Me and my kids were in the car worshiping.

and it's almost like
I saw a dark cloud. Whoosh.
And it told me to shut up,
told me and my kids to shut up.

I was about 12, 13?
The next year after I started hooping,
I was on the rankings, for sure.

about yourself?
Shit, they were saying a lot of stuff.
When I was in fifth grade,
they were saying I was the next LeBron.
I was to the league.
Just all the stuff you hear
when you nice and coming up, for real.
Like, I was dunking and everything,
like, I was just you feel me?
So they just thought I was, like
I don't even know the word.
Like, they was just excited
to see how much I had in store, for real.
Just to see
where the game took me, for real.
It definitely made me
think about the future a lot.
I for sure thought I was finna be
the number-one pick in the draft
by the time, like, 2021 came.
I was gonna do one year in college,
like, and I'm to the league.
I went to Team USA my freshman year.
You with all the other best players,
nigga, in the world, for real.
They had Trae Young, Kevin Knox,
Jalen Green.
All of them guys are in the NBA.
People knew me.
I was good at hoop, for real.
They just thought they was
gonna get something out of me, for real.
I was letting people in my circle
that didn't need to be in my circle.
I had a friend,
and, like that was my man, for real.
His dad actually adopted me.
My mama signed off the papers just because
she knew the situation I was in.
Like, I was in East Cleveland.
Like, it was niggas really outside dying.
She just wanted me out that environment,
so I ended up moving with them.
My first AAU team asked to move me
and they family to California
so I could go hoop.
I was staying with them in Sacramento.
And my mama was in Ohio, for real.
And then I just went.
I just went to this high school,
because that's what niggas told me to do.
Didn't really have no opinion.
I mean, I guess I did, but, like,
I ain't really had no opinion.
So they was just trying to force me
to go to these schools.
I just was on the move, for real.
I played at Shadow Mountain
for three years.
Won two state championships.
[interviewer] What happened
to your recruitment?
Honestly, bro, the grades. It was grades.
My grades just wasn't good.
I definitely had people just waiting
for me to get to the league, for real.
And then when they thought
it wasn't gonna happen,
they just really
didn't give a fuck about me.
Like, that shit really happened
to me a lot of times.
Like, niggas could kick you out
the next day, you feel me?
Like, anything can happen.
He's been at a different home
since, like, the sixth grade.
I mean, he's staying with a family
out in Orange County.
It's an hour-and-a-half train ride.
He squats on different couches,
and some guys that are local
when we got a game or something.
And so there's so much instability, man,
it's hard to even get to basketball.
I can't even get to coaching him.
It's very hard to separate life
and a basketball player.
[cracks knuckle]
And Shemar did incredibly well
at the beginning of our season,
because there was no structure.

The moment there was structure,
Shemar fell apart.

And that's in his life as well.
Everybody who's told him
to do something basketball-wise
were telling him to do something
for that moment in basketball.
It was never to prepare Shemar
for college or beyond.
If he can go house-to-house,
couch-to-couch, city-to-city,
play, he's fine.
Structure? It's not gonna work for him.
But structure's the only thing
that's gonna help this fool
for the next 60 years of his life.
That's been his life.
It's just been in a constant pattern
of trying to survive and eat.
[John] So he's losing
his basketball identity.
His identity is, like, homelessness.
He's not a basketball player.
He's [chuckles] he's homeless.
We can't even focus on basketball.

I was scared for him

I'm a coward, like how my dad left me."

It didn't hit me until he called me "Dad."
When he called me "Dad,"
I was like, "Shit." Like, "This is real."
I'm thinking,
"I messed up my basketball. I gotta quit."
That's when I was talking
to Coach Mosley about going there.
And then I stayed out here.
I have to put him first before everything.
I have to.
But I'm six days a week
at practice all the time.
I'm so tired.
It's not even funny.
[Jocelyn] I could say he tries his best.
You know, It's not as much as we'd expect,
but I always try to tell people, like,
he didn't really have
the proper parenting.
And his dad wasn't in his life either, so

So I'm still learning, but it's hard

nobody kind of show me what a father is.

This is preparation for his manhood.

to handle all those responsibilities

about basketball with Dez.
He gotta be a leader for his family.
It's time to get it together,
because you have responsibilities.
