Madam Secretary (2014) s03e14 Episode Script

Labor of Love

1 TV ANCHOR: The South American nation of Colombia has been engaged in a devastating domestic conflict for more than five decades, which has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives.
On one side, the conservative, democratically elected government.
On the other, a powerful far-left rebel group.
But today, an historic truce is on hand, and for that we can thank these two millennials, Juan-Luis Moreno and Soledad Penagos, otherwise known as the "Romeo and Juliet of Colombia.
" HENRY: Hey, can I get a hand over here? Romeo and Juliet are gonna be in town for three days celebrating this peace deal.
- You're gonna see a lot more of that.
- Can't wait.
Well, I for one think they're adorable.
You shouldn't be so jaded about love.
It's gonna happen to you one day.
Want to bet? It's so bogus.
Anyway, it's a manufactured relationship.
A complete and total media creation.
Thank you, Noam Chomsky.
Now, you want to give me a hand? The son of the president and the daughter of the resistance leader just fall in love, and a peace treaty is born? And you guys are just lapping this up.
It's about passing the mantle to the millennials - on a global scale.
- HENRY: The main point is that when this peace treaty is signed in a month, Colombia will end a half a century of conflict.
And then? Juan-Luis and Soledad's wedding.
I rest my case.
Yes No, what I was actually talking about is the aid package that State has put together for all of South America.
We're signing an MOU with Venezuela this week.
I know I've talked about this before.
An MOU STEVIE: It's a Memorandum of Understanding, right? It's, like, the document that lays out our strategic objectives with Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador.
Yes! Thank you! It was not easy getting these countries to agree on anything, so it is nice to know that one of my kids listens to me.
Actually, I was listening to Russell Jackson.
Ooh Okay, yesterday, he made me Soledad Penagos's White House liaison.
- (gasps) That is so exciting! - Hey! - So I've been up all night, - (phone vibrating) and I'm learning everything I can about the peace deal and the trade agreements.
Is that work? Because if it is, you said you would give me a ride.
- You cannot bail! Because I don't have a car today.
- I can, I can.
- I can if you hurry and we go right now.
- Okay.
All right.
- I'm done.
I'm done.
- The Venezuelan foreign minister is on his way to my office, and he used the word "urgent.
" Problem with the aid package? Unless he has an urgent muffin basket for me.
SCOTT: Okay.
But the apartment's as much yours as it is Abby's.
She can't keep you locked out forever.
I'm not locked out.
I I agreed to give her space.
Four weeks is a lot of space.
All part of the process.
But, yeah, it feels like an eternity.
But we have another therapy session this morning, so I'm gonna propose Hey, roomie.
Scott.
a timeline for me to come home.
Hey, how about the three of us grab drinks tomorrow night? That new bar on 18th? Maybe we'll even have something to celebrate, huh? All right, man.
Can we just start drinking now? (both chuckle) Minister Rojas, when we spoke yesterday, you assured me that Venezuela was on board with the aid package.
And today, President Alvarado is having second thoughts.
Your country is still recovering from the earthquake that killed his predecessor.
Why on earth would he refuse international aid? In his inauguration speech, Alvarado promised to continue the legacy of the late President Suarez.
Which means he can't appear to be too friendly with the U.
S.
Seriously? There's also the issue of tying us financially to Colombia.
For the good of everyone involved.
- You want coffee? - No, thank you.
We'll be able to replace illegal coca fields with high-value exports, like açaí and quinoa.
It will help grow the entire region economically, and it will significantly reduce drugs and crime in the U.
S.
And it is a great contribution to the world at large.
How could your president not want to be a part of that? It is only a pipe dream if the peace agreement doesn't hold.
Back home, there are rumors that it is on shaky ground, that the Colombian congress is wavering.
President Moreno and ECS leader Mateo Penagos do not get along.
They've been at war for 50 years.
It is totally unrealistic for anyone to think that they should suddenly become drinking buddies.
Can we just settle for peace first, and then worry about friendship? In the meantime, they have promised that they will keep their congress in line.
(knock on door) Uh one second.
- Uh, sorry to interrupt, ma'am.
- Yeah.
Russell Jackson has requested that you visit the Oval Office on the way to the press conference.
Aren't he and Dalton meeting with the Colombian delegation - He said it was urgent.
- right now? - Hey.
- How's it going? So this is finally happening.
IAN: Dr.
McCord.
Ian.
How you feeling? Like I'm about to jump into the deep end of the crazy pool.
You go ahead and joke all you want.
Just make sure you got it locked down when you meet these guys tomorrow.
Look, I know you've been undercover on criminal ops, but you've never dealt with religious radicals.
These guys are hard-core, I get it.
HENRY: When I went down to the Covenant of John in Bolivia, 37 people died by suicide.
I couldn't stop it.
And this new hybrid group is even more dangerous.
They've twisted the Bible to justify violence, and they literally believe God is on their side.
They're not just hard-core.
If they sense the slightest threat, they won't hesitate to kill you.
The only thing they're gonna sense from me is a deep devotion to their cause.
Okay.
Here's your gear.
Here are your documents and your I.
D.
for your cover.
Major Ryan Gallagher.
There's a GPS sewn into the lining.
Once you arrive, we'll pinpoint the location.
What if I need to report back? Should I know what that is? It's a camera.
This will transmit wirelessly back to HQ.
Won't they check my stuff for that? Yeah, but this will be embedded in your skin.
It's new tech.
The Bureau will apply a semi-permanent tattoo on your neck to match the ones on your arms.
Wow.
I heard about this technology.
I didn't know it was operational.
How reliable is it? The Bureau's been using it before, and they approved it for this op, so Cool.
I'm down with being a science experiment.
Just get in, find the bomb.
FBI will send in a team to raid the compound.
JACKSON: What took you so long? I don't know.
Laws of physics? What's going on? Colombia's president, Natalia Moreno, is in there with the rebel leader, Mateo Penagos, and the two lovebirds.
Wild guess President Moreno and Señor Penagos aren't getting along.
Yeah.
How'd you know? A little Venezuelan bird told me.
This meeting was scheduled to last an hour.
The president and I are running out of small talk.
(door opens) Elizabeth.
- So glad you could stop by.
- Hi! President Moreno, Señor Penagos, - this is Elizabeth McCord - So nice to meet you.
our Secretary of State.
Well, it is an honor to be hosting your families this week.
We are so happy to be here.
The honor is ours.
Um, allow me to introduce my daughter, Soledad.
- An honor.
- Pleasure.
And my son, Juan-Luis.
- Hello.
- Welcome.
This truce is such an amazing accomplishment.
You must be very proud.
- Yes.
Thank you.
- (chuckles) It has been our dream since we met.
(chuckles) My daughter's being modest.
Uh, she's a brilliant, strong-willed young woman.
She would not allow us to leave the negotiating table until peace was declared.
(laughs) NATALIA: But it was Juan-Luis who structured the agreement.
He demanded the rebels give up their arms.
MATEO: In exchange for a voice in our government, because a better life for our people begins with stronger social programs.
A better life for our people begins when guerilla fighters are no longer invading their homes.
(both arguing in Spanish) Hey! How's it going with the wedding plans? Have you decided on a color scheme yet? Oh, yes.
Uh, yellow, blue and red.
Like the colors of the Colombian flag.
And the ECS flag.
Which is really just the Colombian flag with "ECS" written on it.
My daughter is also engaged.
Stevie.
I'm not sure if you've met her yet.
She works for Russell.
Yes, yes, she was saying she wanted to finish law school first.
- Maybe Harvard law.
- So impressive.
(chuckles): Yeah.
I have to admit that I have been peeking at dresses and venues online.
I-I don't want to interfere with the plans.
- Unless she asks me to, and then I absolutely will.
- (laughter) And her fiancé is studying physics.
They are going to be such a power couple.
Well, I think you two have redefined that expression.
(light laughter) Who wants more coffee? NADINE: This evening, there's a dinner at the White House with Penagos, Moreno, McCord and Dalton families.
Uh, Matt, the secretary's going to need some remarks for the dinner.
Acknowledge the historic occasion, but keep it light.
Portentous, but pithy.
I got it.
Can't imagine what it feels like to be Juan-Luis or Soledad.
I mean, when I was their age, I thought the pinnacle of pressure was being director of my a cappella group.
Now they're being groomed to run for office.
Maybe it'll inspire some of our youth to put down Snapchat and aim a little higher.
MATT: Seriously, it's like The Bachelorette but with righteous politics and, you know, world influence.
What? That wasn't your point? The point is that - everyone loves a love story.
- MATT: Really? When it's real, it has the power to change things.
(sighs) Sorry I'm late.
NADINE: Oh, Jay, we were just segueing from work talk to musing about Soledad and Juan-Luis's romance.
Really? 'Cause you know we're up against it trying to implement this ambitious aid program in South America.
Now we hear that Venezuela's getting cold feet? Okay.
So we were going to increase agricultural productivity and economic stability in the region while simultaneously hitting the drug trade where it hurts, but now it looks like none of that's gonna happen, so by all means, let's-let's just chat about the wedding of the century.
NADINE: Um, you know, we should hurry so we're not late for the press conference.
Jay I'm guessing that was about something other than frustration with the Venezuelans.
Are you all right? Yep.
Sorry.
It's just a bad morning.
Do you need to take the day? No.
Thanks.
Okay.
- Yeah, you can do it.
- That would be great.
Salutations, seventh floor dwellers.
BLAKE: Hey, Kevin.
Hey.
Did you leave five bucks for that cup of Joe? You think I want Daisy Grant putting me on blast? I cadged some of that fake vanilla creamer, too, in the interest of full disclosure.
(laughs): Oh! Hey, you notice how he answered a question with a question? Well, that's not answering the question.
I mean, you're in PR.
You should know that.
Seriously, let's see the fiver.
- Okay.
Bye, Kevin.
- What? I What'd I do? So I was, um, gonna stop by your office.
Are we still on for tomorrow night? Absolutely.
Unless something work-related comes up.
I'm totally cool with that.
Well, we don't have too many late nights or sudden emergencies in budgets and planning.
(laughs) So, uh, stop by when you're done for the day.
I'll see you then.
Get a room.
Things are going well with Kevin.
So far, so good.
Just wish I could relax and enjoy it.
Overthinking? You? I keep wondering, is there something more here? God, I feel silly even saying that out loud.
There's nothing wrong with looking to the future.
And, as you said, everyone loves a love story.
To dream is no great feat in itself.
Everyone dreams.
History is made by those with the courage to act.
And today, it seems that courage belongs to the young.
Juan-Luis, Soledad, your story and your relentless drive to turn what you imagine into reality is an inspiration to us all.
Thank you so much, Mr.
President.
We are thrilled to be here in the United States, representing our beautiful country.
Now, uh, if you have any questions, please.
- (reporters murmur) - Yes.
Can you tell us how you met? (both chuckle) Um sure.
I I-I had arrived at university when I learned that Soledad Penagos was attending the same school.
And so I-I got up my courage, I knocked on her door, and when this beautiful, dark-haired girl answered, I said, "I am Juan-Luis Moreno, son of President "Natalia Moreno.
"Don't you think it's time we do "what our parents' generation could not, and end this terrible conflict once and for all?" Unfortunately, he was talking to my roommate.
(laughter) Later he found me at the library.
JUAN-LUIS: Within an hour, she presented me with a list of demands, uh, government representation for ECS Mm-hmm.
a transitional justice system for guerrilla fighters, investment in infrastructure - And, of course, dinner.
- (chuckles) - (laughter) - JUAN-LUIS: And-and dinner.
(quietly): That girl is a natural.
She'll make a wonderful president someday.
SOLEDAD: The happiest day of my life was when our parents announced a truce, and, uh, Juan-Luis got down on one knee right there.
Yes.
You okay, man? Therapy with Abby didn't go the way I hoped.
She doesn't want to talk about me coming home.
And now she wants me to start calling at least an hour before I come over and see Chloe.
Oh.
Sorry.
I thought she wanted this reconciliation to work, but maybe there's something else going on.
You mean like someone else? I don't know.
(Juan-Luis and Soledad continue talking) (clears throat) You guys still on a family phone plan? I'm just saying, you can look online at the records, and see if there's any number that she's calling regularly that you don't recognize.
I saw it on Dateline.
Well, don't judge.
I'm just saying if you want to know.
DALTON: I don't understand.
She seemed fine at the press conference.
What's going on? They're not coming to the dinner.
I'm guessing they didn't get a better offer.
Soledad is gone.
JACKSON: She packed a bag, left her fiancé a "Dear Juan" letter calling off the wedding and disappeared.
Now President Moreno and Penagos are tearing their hair out and blaming each other, and the whole deal's unraveling.
You can't honestly tell me that the only thing holding this truce together was those kids.
I mean, I I know that the optics of the fairy tale romance were appealing, but I believed that this was rooted in something stronger.
Well, I thought so, too, sir.
I In all of our discussions, Moreno and Penagos both seemed deeply committed to moving forward.
The whole aid package is gonna fall apart.
The fate of South America is in the hands of a runaway bride.
Any idea where she might've gone? JACKSON: No, but every law enforcement agency in this city is on the case.
God forbid anything happens to her.
Well, she grew up evading death squads in the jungles of Colombia, so I think she can handle a night in D.
C.
Yeah, well let's hope it's just one night.
If we want to get Colombia back on the peace train, we need to find Soledad Penagos fast.
(sighs) Even if she is simply a runaway bride, you have put me in a very difficult position.
Based on your assurances that peace in Colombia was on track, I convinced President Alvarado that we should sign the Memorandum of Understanding and move forward with your aid package.
And President Dalton is still every bit as committed to seeing this peace treaty finalized next month, as planned, with or without a wedding.
Nevertheless, I must go back to Caracas and rather awkwardly withdraw my support for your memorandum until this situation is settled.
Can you just stick around for another day? Just give us a chance to straighten this out? Anything you need, my staff will provide it.
And I might have a lead on a couple of Hamilton tickets.
We could get you up to New York.
Stay at the Plaza Hotel.
Eh, I've already seen the original cast, (sighs) But, um What about a membership at one of those big box stores you have here? Yeah.
You bet.
Inflation in Venezuela makes prices on basic goods very high.
So if I can purchase a few things in bulk, even with the cost of shipping, I'd be a hero to my mother.
Oh, yeah.
I get it.
I've got a pantry full of toilet paper.
We're gonna make that happen.
Then you have until tomorrow.
(knocking) Um (clears throat) (chuckles softly) (whispering): Yeah? Hi.
So sorry, again.
Uh, but Stevie's here to see you, and she requests that you not be mad.
Why would I be mad? Because she has Soledad Penagos with her.
Where have you been? I-I walked the streets for hours.
Finally, I found a diner where I drank terrible coffee - and I cried until the sun came up.
- Oh, my God.
I-I didn't know I didn't know what to do.
But then I remembered Stevie.
I gave Soledad my number in case she needed anything.
It's fine.
I-I'm just I'm glad you're okay.
Everybody has been worried sick about you.
Well, she's not ready - to go back to the hotel yet.
- That's fine.
But we at least have to let everyone know that you're okay.
I-I just can't face any of them right now.
Especially Juan-Luis.
And my father Uh But I know what I want to do.
And that is why I asked Stevie to bring me here.
I need your help.
Of course.
I, wha What can I do? Issue me a visa, so that I can stay and study medicine in the United States.
(door opens) HENRY: Hey, Mo.
How's he doing? Good.
They're still on military background, but they're about to drill down on core philosophy.
WAYNE: Ryan, combat bonafide, he's a solid, but you know we're more than a paramilitary group.
We're soldiers doing the Lord's work here on Earth.
Bringing forth God's master plan.
Revelation 14:13.
"And I heard a voice "from heaven say unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth.
" "Yea, saith the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labours; "and that their works do follow them.
" - WAYNE: You know your scripture.
- Nice.
He did his homework.
But have you submitted to God's righteousness? When the Great Tribulation comes, only the worthy will be saved to sit at the feet of the Father.
John 1:8.
"If we say that we are without sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
" I don't presume to tell Him that I'm worthy.
I await His judgment.
And for the chance to serve Him and bring about His will, I await yours.
MO: Nice work, professor.
He's really got this down.
No worldly possessions.
We'll provide everything you need.
There's the GPS.
IAN: What about my truck? Is that a worldly possession, too? Necessary equipment for the battle to come.
Give me your keys.
I'll drive it to the compound.
Feel better driving my own vehicle.
I'm afraid I can't let you see where we've made camp.
Not until you've proven your loyalty.
I don't like the sound of that.
Damn it.
(exhales) Can we get a drone out there? Some kind of tail? Not in time.
Yesterday, when President Dalton spoke about dreams, and the courage to act on them, I realized I still want to be a doctor.
Soledad, you can get married and still become a doctor.
I don't know what I feel anymore.
Our relationship has never been ours alone.
It was always wrapped up in politics.
He even proposed to me in front of our parents and the Colombian press.
I just need time to think.
Where's Soledad? Stevie told me you have her.
I don't have her.
She's in my office, filling out a visa application, so she can study medicine in the U.
S.
Really hoping you were gonna talk her out of that.
Russell, I This is all Stevie's doing, isn't it? I know how she thinks.
She's-she's got the girl running with wolves and-and-and following her bliss.
Damn it! I (whispering): I know better than to trust interns with anything bigger than a lunch order.
It was Dalton's speech yesterday that made her rethink her future plans.
His words spoke to her.
You're kidding.
The dream into action bit? She's a revolutionary.
She'd never heard that before? Maybe it was hearing it in a different context.
and kidnapping to achieve their aims.
We did what we had to do in order to survive, all the while being-being hunted by government-backed hit squads.
You should still be classified as a terrorist organization.
DALTON: Now let's not dwell on the past.
ECS renounced kidnapping and violence against civilians.
I should have never agreed to waive tribunals.
The guilty should pay for what they've done! I couldn't agree more.
Elected officials with blood on their hands should be jailed! Okay.
Have you seen Soledad? Is it true she-she wants to leave me and stay in the U.
S.
? She doesn't know what she wants right now.
I know that you are disappointed that she's having second thoughts about the wedding, but I am certain that she has not changed her mind about the peace treaty.
DALTON: Peace can hold if you both are still committed to signing it.
NATHALIA: I'm very sorry, President Dalton.
This broken engagement is just another in a long line of betrayals.
I can no longer see an end to the conflict until ECS is finished.
MATEO: When I was ten years old, my father was murdered by the Colombian government, gunned down in front of me and my sister for the crime of reporting the truth about state-sponsored corruption.
I pledged my life then to this cause, and I will never abandon it.
ELIZABETH: The State Department will keep working on inducements to bring you all back to the table.
There is no trust.
And when there is no trust, there can be no agreement.
We will fly home tomorrow.
Come on, Juan-Luis.
(door opens) Here are the remarks.
Thanks.
What's up? He took your advice and checked Abby's phone records.
Any strange numbers? Yeah.
There's one.
Started calling about a week after I left the apartment.
First it was short calls every other day.
Now it's every day, and the calls are getting longer.
You try the number? It just goes to a robot voice saying that no voicemail's been set up for this account.
Sounds like a burner phone.
That's what you get when you don't want someone looking into your call logs.
Is this more Dateline? It's semi-legitimate journalism.
She's calling this new number from her own phone.
Maybe she has nothing to hide.
I should just ask her, right? I, uh (sighs) Hey, it's me.
I was wondering if I can come over later and see Chloe.
Kevin? You ready? (Daisy chuckles) You weren't playing about no stress here in Budget and Planning.
Hey.
Oh, my God.
Uh, yes, I have an emergency.
A man is I-I think he's dead.
(elevator dings) (sighs) Oh, I'm so sorry.
Thank you.
You didn't have to wait around.
I'm okay.
I don't, I don't think it's hit me yet.
Everything I want to say sounds trite.
The cops were asking me all these personal questions about him.
Where's he from? Where do his parents live? I mean, we never even talked about that stuff.
I hardly knew him at all.
How do you mourn something that never really even got started? Kierkegaard said (sighs) "The most painful state of being is remembering the future" Hey, I was just about to call you.
She fell asleep a few minutes ago.
Oh, sorry about the buzzer.
You cut your hair.
Yeah, I got it done at lunch, kind of an impulse.
Can I come in? Okay.
Sure.
How's work? Uh, i-it's an adjustment being back full-time, but, um, so far so good.
You? Our South American aid package is on hold because the Colombian peace treaty is falling apart.
Soledad Penagos called off the wedding.
I know, I read about it everywhere.
Yeah.
She's not in love with him anymore.
Eh, maybe she'll change her mind.
Uh, uh, I'm sorry, Jay.
I Right, right, right, right.
It's okay.
I should go.
I'm meeting guys for drinks.
Yeah, I wanted to ask you about the phone bill.
Yeah, I paid it.
You look really beautiful with your hair like that.
Thank you.
(door opens) (door closes) Ah, sorry, I didn't mean to wake you.
No, I-I was waiting up for you.
With the pillow over your head and the light off? Well, I didn't say I was successful.
(chuckles) How was your day? Soledad still isn't talking with Juan-Luis.
Nadine says that Jay and Abby have hit another rough patch.
You ready for this? A State Department employee died today, a guy from Budget and Planning.
Daisy found him in his office.
They were dating.
Oh, my God.
What happened? They think it was a heart attack.
Probably some congenital condition he didn't know about.
How's Daisy doing? She's shocked and sad.
This is not a good day for love.
I'm sorry, babe.
What is it with women and the fairy tale? Even if you grow up thinking you want to look life square in the eye, there's still this part of you that's looking for the pink, bubbly, happily-ever-after thing.
Hmm.
Or maybe it's just me.
No, not at all.
I am lying here, hoping for some of that happily-ever-after thing with Ian right now.
He's not Dmitri.
I know.
He's a trained field agent, he's been in tough spots before.
He even made it into the compound safely.
No, this is about me coming to terms with the idea that part of this job if I continue to do it is putting people at risk.
And the better job you're doing, the more at risk they are.
How inured to that do I want to get? Just enough.
Did I tell you she got a haircut? Not in the last 30 seconds.
Women cut their hair when they get out of bad relationships, don't they? It's like, it's like the hair is a metaphor for their sadness and regret, so off it comes.
Chop, chop, chop, chop, chop.
Now she's unfettered.
Free of me.
Or she could've gotten a haircut because her hair got damaged from too much blow drying.
SCOTT: Hey, guys.
Hey, Scott.
Looks like I need to catch up.
Ah, good luck with that.
You want another round? - Yes.
- No.
(sighs) Come on, you're not calling Abby again.
Look, short hair is not a metaphor, I promise.
The pixie is back.
I'm trying the mystery number again.
Maybe I didn't have the guts to ask Abby if she's seeing someone, but I can damn well ask the someone if he's seeing Abby.
(cell phone ringing) Did you hear that? Yeah, there's, like, a hundred phones in here, though.
(phone ringing faintly) Oh, come on, not me, dude.
I'm a little offended you'd even think so.
(phone continues ringing) (ringing grows louder) Just ran into my pal Travis.
He and his crew are headed over to Ajax in a few if we want to join.
What? (glasses rattle) Hey.
Good morning.
How'd it go with Abby? (sputters) Uh about like you'd expect.
She felt terrible that she hadn't told me about her and Scott.
It's true? I'm sorry, man.
She said it started with him being a shoulder to cry on.
Nothing physical's happened yet.
But, uh she said that, uh, she wants to see where it goes.
With a guy that would stab you in the back like that? It's not right, man.
I'll be fine.
There's no way you're really this okay.
I'm not even remotely this okay.
I'm just waiting to get my own place to start smashing things.
That's considerate.
(elevator dings) BLAKE: Morning, ma'am.
Ah, morning.
I've arranged for Foreign Minister Rojas to ship his bulk purchases through our diplomatic pouch, however he said he cannot wait any longer to discuss signing the M.
O.
U.
And that, if there's no word on the peace deal today, he's going to return to Venezuela.
You always deliver bad news with a strong cup of coffee.
I like that about you, Blake.
Thank you.
Hey, Nadine.
How's everybody here holding up? Well, uh, Jay and Daisy are inconsolable, but they would rather be at work than sit at home.
Well, unfortunately, with the deal the way it is, there's not much for them to do around here.
Uh, you think that Juan-Luis and Soledad would put the well-being of three nations above their lover's spat.
Okay, sorry, I'm a little romance fatigued.
If we could just get Romeo and Juliet in the same room together I did try to schedule a meeting so you could appeal to them directly.
They have both respectfully declined.
Maybe we're not the right people to be asking.
(knocking) (door latch unlocks) Hey.
Hey, your mom sent me for Soledad.
Is she here? Oh, yeah, she's on the couch.
Um, she hasn't moved since yesterday, and I don't know what to do, she's Let me see Ah.
I'm Daisy Grant from Secretary McCord's office.
I've got as much reason to wallow in misery as you do, but I'm not doing that, and you want to know why? Because I've done that before and it leads nowhere.
Juan-Luis.
Cómo Te Va? I'm Jay Whitman.
Secretary McCord sent me to talk to you.
Your mother told me that you were here.
Has Soledad changed her mind? Pues You have nothing to say that I want to talk about.
My wife left me four weeks ago.
Now she's dating my best friend.
If a stranger came up to me and said he might know how to save my marriage, I would listen to him.
ELIZABETH: It occurred to me this morning that in all of the excitement of two young people falling in love, negotiating a historic truce, and saving Colombia well, we might have forgotten how very young you really are.
I was right out of college when I married my husband.
And then shortly thereafter, he went into combat as a fighter pilot.
So, on top of being worried sick about him, I hardly ever saw him for more than a week at a time, until he was discharged a couple of years later.
Came home and we had to get to know each other all over again.
Fall in love all over again.
All while raising a new baby.
Believe me, that was not what I had imagined for myself as a young girl.
And at times it felt like the dream had died.
Took me a while to realize it was just simply replaced by something stronger and better.
Now, Henry and I didn't have the fate of our country on our hands, just the future of our family, and even that, at times, felt overwhelming.
I can't imagine the kind of pressure that you feel.
But now's the time to put aside your personal anguish, and focus on what brought you together in the first place, your incredible, bold vision for ending your country's half-century of suffering.
I'm asking you to reach inside and find the strength, and take the lead again.
I'm asking you to trust that, behind the dream, is something more important.
We've talked it over, and no matter what happens between us, we want this truce to succeed.
Sí, for the good of Colombia.
ELIZABETH: The deal is already worked out.
All you have to do is put aside your differences and honor it.
I fear it's too late.
There are too many old grievances.
Too much blood has been shed.
Sometimes I think the only thing you two will agree on is that you won't agree on anything.
You make it sound so simple, but it's not.
Congress still has to approve the treaty, and now support is lagging.
JUAN-LUIS: No.
They'll approve it if you stand by it.
Put your weight behind it.
Sole and I are still going to.
MATEO: You and Soledad are young.
You don't understand the world the way we do.
ELIZABETH: I think they understand something more important.
They understand how it can be.
That's why they'll change it.
DALTON: You two have been fighting this war your entire lives.
Now you're so entrenched, you can't even see that there's something better waiting on the other side of the conflict.
But your children can see it.
They just need your help to make it real.
JUAN-LUIS: Mamá, don't give up on us.
Please, Papá.
All right, mijo.
We'll try.
(pounding on door) Ma'am, you done did a terrible thing to me.
WOMAN: Oh? MAN: You made me glad I ain't in Texas.
(woman laughs) Who is it? FBI, open the door.
MAN: Every time I look at you, I say to myself What's going on? Ms.
Grant, we have a warrant to search the premises.
Search for what? That's classified.
And I'm gonna need you to come with me.
I have security clearance.
Nevertheless, I need you to come with me.
HENRY: What happened? Leaders just busted in, and dragged the three new recruits out of bed.
They're talking about a cleansing ritual, a-a baptism? Looks like they're taking them into some kind of a bunker.
WAYNE: Gentlemen, you have asked to join our ranks, and you have been found worthy.
It is time for you to declare your servitude to our great cause.
LANCE: Samuel.
Step forward to be baptized.
On your knees.
Why are they restraining him? WAYNE: Samuel, do you accept Him into your heart? I do.
Are you ready to be baptized and reborn? I am.
"I indeed baptize you with water "unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier "than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: "he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, - and with fire.
" - They're not letting him up.
Let him go! You're HENRY: That's how they prove their loyalty.
Being willing to die.
Praise God, Samuel.
LANCE: You are risen! He has seen fit to grant you new life.
Ryan.
Come forward.
No.
Get out of there.
(gasping) LANCE: Do you accept Him into your heart? I do.
- WAYNE: Are you ready to be baptized - No.
and reborn? I am.
No, no, no.
(alarm buzzes) - (sighs) - Thank God.
Daisy, I'm so sorry.
- Okay.
- Ma'am, with all due respect, what the hell is going on? I just got read in a few minutes ago.
Kevin Park.
His real name was Joseph Garcia.
What? That's insane.
How do you get a job at the State Department under a false identity? No, he-he didn't work for the State Department.
He was a CIA operative.
He was using his position in our offices as cover for a highly classified investigation.
What what kind of classified investigation? I don't get it.
They couldn't really tell me any more than that.
(sighs) But, Daisy, they did tell me the coroner's report came back and he didn't die of natural causes.
It was cyanide poisoning.
Wait.
They think he killed himself? No.
They think he was murdered.
