Mission Impossible (1966) s06e08 Episode Script

Underwater

Alate word just in from the sheriff's office regarding this morning's unexplained ocean disaster.
Aerial and ocean survey teams as yet have found no survivors and no bodies from the mysterious explosion which ripped apart the pleasure boat Leonora at 8:05 this morning.
Officials are speculating on the possibility that the Leonora was engaged in the heavy smuggling activity known to be Come in.
They think I was going to double-cross you, Berlinger.
Where'd you find him? Motel up the coast.
Fixing to get out of the country.
Well, it-it was the explosion.
I didn't know what I was doing.
You found none of the diamonds on him? They went down.
The courier had them chained to his wrist.
The explosion blew us both overboard.
I'm, I'm lucky to still be alive.
Don't be too sure of that, Hoffman.
Good morning, Mr.
Phelps.
George Berlinger, millionaire manufacturer and the country's largest dealer in stolen gems, is scheduled to transfer a huge shipment of diamonds to an underworld figure for $75 million dollars.
At this moment, only one man in the world knows where those diamonds are, and he is Berlinger's former lieutenant, Frederick Hoffman, who stole them, hid them, and is now being tortured by Berlinger to reveal their whereabouts.
Conventional law enforcement agencies are unable to guarantee the recovery of the jewels.
Your mission, Jim, if you decide to accept it, is to recover those diamonds, seize the $75 million in cash and put Berlinger out of business for good.
This tape will self-destruct in five seconds.
Good luck, Jim.
Good, Barney.
$75 million is a lot of money, Jim.
Well, the syndicate's gone in very heavily for stolen gems, Casey.
With international currency so unstable, they make a perfect investment.
Now, this is a duplicate of one of the more important diamonds which were stolen.
It's an old mine cut.
Berlinger's man Hawks has enough of an eye to recognize its unique quality.
Barney? The gas is harmless, Jim, even underwater.
Mm-hmm.
And how about Berlinger's inside man, Simmons? Casey's already checked me out on the mask.
Jim, how can we be sure that Hoffman actually hid the diamonds underwater? Well, we can't be, Casey, but everything points in that direction.
Hoffman's an expert scuba diver, We found his gear hidden on the beach.
Apparently, Berlinger agrees with us, because he's had a team of divers searching the area ever since he picked Hoffman up.
The air conditioning system went off on schedule, Jim.
They've ordered a new compressor.
Good.
Now, Berlinger's illegitimate activities are centered in the 23rd floor complex of his headquarters.
You'll both have to be very careful.
His security force is geared to kill.
Anything yet on the syndicate man who is supposed to buy the diamonds from Berlinger? No, no, it's still a total blank.
Except that we do know that he or she advanced Berlinger $10 million against the total price of $75 million.
What happens if Berlinger doesn't come up with the diamonds? They'll kill him.
Well, what's up? We found him down there.
I thought you'd want to know.
Hey, who are you? And who are these guys? Suppose you answer the questions.
Who are you? Warner, Bob Warner.
What were you doing in this area? Swimming! You don't own the ocean, you know! Well, maybe not, but I'd hate to see one of my men mistake you for a shark or something and put a spear through you.
Now, clear out of this area! Head back for shore.
We don't take deliveries Saturday.
This order calls for immediate delivery-- type A-3 compressor for an L-22 air conditioning unit.
Come back Monday.
It's okay with me, mister.
Just sign here where it says "delivery refused.
" It'll cost another 150 bucks Monday, though.
Keep your shirt on.
The replacement for the burned-out compressor's here.
With a work crew? No, just the trucker.
Have him put it in storage.
Right.
Scotch on the rocks, a splash.
Bartender, I lost a ring in here last night.
I-I was sitting right there in that booth.
Lady, this place is cleaned at closing time.
If anybody found a ring, I'd have heard about it by now.
Oh, but I know it's here.
I distinctly remember seeing it on my finger at 1:00.
Go easy on that stuff.
He's no good to me dead.
This is not the serum.
He's had too much of that already.
This is just something to bring him around.
This is supposed to be truth serum.
All he does is keep lying.
Yeah, but he's tough in the head.
Maybe seeing all those diamonds made him that way.
Yes? This is Hawks.
Let me talk with him.
It's Hawks.
I'll take it in my study.
Keep working on him.
Oh, now they'll all be just thrilled now that it's gone! Was it insured, ma'am? No, I only got it yesterday and haven't had it long enough.
Well, it's not here, lady, I tell you.
Yes? Nothing so far.
What about the caves along the shore? We searched every foot of them.
Nothing.
Ooh, I know I should have had it cut down! Oh, dear! What about Hoffman? He's not talking.
It's got to be here! Uh! Ooh! Lady, is that it? Ooh! That's it! All right, - Oh! I'll keep them looking.
I'm so happy! That's beautiful! Oh! Thank you! Oh! I think I would have killed myself if I'd have lost that ring! You know, my boyfriend says it's very valuable! It's mine-cut, you know.
Maybe you'd better get it insured, ma'am.
I don't think I have to.
He said something about, um, a "group policy.
" Oh! Thank you so much! Bye now! Now will you sign the invoice? Open it.
Look, they're not going to install it till Monday.
This says one compressor, right? - Right.
And you want me to sign for it, right? That's right.
Then I gotta see it.
Okay? Okay.
Oh, Alex.
Come on, old man.
Here I am.
Look at me.
Uh, Berlinger, I I tried to save them.
I know.
You've already told me that.
You were a mile, maybe more from the shore.
He was near the rail, the case was chained to his wrist.
Then the explosion, and he was blown overboard.
I, uh when I came to, I was in the I was in the water.
I never I never saw him again.
And you never saw the diamonds again.
No! Hoffman, you're a liar.
Don't you think I know you? Your percentage in this shipment came to $100,000.
You would have died out there looking for that case rather than watch it go down chained to a dead man! No! No, no! Yeah, you're all right, Casey.
Did-did they? Yeah, they took the ring.
Now it's Berlinger's move.
The exact weights weren't recorded on all our stones.
We had 416 plus or minus Gem number 376.
It's one of ours.
Put it back in its setting.
It's one of ours.
The woman who wore this diamond ring will lead us to the stones.
This is your last chance.
Tell me where they are, I'll give you back your life.
I don't know where they are.
What good will the diamonds do you dead? I swear, Berlinger, I told you the truth.
Use the serum.
Only this time, double the dose.
There may be very little left of your life when this man is finished.
You will tell us.
Please, Berlinger Please I'm going to see this Heywood woman.
Go into my study.
Call and see how the divers are doing.
Don't worry.
I'm going to get you out of here.
Yeah, this is Hawks.
No luck, huh? All right, keep them looking.
Uh, listen, go over those caves again.
Yeah.
Simmons.
Is he talking? No, he's not under yet.
All right, call me when he is.
Who are you? Why are you doing this? Later, Hoffman.
The important thing is, I'm getting you out of here if you do as I say.
This is one of Berlinger's tricks.
If you believe that, you'll die.
All right.
I'll go with you.
Garage.
Captain, this is Simmons.
Mr.
Berlinger left orders for the prisoner to be transferred out of the building.
I'll need help.
Stone'll be right up, Mr.
Simmons.
Stone! They're moving Hoffman.
Go up and give Mr.
Simmons a hand.
Right.
Trust me.
Who is it? - Stone.
Where's he going to? The garage.
You want me to get that? Leave it.
They're probably wondering where we are.
Garage.
Now, this is Hawks.
Simmons's been overpowered.
Hoffman's escaped.
Now seal all exits.
Simmons is leaving with the prisoner now, sir.
Mr.
Berlinger's orders.
Stop them! Jim! Stop! Hold it! Hold it.
I have them right here, Mr.
Hawks.
Stone! All right, who are you? What do you want? Ben Williams, insurance investigations.
Okay, Williams.
Why? For a castle in Spain and a pension for life.
Give it to me in English! Sure.
I get ten percent of the $75 million if I recover the diamonds for the insurance underwriters.
That's $7,500,000.
What diamonds? Yes? Mrs.
Heywood? Mary Heywood? Yes.
May I come in? Do we know each other? Well, we should.
I think you lost this this morning.
Since you didn't report it to the police, it's obvious you suspected that the ring was stolen property.
I suspected no such thing.
It's my ring, and I intend to have it.
I intend you shall have it.
with no further embarrassing questions.
I would like something in return.
From whom did you acquire this? It's such a remarkable ring, I'd like the opportunity of doing a little trading on my own.
Well, I, uh I doubt that you'll get as good a bargain as I did.
No.
I doubt it, but he, um he does have others that might be for sale? Huh? I say he-he has others that might be for sale? I think so.
Where do I find him? He's my scuba teacher, Bob Warner.
And where do I find Mr.
Warner? Oh, thank you.
Of course, if you've referred me to the wrong man I'll be back.
I'm offering you an even split of seven-and-a-half million dollars.
I'll even help you get out of the country so you can live to spend it.
Thanks for everything, man.
Have a good day! Uh! Hmm.
You figure that you'll take off for a couple of years until the heat's off, right? You're very busy upstairs, man.
The diamonds won't be there, Hoffman.
Somebody else already knows where they are.
You're working for Berlinger.
He put you up to this! Are you sure? Not just one of those diamonds, but three of them have already shown up-- all from the same source.
A Mrs.
Heywood.
She lives at the Marina.
No.
No, it's Besides, you'd have moved in on her by now.
I don't know how many other people are involved.
If I have to split it too many ways, it doesn't do me any good.
All right, but uh, let me talk to this Mrs.
Heywood first.
Why? There isn't any Mrs.
Heywood, is there? Of course there is.
I just don't want to scare her off.
We won't scare her off.
We'll just offer to buy a couple of diamonds at a good price.
Okay.
I'm sorry to startle you.
The door was unlocked.
That's no invitation.
I'm a friend of Mrs.
Heywood.
Oh.
Oh.
You're interested in, uh scuba instruction.
I'm interested in diamonds.
Diamonds? Why would you come to me? I saw the one you gave Mrs.
Heywood, and I know that somewhere offshore you found an attaché case filled with diamonds.
Man, you're on a trip.
Oh, boy, am I hung! That was some affair last night, and I think I need a belt.
Warner, diamonds are my business.
Well, so what? Let me put it this way.
The legitimate retail value of those diamonds is over $100 million.
There's only one man in the world that can sell them for that price.
He's ready to buy them from me for $75 million.
You can't sell them to anybody, not without being caught and sent to jail, that is.
They're stolen, you see.
How does five million dollars in relatively small, safe, genuine, untraceable bills sound to you? That's not bad for a half hour's scuba dive, is it? Five million dollars? Five million.
And all I have to do is get them for you? That's all.
Cash on delivery? On delivery.
Let's you have a belt, huh? Sure.
yeah.
Yes? Mrs.
Heywood? Yes.
We'd like to talk to you.
Who are you, anyway? We're very nice people, Mrs.
Heywood, and we pay very nice prices for used diamonds.
The police? No, nothing like that.
Let's just say we're merchants.
Come in.
May I get you some wine? We'd like to see the merchandise.
Sit down.
She's dead.
Wow.
Somebody else knows where those diamonds are, and that somebody didn't want her to tell us who he is.
Okay, you win.
I'll get you the rest of the diamonds, but I'll need some help with my gear.
Well, fine.
I have a truck we can use.
I should have known something was wrong when I caught him swimming out there.
He's very valuable to us.
With Hoffman gone, he's our last chance to get the diamonds on time.
What about the five million you promised him? If he comes up with the diamonds, kill him.
Willie, I have you on the scope about 300 yards right of Hoffman.
Turn 20 degrees left and slow down.
Jim, I have you in sight.
Slow down.
Tell him to slow down.
I got to get my bearings.
Slow it down! Jim, head parallel with the shore.
Go about a hundred yards and stop.
Head parallel to the shore about a hundred yards and then stop.
A hundred yards further on! Hold it here for a minute.
Stop! Willie, turn 30 degrees left.
You're close to him.
I think he's found it.
Jim, continue same course as before.
Hoffman will be directly below you.
About 75 more yards, we're there.
As soon as we're sure we have the diamonds Right, Willie.
What is this? Well, I may be poor, but I'm not stupid, Mr.
Berlinger.
I gave them to a friend of mine down there.
Now, we will go to my place, and when I see the $5 million, I'll telephone my friend, and he will bring the diamonds.
Very nicely thought out, Mr.
Warner, but there's a problem.
I don't have the $5 million.
Well, that's your problem, not mine.
No $5 million, no diamonds.
Perhaps, if your friend came into my office, My pad.
Call my contact.
Get him on the radio phone.
Tell him meet me at Warner's place.
We'll conclude the transaction there.
Your friend is a little late.
What happened to the fancy office, Berlinger? Unusual circumstances.
You brought the money, Mr.
Connors? You have the diamonds? No.
The unusual, circumstances include the fact that I can't deliver the diamonds until I present this gentleman with $5 million of my own money.
You do not have the $5 million? You do want the diamonds, don't you, Mr.
Connors.
Yes, I do want them.
Then just show my friend here the money.
There need be no actual exchange until the diamonds are here.
Agreed? Let's see the money.
Now.
Just be a moment, gentlemen.
