Mission Impossible (1966) s02e24 Episode Script

Trial by Fury

Good afternoon, Mr.
Phelps.
Manuel Delgado, the patron saint of his country's Freedom Party, recently was sent to prison by the totalitarian regime now in power.
To help Delgado continue to lead the resistance movement from behind bars, this man, Santos Cardoza, had himself arrested and imprisoned.
Needing freedom of action in order to act as liaison, Cardoza managed to become a trustee.
This has led to grave danger for him because the other convicts believe he is an informer and Cardoza cannot reveal the true reason for his actions.
Your mission, Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to expose the real informer and keep Cardoza alive so that he may continue to aid Delgado.
As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.
This recording will self-destruct in five seconds.
Good luck, Jim.
How does it look? Better than neon.
As you can see, under normal lighting it looks perfectly natural.
Cinnamon, Señor Juan Valesquez of the Red Cross will be waiting to pick you up.
He'll drive you to the prison camp.
You will arrive there the day after we arrive.
Now, that fits in perfectly with Juan's normal schedule, and he'll have everything all arranged.
Except for the gift box, which I will supply.
That's right.
Jim? If Delgado is isolated from the rest of the prisoners, how does he get his information to Cardoza? Well, Cardoza's made a point of being a model prisoner, so they've made him a trustee.
As a trustee, he has the run of the place, and of course the authorities don't know that he's a follower of Delgado.
I see.
Because he's a model prisoner, the other convicts suspect him as being the informer.
Exactly.
Now, I'm convinced that the real informer is in the maximum-security barracks.
So Barney, what we have to do is to give the real informer enough information to hang himself.
Now, Jim, wouldn't it be simpler just to get Delgado and Cardoza out? Yes, it would.
But in prison, Delgado is a living martyr symbol.
He holds the whole resistance movement together.
He doesn't want to escape.
No, I think they're both more effective where they are, behind bars.
Well, all I can say is, I hope the same thing holds true for us.
Your new home.
Out.
A difficult journey, huh? Soon you will have a nice cot to stretch out on for the next three years.
All right, march! All right, take off your clothes! What for? To get rid of the lice.
I ain't taking my clothes off.
I said take off your clothes! Spray them.
Put them in the hole for 24 hours.
That should cool them off.
Come.
With your permission, comandante.
I must have your signature for receipt of the new prisoners.
- Where is Lieutenant Flores? - He is on leave, sir.
Two of the new prisoners started a riot when we arrived.
I ordered them into the hole.
Good.
I suggest you keep an eye on them, sir.
They look like troublemakers.
We have special barracks for troublemakers.
You tell my sergeant to assign those men to Barrack G.
Yes, sir.
Excuse me, sir.
I understand that two other prisoners are being taken back to the city day after tomorrow.
With your approval, comandante, I would like to wait here and go back with them.
I do not like the mountain roads.
My aide will show you quarters.
You are hurt.
It's nothing.
A fight with new prisoners.
Someday, the people will know what you have done for them.
I have done nothing exceptional.
Except cause your own arrest, and bear this miserable place for so long.
As long as I can help get your words through to the people, it is not so bad.
Barney, did you get any sleep? Yeah, Jim.
You all right? Yeah, my back's still sore.
You? Sore.
Take them to Barracks G.
I'll get their prison clothes.
Rivera.
They didn't have to kill him.
What do you expect? It's Cardoza again.
Informing to the comandante, that pig! He will inform no longer.
We must see to it.
New fish, huh? Fresh from the hole.
How did you like it in there, huh? - You.
- What do you want? What are you in prison for? I brought some contraband across the border.
What did you bring? A little rum, that's all.
And you? What of you? I mind my own business.
Why don't you? Listen to the tough Americano.
Klaus.
I could break you each in two if I wanted to.
But I like what you did with the two guards outside.
- I do not feel so kind.
- Nor I.
No.
They do not know that we run the barracks.
Besides, they are new, unsure.
They are brothers.
They just spent time in the hole together.
But now they know that they do what we tell them to.
And if you make any trouble, you get your heads broken.
Johnson and Morales? Yeah? Your prison clothes.
Morales? Save them for yourself, amigo.
I am breaking out in the morning.
You fool! That man, Cardoza, he is an informer! The commandant will know your plans! Sergeant, would you tell the comandante that Señor Vales? - Comandante.
- Señor Valesquez.
May I introduce Señorita Bailey.
She is studying our methods.
How do you do, sir? I was not informed there was to be a woman.
Why should there be an objection? There is, but apparently, it is too late.
You wish to see Señor Delgado? - Yes, I would, and I would - I will send for him.
It's Cardoza's fault that man is dead.
He knows if you have a hole in your sock.
If Cardoza knows, the comandante knows.
And now this trustee causes the death of Rivera.
Tonight Tonight we get him.
What do you mean, "tonight we get him"? Bring him to the barracks.
- Then what? - Kill him.
Good.
They wish to speak with you.
Señor Delgado.
Please, be seated.
A few simple questions, señor.
Are you well fed? I am fed the prison fare.
And medical attention? When necessary.
Have you any complaints about your treatment? I complain about being here at all.
My arrest was illegal.
I was never charged, nor tried.
You are lucky to still be alive.
I suppose it is an annoyance to you.
I do as the regime tells me.
Which regime? The regime in power.
See, Delgado, they come and go.
But I remain forever.
Or until the people can free themselves.
And me.
Look at him.
He still talks like he has an army at his command.
Hey, Morales.
How do you plan to make your break? There are too many guards.
That is my business, amigo.
Morales, take me out of here with you.
Do not bother me, Señor Johnson.
It's worth money to you.
You're on your own.
Well, many have tried.
Anybody make it? Not since Cardoza came.
The commandant learns everything.
He only knows that I am breaking out.
He does not know how.
There are only a few ways out.
They will be watching.
Hey, I'll have that if you're through, huh? What do you do with it? Well, I like to work with the silver.
- Make the animals, huh? - Yeah.
Here they come.
- We can finally have you, huh, scum? - I have done nothing.
Tonight, Cardoza, you have the walk.
No, I insist I have done nothing to deserve this.
What's this about a walk? I thought you guys just wanted to get rid of him.
It is our way.
You will see.
- You will join in the pleasure.
- Take him to the walk.
He is ready.
Take your positions.
- Walk, traitor.
- Think of Rivera.
- Dead Rivera.
- Full of holes.
- Bullet holes.
- Informer.
- Traitor.
- Assassin.
Who told of Rivera? - Walk.
- Think of Rivera.
- Walk.
- Yes, you told them.
Walk.
What did you tell the comandante, huh? - Informer.
- Did you tell him Morales' plan? - Did you? - Are they waiting to kill him? I said nothing.
Walk.
- Liar.
- Walk.
- Traitor! - Walk.
- Assassin.
- Walk.
- You killed Rivera.
- Walk.
- Traitor.
- Walk.
- Think of Rivera.
- Walk.
- Traitor.
- Walk.
- Walk.
- Halt.
- Walk, walk.
- Informer.
- Walk.
- Walk.
- Traitor.
- Walk.
- You killed Rivera.
- Walk.
- Traitor.
- Walk.
- Traitor.
- Walk, walk.
- Walk.
- Walk, walk.
- Traitor.
- Walk, walk, walk.
- You killed Rivera.
- Stop! - Walk, walk, walk! - Think of Rivera.
Guards! The guards are coming, and the comandante.
Hey, look at that, huh? Hey! These people are from the Red Cross.
They will ask you questions.
You will answer them fully and honestly.
You may keep the gifts the lady will give you.
- Bring the presents.
- Bravo.
- Good evening, boys.
- Good evening, señorita.
Good evening, señorita.
I have a nice little package for each and every one of you from the Red Cross.
- This is for you.
- You bring me some books.
- That's good.
I like to read a lot.
- This is for you.
Oh, please.
Well, I'll put it here for you.
Don't forget where it is.
This is for you.
How long have you been here? All my life.
This is for you.
Tell me, what was your crime? I murdered a Red Cross lady.
Where is Klaus and Sperizzi? Where are they? Where are those men? They are in the shower, commandant, trying to wash off the filth of your establishment.
We told them it was useless.
Come, we inspect the shower room.
Hey, comandante.
It's a good evening for a shower, no? This is for you.
That's for you.
- That's for you.
- Thanks.
You're American, aren't you? That's right.
Tell me, did they allow you to contact the U.
S.
Consul? Listen, honey, the U.
S.
Wants to get rid of me more than these people do.
If you are quite ready? Yes, of course.
Excuse me.
Well, good night, boys.
- Good night, señorita.
- Good night.
Come back again.
Goodbye, señorita.
- Bye-bye! - Bye.
All right, now! - Now, get in.
- He's ready.
Take your positions.
How many others have you killed, huh? You take money, is that it? You sell your soul and all of us for money.
How much is a life worth? - Walk! - Morales' plan.
- Did you tell the plan? - No, I am not the one you seek.
- Walk! - Walk! - Walk.
- Then who is? I do not know.
- Walk, traitor.
- Think of Rivera.
- You told of Rivera.
- Walk.
- Dead Rivera.
- Walk, walk.
- Full of holes.
- Walk! - Bullet holes.
- Walk.
- Walk! - Walk! - All the guards, yes, you told them.
- Walk, walk.
- Traitor.
- Pig.
Walk.
You will walk! No.
You will walk! Walk, walk, walk! Walk, walk, walk! Walk, walk, walk! Walk, walk, walk! Walk, walk, walk! Walk, walk, walk, walk! And Señor Delgado's wife? Do you allow her to see him? Of course not.
Through her he could pass many messages.
Walk, walk, walk! Walk, walk, walk! Walk, walk, walk! Walk, walk! When did you start informing? I am no informer.
How much does the commandant pay you? - Nothing.
- How much? - Nothing.
- How much? - You told for free? - It gives you pleasure? - Try to keep him talking.
- Right.
I have done nothing.
What about me? Did you tell about me? No.
- I swear it.
- You liar! Wait.
- I believe him.
- How can you believe a man like that? But if what he says is true, if he has not told him, then my escape plan Your escape plan's dead, just like he's gonna be.
Hear that? Soon you will be dead.
Dead, dead, dead! - Dead, dead! - No! Let me make my break first.
He'll talk and we'll all end up in the hole.
No.
No, I will not talk.
He looks like a talker to me.
Who are you? What kind of a man are you, really? Only a man.
What did you do on the outside? I was a lawyer.
- Lawyer? - A Lawyer! - Your Honour, I object.
- Order in the court.
Sentence the man to 100 years, he did not pay my fee.
Lawyers are bigger thieves than we are, huh? What did they convict you of? - I stole.
- Oh, yes, it is a great story.
What he means is, it was a made-up story, and he was put here by the police to spy on us.
- Informer! - Liar! Liar! - Liar! - Assassin! - Assassin! - Liar! Traitor.
- Liar! - Traitor! - Informer! - You killed Rivera.
Come.
Excuse me.
Certainly.
Sergeant! Sergeant! Double the guards on the fence and check for tunnels.
There will be an escape attempt.
Probably tomorrow morning, but take no chances.
Instruct the men: Shoot to kill.
You are paid by the government! Confess it! - Confess it! - The government? This government? This is not a government.
It is a dictatorship.
Oh, you are not only an informer but a traitor as well.
Yes, that's right.
A traitor.
A traitor to tyranny.
A traitor to slavery.
He makes a speech.
- Let's elect him to a high post.
- And hang him from it! He talks like a politician, let him make a speech, huh? Speech, speech, speech! Speech, speech! Go ahead, speech.
So you will kill me and your blood lust will be satisfied.
Is Delgado given proper exercise? If he chooses.
With the other prisoners? No, he is always isolated from them.
Well, isn't that a little like solitary confinement? He is permitted to talk with the guards, a few of the trustees.
It is not solitary confinement.
He is simply removed from the thieves and murderers, señorita.
Fire! That was a foolish thing to do.
You're right.
I am sorry.
I was very careless.
All right, all right! What happens when I am dead and the real informer speaks to the comandante? You all go into the hole till you rot! Perhaps the leaders are hanged as well for murder.
You are the murderer! We'll hang you, Cardoza.
- You are the murderer.
- You, Cardoza.
Wait a minute! Wait a minute! Hey, now, wait a minute.
Wait.
Stop.
Wait a minute! Maybe he's got a point.
Suppose he's not the informer, but we kill him.
And tomorrow, the informer is still here among us.
No, look around you.
Now, what do you see? Murderers, thieves, the scum of the country thrown here to rot.
Now, look at him with his quiet ways.
His breeding, his education, his lawyer's thoughts.
Now, I ask you, who among us is the informer? - I say it is Cardoza! - Yeah.
- Cardoza! - Yeah.
Let him! Let him talk! Let him talk! Yes, I am different from all of you, but I tell you this: All my life, I have worked for such as you.
To give you dignity.
- It isn't that easy.
- Well, listen, then he can tell That is enough of speeches.
It is time to vote, to look into his face as we each pronounce the verdict.
Look at your fellow man, Cardoza.
See what he thinks.
How will you kill me? Yes, yes, what is it? I am very embarrassed, sir, but You know the prisoners I brought yesterday? - The ones who started the fight? - What about them? One of them must have picked my pocket.
My watch is gone.
It was my father's watch handed down.
I have looked everywhere.
They must have it.
Well, what do you want me to do about it? I request permission to search the prisoners, sir.
Permission granted.
Did you say there was a fight? - Yes.
- Did they strike you? Yes.
Are you sure you're not going back just to punish them? I resent your implication.
I'm sorry.
Please, I apologise.
The apology is accepted.
Well, I think I have all the information that I need.
Fine.
Fine.
My aide will show you your quarters.
Watch the window.
Watch the window.
Here, tie him.
Yeah.
Perhaps you have last words, huh? Yes.
Speak them.
I wish to write a suicide note.
For what reason? To spare you punishment.
Gag him.
Your suicide note has already been arranged.
Take him away.
All right, hold it right there.
Hold it right where you are.
If Cardoza dies tonight, many die.
Why? I told you before.
I am leaving in the morning.
My friend with the pistol has earned the right to go with me.
Keep Cardoza here.
Kill him if you like.
But not until after we are gone.
- The guards are coming! - Get him in the shower.
- Here, go.
- Get him in.
Get him in here.
Morales.
Turn around.
Quickly! Johnson! - Lieutenant, how are you? - Now turn around! I don't know how that got there.
It must have grown in my pocket.
Silence! Very funny.
Very amusing.
Very good little joke, huh? Soon, I will be going back to the city.
With the rum, and the tequila, and the girls.
You will stay here and rot! Perhaps, lieutenant, we shall be in the city before you.
That's very amusing, Morales.
A very funny joke.
But let me tell you something.
We know all about your plans to escape.
So you see, you are not so clever after all.
All right.
We'll take care of you two later.
First, the unfinished business.
Get in! Come on! - Let's kill him, hang him.
- Yeah! Yeah, let's get him.
Wait a minute! Wait a minute! Now, wait a minute! I found something.
Let him go.
He's not your informer.
What? The lieutenant who was just here, while he was searching me, I picked his pocket.
And I found this.
Tinfoil with holes punched in it, pinholes.
Now, wait a minute, that's how the informer communicates.
He probably rolls it up in a ball, takes it over to the mess hall, and a guard or someone picks it up.
Yeah.
- Leduc! - Get him! Put him in there.
Put him in there.
You pig! All this time.
All this time we were friends and you were informing on me, on Klaus, on everyone.
- And Rivera, Rivera.
- Rivera! You murdered him.
Bring him out! - Bring him out! - Hang him! No, I did not mean Rivera's death.
I did not mean Rivera's death.
I didn't know.
What about Cardoza? You were willing to let him hang! No, no, please.
Do not kill me, please.
I will do anything you ask.
Anything! Hold it! Hold it! Hold it! Wait a minute! Don't kill him, not tonight.
Give us our chance to escape.
If we let him live he will tell someone.
He will tell.
He will.
He will tell.
No, we can keep him on ice here tonight.
In the morning, when we go to the mess hall, if he gets near a guard, he dies on the spot.
Give us our chance.
What do you say, Sperizzi? He did us a favour.
Otherwise, we would have killed the wrong man.
Leduc would tell.
We would all be in the hole for months.
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
We give you this chance.
Yeah.
You do not know what you are doing.
What do you care of these people? I will see the commandant treats you well.
I am sick of your whining.
You shut your mouth or we kill you here and now.
- Where are you going? - I must see the comandante.
If you want to see the comandante, make an official request.
Sir, my life is in danger! Always there is someone whose life is in danger! Go! Line up.
Line up.
Line up.
Go.
Go.
- Well, is it locked? - Yes.
Señorita Bailey.
It's been quite an experience, comandante.
Señor Valesquez.
- Thank you, comandante.
Goodbye.
- Goodbye.
Are you all right? Are you all right, miss? I'm terribly sorry.
I didn't see you.
Stand back.
Get them back.
Get the prisoners back! Get them back! - Stand back.
- Make sure they're back.
I didn't see the car at all.
I was just driving What are you doing? Now, hold it.
Drop your gun.
Hold it or the lady gets shot.
Comandante, tell them to drop their weapons or you and the lady will die.
Throw down your weapons.
Drop your weapons! I owe you a ride, lieutenant.
Get in.
- But, señor - Just get in and drive! Come on, you too.
Keep them covered, Morales.
Now, open the back door and get in.
It was a short visit but very pleasant, comandante.
