrow.
We could start putting money into the Atms again.
It's all gonna work out.
Makes a guy think about retiring.
Next couple of years, get this bank deal right, we'll be able to walk away.
You gonna see Francine and Stella before you go? You know, she thinks I ratted you out to take over.
- It's Francine.
What can I say? - It's a little annoying.
I didn't tell you, but Stella got taken out of school.
Some teachers thought it was a good idea.
I gotta see them before I go.
- Can you figure that out? - Sure.
Lorna.
- Hey, Bob.
- Come on.
I'll take you to the ferry.
I'm not going to the ferry.
You're getting out of Jimmy's hair.
I don't think so! Get in the car, Lorna.
I don't feel like it! You're not going back to the club.
I'll do whatever I feel like doing, OK? I just spoke to the Attorney General.
He's instructed me to turn over to the FBI any information we might have concerning any confidential relationship with Mr Reardon and to report any recent communications with him or his legal representatives.
Somebody in Washington obviously starting pulling the strings.
What should I tell him? We don't have any relationship with Mr Reardon, so we've nothing to provide.
What's going on? I interviewed the DEA informant in Seattle.
He says the DEA set up Reardon to be gunned down.
This is gonna be big and nasty! Watch your back.
I've asked that Reardon's lawyer gets a written statement from the informant saying that the gun he gave Reardon he got from the DEA.
Good.
You'll need evidence from another source, otherwise they'll say he's just a rat.
Could you run the gun through the US system? Maybe we can find out where it came from and how it ended up with the DEA.
Yes, ma'am.
I'm in Vancouver.
I don't think coming here was a good idea.
Reardon's up here and you're gonna help me find him.
That's not gonna change anything.
You fucking This all goes away if Reardon goes away.
You're not getting the picture here.
We have the gun you gave Reardon.
They know it wasn't operable when you gave it to the informant.
Your story that Reardon shot those two men is not gonna play.
Did you say something about that gun? I wasn't even there! Your informant, in his statement, he said you gave him the gun.
I don't care what he says! Read the writing on the wall and get yourself a lawyer.
You've a reasonable defence.
Nobody will fault you for rigging the gun.
You got a good argument, but the tide has turned on this! Mary has this thing between her teeth and she won't let it go! This could all go away if I can just get a chance at Reardon.
Jesus! That's not realistic.
I can flush him out.
Do me a favour.
Go to bed and sleep on it.
You sucked me into this hole and you're gonna help me climb out.
I wanna know where Reardon's family lives.
I don't have that information with me.
I've got notes of every time you and I talked about getting Reardon over the border and I don't think we want that coming out, do we? You find out where his family lives.
Excuse me, what happened to the prisoner that was here? - He's been moved.
- Is he still in the hospital? I don't believe so.
I think the Sheriff removed him.
- Know where they took him? - No.
- Did they tell you where he was taken? - They say they don't know.
I'll see what I can find out.
George Williams is in town.
I just spoke with him.
Why is he up here? I think he's come looking for Reardon.
He seems to be having a serious breakdown.
Do you know where he is right now? I have to talk to him.
He's in a hotel downtown.
We have a couple of questions.
- What are you drinking? - Not right now.
- What can I help you with? - I have a statement from Morgan saying you provided him a gun and explained the gun had been disarmed and that you asked him to give it to Mr Reardon.
That's bullshit.
I lost a man.
I'm responsible for what happened, but I did not give anyone a gun, rigged or not.
Any reason why the informant would say you had? He's a shit-house rat trying to get off charges.
He'll say what he thinks you wanna hear.
If the informant was in your custody prior to meeting Mr Reardon, you would have sure he wasn't carrying a weapon? He wasn't under my control the entire time.
He picked it up when he had the opportunity.
Had he told you Mr Reardon had requested him to bring a gun? Yeah, and I said no way.
Then why would the informant give Mr Reardon a gun? I guess he didn't wanna upset Mr Reardon and if he disarmed the gun, I guess it was so Reardon couldn't shoot him.
You gotta remember this guy owed Reardon $2 million.
He was afraid Reardon would shoot him right at the table.
Look, I'm trying to be cooperative, but I lost a man, a friend, and I'm losing patience with the way this thing is headed and resent the implication.
All right.
Thank you.
I've heard enough.
Go back home, get a good lawyer.
You're gonna need one.
- Yes.
- I got seriously bad news.
The informant just died in the cells.
He won't be making more statements.
I'm sorry, what? They're saying he suffered a heart attack in the cells.
The statement you have won't do it.
All right.
I'll call you later.
Goodnight.
What do you think now? I think you're harbouring Reardon, and if I find out that's true, your career is over.
Morning, Inspector.
Congratulations on your promotion.
Right.
Thanks.
The informant died in FBI custody last night.
Heart attack.
- That's unfortunate.
- Get the ME's report, yeah? This just came in.
The gun in question was sold from the factory to a retail outlet in Seattle.
I called, but they won't tell me who they sold it to over the phone.
Want me to go there? Reardon's lawyer might be there.
I'll call him.
Ronnie's out sweeping the sidewalk again.
Tremblay just rolled up.
The cops just raided the shipping office.
They're turning it upside down, looking for Jimmy We got a courier going there with three mill.
Tell him to stay away.
He was there when they got raided.
They got it.
They got the cash? Been trying to find out what happened.
They got the whole three mill.
What, I've got another rat? How did they know when it was coming? Bad luck.
They were looking for you.
- We need that cash to fill the Atms.
- Tell Dante to loan us some cash.
He already knows we're hurting.
This could let him run right over us.
See him, explain what's happening.
We need the cash or everything crashes.
Francine's coming by the club later.
You OK with that? - Got a minute? It's important.
- Can we talk later? I got a lot on.
I'm pregnant.
That's the best news I've ever heard! You're happy about it, right? - Right? - I don't know.
All right.
We'll talk in a bit, OK? I really gotta fly.
It's Phil Coombs calling.
I talked to the guy that sold the gun.
I was supposed to meet him downstairs for breakfast.
I can hear the TV's on.
Maybe I didn't get the right room.
- Have you seen him this morning? - No.
I wouldn't recognise him.
I tried calling the room and left a message.
It's the hotel manager.
I need to get in your room.
My God! Go call the police.
Shit! I just spoke with Mr Reardon's lawyer.
He's spoken with the gun retailer in Seattle who sold this gun to a Rodney Judd about a year and a half ago.
I don't know if you're familiar with that name? No.
Should I be? Mr Reardon's lawyer spoke with Mr Judd and took a statement.
Mr Judd's admitted to being a registered informant with the DEA.
He named his DEA handler for the past two years, George Williams.
Are you trying to say that proves Mr Williams got the gun from him? No, but Mr Judd's statement that he gave to Mr Reardon's lawyer does.
Second page.
You can see where he says he gave the gun to Mr Williams two weeks ago when Mr Williams asked him to find him something.
He swears the gun was in good working order when he gave it to him.
Yes, Ted? George Williams committed suicide last night.
Thanks for bringing her by.
The Feds were here to see me asking me where Jimmy was.
They got no clue, so wherever you're hiding him, you're doing a good job.
They took down the shipyards this morning, caught our courier with a bag.
Three million cash.
That money was supposed to service the Atms.
Now we're short.
Jimmy wanted me to offer you a deal.
He's still pulling the strings.
Good.
You can have all the bank machines in Vancouver.
Really? What's the deal? We're looking for short-term cash flow, keep the machines fed.
- What are we talking about? - Interim cash, two million tops.
I can give it to you 15 points I'm doing it cos I like the deal.
We'll take half a mill at 15.
Then we'll need to work out the rest of the deal.
Want me to drop it off? No.
Let me know.
I'll have somebody pick it up.
Not the same courier who got taken down this morning? No.
We've still got to talk about the rats you got in your family.
- We're gonna take care of that.
- I'll have the cash in two hours.
Give Jimmy my regards.
Best of luck, wherever he is.
Thanks for the help.
Send me the coroner's report on Williams.
Will do.
Take it easy.
Good news for your client.
The FBI are dropping the homicide charges.
The other charges are still pending.
There you go.
Hey, Stella, will you take over for me? Sure.
Stay off the hard stuff, will you? Good to see you guys! Phil, good to see you, man.
That's beautiful! Don't burn the house down! I was just upset when I called you those things.
It's all water under the bridge.
I've been thinking about names Who's this? That's Bob's new girlfriend.
Looks kind of young.
A little bit.
Right! Jimmy! Let's hear it!
