Legacies (2018) s03e05 Episode Script

This is What It Takes

1 Previously on Legacies ALARIC: This is the therapy box.
All your psychological concerns are transferred inside to help you.
We got a struggle ahead of us.
But hear this, brother I'm your family now.
I've always seen you, Milton.
I've set every monster within Malivore loose.
ALARIC: The monsters got sent to a prison world.
HOPE: Malivore's dimension can't contain me.
He should spit us right back out.
HOPE: So then we made it, this is our world? LANDON: Something's changed.
Landon! (CROWD CLAMORING, CHEERING) Yo, it's been a hell of a year Lot of crazy, lot of fun, lot of shedding of tears We met Sebastian, Vardemus, Chad, Jade and Kym We had to beat The Necromancer all over again But it's good, Super Squad stayed packed with the pack Big Ric gettin' his mack on with Sheriff Mac Alyssa Chang was a pain till we met Dark Jo But thank Lord Salvatore that we didn't lose hope, uh Didn't lose hope You already know that we didn't lose hope Real monsters killed all them (MUSIC FADES) (INDISTINCT CHATTER) (BOTH GASP) What the hell do you think you're doing?! (RECORD SCRATCHES, MUSIC STOPS) (CROWD CLAMORING) Better question.
Who are you? It's a long story.
ALARIC: This is all very confusing.
HOPE: Because you're drunk.
And I really need you to focus.
This is a matter of life and death.
First things first I'm only buzzed.
Secondly, you haven't told any of us why we should believe anything that you said, Miss Hope, right? Mikaelson, actually.
Klaus's daughter.
LIZZIE: Vampires can't have babies.
Anyone else thinking that she's a monster? HOPE: I know why you'd think that, because I know that Malivore monsters exits.
I know that the reason why you're celebrating is because you just defeated them.
I also know that you're a witch.
An annoyed witch probably wondering why MG's off with Alyssa Chang instead of you.
Or psychic.
(WHISPERING): She's totally psychic.
You're a vampire.
I'm doubling down on drunk.
(STAMMERS) Also a witch.
Actually, I gave up my magic.
That's gonna make this more difficult.
Make what more difficult? Do you remember that spell that Josie did to get rid of the oni? Which I know about, clearly.
Listen, we don't doubt what you know.
We just doubt how you know it.
I promise.
Landon means a lot to you, too.
I believe you.
And I can teach it to you if it's okay with my dad.
ALARIC: The Salvatore School was built for one purpose to protect young vampires, witches and werewolves from a world that would do them harm.
But it has grown beyond that mission.
Recently my students were forced to save the very world that has forced them into hiding.
And we lost one of our own.
Now we intend to find him, no matter what the cost.
So school's out until we do.
There was a time when I would have told you that one life is a small price to pay for saving an entire town.
But then I became a father.
A father figure to my students.
(YAWNS) And we will not rest until we know what happened to Landon Kirby.
(PHONE BUZZING, CHIMING) Hope.
I've got an idea.
(CRICKETS CHIRPING) (CAR DOORS CLOSE) (BELL JINGLES) We're looking for Pinky.
You found him.
- But I'm closed.
- HOPE: Weird.
Your sign says you're open 24 hours a day.
Been meaning to get a new sign.
Well, we'll be gone as soon as we have what we came for.
(CHUCKLES) What the hell is that? Well, a gift for you, I'm guessing.
A little young, don't you think, pal? - Oh, gross.
- Hey, it's none of my business.
Because your real business is selling black-market supernatural artifacts.
The kid should wait in the car.
That won't be necessary.
Yeah.
I see that.
Why don't you l-lock the door? It's not in here.
Then try being a little more specific about what you're after.
All we know is that it's some sort of vessel.
- Like a ship? - Like a jar.
Or a container or a vase.
Look, the translation's been a bit of a bitch.
But maybe you've heard the story.
Whatever's inside this thing "can grant your heart's most impossible desire," and that's a direct quote I think.
Buddy if-if I had something like that, why would I sell it? You do and you will.
Your heart started to race when you found out what it does.
I heard it, which means that you still have it, so now we're just negotiating the price.
Then here's my offer.
You don't make another move.
(CHUCKLES) Sorry, pal.
But it looks like you brought a knife to a gun fight.
It's a ballistic knife.
So put the shotgun down or you're gonna get this blade shot through your skull.
(CHANTING): Tenebris anima vestra contundito mortem (CONTINUES CHANTING IN ANCIENT LANGUAGE) All right, Hope, stop.
That's a death spell, Hope, don't! Hey, man, get out of here the spell won't work if she can't see you.
(GRUNTING) (BELL JINGLES) - Relax.
I was just scaring him.
- And me.
You promised me that we would do whatever it takes to get Landon back.
This is what it takes.
Get the hell out of my way.
(ENGINE STARTS) (SINGSONGY): Wakey, wakey, eggs and bakey! You're up early and in a good mood.
- What's wrong? - Nothing.
Unless you consider astral projecting into a prison world to search for your frenemy's goo-ified phoenix boyfriend problematic.
That sounds dangerous.
What did Dad say? It was his idea.
Something about how the monsters seem to return to Malivore after we destroy them, and Malivore himself being locked away inside of the prison world, blah, blah, blah.
But on the bright side, it means that Dad trusts us more than ever.
Lizzie, I don't eat bacon since I was a pig in a fairy tale.
And I don't do magic.
And besides, I have to go.
Go where? I-I can take the bacon off.
On the tour, remember? To Mystic Falls High.
Oh, yeah.
Orientation.
I guess that explains the outfit.
Is there something wrong with it? Oh, speaking of fashion, we are getting new uniforms for the flag football team.
Should I put you down as a Stallion or a Timberwolf or one of each, just in case? Uh, I'll get back to you on that.
But good luck today.
You, too.
Mean it.
Oh, this smells amazing.
Can I have a breakfast sammy to go? And yet again, I ask, "Go where?" Well, it's been so weird with Landon being gone here lately.
The couple of us that stayed behind after school went on break, we've tried everything, but we just keep coming up empty.
So I rented a place for a couple of days with a pool so we could, you know, get away and reset.
Mm, I-I was gonna invite you But Alyssa Chang didn't think it would be a good idea.
Well, do you need help washing the dishes or something before I go? Yes.
To the "something.
" KALEB: Good news, bad news.
I can tell you need the good news first, so I found your truck.
ALARIC: Well, that was fast.
They call it vamp speed for a reason, Doc.
As much as I'd like to take the credit, your ex-girlfriend actually did most of the work.
(SIGHS) And how is Mac? Well, about as well as you are.
New job in Savannah's working out for her.
But I think that you should give her a call sometime.
Yeah, if she wanted to see or hear from me, she wouldn't have left town.
I'm gonna give it to you straight, Doc.
You're the one that chose to tell her that Mystic Falls was overrun with supernaturals.
Which is why I don't blame her for making the decision she did.
I was just trying to embrace honesty.
Turns out, it's not much of a hugger.
Okay, well, then tell me the truth.
How'd you let some janky pawnshop owner jack your ride? - It's a long story.
- (KALEB GROANS, SPITS) So how about the bad news? Boiled peanuts are nasty.
HOPE: Mm, Dr.
Saltzman? Hey, listen, I got to call you back.
(CLEARS THROAT) Good morning.
Now, before you kick my ass, I have another idea.
Okay.
Can I kick your ass now? Not until you hear me out.
This is the therapy box.
It creates scenarios.
Trust me, I know.
The last time I was forced to use it, it turned me into a brassy barmaid and made me realize my relationship with Landon was doomed.
Meaning it wasn't wrong.
We're un-dooming things, remember? I called Professor Vardemus.
He said there's a single user setting.
Great, so then I'll just be lonely and annoyed.
The group setting created a simulation designed to resolve what everyone's subconscious was dealing with.
But if it's just you in there, it should create one to deal with your specific problem.
How to get Landon back.
You're giving my subconscious an awful lot of credit.
Or maybe I'm just desperate.
Whatever it takes, right? (CREAKS) Ready, player one.
(GROANS) (WIND WHISTLING) LIZZIE: So, how was it? Ugh, my head.
How was what? Looks like somebody had a little bit too much to drink.
I'll get you some water, as soon as you tell me all about porking Landon.
- I don't know where to start.
- Hey, it's okay.
First times, worst times, am I right? But you are the one who chose to punch her V-card in the creepy-ass cabin of the Mystic Falls maintenance man.
So own it.
Did you know that the locals think he haunts this place? He drowned in Salvatore Lake, like, years ago, but they say that you can still hear him in the woods at night, clinking his tools.
Lizzie, stop.
You're scaring me.
All right, well, then we should change the subject.
(WHISPERS): Back to you and Landon.
I, um I don't remember anything about tonight.
Of course not.
Because Hope Mikaelson is so sweet and smart and sensible.
And she would never make a mistake like Lizzie Saltzman and risk losing her Best Babysitter License.
Here's your bra.
Uh Wait a sec why did we come to the lake? Ask Landon.
He's probably off somewhere writing a song about banging you.
The next time that you decide to get amnesia, just remember that my sister dated him, and she has feelings, too.
And it would totally gut her to know that this meant nothing to you.
(GASPS) (SCREAMS) (GRUNTS, SHOUTS) (WIND WHISTLING) MG: Look at all this destruction.
It's like a bomb went off in Mystic Falls.
A Malibomb.
They call these things prison worlds for a reason.
Malivore's probably trying to find a way out.
I thought we were done with that guy, thing, whatever.
Or maybe he's just lonely, so he spends his days puking up monsters.
(CLATTERING) Ooh.
(SNARLING) (SHRIEKS) Relax.
We're astral projecting.
Remember? It can't see, touch or hurt us.
(SCREECHES) Then let's just, uh, forget that I made that sound.
You know what I'd like to forget about? You and Alyssa Chang.
But we never really talked about that.
How's it going? Cool.
It's-it's-it's cool.
We're cool.
Well, it wasn't cool of her to destroy the ascendant that we used to make this world without telling anyone.
I don't really want to get into any of that.
So if we could get on with looking for Landon? Oh, that's not why I brought you here.
Then why did you? One, because I needed a supernatural source to siphon to power the astral projection spell.
And two, what we're really trying to find is a way to convince Josie to stay at the Salvatore School.
(BUZZES) FINCH (OVER INTERCOM): Can I help you? Hi.
My name is Josette Saltzman.
I'm here for the orientation tour.
I'll be right out.
Actually, there's no need.
I'm dealing with, um, a family emergency, so there's been a change of plans and I won't be attending classes here after all.
(RAPID FOOTSTEPS) Ethan? Josie Saltzman.
I guess we should probably know each other better by now.
I mean, your dad was dating my mom and my sister had that huge crush on you.
But not so huge that you noticed.
Sweet.
(LAUGHS SOFTLY) Water under the bridge, right? I heard your family left town.
They did.
I would have gone with, but the town they moved to already has a QB1.
Oh, so you're quarterback here? That's great.
It will be, once I beat out the guy Coach thinks is gonna start.
(DOOR SQUEAKS) I got to go, Jo.
Name's Finch.
- I'm Jo - Josette Saltzman.
You told me.
Ready for that tour? (FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING) ETHAN: Let me help.
- I'm Ethan.
- I know.
You're the quarterback, rebel.
Dirt bike rider.
Everybody knows.
Well, in that case, it's nice to meet you, too, Hope Mikaelson.
How do you know my n? Okay, it doesn't matter.
Point is, is that you can't be out here, alone in the woods, doing hot guy stuff.
It's just not safe.
Uh, let me guess.
The Mystic Falls maintenance man? Mm-hmm.
Sorry, but I just finished pitching my tent, so I'll take my chances.
He's real, Ethan.
He just killed Lizzie Saltzman.
- I need to find Landon.
- (CHUCKLES) So you're still with that guy? That's your takeaway? Of course I am.
Why wouldn't I be? Because dating is like a passing play.
Hope, you have options.
And sometimes the best one is standing right in front of you, wide open.
Okay, there is no time for me to even attempt parsing a football metaphor right now, okay? - You need to go.
- Well, so do you, because I just saw Landon at the dock with Lizzie's sister.
What were they doing? (GRUNTING) (SCREAMS) (SCREAMS) ("TURN ME LOOSE" PLAYING) I was born to run I was born to dream The craziest boy you ever seen I don't drink the brown stuff.
ALARIC: I called ahead.
Some jackass took my truck.
I had to Uber.
Might as well take advantage.
Even on my knees Makin' love to whoever I please Good.
I've got something for you, too.
I gotta do it my Let's make a deal.
Where's your little negotiator? Dealing with another matter.
Turn me loose, turn me loose Turn me loose.
Josie? Look, I know things have been weird between us since you and Landon broke up, but Who cares about that? There's a killer on the loose.
Yes, the maintenance man.
Have you seen him? It was hard to miss him when he tried slicing me in half, but Landon saved me, but now he's hurt.
That's his blood.
Oh, my God.
Where is he? He went to the Salvatore Lodge.
He went to go find a phone to call my dad.
Why didn't you go with him? Because that's the difference between us.
You solve problems.
I run away from them.
Okay, get to the sheriff's office.
Get help.
Come with me.
I can't.
I have to solve the problem and find Landon.
Jo! Jo! Face me.
So Josie wants to go to Mystic Falls, huh? Uh, that's a lot.
Have you tried telling her how you feel? In my own way.
Subtle manipulation and the occasional act of emotional terrorism.
Not that she's even noticed.
So that's, that's a no.
It's semantics, okay? You're supposed to be helping me, MG.
We need to find a nuclear option, a way to convince Josie that I am right and she needs to stay at the Salvatore School with me.
Why do you think everything you've tried hasn't worked? I didn't bring you here to ask questions, okay? I brought you here to find answers.
If you can answer that question, I kind of think you'll know what to do next.
Now, if it's cool with you, I got to get back.
Alyssa's waiting for me.
Well, she can continue to wait, because this is a prison world, and you can't leave until we find what we came for.
I came here to find Landon.
So if I'm stuck here, that's what I'm gonna do.
PINKY: I know this isn't what you want to hear, but even if Babe Ruth used this bad boy to slug every homer he ever hit, we don't have a deal.
What you're after means a lot to me.
You see, that's what I don't understand.
You were just aware of this artifact recently.
And yet here you are, wanting it.
Oh, I've got my reasons.
Me, too.
Because ever since I got my hands on that thing, I've been having these dreams.
And I'm not the kind of guy that does that.
I know it must sound crazy to you.
Oh, my bar for crazy is set pretty high.
I know these dreams are gonna come true.
Like you said, that artifact's gonna grant my heart's most impossible desire.
If I could just figure out how to open the damn thing.
Well, let me take a look at it.
Maybe I can help.
Thanks for the offer.
Now take your bat and go.
It's not the Bambino's, but it's priceless to me.
I played in a wooden bat league, summers, high school, and the thing never broke, no matter how hard I'd smash things.
And I have been doing a lot of smashing over the years since.
You also stopped that little witch from killing me, so I'm betting you've gone softer than you think.
That little witch has lost more in her life than almost anyone I know.
And I'm here to help her get her heart's desire.
Trust me when I say I am well aware of the line I'm about to cross.
Now, give me the artifact.
It doesn't have to go like this.
Well, in my experience it does.
Now you're gonna get this bat one way or the other.
It's your call, Pinky.
(METALLIC CREAKING) (DOOR CREAKING) (GASPS) Jed, where's Landon? (GAGGING) - LANDON: Hope, is that you? - Landon? Hold on, I'm coming.
LANDON: Hope! Help! Landon? (WEAK GASPING) Dr.
Saltzman.
What-what do I do? Hope Landon's (LOUD BANG) I'm through running.
(BANGING ON DOOR) You've killed all my friends.
Everyone I love is dead.
So you won.
(GRUNTING) Correction: I win.
(WHISPERS): Landon.
(GASPING) (EXHALES): Ooh (GRUNTS) Whew.
Now, that is the Hope Mikaelson I know and love.
What the hell is happening? What, you still haven't figured it out? I don't understand.
Come with me.
I can help.
(LOW GROWL) You're a hard man to find.
I've been on the move.
I've been vamping all over town, searching for Landon.
No luck.
Same.
Not even a chest hair.
I thought you weren't looking.
And I thought about that question you asked me.
You were right.
If I want Josie to stay, I just need to come out and say it.
But you don't want to.
Oh, I totally want to.
It's just that she wants something else.
And maybe I have finally realized that her happiness is just as important as mine is.
So you're cool with Jo going to Mystic Falls? I realized something else, too.
The reason I wanted you here, the reason I snapped at you it wasn't about Josie.
It was about what Alyssa swooped in and did, before I worked up the courage to stop her.
Destroying the ascendant.
(LAUGHS SOFTLY) Sure.
Enjoy your pool party.
Remeo.
(TAKES DEEP BREATH) You look pretty.
A lot less bloody, at least.
(SIGHS) As much as I'd like to stare into those eyes of yours all night, we should probably talk about the fact that I killed you and you're still here.
You're right.
What really matters is what happened to your friends.
You murdered them, then they disappeared.
So will I, once you realize that this is all a game.
But what it's trying to teach you is very real.
The therapy box.
Bigger than it looks on the outside, right? Like you said, your friends died in the scenario it created.
So what do you think that means? I think this game's stupid.
Yeah.
And that I couldn't save them.
Mm-hmm.
Why not? Be honest.
Because all I cared about was saving you.
Well, you know, death can be a metaphor sometimes but not always.
What is that supposed to mean? It's your game.
You tell me.
- I don't know.
- Yes, you do.
Deep down.
What do you want me to say? That I should be happy everyone's waiting outside of this box for me except for you? That the reason why I can't find or-or kill you in this stupid game is because you're already dead? That I should just give up on you? No.
That is what I need you to believe.
Because as much as we both wish it weren't it's the truth.
- Don't talk to me like that.
- Like what? Like you're real.
Like you're him.
But that's the whole point: to help you understand Understand this: you are not him.
Landon would never want me to give up on him.
Are you sure? If I'm in this therapy box, shouldn't I have gotten an escape word once I had my breakthrough? Right? Where the hell is it? It won't show up until you actually accept what I'm telling you.
Not gonna happen.
What are you doing? Let me go.
You first.
You watched me dissolve.
You know being a Tribrid makes you and your blood toxic to Malivore.
That I'm his biological son.
So, deep down what do you really think happened to me? (FLAMES WHOOSHING) I don't want to say it.
(WHISPERS): I know.
We can say it together, if that helps.
On three.
One.
Two.
Three.
I can barely hear you.
Where-where are you, the moon? KALEB: Moon doesn't have a pool, MG.
I just pulled up to the spot.
Where's your skinny ass? I'm running late.
I got sidetracked with Lizzie and Landon stuff.
All right, man, well, get a move on.
I'm gonna fire up the grill.
(DOOR OPENS) What? (QUIETLY): Jed? Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh, damn.
Um uh, hey, on second thought, you stay where you are, um ALYSSA: Jed? Sweetie? I'm hungry.
Oh, God.
The party's over.
FINCH: And that concludes the tour.
Thank you.
This place seems perfect for me right now.
I'm surprised you even noticed.
You were staring at me the whole time.
(LAUGHS) Um, I was just listening very intently.
(LAUGHS): Got it.
So, any questions? Uh, just one.
But it's personal.
Why did Ethan give you the stink eye when he saw you earlier? Me and his sister dated for a minute like, a hot minute and I didn't take the news that she was leaving town too well, which is why I'm on suspension, giving tours and wiping chalkboards.
It's a long story.
You can tell me all about it at lunch.
If I'm cool enough to sit at your table.
(CHUCKLES) Not gonna happen.
I'm perceptive, too.
I heard what you said earlier.
You're not gonna go here.
My sister took the news about me wanting to transfer about as well as you did Maya leaving.
Then why'd you take the tour? Because I wanted to.
I did it for me, and it felt right.
And I really do want to come here.
If I can sit at your table.
That a metaphor or something? Hmm, what do you think? I'll tell you at lunch.
If you ever come back.
(SIGHS) What are you doing? Oh, you know, just tidying up.
Hope, you said it yourself, this place isn't real.
- You can't stay here.
- Well, not like this, but with a little imaginary paint and elbow grease - You're in denial.
- I'm not.
- See? - I don't care.
Not if it means I get to be with you.
Or at least close enough.
But what about your friends? You saw what happened to them.
This is all just a metaphor.
Right? (CHUCKLES) I mean, me being powerless, you haunting me, them being in trouble.
So, for once in my life, I am not gonna sacrifice what I love to metaphorically save anyone.
Yeah, no offense, but that's kind of what you do.
Not this time.
So that stupid word can keep appearing, but I'm not leaving.
(WHOOSHING) I didn't say the word.
Why am I here? Well, in layman's terms, I unplugged the damn thing.
Which Vardemus assured me was safe to do with a single user.
- Maybe he was wrong.
- No, maybe you were.
Hope.
What happened in there? You should know, since this was your plan all along.
You didn't put me in that box to find Landon, you put me in it so I'd give up on him.
Mittent.
(GROANING) If that were true, why would I pull you out? (GROANS) Let me show you something.
(GRUNTS) Is that the artifact we were looking for? How did you find that? (CHUCKLES SOFTLY) (GROANS) By being wildly irresponsible.
We'll have to do some research, figure out how to use the damn thing.
Or better plan: I make a wish, pop it open, see what happens.
- Can't.
- You reek of blood.
Don't tell me that you're gonna start being responsible now.
I've tried to open it.
It's locked.
Probably spelled shut.
(WHIRRING) Go ahead, make your wish.
Uh, why are we out here? (LAUGHS) She may not look like much on the outside, but (HINGES SQUEAK) Baby's got it where it counts.
Here.
I don't really drink like that.
And I just saw Jed naked.
Make the exception.
Okay.
(BOTH LAUGH) (SIGHS) (GROANS) (EXHALES) I know it's not exactly the party you were planning, but (CHUCKLES) (SIGHS) I feel so stupid.
- How did I think dating Maleficent - (LAUGHS) was gonna end well? It's that gentle heart of yours.
And this one is as much on me as it is on you.
I would love to hear that math.
(OPENS BOTTLE) I made a promise to you, once upon a time, that if anyone wanted to come at you, they had to go through me.
And I wasn't around.
Mm, but you were only gone 'cause you were trying to help Hope and Dr.
Saltzman.
And there's no point, okay? I know it's an unpopular opinion around these parts, but Landon is (SIGHS) Landon's gone, bro.
And he ain't coming back.
So I should've been here, worrying about things I can actually change, instead of (SIGHS) But you don't know that.
Okay, did you and Lizzie find Landon in that prison world or not? No.
But I did stand up to her.
- You you - For myself.
You did? You? (LAUGHS): Yeah, i-in a gentlemanly way.
How'd that go? Way better than I expected.
(LAUGHS) That's cool, man.
Just promise me you'll keep that up, instead of going along with it whenever you feel you need to.
You know, like, when Jed's trying to get at your girl.
I will.
As long as you promise me you won't give up on Landon.
Man More than promise.
I'm-I'm talking, like, a - a vow.
- (CHUCKLES) So I say yes and you say no.
- Hmm? - Yeah.
JOSIE: We need to have a difficult conversation.
I know.
I know you think me going to school in Mystic Falls is wrong.
Because it is.
Dressed like that.
You only get one chance to make a good first impression, and you don't want to be the girl that wears a uniform to a school that doesn't have uniforms.
This is great.
Really great.
Shockingly great.
You're okay with this? No.
But I'll get there.
As long as there are twin cuddles available on demand, and you always remember that this is your home.
Come back home I'm so lucky you're my sister.
Just come home.
I know.
It looks like you're having a private moment.
I'll just come back.
It's okay.
Stay.
Because there's nothing in here to keep me company.
So much for that wish.
I found another lead.
It's a Grecian urn.
It was stolen out of a museum in Athens ten years ago.
It's rumored that it can reanimate spirits, but But you don't think we should go after it.
You think we should stop.
I think we should go after anything that'll solve this.
But it isn't just about us anymore, Hope.
It's hurting other people, too.
I know.
This artifact literally came up empty, and the school needs to reopen.
And it can't if you keep putting everything else aside like you have been.
Or like I've been with all my friends.
It would have still been worth it if if Landon was still You graze your knees and cry He's gone.
Um, and this is how we should honor him.
Did you get all that from the therapy box? In an extremely annoying way.
(CHUCKLES) Well, I should probably be using that more frequently.
I'm sorry.
(SIGHS): Believe me I know how much it hurts to lose people we love.
Just tell me what's wrong, and you know that I'll Make it right Whatever your worries Remember what's yours is mine If I was holding the world I'd let it go So my arms could hold you I'm gonna need your help.
I can't believe that this is happening to me again.
He's gone.
