Legacies (2018) s04e08 Episode Script

You Will Remember Me

In physics, pressure is defined as the force applied to the surface of an object over its area.
In psychology, pressure is expressed as the stress associated with the expectation to perform.
People sing about it, write about it, collapse under it, and run from it.
But some of us seem to keep chasing it.
Crap.
Don't say it, don't say it, don't I have to go.
I'm Dr.
Josette Saltzman, or just Josie, a surgical intern at Mikaelson Memorial Hospital.
It was always my dream job, ever since my sister told me it was when I was six.
I'm so sorry.
Save that for when you miss our date tonight.
Three times in a month has to be a record.
- I'll be there.
- I worry about you, Dr.
Saltzman.
I'm not a real doctor yet.
And you don't need to worry about me.
Well, if I don't, who will? Wait five minutes before you follow me out.
My mother was a surgeon, my father was a surgeon, and me? I'm barely holding it together.
This is a disaster.
Can we wake her up or something? Professor Vardemus says it's risky to pull someone out mid-session.
We're supposed to let the process finish out on its own.
What if Hope tampered with the therapy box? Jo could be experiencing something terrible.
She could be dying in there over and over again.
She's fine.
Sure, it can be scary at times, but if her experience is anything like mine, it'll be revelatory.
I don't mean to pry, but do you mind sharing what happened while you were in there? A way to deal with our Hope problem.
But we took our best shot.
Hope doesn't want our help.
Well, if Salvatore's Got No Talent is our best shot, we're in trouble.
You're lucky Hope didn't murder the whole school while I was gone.
Next time might be different.
I don't believe Hope will be returning.
And what if you're wrong? Uh, either way, we still have to be ready.
Which is why I am going to go train with Ethan.
You want to come with? I'm gonna wait here.
In case she wakes up.
Do you need help with your Hope plan? I know what I need to do.
But I could use some inspiration for the how part.
Hmm.
I'll take another.
And get in touch with the rest of the Triad.
Set a meeting for later this afternoon.
We're gonna have to deal with the Tribrid sooner than expected.
I'm sorry, is there a problem? Three, to be exact.
And you're the first.
Let me make sure I understand what you're saying.
The only way to get to Peace is if you have a coin, and the only way to get a coin is if you do something good, like reconcile with someone from your past or help them move on to Peace? More or less.
Uh, we have a theory that Mm-mmm.
I have a theory that the whole point of Limbo is to atone for the mistakes of your life.
Once you've done that, the boat to Peace awaits.
That makes about as much sense as anything else in this place.
It is a bit odd.
I mean, here the three of us are, dead as decency, yet enjoying milkshakes.
Excellent work, by the way.
Yeah, well, years of practice.
How can we taste them? Hold them in our hands? Why does it even matter? Look, we have to play the hand that we're dealt.
No, what matters is that on my way into town, I learned that Limbo is teeming with scores of lost souls.
I mean, it's practically Miami.
So if Landon's theory is correct, there'll be no shortage of people for us to help.
And help ourselves in doing so.
Would you knock that off? Cackling aside, you guys have done well.
Because now that we know the rules of the game, we know how to cheat.
Because once we get that third coin, oh, we're not going to Peace.
- Uh-uh.
- What? We're gonna steal that boat and go home.
Why would we do that? Is something wrong there? Is Hope okay? I know what you're thinking.
If this is my story, why isn't my dad the one the hospital's named after? Why aren't I scrubbing in on a coronary artery bypass graft? Because this isn't my story.
It's hers.
Dr.
Hope Mikaelson, technically an intern like me, but already a legend here.
You're drooling on the glass again.
I'm learning.
Which is exactly what you should be doing.
She's helping pioneer a new technique.
I told you to knock if it was important.
Hope Mikaelson being annoyingly perfect is just Tuesday.
Look at how steady she is.
So focused and in control.
It's like she doesn't even feel the pressure.
Whatever.
Wake me if she screws up.
Oh, my God.
You don't look so good.
You should get out of the sun.
You're getting a little pruney.
Incendia! You know, if you just would've talked to me before attacking, I would've told you that this candle's nullifying our magic, but I still have my vampire and werewolf powers.
Because you are an affront to nature herself.
I'm not the one who's using black magic to stay young.
Not very natural.
My vanity aside, you are cursed, child.
A Tribrid was never meant to exist, and sullies the bloodlines of all three species.
So, kill me if you must, but there will be no hiding from your fate.
Do I look like I'm hiding? Why don't you tell me where the vampire and the werewolf that you're working with are? I can have this conversation with them, too.
And if I do, I will be just as dead.
Ours is an unbreakable alliance.
And any act of treason is punishable by Fire.
Yes, I know.
Except you're the witch.
You bound that covenant spell in the first place.
You're not dumb enough to put your life on the line.
You're bluffing.
And to keep with the poker metaphor, I call.
I am warning you, Miss Mikaelson.
The Alpha will tear out your blasphemous tongue.
And I'm warning you, Agatha St.
Clair, you're just giving me ideas.
You will find the others at the Crap.
Oh, integrity.
I don't miss it.
Damn, Agatha.
Guessing you had a run-in with the Tribrid? Yeah, we met.
And she was kind enough to tell me where your little werewolf den is, but it was pretty hard to decipher given all the screaming that she was doing.
I'm looking for a Greg? Yeah, well, you found him.
And my entire pack, princess.
So is there anything you want to say before we do what predators do? - I'm here to challenge you.
- Yeah, no crap.
Officially.
To an alpha challenge.
Yeah, you can't do that.
They seem to disagree.
Pack animals, am I right? We call him Dr.
Death, because he can kill your career with the snap of his fingers.
The only person even Hope is terrified of.
Also known as Dr.
Ted.
What happened to Hope? Dr.
Mikaelson is resting.
And you should be working, Dr.
Saltzman.
Is she gonna be okay? She has a rare genetic condition called CMT.
I believe it's what's causing her tremors.
How do you treat CMT? You don't.
Now get back to work.
And make sure that butcher of a sister of yours hasn't minced any of her patients on your way.
Dr.
Ted, Hope is the best surgeon that we have by a mile.
Think of all the lives that she could save.
If you give up on her, you're basically giving up on all the people that she could help one day.
We are doctors, not dreamers.
We deal in hard facts and science, not emotion.
You're letting your friendship with her get in the way of your judgment.
But we all depend on her.
We'll fall apart without her.
No.
No one is indispensable.
And like it or not, Dr.
Mikaelson's career in surgery is over.
Please forgive me, sir.
I had no idea about the land mine.
If I had, I would've warned you before it blew up in your face.
Since when are there monsters in Limbo? Oh, I've been pondering that myself while you were failing.
Perhaps they've always gone here, just like us.
Or it could be a result of Malivore's destruction.
Well, either way, we're not sticking around long enough to find out.
Of course not.
I mean, you clearly excel at making amends.
I-It just might be useful to find someone you've wronged that isn't a fish.
Way ahead of you.
Vera.
Alaric Saltzman.
Elizabeth's father.
How can he help me? Oh.
Aw Oh, come on.
Okay, not exactly what we were going for.
Where's Fake Pedro? I'm pretty sure I just killed him.
Yeah, apparently, my powers only work in high-pressure situations or when Malivore's controlling me.
It's good that you're clutch, but true clutch is being able to do it every time.
That's why we call it practice.
Let's run it again.
This isn't exactly what I had in mind when you said we'd work on my powers.
How is this any of this gonna help in the fight against Hope? We are not fighting her yet.
And if it ever comes to that, your most valued skill is your ability to get people to safety.
Cool.
Safety Guy.
No wonder that superhero name isn't taken.
Uh, Rescue Guy.
All right? And the greatest offense is a good defense.
That's not even the phrase.
Sorry to interrupt weird bro time, but I need you.
Then I'll help.
Uh, but I did promise Ethan that I'd I wasn't talking to you.
You got a sec? Good thing I'm Rescue Guy, huh? Where are you taking me? You sure about this? You and me have been done for, like, almost a year.
Oh, we're done.
I just need your help.
Well, actually, Hope does.
She and I are also done, remember? But you still love her.
Sure.
Some part of me always will.
Well, then, I need to talk to that part, because Dr.
Death thinks that she has some rare genetic condition, and he's gonna go to the board to revoke her license.
But I have an idea, and it involves going into the old personnel files.
Which interns don't have access to.
But an attending does.
We could both lose our jobs.
And this hospital, with her family name on it, could lose her.
So that's a risk I'm willing to take.
Are you? Thank you.
Wait five minutes before you follow me out.
Yeah, okay.
Had enough? Now that you mention it, yeah.
Douchebag in the corner pocket.
Loser racks.
Our alpha's dead.
Long live the alpha.
Now that I'm your alpha, you have to do whatever I say, right? - Of course.
- Then get up.
We're wolves, not royalty.
Tell me where the vampire is.
I'm assuming you've met them all.
We're branded.
If we do tell Rules are rules, remember? Yes? More like a giant no.
I'm looking for the vampire who lives here.
You're not looking at much of anything.
You must be Miss Mikaelson.
Why don't you just, um, run along and tell that vampire that I've already killed the witch and the wolf before this gets any creepier.
The mistress of the house has been expecting you and extends you every courtesy.
Please come in.
This is insane.
You actually expect me to forgive you for running a supernatural school in our town and not telling any of the people whose lives it destroyed? Including my daughter.
It's a lot.
Yeah.
But I'm here to make peace.
For both of our sakes.
Once again, your application is denied.
I don't care about this stupid, little coin that you keep talking about, Dr.
Saltzman.
My daughter was eaten by a giant spider.
In my defense, I was only learning about the existence of monsters at the time of Dana's consumption.
But let's talk about you.
I didn't even know that you had died.
Of a broken heart.
And lung cancer.
- Oh.
- How are you not in hell? Well, because, technically, hell was a creation of a psychic named Cade, and it's since been destroyed.
Oh, I beg to differ.
This is hell.
Why do you even bother apologizing if you clearly don't think you've done anything wrong? She's got a point.
Not helping, Landon.
Ms.
Lilien, you're being kind of hypocritical, don't you think? What is that supposed to mean? You are trapped in Limbo because you are one of the two most miserable people that ever walked the face of the earth.
And the other is your daughter.
So you've never met yours? - Lizzie's got nothing to do with this.
- Oh! That is the first thing that you've said that I actually agree with.
As erratic and intolerable as I find Elizabeth I forgive her.
She's only screwed-up because you're her father.
Uh-uh.
You being stuck here with all your regrets is exactly what you deserve.
Hey, stud.
Which way did you say that boat was? It's just back the way we came.
Out of my way, creep! What are you taking her side for? I thought we were on the same team.
We are.
I'll go find someone else you can apologize to.
We're never getting out of here.
Oh, on the contrary.
I believe I know exactly who you need to talk to.
If you've come for inspiration, I'm afraid you're going to have to wait.
Actually, I just came to vent.
But this looks therapeutic, too.
Elizabeth problems? I'm just a little worried about her.
I mean, she grabbed Ethan to help her with her mysterious plan.
And I guess that bothered me, too.
Hope was right.
Being the leader's lonely.
Sometimes the right decisions are the hardest ones to make.
Speaking of which, Elizabeth asked me to inspire her.
Maybe I'm a bad friend, but I don't trust that she's thinking clearly yet, so I turned her down.
Uh, you're not being a bad friend.
You're protecting her from herself.
Do you mind if I ask your opinion on something? Although it may feel like a burden to you.
What kind of burden? This tree is the magical loophole nature created when Hope became the Tribrid.
It is deadly to her.
Are you saying This is the only thing on this planet that can kill her.
Yeah, that was it.
Should I destroy it in order to protect Hope or begin sharpening it to protect the world from her? When Hope was back at the school she handed me a sword to see if I had the guts to kill.
And she said that I was weak as a leader because I wouldn't go that far.
And she was right.
I won't go that far, no matter what.
Hope is one of us, even if she doesn't know it.
So I say burn it.
(SPEAKS YORUBA) Invisique saeclum.
What on earth are you doing here? You're not scheduled to scrub in for this procedure.
- Take over.
- Yes, Doctor.
Your diagnosis was wrong.
CMT passes from father to daughter, so if Hope has it, then her dad had to have it, too.
Now, Dr.
Klaus Mikaelson was tested for CM after he lost a patient on the table years ago, but he didn't have any of the genetic markers.
My father signed this report clearing him, and my dad hated Klaus.
You don't have access to that file.
You can punish me if you want.
But whatever Hope has, it's not CMT.
She is the best of us.
Ah.
Very well.
You may tell the staff to stop cleaning out her locker.
On your way to clean out yours.
Dr.
Mikaelson has a bright future here in surgery, but yours is over.
I see him in you.
Who, the pig? Well, I guess this relationship's off to a rocky start.
But don't worry.
I know exactly how it ends.
I was speaking of Niklaus.
What do you know about my father? Everything little bird.
For my name is Aurora De Martel.
I'm sorry.
Who? Um, Aurora.
Daughter of the Count De Martel.
First vampire of Rebekah's sire line.
Your father's lover.
And his greatest enemy.
The object of his art, his desire and his depthless scorn.
Surely, he must have mentioned me.
Klaus was the most feared vampire on the planet, and yet he put me in a wall to desiccate.
And when that failed to hold me, your stupid mother conspired to trap me in an endless slumber.
Right.
Now that you mention it, I think I do remember who you are.
You were left under a rug in a spare room of the family compound.
Sort of like an old lamp no one knew what to do with.
You know, it's your family's arrogance that allowed the fools that were my partners in Triad to rescue me without so much as being noticed.
Thank you ever so much for killing them, by the way.
But you will answer for the disrespect I have been shown.
Rest assured, I know exactly what to do with you, miracle child.
Oh, really? Well, you can't kill me.
So, if that's a part of your master plan Death lasts but a moment.
No.
You will wear the fate your father deserved.
I've been waiting for you.
They told me what you did.
You saved my career.
I don't know how I can thank you.
You can start by telling me the truth.
About what? Found that in your locker.
You do have CMT.
I can explain.
Even a mediocre intern like me can figure out this one.
You were taking PX to control the symptoms, and you ran out of your prescription, which was in somebody else's name, obviously.
And you scrubbed into that surgery knowing the risk that you were taking with an innocent life.
Are you gonna tell anyone? Unless you telling me why you did it convinces me otherwise.
Why did you risk everything that you had? So, this has all been about my father? He dumped you.
Get over it.
Repairing the sort of damage I have experienced at the hands of your father is not so simple.
Klaus destroyed my life, my very sanity over the course of centuries.
So can you imagine my disappointment when I was woken up and learned that he had taken the coward's way out for you.
Well, I guess now would be a good time to tell you that my humanity is off, so guilt-tripping me is just about as impossible as killing me.
Then you're also a coward.
But perhaps what I have planned for you will fix that little problem, too.
Well, I'll give you this much.
You're great at underwhelming revelations.
Yeah, am I supposed to be impressed? Do you know nothing of importance, child? I'm tempted to say that I do just so you'll stop talking.
This blade was imbued with black magic by a witch named Papa Tunde.
It's one of four bones culled from the Hollow.
Oh, I see that name rings a bell, at least.
The Hollow is ancient history.
Almost like you're about to be.
This blade all but broke your father.
Do you think yourself so strong as him? You know, I'll tell you what.
Why don't you come at me with that thing.
Let's find out.
Darling, no, that wouldn't be very sporting, would it? I'm royalty, after all, and you are my guest.
This is my home, so I hold the high ground.
It's only fair that I give you a head start.
You want to play games? Tag.
You're it.
I've known that I'm supposed to be a surgeon since the day that I was born.
That destiny, it's all I've ever known.
I mean, every moment of my life has been pushing me towards it.
I don't even know who I'd be without it.
That's your father talking.
He had the condition, too, didn't he? He must've hid it from my dad or faked his test results somehow.
My dad didn't fake anything.
Your father did.
He knew about my dad's CMT.
He covered it up.
That's a lie.
My dad would never Of course he would.
Same reason my dad lied.
Same reason I did.
Keeping that secret, it was the best way to help the greatest number of people.
Sick or not, this hospital needed my dad.
His innovation kept the research money coming in, just like mine will.
Don't worry.
I'll tell the board how crucial it is to reinstate you.
I don't want to stay.
I thought that if I didn't live up to my legacy not for me, but for everyone else, that that it would ruin my life.
But when I was fired today, I just felt relief.
At first, I didn't understand why.
But I get it now.
I've been trying to live up to your standard, too.
Ever since we started working together, I always thought that you were so much better than me.
But you feel that pressure, too.
And that pressure has caused you to lose your way.
And I just don't want that for me.
I still want to be a doctor.
To help people.
But, um, I can't do that to the best of my ability at this hospital.
There's too much history.
Too much pressure.
Too many expectations.
Too many people that I love that are always in desperate need of help.
I felt the need to live up to the school that was literally created for me.
And the pressure to save the school and my friends means that I will never live a life of my own.
What are you talking about? This is a hospital, not a school.
Actually it's a therapy box.
And, um, if I'm gonna help the real you out there I need to leave.
I think the wrong one of us is in this hospital bed.
Just rest, Hope.
I finally figured out how I'm gonna fix this.
What are you doing? Wait, you heard what Cleo said.
That tree can kill Hope.
Which is exactly why we need to salvage whatever we can.
When you said you needed my help, you didn't mention that I would be an accessory to murder.
This is self-defense.
You just heard them.
They won't fight her.
No one who's gone to this school with Hope their whole lives can see it.
They all have a giant, Tribrid-shaped blind spot.
But you just got here, so you don't.
And did the therapy box teach you that? What it taught me is sometimes doing the right thing means people calling you a villain.
I don't know, Lizzie.
Malivore already made me a villain, and I hated it.
I'm asking you to be a hero.
I'm going after Hope alone.
But I need someone here who's willing to protect everyone who won't protect themselves.
Who will do whatever it takes to finish the job just in case I fail.
What if I phase out of here and warn MG and Cleo instead? You'll only be putting them in more danger.
And I can't have that.
Is that a threat? The only person I want to hurt is Hope.
I like you, Ethan.
So I might do a spell.
Make you forget we ever had this conversation.
I might even be able to give you another memory.
For all you'll know, we walked out to the old mill.
I wanted to talk.
So you heard me out and held my hand.
It was really nice.
So I either lie to my best friend or the best memory I have of you and me is just a fake? Like I said, it's your choice.
Well, it's about time.
I was getting so bored, I almost ate some of this crap.
There's some fresh blood in that decanter if you'd like.
You're crazy.
Yes, of course, darling.
I know.
I'd like to know more about this.
I mean, I'm assuming it's the real weapon being that it's the one you attacked me with.
The other one was merely a distraction.
A bone from that pig, actually.
Tell me what it did to my father.
Or was that a lie, too? Burrowed into his chest, rendering him unconscious in a state of impossible and unending agony.
Hmm.
Almost like having a conversation with you.
And yet here you are, prolonging our discussion.
Death lasts but a moment, right? No, Hope.
You have no idea what you're doing.
You're reckless, just like your father.
Only when it comes to you.
You see, maybe you're the problem.
Then being the Tribrid doesn't make you unique.
You're just like every other Mikaelson I've come across.
And just like them, I swear to you, you will remember me.
- What is that? - Oh, don't worry, darling.
I'll explain everything once we wake up.
So much for defensive training.
Dumb joke.
I'm sorry about earlier.
I should not have been giving you a hard time.
No.
It's fine.
You were right.
I was keeping you on defense on purpose.
But it's not because I don't trust you or I don't think you could handle it.
It's because I don't want to see you get hurt on the front lines.
I don't know what I'm doing with this whole leadership thing, but I don't think I'm the kind of leader that'll ever be okay with leaving one of my own behind.
Actually, that sounds like the kind of leader I want looking out for me.
So, you and Lizzie, huh? We just took a walk out to the old mill.
She just wanted to talk.
It was nice.
I think.
Honestly, man, Lizzie just has a way of confusing me.
I thought I might find you here.
Sorry.
I got a little distracted.
I know I'm supposed to be finding somebody else you pissed off, which shouldn't be too hard.
Well, there's no need.
Because as Ted rightfully pointed out to me, the person I need to talk to is you.
I'm not sure I know what you mean.
I didn't know what I'd be getting you into when Hope and I brought you to the Salvatore School.
When I decided that you could stay.
This school was my home.
About the only one I ever had.
Yeah, but you gave up everything for it, Landon.
- Including your life.
- I don't regret it.
- We're good.
- Are we? I mean, you were ready to move on to Peace until me and my big mouth showed up.
And of course I wanted you to tell me what happened.
I want to find a way back to Hope.
To help her.
But to do that, you have to give up everything all over again.
I just thought we'd already done enough, you know? That me and Hope deserved to have the choice we made matter.
To be happy even though we couldn't do it together.
I mean, we fought our stupid fate for so long.
And we fulfilled it.
So now I have no idea what the hell I'm supposed to do.
I know.
And I'm sorry.
It's not unlike me to get so caught up in what other people need that I miss what's really happening.
I let everything go today to do something that I thought was right.
And for the first time in a long time, I could see myself clearer.
I pulled an action figure out of a toddler's throat today, and somehow this is weirder.
I told you I'd show up.
No crisis to run off to? I didn't say that.
But it can wait a little bit.
You know what this means, right? We might actually have a for real, like, not even kidding, like, honest-to-God date night.
I'm gonna run back inside, change into something with less kid saliva on it, and we'll go.
Don't move.
I think it was Queen who got it right.
Pressure is the terror of knowing what the world is about.
Solus.
The only way to prevent everything from going boom is to let that pressure go.
Don't you leave me like that again.
What did you do to me? Isn't it obvious? I tricked you, little bird.
Thanks to a little magic from dear, departed Agatha.
She's been watching you a long time, Hope.
That's how she knew to make the Trident.
You didn't stab me with Papa Tunde's blade.
That was destroyed in order to raise the Hollow.
If only you weren't so ignorant and knew your family history, you might still inhabit this tiny body.
Yours isn't so roomy, either.
That's been the least of its problems.
Does the back of your neck itch, by any chance? But you betrayed Triad.
You should've burned with the others.
I did no such thing.
I merely manipulated you into killing them.
Magic and loopholes and so it goes.
I want my body back.
That body's ancient and powerful by vampiric standards.
But is it any match for the Tribrid without my mind in it? Tell you what.
Come at me, and let's find out.
I'm quite cute when I'm angry.
I thought you might want to know that Josie's awake.
And the reason I chose not to inspire you today.
Your inspo well was dry.
I get it.
That was a lie.
The truth is I turned you away because I was afraid you were not being honest.
And I was worried about what I might inspire you to do.
Which was, in turn, not very honest of me.
I became aware of a weapon that can kill the Tribrid.
Instead of telling anyone, I kept it to myself, too afraid of what others might choose to do with it.
But in doing that, I chose for you.
I destroyed it.
You did the right thing.
That was not the reaction I expected.
I've been in a dark place.
If I'd known about a weapon that could hurt Hope, I might have done something awful.
We're good, Cleo.
Thank you.
