[THEME MUSIC]
[NARRATOR] Fear.
When you're young,
black and from the hood,
fear is just one of those things
you're taught never to show a man.
It makes you weak, we're
told, makes you a target.
So what else can you do?
You learn to hide it,
disguise it by wrapping it
up in a certain mannerism,
like anger or aggression.
That way no one could
tell it was ever there,
and that deep down inside
you're still that young,
scared little kid who was
forced to grow up so quickly.
Not because you wanted to,
but because you had to, to survive.
And you know what? Most outsiders
won't even get it, you know?
Like, like the way we are around here.
The way we look.
Our style, chains, iced out,
sometimes completely matching from head
to toe in designers,
even when we're broke
or, like, the rent is due.
It's like it's somewhat
strange to them, like,
our language, like, the way we
talk, communicate with each other,
loud, animated at
times, aggressive even.
But let me try and explain.
See most of us, like, we
haven't come from much.
We're the children of immigrants,
born into struggle in strange lands.
We grew up not quite fitting in,
confused, torn between cultures,
like, neither one really
accepting us, so
so we created our own.
We wear our hoodies up as a
like a fuck you to a
society that never really
accepted us in the first place.
It's kind of like our uniform, like,
it represents our mindset kinda.
Our words and dialect
reflect the environment
in which we've been raised,
like, harsh and unforgiving.
Like, we dress the way we do, in
designers, with gold in our mouths
and diamonds around our necks, wearing
expensive watches on our wrists,
like, just to feel important,
just to feel some sort
of worth in a society
that's forever telling
us that we're worthless.
There's no rocket science to it, man.
It's just simple cause
and effect, I guess.
So, like I said, like,
we didn't come from much.
So every time we step out,
it's like a celebration for us,
look how far we've come,
but yet a reminder of how
far we still have left to go.
