Low Winter Sun s01e05 Episode Script

Cake On The Way

1 - Michael: It only takes one hand to wipe.
- Steven: One hand to jerk off.
Michael: One hand to get to third base with a girl.
That's all you do anyway, Gus.
Steven: Wipe, jerk, third we missing anything? Michael: If it's a choice, I think I'll stick with two hands.
I mean, two beats one.
Wasn't there a pitcher for Anaheim that threw a no-hitter with one hand? Yeah, but it looked weird.
A little knob holding his mitt.
( laughs ) Gus: Doc says I gotta re-wrap this five times a day for the next two weeks.
Damn infection if I wipe my ass wrong.
( laughs ) Gus: Man, y'all can suck it.
- I only suck guys with two hands.
- Me too.
Yeah, something about a one-handed man's penis it just really kills the mood.
( group laughs ) At least I didn't get bitch slapped in front of everybody.
At least I can take a shit without dying.
Besides, we made five grand last night.
The Old Man can choke it.
- Jamie, what's up? - Damon and the chicken boys.
- That's right, back for more.
- Well, more I got.
Damon: Well, big fight Friday night.
So, same as last time, except double it.
Double? Yeah, and you know what? Throw in two of them back there.
Butcher: Yeah, well, you know, I gotta see what I got, but I think I got it.
- Thanks, boss.
- No problem.
I'll be back later to pick everything up.
Yo, I don't think blacks can eat pork, man.
You're an idiot.
What about the guys with the bow ties and pies? Can't eat it.
- They're Muslim.
- ( Damon laughs ) See, all I'm saying is I don't wanna be the one running back for more food later.
Let me get one of the menus.
- What do you think, Nick? - We'll check bow ties at the door.
- ( laughs ) - Gus: Y'all know I'm right.
I'm gonna go take a piss.
Dream about it.
I'm gonna go call my girl.
Tell Gus' mom I said what's up.
The Old Man looked old, man.
Stared his ass straight back to Greek Town.
Waitress: You three or five? Damon: There'll be five of us.
So, let's get four pancakes, some eggs, toast for the table.
Oh, let me get a Louie's Mistake to go when we're done.
- What do you want? - Oatmeal.
It was a great night, huh? ( saxophone squawking ) Yo, Mouse, practice is over, buddy.
Hey, good morning.
( groans ) Brought my wife her favorite breakfast.
Oh, you smell like a birdcage.
( both chuckle ) What are you, nine? Geddes: He is not ready.
He's not ready, and he is going to melt under the TV lights.
What you don't know about boxing can fill Lake St.
Clair.
How you gonna take on a wily vet that's had 50-something fights when you've only had 15? Malone's flat-footed and dumb.
Trey's had 16 fights.
16-0.
English, gentlemen.
Trey Jackson, Frank's retirement investment.
Yours too.
Yeah, he's got half the department chipped in for a piece of him.
Kahlil: Can you buy a person? No, but you can give a little seed money.
You can't train if you're hauling bags out at the airport.
Who owns Brendan's piece now? Dani can have him.
Dani will pass.
Doe-eye's sticking with the IRA.
Real estate.
It was here.
It's where Billy dropped.
You know, you should come to the fight.
See it up close.
You might like it.
A little blood a little brew.
Fine-ass women in between the rounds.
Because who doesn't like fine-ass women in between rounds? Geddes: Frank Looks like we found Brendan's murder site.
( "Hustlin'" plays ) I ain't no quitter I'm in for a pound Ain't nobody Gonna hold me down Hustlin' in the Motor City Hustlin', just tryin' to get down Down, down, down.
( helicopter blades whirring ) Where was that last week? Don't get righteous.
Looks like DPD sprung a leak.
I see no shame spreading the word on good police work.
Well, thank Dani.
What the hell's he here for? Invited in the interest of departmental cooperation.
- Geddes: Let me just stick my shoe-- - Swallow it.
Gentlemen.
Detective Kahlil.
What brings all these eyes to such a dark corner? - Stumpy has ties to her vic, Billy Hobson.
- Stumpy? Anton Bobek.
Hobson was killed here a few hours after McCann's car went into the river.
And we're thinking maybe McCann and Stumpy, popped right here.
Sounds like there's been significant movement.
Exhausting all options.
Evidence will tell us more.
It always does.
Fingers and toes crossed, everyone.
Mayor's office gonna have a hard-on for this.
"A possible five days.
" Cook: Do you know how much shit I can get done in five days and still have time to get my legs waxed? Don't give me this BS about five days.
The Lord made birds and sea creatures in five days.
You folks making birds and sea creatures? Five days is estimate, ma'am.
The cases go as the evidence presents.
If you don't get me something I can go to the press with by tomorrow, your black ass is doing patrol in Flint.
How you like that estimate? ( phone clicks, dial tone hums ) God, I hate that woman.
So? So, we could hit Hamtramck, look for Billy's Middle Eastern pal.
Darryl Singers.
Yeah, I talked to him the other day.
He knew Billy.
Geddes: You mind if I pay him a visit? Something I didn't do? Geddes: Just might need a little old school love.
Trey, Trey, Trey.
Yeah.
Dawson: Hey! - How you doing, sir? - Dawson: Yes, sir.
Mr.
Agnew.
Dawson: On behalf of the entire division, we all got together and got you a little something, son.
( clapping ) Damn, damn, this is dope.
Dawson: Try it on.
Let's get a picture of him and the robe.
- Dawson: Oh, yeah.
- Gimme that.
Perfect fit.
What'd I tell you? - Look at that.
- Perfect.
Champ.
Come on in.
- We in? - Okay, here.
( police siren wails ) Preacher: "But ye shall receive power, after that, the Holy Ghost is come upon you.
And ye shall be witnesses unto Me, both in Jerusalem--" "Both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea.
And in Samaria, and to the uttermost part of the Earth.
And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
" ( lighter clicks ) You know why I'm here? I do.
But I'm gonna tell you, like I told that fine-ass Chaldean, Billy had tiny ears, a big head, smoked menthols.
Don't know much else.
'Cause you out of the game, right? Amen.
Come on, D, don't insult me.
I heard about your brother.
Got himself sent to Jackson copping from an undercover.
Kid plays ball.
Bitch-ass cops could have let him slide.
Maybe I can help on that.
Still got friends in Vice.
Give me the real on Billy and Anton.
They slanged together.
They work the trap on Van Dyke? Sitting on some major weight out that spot.
Who fronting? Anton brings it in from the Greeks, Billy deals it around here.
Billy was getting tired of being the middle man.
You feel me? So this could have been a deal gone wrong? That much white? Only a matter of time before somebody took a shot at it.
Inside or out.
( rock music plays faintly ) How you doing, May? It's not a good time, Sean.
No, I know.
I know.
Never is.
Never a good time.
Maya: You can't come around here.
All right.
I got a gift.
I'm gonna drop it off and then I'm gonna go.
It's for the kids.
You know I don't see them.
Pinwheels.
You all right, Maya? Who are you? I'm fine.
Well, well.
If it isn't the cop who cops.
Michael: Bigger fish, Damon.
Hey, Sean, how are you? Okay.
Uh-huh.
What you got there? How about you let me and May have a minute? Who's May? That's Maya.
Go outside, Sean.
Now I know that I've said this before.
Can you please tell me again 'cause you've got such a soothing voice? This is my bar.
It's her bar.
Say that to me again.
Michael: Damon.
We don't fix up losers.
And we especially don't fix up loser ex-cop lowlife when you ain't brushed your teeth since 2004, man.
I call her May.
Yeah, uh-huh.
( grunts ) I got him, I got him.
Pinwheels? Next time bring child support.
Why? I don't know.
You know, I was in the neighborhood.
It's a great guy you got there.
You need to call first.
Or maybe not come by.
Or maybe not come by.
Where are you staying? Uh-huh.
I got a three-bedroom in Oak Park.
In-ground pool and bitches in the hot tub.
You should come by some time.
You can bring the asshole.
We'll all barbecue.
That ain't why I came by.
So how you doing? I'm good.
You look pretty.
Something different with your hair? ( faintly ) No.
Uh-huh.
Yeah, that's ( thumps ) Anything? More looks of confusion.
Can't say I blame them.
This whole thing seems a bit off, right? Why you say that? Billy works with a Muhammad in this town? I thought you quit.
I did.
It's a "loosie.
" Give me that.
Don't tell my dad.
Your dad okay with you being a cop? My dad likes that I have a position of power in this country.
My mom hates that I carry a gun.
Which is why you're always nose-deep in the LSAT books, huh? My mom wanted a doctor or a lawyer.
Meeting her halfway.
Your parents? Never met them.
So you really think Billy killed McCann and then this whoever nondescript Middle Eastern killed Billy? It's a lead.
We follow leads.
All right.
But accusing this community of having a cop killer we better be right.
Okay, LSAT, give me a second.
I know where we can go.
Maya: You talk to Damon? He's all right.
He left with Nick.
Doesn't like seeing Sean around.
Well, he's got bigger problems.
Skelos walking into the blind pig is something to worry about.
Michael: He's made a lot of moves.
He's stressed.
Yeah, you think I don't know that? And he's on top of it.
What's he worrying about? Sean? He's got the bar.
He's got me, he won.
So you're a prize, is that it? You don't know that? You look worse than the last time.
Yep.
My cousin, Cole, he has a sober living spot in Kalamazoo.
Just saying.
Everything in my files you've seen.
Again, I don't think so.
Trust, Detective.
If we don't have that, we have nothing.
Look, I've got a presentation with the mayor tomorrow.
It's in our best interest if we work together.
- I heard about that.
I look forward to being there.
- Billy Hobson.
Mr.
Hobson was always background decoration, never a focus.
Well, if Anton Bobek was an IA informant, then why wasn't Detective McCann trailed on a possible drug deal? Because my case encompassed everything from arrest records to clearance rates.
Drugs were a lower priority.
But good instincts, Detective.
Should serve you well on your journey to the FBI.
He knows everything.
He's got a key to your apartment.
He's got his own satellite.
Knows it all.
Lets it dribble out when he's bored.
Hm, "The Dribbler.
" I like that.
( shredder whirrs ) ( whirring continues ) My door continues to be open, Detectives.
Two 60-inch TVs.
Won't be a spot in here without either the fight or a girl in your face.
Poppa T: Need any extra weight on our end? Cause we got lookouts on Jefferson, Grand River, Mack.
I can pull 'em in.
No, just keep it tight on the doors and the parking.
What about Skelos? Who you got watching him? 'Cause he was watching us.
Poppa T: You sweating that, little mama? Ain't gonna be a dude up in here ain't got one on him.
Found out as much the other night.
Trust me, he ain't-- won't, gonna try dick.
Instead of assuming, why don't we put one of those lookouts on him? If that'll help you sleep easier, little mama done.
I got you.
Poppa T: Yo, give me eyes on Skelos.
( knocks on door ) Sean: Frank.
Hey, Frank.
Ladies and gentlemen, it's Frank Agnew, Detroit's very own super cop.
Get in here.
What the hell, Sean? What the hell, Frank? Oh.
Yeah, I like what you've done with the place.
How high are you? Well, you know, about that high.
I know you.
I've known you.
That's weird word, "known.
" Known.
Makes your mouth feel funny.
Agnew: What the hell are you doing here? You know you shouldn't bring the job home, brother, that's why I got out.
You were thrown out, Sean.
You're right.
I was.
Can't get nothing past you.
But the burden, man.
You know, they, like, they get inside you.
They rewire you.
And then, I don't know, words like "known," they come out of your mouth all wrong.
And then your ex stares at you.
And it's just like he's staring at me right now.
Am I interrupting? Joe.
Geddes.
( laughs ) Oh, what a day.
You know, I read about Brendan.
They mentioned Frank.
They don't mention you.
I could be of some help here.
Yeah.
That's our bat-signal.
Yeah.
True friend, Frank.
Joe.
( door closes ) Didn't know you two kept in touch.
We don't.
Okay McCann and Stumpy were killed at the trap house by Billy Hobson.
Billy Hobson was killed by "Muhammad Abdul-Osama," whatever.
We got 12 hours till we see the mayor.
Well, let's get to work.
9:00, 9:00, 9:00.
9:05.
Nine-zero-five.
Brendan, Anton Billy, "Osama.
" We need to put Billy in the trap house on the waterfront.
- Yeah? - Mm Billy smoked menthols.
Trap house.
And Billy smoked menthols, river.
No, come on.
Half the city smokes menthols.
That's too weak.
Circumstantial.
Well, thank God it's Detroit.
And look, it's only nine-zero-seven.
Free men by midnight.
Geddes: Free Press should die ashamed this story is still holding.
You know what? Kiss the Free Press's ass it is.
Reason, Brendon is undercover.
He's role-playing the buyer.
Drives his, alls-I-got-is-this doughy-three-inches CTSV up to the trap house.
He gets out, he waddles inside-- - No, he picks up Anton first.
- At the Raven.
Not the Raven.
The Raven gets us in trouble.
Okay, my bad.
Blame the bourbon.
So, they meet, wherever.
Yeah.
Wherever, we need to figure that out.
Ah, then they, what did you say, waddle up? Fat men roll in twos.
Okay, they knock Billy lets them in.
They go inside.
They meet "Osama-Muhammad however-what-are-ya"-- Mm-hmm The drugs come out.
Cash is about to be exchanged.
Brendan flashes his badge.
He orders everyone on the floor.
He calls for backup.
And then something something McCann's jumped by Billy and Osama.
They drag him to the sink, water in the lungs, lights out.
What about Stumpy? Stumpy makes a break for the door, Billy pops him, back of the head.
Then we're gonna need undercover request forms, Brendan's signature, Vice signatures-- Uh-uh.
We're not at the forgery stage yet.
Hey, Frank.
You killed a man.
You really gonna sweat over a forgery? We use what we got.
We try Brendan just stumbling up on the place - and Stumpy waiting for him? - ( trickling ) About an hour and a half ago.
I'm worried about Dani.
What? - Dani.
- ( flushing ) You need to shout to the Lord, you want to compete with my stream.
Dani's gonna be all over the logic of this.
I'm worried.
Worry about Boyd, you want to worry.
That man ain't never letting up.
What you doing for Trey, stepping up like that good on you, man.
I never had the help when I was young.
He's a good kid.
My pops was a fighter, you know? Yeah? Amateur crap.
Local circuit.
Least, that's what my mom says.
I used to tell my friends that he sparred with Sugar Ray Robinson.
Huh.
Lies.
We're drowning, we're drowning, we're drowning.
Whole damn city's out there watching us die.
You're over there looking out for some damn lint! It helps me focus.
Fu-- do you not see, Frank? Do you not see the sun creeping up in the sky? Geddes: Man, you rode that high horse.
You did.
You rode it as long as you could.
Working this case so it goes cold.
But you can not still be stressing about pinning this on somebody else! Hey! I've worked Homicide.
Whoever shot Billy is a killer.
I have no problem taking down killers.
Do you understand me? Okay.
You know what? We're trying to force a square piece of crap down a round toilet.
Brendan as hero? Uh-uh.
City Hall has got that wrong.
Brendan's a cancer.
Okay.
Yeah.
Let's do that.
Agnew: They drive back from the river, return to the trap to split up the drugs.
The accomplice kills Billy.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Last slice.
( chuckles ) Tastes like a foot.
Come on, Frank.
One last time.
Agnew: After carefully interpreting the evidence, we believe it's possible that both Brendan McCann and Anton Bobek, were killed inside the trap house by Billy Hobson and an accomplice.
We believe that that accomplice then murdered him.
Evidence sites a rift between Billy and Anton over drug sales and we believe Billy and his accomplice lured Anton to the house with the express intention of killing him.
How does Detective McCann fit into all this? With Anton's links to IA it's possible he made a call to McCann to further incriminate him.
We believe this call was made around 4:00 AM and McCann on the surveillance video confirms that.
Records of McCann don't show any calls.
McCann was probably using prepays.
You told me that yourself.
And the Eastern European prostitute who lured Anton out of the bar, what's her involvement in this? TOD on Anton was undetermined, so the only person hanging onto this idea of some whore that'll be you.
- Cut the dick measuring, Detective.
- Ma'am.
Agnew: After dumping the bodies at the river, Billy and his accomplice return to the trap house in order to split up the drugs.
We believe the accomplice then killed Billy.
Lieutenant Dawson, whose idea was it to sell McCann as a hero cop? I'm just a humble servant taking orders from higher paychecks.
So the interim commissioner.
That dumbass.
What you're suggesting about Detective McCann, you understand the implication? Yes, ma'am.
McCann was what he was.
There's nothing we can do or say that's gonna change that.
But I believe if we find his killer, we solve all three homicides.
We had a witness, right? Said he saw two people.
Did he recognize Billy? Yes, ma'am.
Mayor: "Homicide.
" Excuse me? He gonna win tonight? I think so, Mr.
Mayor.
Good.
If you think Hobson is our killer, we'll go to the press with it.
Okay.
Thank you, ma'am.
( huffing ) ( ring announcer speaking ) ( claps ) ( mutters ) your night.
Show him how we do it.
Ring announcer: and zero losses, he's the Motor City's magnificent Trey Jackson! ( crowd cheering ) ( crowd cheering ) Agnew: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Trainer: Stay off the ropes! Get out of there, Trey.
Turn him.
Turn him.
That's it.
Boy ain't playing.
Now he's on the bus.
Referee: Time out.
You were right Hit 'em! Again! Come on, Trey! You were right, O god of pugilism.
Never doubt me.
TV commentator: There he is with a flurry of jabs, he's got him up against the ropes What's up, brother? Cake on the way? Yeah, I just made the call.
A'ight.
Make sure to holler at me when it gets here.
All right.
( bell clangs ) Hang in there.
Breathe.
Breathe.
One more.
That guard he got, that ain't nothing.
You can work that shit all night.
That's free money.
You hear me? ( chuckles ) Okay.
It's a date.
- I thought you had a lady.
- I don't have one in Midtown.
You know Frank, I can't believe that we're saying two people killed McCann and Anton.
I mean, the person that had the most to lose from Anton was McCann.
- You've gotta be kidding me.
- What? You wanna be a better detective? When you're off the job, you're off the job.
Geddes: Come on, Trey.
Kick his ass, man.
TV commentator: might be the difference we see here because Malone is not known as a strong endurance fighter.
Commentator #2: Yeah, "Shotgun" definitely is running out of ammunition right now As-salaam alaykum.
( laughs ) What up? Looking good, little mama.
Commentator: Hitting him with a series of uppercuts Burning through that much? Commentator: And there he is-- one, two, three ( crowd cheering ) Oh, come on! That's a deliberate head butt, ref! - That's a DQ.
- Dani: Come on, let's go.
Oh, oh, oh! Trey! How can you be so calm? They gotta stop it.
He's gotta do something.
He'll do something.
Watch.
He's never been cut.
( crowd cheering ) Finish it, baby.
Finish it.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Get him.
Yeah.
Yeah! Yeah! - He's out! - ( bell ringing ) Get in here! Get him out! Get him out! - Whoa, boy.
- "Homicide"! - My man! - "Homicide"! What am I, some delivery bitch? You wanna flirt with "Big Chocolate"? Giggle when he comes around, huh? Do what you want.
Poppa T? You're serious? And your ex.
Strolling into my bar-- my bar.
Oh, it's Sean, then? I was having a good day, all right? And I gotta sit there, and I gotta talk to him? Like I really give a damn if he jumps off the Ambassador Bridge.
You're a mental patient.
Not to mention Skelos, rolling his ass up in here.
See this? This is his coke that I'm banging.
That is his coke that I shot somebody for.
And you, you think it's so easy the whole-- What is wrong with you? I didn't mean that.
I didn't mean it.
You got a problem? I'm your wife.
You talk it out.
I am talking.
Don't hit me.
You rolling, right? First two's on me.
- Raincheck.
- Aw, come on, Frank.
- Sorry.
- My wife gave me a hall pass.
She knows Joe is gonna be there? Hey, you know we pull this off, we sell our testimony coming up in the Lady Belle case, be the best week of our lives, Frank.
They will pin a medal on you.
Feeling good, are we? Good night.
Dani: Good night.
Look at that.
The "let's stand 10 feet away from each other" walk.
Aw, man, don't even.
I got enough on my mind.
Must be tough.
Everyone always wanting your approval.
Yeah, well, you know how it is.
You learn to live with it.
I have to admit, that wasn't half bad.
Yeah? Getting in touch with your inner Roman? Maybe.
- Want to do a Vegas fight? - If you're paying.
Thanks for tonight.
My pleasure.
Oh, God, I didn't - It's okay.
- Sorry.
- Thanks again.
- Sure.
( car engine starts ) ( sighs ) ( music playing ) You ain't gotta keep coming in here.
You want my phone number, just ask.
Maybe some other time.
Would you mind sending a drink down to the woman at the end of the bar? Diamond, right? Hmm.
- ( crashes ) - Poppa T: Everybody out now.
Move.
- Damon: What was that? - ( woman screams ) What was that? ( Poppa T yelling ) Hey! Hey what the hell is going on, man? Hey.
What's happened? Hey man, we gotta get everybody outta here.
It's a damn roll-by.
- Wait, what? - Hey, hit the lights, yo.
I don't see any cops.
Damon: Mike, you see anything? Nothing.
( guns clicking ) Straps on the bar.
( grunts ) Get up.
Get up.
Pick it up.
Slowly.
Put it on the bar.
Let's go.
Let's go.
Hurry up.
Mm-mmh.
- Maya, you okay? - I'm fine.
T, you wanna do this, really? Bodies against the wall.
No, not you.
You, come with me.
T, come on.
Whatever this is, man, we can make it work, all right? Clowns always want to negotiate when it's too late.
You shouldn't have lied about who you're with.
Shoulda come clean about Skelos.
That business come down on us, not you.
Don't matter much now, huh? Get upstairs.
Run it.
Everything.
( keypad beeps ) Damon: This ain't right, man.
We're all making enough money here.
Rev say you don't come correct.
You still owe your taxes.
You lucky that this all I'm taking.
( chuckles ) Yeah.
This was fun.
- ( gunfire pops ) - Get down! Get down! You okay, babe? You all right? I'm okay.
I'm all right.
All right.
You guys all right? You guys okay? - Everybody okay? - Maya: Babe Michael?! No, no, no, no.
Hey, somebody help me.
Somebody help me.
Come on.
Let's go.
- Who's got my keys? - I got 'em.
Come on.
Get me to the hospital, please.
We're going, we're going.
It's okay.
It's okay.
( Michael screaming ) Oh, God! Shh.
Shh.
Shh.
Get him in, quick.
Be quick, be quick.
You're gonna be all right.
You're gonna be all right.
No, no, no.
Listen, toss the guns.
Make sure that place is cleaned out.
Go, now.
( engine starts ) ( mouse clicking ) ( clicking ) ( groaning ) Let me see it.
Let me see it.
( yelps ) We can't stop the bleeding.
Call my brother.
Meet us in the ER, yeah? Please, call my brother.
( Michael groans ) Can you open a window? - I want to feel the air.
- Damon: Okay.
I got it.
Okay? Michael: The wind feels good.
The wind feels good.
The wind feels good.
I I had I had a dog when I was He'd hang his head.
He'd hang his head out of the window, and Are we close, Damon? Yeah.
We're close.
( gurgling ) ( Michael grunting ) ( brakes squeal softly ) Please Please, Damon.
Go home and you can drop me off in the parking lot.
We can still make it.
Maya? Maya, tell him, huh? ( grunts ) Look at me-- damn it, look at me! Look, M! I wouldn't have said anything.
I wouldn't have said anything.
( groans ) ( engine stops ) ( distant barking )
