La Brea (2021) s01e02 Episode Script

Day Two

1
Oh, my God.
Come on. Go, go, go, go.
Where's Josh?
No!
Run!
- Mom!
- Mom!
- Josh!
- Where the hell are we?
Dad, what is it?
I think I saw your drone down there.
Is the tail number 9300NN?
How the hell could he have known that?
I don't know. But we
need to look into him.
My wedding ring, it's gone.
Must have fallen off in the woods.
This morning, was your mom
wearing her ring around her neck?
Yes, she was. Why? How is that possible?
[wolf growls]
- [groans]
- Dad!
No!
Ahh! Ugh!
Help!
It's got the antibiotics for your son.
What's going on?
Those are the Hollywood Hills.
It's over those. I think
we're still in Los Angeles.
[dramatic music]

[saber-toothed tiger growling]
[leaves rustling]
[saber-toothed tiger growling]
Run!
Keep moving.
[gunshots]
[saber-toothed tiger groans]
- Is it dead?
- I think so.
Oh, God, there's another one.
Go. Come on.
Come on! This way. With me.

[wheezing and panting]
Shh, shh-shh-shh.
I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I can't.
[saber-toothed tiger growls]
Shh, shh.
[saber-toothed tiger roars]
[Josh groans]
[snoring]
Hey. Hey, Scott. Hey, Scott. Scott.
- What's up?
- Can you not?
- What?
- You're snoring
like an animal. And
I can't deal with that
on top of every other horrible thing.
So if you don't mind, just don't.
[groans]
Oh, no, no, no.
Uh, Riley, it looks really, really bad.
It is bad. It means
the wound's infected.
Well, why are you drawing on him?
If the redness grows beyond this circle,
the infection is spreading.
The bigger the infection,
the less time he has.
- I don't hear it anymore.
- It could be lying in wait.
First combat lesson I ever
learned, you assume nothing.
- Let's give it a minute.
- Okay, I'm just gonna say it.
That was a saber-toothed tiger, right?
Those things are extinct.
You still think we're
in Los Angeles, Eve?
I want to keep moving.
Eve, we all want to save your boy.
- But we need to be smart.
- I don't have time, Sam.
You guys can stay here
and you should stay here,
but my son is dying.
So I'm gonna take the medical supplies.
- And I'm gonna go.
- Okay, okay. Wait.
I don't want to put
you in any more danger.
Which I appreciate.
But I'm the only doctor out here.
So I'm going with you.
Thank you.
Let's go.
Come on, Ty.
It's not like I've got
anywhere else to be.
I think we're all right.
Looks like the tiger's gone.
Once we get past this ridge,
it's only a few miles to the clearing.
[leaves rustling]
[saber-toothed tiger roars]
Ugh! Ahh!
No!
Come on. Go. Keep moving.
[saber-toothed tiger growling]
Go! Move!
Get going!
[saber-toothed tiger growling]
[gasping]
[saber-toothed tiger roars]
[gasps]
[both panting]
Oh, my God.
That's a hunting trap.
Somebody made that.
Someone's out here.
We got to look for Sam. Come on.
Dad.
Dad, Dad.
- You okay?
- Oof, I was until now.
- Dad, don't make jokes.
- What happened up there?
They said your plane crashed.
Yeah, yeah. Well, I'm good.
Plane not so much.
Hey, why don't you guys go
get some lunch for your dad?
He looks like he could
use some food. Yeah?
Yeah, yeah.
I'm glad you're okay.
- I love you guys.
- Love you, Dad.
Yeah.
[sighs]
Hey.
You scared the hell out of me.
Yeah.
Hey. What's going on?
I don't know. I Eve, I saw something.
I was up there; everything was fine.
And I I I and
it was just flashes,
like someone was hitting
my head with a hammer.
I couldn't focus. I
lost control of the jet.
- What kind of flashes?
- I don't know.
It was a place, I
think, in the wilderness.
Like, it was, like, trees and fields.
But I could smell the grass.
I could feel the air on my skin.
- Did you tell the doctor?
- Yeah.
They said it could be
from the concussion, but
[sighs]
I swear I saw the
flashes before the crash.
Hey, look at me. I'm here now.
Okay? So whatever is going on
we'll figure it out.
Yeah.
You know I'd be lost without you.
I'm here with UCLA's
chair of paleontology
Dr. Peter Shen.
Dr. Shen, the entire
scientific community
is in an uproar today over birds
that emerged from the
sinkhole this morning.
Yes. The only thing we know about them
is that they're clearly
not from modern day.
But to me, the question
isn't what they are.
The question is, where
did they come from?
You know, sometimes here
at the La Brea Tar Pits
Hey, kiddo. You can't sleep?
Hey, hey. We're gonna get through this.
I still can't believe
you found her ring.
I know. Come on. Let's sit down.
- Dad, how did it get there?
- I'm not sure.
Somehow your mom and Josh
are alive in the same
place that I'm seeing.
We need to get Dr. Nathan
to send a rescue mission.
How are you gonna get her to do that?
You don't even know where they are.
That professor said those
birds came from the past.
So what if your mom and
Josh somehow ended up
in the same place that they came from?
- Dad.
- I know how it sounds, okay?
I'm I'm not even
sure I believe it myself.
But maybe we can prove it.
- How?
- I have an idea.
- Sam!
- Sam!
It all happened so fast.
I think this is where he went over.
We've got to get a look down there.
Give me a flashlight.
Oh, God.
- What? What's wrong?
- I took the wrong backpack.
Oh, God, the sutures, the antibiotics.
He's got everything. Sam has everything.
Look, we're gonna find Sam.
And we're gonna find
these meds for your boy.
We're not gonna let
either of them die, okay?
- Okay.
- Let's go.
[helicopter blades whirring]
We're on the brink of the
most important discovery
in human history. We
have a responsibility
to investigate what's beyond that light.
We're all on the same page, Dr. Nathan.
But we can't authorize
an exploratory mission,
not until we know for certain
where that light leads.
I understand. And I'm
working on that as we speak.
Well, when you have something concrete,
you let us know.
- I will.
- [screen beeps]
[church bell tolling]
[school bell rings]
There he is.
Dr. Shen, do you have a minute?
Sorry, who are you?
Someone you want to talk to.
About those birds that
flew out of the sinkhole.
This isn't a good time.
On the news, you asked
where those birds came from.
I think I may know.
So you think these
birds are from the past
and that your family is there too.
Look, we know how it sounds, okay,
but we could really use your help.
I'm sorry. I'm a man of
science, not science fiction.
What if we could prove it?
This is my wife's ring.
I dug it up last night.
All I'm asking you to
do is carbon date it.
I really do need to get going.
You have a family, Dr. Shen?
Two daughters.
Wouldn't you do anything to save them?
- Of course.
- That's all I'm trying to do.
- And if you're wrong
- You've wasted a couple hours.
But if I'm right, you'll have
made a hell of a discovery.
All right. Give me the afternoon.
[breathing heavily]
You, my friend, are in luck.
I snagged you a bottle of water.
[groaning]
Hey, hey. I'm sure they'll be back soon.
Maybe our parents are stuck in traffic.
Are you seriously making jokes?
You should check out my
TikTok when we get home.
I'm very funny. [groans]
Hey, hey. Hey, just stop talking, okay?
Save your energy.
- Sam!
- Sam!
We've been looking for
hours; where could he be?
Sam!
[coughs]
You're exhausted. Here,
come on. Take a minute.
- Yeah.
- Come on.
Thanks.
- No, I'm good. Thanks.
- You don't need any?
Mm-mm.
So what, you're Superwoman?
No, I wake up at 5:00 a.m.
every day and run 10 miles.
You build a stamina.
10 miles, wow. What
are you running from?
Didn't realize we were in session.
Come on. Let's keep looking.
- Yeah.
- Come on.
Hey, hey, excuse me. Do
you have any cell reception?
- Mm-mm. No.
- No?
Of course not. Why would you?
You fell in a massive
hole. That's just great.
No reason to have a panic attack at all.
- Hey, you all right?
- Not really.
I'm trying to answer the
million dollar question
of where we are.
I thought if maybe someone had a signal,
we could possibly call for help,
try to figure out a way home.
But obviously, that's hopeless.
I thought you said you
had theories on that.
I did.
I thought maybe that I ate
some really strong edibles
and I'm about to wake up in
bed like Neo in "The Matrix."
Oh, man. We're totally screwed
Hey, hey, hey. Calm down.
We're gonna be fine, buddy.
Thanks.
I just can't believe this is
all really happening, you know?
Neither can I. You from Australia?
Yeah. What gave that away?
Guess you picked a bad time to visit LA.
Oh, no. I'm not visiting. I live there.
I heard that you're a cop.
What, are you like LAPD or something?
No, I'm from Louisiana.
So what were you doing in LA.?
I had my reasons.
Feeling any better?
A bit.
Wait. Where are you going?
Well, to charge my phone
in one of these cars.
Like you said, it could
help us get out of here.
Good luck. I don't think
any of these cars even work.
Well, I'm gonna find the one that does.
[tense music]

[car clicking]
Damn it.

[engine grinding]

[engine grinding]
[ominous music]

No.

Excuse me. Hey.
Yes.
I'm really sorry about what
happened to your father.
I was wondering if
you can maybe help me.
I'm looking for the
owner of that Mustang.
Mid-20s, about 6 feet, brown hair,
wearing a green jacket, black hoodie.
Haven't seen him.
- How about you, little girl?
- Neither has she.
You sure about that, sweetheart?
My sister doesn't speak.
She hasn't for years.
Look, you see him, you come and find me.
Understand? And if, you know,
you all need anything, just
Actually, would you mind watching Lilly?
Like I said, I'm looking for someone.
Please, just for a little.
She won't be a bother.
Please. I have to bury our father.
Yeah, sure. Happy to help.
You hungry?
- Sam!
- Sam!
Sam!
- Hey, guys.
- Sam.
Over here.
- Oh, God. Sam.
- [groaning]
- Took your time.
- Can you move?
No, no, no, no. Don't. I
fell on my back. It's bad.
Well, we can't stay. We have to move.
- Eve.
- [distant roar]
You stay, you die.
We move, you at least
have a chance. Come on.
- Then we move.
- Okay.
[groaning]
Augh! Oh! Ohh!
No, this isn't gonna work. Come on.
You don't have time for this.
You need to get back to your son.
I'm not leaving you
here; it's too dangerous.
Eve, I'll be okay. You should go.
If I were you, I'd do the same thing.
[tense music]

Eve. Take the backpack.
Inject 50 milligrams twice a day.
You'll have to stitch him
up too. You know how to sew?
- No, not really.
- It's not as hard as it looks.
If you need help, Riley was pre-med.
Just let her know I love
her and that I'll be okay.
You should go.
Go. Now.
- No, I can't.
- Eve.
Sam, I'm gonna help you.
I don't care how slow we have to go.
Here, Ty, you take one
arm. I'll take the other.
- You got it.
- Okay. Come on.
- You don't have to do this.
- I know. But I am.
Come on.
Hey. This is gonna
sound a little awkward.
But I'm just gonna say it.
I need a bathroom buddy.
- Seriously?
- Doesn't have to be weird.
You don't have to watch me.
I just don't want to
go into the woods alone.
You have a shovel. You'll be fine.
Yeah, that's not for protection.
I just threw up in my mouth.
Okay, I could die out there.
Which sucks.
When those wolves attacked us, I froze.
I freaked out. But you
didn't. You saved yourself.
Look, I need you in case
something happens out there.
Dude, I can't. I
have to look after Josh.
Hello.
Sorry to interrupt, but
can I borrow your shovel?
- Uh
- My father.
I have to find him. He
needs a proper burial.
It's what God commands.
Uh, yeah. Here you go.
Oh, wait. So most wolves,
they don't take their prey
back to their den to eat.
They eat right away.
- Scott.
- What, that's actually true.
How do you know that?
I'm getting my master's in anthropology.
I do a lot of research
at the Tar Pits Museum.
Or at least I did before I
fell into a massive sinkhole.
Well, then you could help me look.
Oh, no, no, that's not what I meant.
My father did everything for
me. He died protecting me.
I can't just leave him
out there to rot, please.
Well, I guess maybe I
could probably help you.
Thank you. Um, just give me a minute.
Well, now you have your bathroom buddy.
Does this look like a wolf print?
Uh, could be.
But you're not certain.
Not entirely.
But if it is, it could mean
we're in the right area.
Or not at all.
Maybe we should just keep looking.
- That seems wise.
- Hey, listen,
I don't want to pretend to
know what you're going through.
But whenever I'm stressed,
which is, like, all the time,
this thing kind of helps me out.
- What is that?
- It's a vape.
You know, marijuana? It's medicinal.
- Drugs are a sin.
- Well, I don't believe in God.
So guess that works fine for me.
Sorry, it's just
I don't think I
function well without it.
It's doctor's orders, you know?
Wait, look.
[suspenseful music]

We must be close.

[panting]
Hey, hey. Why don't you take a break?
Just catch your breath.
We'll put him down.
Come on. Here you go.
[groans]
Your son needs you. You should go.
We can't be more than a
mile from the clearing.
- I can get him there.
- You can't do this alone, Ty.
You've been struggling the whole time.
Listen, by now the
infection's spreading,
and his fever is spiking.
He needs those meds.
I could do this, Eve.
I'll get him back
before dark, I promise.
Give her the backpack.
Take it.
Here, take this.
The rest of our water's in there.
Take care of him.
[dramatic music]

[tense music]

This is kind of random.
But normally, I need my
inhaler, like, once a day.
And pollution makes my asthma act up.
But here, not at all.
- Glad you're feeling healthy.
- I'm sorry.
That was insensitive, wasn't it?
- It's worse, isn't it?
- Mm-mm.
You got a bad poker face.
- [groans]
- You're gonna be okay.
[groans]
Ahh!
Josh.
Oh, God. Wake up. Wake up.
- Josh, honey.
- He just passed out.
The infection's gotten really bad.
- Do you have the antibiotics?
- Right here.
Josh, I got you. Okay?

You know what?
I think I might be
able to fix this thing.
We're trapped in some
kind of alternate reality.
I still haven't found my glasses,
and we're being hunted by wolves.
Is this the best time to play mechanic?
This isn't one of your
audition scenes, Billy.
I'm not playing a mechanic.
A, you're a lawyer. B,
I almost got that part.
And C, I know your dad
owned a repair shop.
He always told me you
refused to go in there.
We had our differences, sure,
but I was still paying attention.
Uh, hey. Marybeth.
I was wondering, can you
guys watch this little girl.
Her name is Lilly, and she doesn't talk.
An enviable quality.
Her sister asked me
to keep an eye on her
but said she'd be back by now.
And I'm looking for someone
and I need to get back to it.
- We're happy to help.
- Thanks.
And by the way, have
you seen a man, mid-20s,
6 foot, brown hair, green
jacket, black hoodie?
- I can't see anything.
- You're that cop, aren't you?
- Yeah.
- Is he dangerous?
Let's just say it's
important for me to find him.
You take good care of
this girl. You hear?
Hi. I'm Tony. This is Billy.
You know, I have a nephew
who's about your age
who's totally obsessed
with YouTube videos.
So I have a ton downloaded on my phone.
Want to take a look?
It's okay; you can watch it.
[helicopter blades whirring]
Heard we didn't get to go ahead.
They want proof, and we don't have it.
Where are you with Gavin Harris?
My people are looking into him.
But I don't think
you're gonna get the
answer you're looking for.
- Have you read his file?
- Of course.
So then you saw the
date of his accident.
That doesn't prove anything.
There's a connection
there. I can feel it.
He saw the drone, Adam.
He saw the tail numbers.
Whatever is beyond that
light, somehow he can see it.
Sophia, are you listening to yourself?
If he can help us
prove what's down there,
he could be the key to getting
this mission off the ground.
Listen, I know what's
at stake here for you,
what this mission means to you.
I just don't want you
getting your hopes up.
Agent Markman. You're
not gonna believe this.
It's about Gavin Harris.
Dad.
- Hey.
- What's going on?
I saw Mom running in the woods.
She's okay? She was safe?
I I think so. Yeah.
Is everything all right?
Yeah. Yeah.
When was the last time you two ate?
I'm not really hungry.
I miss them so much.
Oh, so do I.
Even Josh. Especially Josh.
Which is surprising,
because all he ever did
was get on my nerves.
But now I'd do anything just
to talk to him one more time.
I'd give it a day. Then
you'd be yelling at him
for hogging the bathroom before school.
[phone buzzing]
It's Dr. Shen. Hello.
I'll be right there.
What's wrong?
Someone stole your mom's ring.
[tense music]

[tires screeching]
Mr. Harris, we're
from Homeland Security.
You need to come with us.
- What? Why?
- Sir, get in the vehicle.
I'm not going anywhere with you.
Dad. What's going on?
Sir, get in the vehicle
or I'll put you in it.

Hey, it's okay; don't worry.
They're from DHS. I'll call you.

[tires squealing]
Okay. You're all stitched up.
Hey, sweetheart.
Sweetheart. Stay with me. Okay?
I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere.
There's nothing we can do now but wait.
Eve, where's my dad?
- Riley
- What is it? Just tell me.
He's injured. He fell down a hill.
And he can't walk.
- Oh, my God.
- He's still out there.
But he has help. He's with Ty.
- Why would you just leave him?
- I didn't have a choice.
- Of course you had a choice.
- It's gonna be okay.
They're not that far away,
and they're gonna be back
before it gets dark. Riley.
Don't touch me.
[sobbing]
[groaning]
No. I'm gonna have
to put you down, okay?
Okay, okay.
[groans]
[coughing]
What's the diagnosis?
You're sick. What is it?
I'm not sick.
If you haven't noticed, we're
on a pretty difficult journey.
I see the symptoms.
Nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath.
Doesn't take a genius.
Well, let's just say I've been better
and leave it at that.
Ty, whatever you're going through,
admit it or not, you're in
no condition to carry me back.
- Yes, I am. I have to.
- No, no, no, no.
You won't make it. You need help.
Go to the clearing.
Find someone, then come back for me.
No. Sam, I'm not gonna
just leave you here.
I've gone through worse.
Maybe not worse.
[branch cracking]
What the hell was that?
[tense music]

Who are you?
I think we lost the trail of blood.
I'm sorry, Veronica. I don't
know where else to look.
We can't give up.
God will show us the way.
Look, it is getting pretty late.
And this is the last place we
should be when it gets dark.
If you need to go back, I understand.
Well, I'd really prefer
if we went back together.
Okay, fine. I'll keep looking.
But we should split
up, cover more ground.
[dramatic music]

Oh, my.
Wow.
[camels grunting]
That's not good at all.
Hey. No, no. Hey, hey.
Definitely don't want to go in here.
No, no, no. Back the way you came.
That's it. That's the way to safety.
- Scott, what's going on?
- There you go. Excellent work.
Whoo!
- Those are camels.
- Yeah.
I just saved their lives.
Those camels were about to
walk into that pit of tar.
Would have been
impossible to get out of.
Used to happen all the time
at the La Brea Tar Pits.
Can't be.
No. Oh, no.
[tense music]
Dad.

- Who put him there?
- I have no idea.
But they could be close by.
Whoa, whoa, what are you doing?
- I have to bury him.
- No, you shouldn't do that.
We should leave.
Please just stand guard;
I'll do it as fast as I can.
This is so not a good idea.

You wanna tell me
where you're taking me?
No? Okay. Great.
Thank you for coming, Mr. Harris.
I didn't introduce myself yesterday.
I'm agent Adam Markman from DHS.
Let me guess. You stole my wife's ring.
Figured that's what this is about.
- We needed it for proof.
- Yeah? Proof of what?
Proof of where the sinkhole leads.
Your wife's ring carbon dates
to approximately 10,000 B.C.
I was right.
They're in the past.
How do you know that?
Because I can see that place.
I have for the last three years.
First I thought it was real.
But when no doctor could
explain why it was happening,
I stopped believing. But
now everything's changed.
I saw your drone there. I saw my family.
And that's how I found the ring.
You know, you're the first
person I've told that to
who hasn't looked to
me like I was crazy.
I don't think you're crazy.
In fact, I have a theory
that might explain why
this is happening to you.
What does the date October
26, 2018, mean to you?
That's the date of my plane crash.
The day the visions started.
20 miles from where you crashed,
another sinkhole opened
in the Mojave Desert.
We found something there,
something we've never seen before.
What the hell is that?
That light is at the bottom
of the La Brea sinkhole.
It's the same light we
discovered in the Mojave.
I believe there's a world beyond it.
And somehow you might be
the only one who can see it.
How is that possible?
It's a mystery to us, just like you are.
But for some reason,
the event in the Mojave
connected you to that world.
Gavin, there's something
else we need to show you.
You know, Billy, as
much as you hate looking
at the bright side of
things, it does exist.
No more internet. No more news.
Today's the first day in years
I didn't read an apocalyptic headline.
Except we're living the apocalypse.
Didn't we just talk
about staying optimistic?
Hello.
There you are, Lilly.
Hi, I'm I'm Tony.
This is Billy. You
must be Lilly's sister.
Marybeth asked us to watch
her. I hope that's okay.
That's very nice of you. Thank you.
It's okay, Lilly. I'm not upset.
We don't usually watch
videos in our house.
Come on, sweetie. Let's
leave these nice people alone.
Thanks again.
Lilly, did that man Tony
ask you any questions?
Did he ask questions about you, Lilly?
Look at me when I speak to you.
You know we can't trust these people.
We don't know them.
They won't understand us.
I know.
You're right. I didn't
tell them anything.
It's okay. Sweetie, I'm not mad.
We'll just forget this
ever happened, okay?
Dude, I've been looking
everywhere for you.
- We need to talk.
- What, Scott?
I think I know exactly where we are.
And how could you possibly know that?
Because of the camels.
- The camels?
- Yeah, like, eight of them.
They were about to
walk into a pit of tar
until I saved them.
Okay.
Those were the Tar Pits,
like the ones in LA.
Wait, you think we're in Los Angeles?
- Yes.
- Are you high?
Yeah, but that's not relevant.
Look, I remember those camels.
Their bones were excavated last year.
It was, like, a huge find.
And there were eight
of them. Just like now.
I thought you just said you saved them.
I did. I mean, I don't
know. Maybe I changed
the course of history.
Look, that's not the point.
Scientists from the Tar Pits
carbon-dated those bones.
They were from around
the year 10,000 B.C.
So if I'm right, that
would mean that we're in LA.
And it's sometime
during the last Ice Age.
Isn't that insane?
I can't deal with this
right now. I have to go.
Riley.
- I'm gonna go find them.
- Well, hold on.
- Let me go with you.
- You've done more than enough.
I'm not gonna let you do this alone.
Let me look for somebody to
- Riley!
- Dad.
Riley!
Dad.
Easy, easy, easy.
Hey, kiddo.
- How you doing, Sam?
- I'm fine.
Just a little banged
up. What about Josh?
I gave him the meds.
But Riley was with him the whole time.
- I'm just glad you're back.
- Lucas here was a godsend.
We ran into him in the woods.
Oh, right place, right time.
What were you doing out there?
I fell in that hole, ended
up about a mile from here.
- We have to lie you down.
- Yeah.
- Let's get him in the bus.
- I got this. Thank you.
Come on.
I've been looking for you.
What the hell are you doing here?
Fell through the sinkhole just like you.
No, you're supposed
to be in Baton Rouge.
I got a tip you were in
LA about to make a deal.
I came to stop you.
Oh, so you're following me?
I'm not gonna let you
throw your life away.
You're not a part of my life anymore.
You don't get a say in it.
Stay away from me.
Is that the guy you were trying to find?
Yep.
Who is he?
He's my son.
[groaning]
I'm gonna see if I can
find you some more water.
Hey. Thank you. Both of you.
What else can I do? What do you need?
I just need to relax. That's all.
Mom.
Josh.
Josh. Hey, sweetheart.
How you doing?
A little better.
You still have a temperature,
so you should rest, all right?
I'm gonna be fine, Mom.
I know.
I love you so much.
I love you too.
[dramatic music]
What do you think?
Looks like you've been busy.
It's a Striker prototype
designed specifically
to fly down into one of these sinkholes.
I've never seen anything like it.
We've been developing it for years.
We've been trying to get
the go ahead to launch
a rescue mission, but we couldn't.
Until now.
What changed?
You.
Now that we know where it leads,
now that we know people are
alive, everything's different.
We're going down there, and
you're gonna help us do it.
