Magnum, P.I. (1980) s07e10 Episode Script

Kapu

Jump! Do you know who you are? I can't remember.
She already thinks she's in love with you.
She saw him! If she just comes back with me and identifies him No! She cannot go back with you! I want to know why you're keeping me here! You're not well enough to go back! Hey, Mano! Let me help you with those.
Gee, what took you so long? Man! Big waves or what? Come on.
Hey, careful with that.
Here, hand it to me.
I am not trying to duck out on you.
You knew I had to deliver this summons.
I'm just having a little trouble finding this guy Sutherland.
We've been talking about my cousin Rita coming out here for the last three weeks.
You promised to go to dinner with us.
Did T.
C.
Say something about her? No, nobody said anything.
'Cause all of a sudden, you're acting real strange.
Rick.
And don't deny it, Thomas.
You've been avoiding me ever since Rita got in! Rick Rick, if you'll just listen.
The guy has been one step ahead of me all day, but I found out that he's chartered a boat for the Big Island at 6:00.
He isn't coming? He's coming, he's coming.
I'll hand him the summons as he boards the boat and I'll meet you at the restaurant at 7:00.
Hey, you got no right to be there! Get out of here! This is my corner! Who's that? It's nothing.
Ow! Now, look, lady! You've got another date! No, I don't Thomas, I can hear you talking to her.
Oh! Not perfume! Well, thanks a lot for taking commitment and friendship so seriously! No! Wait, Rick! Don't hang up Now, look, lady You can't go around hitting people just because Never mind.
Sorry.
Nick! Nick Sutherland? I'm Thomas Thomas Magnum, Future Fidelity Insurance.
Wait! No, don't.
No, I got a date! Come on! Come on! Jump! I felt calm, almost detached, with no concerns about where I was, how I'd gotten there, the fact that I was floating, not walking.
And the darkness.
Not the kind of darkness you see when you close your eyes or turn out the lights.
This was more like a total absence of light, with not even so much as a reflection in any direction.
Whatever this place was, I knew I didn't want to stay there.
Where is he? Just said he was on a case and needed me to bring the car home.
That's all I know.
After he promised Agatha that he would be my assistant at the museum while I conduct the tour in her absence, after he gave his word, am I to understand that he hasn't even had the decency to Will you kindly hand over Magnum's keys? Um I can't.
It's hot-wired.
Gotta go, Higgins.
I promised my cousin Rita a helicopter tour of the Islands.
See you later.
Thomas is going to think that somebody stole the Ferrari.
Somebody did, and it serves him right.
I don't see why you had to go and steal his car.
We held dinner for four hours at Luau Louie's because he promised to show up.
Nobody, but nobody, stands up my cousin Rita.
Oh, Ricky.
Even if he did have a beautiful date.
Are you sure that's why he didn't show up? Yeah, positive.
Boy, when he goes to pick that Ferrari up and finds it gone I would love to see the look on his face! The darkness was receding, but it was being replaced with a kind of emotional turbulence I had never known.
A growing terror that I had somehow been thrust into great danger.
Well! You can open your eyes! I'm thirsty.
You've been away from us for two days.
We weren't sure you were coming back.
Where? Back where? You try to get some food in you.
You have to start building your strength.
There was a girl.
What girl? There was a girl.
I was swimming with With a girl, and I It got dark.
Oh, you were dreaming.
No, I saw her.
You saw Mano, who brought you here in his canoe.
You hurt your head.
She's in trouble.
What kind of trouble? I don't know.
I can't remember.
What do you remember? Do you know who you are? My name's Thomas Magnum.
I'm a private investigator.
I was, uh, going to dinner with Rick and his cousin, Rita.
And You've had a terrible accident, and your mind doesn't want to remember it.
You have to be careful swimming around the coral.
It can be very dangerous.
You try to eat.
You'll remember what you need to, when you're better.
You are gonna love this place.
It's fantastic.
What could this museum possibly have that we don't have in Chicago? Jonathan Quayle Higgins.
And I will be your tour guide for the next 35 minutes.
Higgins! Higgins, I gotta talk to you.
I'm busy.
Look, it's important.
Give me two minutes.
Please.
If you will all move on to the tattoo display area Tattoos? I'll join you there.
Have you seen Thomas lately? No! Neither have I.
And neither has T.
C.
And I'm quite certain that not a single person in my tour group has, either.
Fortunately, he is not the highlight of their tour.
Now, if you will excuse me, I am behind schedule.
Look, Higgins, this is important.
I'm serious.
I know Thomas disappears occasionally without telling anybody where he's going.
A practice I would like to encourage.
But this is different! Look, he was supposed to have dinner with us a couple of nights ago.
When I say "us," I mean me and my cousin Rita.
When he didn't show up, I went and found the Ferrari and I took it home, as kind of a joke to teach him a lesson.
I haven't heard anything from him since then, and neither has anybody else.
Well, I'm quite certain that there's a reasonable explanation for Magnum's bizarre behavior.
There usually is.
However, if no one has heard from him by this evening Thanks.
I'll be in touch.
Now, if you'll excuse me Thank you.
Skin tattooing was looked upon as a test of courage as well as a rite of passage.
Let's go.
In a minute.
This is interesting.
These tools were used to puncture the skin and insert the dye.
A tapa cloth was used to wipe away the blood and excess pigment.
It was quite painful, and had to be endured without a sound.
And of course, without benefit of anesthetics.
Let's move on to the display of war weapons.
The darkness had rolled back enough for me to get a look at where I was.
And as I looked around, it almost seemed as if I'd been transported back in time I knew that was impossible.
I just didn't know what other explanation there could be.
Yet.
But I would get one.
Excuse me, is there a telephone around here? I guess you're the man I need to talk to.
You are Mano, aren't you? I understand you're the one who brought me here.
You and the girl.
I haven't seen her around here.
Mind if I sit down? It's funny.
I don't have any memory of being hurt.
Of course, I don't have any memory of swimming in my dinner clothes, either.
Doesn't that strike you as a little odd? Is it just my imagination or are we having a little trouble communicating here? What do you want? I'd like to use a telephone, if you could tell me where one is.
There are no telephones on this island.
There's no telephones, no radios, no televisions, no burglary, no drugs Well, I'm not going to argue with you about drugs or crime.
I just want to leave.
If you brought me here in a canoe, you should be able to take me back in one.
I can even help you.
I've got a little experience in channel crossing.
You're not going anywhere.
Not in your condition.
I'm much better.
I'm fine.
You're not fine.
You're going back to bed.
And you'll get up when I tell you to get up.
Come on.
I can manage.
Nice talking to you.
Somewhere, way far in the back of my mind, I knew where I was, and why.
But I couldn't bring it around in front of me where I could see it.
And the harder I tried, the more it slipped away from me.
Almost as if this village itself was draining away part of my memory, along with my strength.
Was there a girl? Or was she only a part of my disturbing dreams? Had she brought me here? Or had I come on my own? I knew if I was going to find out what had happened, I was going to have to leave this place, with help, or without.
The feeling of terror intensified and then subsided, like a wave breaking on shore, or a very bad fever.
Maybe it was the effort of trying to escape.
Or maybe it was the ocean air.
Or maybe it was just the passing of another day.
But the cloud that had been sitting over my memory seemed to be lifting a little.
I began to remember how I'd gotten here.
And I was almost certain I knew where I was.
What are you doing out of bed? Cleaning up.
I mean, if I'm going to be staying on Kapu, the least I can do is look presentable.
Try and fit in.
Strangers are forbidden here, aren't they? I'm glad to see you're feeling so much better.
I hope your appetite has also returned.
A little rest, bit of food, and you'll soon be strong enough to be up and around.
What's going on? Makahiki Luau.
End of harvest.
We take all our goods into the city, and then Celebrate? Yes.
Well, I guess I'll go see what everybody's doing.
Maybe after you eat.
I'm not really hungry, thanks.
You like to do things your own way.
Yeah, I used to drive my mom nuts, too.
Looks like a beautiful day.
We need more stones for these Kapu.
The forbidden island.
A place fiercely protected by a group of Hawaiians who no longer welcome strangers to their land.
I wondered how long they would tolerate me here.
I can't wait to show Auntie Luka and Mommy these shells.
I'm sorry.
I thought you were someone else.
Sorry.
Probably take more than one man to drag that down to the ocean from here.
You people sure are going to a lot of trouble to keep me from leaving.
Any particular reason, or you just like having me around? You know, the thought occurred to me that this might have something to do with that girl.
You know, the one that everybody says doesn't exist? I have a theory about that.
Wanna hear it? Good! The only thing that I can figure is, she was running away from home.
Maybe wanted to see what the real world was like.
Only her family wouldn't let her.
Maybe you wouldn't let her go.
She wasn't running from anybody.
And now you're keeping her a prisoner here because she went to an outsider for help.
Mano! Stop it! Stop fighting! I told you we never should have brought him back! Stop it! We should have just left him! We'll talk about this later! We'd be better off if he was dead! Mano! Why can't you leave well enough alone? I want to know why you're keeping me here! No one's keeping you here! You're not well enough to go back! That's my decision! I don't want your death on my conscience.
When you're well enough, someone will take you back.
Why won't you let me talk to the girl? If you're feeling so frisky, why don't you do something to help? With the 'Aha 'Aina! Luau! Ricky, you told me Hawaii had a slower pace than Chicago.
All we've been doing is running everywhere we've gone.
Now, what I would like to do is walk.
Walk into a restaurant, and have a nice, leisurely lunch.
Well, we've just arrived at Malia's.
It's one of the best restaurants in town.
Now look, I gotta meet a friend of mine.
I'll be five or ten minutes at the most.
Rita, go.
Ricky! Come on Go.
Go.
Go.
Thanks for coming into town, Ice Pick.
Oh, forget it.
I had business in town anyway.
You see that courtyard over there? Yeah, what about it? That's where Nick Sutherland got hit, two days ago.
Mr.
Sutherland took some money that didn't belong to him.
And the man it belonged to, his employer, he hired a guy to even the books.
Norm Vogel.
He picked up the contract.
He's a career soldier, a real pro.
Only this time, the job went bad.
There were witnesses.
Thomas? And a little Hawaiian girl.
Sutherland Sutherland Thomas mentioned a guy by that name.
He said he had to serve him a summons, but he was having a hard time finding him.
Well, I hope they have a hard time finding Magnum, 'cause if they don't Can't you call these guys off, Ice Pick? Okay, okay.
Never hurts to ask.
Does it ever occur to you that you're always having to bail your friend Magnum out of trouble? Not always.
Well, I think you ought to consider hanging around with a better class of friends.
Thomas is okay.
Thanks, Ice Pick.
I've looked everywhere for her You were supposed to watch her! No! Don't go! Don't.
I'm not going to hurt you.
I just want to know who you are.
I knew you were here.
The headaches won't last long.
What? I have to go.
If they find us together No! Wait! I just want to know what's going on.
Luka.
Uncle Mano.
They They've been putting something in my food, haven't they? Are they trying to poison me? No! No, just a little la'au moe.
To keep your mind clouded.
So you wouldn't remember.
Remember what? But I wanted you to remember.
I wanted you to remember me.
My uncle said you should forget all about me, but I didn't want you to.
I made this for you.
The shells are good luck.
You can't find them anywhere in the world except on this island.
The shells.
They scattered everywhere.
All over the courtyard.
You saw him.
The man who did the shooting.
Come on.
I can't go with you.
My uncle will be very angry.
We've got bigger problems than that! You're looking for us.
Did you really think if I couldn't remember anything about the shooting that they'd leave you alone? She didn't tell me! She didn't have to.
How long did you plan on keeping me drugged up? The rest of my life? If that's what it took.
Hey, besides it was you that brought the trouble to us.
You should be grateful to her that she nursed you and kept you alive.
But, Uncle, he saved my life! Yeah, because you wandered into his world.
He's trouble! We should have just left him with his own kind.
That wouldn't have stopped them from coming after Alea! If you didn't go back, they wouldn't know where to find her.
How long do you think before they find out where those shells come from? Luka says they won't.
They haven't yet.
She saw him! If she just comes back with me and identifies him No! She cannot go back with you! We can't keep her safe there! You can't keep her safe here! Look, in the morning, we'll give you a canoe, you can go back.
Alone! They probably don't even know about this necklace.
You can't count on that.
Mr.
Magnum.
Mr.
Magnum? It was a hastily conceived plan.
We were just trying to do what we thought best.
Please, try to understand.
Alea is young.
She's impressionable.
She already thinks she's in love with you.
I didn't want her to get hurt, by anybody.
I was trying to protect her myself.
I don't think we've seen the last of them.
Come on, T.
C.
, open her up.
I'm trying to get us to Kapu, not to the bottom of the Kauai Channel.
So just leave the driving to me, okay? I still don't understand what makes you so sure that Magnum is actually on the island of Kapu.
You know as well as I do that outsiders are forbidden there.
Ice Pick said that Magnum was with a young Hawaiian girl when that guy Sutherland got hit.
Maybe there's a tail wind up there.
A young Hawaiian girl could live anywhere! There is no tail wind, Rick.
We are going as fast as we are going to go.
I know that.
But I got an inside tip from some guy on the docks that does business with some of the traders on the island of Kapu.
And they say that there's a hush-hush deal going down over there.
How on Earth could you possibly know if there's a tail wind at a higher altitude or not? You add two and two, and it sounds real likely that the hush-hush deal is Thomas.
T.
C.
Says there's no tail wind? There's no tail wind.
I think she's in love! With the stranger? Don't.
Not if you want to live.
Now, just put the weapon down and move away from it.
Alealea! Alealea! Alea? You're going to go back.
You knew I was.
I wish I wish I didn't love you.
One day One day you'll understand.
What kind of love I'm feeling now? Makua Wahine Luka already told me that.
She's right.
For now, maybe.
I think one day, I will see you again.
You have to take the canoe back? Unfinished business.
Thank you, Mr.
Magnum, and thank your friends.
