Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman s01e14 Episode Script

Witness

Nice! Thanks.
Not your game, huh? I'm gonna go get another bucket.
Sorry.
I notice you're bending your left elbow.
Why don't you try keeping it straight? Thanks.
And be sure to get a good shoulder turn.
I appreciate this.
Don't be afraid to hit the ball.
The ball's not going to hit you back.
Got it.
How's that? Better.
How did you get this interview? He called me.
- What a coup.
- Vincent Winninger, the mad scientist? He's not mad, he's eccentric.
You're going to interview Vincent Winninger? Yes.
Well, that explains the vain attempt to look sexy.
Lois, be careful.
Vincent Winninger is a notorious Wolf.
Womanizer.
Maybe I should go with you.
Maybe you shouldn't.
Wait a minute.
Are you planning to exploit your femininity? To get the story of one of the strangest and most reclusive scientists of our time? You bet.
- Nice picture.
- You're late.
Power's has made you very impatient.
You should try to relax.
I'll relax when Winninger's no longer a problem.
He called me.
- He's threatening to talk to the media.
- Let him.
- Who's gonna believe that bag of wind? - He has proof.
I need you to get it back for me.
And I need you to see to it that he's in no condition to talk to anybody about anything.
You were lovers.
Are you sure? That was a long time ago, Edmund.
He's nothing but a memory now.
Getting dimmer every day.
This can't be worth it, can it? He could stop me from taking over the consortium.
If he does that we lose our business opportunity.
We're talking about billions of dollars here, Edmund.
Erase him.
Scientists, philosophers, historians, hippies.
Elemont Center, the intellectual commune.
Named after I don't remember who we named it after.
Do you? Whoever he was, you can bet he was obscure.
And these theatrical photos? The commune had a theater group.
- Isn't that Frank Sinatra? - No.
That's Sebastian Finn.
Mr.
Makeup, we called him.
He could make himself look like anyone.
His Bette Davis was remarkable.
- What happened to him? - I don't know.
He sort of disappeared.
His makeup was better than his acting.
- Is this - Yes.
Barbara Trevino.
She's come a long way.
From radical hippie to To Chairperson of the Rainforest Consortium.
Well, not until Tuesday.
And we're going to change all that.
We? Yes, you and me.
That's why you're here, Ms.
Lane.
Did you know that I spent several years living with an Amazonian tribe? The Life And Times of Vincent Winninger.
In this play, Barbara Trevino has a leading role.
She's the femme fatale.
You are a very good-looking woman.
Thank you.
How do you feel about increased male potency? What? Dr.
Winninger, I know that your reputation with women is only exceeded by your scientific one but I think we should keep this meeting purely professional.
Precisely.
What am I missing here? Barbara Trevino is going to sell all of us and the ozone layer straight down the river and destroy our chances for increased male potency.
I guess the '60s were pretty good to you.
Hear me out.
It will all become clear.
Would you like some iced tea? No, thank you.
I'm so sorry.
That's so - I'm terribly sorry - Really, it's fine.
I can get it myself.
I'm very sorry.
I'll be right back.
You're back early.
No.
No! Superman, where are you when I need you? I don't know.
It's like I can sense when someone's in trouble.
It goes beyond my super powers.
It's almost psychic.
Especially if it's someone that I know well or someone that I'm close to.
One at a time, please.
One at a time, please.
Superman, how far can you see really? Pretty far.
I can usually see when trouble's coming.
Maybe you could make a deal with 911.
Or maybe they could shine a light in the sky so you know when you're needed.
That's really stupid.
Don't any of you have some questions for our other guests? Yes.
Superman, do you have a girlfriend? - Operator.
- This is Lois Lane.
I want to report a murder.
"Only minutes before his death "Dr.
Winninger produced diaries which he claimed "contained evidence that would abort the impending induction "of Barbara Trevino into the Rainforest Consortium.
" Barbara Trevino's en route to Metropolis now.
She has a meeting at the Trade Center tomorrow.
- She doesn't want to write this.
- Why doesn't she want to? - Because I can't print it.
- You can't? No.
She doesn't have the diaries.
I may not have the diaries, but he told me what was in them.
And I do have this one notebook but it looks like Greek to me.
That's because it is Greek.
Jimmy, check it out.
Now, look, Lois.
A verbal statement is not worth the paper it's printed on.
You follow what I'm saying here? Without the diaries, you don't have anything to check out.
I hope one of the parts trimmed back is this where it says the killer took the diary.
- He did take them.
- You couldn't know unless you were there.
- I was there.
- But the killer doesn't know that unless you tell him.
I'm not telling him.
Not exactly.
Change this: "minutes before his death" to "later in the day".
Just to be on the safe side.
How about the part that says the man was dead? Can I keep that? Is that okay? - Where are you going? - I'm going back to Dr.
Winninger's house.
If I stay here any longer, I won't have any of my story left.
- I'll go with you.
- Clark, this is my story.
Forget about the story, Lois.
I just want to make sure you're okay.
I just spent five hours with the police and they didn't mention me needing a bodyguard.
And if I did need one, and I mean this in the nicest way you would not be my first choice.
Thank you.
I appreciate that.
He's right about one thing.
Until I get that diary translated, I don't have a story.
- Sorry.
- What're you doing? I'm going with you.
All right, who sent you? - Chill, dude.
- Who sent you? - Sent me to do what? - Clark, let him go.
How could anybody have sent him? My story's not out yet.
Yeah, her story's not even out yet.
What story? Jeez.
Later, dude.
Lay off the amino acids.
Come on.
Did I mention don't touch anything, Lois? - Moi? - Thank you.
Sergeant needs to see you.
Thank you, Doctor.
You got what you need? - Yeah.
- Come on, Doc.
I want to talk for a second.
- That's him.
- Who? That's the killer, Inspector.
Don't let him go.
- What? - The man that killed Dr.
Winninger.
I saw you.
I was in the powder room.
This is Dr.
Hubert, Dr.
Winninger's associate.
I don't care who he is.
I saw him kill Dr.
Winninger this morning.
I was in Washington, D.
C.
This morning.
Did anyone see you there? The 30 or 40 people who attended the National Science Council meeting and heard my presentation including the Vice President of the United States.
I'd call that an alibi, wouldn't you, Lois? Come on, Doctor.
Let's go.
So you made a mistake.
It happens.
I did not make a mistake.
He looked just like him.
I asked Jimmy to track down Dr.
Hubert, but he's disappeared without a trace.
Let's start over.
Why would somebody kill Winninger, and then go in the bathroom and clean up? Who knows? Maybe he wanted to wash the blood off his hands.
Or maybe he's compulsive about germs, like Howard Hughes.
- Here we are.
Thank you very much.
- We're not there yet.
When I walk a woman home, she gets door-to-door service.
Lois! - Clark.
- Stay down! That hurt.
You don't come sneaking up on somebody at a time like this! - Like what? - Somebody just tried to kill you! - Yes! You.
- No - What's in your hand? - What? - What're you hiding? - Nothing.
- Let me see the other hand.
- Nothing.
See? - Maybe I'd better stay with you tonight.
- Nice try, Kent.
Somebody just took a shot at you.
Clark, first of all, what you heard was a motorcycle backfiring.
And second, why would anybody want to kill me? Obviously the killer thinks that you can identify him.
I barely got a glimpse at him, and the man that I thought did it, didn't.
But the killer doesn't know that.
And third, the only danger to me out there was caused by guess who? Somebody who saved your life today? That was earlier.
Yes, but I did save it, you admit that.
Yes.
But you were wrong about somebody trying to kill me.
- You admit that.
- Yes.
But this time somebody was trying to kill you.
If you were wrong this afternoon - why should I believe you were right now? - Because I am.
So what you're saying is you saved my life twice today? Yes.
Do you know the odds against that? Who cares about the odds - Clark? - What? Goodbye.
Come on, Clark.
What am I doing? Now he's got me paranoid.
Would you like to come in? If I were you, I'd want to know what I was doing outside your window.
Just hanging around? You ran into Clark.
He told you I was in danger and I wouldn't let him bodyguard me.
Am I right? Yes.
So, Clark asked you to be my bodyguard? Why not just knock on the door? I thought it would be better if I stayed inconspicuous.
I'd change tailors if you're going to go for the undercover look.
Well, that's why you should let Clark keep you company.
Are you - staying for dinner? - No, thank you.
I have some errands to run.
But I'll come back.
Errands.
That's funny.
I never think of Superman having to run errands.
- I do have a life, you know.
- Really? - What kind of life? - Tonight, a neighborhood watch meeting - tomorrow, prison.
- That's cute.
I guess.
- I better be going.
You going to be okay? - Sure.
I'll be fine.
You'd better be careful.
If the killer reads between the lines of your story and realizes you were there - You read my work? - Always.
Let me get this.
- Lock your doors and windows.
- I promise.
He reads my work.
Okay, thanks.
I'll try back later.
- You're in awfully early.
- 24 hours.
Round the clock.
At your service, chief.
- Jimmy? - Yeah, chief? Don't suck up.
I don't like it.
Now, why are you here? Winninger's notebook.
It contains some kind of scientific formula.
Star Labs broke it down, but they don't know what its purpose is.
- Anything else? - A map which appears to be a large section of the Brazilian Rainforest.
Now, what would some formula and the Brazilian Rainforest have to do with Barbara Trevino? - I don't know.
- All right.
Give this info to Lois and tell her I said to get on it right away.
Right.
- And, Jimmy.
- Yeah? There's nothing wrong with a little sucking up.
Right.
Chief.
Better.
It's the Metro Radio Morning Show.
Ladies and gentlemen, king of the airwaves, Harold Stein! All right, very good, very good.
This is Harold Stein.
I am king of the airwaves and at my right is my Queen Rowena.
Rowena, today we're gonna talk to the FCC We got the FCC? Oh, no.
Lazy nincompoop.
I tell them, "Hey, go for it.
" But they don't listen.
What? Here it is.
Cost two times as much more! Mrs.
Truzinski? This is Lois Lane in 105.
You know already.
How long do you think that'll be? That long.
As soon as possible.
Thank you.
Mr.
Truzinski.
Your wife said it'd be a couple of hours.
Not that I'm complaining.
As you can see the water's not exactly working.
I've not been able to Mr.
Truzinski, are you all right? Let go! Let her go now.
Lois? Oh, God, Clark.
- Clark.
- It's all right.
I couldn't breathe.
- That nice Mr.
Truzinski - No, it wasn't him.
It must have been somebody else.
I saw the real Mr.
Truzinski leave.
He tried to kill me.
- I'll find him.
- No.
Please don't leave.
Okay, I won't.
I'm here, I'm right here.
- Lois, are you okay? - I'm fine.
- What're you doing here? - I work here.
I have a job to do.
Your job ain't gonna be worth the sweat flying off an Elvis imitator if you end up dead.
Can't you talk some sense into her? I'm hoarse from trying, chief.
Look, apparently, the killer can find me anywhere, and can look like anyone, so I'm probably safer around a lot of people I know.
I don't think you're gonna be safe until we can find this Mr.
I Can Make Myself Up To Look Like Anyone Else person.
Isn't that Frank Sinatra? No.
Mr.
Makeup, we called him.
He could make himself look like anyone.
Mr.
Makeup.
Jimmy! I want you to find me everything you can, especially the whereabouts, of a What was his name? Sebastian Finn! Who? Winninger, Finn, and Trevino were all in the same photo.
That's a connection.
Why would Finn kill Winninger? And what does any of this have to do with Barbara Trevino? That's what we're gonna find out.
Taxi! This is very creepy.
Taxi.
- Don't you think this is creepy? - Taxi! Finn could be anybody.
Anybody you see could be somebody else.
It's a global village now and we at the Rainforest Consortium have to act accordingly.
Dr.
Trevino.
How does it feel to be the first woman to hold this post? Well, I don't officially hold it for two days, but at the risk of being premature, it feels great! Dr.
Trevino.
Concerning the death of Dr.
Vincent Winninger Dr.
Winninger was a brilliant scientist and a very dear friend of mine for many years.
I was shocked and saddened by his death.
How do you feel about the ozone layer? What about increased male potency? - Who are you? - Lois Lane.
Daily Planet.
Well, Ms.
Lane I find your sense of humor odd, to say the least and totally inappropriate.
Ladies and gentlemen, I suggest that this might be a good time to conclude this press conference.
Thank you all very much for coming.
Well, that was bold, Lois.
Not very bright, but definitely very, very bold.
Did you see the look on her face? She knew exactly what I was talking about even if I didn't.
- Now we'll never get to her.
- Ms.
Lane? I am Dr.
Trevino's administrative assistant.
She wishes me to tell you that she will discuss whatever you like privately.
Well, I'm here with Mr.
Kent.
I'm sorry.
Just you, she said.
You understand.
She wants to talk woman-to-woman.
Sort of a sisterhood thing.
We understand completely.
But I'm still going with her.
Right this way.
This way, please.
Is this guy cool or what? Hey, if you can't stand the heat You gotta love that guy.
Superman had to run or fly.
I told him we'd wait for the police.
Sebastian Finn, I presume.
Why did you kill Dr.
Winninger? His Rosencrantz was atrocious.
So why come after me? - You could identify me.
- No, I couldn't.
Well, that's the way it goes sometimes.
How does Barbara Trevino fit into this? Maybe you'll talk to the police.
Not likely.
Superman may be the man of steel, but I have a will of iron.
I hate actors.
- Sebastian Finn.
- Winninger.
- Dr.
Hubert.
- You first.
According to the police Finn wasn't just moonlighting when he killed Winninger.
They think he's been a successful hit man for years.
I guess he finally made his ability to disguise himself as anyone pay off.
I can top that.
I spoke to the dean at the Philosophy Department at the Metropolis University.
He was a member of the Elemont Commune.
He knew Winninger, Finn, and Trevino way back then.
Apparently, it was a regular Peyton Place.
Winninger and Trevino used to be a couple.
But then he dumped her.
Why? He felt that she wasn't living up to the ideals that they all believed in.
But then, Finn and Trevino got together.
They eventually split, but they still keep in contact.
I can top that.
I found Dr.
Hubert, and he'll talk to us tomorrow.
That's great.
But we still don't know the connection between increased male potency the Rainforest, and Barbara Trevino.
The police questioned her.
She has an airtight alibi of course.
She was getting into her limo.
She claims to have no knowledge of the attempt on my life.
It would be really nice if I could talk to her myself.
Yeah.
Good luck on that one.
Back to work.
You ready to call it a night? Not quite.
I have a little more work to do.
I'll wait.
Clark, there's no need.
Finn's in jail.
I'll be fine.
- You sure? - Yes.
And don't be hanging around outside waiting for me.
I don't plan on seeing you till tomorrow.
- Okay.
Good night.
- Good night.
- Lois Lane.
- Hi, Lois.
Barbara Trevino here.
I missed you after the press conference.
No.
I believe it was I who missed you.
You want to tell me what this is all about? I think I'd like to tell you when I see you.
That should be soon.
Very soon.
- Hi, Clark.
- This is a surprise.
How about a smoothie? Lt'll only take a second.
No, I'm not thirsty.
Lois, what's wrong? I don't want you to take this the wrong way.
It's just that What? Well, I guess that would just feel a lot better if I could - Stay here tonight? - Yeah.
Okay.
You can drop the Kevin Costner protecting Whitney Houston bit.
We're in the Planet.
I think we're safe now.
I'm putting on extra security.
Nobody gets in or out of this building without special I.
D.
Well, excuse me for caring.
I love it that you care.
Hubert's waiting for you in Winninger's study.
He won't come here? He's afraid to come out after what happened with Winninger.
I assume you're coming with me? - I assumed I would go alone.
- It's still my story, Clark.
You are really high maintenance, you know that? But I'm worth it.
During the time Vincent spent in the Amazon one of the discoveries he made was a rare plant which, when correctly harvested and processed increased male potency.
So his prowess with the ladies wasn't all God-given.
- Correct.
- Better sex through science.
Why not? He also discovered vast mineral deposits beneath areas of the Rainforest which are currently protected by law.
How does Barbara Trevino fit into all of this? Barbara knew of Vincent's discoveries and research and tried to convince him they should be exploited for their commercial value.
- He turned her down cold.
- Wait a minute.
This is the background sheet they handed out on Trevino at the press conference.
Here we go.
Barbara Trevino is, among other things, on the board of directors of Hobbs Mining.
Extensive mining operations in protected areas of the Rainforest would constitute an ecological disaster.
Winninger knew that.
The plant he discovered was just one of the many potential treasures hidden deep in the Rainforest waiting to be discovered for the eventual good of all mankind.
He devoted his life to preserving that resource.
Anything on Hobbs Mining? They're being pretty closed-mouthed.
What Ben Bradlee used to call "non-denial denials.
" - You gonna be okay? - Sure.
Got my protector over there.
Oh, brother.
Well, you be careful, you hear? - Good night.
- Good night.
I suppose it would be foolish to ask if you're ready to go.
- Not just yet.
I have - A little more work to do.
I want you to promise me that you won't leave before I get back.
- Where are you going? - To look for Barbara Trevino.
You think you can find a woman everyone else is looking for - and no one can find? - I have my ways.
Do you promise that you won't leave? - Do you want it in blood? - Okay.
Good.
But I also don't want you here alone.
I'll stick around.
Really.
I don't mind.
Okay.
What? I'll be back to pick you up in a little while.
- Stay.
- Go! Jimmy.
- How about a cup of coffee? - Sure.
I'd love one.
I'll be right back.
You scared me.
Are you looking for something? I found it.
Now tell me where the notebook is.
I don't know what you're talking about.
I knew Winninger was about to expose my true motivation in wanting to be appointed chairperson of the Rainforest Consortium.
Because from there it would be easy for me to grant Hobbs the exclusive strip mining licenses they needed to exploit the area.
So I called on our old friend Finn to eliminate him.
But Finn left a loose end.
- Me.
- And the notebook.
- Now, where is it? - There's nothing in that notebook but Winninger's processing formula for the male potency plant.
Well, then I guess I went to a lot of trouble for nothing, didn't I? But with the strip mining proceeding as we speak, and with you eliminated Jimmy! Fancy bumping into you here, Ms.
Trevino.
Cutting it a little close there, aren't you, big fella? - Are you all right? - I am.
But Hobbs Mining is about to start clear-cutting thousands of acres of Brazilian Rainforest.
Thanks, Jimmy.
Big story, huh? You must've been terrified.
It was a little scary.
You wanna talk scary? I covered the Governor's wife's speech today at the Museum Volunteers' luncheon.
Her dress, that was scary.
Hey, but you can tell me.
You were really scared, right? - Like I said, a little.
- A lot.
- Little.
- Lot! Why is it so important to you that I admit how scared I was? It just makes you more human, all right? Okay.
I write as well as you do.
I'm vastly more fun at parties but you are the star here.
Chief's little favorite.
In on all the action.
And when you get in trouble, look who's hanging around to come to the rescue.
Not only a cute guy, but also a god in a cape.
- But l - No.
You asked.
I'm answering.
Lois.
You have something the rest of us just don't have, all right? So it would be nice for just once that you could admit that you have bad days, and problems and fears just like the rest of us.
Cat? I was a lot scared.
Superman got there on time.
All mining operations have been suspended and the authorities are cleaning house at the Rainforest Consortium.
- Guess everything's back to normal.
- Sorry I took so long.
Anything happen while I was gone? Not a thing.
Come on.
Where are we going? I thought you might want to walk me home.
I thought you didn't need a bodyguard.
Who said anything about a bodyguard?
