Macgyver s04e07 Episode Script

Deadly Dreams

Six-King- 1 4 to surveillance units.
Possible suspect vehicle approaching.
Red convertible, late model, California plates.
Looks like a customer.
Six-King- 1 4, we have a female Caucasian, blond, early 20s, approaching the rock house.
Looks like Beverly Hills material to me.
Knows where to shop.
- She's making the buy.
- The buy? It's cop talk.
So, captain, when are we gonna make the bust? - When Murphy says.
- Murphy? - The head narc.
- Yeah, I know.
The one who hates our modern technology.
Well, let's put it this way, Murphy was happy with the tank.
Six-King- 14 to surveillance units.
Suspect has made the buy and is leaving the area.
Six-Adam- 1 2, pick them off north of Gramercy.
We're moving in.
Twelve, roger.
Okay, captain.
Let's have MacGyver and his Phoenix fixer front and centre.
- See you.
- He's coming.
And listen, just give the new technology a fair shot.
It's all yours, MacGyver.
- All set.
- Go.
This is the police! We have probable cause to believe that narcotics are being sold.
Open the door! Three down and one to go.
Come on.
- Nothing.
It's dead.
- Shoot.
Now what? - Muscle.
- I got that.
Come on, get it done.
Get it done! I got one going for the john.
- Stop him! - I'm trying.
He's gonna flush the dope.
I got 1 2 kids, mister, and I'm going home tonight.
- What about you? - You all right? - I'm fine.
- Open up! Come on, open this door or I bust it.
Open up now, or I'll blow my way in! Hold it! Turn around and assume the position.
- It's too late.
- Not to worry.
Somebody give me a hand here.
- What? - Give me a hand.
Move the toilet.
Murphy had it covered.
- I'll say.
- Hey.
Perfect casting too.
Where's Murphy? Cooper, behind you.
Suspect going for the kitchen.
Hold it! Go prone, Tyrone.
- I said, down.
- Don't shoot.
- Way to go, Murphy.
- What happened here, lieutenant? MacGyver's new technology just cost us 32 seconds.
I want my tank back.
It was public uproar over that tank that got this project going in the first place.
- That's a brass problem, not mine.
- No, it's our problem, Murphy.
The contract your department has with the Phoenix Foundation is a five-year marriage.
Lab work, forensic studies, behavioural science, suspect profiles, DNA identification-- - New technology.
- Yeah, so, what's the gripe? You've got some of the best scientific support available to any police department in the country.
I'll send a thank-you note to the mayor.
See if you can find me something of Mel Gibson half-naked, will you, Wyatt? He's really not my type, ma'am.
- Wyatt's a dinosaur, lieutenant.
- I liked yours better.
What's that? I said, I'd like to get the device working.
Why don't you give me another shot? Then I'll get out of your hair.
- Listen to me, McGreever-- - It's MacGyver.
Whatever.
You just don't get it.
What we are doing here is police work.
Now, sometimes the public, civilians like yourself, just don't understand what it takes to get the job done.
- We don't, huh? - No, you don't.
Now, I've heard you hate guns, abhor violence, and I'm sure my tank is very chilling to your sense of justice and fair play.
But we do live in the real world here.
Guns and tanks and nasty crooks are all just a part of the big picture.
Well, I guess you got it all figured out.
Now you got it.
Thanks for coming in, MacGyver.
So, what now? Back to your test tubes or whatever you guys do? No, Wyatt.
You heard the lady.
The job's gotta be done.
I guess I'm just gonna have to do it without her.
See you around.
Don't be frightened.
Take one breath at a time.
Relax, Eric, relax.
Just take it easy now.
That's it.
Now, you have nothing to worry about, Eric.
Just don't panic.
Do you hear me? She'll be there? You're sure? I've studied them, Eric.
She'll come.
She will be your messenger.
I promise you an absolute breakthrough.
You will conquer time and death.
You'll be free of guilt forever.
In Valhalla.
I promise you that.
Now Iie down.
Nurse! Nurse! Something's wrong with Mr.
Cross.
Shallow respiration.
Clammy skin.
He's going into tachycardia.
He could be having a heart attack.
Get the gurney.
Get the on-call doctor.
I'll start an lV.
Security, code red.
East wing treatment room.
Security, code red.
East wing treatment room.
So, what do you think? What do I think? I think we're not too popular around here is what I think.
As soon as I got this thing working, I'm out of here.
All right.
Watch your eyes.
Could be a while, couldn't it? No.
Actually, I'm kind of enjoying it all myself.
Thanks a lot, Pete, thanks.
What? Not that.
Not your foot.
This.
Hanging out here.
Getting in on some real police work.
I like that.
Reminds me of my old days in intelligence.
Yes, sir.
Landing this contract for the Foundation is the best thing I've done in a long time.
That Phoenix contract is about to get its first real workout.
We've got a serial killer on the loose.
And you're a part of the task force.
Where you been, girl? I've been calling all over for you.
I had to stop by the D.
A.
's.
What's up? Captain's put together a task force and we're on it.
- Briefing's just getting started.
- Task force? For what? Something to do with a serial killer.
You okay? Yeah, fine.
Eric Cross, known as the Street Stalker.
His specialty was women who met his definition of loose.
He watched them, found the right moment, turned on his considerable charm, and then cut their throats.
Last night, he used some kind of drug to simulate a heart attack, then killed a male nurse, and made his escape from the security wing at the state hospital.
Any estimate on how soon he's gonna get the urge again? A good question.
First, Mr.
Thornton has a general rundown for you on serial killers.
Then we'll get down to specifics.
- Good morning.
- What about this Eric Cross? Can we get on with it? We all know about serial killers.
Some of us don't, lieutenant.
Sorry.
I just wanted to give a few general characteristics so that we would all have a handle on what you are going to be up against.
There is one significant factor we noticed about Cross.
About two months ago, his behaviour pattern changed.
He settled down, his suicide attempts stopped, he took up reading.
It seemed that he mellowed out.
Calm before the storm? Yeah.
Well, we all know what happened, don't we? The Phoenix report says the odds are 80-20 this lady will be his first victim.
Candy Farrell was Cross' last victim.
Luckily, she survived and testified.
But that got him locked up for pre-trial evaluation.
So I think there are very good reasons to expect that he's going to go after her.
Okay, here's where we go with it.
I want a 90-percent commitment from each table to the task force.
Homicide, you'll coordinate and run the interrogations.
Burglary-Auto, Cross will need a car.
Track every possible GTA citywide for the past 24 hours.
Robbery, he could be looking for a job.
Used-car salesman, retail clothing, bartending, cover it all.
Vice and Narcotics.
Lieutenant Murphy? - Lieutenant Murphy, are you with us? - Yes, sir.
You and your squad will have the girl.
- What? - She's a prostitute.
Your people know the streets best.
As of this moment, - we don't know where she is.
- I'm not sure we should be doing this.
Vice-Narcotic workload-- I don't remember saying this was a democracy.
Team leaders will coordinate with Pete Thornton for any lab and computer work.
He'll see it gets done.
Any questions? All right.
Find him.
Captain, I asked out of Homicide for a reason, you know that.
I have no choice, Murphy, and neither do you.
Look, I'm sorry.
I'm going back to the Foundation to set up the field-lab teams.
- You wanna cover the hospital? - What's that? The forensic shakedown on the Eric Cross cell.
I mean, where did he get the digitalis, or the atropine, or whatever drug it was that got his heart going so fast? I mean, that's our job, remember? - MacGyver? - Yeah, I got it covered.
- Are you all right? - Yeah.
I'm looking for an old friend of mine.
I'm told she used to work here.
Candy Farrell.
Candy Farrell.
Yeah, used to work the strip booth, but it's been well over a year ago.
- She ever come around? - Stops in now and again to say hi.
Last time, maybe three, four weeks ago.
You got a number on her? Maybe an address? No, Candy's always on the move.
Crashed in one of the strip motels, most likely.
Too bad.
We were neighbours when we were kids.
I really wanted to see her.
Run by some of the good times.
Look, why don't you leave me your name and number? She checks in, I'll help you two connect.
That would be great.
- Thanks a lot.
- Hey, no problem.
Police.
That sicko gave you the number of some dial-a-dream heaVY-breathing number.
Cost 5 bucks to make the call.
Guy's a real sweetheart, isn't he? I want you to do something for us, Mr.
Fontaine.
I want you to use your contacts, get on the phone, and help us find Candy Farrell.
Can you do that? And after you get it approved, you send this one to the section supervisor, - and this copy to Central Records.
- Central Records.
Got it.
MacGyver, Phoenix Foundation.
Yeah, right.
We've been expecting you.
Mr.
Davis? It's a lawyer named Lawson.
He says he represents one of the patients.
Yeah, Dr.
Zito.
Put him on hold.
Log it on the clipboard there.
I'll give him the phone.
Lawyers.
It's always something.
His cell is in here.
Do what you gotta do, but don't get too close to the patients, huh? No problem.
That's it there.
Having a good day, are we, Charles? Your lawyer's on the line.
And you can tell him he's abusing the privilege.
Oh, I'll let you tell him that, Charles.
But I suspect he'll give you an education on the difference between a patient's privileges and his rights.
Yeah, right.
Don't be all day.
This is Dr.
Zito.
Oh, yes, Mr.
Lawson.
How are things with you? It worked.
Just as you said it would.
Have you spoken to the arcade manager then? Yes.
The police are all over the place.
Good.
As expected, Eric.
You know how the police operate so well.
It's uncanny.
I've studied their methods.
The division of work for their feeble task force was totally predictable.
It is the Narcotics squad looking for your Candy Farrell, isn't it? It's them, all right.
And the officer in charge? She is with them? Lieutenant Murphy.
Yes.
She looks just like the picture you showed me in the newspaper.
Excellent.
That factor was only - We're right on schedule.
- What about the timer? Phosphorus.
You will find it in the warehouse with the other items.
- Yes, sir.
- Eric, remember all that we talked about.
Your place in Valhalla is ready.
But you must arrive before midnight, or you'll be refused entry.
Odin will not wait for you.
- Don't be afraid.
- I won't be afraid.
I'll go to sleep.
I'll be sure to be on time.
I promise.
You're doing a fine job.
You've been my guidance, doctor.
My Valkyrie.
And you will find your reward.
You're going to kill Lieutenant Murphy in a very special way.
Thank you, Mr.
Lawson.
Have a nice day.
These sketches, Eric Cross' work? Yeah.
Some talent, huh? Two months ago, he was a wild man, and then before you know it, he settles down and goes artsy on us.
Then the escape.
He killed Sam.
And from there on, it was a walk in the park to get out of the building.
The barrister sends his regards, Charles.
And his sympathy for Sam.
Oh, don't take it so personally, Charles.
These things happen.
I think you'll find Mr.
Cross to have anticipated most everything.
That so? He's quite an unusual man, you see.
It will be very difficult to stop him.
To solve his deadly riddle, so to speak.
His cunning is so complex, you'll have to be intellectually superior, exceptionally persistent, and possess an abundance of ingenuity to even get close to him.
Are you all of these things, Mr.
MacGyver? Yes.
I know your name.
Does that frighten you? Should it? Nice meeting you, Mr.
MacGyver.
- You okay? - Oh, yeah.
It's just that one guy in there could put frost on a sunny day.
Dr.
Zito.
Yeah, a real game player.
He wears the mask very well.
- The what? - The mask of sanity.
Ph.
D.
in genetics, favourite son of the DNA set, Mr.
Respectability, while he murdered nine people.
He-- He knew my name.
- Psychic? - Zito would like you to believe that, but we've been expecting you.
The walls have ears.
- Good.
- What's that you have there? Just a hunch.
Listen, would you mind checking with Maintenance, see who may have had a clogged drain or a stopped-up toilet - in there in the last week or so? - Sure.
And the library.
I wanna see all the books that have been checked out, same period of time.
- Send them to the police department.
- You got it.
Lieutenant? Ma'am? It's Murphy.
Okay? Yes, ma'am.
I'm sorry about the way I sounded off yesterday.
Hey, I understand.
Thirty-two seconds is a lot to lose out of any day.
How's it going finding the girl? - No luck yet.
- How about Cross? We're not working that end of it.
See you around.
Yeah.
Paulie can take care of himself.
He's 1 4 years old, for Pete's sake.
Twelve.
Right.
Angie, honey, I do care.
Of course I wanna keep track of my own kids, it's been a crazy week is all.
I got a lot on my mind, all right? Yes, yes, I'll make a list of their birthdays and I'll put it in my wallet, I promise.
No, I told you, all days off are cancelled till this task force is wrapped up.
What do you think, I run this place? I'm a peon.
You tell the captain.
Angie? Honey? I should've never left seminary.
I'd have been a priest by now.
Celibate, the whole thing, you know? - "Zito.
" - What's that? Oh, library books from the state hospital.
This one was checked out to one of the inmates, a Dr.
Zito.
Kind of connects to a piece of plastic I found in Eric Cross' cell.
Zito.
Yeah, I remember that case.
Nine victims.
Some people say he manipulated his way into the funny farm to stay off of death row.
There's Zito again, with a clogged toilet.
You're not into some kind of detective work here, are you, MacGyver? Well, enough to believe that Dr.
Zito had something to do with Cross' escape.
Both those guys were loners.
They're unconnected.
Now, why would Zito wanna help somebody else break out? Good question.
Maybe somebody in Homicide has an answer.
I think you could find a better answer from somebody who used to work in Homicide.
Someone who knows how Zito thinks.
Lieutenant Murphy.
She's the one who brought him down.
Well, that's quite a piece of detective work - for a civilian.
- For a civilian? Captain Walker will know who to assign this to in Homicide.
Well, actually, Sweeney said that you know how this guy thinks-- Sweeney's wrong.
We're a functional organisation, MacGyver.
- I'm out of Homicide now.
- But we are on the same task force.
And you're starting to cross the line.
Take it to the captain, MacGyver, I'm busy.
- I don't understand-- - That's right.
You don't.
Look, just because I'm not one of those blessed with a badge around here doesn't mean a new idea - won't help get a killer off the street.
- Will you drop it, MacGyver? No, I won't drop it.
Think about it.
You know this guy.
You investigated his crimes.
You interviewed him.
You got inside his head.
- Stop it! - That's exactly - what we've got to do now-- - Stop it! Murphy? I know how the man thinks.
I studied his crime scenes the way others look at a painting.
I am totally familiar with the artist's work.
I saw his cellar.
I saw what he did to those people.
I got inside the artist's head.
And when it was over, I spent three months in therapy.
I couldn't even read about him in a newspaper.
Can you understand that? If I deal with it anymore if I even look at Zito I'll lose my mind.
I'm sorry.
- Detectives.
- It's Fontaine.
- Is Lieutenant Murphy there? - Yeah, hang on.
Lieutenant, it's for you.
It's that arcade manager, Fontaine.
- Lieutenant Murphy.
- I think I found her, lieutenant.
- Candy Farrell? - Where? One of my girls who works here said she's making a porno film at a warehouse on lndustrial.
Thank you, Mr.
Fontaine.
We're on it.
Perfect.
Back again, Mr.
MacGyver? You're good.
Yes, I know.
Still trying to solve Eric's deadly riddle? Oh, I've worked a couple of things out.
So tell me.
The heart attack, for one.
See, if you tear a piece of plastic off the flap of one of these books and you fold it up work it around a little bit Iike this keeps its form.
You got a nice little cup to drink from.
Fascinating.
But where does the heart attack come in? Let's speculate.
Let's say someone expert in chemistry and physiology got his hands on just the right chemical.
Something with a strong alkaline base.
Like the industrial cleaner they use to unclog a drain, - right here in the hospital, for example.
- Yes.
Let's do speculate.
Well, it's dangerous but if this expert diluted the stuff perfectly he might be able to make himself a non-fatal alkaline cocktail.
And whoever drank it would suffer a condition known as alkalosis.
Which promotes clammy skin, shallow respiration, and rapid heart palpitations.
Excellent.
But how in the world could this man of science possibly pass this alkaline cocktail from one cell to another? My, my, my, my, my.
It's all so brilliant, isn't it? Thought you might say that.
The book, the chemicals, the means of transport, they all connect to your cell, Dr.
Zito.
You helped Eric Cross escape.
So? Now what? Are you gonna have them take away my library card? Six-King-20, show us Code Six at 21 4 lndustrial.
Six-King-20, roger.
Six-Zebra-Four and Five, fire department needs traffic control at Lankershim and Magnolia.
Light's down.
Well, Candy Farrell, how's the motion-picture business? Come on, Father Sweeney.
Weird.
Really weird.
Must be shooting the bedroom scene.
And this must be their "do not disturb" sign.
Stand back, Murphy.
Looks like nobody's home.
You're the chosen one, Lieutenant Murphy.
You're very lucky.
See, the question is, why would you help someone escape? I could have dozens of reasons.
Humanity, for one.
Didn't you think of that? Humanity? No, I don't think that's the reason.
What makes you so sure? I've seen your file.
You are a self-centred, egotistical psychopath who has to have control of everything.
Aren't we perceptive? Now, with that in mind, why don't you just tell me how to solve this so-called deadly riddle? - Why ask me? - Because you hold all the cards.
The stakes in a game of this nature are very high.
You see, time is running out.
By midnight, the riddle will have solved itself.
But I do enjoy a good card game, Mr.
MacGyver.
Now we're sure of our privacy.
Not yet.
It's too early.
I looked at Cross' file.
It says his behaviour changed in the last couple of months.
You have something to do with that? Well, you could say I counselled him.
Oh, yeah? It says he took up reading and artwork.
So far, all I can see that he's read or drawn has something to do with Viking history.
I suppose the man had a quest to understand his ancestral roots.
Religious practices, funerary rites, a sacrifice to Odin.
This guy is obsessed with Viking burial stuff.
I'd like to continue this, but I'm bored.
The game's over, Mr.
MacGyver.
There we are.
I'll be getting sleepy soon.
It's almost time.
You were reading Jung earlier today.
Man and His Symbols.
You into dream analysis, Dr.
Zito? I said, the game was over.
You know, you really didn't help Eric Cross get rid of his guilt, you just showed him a way to get rid of it.
Is there a difference? One is now, the other is later.
In the afterlife, maybe? Valhalla? My, my, my, my, my.
We may be on to something.
You know, you load up a guy like Cross with a bunch of mumbo-jumbo, you can turn him into just about anything you need.
I have no idea what you're talking about.
Sacrifice to Odin, the Viking god of death? "He grants victory to one man, but summons another from the battlefield to the other world, the power of fire takes him to Valhalla, and his soul is cleansed of guilt.
" Bravo.
So now you know that Mr.
Cross is seeking a peaceful and fulfilled afterlife.
So how could that possibly serve my needs? To get there, a handmaiden has to be sacrificed along with him, according to the book.
You're a fast reader.
"Strongest of all in this rite is the figure of the old hag, called the Angel of Death.
Her title is that of Valkyrie.
Chooser of the slain.
" Fascinating.
So, what does that tell you? The riddle is your plan.
The Valkyrie in this sketch is male, not female.
You've chosen his sacrifice.
And the sacrificial victim isn't just a handmaiden, she's wearing a chieftain's helmet and holding a shield.
She's someone special.
Someone in authority.
Murphy.
You're after Murphy! - Time's up.
- Where's Cross? Good night, Mr.
MacGyver.
Why didn't I see it? Murphy locked him up, his ego couldn't take it.
Not here.
She and Sweeney are out chasing a lead - on Candy Farrell.
- All right, listen to me.
Murphy is being set up.
Cross is after her.
Where did they go? - They're Code Six, at 21 4 lndustrial.
- What's Code Six? It means they're out of their car for investigation.
All right, I'm ten minutes away.
Meet me there, Code Quick.
And bring the fire department with you.
- Where's Murphy? - lnside, I hope.
I think Cross is with her.
And they're both going up in smoke at midnight.
- That's five minutes, let's get in there! - Not yet.
There's some kind of gas hissing behind this door.
What are you doing? - The principal is called optical density.
- Who? This motor oil has a refractive index that gives the frosted surface of the window a temporary polish.
Like that.
That's propane.
Matches.
This guy has set up some kind of booby trap.
Open the door, the whole building goes sky-high.
Man, who is this guy? He thinks he's some kind of Viking prince en route to Valhalla.
Murphy and the bonfire are his ticket out of here.
- What are you doing? - Soaking the match heads, so hopefully they don't spark when we open the door.
That should do it.
- All right, tell me it's safe.
- Stand back, just in case.
All right.
Leave the door open, let it air out.
God.
Oh, no, Sweeney? Solid steel.
Wyatt! My cutters.
They're in the Jeep.
Get them! - Those things don't work! - I fixed them! Get your equipment set up, we got a wild man inside, he might need watering down.
Come on, hurry up.
This gizmo better work this time, MacGyver.
- Here we go.
- Let's do it.
- Get your equipment up here, pronto.
- Give me a hand! Pressure's up.
Get the water over there.
Grab some of the extinguishers.
Bring them.
We need two of them.
- Come on, Ed.
Come on.
- Here we go.
- You okay? - Talk about being just in time.
Oh, nonsense.
We had a good 32 seconds to spare.
Your deal, Dr.
Zito.
The smell of victory, Mr.
MacGyver? Something like that.
Lieutenant Murphy? How is she holding together? Why don't we ask her? Murphy's gonna be fine, Dr.
Zito.
