Manifest (2018) s03e01 Episode Script

Tailfin

[ People screaming .]
Previously on "Manifest" Daly: Terribly sorry, folks.
That was not on the radar.
You've all been missing, presumed dead, for 5 1/2 years.
It's all connected.
The ability to see and hear what's going to happen? That's an incredibly powerful weapon -- for the military, for intelligence.
Vance: "Kathryn Fitz.
Psychological warfare specialist, Major General.
" Please, come in.
Saanvi: She took my work.
She took everything.
I'm sorry, Dr.
Bahl, but I'm afraid we have to ask you to leave.
I am not hiding from her.
I am coming after her.
[ Coughs .]
Are you having trouble breathing? You have 90 seconds to tell me how to save Zeke, or it will be too late to save yourself.
[ Gasps deeply .]
Zeke, what is this? Frostbite.
I may be freezing to death.
Ben: The exact amount of time he was gone is the same exact amount of time he was alive again.
Are you saying you have some kind of expiration date? Will you marry me, Michaela? You may kiss the bride.
I gotta go.
Tell her I'm sorry.
Hands where I can see them! Down on the ground! The pain I'll bring down on you, a holy vengeance like nothing you've ever seen.
Drop your weapon! What did I tell you?! [ Thunder crashes .]
[ Gasps .]
[ Grunts .]
Zeke! Hey.
I'm still alive, right?[ Laughing .]
Yeah.
We've searched every inch of this lake.
There are no bodies.
[ Speaking Spanish .]
[ Upbeat Latin music plays .]
[ Indistinct conversations .]
[ Speaking Spanish .]
[ Sea gulls squawking .]
[ Horn blowing .]
[ Muffled screams.]
[ Loud screeching .]
[ Breathing heavily .]
[ Engines roaring .]
[ Line ringing, keypad beeps .]
Hey, pal.
You had that, too, didn't you? You okay? The light was so bright, we were all screaming Yeah.
Scared me too.
We'll handle it.
I saw your Aunt Mick in there, I wonder if she -- [ Cellphone ringing .]
She did.
Lemme guess.
We all just saw that? Who was that woman? I couldn't make her out.
Me either.
Cal? [ Sighs .]
Whoever it is, I'm pretty sure what triggered the Calling.
Found the boat.
Yes! Just like my sketch? Just like it.
And? What was on the boat? Nothing unusual.
That boat found something, Dad.
Something about 828.
I know it.
I believe you, bud.
Well, whatever was on that boat, it must've been important.
I haven't had a Calling that intense in months.
Yeah, agreed.
Feels like all three of us have a part to play.
As for me boat's barely tied up.
Owners can't be gone too long.
Ben, just be careful, okay? I -- You're in a dangerous place still, even if the Callings brought you there.
Will do.
[ Keypad beeps .]
[ Waves crashing .]
Ben and Cal, too? They're just as floored by it as I am.
I mean, they don't -- they don't know who that woman is.
I mean, for a stranger to show up in our heads after all this time, in a Calling that kicked my ass God.
I wish I could help.
I never thought I'd say I miss the Callings, but at least then I could tell you --No.
No, no, no.
No buts.
You are alive.
And you are here with me.
If surviving the Death Date meant saying goodbye to the Callings forever, then sign me up.
I mean, sign us all up.
Believe me, I couldn't be more grateful.
I didn't think I'd live much beyond our wedding night, let alone get to take the most epic trip in honeymoon history.
[ Breathes deeply .]
Think the universe is telling us to pack it up.
To help this woman? [ Sighs .]
The Callings are a blessing in that they can save our lives, but hell if they are not a curse, as well.
I can't miss even one.
Not if I want to grow old with you.
Oh, you're gonna grow ancient with me.
Oh! Okay.
I like that.
Me too.
[ Laughs .]
[ Rumbling, heavy breathing .]
[ Door creaks in distance .]
[ Footsteps approaching .]
[ Gasps, sniffles .]
[ Door creaks .]
[ Gasps .]
Olive: Choo-choo! Here it comes Don't understand why I haven't heard from your dad.
I'm dying for an update here.
How are you so good at that? It's not like you ever fed your brother.
Not to burst your bubble, but it's not rocket science.
What? [ Chuckles .]
Nothing.
I just I'm just proud of you.
Back to your brisket.
[ Both laugh .]
No.
I'm serious.
Babe, you've had a hard year.
So the fact that you're so together is a big deal.
[ Sighs .]
Yeah.
Thanks to you.
For helping me.
Anytime.
[ Footsteps approaching .]
Hey, babe.
You okay? Someone had a Calling? Not just me.
Dad and Auntie Mick, too.
You spoke to your dad? How is he? He's been radio silent all day.
Has he found what you guys have been looking for? Not yet.
But he thinks he's really close.
Honey what was the Calling? What happened in it? We were about to die.
Saanvi: Okay, kiddo.
Open real wide.
Aaaah.
Aaaah.
Good job.
It's looking pretty raw in there.
She ever have strep before? Last winter.
And the winter before that.
Ah! Repeat customer.
I'll go get a test.
I have a very important question for you.
You want a lollipop now, or later? Now.
[ Chuckling .]
Now? Okay.
I'll be right back.
[ Keypad beeping .]
[ Door buzzes .]
Alonzo.
I know you said you'd update me, but it's been awhile, so Heard anything from Cuba? When I do I'll update you.
Just checking.
[ Plastic crinkles .]
Just have a little faith.
It's gonna work out.
[ Sighs .]
[ Speaking Spanish .]
No.
No, no, no, no, no.
[ Indistinct conversations .]
[ Keys jingling .]
[ Metal clangs .]
[ Doors close .]
[ Dramatic music playing .]
My God.
But everyone saw that plane land in New York.
How does this tailfin end up a thousand miles from shore? [ Gasps .]
[ Muffled screams .]
Aah! [ Loud screeching .]
[ Grunts .]
Man: [ Speaking Spanish .]
Morning, Bill.
Lieutenant.
Woman: Where is Michaela Stone? Look, I'm sure you're a very nice person.
And I would know, 'cause I'm a very nice person.
But I just can't divulge that kind of information about Detective Stone.
Y-You don't understand.
I need to speak with her.
Well, I don't think she can help you.
But I can redirect your concern to the precinct where your mom lives? Or the FBI? [ Sighs .]
I've been to both.
No one would help me.
Just tell me when Detective Stone gets back, and I'll come back then.
I can't tell you that.
Now, I'm sorry, but I really need to get back to work.
[ Papers rustling .]
[ Keys clacking .]
Hey.
What was that about? Missing person.
She can't get a hold of her mom, and she wants to talk to Michaela.
I feel for her, but it's not our area.
Why's she asking for Michaela? Oh, she thinks the 828 cop can help.
People will believe anything when they're desperate.
What'd you see?! Uh, Dad and Mick having a complete freak-out.
But there was another lady, too.
I think from the plane.
Okay, break it down.
Old? Young? Old.
Hair color? Eyes? Medium.
Medium? Medium, that's -- That's not an option.
[ Cellphone ringing .]
Oh! Auntie Mick.
I bet she saw the same person.
Please, God.
Hey, I'm trying to reach your dad, but I can't seem to get a hold of him.
Me too! I saw her better this time.
We're checking the board.
Let her talk.
Hey, Ol.
Um, in our Calling, there was a woman.
She had light skin, auburn hair.
I think she was a passenger.
No No No Hair is different, but No, no, no.
That's her.
That's her.
Angelina Meyer.
You said she was old.
Compared to me.
Okay.
Meyer, Angelina No reply to email, no reply to call.
He never talked to her.
But there should be more.
Um, bio stuff.
Yeah.
Uh, born Long Island, New York, 1990.
Current whereabouts unknown.
Um, parents own homes in Sun Valley, Idaho, and Tamarindo, Costa Rica.
Wow.
The Callings really do follow us wherever we go.
Or tell us where we need to be.
How far is Tamarindo? Two-hour drive.
Hey, nice work, you guys.
We'll call you back.
Try and reach your dad, okay? [ Keypad beeps .]
Angelina Meyer She seemed like she was really in danger.
And so did you.
And Ben and Cal.
True, but Either way, she needs us.
I just -- I know it.
I think she needs you.
But where you lead, I will follow.
Let's go.
Okay.
[ Groaning .]
[ Men conversing in Spanish .]
[ Whispering .]
No, no, no, no.
Stay put.
I'm fine.
Bleeding, but I'm fine.
I sent you in alone to not spook the fisherman, and instead you spooked me.
It's the tailfin, Vance.
The literal tailfin from 828.
Damn.
Tell me about it.
I don't know what just happened, but I'm okay.
I'm fine.
I got this.
For the record, you got a crayon drawing from a 12-year-old boy.
I got us datamining and signals intelligence capabilities verifying a suspicious extraction from the ocean, and well, not to pile on, but I also got us an airplane.
[ Beeping .]
Your point being? That I'm running this operation, so if you feel in over your head, I need to know.
But I am on the 10-yard line right now.
Just let me pay their finder's fee and be on my way.
[ Sighs .]
[ All murmuring .]
[ Speaking Spanish .]
[ Keypad beeps .]
Kenneth: When that plane disappeared, we died a little along with our girl.
We found grief support at our church, thankfully.
That helped ease the pain, but there are no words for that heartbreak.
My mom died with that heartbreak.
A year before we returned.
Oh, how awful.
I'm so sorry We were more blessed.
Orat least I thought we were.
Maybe you could tell us about how she was when she came back.
Distant.
Closed off.
She no longer carried God's light.
We couldn't connect with her.
My mom had some tough times with me.
It's hard to help someone when they're not ready to be helped.
It was more than that She wasn't the same.
She was losing her mind.
The more we tried to help, tried to pray with her, the more she pulled away.
One day, she packed up, passport and all, and left.
We think back to New York.
That's where she grew up.
But, uh it's been months, and no word.
Folks I think Angelina might be in danger.
How c-c- Are you in touch with her? No.
Um I can't explain.
But I canfind her.
[ Speaking Spanish .]
We got a problem.
[ Door opening .]
Wh-- [ Speaking Spanish .]
American? Sí.
Uh, yes.
Yes.
What are you doing in Cuba, Mister America? Seeing the sights.
I-It's a beautiful country.
In fact, my new friends over there were about to take me out on their boat.
Mm.
Very nice.
But before you go I want you to touch that tailfin again.
Okay, so, according to passport control, Angelina never reentered the U.
S.
after going to Costa Rica.
Zeke: Weird.
Her parents said she went back to New York.
Maybe she wanted her parents to think that she went far away so they wouldn't keep looking for her.
So, intel was able to run Angelina's social-media history and found a couple deleted accounts.
Looks like she had a friend down in Costa Rica back in the day.
Um, Elena Rojas.
God bless the internet.
Uh, get me a phone number? On it.
Hey, guys.
Fun trip? Fun while it lasted.
[ Chuckles .]
Okay.
Talk soon.
Yeah, good find.
You know, you -- you coulda told her.
Eh, it's faster this way.
It's okay to have feelings about your ex being on her honeymoon.
[ Chuckles .]
No feelings, Drea.
I'm good.
I mean, you look great, pal.
Taller, stronger.
100% healthy.
I'm hungry all the time.
[ Laughs .]
Well, that's called puberty.
Look, you're so sweet to bring him to me, but it would be so much more convenient for you to switch doctors to someone closer to Queens -- and someone with hospital privileges.
Saanvi.
You saved his life.
And you're the only doctor in the universe who really understands him, inside and out.
What about those three shadows you kept seeing? Still happening? But I did have a Calling with my dad -- and Auntie Mick, too.
It started off small, but then it went off the charts.
That's actually when we lost contact.
Cal talked to Mick, but we haven't been able to reach Ben.
I'm a little concerned.
[ Quietly .]
Yeah.
Do you have a way to get in touch? [ Cellphone ringing .]
A little busy over here.
Whole party over here.
I'm with Grace and Cal.
They can't reach Ben.
Everything okay? Yeah.
We found what we came for.
In fact, I'm about to meet up with him any second now.
What did you find? According to your husband, Flight 828's tailfin.
Yeah.
That's how I felt.
Alright, gotta go.
Thank you.
[ Call disconnects .]
Remind me not to play poker with you.
What'd you expect me to tell them? "Ben's facing down three Cuban cops at the moment, please hold"? We going in? No.
Once we go in, it becomes a deal.
We hang back for now.
Alright, smooth talker.
Wrap it up.
I-I'm sorry.
I'm still not following.
I saw what you did.
When you touched the tail, hmm? [ Stammers .]
Do it again.
[ TV turns off .]
Your dad's okay.
[ Sighing .]
Okay.
He thinks they found a piece of the plane.
[ Chuckles .]
Imagine saying that sentence out loud two years ago.
There's always another shoe to drop around here.
You'd think we would have run out of shoes by now.
We need to go clean out my room.
Why? Dad's bringing someone home to stay over.
Someone who needs us.
Are you sure about that, honey? There goes another shoe.
[ Chuckles .]
We hung out a bit after the plane came back.
I tried having dinner over there a few times, but her parents were still so clingy.
When was the last time you saw her? A few months ago.
I figured she went back to New York.
She always talked about going.
What else? I don't know how to explain it She was distracted, almost paranoid, looking over her shoulder like she was being followed.
Her parents didn't mention that.
They're so strict and religious.
I'm sure she was nervous to tell them.
Did she ever talk about being followed or give you any details? Look, it's important to tell us anything that you might know, because she didn't go back to New York, Elena.
She's still somewhere in Costa Rica.
That's seriously all I know.
You don't think someone really was after her? I don't know.
Look, if you, um, hear or think of anything, you have my number, okay? So, was she really being followed? Or was she just having a Calling? Or option number three: the Calling was trying to warn her about something.
[ Breathing shakily .]
[ Banging .]
[ Footsteps approaching .]
[ Banging .]
[ Sighs .]
[ Crying .]
Do it again.
Now! Alright! Alright! Alright.
Mm.
[ Sighs .]
[ Scoffs .]
So what did I see? Uh, like I said.
Some sort of electrical charge.
Lucky for me I wasn't barbecued to a crisp.
[ Feedback squeals .]
Ugh! Get on the ground!Alright! Alright! Alright.
Who are you? Huh?! Who do you work for?![ Door opening .]
[ Man grunts, body thuds .]
[ Man grunts .]
You don't know me.
And trust me -- you don't want to.
Drop your weapon, please.
I'm with them.
Well, I'll be damned.
You don't really think that's the I know.
Plane's circling offshore below the radar line.
Told him we should pull into the airstrip in 20.
Make it 15! Doesn't take a Houdini to get out of those zip-ties.
When I touched it, it blew me back, Vance.
It launched me.
Still could be a duplicate.
Come on.
It's the actual tailfin from 828.
How? You came home in that plane.
Right.
And then I watched that plane explode.
Then how, Vance after all these years, does an 1,800-pound tailfin dredge up from the bottom of the ocean? Ben, my whole career has been about looking at how the facts add up, what are they trying to tell me.
I lasted this long simply because I would not let go of that mantra -- how do the facts add up? And then your flight returned.
And nothing added up.
Cost me almost everything to try to makeit all add up, but with that tailfin, we may be on the cusp of finally understanding the biggest mystery that's ever transpired in human history.
I'm glad you're on our side.
Always.
Oh.
Didn't know you were back.
They were talking to Elena.
We didn't realize Angelina had a friend right here in Costa Rica.
Does it matter? She doesn't know where Angelina is, either.
I'm sorry to get hung up on this.
There's just something I'm not quite getting -- if Angelina lived here with you and she was so afraid, wouldn't she have mentioned something to you? I-I don't know -- someone following her, a stalker -- There was no damn stalker.
There was no anything.
It was all coming from within her.
[ Exhales heavily .]
[ Loud screeching .]
[ Crying .]
[ Breathing heavily .]
You okay? Uh Sorry.
I just got really dizzy.
[ Inhales sharply .]
Do you mind if I, uh, use your bathroom? Of course.
Just Just through here.
There she is! Nice upgrade from the puddle-jumper that got us over here.
Can't exactly Uber home a tailfin.
Boss.
We got company.
Gun it! It's just through here.
Ah.
Don't tell me you're also like them.
Unh! Noelle! Noelle! Oh! We've got a good lead on them! Not enough! Stop the truck! Come on.
Vance, what are you doing? Making sure you get home.
Get this to my wife.
Vance, we don't have to do this! We can all make it to the plane! It doesn't matter.
It's DGI.
Intelligence.
They want the tailfin -- they'll shoot us out of the sky for it.
This is the only way.
Vance, what about you? Listen to me.
Listen.
You're gonna want to do something to help me.
It's in your nature.
Do not.
I'll handle it.
Vance! Damn it! Get out of the truck! [ Engine starts .]
[ Grunts .]
Vance! Vance! [ Muffled scream .]
[ Screeching .]
[ Sobbing .]
Noelle: I'm calling an ambulance.
Kenneth: No, don't.
We have no choice.
[ Engines revving .]
[ Tires screeching .]
[ Screeching .]
Unh! [ Screeching .]
[ Grunting .]
[ Tires squealing .]
[ Speaking Spanish .]
[ Breathing heavily .]
[ Gasps .]
[ Knife clatters .]
[ Sobs .]
It's okay.
It's okay.
[ Gasping, crying .]
[ Sirens wailing in distance .]
Hey.
[ Crying .]
Are you sure you don't want to go to the hospital and get checked out? [ Sniffles .]
You need to know that you're not possessed.
The voices in your head, the visions -- they're far from a curse.
No matter what your parents believe.
My mom -- she raised me religiously, too.
I'm sure you know Romans 8:28.
You're one of the Called So am I.
Actually, so are a lot of us from 828.
Yeah.
That's right.
I was on that flight.
[ Clicks tongue .]
5A.
24D.
[ Door opens .]
Wasn't sure what you were into.
So I got a few of everything.
It was pork rinds for me.
But I respect the hell out of a Bugles lover.
Nice assist on the "fake Calling flop" back there.
How'd you know I needed help? I don't know.
I justfelt it.
The American Consulate's gonna close soon, so we should get going.
I told the police we'd bring Angelina to report her parents.
No! I just want to get out of here.
With you.
Please.
I don't want to be alone with this anymore.
Believe me, if you're hanging with us, you can't throw a stick without hitting somebody who has Callings.
Okay.
So you're coming with us.
Uh, I don't want to rain on the parade here, but we don't have any paperwork for Angelina.
No passport, no license -- and you're already handling it, aren't you? Of course I am.
Of course you are.
Her name is Angelina Meyer.
M-E-Y-E-R.
And it has to be confidential.
We might have an in with the ambassador.
That contact's a bit dry.
There's always shipping containers, but it's a hairy ride.
Hey, Mick.
I think I may have a better idea of who can help.
Is it someone we can trust? [ Computer pinging .]
More than anyone you know.
Thanks for the lift.
Glad to have one win today.
She okay? Yeah.
She will be with our help.
[ Plane rattling .]
So great being back on an airplane.
I'm totally cool with it.
[ Inhales sharply .]
Yeah.
Not panicked at all.
What year do you think it'll be when we land? [ Chuckling .]
Mnh.
[ Sighs .]
Still no Callings? Nah.
Still no nightmares? No.
Are you sure? Yeah.
Hi.
I'm Cal.
I've been waiting for you.
Didn't I see you in here today about -- I don't know -- 11 hours ago? Which is when I saw you come on shift.
Figured by now, Detective Mikami'd be gone, but you wouldn't.
You came here to see me? I know it looks crazy.
I've talked to a lot of people about my mom, so I've gotten used to being brushed off or treated like a crazy person.
But the way you looked at me was different.
Like you actually might care what I have to say.
I have a few minutes.
Uh my mom worked for the government.
What she did exactly, I don't know, but what I do know is that every time she went on a trip somewhere she couldn't reach out, she'd send me roses.
Three red roses meant she'd be gone three days.
Two yellow roses, two weeks.
And so on.
Last time we spoke was three months ago.
And I haven't gotten any roses.
The reason I keep coming here is because I think what happened to her is somehow related to Flight 828.
It felt like the focus of her work.
So I thought Detective Stone might help.
The DoD just keeps telling me everything is classified.
No other cop will give me the time of day.
Please, you're my last hope.
This is your mother? Yes.
Her name is Kathryn Fitz.
I admire your perseverance, Saanvi.
Truly remarkable.
Help me.
[ Gasping .]
[ Voice breaking .]
I'm sorry.
I sense a reluctance to be treated.
It is clear to me that there is more going on with you than you are sharing.
[ Crickets chirping .]
I still don't get it.
We were on that plane when it landed.
We still have our fingers, we have our toes, and so did that plane.
So how[sighs.]
does a piece of it end up at the bottom of an ocean? I have no idea But it did.
And I think it could change everything.
Okay, so, it got us to Angelina, but what do you mean by "change everything"? You and Cal had fractured pieces of the Calling, but I think I had the whole thing, and what I saw -- all of us screaming -- it ties back to my Calling from months ago, of the plane exploding in mid-air.
Mick I think the Calling is trying to tell us that we died on that flight.
[ Chuckles .]
No.
Ben.
Look, we're standing right here.
I mean, yes, something inexplicable is happening, but, no, come on.
That tailfin in Cuba is the tailfin from 828.
There's no other way it would've done this to my hand or put us into that Calling.
Again, that's not possible.
We watched that plane explode.
Right.
As if the plane itself had died.
A-And now it's back.
A piece of it, at least.
As if it [ Exhales sharply .]
As if it was resurrected.
And I think maybe we were, too.
Ben, the last time I checked, you barely believed in God.
I know.
I know, I know.
Butthe entire way I thought the world worked has been flipped upside down, Mick.
Maybe it's time I started believing.
Okay.
So, uh Resurrected? So then, what is happening? I guess, I mean Are we angels? Prophets? I mean, if God wants us back on Earth for what? I think we're about to find out.
I'm not sure we can give her what she needs.
Cal had a Calling she was coming, right? Yeah.
So you can stop worrying.
She's supposed to be here.
How long is Angelina staying? I don't know.
She'll stay as long as she needs to get back on her feet.
She's scared.
Yeah.
Well, with you, and your dad, and your Auntie Mick, she'll be protected.
You've got nothing to worry about.
You're not just worried about Angelina, are you? Hey.
Talk to me.
I'm not having the nightmares, but all of a sudden, I just feel like that again.
Feel like what? Like when I had the visions of the three shadows.
Like I did before.
When they were here.
[ Dramatic music plays .]
[ Gasping .]
