Previously on King.
Get me Jessica King.
Take me somewhere I can show off these shoes.
The bean.
Aww! Two peas in a pod.
You won't even acknowledge the fact that we slept together.
That you might be carrying our baby.
No more bets.
You and I, we're square.
Price of doing business, mate.
Jess! God.
- Do you, uh? - What? Do you have any, uh No.
Do you? - No.
- No? - No.
- Really? I don't, but it's OK.
We can just No, no It's it's OK.
I think I saw a place around the corner.
Do you want me to go back and get some? Yes.
Be right back? I'll be right back, yep.
Give me my goddamn car! Were you drinking when you made this? - Don't.
- You know, sometimes it's just better to outsource stress.
It looks bad, but it'll taste good.
Where's Danny? He's in the corner.
Life of the party.
- You guys having a good time? - I'm enjoying this martini very much.
Does Danny drink scotch? 'Cause we got him a single malt.
We drink everything.
Sixty-five an hour, construction site, five minutes Taylor.
Can you give us a minute? Sure.
I'll get out of your space.
- It's a great party, - You could've warned me, Jess.
Well, that's the thing about surprise parties, Danny.
It's not surprising if you Mmhmm.
Yeah.
Danny! Happy birthday, man! - What? - What? Nothing.
I planned this thing weeks ago, OK? I didn't know we were gonna have a Right.
- What? - What? Nothing.
I'm just surprised you're drinking so soon.
Time for cake.
OK.
First off, thank you for coming.
Welcome.
I'm so glad you're all here.
Second, happy birthday to Danny.
Yay! Third, not pregnant anymore, so need to worry about my drinking.
Also And while we're at it, there's no need to say sorry.
Thank you.
And, to tell us to try again.
I'd appreciate that.
And, uh, just to bring it up at all.
Really? OK.
- Thanks.
Great.
Cake.
- There it is.
Thank you.
Thanks a lot, everybody.
Thank you so much for coming.
Thanks.
Danny.
Chief.
Earlier tonight, an officer was carjacked outside of a convenience store.
So call in robbery.
He'll be fine.
What's going on? Worst party ever.
He's a lead investigator on one of the major projects.
Now, he left his laptop in the car with the files on the entire case, including the name of an undercover in deep with some dangerous Jess.
- Chief.
- King! I need you here.
Now.
So you think our guy was targeted? I think we need to get our hands on that laptop before anyone else does.
What's the focus of the project? - I'll let our guy tell you.
- What kind of dumb-ass takes high-risk intel out of the shop and let's himself get jacked? My ex-husband.
KING S02 Ep04 - Charlene Francis Jessica King.
Of all the gun-trafficking cases in the world, you walk into mine, Didn't walk in; got pulled out of a party and asked to save it.
You two were? I don't believe this.
How you been, Pete? - It's been - A while yeah.
You're looking - Tired, probably.
- Great.
I was gonna say great.
Can we save the reunion for later? - So, what happened? Came out of a store, I got suckered, the guy took my keys and gunned it.
What were you doing at the store? Well, does it matter? - Condoms.
I was buying condoms.
- Lord, love a duck.
I was with a woman I was seeing.
- I was going back to her house.
- And you weren't packing? Pete! King! Relevant details.
Listen, the laptop was encrypted.
Nobody's gonna find anything.
We've got enough money and man hours sunk into this project to kill us if it all goes south, and one of our best undercover agents on the line.
- Who was the target? - Marshal Gauge.
- Who's the UC? - Charlene Francis.
I need you to make contact.
- Chief, I can't - It's King's assignment.
You can assist or advise as needed.
And what am I gonna tell the rest of my team? - Nothing yet.
- Unless you want them to know you put an officer's life at risk so you could get laid.
King, if the UC's life is at risk, you kill the project.
OK, go.
Thanks.
Graci's blowing this out of proportion.
Why the hell break protocol and take that laptop out of the shop? You're talking to me about protocol and you're dressed like that? How long have you known this woman? Are you asking me as a detective sergeant, - or my ex-wife? - Both.
Tanya Pritchard.
I met her a couple weeks back.
And you were making out in the car.
What are you, 16? Yeah, like we never did that.
You and I will not be discussing what we did or didn't do.
Is that clear? So, just like our marriage, then? Martin, pull up Marshal Gauge, please.
This is Detective Sergeant Pete Rivers.
Special Projects.
Good cop, lousy husband.
You're only as good as your partner.
- You two were married? - He was number two.
- Yeah, otherwise known as the mistake.
- Here we go.
Marshal Gauge.
OK, the laptop contains project files on this guy Gauge.
He's a high-level ecstasy producer looking to sell drugs for guns.
Gauge likes dropping bodies, and he's gonna gather enough firepower to drop some more.
If we don't stop this, we're gonna have a hell of a lot of illegal guns on the street.
Yeah, and a gang war.
Martin, Detective Charlene Francis, please.
So, she's our undercover.
If Gauge makes her, we'll be finding pieces of her all over the city.
- Security on the laptop? - Transmits a video when it's turned on, so if the thief opens up the laptop, we'll get a picture of his face and land a lead.
And, Ingrid, check the car records.
See if we can find any thieves with a similar assault M.
O.
Danny, hold on.
I want you guys to find Pete's SUV.
It could be on some boat to the Middle East by now.
And the laptop is long gone.
Get a couple of unis to check the pawn shops first thing in the morning.
Danny.
Hi.
Nope, it's not Danny.
It's Lis.
He never came back.
Is what I said really that bad? I'm guessing you two really haven't talked about it yet.
What's there to talk about? I was pregnant; now I'm not.
- Then, yeah, that's pretty bad.
- He knows me.
Sometimes the filter thing doesn't work.
- Have you tried calling? - No, I'm giving him a little bit of time.
Aren't you worried? I mean, about where he went.
I mean, he could be gambling.
Look, I gotta get back.
I'm sorry to stick you with all the mess.
That's OK.
- I am not cleaning up.
- Night.
Good night.
So, how do you make contact with Charlene? Coded text.
"Call Uncle Frank.
" Your Uncle Frank died on a barstool.
He's also the reason I became a police officer.
And the reason you became a drunk.
Still on the wagon? Yeah.
Turned my life around since we divorced.
I'm working the steps.
- So you weren't drinking tonight? - No, Jess, I wasn't.
How was your party? It was bad, then I made it worse.
Husband number three is not talking to me.
There's always number four.
I will not have more divorces than my mother.
No way.
OK, get Charlene to contact Uncle Frank.
Auntie Jess needs to talk to her.
So, the assailant came at him from over there.
The store camera should have that.
Why didn't you show up to Jess's party? Danny and I don't see eye to eye.
How was it? - It was interesting.
- Yeah.
And Boss announced she had a miscarriage.
- A miscarriage? - Yeah.
Then Danny walked out, and then we get pulled in.
Crime scene's over here, big guy.
According to some piece of tape, yeah, but who knows who even put it there? You've reached the voicemail of Danny Sless.
Yeah.
What's the news on Pete's girlfriend? Tanya Pritchard.
No priors.
Works as a waitress.
Credit card debt, but no worse than mine.
Bring her in.
- OK.
- Tonight the party.
I guess my speech was a little Too much.
You're like Forest Gump's chocolates.
OK, what's the story with you and Pete? Why'd you two split up? I threw him a surprise party.
I need a minute.
Charlene's stuck in cover.
She can't risk coming out right now.
Well, I'm not leaving her hanging without knowing what's going on.
Did you build anything into her cover? - Outstanding assault warrant.
- We'll use that.
Where is she? She's in a booze can in Chinatown.
With Gauge.
We'll bust in and single out Charlene with the warrant.
You want to do that right now? Why not? I'm dressed for a party, aren't I? What's her story? Uniformed in Morality to Organized Crime.
She lost her husband in a car wreck, transferred to Narcotics.
She's been in undercover four straight years now.
Here she comes.
I dare you! Take these cuffs off and step out from behind the badge.
I dare you! I'll have you choking on your own candies! I like her.
How'd she get so close to Gauge? Well, she might have had to knock a few skulls to get his trust.
But only the kind of skulls that had it coming.
Pete, sit tight.
There.
And you are? Detective Sergeant Jessica King.
Well, congratulations, King.
You just got me killed.
I'd come in when I could.
We're just checking in here.
No, we're not just checking in.
You could be in serious danger.
Pete's laptop contains the details of the project, including your identity.
And Pete's my handler, so Pete should handle it.
You say the word, and you're out this ends here and now.
This deal goes down in the next 48 hours.
Once I have the time and location, we got him cold.
Put yourself in my shoes.
What would you do? You'll have constant surveillance.
He scans for bugs and GPS every day.
Can you leave us alone for a second? Keep it off unless you're in serious danger.
Turn it on, we'll rain down everything we got on these guys.
- She's my UC, Jess.
- Remember when I became your boss, like, a few hours ago? Anything about your boss I should know? Anything you want to tell me? - He's a good handler.
- Always? Are you here to help us get Marshal Gauge, or to crucify Pete Rivers? I'm here to watch your back.
- Gauge's lawyer's here.
- King.
I got this.
I can see that.
And, by the way, nice dress.
Time to change.
Party's over.
Danny? Alex Taylor.
Taylor.
It's King.
Have you seen Danny at all? Danny? No.
No, we were supposed to work out.
He never showed.
- You talked to him last night? - After he left? No.
You wouldn't tell me if you had.
Partner code.
Maybe Danny just needs to cool down.
Listen, you hear from him, just tell him to call me, OK? Sure.
Miss Pritchard.
Hi.
I'm Detective Sergeant Jessica King.
Why are there toys in here? Sometimes we use this room to interview children.
Brought you a coffee.
You can call me Jess.
OK if I call you Tanya? Mmhmm.
I'm glad Pete's all right.
It was a bit Well, I was worried.
- Tell me what you guys did last night.
- We went out for Chinese.
Then he drove me home.
I went into my apartment, and he went to the store.
- For condoms.
- Yep.
Had you two slept together before? This is, Are you the Jess he was married to? - That's not why I'm asking.
- I know.
But why are you? The more I know about Pete, who he sees, who his friends are, the better I can do my job.
OK.
But it's weird.
I like Pete.
Me too.
And he seems very happy.
Does Pete talk about his job much? He said something big was going on.
He said maybe soon we'd go out and celebrate.
What'd he mean by that? Like, when he was done, we'd go party at the Admiral - where we met.
- You guys drink together? A couple of times.
Is he around? Can I see him? Mmhmm.
Good.
The store cameras.
Maybe they saw something Pete didn't.
I'll take a look.
And check the serial number on this bike.
See if it was reported stolen.
Anything else, boys? Can I pack you a lunch? Picture of a bike.
I asked you for an SUV.
Nothing on the vehicle yet.
The bike may be how the assailant got to the convenience store.
Boss, you got a second? - Why didn't you tell me? - Tell you what? - You had a miscarriage.
- This is so not the right time.
I have a right to know, Jess.
You have the right to remain silent.
And so do I.
Which is why you announced it at a party, but don't bother telling me? Look, Jess, I'm I'm so sorry, but I'm I'm You know, I I'm here.
You know, if you need someone to talk to.
I don't.
- I want to help.
- Then find me that SUV.
Find me that laptop.
Anything that could help me make this all go away.
Yeah.
Martin.
Let's get after that SUV.
Call me when you get something?- What was that about? Awkward personal history day around here.
Wonder who will pop up next.
Got a history with this guy? It's a live feed from Pete's computer.
Getting a screen grab? Got it.
Keystroke monitoring too.
- He just typed "password".
- Clearly not a master hacker.
If we're lucky, he'll sign up to internet porn, give us his credit card.
Or not.
Damn it! Best case scenario, he gives up, computer surfaces in a pawn shop.
Worst case, he knows what's on it and he's looking for help to crack it.
Find Pete now and see if he recognizes this guy.
I'll get the screen grab up to photo identification.
- We don't have that kind of time.
- I've got a plan.
- Where are you going? - To a bar.
Rick.
Long time.
Jess? Is that you? You look, Easy.
I'm a remarried lady.
Damn.
Missed that window again.
So, what brings you down here? - You see much of Pete lately? - He comes in for a beer once in a while.
You know, chats people up like he does.
Same old Pete.
Does Pete ever have more than just one? Like I said, same old Pete.
Couple of times he went off the rails.
Yeah? He talk much on those nights? When does Pete Rivers not talk? Sure, he played the big cop, talked about some job he's working.
- What about the job? - To hear him tell it, he's up for Chief.
If he's had too much, he makes a call, and some blond dude picks him up.
Catch that guy's name? No.
And, as nice as it is to see you, gorgeous, I don't want to be in the middle of whatever's going on between you two.
- Been down that road before.
- Yeah.
Call me next time you're single? Stay by your phone.
This is the guy who has your computer.
I've never seen him before.
He doesn't look like anybody we have to be worried about, so that's good, right? I know that look.
Same old Pete.
Same old, - same old Pete.
- What? I spoke with Rick.
So I have one here and there.
I know my limits.
So were you drunk last night when your life-threatening case material got stolen? You know, the last time I checked, you were supposed to be managing this case.
Who's the guy who picks you up, Pete? Nels Berg.
He's my sponsor.
- What has you told him? - Nothing.
car theft, assault.
He didn't have anything to do with this.
Staff, I got something here.
Security cam from the store.
Nothing new on the attack, but two minutes before Pete got jacked, same parking lot, another SUV, easier target than Pete, nicer ride, but nothing happens.
Why? Because it wasn't random.
You were targeted.
Jess.
If you're interviewing Berg, I want to be there.
- No way.
You're too close to him.
- OK, hang on, Jess.
Calm down.
Berg was in the pen with Gauge.
Didn't know that, did you? I bet you also didn't know what you said to him when he pulled you out of the bar.
So I'm gonna go and do my job to keep your UC from getting killed.
If that doesn't hurt your feelings.
Mr.
Berg.
Detective Sergeant King.
Do you know why you're here? I know something happened to Pete.
He all right? He's recovering.
Can you tell me how you two know each other? Meeting, couple years back.
Pete's fallen off the wagon a few times since then, hasn't he? I can't answer that.
I get it.
Anonymity.
You're in a position of trust with the guy that you sponsor.
But here's what happens in this room: I ask questions, and you answer them.
Where were you last night? - My machine shop.
- Anyone else there? What can you tell me about Pete's personal life? Nels.
Nels, you've been making a real good five years.
It'd be a shame if I had to bounce you back to jail for the two ounces of weed we found in your shop.
That weed's part of my alcohol treatment.
I got a medical licence in the wall that they took From where, a robot? Marshal Gauge.
You two were block mates back in the day.
Was that fun? - What is this about? - So what happened? You ran into Gauge, remembered the good old days, thought you'd do him a solid, and, wait a minute, didn't Pete say something about some big, fat case? Got a match on the screen grab from photo identification.
Fast.
Too fast.
What, did you offer yourself up in marriage? Danny's single malt.
Darren Wheeler, low-level drug dealer, got busted using stolen debit cards.
Cross reference with Gauge.
And, while you're at it, see if he links up with Berg.
You boys have a lot to live up to.
- How's it going in there? - It isn't.
You want me to have a go? No, have a go at Darren Wheeler.
Pick him up.
The search warrant's coming.
Do you know this man, Mr.
Berg? No.
I think you set Pete up using his help, and right now I've got someone upstairs connecting the two of you.
- Well, he's gonna be up there a long time.
- If Pete told you something, he might have told someone else.
I'm in damage control here.
If we don't make this right, Pete loses his job.
How do you think he's gonna do with the drinking then? Better, or worse? What does Pete talk about when he's on a bender? He talks about you.
And he says you were the one, and he let you go.
Miss King, I haven't seen Marshal Gauge since I got out of prison.
I haven't broken any laws.
I'm simply trying to take it one day at a time.
Just like Pete.
Darren Wheeler.
Stop! Police! I'm good! I'm good! Go! Go! Berg had nothing to do with it.
- So what did he say? - He Not much.
He didn't say anything.
Check in with the surveillance team and see how Charlene's doing.
There he is.
Who said he died? And there she is with her ex-husband.
Graci asked me to help him out.
You've been gone over 12 hours.
I gotta get ready for my shift.
Could have called.
I was worried.
Really? Why, what'd you think I was doing? - Danny.
- No, seriously, what? I want to know.
I want to think you weren't gambling.
Sless.
Chief.
King, I need an update.
This Gauge project back on track? It's Not yet.
Any leads? We've identified the individual who's in possession of the laptop, we've got surveillance on Charlene Francis, we'll drop the hammer on Gauge when she gives us the green light.
I know Rivers has been in recovery.
Did drinking have anything to do with this? - There's n-nothing conclusive - Tell me you're not protecting him, because if you weigh Pete's career against these guns hitting the street I'm protecting Charlene, sir.
Right now it's better to keep Pete close than to throw him under the bus.
OK, then.
Get this done.
Martin, this better be good news.
Good and bad news.
Wheeler's definitely our guy.
And he was kind enough to leave his door open.
- we lost him.
- You lost him? How? We just we just did.
- And he's got the laptop.
- Hold on.
The bike from the convenience store was reported stolen.
The guy who reported it lives on the same block as Tanya Pritchard.
Show Wheeler's photograph to the bike owner, show it to Tanya.
Canvass.
Maybe Wheeler was working with someone in the neighbourhood.
Pete, not a good time.
They lost Charlene.
Surveillance lost her.
Charlene knows what she's doing.
We have to find her and get her out.
- Panic is not our friend.
- Surveillance lost her, Jess, which means that Gauge probab Maybe she lost them.
- Maybe she had to lose them.
- You're kidding, right? Charlene has the GPS, and if she's in serious trouble, - she'll use it.
- Unless she's already dead! - This is not your problem any - I know that three safe houses that Gauge has used.
We need to be going in there right now.
Pete! Go home.
You're always right, aren't you? Spears, what have you got? So, a few people have seen Wheeler hanging around.
Guess where he was waiting.
In front of Tanya's building.
No one's reported seeing them together, but, ehh, it's pretty hinky.
Pete shows up with Tanya last night, Wheeler's there, sees her get out.
He hops on the bike and follows him to the convenience store.
Who'd follow a car on a bike? Wheeler would have to know he wasn't going very far.
Maybe Tanya told him after she got out of the car.
Bring her back in.
Danny.
Pete.
- Long time no see.
How you doing? - I got an undercover out there, her life's on the line, and King's making it about me and her.
- There is no you and her, Pete.
- Tell her that.
She takes over your case, and you know you've screwed up, but at least you think maybe she's gonna help you fix things.
But all she ends up doing is making you feel like you're broken.
Seriously, Pete.
She'll ruin you, man, 'cause that's what she does.
She's my wife.
You're talking about my wife.
You realize that, right? If I were you, I'd get out.
This is Darren Wheeler.
He's a Virgo who enjoys selling drugs and stealing bank cards.
- Never heard of him.
- Take another look.
Why am I here again? Are you sizing up the new young thing? Honey, you're not that young.
Couple years back, you worked with Darren in a pub.
You sure you don't want to take another look? I worked with him? I don't remember.
Tanya, did Pete ever tell you about any of our interrogation techniques? - Nope.
- For example, sometimes we put a suspect in a swivel chair.
Thing is, the swivellers are usually lying.
I just don't like cops, OK? Is that why you're sleeping with one? Only one.
Pete says you get around the cop shop like a bad cold.
Well, Pete should know.
He's pretty contagious himself.
- Pete's not like that.
- Like what? Like you? A bit touchy about Pete 'cause you were already sleeping with Darren? I'm gonna give you a minute to think about what you're gonna say next.
So, they found Pete's SUV.
- That's good news.
- With Darren Wheeler in it.
Two in the chest, one in the head.
- The laptop? - Nope.
So he went to sell the intel on the computer to Gauge.
Gauge wanted the computer, but he didn't want a witness.
- Bye-bye, Darren Wheeler.
- Heard from Charlene? Not yet.
We're running out of time.
Yeah.
Let's see what we can get out of Tanya.
I'm relieved you don't know Darren.
We believe a man named Marshal Gauge killed him.
- Boss know you're here? - My guess is for Pete's laptop.
You're lying.
You wouldn't have said that if you didn't know him.
And whoever was working with him is next in line.
I can't help you if you don't tell me the truth, Tanya.
He was he was just gonna take the laptop out of Pete's car.
What was the plan? Darren was at the Admiral one night.
Pete was sitting next to him, drunk.
He started bragging about his job.
Then Darren heard him mention the name Gauge.
We thought Gauge would pay us for what the cops had on him.
So I flirted with Pete.
I asked him more about his job.
We went out on a couple of dates.
Then you slept with him.
Darren wasn't supposed to hurt Pete, OK? He was just gonna grab the computer from his car.
And he he he Once we had it Darren went to Gauge.
Gauge took the laptop and killed him.
- I just should have - OK, Tanya.
OK.
- No.
No.
- I want to talk to her.
- Let's go.
Spears, put Tanya in holding.
I just want a couple minutes.
That's all.
I just want to talk You just want to what? You want to hit her too? Is that it? Pete.
I told you to go home.
Surveillance had eyes on Gauge for months, and he just happens to lose them today? Ingrid, put out pictures of Charlene and Gauge.
Maybe we'll get a break and someone will see 'em.
We've got another live one.
- Speaking of Marshal Gauge.
- Well, he has Pete's computer.
Let's just hope he doesn't crack it in time.
Password hacker program booting up.
We got an hour, maybe two.
OK.
He's gonna trade ecstasy for guns.
Where is he going? Charlene's GPS just turned on.
- The signal's moving.
- Think she's in trouble? No.
I think she's leading us to the buy.
Ingrid's gonna monitor the GPS and tell us the coordinates.
- So, what do we know right now? - Nothing.
We're going in blind.
Jess.
what kind of backup did you have? Drew a a whole plan helicopters, snipers, emergency response team the whole nine yards.
Well, they can't help us until we can tell 'em where to go.
- You gotta let me ride along.
- Not gonna happen.
Where is she? Let's see what else you got.
OK, let's do this.
Where are we at with the response team? They're on their way.
We should wait.
Can't do it.
I'd tell you to count 'em, but we'd be here all night.
- Charlene's not been burned.
- What's the plan? We move.
Against five bad guys with a hundred guns.
How's it feel getting shot? Just try not to get it in the head.
Gauge.
You gotta see this, man.
Charlene's been made.
We gotta move.
- Tape her up and get her in the van.
Police! Put your weapons on the deck and your hands behind your head! Marshal Gauge, Detective Sergeant King.
So, how's your deal going down so far? You're gonna let us roll out of here, or we're gonna leave a pile of dead cops behind, starting with her.
Not a good idea.
Check the buildings at 11 and 5 o'clock.
We got two snipers on the top of each of 'em.
Helicopters coming.
Response team waiting downstairs, dogs, and a whole bunch of uniforms.
You really want to go and make yourself a cop killer, surrounded by guys who shoot people for a living? This is your last chance - Go, go, go! - Good? Good! Martin! Officer.
Don't move! I got him, Martin.
Go find Jess.
Get down now! Don't move! You were bluffing.
I don't bluff.
You're under arrest for murder, narcotics production, and for making me leave my husband's birthday party.
Our biggest seizure of illegal weapons and ecstasy.
The police service owes a debt of gratitude to Detective Sergeant Peter Rivers and his team for their inspiring dedication to seeing this project through to a major victory against violent crime.
This project is one of many still ongoing I'm struggling to understand how I should feel inspired right now.
Well, no mention of us saving his ass.
Or you saving mine.
Just happened to be in the right place.
I'm out of here.
I can watch bad TV at home.
What's next for you? Some time off, be myself for a while.
Come and play with us again sometime.
I'd love to, Staff.
And thanks.
- Oooh.
- She's not talking to me.
- Neither am I.
- I guess you just relived five years of bad marriage in 24 hours.
Three years.
The first two were kinda fun.
I won't be seeing you for a while.
Graci, I think he's gonna bury me somewhere.
I'm sorry, Jess.
I hope you and Danny have better luck.
I really do.
Thanks.
We're gonna need it.
So.
Pete.
Same old Pete.
- I talked to him.
- He tell you to get out? - Yeah.
- But here you are.
I'm not Pete.
I never said you were.
Yeah, after the party, I, uh I went to a card game.
You can say something.
I can talk all day.
I like to talk.
