Macgyver s04e09 Episode Script

Cleo Rocks

Igrew up an only child.
No brothers or sisters.
But somehow Penny Parker brings out the big brother in me anyway.
She's the kind of girl who needs, well, looking after.
Ever since I've known Penny, and that's going back a while, she's been trying to break into show business.
When she landed the role in a new musical, I was the first one she called with the news.
I couldn't resist her invitation to drop in on a rehearsal.
Besides, it never hurts to get a little culture in your life.
MacGyver.
Let the show begin.
I am the queen of the pyramids And I rule the Nile I am the queen of snakes Why don't you stay for a while? Yeah, the sphinx never sleeps Bury your soul in the sand And the tyrants weep As they hold my hand Cleopatra's wild I am the queen of the Nile Yeah, Cleo rocks Yeah, Cleo shocks I will take your world from you Yeah, Cleo shakes She dominates There's nothing I can't do You will love me forever Yeah, Cleo rocks Cleopatra's wild I am the queen of the Nile Yeah, Cleo rocks Yeah, Cleo shocks I will take your world from you Yeah, Cleo shakes She dominates There's nothing I can't do You will love me forever Cleo rocks Cleo rocks Cleo rocks Cleo rocks Stop! Reset the playback.
It's a nightmare.
It is terrible.
It has no fire, no spark.
I'm sorry.
I can do better, Mr.
Leroux.
No, no, Penny, you are wonderful.
We will perfect the kick.
- It is Mr.
Newton here.
- I'll give you what you want.
But you have to let me feel my motivation.
Motivation? Your only motivation, monsieur, is to keep your job.
We open in less than a week! Leroux! Leroux, we've got to talk.
Now.
I have no time for your interruptions, Wintergreen.
I'm trying to rehearse.
Then I suggest you make time.
Very well.
Jimmy, run the dancers through the opening of Act 2.
Okay, Mr.
Leroux.
Dancers, get ready.
- What is this? - That was good, Penny.
Five thousand dollars for hydraulics? For what? How do you expect Cleopatra to make an entrance? Wintergreen, if you want a spectacular show, I give you spectacular show.
The only spectacular I've seen so far is the expense.
MacGyver.
Oh, you made it.
Yeah, I wouldn't have missed this for anything.
What'd you think? Was I okay? I was a little slow - coming out of the oesophagus.
- Sarcophagus.
And I missed that darn kick again.
No, Penny, you were terrific, believe me.
I'm very-- - Surprised? - lmpressed.
How I choose to stage my play is entirely up to me.
To a point, but this is crazy.
How do I explain this kind of money to the investors - if they start asking questions? - You will have to explain nothing.
When I unleash my production on the world, there will only be applause.
Oh, MacGyver, I still can't believe it.
You know they even put a star on my dressing-room door? I'm proud of you.
I'm sure there was a lot of competition for this part.
I don't know.
Right out of the blue, they called my agent, Sergio.
Don't tell me it doesn't pay to have good representation.
And Jacques, the director, he's so sweet.
You know, he was a dancer himself before he got in a car accident.
Kind of tragic, huh? Don't you hear me? Don't you listen? You cannot continue to spend without permission! I do not need your permission for every little detail.
I am the director! Now, our agreement gives me full creative authority.
Over choreography, set design and casting.
- Casting? - Casting! Doesn't look like he's let it slow him down.
You call that casting? The only experience she's ever had is delivering singing telegrams! We need a star to attract an audience! A star? Penny is better than a star.
- She is a discovery.
- She is nothing.
- Nothing? - Nothing.
Enough! This may be your theatre, but when I am in rehearsal, this is my stage! Then I suggest you get on with it.
My children, let's go from the bottom of the stairs, if Monsieur Anthony is ready.
Penny.
Penny, pay no attention to this Wintergreen.
The man is a pig.
Remember, mes enfants, give me passion, excitement.
Penny, look out! - Penny, you are not hurt? - No, I'm fine.
Thanks to my friend MacGyver.
Well, thank God for your presence, Monsieur - MacGyver.
- MacGyver.
That is enough for today.
Rehearsals are over.
Thank you.
Go home.
And it will be fini for all of us if these incidents continue.
Something like this happened before? Like this, no.
But other things, other accidents.
Yeah, like the dancer who fell down the stairs.
Or the janitor who got locked in the furnace room.
The door handle came off and he almost cooked all night.
Wintergreen.
He hordes his money, he saves nothing for upkeep.
Someone is going to get hurt.
You okay? - How'd that happen? - I don't know.
Well, it doesn't sound like this place is too safe.
Oh, there's more to it than that.
Some of the stage crew is even saying that the show has a jinx on it.
Poor Jacques.
Mr.
Wintergreen isn't making it any easier on him.
Your concern for old Jacques wouldn't be a little more than professional, would it? Well, we've been working so closely.
He's such a fascinating man.
Penny, I thought you swore off show-biz relationships.
Oh, this isn't show business.
It's theatre.
Flowers.
Oh, MacGyver, you didn't.
Oh, Penny, you're right, I didn't.
Must be another secret admirer.
"To your future.
" Oh, how sweet.
Dead roses? Well, somebody has a weird sense of humour.
I hope that's all it is.
Well, of course it is.
It's a joke.
It's just not funny, that's all.
- Penny? - Yes, Jacques? Penny, my dear.
Penny, rehearsals will begin an hour later in the morning.
It will be just you and l.
I want to work on the new routine for the seduction number.
I'll be right on time.
Please, forgive the interruption.
Penny, I'm gonna run along.
Take care of yourself, now, okay? Everything's under control.
Monsieur MacGyver, you and Penny are very good friends, yes? - We're kind of like family, actually.
- Of course.
She has told me of your adventures together.
I must thank you again for saving her.
Penny is a very special girl.
We must take special care of her, no? Yeah, well, she does take some looking after, that's for sure.
Of course.
Well, she is worth it.
Adieu, monsieur.
Ciao.
Excuse me, who are you? What are you doing here? I was just on my way out, actually.
I'm a friend of Penny Parker's.
Oh, yeah, little Miss Discovery.
You really shouldn't be wandering around back here on your own, you know, could be dangerous.
Yeah, you know, Penny said that a lot of strange things have been happening around here.
You ever think of checking them out? That's the stage door.
Why don't you check that out? Well, Penny may be right.
It's probably just somebody's idea of a joke.
A bad joke.
Yeah, well, it was no joke the way that sign fell.
- What do you mean? - I'm not sure, Pete.
I'll have to take a closer look before I start pointing any fingers.
Would you mind running a check on that theatre owner? Yeah, sure.
- What's his name? Wintergreen? - Right.
You're really worried, aren't you? Yeah, I am.
Mr.
Wintergreen, I think it's time you and I cleared the air.
What do I look like, a catalytic converter? Look, I know you don't like me very much.
But that doesn't mean you have to make it so hard on me.
I mean, I'm trying my best and, well, it's not making it any easier with you yelling at me all the time.
Please, don't start with the waterworks.
You wanna make it in show business, toughen up.
I know.
I'm all right.
It's just this break means so much to me.
You wait till opening night.
- I'm gonna knock their socks off.
- No.
No, you're not.
And you wanna know why? Because you're an amateur.
And nobody pays to see amateurs.
I'm a professional, Mr.
Wintergreen.
I'm gonna prove it to you on that stage.
You'll make me a lot happier if you prove it at the box office.
Who's that? Penny! What's all the screaming about? Somebody's following me.
And he's still in there.
- Any idea who? - I don't know.
But he makes this weird noise when he moves, Iike metal creaking or something.
Are you sure you weren't just spooked by the lights going out? MacGyver, I know what I saw.
All right.
Well, he's gone now.
Blood.
It's stage blood.
It looks like a poem.
Murder is in the air Under the temple of Ra Death awaits On the final curtain Oh, MacGyver.
Penny, the dead flowers might have been a prank.
But this is getting serious.
I think you should take some time off till we can figure out what's going on.
I can't leave the show.
Besides, theatre people are-- Are always playing jokes like this on each other.
- Oh, fun people.
- Penny.
Penny, I've been waiting on-stage.
Monsieur MacGyver, is there something wrong? No, I'm okay, Jacques.
Just somebody playing a sick prank.
I wish I knew who would do such a thing.
Wintergreen, this is who.
He's been trying to force me out ever since rehearsals began.
Believe me, if I could find a theatre big enough for my production, I would take my Cleo elsewhere, today.
Mr.
Wintergreen wouldn't do something like this, would he? I don't know, but he sure has the power to do something about it.
- Excuse me.
- Of course.
Mr.
Wintergreen? You again.
What is it? Just hang on a second, I wanna talk to you about something.
Penny and I found this stuck to a fitting dummy.
With this.
Murder is in the air Under the temple of Ra Death awaits-- So? So I think you should do something about it.
Like what? Want me to call the police? What am I gonna tell them? My leading lady has been assaulted by a poem? - Doesn't even rhyme.
- Wintergreen-- Look, I'm trying to run a theatre here.
Between that flake Leroux and worrying about your friend the star, I've got enough on my plate.
You cannot ignore what's been going on around here.
What's been going on around here is a lot of wasted time.
The show opens on Friday.
If it flops, we close on Saturday.
My father opened this theatre.
The only reason I let Leroux talk me into this rock'n' roll freak show is to try and save this theatre from becoming - another downtown parking lot.
- All right.
But the least you can do is consider hiring some security guards to keep an eye on the place before somebody gets hurt.
I will take it under advisement.
The lab found no prints on the knife.
So whoever did this was anxious to cover his tracks.
- So much for the practical-joke theory.
- Yeah.
- Anything on Wintergreen? - Yeah, right here.
Benjamin Wintergreen.
In debt up to his eyeballs.
The overhead on that theatre has been bleeding him dry for years.
Yeah, so he says.
Well, did he also tell you that he's got Penny's show insured right up to the limit? He'll take in quite a tidy sum if it closes for some reason.
- What would that take? - Oh, any number of things.
Accident, fire Something happening to the leading lady? Yeah, maybe.
- Where's the evidence? - I'm working on it.
No, no, no, Penny.
It's ball change, hip swing, then kick.
Okay? - Clumsy, huh? - You will be wonderful.
Let's take a break.
Oh, Jacques, you make it so easy.
I don't think anybody's ever believed in me the way you do.
Except maybe MacGyver.
You care about him very much, yes? Sure.
He's like big brother.
Then it would not be improper of me to offer you this.
Oh, Jacques, you're too good to me.
Impossible.
- It's beautiful.
- Not half as beautiful as you, my dear.
You will wear it when I take you to dinner tonight? I'd love to.
You are very beautiful, Penny.
Your every movement brings my music to life.
Sulphur.
Yes, yes.
Yes, very well, I'll tell him.
Oh, Mr.
Thornton, it's Penny Parker.
Well, what's the problem? She and MacGyver are at the theatre.
Something's wrong.
- She said they need your help.
- Oh, boy.
- Here, take that.
- What are you gonna do? I'm going down there to see what's going on.
Murder is in the air Under the temple of Ra Death awaits On the final curtain Murder is in the air Under the temple "Murdoc.
" That's impossible.
Remember me, MacGyver? Say goodbye, MacGyver! MacGyver! Pete? Come quick.
Hurry.
I need help.
Please hurry.
Before it's too late.
Oh, no.
Help.
Oh, please help me, Pete.
Oh, please help me, Pete.
Oh, please help me, Pete.
Peter Thornton.
It's been a long time.
Murdoc.
But you're dead.
Would you care to join me? Come on, Pete.
Get in the cage, Pete.
In the cage.
It's been a long time, Peter.
I must say, though, I'm a little disappointed.
You've made this far too easy for me, Pete.
Well, I guess I didn't expect to be coming up against a dead man, did l? You know me better than that, Pete.
You haven't stopped me before, and you never will.
How long have we been playing this game, Peter? What is it? Ten? Fifteen years? Once upon a time when they needed a man for an assassination, a killing, they would get me.
The best man for the job.
The best man in the business.
Quick, neat, untraceable.
Took great pride in my work, made a very good living out of it.
Had a lot of fun until you and your friend MacGyver came along and spoiled the party.
Well, MacGyver's not gonna spoil this party, is he? Do you know what the Periplaneta americana is, Murdoc? - Should l? - The common cockroach.
And that's what you are.
You calling me common, Pete? Always skittering in and out of the darkness.
Well, even cockroaches can be stopped.
We'll see.
You know, I've spent a long, long time preparing this masquerade, Pete.
Designing this killing ground especially for you.
I've anticipated everything MacGyver's creative little mind can come up with.
I have a special plan for both of you.
Why don't you spare me your cheap theatrics? If you're gonna kill me, go ahead and get it over with.
Don't worry, Pete.
I'm not gonna kill you.
No.
I'm saving that job for MacGyver.
Here you are.
Thanks.
Good night.
Jacques? Jacques? Hello? Bravo, my darling, don't be shy.
Your adoring public awaits.
We're gonna put on a very special show, you and l, one that'll really bring down the house.
Stop it! Stop it, whoever you are, stop it! - Penny? - Oh, MacGyver, thank God.
Hello, MacGyver.
You finally deciphered my little poem.
It took you long enough.
Thornton's already here, but I'm afraid he isn't really having a very good time.
You know this person? Who is he? His name's Murdoc.
Come on.
- What does he want? - Revenge.
He's been behind everything.
The poem, the flowers, he rigged that sign to fall.
Penny, go to your dressing room, call the police, Iock your door and keep it locked.
Go.
Go on.
Dead.
I'm up here, MacGyver.
Come and get me.
That's right.
You're getting warmer.
Come closer.
You're burning hot now, MacGyver.
Then, so is Pete.
What's the matter, MacGyver? Can't find your mummy? Come on, Murdoc, get on with it.
Where's Pete? It's showtime, MacGyver.
This is what we've wanted for a long time, MacGyver.
Just the two of us.
Face to face, no tricks.
Do you really think you're good enough to take me? Well, you'll have to, if you wanna find Pete.
- Penny? Are you in there? - Jacques? Open the door.
- Jacques, is that you? - Yes, Penny.
Come in, quickly.
Penny.
Penny, what is wrong? What is it? MacGyver said to call the police, but when I tried the phone, it was dead.
Oh, Jacques, it's horrible.
There's some kind of madman out there.
- A madman? - Yes! He's after MacGyver, and he's already got Mr.
Thornton someplace.
No, no, no, Penny, you are wrong.
I am not mad.
I'm just very, very determined.
No, it can't be.
Come closer, MacGyver.
Don't be shy.
We'll see who's the better man, once and for all.
This is what we've both wanted for a long time, MacGyver.
Just the two of us, face to face.
Wintergreen.
No tricks.
Come closer, MacGyver.
Don't be shy.
We'll see who's the better man, once and for all.
This is what-- You didn't really think it would be that easy, did you, MacGyver? Murdoc! Let her go! - The fun is only just starting.
- MacGyver, help! - It's me you want.
- How true.
Won't you join us? MacGyver! Help! It was you all the time.
There never was a Jacques.
Jacques Leroux has, how do you say, retired.
Permanently.
One of my better performances.
Home sweet home.
You actually live here? It's so dark and creepy.
Well, when you look like I do, one learns to welcome the dark.
Mr.
Thornton.
Penny.
No.
- Oh, no.
- Oh, yes.
MacGyver will be along shortly, and then my masterpiece will be complete.
Careful, my darling, it's actually quite deep.
Doesn't look like much, does it? Just a slim thread.
Only, this thread is made of high-tensile steel.
Very strong.
And this release switch I'm attaching it to is very sensitive.
Just imagine the possibilities, Pete.
This way, Penny Parker.
Murdoc! She can't hurt you! Let her be.
I hardly think you're in a position to make demands, Pete.
Murdoc! MacGyver! At last! Don't open the door, it's rigged! MacGyver, be careful! They're both right, MacGyver.
Open the door, and Pete will drown.
Or you don't open the door and you die.
It's up to you, MacGyver.
It's either deep-fried Thornton or pancake MacGyver.
Either way, one of you gets to watch the other die.
Enjoy.
MacGyver! Let me go! Where are you taking me? There's a trip line hooked to the door.
Where is it? It runs along the bottom of the door to a release switch.
Maybe I can reach it.
- Now, give me your hands.
- What are you gonna do? I still need you, Penny Parker.
Now, one of them is coming out of there alive.
Which one do you think it's gonna be? Please.
Jacques Leroux wouldn't do this.
- There is no Jacques Leroux.
- Yes, there is.
He writes beautiful music.
And he's sensitive and charming and romantic.
You brought it out in me, Penny.
You're running out of time.
Get out of there! Guide me, Pete.
Tell me when I got it.
Lower.
Lower! No, you're never gonna make it.
Forget about me.
Save yourself.
Open the door.
You hear me, MacGyver? Save yourself! Before I met you, I didn't know what it was like to smile.
Just for the sheer joy of it.
If only we'd met in another lifetime.
You're gonna kill my best friends and you're saying that-- I love you.
That's exactly what I'm saying.
MacGyver's right.
You are insane.
Well, we'll see about that.
Wait a minute, that's almost it.
A little further.
That's almost it! You got it.
Okay, you got it.
Now get out of there! Help me! Please, somebody help! Forget about me.
Go help Penny.
The lock.
Work on it.
MacGyver! Mr.
Thornton! Somebody, please help me! Help me! Penny? - MacGyver? Is that you? - Penny.
My hero.
So Pete's dead.
I knew you had it in you, MacGyver.
Underneath it all, we're so much alike.
- I'm almost sorry to see it end.
- Oh, come on, Murdoc.
After all this, you're not gonna shoot me, are you? Well, MacGyver, I know it's not very creative, but it gets the job done.
Murdoc! MacGyver! - Are you all right? - No.
But I'll live.
Thanks for your help back there.
I knew I could get that kick right.
Jacques would have been so proud.
I still can't believe that Jacques was this Murdoc person the whole time.
I mean, how could somebody change his voice and appearance completely? Well, that was his specialty, being somebody else.
It's almost sad.
You really think he's dead? I think it's a matter of wishful thinking on my part.
I'll be happy when I can close his file.
Don't get your hopes up.
They drained the underground pool.
Don't tell me no Murdoc.
There was a broken sewer line connected to the pool.
Not big enough for any normal human being to get through.
- Murdoc is not normal.
- That's for sure.
If he's alive, he'll be back.
That's a scary thought.
He really had me fooled.
You know, he made me feel like I did have talent.
Penny, you do.
I saw you on-stage.
You're terrific.
- You mean it? - Yeah.
Oh, which reminds me.
MacGyver asked me to bring this from the theatre.
- My star.
- Yeah.
You might wanna hang on to that, I think you're gonna need it soon.
Oh, MacGyver.
Oh, Penny.
