Episode 12 Shura
[door opens]
[door closes]
[footsteps approaching]
I've been to see your daughter, Taren.
Are you an assassin from Aureatia?
[Kuze grunts]
Is Curte all right?
[Kuze] I wanted to save her.
I was too late.
[Taren] I see.
[Kuze]
Let me ask you for your daughter's sake,
Taren the Guarded.
Why did you do it?
Why did you start a war?
To rule the world in place of Aureatia.
Does that satisfy you?
A country that relies on mercenaries
and wyverns for military strength
would never last long.
History provides
countless examples of rulers
who were driven mad by ambition.
That may be true, but…
Didn't you plan all this with the leaders
of Aureatia from the very start?
Wasn't this battle designed to gather
all the monsters
that became a threat to the world
after the True Demon King died,
and have them destroy each other?
[Taren scoffs]
[Taren] Suppose you were right,
I would never tell you.
Okay,
even I think
I'm being naive when I ask this…
This country allowed
wyverns and minian races to coexist.
Was that for your daughter's sake?
No.
It was all for the sake of military power.
To make the wyverns obey me,
I needed Curte.
That may have been the case at the start,
but doesn't Curte mean more to you now?
Your time is nearly up.
[Kuze] I am a holy knight.
This is your confession.
If you have any last words, I will listen.
[Taren] Last words…
[pensive music]
[inaudible]
I want a Hero.
[surprised grunt]
[Taren] Someone that shows there is indeed
a power stronger than fear in this world.
Someone who gives the people hope.
A True Hero.
[head scratching]
This is a surprise.
I never thought I'd hear
the self-proclaimed Demon King say that.
I've been living in fear
this whole time too,
holy knight.
I see.
Then I'm glad.
[Kuze]
I can grant your daughter her final wish.
[Curte] Mom…
My mom…
[breathes shakily]
"Please save my mom." That was her wish.
[scoffs]
[Lana breathing heavily]
[breathing heavily]
There's no way
this professor would do
anything to hurt you.
I'm sorry. It's because I hesitated.
That's why this happened to your city.
Next time, I promise I'll…
[Lana gasps]
S-Stay back!
[terrified gasping]
I…
I…
[terrified gasping]
- Lana!
- [Lana panting]
[breathing heavily]
[uneasy music]
Is this…
Is this the way things are
now the True Demon King is dead?
The True Demon King is dead.
And yet…
- those monsters are still here.
- [inaudible]
[tense music]
W-Who can defeat those things?
[Lana] There's nothing we can do…?
[Lana wheezing]
Now it's like…
the Demon King… is everywhere!
When will the fear end?
[gasps, chokes]
[somber music]
[coughs]
[gasps]
[tense dramatic music]
[gasps]
No…
[coughs]
[retches, coughing]
[breathes heavily]
[choking]
[retching, coughing]
[Lana coughs]
[Lana wheezing]
When? When did someone get me?
Life Arts… A slow-acting poison?
Elea…
[Lana breathing heavily]
- I'm scared. So scared.
- [somber music]
[in weak voice]
We're heading towards destruction.
What are we all
supposed to do?
[sobs, breathes shakily]
What are we supposed to do?
What are we supposed…
[music fades]
[soldier 1]
There are many casualties here.
[soldier 2] Checks are complete.
- [soldier 3] Roger that.
- [soldier 4] Over here!
Most of the citizens have been evacuated.
[soldier 5]
Watch out for leftover fighters.
Especially any surviving wyverns.
[footsteps approaching]
That's one grim expression, old man.
I thought we might be in trouble
when we got hit by the Cold Star,
but to think it all ended before dawn.
How many citizens were killed?
Excluding those caught up in the fires,
I'd say not many for a war.
[Hidow]
We'll portray the series of battles
as a rampage by Taren and the wyvern army,
and an overreaction to this
by some of the Mage City soldiers
who faced the assault.
Aureatia will intervene under the guise
of a post-war recovery effort,
promptly integrating Lithia
into Aureatia territory.
Any political issues
will eventually be resolved.
[Harghent]
The end of the New Principality.
Right.
Lithia will perish
now that it has lost Taren.
Still,
why did the fires suddenly go out?
[horses galloping]
[resident 1]
I never thought this would happen.
What will happen to Lithia?
[resident 2] What about Master Taren?
Professor?
[Elea] Yes, Kia?
What is it?
I was thinking…
When I finish my studies in Aureatia,
and return to Eta, then…
It doesn't matter actually.
[horses galloping]
[melancholy music]
[Kia] The truth is…
I could have helped a lot more.
I'm invincible, and I can do anything.
Even when facing such fires and battles…
And people getting hurt and dying…
No matter what terrible, sad thing I face,
I should be able to beat anything.
None of this is your fault, Kia.
[Kia] I know that.
[Elea] Even the World Word
is no match for some things.
She may be an almighty being
who can defeat enemies with a single word.
But Kia is still a young girl,
not merely a powerful weapon.
Before the competition starts,
I mustn't let anybody
find out the truth about Kia.
Someone must continue to protect her.
I know Kia and I can win.
No matter what trials we face.
No matter what sins I must commit,
I'll make sure
the World Word keeps winning.
Professor,
you're not mad at Lana, are you?
Of course not.
Why would I be?
In the end, she ran away like that.
So I thought
if you're mad at her for that,
then we could stop off at Lithia
on the way back
and you could make up with her.
Well…
[dramatic music]
Yes, I'd love to.
Do you promise?
Yes, it's a promise.
From now, I'll make sure I keep
the promise I made to you.
So teach me the right way to use my power.
Of course.
Let's stick together wherever we go, Kia.
The Day After the Unrest
[somber music]
[fire crackling]
[grave keeper grunting]
[grunting continues]
[Kuze] Hello there, grave keeper.
Need a helping hand?
Thanks, I'd appreciate that.
[grave keeper]
We've got yesterday's huge blaze
and the wyvern attack to blame for this.
A lot of soldiers died.
Poor things.
[somber music continues]
[Kuze]
Those bodies look like Mage City soldiers.
[grave keeper] Right.
Once you're dead, it doesn't matter
if you fought for Mage or Lithia.
The same goes for the wyverns
they're burning in the square.
Just until yesterday, they were soldiers
who protected this country.
[Kuze chuckles]
[Kuze] I agree.
Truth is, nobody ought to die.
[grave keeper] Amen to that.
[grunting]
The great Wordmaker doesn't lift a finger
to help at times like this.
[grave keeper grunts]
[Kuze] He's right.
That's why I have to
- try and save people myself.
- [pensive music]
As best I can.
[Nastique] Do you want to be saved?
- [Kuze] What would it take?
- Huh?
For everyone to be saved.
[grave keeper] After working
as a grave keeper for so long,
I often find myself wondering
the same thing as you, young man.
But in the end,
people can only save
what they're capable of saving.
[chuckles]
Right.
Absolutely.
You're absolutely right.
[pensive music continues]
I want a Hero.
[Kuze] Would the True Hero
have been able to save everything
without any bloodshed or tragedy?
[music fades]
I want to ask them myself.
Ishura Hero
[Soujirou]
Can't you fix this with your Word Arts?
[sighs, clicks tongue]
This is my best shirt.
[Yuno] It can probably be fixed
if we go to a big city.
Won't you ride the carriage?
[Soujirou] I told you,
I hate vehicles.
Soujirou, I know
it's a bit late to ask this,
but are you sure choosing me back then
was a good idea?
Aureatia's plan
seems to have been successful,
but Lord Hidow's orders
were to assassinate Taren.
[Yuno] So, there's a chance
that you won't be able to take part
in the Imperial Competition.
It really is too late to worry about that.
[Yuno] I know.
[soft chuckle]
It really is.
Well, who cares?
I had fun fighting Dakai.
[Soujirou] I only do what I choose to do,
and I never regret my choices.
I certainly don't need you butting in.
[Yuno] Dakai the Magpie
said something similar, didn't he?
That he didn't care about
what anybody else thought.
[Soujirou] Huh?
I can't forgive
that kind of thing after all.
- Oh, is that so?
- [pensive music]
[Yuno] I can't stand
that the people who change our world…
don't even care to look at us.
I can't stand that our existence,
and the lives we've lived
are treated like they don't matter,
treated like something worthless.
I can't stand it.
And you, Soujirou,
you only care about yourself
and the person you're fighting, right?
Is that bad?
It's not about being bad or wrong.
I can't forgive it,
because the world is not something
that doesn't matter.
You might be right.
But how would I know?
I was kicked out of my last world.
I only just got here
and I don't know about anything.
All I know
is how to swing this sword,
and how to kill.
[Yuno sighs]
[Yuno] I told you when we first met,
didn't I?
I said I'd guide you.
Around this world,
and to the Imperial Competition.
So you teach me too.
Teach you what exactly?
Well,
let's see…
You can teach me
about the Distant World you came from.
[footsteps thudding]
[soldiers murmuring]
[Hidow] So she's dead.
[footsteps thump]
Now you've gone and died,
even I can't grant your request.
Sorry about that, Nihilo.
If you win the war,
you'll grant my request, won't you?
Joining the minian races
one more time, huh?
The minian races… They aren't so great.
[slow footsteps thudding]
[distant whooshing]
I knew it. You're still around.
You're an Aureatian general, aren't you?
- [tense music]
- A big shot, just like Harghent.
I'm a civil official, not a general.
I suppose you've come for this,
Star Runner.
[Hidow]
Seeing as you survived the fighting,
I knew you'd come for this.
You could kill me and take it,
but why don't we make a deal?
[Alus] I don't need it.
The Cold Star isn't what I'm after.
[Hidow]
Then why have you followed me here?
If you planned to kill me from the start,
you could have just shot me in the head
from the sky, without coming down.
[Alus] I've heard about it.
Aureatia is planning
a big Imperial Competition, right?
A competition to decide a Hero,
the True Hero.
[Hidow] That's right.
I'll take part.
I'll fight Harghent.
[scoffs]
What a coincidence,
I was just about to suggest
the same thing.
[Hidow] You put on that huge display
because you knew
that nobody would recognize you
among the swarm of wyvern soldiers.
You calculated everything,
allowing the Twenty-Nine Officials
of Aureatia
to endorse you,
all while not revealing your trump card.
A wyvern with a sharp mind.
You're not called the strongest Rogue
for nothing.
[Alus] What's your answer?
[Hidow] I will endorse you.
The first candidate
is you.
[wind gusting]
One Year Earlier
Aureatia Central Assembly Hall
[tense music]
[investigator] That concludes the report.
There is nobody
who can confirm its validity.
Once again,
those who have come forward are probably
self-proclaimed heroes seeking fame.
[Jelki] I understand. You may go.
[investigator]
We shall continue investigations.
Minia
Third Minister: Jelki the Swift Ink
[door opens]
[Jelki] The era
of the self-proclaimed Demon King is over.
Does a self-proclaimed Hero come next?
[Jelki] Could it be that the Hero died
without anybody knowing?
Given the power of the True Demon King,
it's highly likely.
You look as angry as usual.
Are you okay?
Yuca.
It's nothing. Just this Hero matter.
My face is the same as always.
Then I take it
a Hero still hasn't been found, as always.
[clears throat]
Have you been instructed
to suppress the rebels again?
Is that why you're wearing armor?
Hmm…
Actually, that's right.
I had to kill two of them.
It's not a pleasant feeling.
The war with the Demon King Army is over,
but now I'm fighting my fellow minians.
It was minian races
that fought for the Demon King Army.
Well, that's true.
It was just a figure of speech.
[Yuca] You know what I mean.
- Yuca, about the Hero matter… Uh?
- [footsteps approaching]
Third Minister.
I see this Hero matter
is still troubling you.
[Jelki]
It is a matter that doesn't concern you,
Seventeenth Minister.
I heard a rumor that your troops
tortured a Lithia soldier recently.
Why has a woman like you
lured Her Majesty out here?
What are you trying to persuade her to do?
[Elea] How presumptuous of you.
Her Majesty herself requested
my company for a walk just now.
I see.
I take back what I said
about you luring Her Majesty out.
Come now.
We mustn't argue in a place like this.
Right, Your Majesty?
That's right.
Jelki.
The Hero is out there somewhere, right?
I pray that they are.
Then why haven't we found them?
There are still places
that haven't been searched.
It's possible
that the Hero might not even be a minia.
We will search the entire world.
What do you think, Elea?
Even if there is no Hero,
we have you, Queen Sephite.
Although you are not yet involved
in governmental affairs,
you will become capable
of governing the people in time.
I, Elea the Red Tag,
can assure you of that.
[Jelki] That time is yet to come.
Her Majesty is still too young now.
The country could end up divided
at this rate.
Yuca, I'd like to hear your opinion too.
Hmm…
If the Hero did appear,
it certainly wouldn't be a bad thing.
After all, they saved every one of us.
Then let's find them.
We just need to offer
honor and a reward, right?
We've offered plenty of that up to now.
Yet the True Hero still hasn't appeared.
Do we need the true one?
What do you mean?
Does it have to be the True Hero?
[grunts]
- [dramatic choral music]
- How about issuing a decree
to decide a Hero?
You mean to inform the nation
that we are searching for the Hero?
Yes.
If the Hero still doesn't come forward,
they probably won't
even after we decide on a new Hero.
[laughs]
In that case,
why not gather the self-proclaimed heroes
who have approached Jelki
and have them take part
in the Royal Games?
We can bill it like,
"The strongest is the True Hero."
Yuca.
Does that sound too barbaric?
Okay, scrap that.
[suspenseful music]
Jelki?
Excuse me,
I was just thinking about something.
Your Majesty, I shall take my leave.
[Sephite] Take care, Jelki.
[Jelki] Somebody…
Somebody has to make this happen.
[closing theme music]
We only need one Hero.
To begin a new era,
the monsters that could
potentially destroy the world
must be eradicated.
I'm the only one who can do it.
What's needed now, is a way to it.
[closing theme music continues]
[narrator] The enemy of the world
that filled the horizon with fear,
the True Demon King,
was defeated by somebody.
To this very day,
that lone Hero remains unknown,
both in name and existence.
Now the age of fear has come to an end,
that person has to be chosen.
The shura now have four names.
Alus the Star Runner.
Kia the World Word.
Nastique the Quiet Singer.
Soujirou the Willow-Sword.
