JAG s02e13 Episode Script

Code Blue

You're keeping up a pretty good pace for an old man.
The last couple of miles are a cool-down.
Oh, really? How far are you going today? The usual.
Ten miles.
You? The usual.
Fifteen.
Harm? Call 911.
Hang in there, Harm.
You're gonna be okay.
I win.
Following in his father's footsteps as a Naval aviator, Lieutenant Commander Harmon Rabb Jr.
Suffered a crash while landing his Tomcat on a storm-tossed carrier at sea.
Diagnosed with night blindness, Harm transferred to the Navy's Judge Advocate General Corps, which investigates, defends and prosecutes the law of the sea.
There, with fellow JAG lawyer Major Sarah MacKenzie, he now fights in and out of the courtroom with the same daring and tenacity that made him a top gun in the air.
The West Bank peace talks have been put on hold as the Israeli minister for West Bank Security and Defence, Semadar Barruch, is being rushed to Washington's Mercy Hospital.
Barruch has been on a waiting list for a heart transplant operation since a rare bacterial infection damaged his heart muscle several months ago.
We've learned a donor heart has been found and it's on its way to Washington.
As I speak, a crack heart-transplant team, headed up by cardiologist Gary Sugarman, is prepping Barruch for the complicated eight-hour transplant operation.
How are you feeling, Minister Barruch? - A little lightheaded.
- Well, that's the Meperidine.
It's just to help you relax a little bit.
We just received word that your new heart has arrived from Dulles Airport.
So we're gonna go ahead and get started.
Everything's gonna be fine, all right? Tomorrow you're gonna wake up with a new heart.
If you act now, we might even throw in a free oil change.
- Excuse me, please.
- Sorry, guys.
Club members only.
I'm Special Agent Alison Jacks, Secret Service.
- Agent Makaway, Israeli Mossad.
- Yeah, I know.
We are not to let the Minister Barruch out of our sight.
I know.
But trust me, he's not going anywhere.
- I'm sorry, but we have our orders.
- Look, guys.
Okay.
I'll allow one of you inside the OR, the other can wait out here.
All right? This is the only way in.
Fine.
I'll stay here.
- All right.
- Let's get you scrubbed up.
This is Jacks.
Tin Man is with the Wizard.
His name's Rabb.
Harmon Rabb.
I brought him in over an hour ago.
Spell it.
H-A-R-M-O-N R-A-B-B.
He was hit by a car.
- And you're sure they took him here? - I brought him in myself.
He's not in the computer.
Reception? Hi.
So, what does that mean? Either he hasn't been admitted or he was taken straight to the morgue.
Yeah.
- Would you like me to check? - Yes, please.
You know, it's really not that bad.
- What's that? - Antibiotics.
You gave yourself a pretty nasty gash, in addition to some ligament damage and a slight concussion.
I'll have our orthopaedic specialist have a look at your leg.
I'd like to keep you overnight for observation.
- In the hospital? - Well, I think it's a little early in our relationship for you to stay at my place.
You know, I'm used to being banged around.
I was a fighter pilot.
And I used to be a professional wrestler.
I'll send your girlfriend in to see you.
She's outside asking about you.
Oh, you mean my partner.
I'm between relationships.
Well, let's fix one thing at a time, shall we? That shot might make you sleep for a while.
I'll check up on you in a couple hours.
If you feel up to it, I'll buy you a coffee.
- Is that part of my treatment? - No.
Just curious to see you walk around in a hospital gown.
Nurse? Where's the head? The men's room? - How are you feeling, sailor? - Like I was hit by a car.
They want me to spend the night, so maybe you could get a 24-hour recess in the Meritt case.
- Bud's already working on it.
- Good.
You had me worried, Harm.
I mean, nobody was telling me anything.
Well, it looked a lot worse than it was.
I've had harder carrier landings.
Well, I want to I wanna thank you for pushing me out of the way.
Oh, hey, it was nothing you wouldn't have done, if you'd been a little faster.
Well, some of us are built for speed, others for comfort.
Nonetheless, I owe you one.
So if there's anything you need I'm a little hungry.
Can you get me something to eat from the hospital cafeteria? You're braver than I thought.
PH is 7.
35.
- Is the patient asleep? - Yes, doctor.
All right, ladies and gentlemen, we got four hours to get this heart out.
Let's say we get busy.
Well, Agent Makaway, I hope you can stand the sight of blood.
Scalpel? Excuse me, where's the cafeteria? Third floor off the elevator to your left.
Thanks.
I found your Commander Rabb.
Yeah, so did I.
He's in Emergency Room 4.
Not for long.
They're sending him to Room 307.
- 307, thanks.
- Should decrease from 70 percent.
About how Barruch's operation would affect the peace talks, but spokespersons from both sides say the talks will continue in his absence.
- lsraeli Intelligence Service, Mossad, before entering politics.
Many people, both in Israel and abroad - What are you in for? - Lost an argument with a car.
I'm in for some new parts myself.
Getting my hip replaced.
When you get to be my age, things start falling apart.
I'm just glad the plumbing still works, most of the time.
Are you Navy? Yeah, Lieutenant Commander Rabb, JAG Corps.
Chief Walter Hume, USS Gallant.
You know, we sank four U-boats during the Big One.
Now, that was before taking a depth charge off of Newfoundland.
Let's see.
That was in February the 22nd, 1942.
A German destroyer hunted us for six days.
And we were practically crippled.
We had, you know, no lights and sucking diesel fumes.
- They just kept pounding us.
- That they will engage The agent downstairs asked me to deliver this to you.
- Dixon? - He didn't tell me his name.
- Just to bring you coffee.
- Thank you.
I wonder what's made Nick so thoughtful.
Oh, maybe he likes you.
Get a gurney.
Seventy years old and never been in a damn hospital in my whole life.
Nope, not this sailor.
It makes one wonder if Minister Barruch' s condition is a direct result of being It's really nothing to be afraid of, chief.
Who says anything about being afraid? They do hip replacements every day.
It's a routine operation.
I ain't afraid of nothing.
Well, every ship needs a little retrofitting now and then, chief.
Yeah, that's true.
I guess it's better than being scrapped.
- call ICU 3231.
What are you doing? I'm talking to you.
Move away from the door! Four ninety-nine.
Get on the floor.
Now! Get down! - Seven litres.
- Clamp, doctor? - You got my heart? - Stop! Who are you? Security! Now! - Leave him! Continue the operation.
- He's dying! He's not the concern.
I am Mustapha Ben Kessar, and this hospital is now under the control of the Hamas.
Make your way, it's down this way.
Right.
What have we got? They've taken over two floors and locked off the elevators.
Red team, confirm on status transition.
Hi, I'm the adjacent This is Special Agent Lang.
I am Mustapha Ben Kessar.
The United States has illegally imprisoned an innocent political leader of the Islamic people.
Saw.
Unless the American authorities release Mousa Mohammed Abdul Marzook, the Hamas will terminate the operation on Minister Barruch and he will die.
That sounds fair enough, Mustapha.
So how about getting things rolling by releasing the patients up there so we can move them to another part of the hospital? No.
They will remain where they are.
Marzook will be taken to JFK Airport.
He will be flown to Damascus aboard the government jet.
When he has touched down safely, I will release Minister Barruch.
I will release the hostages and turn the hospital back over to you.
We have wired explosives on all the stairwell doors.
Do not attempt a rescue.
Pump ready? Okay, let's crack him.
Marzook.
He's in New York awaiting extradition - Get Justice on the line.
- They're never gonna let him leave.
See if they'll transport Marzook to the airport.
We need something to bargain with to get those hostages out before we get in there.
All clear.
Get somebody from the Bomb Squad over here.
Commander, did you hear that? Commander, did you hear that? I'm trying to talk to you.
If you'd get those things out of your ears so I could - Did you hear that? - What is it now, Walter? I heard gunshots.
It's a Western.
With automatic weapons? I'm telling you, it came from inside the hospital.
Something ain't going right.
I mean, they don't even answer my call bell.
Phone's dead.
How can they expect to fix a man's hip when they can't even keep the phones working? What? What are you doing? Well, what are you doing? I don't think you've got your sea legs, commander.
Look, whatever it is, I'll do it, but just tell me what you want.
Walter, wait here.
Aye, aye, sir.
- Scalpel.
- Scalpel.
Presses are on ten and ten right now.
Where the hell is everybody? - Are you in labour? - No.
I'm here to have my teeth cleaned.
What's it look like? - Let's get you back in your room.
- What's going on out there? I thought I heard gunshots.
I'm not sure.
- Why aren't you in a delivery room? - I just came in for some tests.
I'm not due for two weeks.
My husband is on some kind of a fishing trip.
Do you believe it? I asked him, "What happens if I go early?" And you know what he said? "You're late for everything.
Besides, trout season starts today.
" Oh, I hope he gets eaten by a bear.
Oh, if this is the first stage, I am not gonna make it.
My sister says natural childbirth is beautiful.
She says it's the only way babies were meant to be born.
God, I hate her! I feel like Sigourney Weaver in Alien.
Please give me an epidural.
I'm gonna get a doctor.
No! Wait, don't leave me.
Please.
I'm scared.
I'll be right back.
I promise.
You can't keep us in here.
I have patients out there.
People's lives are at stake.
I have to leave.
You are gonna have to shoot me to stop me.
- Mustapha.
- What's wrong? It's Temir.
I just saw a doctor.
He looked like he was trying to disarm one of the doors.
- Where is he now? - I don't know.
He disappeared.
But he has to be on this floor somewhere.
Call Zaki.
Find this man and kill him.
- It's all right.
- You'll be all right.
- Are you okay? - I think so.
- What language was that? - Farsi.
My grandmother is Persian.
- What did you say to them? - Not to shoot, - that you were just trying to help.
- Thanks.
Who are these guys? My guess is Jihad or Hamas terrorists.
They're here for Barruch? Oh, please, somebody help me.
She could be going into cardiac arrest.
Let me help It's okay.
You're gonna be okay.
You just take a couple deep breaths for me, all right? - That's two I owe you.
I'm Jenna.
- Mac.
You're with the good-looking sailor who doesn't look both ways before crossing.
His name's Harm.
I hope your friend Harm is staying out of trouble.
If I know Harm, he isn't.
- This is Lang.
- I want to speak to Marzook.
Okay.
We'll set up a phone line for you.
It may take a little time, but I want to speak to him now! I understand, but these things take time.
Time is something you do not have! If I do not speak to Marzook in 15 minutes, I will kill a hostage.
Temir, Zaki, where are you? We're in ICU looking for the man who tried to disable the bomb on the door.
I'm gonna go ahead and take Kill a patient.
It is done.
You heard him.
Kill one of them.
What's wrong, Zaki? Killing innocent people wasn't part of the plan.
If we must sacrifice one life to save a thousand, so be it.
Your brother Ra'fat knew this.
He gave his life for our cause.
Do you not wish to avenge your brother's death? - Yes, but - Then show us, Zaki.
Show us you're committed to freeing our people.
The whole world is waiting, Zaki.
Do it for your brother, for Allah, for Islam.
But do it.
Mustapha.
No, you listen to me.
I need Marzook on the phone in five minutes.
We've got gunfire upstairs and the elevator's coming down.
Five minutes! He's got it.
Come on.
Come on.
Damn.
They've got Marzook on a phone from the plane.
Mustapha.
Lang.
You killed a hostage after you said we had 15 minutes.
My watch must be fast.
If I do not speak to Marzook now, I will kill another patient.
Don't kill anyone.
I've got Marzook.
Hang on, I'll connect you.
- Hello? - Is Karen there? I'm sorry.
You'll have to call her back.
You're gonna love this.
We've got a Navy lieutenant commander upstairs on a cell phone.
What's your situation, commander? Right now, I'm in the ICU, but I have a couple of armed terrorists up here who are trying to put me in the morgue.
Just sit tight, commander.
Don't try anything heroic.
These guys just killed a hostage.
Was he an old man, full beard, long grey hair? You knew him? Not really.
When I found him, he was in full cardiac arrest.
I tried to save him, but he was gone.
They shot a dead man? Are you trying to tell me that these terrorists have a conscience? Just one of them.
His name's Zaki.
From what I could pick up, his brother Ra'fat was killed when one of their operations went sour.
Now, my guess is, he's here to avenge his brother's death.
But when push came to shove, he couldn't kill.
He could be their weak link.
How many are there? Two that I've seen.
Zaki and one named Temir.
He ordered Zaki to shoot a hostage.
- Which level are you on? - Three.
Their leader, Mustapha, is in OR on 4.
We estimate that there are at least five or six of them between the two floors.
We've got SWAT people on the roof and in the stairwells.
We're gonna set up a coordinated assault if we cannot negotiate them out.
They've booby-trapped the stairwell doors.
So they've told us.
Are you an explosives expert? Not really.
If I put our bomb expert on the phone with you, do you think you might be able to disarm one of the stairwell doors? I'm willing to give it a try.
Good man.
Call me back on 555-0100 when you're at the door.
- The heart's arriving.
- Let's go.
Suction.
Marzook is aboard the government jet at JFK.
The heart has arrived.
It is on the roof.
Thank God.
- Where is Temir? - I think he is still looking for that man.
They will have a SWAT team on the roof.
Send a hostage for the heart in case they try to trick us.
- I understand.
- Zaki.
Now that you have killed an infidel, you are truly one of us.
You, come with me.
- It's about time.
- No, no.
Not you.
You.
It's okay.
I'll be fine.
Hurry up! No tricks! Let's excise the heart.
Scissors.
Put it right there, please.
Open it.
Open it! Zaki, go help Temir find that man.
He worries me.
It makes one wonder if Minister Barruch's condition is a direct result of being caught in the middle of these warring factions in a land where death is a part of life.
I'll give you a solution.
Put them all in a damn boat.
- Where is Harmon Rabb? - Oh, he's probably looking for you.
And if you're smart enough, you'll hightail it out of here before he finds you.
But I fear no man.
Yeah, well, I guess that makes you stupid as well as annoying.
I sure as Sam Hill would hate to have a Navy SEAL hunting me down like a mad dog.
In a land where death is a part of life, peace is nothing more than an illusive concept.
- He is a Navy SEAL? - Oh, yeah.
A real killer.
He'll sneak up on you and snap your skinny chicken neck just like that.
I know.
I taught that boy everything.
And you are? Admiral Walter Hume, United States Navy, Covert Operations.
Minister Barruch and the thousands of people Where the hell's my doctor?! Don't yell.
Terrorists have taken over the hospital.
Do you understand? Terrorists Terrorists have taken over the hospital while I'm having a baby? Relax.
Relax.
Breathe through the pain.
I'll give you some pain to breathe through if you don't get me a doctor.
I will, I will, I will.
- Sorry.
- It's okay.
It's Rabb.
I have a pregnant woman.
I need to speak with a doctor.
Are you sure? Obstetrics is Level 2.
You wanna tell her she's not pregnant? Be my guest! Get me an obstetrician, fast.
I've got some intel on our terrorist, commander.
Your Temir has a rap sheet that reads like the Hamas Greatest Hits.
But even he's small potatoes compared to Mustapha.
- What about Zaki? - Nothing.
He's a photography student at N YU.
His only link to the group is his older brother Ra'fat, who blew himself up planting a bomb in a London subway.
Zaki doesn't even have a parking ticket.
Here's your ob-gyn.
This is Dr.
Agretto.
How far apart are her contractions? - Hi.
- Hi.
She's having contractions about every three minutes and lasting about 60 seconds.
- But who's counting? - Ask her if her water's broken.
- Did your water break? - Like Niagara Falls, two hours ago.
Do you know how to check for dilation? Well, you need to look and tell me how much she's dilated.
What is it? What's wrong? He wants to know how many centimetres you're dilated.
Oh, it feels as big as the Grand Canyon.
Oh, come on.
I've got nothing you haven't seen before.
Well? Well, I can honestly say I have never seen that before.
She's about 5 centimetres.
Five?! - Well, maybe 6.
- Well, look again, buster.
And don't you come back up until I'm hearing double digits.
Are you sure it's no more than 5 or 6 centimetres? Ask her if this is her first.
Is this your first? Do you think I'd go through this twice? - First.
- You've got an hour.
Maybe two.
Thanks, doc.
Okay, he said you safely have at least an hour.
An hour?! There's no way I'm doing this for an hour.
No way.
I'm gonna get you out of here real soon.
I don't want me out of here.
I want her out of here! - How do you know it's a girl? - Ultrasound.
I didn't see a weenie.
I'll be back soon.
I promise.
Oh, I hate men.
I hate men.
I hate men.
Agent Lang.
Okay.
I'm at the third level fire door, southwest corner.
Here's your expert, commander.
Third level fire door, southwest corner! Go! Go! Yeah.
Are we dealing with C3 explosives? Yeah.
Yeah.
Two bricks of C3 high explosives with a keypad on the detonator.
Yeah, red wire and a yellow one attached to what looks like a magnet switch.
No! You don't have to shoot people to kill them, Zaki.
You just leave them alone to die.
You've killed two people so far.
An old man and now a young woman.
Body count enough to avenge Ra'fat? I didn't kill them.
The old man was dead when I shot him, and I don't know what the girl died from.
She died because the doctors and nurses your friends are holding hostage weren't here to save her.
- I didn't think anyone would die.
- No excuse.
Under the law, you're still an accomplice to first-degree murder.
We're not murderers.
We're fighting for the freedom of our people.
By killing old men and young women? Do you know how many old men and young women and even babies we have lost? Too many.
Doesn't justify killing more.
You're not like the others, Zaki.
I saw what you did when Temir ordered you to shoot a hostage.
I'll testify to that.
And if you help me to end this now, I'll testify to that too.
This was not what I expected.
It never is.
Can you disarm the booby trap on the stairwell doors? Yes.
Let's do it, Zaki.
Let's put an end to this.
Where are you, doctor? Show yourself, doctor, or I will shoot every patient in the room.
I'll kill you.
Yeah.
In your dreams.
Got them both, did you? Don't sneak up on me like that, I could have killed you.
Any sailor worth his salt knows friend from foe.
I remember in '42, we were off of Guadalcanal on a pitch-black night - and we couldn't see anything - Not now, Walter.
- Help me get him into that bed.
- He's one of the bad guys.
Not really.
Now, come on, give me a hand.
Well, if you insist, but I've seen this before.
Yup, the old Helsinki Syndrome.
Pretty soon, you'll be wanting me to call you Tania.
Walter, snap to.
Aye, aye, sir.
Walter, what are you doing? Grab his feet.
That ain't gonna help him.
He's a goner with those wounds.
Chief Pelman was hit like that.
We were on a forward pom-pom during a kamikaze attack when this Zero came straight in at us and Tell it to him, Walter.
He's unconscious.
Well, like I said, we were on the forward pom-pom when this Zero comes straight at us, guns blazing.
Temir? Temir, where are you? This is Mustapha.
Zaki, where is Temir? Zaki? Let's have a look at that heart.
What are you doing? Without that heart, this man dies.
- Is there anything else we can do? - No.
We can keep him on life support for only so long.
I need that heart.
If this man dies, you will gain nothing.
He said he doesn't understand English.
- You speak his language? - Yes.
What would happen if your anaesthesiologist bled some of what she's giving the patient into this room? Well, we'd all get very sleepy and a little silly.
Couldn't we breathe oxygen or something to stay awake? Okay, people, let's try to make Minister Barruch as comfortable as possible.
Keep an eye on his vitals.
Dr.
Elzinger, move your backup cart over here closer to me so I can see it better, please.
Over here.
And bleed off some nitrous oxide.
It's getting a little stuffy in here.
We were on a life raft 33 days.
Damn near set a record.
Catching rain water with our shirts and fishing with our dog tags.
Do you know anything about delivering babies? Well, now, my wife Grace had seven kids.
And our second son, David, was the hardest.
He weighed 11 pounds, breech birth.
- Grace was in labour two days.
- Oh, I don't need to hear that.
Oh, I'm sorry.
My name's Walter, little lady.
What's yours? Not little lady anymore.
Let me help you.
I'll take you back to the room.
Check my upper suction.
Suction.
Can we get some oxygen over here? All right, give him a shot of Pentothal.
- Will you be all right? - Yes.
Go, go! Shut off that nitrous.
I'm at the southwest fire door, third level.
How's it going up there? Two terrorists down.
I don't know how many are left on this level, but it seems empty.
Listen, I tried to get the elevator going.
It's locked off on the fourth floor.
Yeah.
Go ahead.
Why don't I just cut one of the wires? Oh, no, I don't like those odds either.
The elevators are inoperative and the stairwell doors are wired with explosives.
- How long can you keep him alive? - A few hours.
What are you looking for? I don't know, a way to get that heart back.
Woman, you've got one hell of a scream.
- Scared ten years off of me.
- Oh, you ain't heard nothing yet.
Maybe I'd better boil some water.
I'm having a baby, not poaching eggs.
You know anything about delivering a baby? Okay.
The keypad has a dozen fine wires connected to a computer chip.
There's also a 12-volt alkaline battery.
No, I won't touch it.
Again.
I gotta put this on hold.
I got a woman screaming in labour.
I gotta go help her.
That woman's in pain.
You have to let me Well, let's see what we got here, missy.
- Looks like a big one.
- Oh, tell me about it.
Who are you? A doctor? Not a doctor.
Maybe a patient.
Possibly a visitor.
Putting in a new clip or checking maybe how many bullets you have? Police, yes? Military? Only a warrior could silence Temir.
Are you a warrior? Answer me! You know what is happening in the operating room? You do, or you would not be fighting us.
They have removed Minister Barruch's old heart.
They are waiting for this one.
Throw down your weapon, and you can take it to them.
Mustapha, this is Major MacKenzie.
We've captured your brother Abdul.
We will trade him for the heart.
This is Mustapha Ben Kessar, leader of the Hamas, defender of the faith.
You touch one hair on my brother's head and you will all die.
Well, you'd have to get by me first, hotshot.
We're offering you a trade.
Take it.
It's the best deal you're gonna get.
All right, Major MacKenzie, you have a deal.
But first, I have an infidel to kill.
You are out of bullets.
Before I kill you, I just want to know, who are you? Lieutenant Commander Harmon Rabb Jr.
But my call sign is Zapper.
No, I can't do it.
He's brain-dead, isn't he? Yes, but his heart may not match the tissue and blood type.
And just as important, we need the permission of his relatives.
It's being faxed over now.
The chief Palestinian negotiator at the peace talks secured permission from Zaki's mother.
He said he can't wait to negotiate with an Israeli who has a Palestinian heart.
All right.
Let's get this man up to the OR.
Let's go.
You should be in bed, commander.
So should you.
- What happened? - Oh, little language problem.
How do you say, "Stay where you are or I'll pistol-whip you" in Farsi? Sounded just like that.
It's a boy.
I told you, missy.
I may be old, but haven't forgot what the plumbing looks like.
But the ultrasound said it was a girl.
It's never a hundred percent certain.
Tell me about it.
Oh, we didn't even have a boy's name picked out.
What's your name? Harm.
It's short for Harmon.
- And your name again? - Walter.
Well, how does that sound, huh? Harmon Walter.
I don't think he likes it.
How about Mac?
