Intelligence (2006) s02e09 Episode Script

A Woman Inside

- Is that this guy's truck? - I think so.
It was still running when we arrived.
We ran the plates.
It's registered to a Duncan MacNamara.
- Anybody see what happened? - That woman over there.
She says she saw him come from a coffee shop on the corner.
A black pick-up truck parked down the block suddenly pulled forward.
The passenger shot him half a dozen times then walked over, shot him again twice.
- What time was this? - Just after 6am.
It looks like somebody wanted to be thorough.
I'm Detective Ogawa, Vancouver homicide.
- Morning.
- Morning.
Things are heating up in the dope trade.
One of Dante's boys just got killed in a drive-by this morning.
I'm gonna take a look.
I'll let you know.
- The brief you requested.
- Thank you.
How are your discussions with Dante and the Vietnamese going? As soon as I know something, I'll call you.
We need this to be hurried along.
There's been blood spilled between them so talking them into working together may take finessing.
Do what you can.
It needs to happen.
Yeah, I heard you.
You heard the news? One of Dante's guys got gunned down this morning.
- What happened? - Don't know.
Dante said he'd be late for the meeting cos his boy Duncan got killed.
Did he say who might've done it? He doesn't know.
This might help him wrap his head around the need to partner up with Phan.
Maybe.
It's not gonna be easy.
He's never been a team player.
- He's used to being king.
- Those days are over.
The monarchy's dead.
He's gotta find himself some allies.
- Hope you can make him see it that way.
- He'll come around.
I got a guy sitting on this DEA guy's hotel.
He's gonna follow him round, see what he's up to.
Stay close to the club for a while.
No problem.
How's Frankie doing? You get a chance to talk to her last night? It's not so good.
- Is Stella still over at Sweet's? - They're having breakfast.
- Frankie! - I'm in a hurry.
- I've got things to do.
- What's your plan? I'm enrolling Stella at St Anne's.
I'm going there tomorrow.
She should see a private tutor.
She needs to be with kids who don't know who she is.
And when they realise she's my daughter and they don't want her? You'd put her through that? She's not gonna be registered under your name.
You changed her name without asking me? It's her safety you should be concerned about.
The world doesn't revolve around just you.
- Whose name is she gonna take? - My mother's maiden name.
Nobody'll know she's your daughter.
Those days are over.
And the visiting situation? Is she allowed home at the weekends? They discourage it for the first six months.
- I don't like the sound of that.
- She needs to get out from under you.
- What does that mean? - You're smothering her.
- The same way you did me.
- Can you see that I'm trying to do everything I can to get out of this business? You've said that for 15 years.
15 years.
That and, "I'm sorry.
I'll never hurt you again.
" But you do.
Over and over again.
You'll never get out of it and you'll never change.
So that's it? You park her in a boarding school and take off? Too late.
It's over.
Go back to your little tart and tell her your bullshit stories.
I don't believe them any more, and I don't care.
Get your hands off my door.
Have you got everything? Yes.
That's it.
- Mr Mallaby's here.
- Thank you.
- Mr Mallaby to see you.
- Please send him in.
Good morning, sir.
What can I do for you? Prior to your appointment as director, CSIS has had excellent relations with the CIA.
We've had a long history of co-operation and collaboration.
- I wasn't aware that had changed.
- According to Agent Cruickshank, your last meeting with him was somewhat hostile.
- What is it you're asking for? - Some direct answers.
Do we have an operator working on the inside of the Blackmire group? You understand the protocol where operators or informants are involved.
Only those in a need-to-know position have access to that information.
The CIA are in that position.
They're conducting an investigation into the Blackmire group.
They don't want our operators or informants muddying the waters, risking their investigations.
Their operation takes priority over ours? Is that the message you were asked to deliver? I'm telling you that co-operation is required here.
I agree.
CSIS and the CIA should have a co-operative relationship.
Good.
In the interest of maintaining that relationship, you should put that into practice by being forthright with Agent Cruickshank.
The CIA has set an unco-operative precedent with me.
They were given intelligence by the FBI about our Blackmire operation which was not intended for anyone else beyond the FBI.
When I inquired what the nature of their interest in Blackmire was, Agent Cruickshank refused to tell me.
We rely on the CIA for a great deal of our intelligence.
If you challenge them, they tend to turn off the tap.
I'm conducting an investigation on behalf of Financial Investigations into Blackmire's tax evasion scheme.
I take my direction from them, not the FBI.
Or, God forbid, the CIA.
If Financial tells me to pull the plug on my Blackmire operation, I'll pull it.
I'll speak to Cruickshank and relay your message.
Please tell him to call me directly.
He doesn't have to go through an assistant.
Morning, sir.
Have you got a minute? Yes, sir.
You have an operator working on the inside of the Blackmire Group.
Not that I'm aware of.
But you've been receiving intelligence briefings on Blackmire.
I'm not involved in that file, if there is one, sir.
In the present chain of command, you're obligated to report to me, if requested.
You're CSIS employee, not Mary's personal flat catcher.
If you become aware of anything involving the Blackmire Group file, inform me.
Yes, sir.
And distribute this to our analysts.
Have 'em put together a brief on Blackmire's global activities.
Particularly where their acquisition of water rights is concerned.
Make sure Mr Mallaby doesn't get wind of it.
- It's for my eyes only.
- Yes, ma'am.
- You just spoke with Mr Mallaby.
- Yes, I did.
He asked me if we had an operator inside Blackmire.
- I told him it wasn't my file.
- Have you heard from that operator? Not yet, no.
She would've landed in Mexico City late last night.
How long since she last contacted us? Going on 24 hours.
I don't trust the CIA to keep their nose out of our business.
If you're concerned for her safety, perhaps I should call our liaison in Mexico City and send someone over to the hotel to watch her back if necessary.
Good idea.
I'll call Cruickshank at the CIA and tell him we're backing off of our investigation.
But we are still continuing our operation? Thank you, ma'am.
- What happened here? - It looks like a drive-by.
Two guys in a black pick-up took this guy out at about 6am.
- It's one of Dante's guys? - Apparently number two or three.
It'll shake things up for them a little.
What's happening on the dope scene that I should know of? There's an American crew in town.
Apparently growing fast.
They've been stepping on the Disciples' turf.
There've been tit-for-tat shootings at the Vanya Hotel.
Could be the beginning of an escalation.
Gang war? Unless something happens to prevent it, I'm afraid so.
Do you know how large this American crew is? Who their leadership is? I've heard rumours they're doing business with a Latin gang that moved here from LA three years ago they're offering to pay higher prices.
All right.
Let me know if you hear anything more.
- Likewise.
- Yeah.
Gracias.
Mary needs to talk to you.
It's Julianna.
Are you alone? - Yes.
- Listen carefully.
Tell Mr Browne you've got a family emergency in Vancouver and you have to return immediately.
- What is wrong? - It's a precaution.
- Oh, my God.
- Is he there with you now? - Yes.
- When you hang up, tell him your mother's in hospital and she's dying.
- What's wrong? - My mother is not well.
Return on the next plane available.
Thank you.
Please tell her that I'm on my way.
It's OK.
It's all right.
Call our liaison in Mexico City.
Have them make sure Julianna gets on the plane safely.
Yes, ma'am.
Do you think this American crew shot your guy? I got no clue.
None.
Losing Duncan's put a big hole in my downtown crew.
Now's a good time to talk to Phan to figure out a way for you guys to work.
Forget it, I'm not gonna meet him.
Phan could be the guy who shot my nephew.
You got even when you killed his cousin.
- Maybe he put the hit out on Duncan? - Phan wants this deal.
He's not gonna do anything to screw it up.
It works for both of you.
You've gotta wrap your head around it.
Don't trust him.
We don't share the same values.
- He values a dollar like you.
- That's not what I mean.
How can I do business with someone who doesn't value life like we do? He cares as much as anybody else.
I'm not gonna be good in a meeting with this guy.
I'll wring his neck.
That's why Jim's brokering the deal.
You don't have to break bread, just put a deal together.
Or you'll be clipping coupons while dope trade is stolen from under your nose.
OK.
Put it together.
If we do put you two together for a meeting, then it's just you and Phan.
No entourage.
OK.
Set it up.
Any word on Julianna.
Our liaison in Mexico City went by the hotel.
Julianna's already checked out.
He apologises for not getting over there as fast as he could've, but he was in a meeting.
There was no-one else he could've sent? Apparently not.
OK.
Check the airline.
See if she's booked on a flight.
I did.
She's not on any commercial flight out of Mexico City.
- Have you tried calling her? - No answer.
Your man from the CIA is back.
For Christ's sake.
Let me know if you hear anything at all.
Yes, ma'am.
- Agent Cruickshank from the CIA.
- Come on in.
- What brings you by today? - I got your message from Mr Mallaby.
- I thought we should clear the air.
- Great.
Good to hear.
Sorry we got off on the wrong foot.
I talked to Financial Investigations and told them of your concerns, that you're running a parallel investigation on Blackmire and you've requested we back off.
I expect to get some sort of response from them today.
In the meantime, you've pulled your operator from the investigation? As I told you, we never managed to get an operator inside.
So there's no problem there.
Thank you.
We appreciate it.
I don't suppose you can share the CIA's interest in Blackmire with me.
It's money-laundering operations we're interested in.
That's all I can say.
Will you be sharing your intelligence on that with us? When the time comes, we'll be very happy to.
Excellent.
Good to hear we're pushing in the same direction.
So you'll be talking with your financial task force, getting back to me? As soon as I hear.
- Thanks for your co-operation.
- Any time.
OK.
So this gets better by the minute.
The CIA, if they're to be believed, is investigating Blackmire's money-laundering operations.
So they'll eventually learn about Reardon's involvement in the bank.
Yes.
We'll have an operator smack in the middle of what the CIA is up to.
If we manage to keep Julianna in the game, and Reardon goes along with it, we've got two operators working.
Congratulations, ma'am.
We're in the big leagues now.
We certainly are.
Nothing further on Julianna? Not yet, no.
Mr Walters, Financial Investigations.
Line two.
Thank you.
Hello, sir.
Yes.
Thank you.
I've just had another visit from the CIA and I'm feeling a bit of pressure to back off this Blackmire thing.
I was hoping we'd be able to co-operate and back off.
It'll be a nice break.
It's a good school.
I went to live with my aunt and uncle when I was your age and for the first day or so I thought I would die of loneliness.
Then I met the kids at the school and it was the best thing that happened to me.
I know.
Send me pictures of the baby when it comes, OK? I'll see you before that happens.
Maybe Ronnie and I will come over - for a visit? - That'll be great.
Study hard, OK? Not everybody gets a chance to go to a good school.
- Love you.
- I love you too.
Thank you.
I'll call you when I get back.
- Take care of yourselves, OK? - Don't worry.
We're survivors.
Travel safe.
The CIA are investigating the Blackmire Group's money-laundering operations.
Jesus Christ.
They'll end up coming straight to the front door of my bank.
Right.
That's not good.
I just got into this bank deal.
Now I gotta get out.
Not necessarily.
I think I can work it so you can stay in.
Are you crazy? How are you gonna deal with the CIA? Still waiting you to deal with the DEA.
- You'll be protected.
- From the CIA? How? - I can cut a deal for you.
- No way.
Can I at least talk to them? Propose a deal which would allow you to continue banking and making money if you agree to get them information on Blackmire and only Blackmire.
I don't wanna do it.
How can I move money around with the CIA looking over my shoulder? It's too late for that.
They're already looking at you.
You know that for sure? - You've been talking to them.
- I did.
They know all about your bank already.
If you don't co-operate, they'll take you down with everybody else.
Listen.
You're suddenly a very valuable asset to them.
You're right in the middle of Blackmire's money-laundering scheme.
You can write your own ticket.
We need people like you.
You're in the middle.
You know what's going on.
Your intelligence is invaluable.
They get up every morning and pray for an intelligence source like you to come through the door.
Just like I do.
Believe me, you can make this work for you.
If you give the CIA what they want, they're gonna give you immunity.
Think about what that means.
OK.
Here's the deal I want.
If I do this for the CIA, I get a free pass for ever.
- Wherever I am.
- I'll take it to them.
I'll see what they say.
Is the wire up on Julianna's apartment? Right.
Good.
If there's any activity in the apartment, let me know immediately.
The queen's requested we pay her a visit.
- What's it about? - I've no idea.
What I'm about to tell you goes no further.
I wanna make Jimmy Reardon's Bahamas Bank the go-to bank for money launderers worldwide.
Tell me what my problems are gonna be.
Your number one problem is gonna be the CIA and how they react to it.
I don't imagine they're gonna want to have you in charge.
I don't care what they want or how they feel about it.
They won't know.
OK.
- How exactly do you see this working? - As simply as possible.
Reardon's bank is already a gangster bank.
It's got an experienced president in Gordon Evans who's run massive laundering schemes for 20 years.
He has the reputation to go with it.
All we have to do is help him get the word out that the Bahamas Bank is wide open for business.
Then we sit back and watch who comes through the door.
Every deposed dictator, coke baron, corporate thief and arms dealer in the world would open an account.
We'll have a window on where the money's coming from and where it's going.
We'll be dead centre in a global intelligence matrix.
We won't have to beg other agencies for intel and spend years questioning its accuracy.
Do we really have the resources to get into this game and play - at the level you're talking about? - That's the beauty of it.
With Reardon co-owning the bank, we're already in the game.
We don't have to build an elaborate cover for him.
He's a player - and everyone knows it.
- How does Reardon feel about all this? I think he needs time to wrap his head around it but he'll see the benefits.
You realise what you're doing amounts to running a counter-intelligence game against the CIA.
You can't win a game sitting on the bench.
I'm in.
OK.
What the hell.
It sounds like fun.
Thank you.
I appreciate the confidence.
Take some time and get back to me with your thoughts on how to proceed.
Yes, ma'am.
This whole having a kid is putting me through some serious changes.
It's like suddenly 'click', the penny drops.
I felt the same way when I had my first kid.
Suddenly everything falls into place.
Why we're here.
- Exactly.
- In the end, all you really got - is family, right? - Absolutely.
Phan's here.
Give me a couple of minutes.
I gotta take him upstairs.
Things sure are changing.
Time waits for no-one.
By the way if I didn't say so, I was sorry to hear about Dunc getting killed.
I'm gonna miss him.
He was a real hard worker.
Tons of kids.
Dante doesn't want to do this deal.
What's his problem? He just doesn't see how it can work.
You two not talking to each other.
- He doesn't see it.
- What does he want? That's why I'm here, I'm ready to talk.
What's it gonna take? I don't think it's the deal.
Or the money.
I think he just needs you to pay him some kind of respect.
You know what he's like.
It's important to him.
What kind of respect? What's he looking for? Let me ask him.
Do you remember Eddie Razzle? Whatever happened to him? Eddie Razzle was insane.
I don't know.
I lost track of him.
He was a great guy.
Hang on.
This is Jim.
Yeah.
I understand.
Phan doesn't want to make the deal.
He doesn't understand how it's gonna work if you guys aren't talking.
I'm here, aren't I? What's his problem? He wants you to pay him some sign of respect? Like what? I don't know.
Let me ask.
Give him whatever he wants.
I'm tired of this already.
I got no real choice.
Let's make the goddamn deal so I can go home.
There's someone in Julianna's apartment.
I want a street unit to 1941 Georgia.
- I want video surveillance.
- Confirming the request What's going on? There's two men in apartment 543.
I'll tell you when they're leaving.
Stay on the line.
Who's this? No idea.
Hang on This one here looks like the Blackmire security guy.
You're right.
He's checking out her story.
Shit! He's searching the bookcase.
He's going to find the wire.
No, he's not.
Hello.
I cannot answer the phone right now.
Please leave a message.
Anybody home? It's building maintenance.
I've got the plumber with me now.
It's the only time he's available.
So we're gonna come up and fix the sink tonight.
These two jokers are just leaving.
- Are you down in front yet? - 90 seconds off and closing.
Get a bloody move on! Scotch no ice, right? Yes, ma'am.
Thank you.
Drinks in my office in ten minutes, yeah? We go on up, we're not coming down till we got a deal, right? No guarantees.
If it works out, all right.
- I'm not gonna make any promises.
- You need a fucking deal.
You gotta show some respect up here, or it ain't gonna happen.
Any disagreements that can't be settled easily, we go to a third-party negotiator.
OK with me.
Yeah, sounds right.
What's on the table is the eastern business.
If you guys can say yes, Ronnie will fly up next week, introduce you to the other end.
- Then we get it started.
- Sounds good.
Yeah.
Give us a bit.
Maybe we're gonna pull our chestnuts out of the fire.
Yeah.
We're gonna work it out.
- Can I have a minute to talk to you? - Catch you later.
I heard Francine left you.
Is that a forever thing? Could be, yeah.
So where does that leave us? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Can I see you after work? Sounds good.
Yeah.
What's happening? I think they're working it out.
Our DEA guy met with this cat today.
- From Washington State.
- Who is he? The plates, it's a rental.
The problem is Reardon is both the strength and the weakness of this.
If he goes, so goes the entire thing.
At least at the start until we can get more of our own operators inside.
- That may not be possible.
- What about Julianna? I'm not sure we should keep her in it.
I'm not convinced she can play the long game.
If we do, it's doubling the risk.
If we pull her, we lose the advantage of having someone close to Browne.
We'll have to build her back story tighter if we do keep her in.
Speak of the devil.
Is there a problem? The more the merrier.
The heat turns on one you got the other.
He's suspicious.
What should I do? She's back.
Is he there with you now? George is on his way up.
He is very suspicious about my story about my mother.
He wants to come with me to the hospital to see her.
Stay calm.
When he comes in, I'll give you a call.
You're going to ask him to answer it.
Then you're going to ask him to ask who it is.
Have you got that? He is here.
Come in! It's open.
Give me two minutes.
Which hospital is she at? I forget.
I have the number somewhere.
What's the name of the doctor? I'm sorry.
I don't know where I wrote it down.
Darling, can you answer that for me? Ask for Miss Vejzna.
- Hello? - Miss Vejzna, please.
- Who's calling, please? - St Joseph's hospital.
This is St Joseph's Hospital.
It's the hospital.
You regret, her mother passed away.
This is St Joseph's.
I regret to tell you, your mother passed away earlier this evening.
Nicely done, Rose.
You're catching on.
I'll come and see you whenever you want me to.
But it's probably a good idea for you to settle in for a couple of weeks.
- You're not too anxious, are you? - A little bit.
Not in a bad way.
Kind of excited.
I like my new room-mates.
They seem really nice.
Are you and dad ever gonna try and work things out? I don't think so.
I'm sorry we've fought so much in front of you.
That's over now.
It's over.
You're not ever gonna get back together, I guess.
That's probably a good thing.
I think this is gonna be really good for me.
I think I'm gonna be really happy here.
I hope so.
I really hope you make a lot of good friends here.
This is the guy who's been following you? I'm not sure who the other guy is.
Maybe you can find out.
- I'll have somebody work on it.
- Did you talk to the CIA about me? I did.
They're very interested in cutting a deal.
I don't wanna meet anybody.
I told them, and they've agreed I'll continue to be your only contact.
So, what do they want? Regular reports on Blackmire.
As soon as I hear anything, I'll let you know.
And look into that other thing.
- Are we on Julianna? - No.
Julianna took them out.
What? When did this happen? Last night some time.
Browne stayed the night.
When he went to the bathroom, she ripped them both out.
Has anybody heard from her since she did this? I don't believe so.
Julianna took the wire down last night.
I'm going to see what happened.
Make sure it gets back up today.
Morning, Bob.
Jimmy inside? Yeah, go on in.
He's expecting you.
Just got off the phone with Dante.
He's gonna make the deal with Phan.
Good.
You're gonna have to fly back east, hook them up.
I'm trying to work out a date that works for both Dante and Phan.
Dante's a little nervous about leaving town with all the bullshit going on.
- We've gotta keep a fire under this.
- Morning, gents.
- How are we today? - Good.
- Things are moving along.
- Same my end.
I just got back from two days in Mexico City with Mr Browne, from the Blackmire Group.
Actually, we just flew back together.
Things are in excellent shape.
He's very eager to go forward with everything.
What kind of money are we looking at? Somewhere around 250 million in the first year.
If we can handle that sort of capacity.
- But that's a good start, I'd say.
- Can we handle that? We can, yes, if you can still handle the bulk cash transfers you said you could.
Is that cash he's talking about? He had some reserves in Panama, he's a little nervous about.
- You have shipping down there, right? - Where's it going? To the Bahamas, directly to our vaults.
- We got a ship down there.
- Then I'll give him the word.
He talked about moving corporate money.
Where did this cash come from? It didn't come up in conversation.
- When does this need to happen? - When you're ready.
- We're ready.
- Good.
- Where did this come from? - Reardon.
There's a plate number on the car.
- It's an American plate.
- Washington.
Anything new on the Disciples shooting? They got video from the apartment's lobby.
Apparently it's a pretty good look at the shooter.
They're sending it over.
A David Baker's on the line.
He says you've been waiting for him to call.
Hello, Mary.
How's it looking? All right.
Can't complain.
What can I do for you? I just got a call from the Blackmire security chief.
He's been told to find out a little more about the escort provided for Mr Browne, Julianna Vejzna.
That's not good.
When was this? Five minutes ago.
I'm not sure it's as bad as all that.
Apparently his boss, Mr George Browne, has fallen pretty good for her.
He wants to buy her contract from the escort agency.
Her contract from the escort agency? Your girl told Browne she owes the escort agency a debt of 200 grand for getting her into Canada, buying a passport, - setting her up in a condo.
- Really? Yeah, so the guy wants me to put him in touch with the agency so they can do the deal.
Good to know.
Any chance you're free for a drink sometime this year? Any time after eight.
Give me a shout.
After eight, OK.
Have a seat.
How did Browne take the story about your mother? He was very sad he never got the chance to meet her.
And how's the romance between the two of you proceeding? Good, I think.
What have you got here? Blackmire documents for a water deal with Mexico.
Where do you think the relationship with Mr Browne is heading? If all goes well, we will be married in the spring.
Why did you remove the wire from your apartment? I don't think you want it found by his security men.
What do you know about that? George told me that he is doing a background check on me, so I told him to go ahead.
I told him Katarina owns my contract and that he could buy me for 200,000.
George wants to talk to Katarina first and then, if he pays her the money I will be free.
Martin, could you contact Katarina for me, please? This is gonna be a lot harder than you may think.
Your story's gonna be very carefully scrutinised, not just by Blackmire, but by the press.
That is okay.
George says he knows how to give me a new background.
And he wants to give me the makeover before we get married.
We know who the guy is who killed Dante's guy.
- Who is he? - He's Clive Raymond from LA.
He's got a reputation as a mercenary.
- Any affiliations? - Just with the army.
I got a security-camera photo for you.
Catch you later.
It's the same guy who met with our DEA guy today.
Tell me it doesn't fit what I was saying.
I see the connections.
But I don't see you putting the puzzle together.
This is the guy who killed Duncan.
What do we know? Two weeks ago, the guy arrives in town asking about Jimmy, where he lives, et cetera.
They stake out the club here.
The word is he's looking to grab Jimmy, take him stateside.
This is the guy right here.
So we back him off a little.
Put a little extra security on, he fades away.
Then he meets that guy That guy kills Duncan.
What's going on? He's looking to take you guys out.
So somebody else can step in and run the trade in Vancouver.
- Whereabouts is this guy now? - Nobody knows.
So he could still be in town? Things are getting heavy.
- How long have you been living here? - A couple of years.
The kids moved out, the ex and I sold the house.
I got in just before the market freaked out.
- Good timing.
- Just lucky.
After you.
Sorry to scare you.
Jesus Christ.
What are you doing here? Stay away from my husband.
