Light as a Feather (2018) s01e03 Episode Script

Dead as a Doornail

1 [MCKENNA.]
Previously on Light As A Feather Olivia Richmond had everything.
Perfect smile, perfect friends.
But it all disappeared in an instant that night.
[VIOLET.]
Olivia, wait.
Where are you going? [OLIVIA.]
Anywhere but here.
[DEB.]
Say your goodbyes.
We're going.
Mom, you are humiliating me.
Maybe you deserve it.
- [HORN HONKING.]
- Aaah! Bam.
Police confirm a teenage girl was killed in the crash.
McKenna, is everything okay? [OLIVIA.]
Severed arm on the freeway.
- Pretty twisted.
- [VIOLET.]
Thanks.
So who wants to go next? Candace Preston loved family, friends, flea markets, scary movies.
Really, there was only one thing that Candace never liked.
Ever since she was little, she hated the ocean.
The brine, the waves, the murkiness, the foreboding sense that once you go under, you might never find your way back to the surface.
- And then one day - [CANDACE SCREAMS.]
she went under.
No one saw the panic, the flailing.
Flailing is a very bad idea, by the way, since it uses up all your oxygen and, after that, runs out.
Well No one heard her screams.
-[MUFFLED SCREAM.]
- The water flooded into her lungs, throat spasmed, and right when her heart gave out, Candace's very last thought was, "I never should have gone anywhere near that deep, blue ocean.
" [CHURCH BELL TOLLING.]
[ALEX.]
We should head in.
This is really happening.
I know.
She knew I hated the ocean.
[ALEX.]
What? Who? Violet.
Halloween night when she predicted our deaths.
Are you serious right now? Alex, she knew exactly how Olivia was gonna die.
Yeah, and now she's dead.
That's what matters.
So, what, you want to go to the cops or something? I don't know.
Maybe.
Candace, you know how crazy you sound right now? You need to snap out of it.
[MCKENNA.]
Hey.
What's goin' on? [ALEX.]
Candace thinks we should go to the police because, I don't know, Violet's a witch and hexed Olivia? That certified freak knew exactly how our friend was gonna die, but I'm the crazy one? So you think she cut Olivia's brakes or something? I don't know, okay? I don't know how she did it, but I'm telling you, something's not right.
Look, I know that we're all really freaked out right now, but this is not the time.
Olivia's gone.
Can we please focus on that right now? Please.
[CHURCH BELL TOLLING.]
[ORGAN PLAYING.]
What the hell is she doing? It's so good to see you guys.
I can't believe this is real.
[SNIFFLES.]
[PASTOR.]
We are gathered here today to celebrate the life of our beloved friend and daughter, Olivia Richmond.
Before we begin the service, Olivia's brother Henry will share some words.
[HENRY.]
My sister was more than just a sister.
You know, she was my best friend.
[CRYING.]
You know, Olivia was Um, she was an amazing soul, who always, uh, saw the best in people, even if they couldn't see it in themselves.
I'll always wonder what kind of life she would have led.
What kind of career she would have chosen.
- [HEARTBEAT.]
- [HENRY'S VOICE FADES.]
[BREATHING HARD.]
[GASPING.]
[PANICKED BREATHING.]
McKenna, what's wrong? It's okay.
I'm here.
I'm right here.
[THEME MUSIC PLAYING.]
[DOG BARKING.]
Hey.
If you're not feeling up for school, you should just stay home.
Um, it's fine.
We all have counseling sessions today.
We could call Dr.
Schwartz.
I mean, I know you haven't seen her in a while, but I said it's fine.
Listen, Mack? I have been trying to give you space, but you've just been shutting me down for days now.
[MCKENNA.]
Yeah, after you humiliated me at the party.
You know, Dad asked me to live with him after you guys split, and I told him no, because I wanted to make sure that you were okay, and now it's been two years, and I can't keep holding your hand.
I have my own life, and I have friends who need me right now.
I have to go.
[DOOR OPENS AND CLOSES.]
[NOREEN.]
And then Olivia told me my shoes were really cute, and I feel like if she didn't die, we could have been really good friends.
That's great, Noreen.
Thank you for that story.
Anyone else like to share? Okay.
Keep in mind if you want to talk in a more anonymous setting, the peer counseling hotline will have extended hours this week.
And for those of you who'd like to volunteer for the hotline, there will be an orientation after school today.
We have a representative from the peer counseling team.
Violet Simmons? I got certified as a peer counselor at my last school, so I'm happy to help.
Peer counsel? Who would want to listen to her? So if any of you want to sign up or talk? Thank you, Violet.
What a wonderful service you're providing.
[CLASS BELL RINGS.]
Oh, and one more thing.
McKenna Brady, can you please stop by the principal's office? Uh, okay.
Trey, it's me, McKenna.
I heard about you being in the accident, and I'm so sorry, but I really need to talk to you.
Can you call me back? There you are.
Everything okay? Yeah, what did Morris want? Nothing.
He just wanted to check in.
It's kind of pointless, but he means well.
- [CANDACE.]
That's it? - [MCKENNA.]
Pretty much.
And this, uh, student council thing, I guess they're trying to find someone to fill Olivia's spot.
Hey, guys, you think Olivia's parents will be okay with the GoFundMe thing? I mean, I love the idea of planting the tree in the school in Olivia's name, but maybe it's too soon.
We should ask.
Maybe we should stop by their place after school? Yeah, and I'll bring this to them, too.
[VIOLET.]
Hey.
Did I hear you guys are stopping by the Richmonds'? Uh yeah, why? I just heard what you guys are doing for Olivia's family, and it sounds amazing.
Thanks.
We should go.
[VIOLET.]
Do you mind if I tag along? I really want to give my condolences.
I didn't get a chance at the funeral.
Uh, sure.
I guess.
Okay.
I'll see you guys there.
What? What was I supposed to say? "Don't be nice to Olivia's parents"? So you thought it'd be better to invite that psychopath.
Great idea, Alex.
[ALEX SCOFFS.]
[CLASS BELL RINGS.]
[CANDACE.]
We just wanted to check in to see if there was anything we could do.
[CHOKING UP.]
Thank you, um this means a lot.
We're still trying to figure out what happened.
I know the police have talked to the boy who was driving the car, but I But we don't need to talk about that right now.
[FOOTSTEPS.]
This was a very kind gesture.
Olivia was lucky to have such good friends.
Excuse me.
[MRS.
RICHMOND.]
She loved you all so much.
You were her girls.
I wish there was something I could say or do to make this better, but I can't.
When Jennie died, people kept trying to help me.
I remember them suggesting therapy, meditation.
The only thing that really helped was time.
One day, it was like this huge weight had been lifted.
It was still there, but it got better.
The next day, and the day after that I just want you to know that you should take as much time as you need.
I'll be here.
[WHISPERING.]
It's gonna be okay.
[CANDACE.]
Oh, and we also wanted to ask, we were talking about maybe planting a tree at the school in Olivia's name and doing a fundraiser.
Like a, uh, GoFundMe campaign? Yeah, if it's okay with you guys.
Actually, I made a mock-up of the campaign if you guys want to take a look.
We all know how much Olivia loved our school, so we just wanted to memorialize her there in some way.
I know I wasn't very close with Olivia, but she was such a wonderful friend to all of us, I just I wanted to repay her in some way.
I think it's a great idea.
Yes.
This is exactly what Olivia would have wanted.
Thank you so much for organizing this, Violet.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
What the hell was that? I'm sorry I didn't run it by you guys.
I just heard you talking about it, and it sounded like such a good idea, I wanted to help out.
We don't need your help, Violet.
You barely knew Olivia.
Well, obviously, I didn't know her as long as you guys did, but she was really nice to me, and I felt like we were becoming friends.
Yeah, because she felt bad for you.
You don't even know her.
You don't know any of us! I was just trying to do something nice.
If you guys are upset, I'll take the page down.
Look, I know what you're doing, okay? You might be fooling everyone else with this "nice girl" bullshit, but I know a psychopath when I see one.
So just stay the hell away from us.
I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to upset anyone.
I have to go.
McKenna.

Radiology you have a call on line one.
- Hey.
- Hey.
[MCKENNA.]
How you doin'? I guess that's kind of a stupid question.
Um Look, I know that we haven't really talked in a while, and this is kind of crazy, but I really need to know.
Did anything weird happen before the crash? Oh.
So that's why you're here? You think I was high, too? No.
No.
I'm just trying to figure out what happened.
I know what everybody's saying about me, okay? I sell off a little of my ADD prescription, and all of sudden, I'm the drug kingpin.
And for the record, I wasn't high.
I don't even get high.
It's not too far of a stretch to assume that, is it? Christ, McKenna, I didn't kill your friend! And while we're at it, I didn't kill your sister, either.
Jennie was my friend.
I would have never given her the You know what? I'm done.
Think whatever you want.
You should go.
Yeah.
Good call.
[CLASS BELL RINGS.]
Shit! Do you want to jump in? Just because I'm a lesbian doesn't mean I know what I'm doing.
That makes two of us.
I mean, not the lesbian part.
I've never taken Shop before.
Look, I'm sorry about yesterday.
I really liked Olivia, but you guys were her real friends, and I shouldn't have stepped in like that.
Yeah, I'm not gonna lie, it was a little weird.
I know you guys hate me after what happened.
I was just trying to do something nice, but I feel like I made everything worse.
We don't Okay, Candace is not in love with you, but that accident was a coincidence.
You can't blame yourself for that.
Thank you for saying that, Alex.
Look, I don't know if I should talk about this, but is McKenna okay? I was really worried about her at the funeral.
It looked like she was having a panic attack.
- Really? - Yeah, and I don't want to be pushy, but I know she lost her sister.
Has anything like that ever happened before? Yeah, um, she had a rough time after Jennie died.
We all did, but for McKenna She was the one who found Jennie after It It really messed her up.
She even dropped out of school for a bit.
Wow, I had no idea.
I'm really glad she had you guys, though.
Well, we tried to be there for her.
But after her dad bailed, it was tough.
She mentioned her sister had a heart attack.
How does that even happen to a 16-year-old? [ALEX.]
She had a bad heart.
It's It's a genetic thing.
McKenna has it, too.
You know what, I shouldn't have brought it up.
Just forget I said anything.
Yeah, I'm gonna, um, get some air.
[BOY.]
Hey.
- We need to talk.
- Not now.
Yes, now.
I'm losin' my shit, okay? My best friend died hating my guts, and I have to live with that.
You don't know that.
[OLIVIA, ON VOICE-MAIL.]
I hope making out with my boyfriend was worth it, because, bitch, you are dead to me! - You and I are completely - Jesus, Candace! [CRYING.]
Look, I know we messed up, okay? But you're my friend, Isaac, and I really need you right now.
Isaac, I miss you.
No, I can't.
- Isaac - Don't you get it? This is over.
We can't be together.
So so what? I'm I'm just nothing to you? Just leave me alone.
[ENGINE STARTS.]
I'm sorry, sweetie.
I was closing out the open house, and then this couple called, and they were begging me to stay longer.
It's okay.
Can we just go? Was it a rough day, being there without Olivia? You know, in eighth grade, people used to call me "the clearance rack Olivia Richmond.
" And when she found out, she made them stop.
I used to hate being in her shadow, but the part that made me feel worse was that she was such a good friend to me, and she never tried to make me feel bad.
And now she's dead.
So why do I feel like I'm still competing with her? Honey, listen to me.
Nothing you are feeling right now is wrong.
It doesn't feel that way.
You'll get through this.
I know it's hard, but even though Olivia is gone, it's okay for you to think about who you want to be.
Isn't that what your friend would want, for you to live your own life? [SIGHS.]
Thanks for the ride.
Yeah.
Hey, Mack? Is everything all right? Um, yeah.
Why? I just thought with everything going on How are you feeling? You're not having those panic attacks again? No.
No, I'm fine.
Can we just drop it? - Yeah.
Yeah.
- Thanks.
You know you don't have to hide anything from us, right? We're here for you.
And we don't want to lose you for two years again.
I know.
I don't want that, either.
It's just [SIGHS.]
I'm sorry I wasn't there for you when Jennie died.
I know that you guys were hurting, too, but every time I saw you guys, I just I saw Jennie's face.
You know, like she was supposed to be there, too.
Yeah.
[MCKENNA.]
But that's not gonna happen this time.
I'm gonna be there.
I promise.
Me, too.
[PHONE LINE RINGING.]
Willow Falls High School peer counseling hotline.
How can I help you? [BOY.]
Uh, hi.
Is this thing private? Of course.
Anything you say on this call is totally anonymous and confidential.
What's going on? I'm I'm freaking out, and I don't know what to do.
I probably shouldn't even be talking about this.
It's okay.
You don't have to tell me if you don't want to.
But if you do, I'm here to listen.
I'm a piece of shit.
I cheated on my girlfriend with her best friend.
I know it's terrible, but I didn't mean it to end up like Like what? She died.
[VIOLET.]
Hey, it's okay.
Just calm down and tell me all about it.
I'm Violet, by the way.
