Intelligence (2006) s02e12 Episode Script

We Were Here Now we Disappear

- What's going on? - Nothing.
Quiet so far.
- No trouble from the Americans? - No.
They've got no weed to sell so they're selling blow.
Otherwise everything's back to normal.
They're moving coke now? They're selling it cheap.
It's good powder.
- Where are they getting it? - I don't know but they've got plenty.
But everybody's holding steady? No-one's selling 'em any weed? Most everyone, yeah.
What's that mean? I think Nichols is trying to set up a deal on the side.
He says he's got a deal for 50lbs.
It's way out of his league so something's up.
You see him, tell him I wanna see him at the club.
Did you read this crap in the paper recommending we approved bulk water exports to the states of Mexico? I want everything you've got on the Blackmire group.
Any word from Julianna? She should be checking in this morning.
- I'd like to speak with her.
- I'll let her know.
Any word from the prime minister's office on the Blackmire situation? Nothing so far.
I imagine it's caused a bit of a panic.
I hope so.
- What's happening on the gang front? - Nobody got killed last night so no news is good news.
I'm just gonna check in with Reardon's mark.
Let me know.
How's the street? The boycott's back and the Americans are off our turf but they started selling coke instead of weed.
That's no good.
It's gonna cause some trouble for somebody.
The longer they're here, the more they settle in.
If we don't deal with it now we'll have to later.
Wait and see what they come back with.
Nichols is trying to put together a back-door deal.
I'm gonna have to deal with him.
Just send your car over.
Freddy met with Phan and Dante to work out some of the New York - transport details.
- How's that coming along? They're getting along pretty good as far as he can tell.
- Who knew? - Yeah.
- You hear from the Americans? - Not yet.
It's still early.
Give 'em a few hours.
- How are the boys holding up? - All right.
They're starting to put the coke out on the street.
How's it going? Putting money in their pockets will keep 'em happy for a while.
- You meet with Reardon? - On the way over there.
- How do you want me to play this? - Keep stalling him.
Tell him what he wants to hear, you're a reasonable guy trying to get along.
You said you'd bring more guys in to help us out.
I got a few dozen guys on the way.
Better hit Reardon soon, he's putting an alliance together.
You gonna eat? I better take this meeting.
There are over 20 articles or editorials in papers across the country advocating the sale of bulk water exports in the last two weeks alone.
The Blackmire publicity campaign has begun.
And yesterday the member of parliament for Calgary Central West went on record in favour of exploring bulk water sales to the U.
S.
and Mexico.
Is there a connection between him and Blackmire? Yes, he's on the list of those Blackmire's lobbying.
See if you can find connections from Blackmire to any of these tinpot editorialists.
I've got Julianna on the line.
She's off to Ottawa with Browne tomorrow.
Here she is.
Are you going to Ottawa on Blackmire business? George has meetings with the government people for two days.
- Is it about the water deals? - Yes.
After Ottawa, we are going to Washington for a week.
- And how are you holding up? - Yes, good.
Get us the names of everyone George meets with and give us a call.
Mr Cleary from Special Investigations requests a meeting.
- You've been talking to Reardon? - Not for a couple days.
You hear about his weed boycott? How's that working? Well, good for Reardon, not so good for the local coke dealers.
Now that the Americans can't get the weed, they're moving into coke.
They're dumping it dirt cheap so they're stealing somebody's customers.
It's gonna get nasty.
You think the Americans are gonna stay? Hello! Talk to Reardon.
Find out what he's planning.
Is he gonna make a deal? Are we gonna see a bloodbath? My money's on the bloodbath.
- Yeah, well, nobody wants a war.
- Yeah, no shit.
Your Blackmire brief caught the attention of the PM's office.
He's eager to pursue an investigation into your informant's allegations.
That was quick.
Apparently you know how to press the hot button.
- Where do we go from here? - Before anything else is triggered I need to speak with your informant to verify his credibility.
I'd like to protect his anonymity.
The sworn statements should be enough.
Under normal circumstances, but your informant alleges that the Blackmire Group is a CIA front that is trying to influence government policy.
That's no small matter.
I think those type of allegations warrant a credibility check on the source.
That may be a problem for the informant.
He hasn't agreed to testify.
I was under the impression that you had a deal in place.
To provide intel not to testify.
I'll need to speak to him in any case.
If I find him credible and the other sources or evidences are available for court, we can work something out.
I'll set something up.
You've been doing good work out here for us.
Keep it up and you'll find yourself in Ottawa.
When's this gonna happen? Yeah, I'm interested.
How much is it gonna cost? You wanna run a casino? - Which casino? - Waterfront.
Evans says we should do it.
We can get it cheap.
Yeah, maybe.
Nichols is here.
Want to talk to him? You sure you want this house? Make the call.
Tell the agent we'll make an offer today.
What's that? - It's just a twitch.
- You wanna see a doctor? I'm fine.
It's normal, really.
What's the story, Nichols? Heard you're putting a nice deal together.
I think that fell apart.
So I heard you were thinking about maybe selling to the Americans.
No, this is just some guy come down from the oil patch looking for his scores.
Don't make me cut you off.
I'm not doing anything, Jim, serious.
OK, I'll take your word for it.
I'd better go, there's some things I gotta do so - Thanks for coming by.
- Yeah, no problem.
That was Pete.
He's on his way over.
I just met with Mr Cleary.
He says he needs to meet with Julianna to verify her credibility.
Can we set up a meeting? Where would you like this to take place? Here.
You disagree.
Respectfully.
- Go ahead - Governments come and go.
A long-term informant like Julianna is a rare asset that could serve the country for a very long time.
You don't trust Mr Cleary will do the right thing.
I've been working for the government too long to trust them.
And this particular government has a lot to lose if it comes out that some of its members are being bribed by the CIA to advocate for the illegal sale of water resources.
I imagine Mr Cleary might be tempted to bury the whole thing.
He probably will be.
But the cat's out of the bag and I don't think I have any other choice.
I'll set up the meeting.
All right, so you've made your point.
I can't buy any weed off anybody.
We give up.
How do we break through this thing? I don't know.
What about export? Are we doing anything there? We're not looking for any new partners.
Me neither.
I'm just looking for a corner of the market.
I understand that.
Maybe you should drag yourself back across the line, find something down there.
Gotta be a citizen to deal weed up here? This is our territory.
We built up this business.
We like the way it is and we're gonna hang on to it.
You're telling me I can't deal blow either? I think somebody else is gonna tell you that.
I guess we're not gonna do any business.
No harm in trying, right? Take it easy.
Take it easy.
- This ain't over.
- No.
Christ.
Let's get everybody together.
Figure some things out.
I have to be back at the hotel in two hours exactly.
We are going to dinner.
I can't be late.
So I don't know exactly what questions Mr Cleary's going to ask.
But avoid telling him you have a relationship with George.
As far as he's concerned, you are a secretary in one of the Blackmire companies.
You came across the materials you gave us accidentally.
Tell the truth but avoid telling him you work for George.
And don't give any details.
If he asks if you're willing to testify in court, say no.
- Am I going to be asked to testify? - Probably, but it's a formality.
You have the right to say no.
Be firm.
Tell him you never agreed to testify and we don't have a formal deal.
You're gonna do fine.
What's up? We started hearing rumours that there's a gang war coming.
- Who's saying that? - It's off the street.
You backed the Americans up but they're pushing into the coke game.
It's not my problem.
I'm just protecting my own turf.
What other people do is up to them.
Maybe it'll be better to work things out, cut 'em a little peace.
Why fight it? - Thanks for the advice.
- They're not afraid to spill blood.
And the street's saying that I am? I've heard it said a couple times, yeah.
Get down to the Chick A Dee.
I wanna know who's coming and going.
You might wanna hear this.
It's not our investigation - but maybe related.
- Who's the target? The guy we're monitoring is a gun dealer.
We don't know the guy calling him.
A guy called Nick.
But he's asking for a couple dozen pieces.
It's Nick.
- I'm gonna need what we talked about.
- I got that for you.
- Two dozen pieces.
Is that right? - Yeah, they're coming in tonight.
Bring 'em by the hotel.
- That's it.
- You got numbers for this Nick guy? - We got a cell.
- Track it, monitor his traffic.
I'll get a warrant.
Everybody's starting to arrive.
Go on up.
We're upstairs.
Don't get mad.
I'm getting a little tired of sleeping with a baseball bat.
Stick around, I'll talk to you in a little bit.
Thanks for coming, man.
Go on up.
Thanks for coming.
Sit anywhere and grab a drink.
Dante and Red are running late.
- My cousin Freddy from Montreal.
- How's it going? There's some kind of major crime conference going on at the club.
Two big gangs here.
- Phan's crew and the Eis.
- Let me know if you see any new faces.
This guy Nick's calling again.
He's pissed.
The guy's coming from the island.
He's gonna be late.
I don't care.
I need this stuff.
I can't wait on this guy.
You gotta get this stuff to me, tonight.
If he comes in, I'll run him over to you at the hotel.
- Something's going down tonight.
- Any luck tracking the phone? - He's in the downtown quarter.
- Get a team to the other guy's place.
Put a watch on him.
If he's got a gun delivery coming, we wanna be on that.
- You got anything new for me? - Yeah, something's gonna go down.
I got an informant buying coke from the Americans.
They're feeling cocky, saying some shit is gonna go down.
- What's gonna happen? - Don't know.
All the guy said was there's gonna be some big changes.
That's all I got.
Get back out on the street, find out what you can.
The informant has asked not to be identified in the interview and that no recordings be made.
We'll be in here.
They'll be on the other side of the glass.
Can you hear us? Mr Cleary is gonna ask a few questions.
Thank you for coming.
We appreciate what you're doing for us.
Yes, thank you.
You work for the Blackmire Group in what capacity? I am secretary.
Can you tell me how these documents, these water deals, came into your possession? Yes.
I was asked by my boss to pick up his briefcase that he left in a taxi.
When I open it to check it was his, I saw the papers.
How long have you been working for the Blackmire Group? Two years.
When did you come across these documents? How long ago? Three weeks.
And do you know who these documents that talk about North American Union, who they were prepared for? For conference here in Vancouver.
And your boss was at that meeting here? And where was that held? At the Bancroft Hotel.
- And these other documents? - They were for a meeting in Mexico.
And you were at that meeting too? You knew what the documents are about.
You read them all.
I was instructed by my handler to read everything.
Do you know you know the Blackmire CEO, Mr George Browne? I met him.
I don't know him.
You heard from someone that Blackmire was a CIA front company? What was the source of that? I can't tell you that.
Are you willing to testify in court how you acquired these documents? - No.
- Why is that? Because I think my life would be threatened.
You like this informant? She's been honest with you? You think that she could lead us to other witnesses that would provide testimony or evidence? If she were given the time to develop the relationships, if she was allowed to stay at Blackmire long term I think she'd prove invaluable.
Let me take this back to the prime minister's office and justice and see if they think it's worth pursuing.
I find her credible so I'm gonna recommend that we continue along your present course.
Keep your informant in place and continue to gather relevant materials.
Again, just let me say that you're doing an excellent job.
So we're all here.
I'm gonna make a couple of introductions.
We got our friends from south Vancouver, Jay Dhillon.
- Thanks for coming, Jay.
- Yeah.
Good to see everybody.
From Souris, I think you all know Phan.
Yeah, we all go back.
Red from the Two Bit representing the Main Street crew.
Good to be here.
From the east side, we got Dante representing the Disciples.
And out from Montreal, Freddy D.
My pleasure.
You all know why we're here.
We got a problem with a new crew starting set up shop.
They're Americans.
We think they're responsible for two shootings, Dunc McNamara from the Disciples crew and Dan Lai from Phan's crew.
If they are, we know what we're facing now with the Americans - starting move in on the coke trade.
- How are you gonna deal with it? They got their own supply, it's good and it's cheap.
Dante, I don't know about you but I'm losing a lot of sales and it's only been a week since they started pushing the blow.
Yeah, but that's why we're here, to deal with this.
Coke's not our business.
It's not the Two Bit's business, it's not Phan's business.
But you all backed us on the weed thing so we're obviously gonna help you out, protecting that market.
I gotta ask you, and this is up to everybody here.
We cut the Americans in for a piece or not? Well, speaking for myself and my crew and our growers, no.
So now the question becomes, "what do we do?" Cut off the head.
And do we know who that is? It's that guy Pete.
He's the guy.
So who gets to take care of him and when? Tomorrow.
ASAP.
We should bring somebody in to do this.
That's my job.
We don't need to talk about that any more.
So that's it.
Anything else? OK, that's it.
Hang on.
Hold on.
Sit.
Sit down.
Everybody have a drink? Grab a drink.
Here we are, all getting along.
Today we got the Americans.
Tomorrow who knows.
The Russians, the Mexicans.
My point is Jim bringing us all together to deal with our mutual problem, the American problem, that's the way to go.
It's the way forward.
So, I'm gonna drink to this new thing, this new alliance.
Try to get the names of the government officials but don't push for it.
Just if it comes to you.
You're a sleeper now, just gathering intel.
Here we go.
If you've got any doubts if you wanna back out, now's the time to do it.
I can do it.
- Good night.
- Good night.
Call me any time if you need to talk.
- Thank you, Mary.
- Take care.
Take it easy, guys.
I gotta go.
I'll catch up with you tomorrow.
Good job, Jimbo.
I really feel good about this.
We should have done this a long time ago.
If you need help with that other thing, I'm here.
I'll take care of it.
You should let me do this.
You shouldn't be involved.
No, that's my job.
I can't ask anybody else to do it.
If I can't handle it, I shouldn't be running things.
Go and get settled in your rooms and then come on back down to the lounge.
Here, give you your key.
Got the top two floors.
Now, where do you want these guns then? Go round back.
Take 'em down to the parking garage.
I'll send somebody down.
Here you go.
Top two floors.
Dump your gear and come down to the lounge.
I'm outside.
We need to talk.
I'm not at the club, I'm at home.
What's going on? Stella told me that you were going up to visit this weekend and that I shouldn't come up.
Yeah, that's right.
I'm going up this weekend to visit.
So am I, so why don't we go up there together? I don't think that spending four hours in a car together - is such a great idea.
- Francine, how are you doing? I guess I'll see you up there and we can play tag team with Stella.
No, you're not cutting in to my time.
I've been planning this for a while.
We're taking her and her friends out for dinner.
- Are you taking Lorna with you? - I don't think he's here, hon.
Give me a break, would you? - I'm going to see Stella.
- Is that the plan? Is that why you don't want me? Are you taking Lorna with you? Call me back when you calm down.
Come on out of there you fucking coward.
He's not in there.
Something's wrong.
Julianna called.
She's gonna call again from her apartment when she can talk.
I'm in my apartment now.
Yes, we can see you.
Here's Mary.
- What's wrong? - I don't know.
I go back to George last night.
We go to dinner.
Everything is laugh, laugh, good mood.
And then we go to bed, everything is okay.
Then this morning he goes out to a meeting, he comes back and he is really mad and quiet and hating me with his eyes.
Something is wrong.
Where's George now? He is outside waiting.
He is waiting in the cab to take me to the airport but I don't think I should go because something is wrong.
You gonna need to make an excuse why you can't go on the trip.
No, I already make excuses and he is so angry.
Now he is coming up the stairs.
He is coming in the building.
- Lock the door.
- He has the keys.
Go down the back stairs.
- Go all the way down to the basement.
- Yes, I am going down.
Are you there? Browne is here.
She's not here.
Check the stairs.
Julianna, it's Martin.
Come.
Quickly.
OK, so the war is officially on.
We've got three dead in a park here.
Looks like another two on the North Shore.
Who are they? This one's Reardon's.
That's one of Dante's over there.
That's one of Dhillon's.
Get ahold of Reardon.
Tell him to get all his guys off the street.
What's up? A fucking war is happening.
We got five dead.
Call Reardon.
Get everybody off the street.
We need to find this gun dealer.
Pick him up.
Take him to the basement.
The basement.
- Get on the plane.
I'll call you.
- Let me know if you want me - to send some family.
- Just get on the plane.
- Where's Jim? - He's upstairs.
What do we know? Nothing.
Stay off the street.
Babe, I gotta get you outta here.
You gotta go home.
What is it? It's just another twitch.
All right, I'm taking you to the doctor, right now.
That's exactly what I said.
Go down to the cop shop.
Found out where they took the body.
- You got a number for his mother? - Who is it? I'll do something about it.
We know who it is.
You said you were gonna handle it.
Handle it.
Do something.
- Where the fuck did they come from? - Nobody knows.
A silver car.
I just talked to our cop.
He says there's five dead.
Three in the park.
Two more on the North Shore.
He says we should pull everybody off the street.
Justice won't play with this.
To proceed they need to have faith in the informant's ability to carry through and testify a trial.
I think you heard what she said last night.
I'm gonna want a second chance to persuade her.
We can offer her inducements and the witness protection programme.
I'll get in touch.
I'm prepared to meet her anywhere at any time.
I'll contact her handler.
Just knock that back.
I'm gonna need another meeting with the informant.
I wanna see her this time.
It's a face to face.
I understand.
Call me when you make contact.
Sometime today I hope.
- Hard to predict.
- I'll be close by.
Come.
We've got to change houses.
Let's go.
- How's she doing? - Pretty rattled.
What happened? I don't know.
Everything was fine.
Then George came back from the meeting and was very quiet and very angry and then he just said that we had to get to the airport.
Do you know who he met with? I asked, "What is wrong?" He wouldn't say anything.
I said I forgot my phone in the apartment and could we stop there.
We take the taxi and as I'm going to go up he takes my passport to keep.
And then I know it is really bad.
We saw him go into your apartment and find the cameras so we can pretty much say you've been exposed.
- Yes, he knows.
- So you need to make a decision.
We need to send you away.
Where do you want to go? - I don't want to go.
- It's not a choice.
Is there a city where you'd like to live for a while? - Anywhere? - Anywhere.
Paris.
Why did I know you'd say that? OK.
Let me get that started.
- You get some rest.
- Maybe I said something wrong to make him think I was spying on him.
I don't think it was anything you said or did.
Anyway, what's done is done.
Get some rest.
I'll try and get you on a plane tonight.
Thank you.
We made a mess of this whole thing.
Told the wrong people.
It's Cleary from Special Investigations.
Gonna have to have a good cover story or it's your head he'll be after.
I think that's pretty much a sure thing whatever happens.
Governments come and go, so will this.
- You think so? - All you need is a good story.
Right.
I'll start the arrangements for Julianna's travel.
Thank you.
- How's Sweet? - I don't know.
She's in the hospital getting some tests.
- What's going on? - Jim's gonna meet with Pete.
Hey, what's happening? - Waiting on a call.
- What are you going to say? Are you kidding? You're not going anywhere.
We're gonna try and settle things down.
What? That's the new plan? - Nobody wants to go to war.
- Nobody except the Americans.
They got no problem.
They'll keep right on rolling if we fold.
We'll try and settle things down.
Suddenly we're gonna start getting along? This is him now.
Hey, what's happening? - We need to get together.
- Why don't you come by here? Tell me where.
I'll be there.
St Tropez lounge.
Here I go.
It's just you going? - Have you spoken with her? - I contacted her right after I saw you.
I offered her your deal.
She refused.
- Where is she now? - I have no idea.
So we have a wild card running around out there.
Possibly.
- Bring her in.
- And if I can't find her? Somebody else will.
You've done a good job so far.
It'd be a shame if someone else got credit for your hard work.
OK, I'm being followed.
Get Julianna out of town.
Yes, ma'am.
Let's go.
I got a plate I want you to run for me.
I need a takedown team at the St Tropez Hotel.
We're looking for Nick Jordan and Pete James.
He's OK.
He's not here to cause trouble.
- What are you drinking? - Whatever you're having.
- OK, so what do you want? - Sell us weed.
Let us do our thing.
We usually try to avoid shooting people up here if it isn't necessary.
- I like that about this place.
- We want it to stay that way.
- I'm on the same programme.
- So we have a ceasefire? A ceasefire? Sure.
Then you got your weed.
OK, he just left.
The driver will take you to Seattle.
From there you take a plane to New York, from there to Paris.
- Bon voyage.
- Bon voyage.
Thank you.
Hurry.
Good job.
What did I do? Things are gonna be different around here? I'm gonna step back and concentrate on the bag for a while.
I want you to take over from me.
Are you ready for that? Yeah.
All right.
I'll give it a go.
I gotta get out of the game.
We just got a statement from an informant that puts Nick Jordan smack in the middle of this thing.
I don't think we'll see any more bloodshed for a while.
You might wanna tell Reardon.
All right.
Good to hear.
You can let everybody know we lifted the boycott.
- You did what you had to do.
- I hope so.
Guess we'll just wait and see how it all works out.
I'll go see the guys and talk 'em through it.
Hey, honey.
Why are you up so late? I wanted to know if you're still coming up this weekend to visit.
I can't hear you.
I'm gonna go outside.
Hang on.
Leave a message.
It's me.
Nothing urgent.
We've got this thing under control.
You can rest easy for a while.
