Mission Impossible (1966) s05e01 Episode Script

The Killer

Oh, get it on, baby! Turn it down, will you? Hello.
I said turn it down, I can't hear.
Yeah, this is Eddie Lorca.
Yes, sir, I've been expecting your call.
Well, if-if you don't mind, sir, I'd like to handle it my own way.
Yes, sir.
I'd just like the phone number.
Mm-hmm.
I'll be in town Friday.
I'll make the call at 2:15.
Uh, yes, sir, same as, uh, same as before.
$25,000 for the contract.
Thank you, sir.
Good-bye.
Hey, baby.
I've got a contract to fill.
How long will it take this time? I don't know.
Will you call me? Hey, baby, you know I don't like to call you when I'm out of town.
Hey, where's the funeral? I gotta get dressed; go dance.
Hey, baby maybe I will call you.
How are the bass biting? I've caught three.
Yeah, good.
I caught six myself yesterday.
Good morning, Mr.
Phelps.
A hired killer, Eddie Lorca, will arrive in this city on Transamerica flight number one on Friday.
Lorca has a contract with the most powerful underworld leader in this part of the United States a man we know only by his code name, Scorpio.
Lorca's mission is to kill someone.
We do not know whom he will kill or where, when or how he will do it.
Your mission, Jim, should you decide to accept it, is to prevent the murder and discover the identity of Scorpio.
This tape will self-destruct in five seconds.
Good luck, Jim.
Two years of police surveillance of Lorca boils down to this.
He does everything at random, never the same thing twice, never the same way.
What about the 12 murders he's suspected of? No, nothing, Paris, except efficiency.
Each case was different because Lorca himself selected the method of murder at random, at the last possible moment.
That's quite a philosophy.
If I don't know what I'm doing, then neither does anybody else, so I'm safe.
And it's worked so far.
That's why we have to get close to him, Willie.
Right inside his skin.
We have to know what he's going to do at the same time he does himself.
Jim Lorca's next random choice for a place to stay.
It's his kind of hotel: Small and anonymous.
Right now, it's a total blank.
All previous identification has been removed.
Everybody's standing by.
How long will you need? Everything ready on your end, Willie? I'm all set, Jim.
Good.
Now, we can't afford any mistakes.
Lorca's edgy, and he's always on guard.
If we lose Lorca, we lose our chance to identify his boss, Scorpio.

Look, I'm new in town.
I want to go to the Bower Hotel.
You know where it is? Yeah, sure.
All right, you heard him Bower Hotel.
Repeating Bower Hotel.
How long do you figure it'll take to get me there? Oh, about 20 minutes.
You're putting me on.
What do you mean? Well, I told you I was new in town, so you decided to take me the long way around.
The phone directory says 15 minutes.
Hey, look, mister, sit back and relax.
If any cabbie in town can get you there in 15 minutes, I can.
You're on.
Barney, any chance of making it in 15 minutes? None, Jim.
Well, it all depends on Willie.
You here on business? Yeah, business.
Dana.
Give me a level.
One, two, three, four, five.
Good.
Jim, I've got him at check point one.
Hey, fella, I think the lights broke.
Why don't you drive through it? I can get a ticket.
Why don't you turn right? All right.
There, you see? It's green.
These are smudged.
Run off a dozen more.
Five minutes to go, Jim.
We need every second.
Willie's got to hold them at checkpoint two.
Go! Come on! Come on! Go! Come on, man! Move it, will you? Come on.
Come on, man, let's get going.
I can't move it for him.
Ha, ha.
A million miles forward and no miles backward.
Let's go back the other way.
Hey, what is it with you guys? You think you own the street or something? Hey, you can get through over there.
Man, I can't make it through there.
I'll wreck the cab.
Oh, adios, man.
Hey, wait a minute, wait a minute.
I'll make it.
I'll make it.
Jim, couldn't hold him any longer.
We almost lost him.
Oh, no.
Here, let me.
There, you can continue now.
- Thank you, dear.
- You're welcome.
The operations room.
Six dollars and 40 cents, sir.
Keep it.
Thanks.
Good afternoon, sir.

I'd like a room, please.
Yes, sir.
We have a room, one of the very best.
I like to pick my own.
I beg your pardon? I like to pick my own room number.
- Room seven.
- Yes, sir.
Room seven is available.
Thanks.
Here.
Thank you, sir.
You're welcome.
Hey, listen.
How about a bottle of your best Scotch? You know what else to bring, huh? - Yes, sir.
- Thanks.
Go.
Who is it? It's the maid with some towels.
- Just in time.
- Excuse me, sir.
It's all right.
Thanks again.
Good-bye.
At least we have him where we can keep our finger on him.
And all we have to do is find out whom he's going to kill, and when and where and how.
Hello.
Hello.
This is Lorca.
Let me speak to him.
Him? It's me you want to talk to.
Scorpio's using a bag woman? What do you know! You got something to tell me? I'm supposed to meet you at the, uh Uh-uh.
I'll tell you where to meet me.
All right, okay.
Whatever you say.
Listen, uh, why don't you meet me where I'm staying? At the Bower Hotel.
You know where it is? I, uh I don't think so.
Wait a minute.
It's at 215 S.
Elm Street.
You got that? I know where Elm street is.
All right.
I'm in room seven.
How long do you think it'll take you to get here? Three quarters of an hour.
All right, try not to be late, huh? Bye.
Hello.
Uh, it's me again, Lorca.
Well, I'm hurrying.
I'll be there.
I won't be late.
Now wait a minute, baby.
Listen, I changed my mind.
There's a park down the block from the hotel.
I'll be on a bench near the corner.
You got it? The corner near the Bower Hotel.
Right.
Be there in a half hour.
Barney, Willie, he's not leaving.
All right, I'll be there.
I won't be late.
Think you have it, Dana? I think so.
Lorca? It's all in here.
Who pays off when I make the hit? I will.
Let me know as soon as you, uh, do it.
"William Barton, "president of Local 85, construction workers, "will be at the Knickerbocker Hotel, room 526.
"He'll be in his room, working on a speech "from 4:30 to 5:00 p.

Today.
He'll be alone.
" Well, at least we know where's he going to make his hit, and when.
And who he's going to kill.
We'll be with you all the way, Barney.
Let's see.
Yeah, that's fine, Dana.
A little more that way, Barney.
Okay.
Good.
Now, we'll need time to get Barton out of there and get Barney set up.
I'll hold him.
All right.
Who is it? It's Flo.
Hi.
Lorca? Yeah, that's me, Lorca.
It's all in there.
Gee, this is a nice room you got here.
Yeah, well it's all right.
Why don't you sit down and make yourself comfortable? I want to go over this.
Oh, thanks.
Hey, can't you offer a girl a drink? Well, I'm sorry.
What would you like? Um scotch and water.
I'm glad you said scotch; that's all I have.
How long does it take to get from here to this hotel? Oh, about, um ten minutes, I think.
Good.
Then we've got plenty of time.
Oh, wait.
Here's where you call me when you make the hit.
This isn't the number where I called you.
Oh, it's where I pick up the bag.
The money.
Yeah.
You're not the girl I talked to on the phone.
What do you mean? The girl I talked to on the phone sounded, uh, sexy.
Oh drink up.
Salud.
Well, there doesn't seem to be much doubt about it, does there? I'm afraid not.
But you I don't like you risking your life for me.
I'll be well taken care of, Mr.
Barton.
I hope so.
Mr.
Barton, please go with this gentleman.
Thank you.
She held him.
More like he held her.
Um can I have another drink? Come on.
You putting me on? You know I've been around a little bit.
If you're Scorpio's trick, be up front with it.
Come here.
Come here, baby.
You're weird.
You're violent.
Get out of here! Sure, I will! You lousy ape! You guys think you can just come into town, have your fun and split! Well, you've got a job to do and I don't get my payoff till you do it! So just take a look at the time, baby! Stick with him.
Jim, we've lost him.
Barney? Barney, do you read me? Barney? Yes, Jim.
Paris is on his way to your hotel now.
We lost Lorca.
Be ready for him anytime.
Okay.
Paris will be in the room right across the hall from you.
Right.
Good afternoon, Hotel Knickerbocker.
Hello, can, uh, can I have a room for tonight? Ye-Yes, sir, single? Yeah, look I've, uh, I've stayed at your hotel before, and I kind of like the fifth floor.
One moment, please.
Oh, sorry, sir.
There's nothing available on the fifth floor.
Some other floor do? How about the sixth? Yes, sir, we have several rooms available on the sixth.

I was wondering if I could come up and see you for a few minutes.
What union did you say? Uh, well, it's right here in town.
Uh, it'd be, it'd be a big help, Mr.
Barton.
Okay.
When do you want to come up? Fine, I'll be here.
Well, thank you, Mr.
Barton.

Well, thank you very much.
I'll be right up.
Willie Lorca's in the lobby.
Check it out.
Right.
Jim, he's not in the lobby, and he didn't get by our man at the service entrance.
Jim, what do you think? Is he in the hotel or isn't he? I don't know.
Why didn't he come up to the room? You gave him the number.
Didn't pass this way.
No action here.
Jim, Lorca just came out of the hotel.
Repeat: Out of the hotel.
Stand by.
Lorca's making a telephone call in a booth across from the hotel.
Another phone call.
