Macgyver s02e07 Episode Script

The Road Not Taken

We just crossed the border.
The pilot said we just left Thailand.
He's not a happy guy.
I don't blame him.
The situation is worse than when we left home, Mac.
This new regime has started to eliminate disruptive elements, and the orphanage is sitting right in the middle of the worst of it.
They won't be safe until we get them out.
I know seeing Debra again isn't going to be easy for you.
Yeah, it's been a while.
- How about you and Sister Margaret? - Last time I saw Margaret, she was being chased across the Sahara with 1 5 children and a goat.
Sister Margaret.
Sister Margaret.
Soldiers coming for you and Debra.
Chanthara's men, they come for you.
I saw them on the road.
Take the children.
You must go now.
Children, come with me.
Hurry.
- Debra, get the children together.
- This way, come on.
Quickly, we're going inside now.
I can't get any closer to the orphanage.
They have patrols around.
They'll hear the chopper.
Pick us up at the clearing half a mile east of the orphanage in two hours.
- Debra, hurry.
- Coming, Sister.
This way.
Hurry up.
Follow her.
Here we go.
All right, there we go.
- Thank you.
- Up you go.
Mac, I have just one question about rappelling: What do you do if the line breaks? You fall.
Watch your step.
Now, hold on tight, but hurry.
Don't be frightened.
Keep moving.
Here, I've got you.
Now, wait for me in the tunnel.
Be careful.
Kahn, it's your turn.
No, Sister.
I will stay here and talk to the soldiers until you get away.
Kahn, you've been like family to us.
You know what that means to Chanthara.
What can he do to me? I'm old.
We must make sure the children are safe.
God bless you.
Not rushing you, am l? Listen, I may get there slower, Mac, but I get there.
Did I ever tell you the--? Pete, let's go! - Everybody out! - Let's go.
- Where are the American women? - Gone.
Across the border.
I admire your loyalty, but I know they're here.
They have spread lies about our government.
You have no respect.
Sister Margaret is a woman of God.
Our people are oppressed.
You sin against the Saviour if you-- Look inside.
Search the area.
I've always liked being close to nature.
Yeah, me too.
All right, children, I want each one of you to take a blanket now.
We'll stay here until we're safe.
Sister, we have to get to the border.
- We'll wait until tonight.
- No, we have to go now.
It's too dangerous for them.
What if Chanthara's men are out there? What if they find the tunnel? - Stay with them.
- No.
I'll go find us a way across.
Don't worry.
I was a sprinter in high school.
I'll be back in a flash.
You're cold.
Here.
Yes.
You doing all right? The orphanage has gotta be this way.
Can't be more than a couple hundred-- Pete.
You're kneeling on my hand.
- Debra.
- MacGyver.
Oh, God.
I don't believe it.
What are you doing here? We'll explain later.
Where is Sister Margaret? Back at the cave.
This way.
MacGyver, by the time you read this, I'll be gone.
Please understand that leaving you was the hardest decision I ever had to make.
But it was one that had to be made.
I'll always remember you.
And I'll always love the memory of what we had together.
Debra.
Aren't you just a little hungry? Here, now just a little bit.
Oh, come on.
That's a good girl.
Want a little more? Sister Margaret? Peter.
Peter Thornton.
Well, you always said I had a standing invitation.
Oh, thank God you're here.
Hello, Maggie.
You look wonderful.
You're not looking so bad yourself.
Hey, listen, I'm sorry about that tackle out there.
The second time I've fallen for you.
Your hair's longer than it used to be.
Yours is shorter.
I like it.
Yeah? Well, this is like old times.
Getting you out of trouble.
We've got a chopper coming in about an hour, but until then, we should stay where we are.
You know, you've got some very unfriendly people out there.
- Where does this tunnel go? - Back to the orphanage.
There's a secret entrance.
Yeah, well, secrets have a funny way of getting out.
Excuse me.
Hi, how you doing? Like to make a little deal with you.
A little trade, actually.
You give me that ball, and I'll get you a brand-new one.
But you're gonna have to trust me.
I'm gonna have to owe you.
What do you say? Yeah? Good man, good man.
Now, I'm gonna need some empty cans, some fuel, a noisemaker and some form of grease.
Animal fat will do.
Open that, will you, Pete? - What's he doing? - I haven't got a clue but I'm used to it.
Still doing it, huh? Making things out of thin air? What is it this time? I'm gonna use the string in this ball as part of our alarm system and a fuse.
A fuse? We don't have any explosive.
But the guys out there don't know that.
And what they don't know can only help us.
But they are women, and only two of them.
They are Americans.
And they're on the death list.
If we lose such a prize, provincial headquarters will have us both shot.
No sign of them? They haven't been seen on the border roads.
They wouldn't risk the children's lives by going through the jungle.
They must be here.
A lot of people use electronic sensors to let them know if they're about to have uninvited guests.
But there are other ways to do it.
I remember tying a piece of string between two tin cans.
The idea was if someone talked into the can at one end, I could hear what was being said at the other.
I was kind of hoping to do the same thing here sort of.
I guess you could call it simple communication.
If anybody came through this door, I wanted to get the message loud and clear on the other end.
Which is more than I ever got playing Telephone.
- Here you go, Mac.
- Oh, thanks, Pete.
The animal fat in the meat and some kerosene is gonna make a great fuse.
Yeah.
So why'd these guys come after you? What set them off? The other day, Sister Margaret saved one of the villagers from being beaten to death by Chanthara's soldiers.
She covered the man with her body.
And they stopped.
I guess that did it, they decided to move against her.
But we heard you were both on their hit list.
Well, you know me.
I've never been one to sit on the sidelines.
Yeah.
If that moves, we move.
That's it.
Let's get everybody out to the clearing.
- All right.
Children, come quickly.
- Come here.
Come on.
A bomb! Look out! Clever.
Come on.
This way.
Hold on! Look out! Debra! Take off, Pete! Mac! - Bulgaria! - Yes! - Let's move.
Are you all right? - Yeah.
The man and woman.
Get them.
Kill them! Pete said "Bulgaria.
" What did he mean? That's an arrangement we've got.
He'll be back in the clearing in eight hours.
If we miss him then, it'll be 1 6 hours after that, and so on.
You mean, we've gotta get back to that clearing at 6:00? That's the idea.
- But Chanthara's got it blocked off.
- Yeah, that's the problem.
Is this thing gonna get us to the refugee station? - It's ten miles from the border.
- We took a hit.
Oil pressure's down near zero.
Sister, if you got a direct line upstairs, put in a call.
All right, hold it.
Now, step backwards into the creek using the same footprints.
Go ahead.
- What are we doing? - An old Apache lndian trick.
Can't track anyone through water.
Think it'll work? Well, it should.
Unless they've seen a lot of Westerns.
Come on.
There's the refugee camp.
We're gonna make it.
Thank God.
I got no feeling in my leg.
Can't work the pedals.
And there's a torque in the tail rudder.
What does that mean? There's no way to control the landing.
She's liable to hit the ground wherever she wants.
Coming in! Sister, hold on to those kids! Hang on! We need a doctor, a medic! Hurry, come on.
- Here we go.
- Take cover behind the building! Everybody out! She could blow any second.
Come on.
Here we go.
Peter! Peter.
Oh, it could have exploded.
Yeah, I know, Maggie, but we need the chopper.
Without it, we can't get back to Mac and Debbie.
Are you all right? Well, our pilot was hit.
He went off with the medic.
Oh, you must be Mr.
Thornton.
I am Gilbert Arnaud.
Your foundation told us to expect you.
Unofficially, of course.
What's a Frenchman doing running a refugee station out here? I am a refugee myself, of the old colonial days.
I will check on your pilot.
And I will be with the children.
- You know, this is all your fault.
- What are you talking about? You're the one who put me in touch with Sister Margaret.
Your letter caught up with me in Kenya, at that game preserve where I was working.
Now, wait a minute.
Pete said Margaret needed help in the orphanage, and I thought the two of you would hit it off.
But I didn't think you'd stay.
Wait.
Our footprints are shallow.
Theirs are deeper.
As if they step in them twice.
They never crossed this creek.
Move.
Go, go, go.
Your pilot's leg wound is minor.
He will be fine.
Listen, we left two people behind when we evacuated back there.
I've gotta return for them by 6:00.
Have you got anybody here who can fix this chopper in four hours? Oh, we have no one.
But I know a man at the refugee station 20 kilometres from here.
- I will call him.
- All right.
Wait.
One thing I miss about the city, no empty warehouses to hide in.
All right, we'll rest for a second.
Come here.
Please? See if we can make these guys think we're someplace else.
So you're saying this man is the only mechanic you have? I understand.
The mechanic at the other station has been sent to Bangkok.
- lsn't there anyone else you can call? - Oh, Sister, please understand.
Our resources are so limited.
- We have no people who can just-- - I know.
We do have people, and they're stuck on the other side of the border, in very serious trouble.
In three and a half hours, they expect me to come back and get them.
And somehow I'm gonna do it.
I will continue to try.
One more of these saplings ought to do it.
Grab those vines on the other side of the log.
- Pull them together.
- You got it.
Here's another one.
Give them a yank.
- Is that tight enough? - Yeah.
The more tension we put on these vines, the further away those guys will think we are.
That ought to hold it for now.
I've never been able to figure out how your mind works.
How do you think of these things? Well, if it comes down to me against a situation, I don't like the situation to win.
How many more rocks do we need? These ought to be enough to get their attention.
They should fly about 1 00 feet if we're lucky.
There.
Now, we're gonna need some kind of time-delay fuse.
Do you have anything that will refract light? A crystal? A prism of some kind? We could try my rosary.
Sister Margaret gave it to me, but seeing as this is an emergency It's perfect.
Gotta make sure this coil is wide enough so it'll catch the sun before it changes position, be in the right spot for a few minutes.
So the light will go through the beads.
Right, and it'll be focused on our small vine.
Kind of like a solar fuse.
We'd better go.
Three-thirty.
Two and a half hours to get back to the clearing.
Bad luck, I'm afraid, mes amis.
There is not a qualified mechanic within 200 kilometres.
How far across the border are your friends? Our orphanage is near the village of Sonh Pra.
What about that old truck over there? Would that get us there? Oh, it is too dangerous.
It is too far.
And besides, that truck has not run in months.
That, as you Americans say, is the line at the bottom.
Well I guess we'll have to fix the chopper ourselves.
What? Maggie, how in the sam hill are we gonna do that? I'm good with broken-down machinery.
It's the only kind I've ever had.
Besides, what else is there to do? Over there! Rocks.
Don't you see what he's doing? If rocks are landing around us, they had to be thrown from there.
Move out! Come on.
Come on, come on.
Hurry, hurry.
Rosary beads.
This man is quite ingenious.
He wants us to think he's going away from the bushes where the rocks landed.
But he's going toward them.
You, go to the creek.
Watch for them.
You, circle around.
The rest, follow me.
You said he'd do that.
Yeah.
But something tells me this guy's got brains he hasn't even started to use.
All right, it's 4:1 5.
If they keep moving, we may have bought ourselves enough time to get back to the clearing.
Let's go.
MacGyver, if you weren't here right now, where would you be? Well, the big camel races are in Morocco this time of year.
Come on.
Skating with the Rangers? I'm serious.
All right.
Come here.
We really had something.
I wanna know why you left.
You were gonna ask me to get married.
- You knew that? - Yeah.
Well, if you knew I was gonna ask you, why didn't you say something? I don't know.
I I just wasn't ready to be married.
It was bad timing, Mac.
- Neither of us were ready.
- I was.
That was eight years ago.
- We're not the same people anymore.
- Sure we are.
I still like hockey.
And I'll just bet that you still like pickles dipped in cream cheese, don't you? I thought I had stopped thinking about you.
I was so wrong.
- I can't do this.
- What? If they hadn't come after us, I'd be getting ready to take my vows.
Your vows? What do you mean? I'm going to be a nun.
We'd better get out of here.
- I heard gunfire.
- Yes.
This way.
This is too small.
Give me the three-eighths.
What did you wrap around that hose? Oh, an Ace bandage from the medical kit.
Screwdriver.
Well, I figured that's what Mac would use.
You know, I wasn't surprised when I saw you there today.
You always seem to show up when I need you most.
Yeah.
Funny how we keep bumping into each other, isn't it? Every six or eight years.
All right, let's get the pilot and see if we can get this thing off the ground.
Come here.
Look.
How did they figure that out? Maybe he has seen a lot of Westerns.
Come on.
We gotta go.
Come on.
Come on.
The igniter's missing.
Engine won't fire up the fuel without it.
It was there before.
- Wasn't it? - It sure was.
Well, it's gone now.
He'll be here.
Let's just keep moving around the edge of the clearing.
Come on.
Halt! I'm proud to have had such worthy adversaries.
I almost regret that this game is now over.
How did they know we'd be at the clearing? Kind of curious about that myself.
What do you think they'll do? Well, they could give us a lift to the border but I wouldn't count on it.
Oh, yeah.
They must be using the orphanage as a headquarters or something.
This used to be the old kitchen.
These are your crimes.
It's important the people know you're not being punished without cause.
Hey, you spelled my name wrong.
It is a shame to waste your sense of humour on me alone.
But tomorrow at high noon, the entire village can witness your final performance.
MacGyver.
"High noon"? This guy's seen too many Westerns.
You know, there is something very wrong with this whole place.
Well, we now have till 1 0 tomorrow morning to find that igniter and get back to MacGyver.
I'll start looking in that supply area by the chopper pad, okay? Thanks a lot, Jimmy.
Maggie, why don't you look in the kids' barracks.
Whoever stole the thing would never think we'd look there.
I'll go check the buildings by the gate.
- Be careful.
- Be careful.
What are you doing now? Well, the chimney's not big enough for us to get out.
We're not gonna make it, are we? What happened to all that faith? I'm just a novice, remember? Not with those kids, you're not.
At the convent they taught us that wanting things, needing people get in the way of our serving God.
I want to serve him, but now - Now what? - Everything was set, Mac.
I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life.
And now it is all upside-down.
I keep thinking that-- That maybe I want children of my own.
They tend to frown on nuns doing that.
And there are other feelings that I thought I'd trained myself not to have.
What difference does it make? We're not gonna get out of here anyway.
Yes, we are.
And then you're gonna have to decide what you really want.
I did decide.
I just didn't figure on you showing up.
- That's no decision.
- Oh, Mac.
- I've gotta think.
- Don't think.
Feel.
It would never work with us.
- Why not? - It just wouldn't.
- Give me a reason.
- You're always moving around.
- You never stay in one place.
- I wasn't the one who left, remember? That was eight years ago.
I've changed.
So would l for you.
I never thought I'd hear that from you.
I never thought I'd say it.
Oh, my God.
Guard! Please help! Nice hit.
The Tigers could have used you this year.
Hey, it's getting light.
Now we count on Pete.
Well, look at this.
The igniter.
Patch me through to Captain Chanthara.
This is Gilbert Arnaud.
Chanthara? The American, Thornton, is planning another rescue.
At the same clearing, at 1 0:00 this morning.
I heard him talking to the nun.
No, no, no.
The helicopter has been sabotaged, but-- You have captured them? Well, then you have accomplished your mission, but with my help.
So you will now send me my money.
Merci, captain.
Looking for this? Well, mon ami, we'll just see that you don't go anywhere.
Or make a peep.
But they've been captured.
You heard what Arnaud said.
I know, Maggie, but I've got an agreement with Mac.
Now, I stood him up before.
I'm not gonna do that again.
The rest is up to him.
Nine-twenty.
Now, that gives me 40 minutes.
- I'm going too.
- Maggie, you're not going.
Listen, if anything should happen, those kids need you.
Maggie, if anything does happen, I want to say something.
If things had been different for us we really would have been something special.
In fact, if I had it to do over again, there's a lot of things I'd change.
No.
You'd have done everything just the same.
And so would l.
But it's lovely that you feel that way.
All right, let's get out of here! What happened? The Americans have gone to the clearing.
Alert the men.
Yes, sir.
That was easy.
I still-- I still don't understand why you wanted to stay here.
Well, chances are, Chanthara would catch us if we went back to the clearing.
But if we don't go, Pete will never find us.
Well, then it's up to us to let him know where we are.
And we're gonna do that with a little flare.
Chanthara took my knife.
Belt buckle's the sharpest thing I've got.
Gonna cut off some of this wire and make a saw.
And this bamboo leg here is just what we need.
I'm not following this plan.
How's a piece of bamboo gonna help us? It's got a natural sealed cavity.
No sign of MacGyver anywhere.
How much time before they're supposed to show up? Seven minutes.
Good.
Hang on to that.
- What's that stuff? - Oh, it's just plain old fertilizer, but it's got some chemicals in it called nitrates.
And they pack a pretty good zip.
Wanna hand me that wooden spoon back there? Great.
Hold that right there.
This will give it a little stability.
- It's a rocket.
- Yeah.
Hopefully, in about ten minutes, we'll have our own Fourth of July.
They must be here.
That is their plan.
Take cover.
And this funnel ought to make a great nose cone.
- What do you think? - Nice touch.
Thanks.
Arnaud was lying.
Fire on them.
I can't stay this low.
Ground fire will bring us down.
I can't see Mac.
I can't see anything.
There he is.
Jimmy! Up ahead! Near the orphanage.
- The flare, it's MacGyver.
- Right.
I know I don't have to say this, - but hang on.
- Okay.
Up! Take him up! - You all right? - Yeah.
Just great.
The Thai authorities took Arnaud into custody.
Margaret's gonna stay here and run this place until they bring up a new administrator from Bangkok.
Well, that's great, Pete.
Excuse me.
Howdy.
Listen, I know I'm a day late, but I wanna thank you for trusting me.
I owe you a new ball.
And you got any use for that? Listen, l I booked you a seat on the plane tomorrow.
You said I'd have to decide what I really wanted.
I have.
Are you sure? I've made a commitment.
Yeah, I'm sure.
You'll always be with me.
Well, Maggie, I guess I'll see you next time you're in trouble, huh? I'll be looking forward to it.
Yeah.
Me too.
I'll never meet anyone like her.
I know exactly how you feel.
