Mission Impossible (1966) s07e03 Episode Script

The Deal

Can you change a thousand-dollar bill? No, you have to see the manager.
I was told by Mr.
Harrington that you'd change it.
Mr.
Harrington? Of course, sir.
Good afternoon, Mr.
Phelps.
General Oliver Hammond, British soldier of fortune who heads the armed forces of the Republic of Camagua is about to take over the government aided by syndicate money.
In return, syndicate leader John Larson and his lieutenant, Charles Rogan, will control all gambling and prostitution in Camagua.
Rogan is bringing Hammond a $5 million payoff in the form of a key to a safe-deposit box.
We have not been able to locate that bank.
Your assignment, should you accept it, is to get that key, which will identify the bank and lead to the bank access card, signed by both Rogan and Hammond himself.
Publication of the syndicate deal, backed by the proof in that safe-deposit box, will discredit Hammond and prevent syndicate takeover of an entire nation.
This tape will self-destruct in five seconds.
Good luck, Jim.
Anything from Willy yet? Not yet, Jim.
I have a man monitoring the radio.
The yacht isn't due to dock at Port Camagua until nearly nightfall.
If he doesn't find the key on the yacht, we'll make the intercept at once.
That way we'll have a few hours before Hammond mounts a search.
Can he search at night? No, not really effectively, Mimi.
But don't forget we're only 40 miles from Port Camagua.
Come morning, he'll find this base.
So add it up, we'll have part of this afternoon and one night to make the plan work.
Unless Willy gets very lucky onboard Rogan's yacht.
Briscoe calling Scramble 1.
Do you read me? This is Scramble 1.
We read you, Briscoe.
No luck so far, Jim.
I've already searched most of the yacht.
I'm still convinced Larson gave Rogan the key before we left.
But it's hidden.
They're all up on deck now, so I'll be able to search the main cabin.
All right, we'll proceed with the plan.
Hold.
We'll be ready to move out in a quarter of an hour.
Pull out in 15 minutes, Briscoe.
Good.
Briscoe out.
You got the mask of Chalmers? Casey made it before she left.
When will she be back from East Europe? I don't know, Mimi.
She's on a deep cover mission.
She's gonna be out of touch for quite a while.
- Are the cells ready? - Just about.
Barney.
Jim, each rifle on the firing squad will be equipped with these.
It's a combination tranquilizer and blood capsule.
Pick a target.
Above those numbers.
All right.
Looks good, Barney.
Rogan arrives tonight.
And I want total security from the moment he enters the harbour.
Patrol boats are standing by, sir.
At this moment, we estimate Rogan's yacht to be approximately here.
- Hey.
- Happy birthday, Chuck.
Well, isn't that beautiful.
Thank you very much.
Well, open it up.
Yeah, after all, you've paid for it.
Yeah.
Well, it feels expensive.
Just how much of my money did you blow? Briscoe calling Scramble 1.
What kind of range does it have, Chuck? Let's find out.
Briscoe calling Scramble 1.
Do you read me? We read you, Briscoe, loud and clear.
Are you having any luck? We'll just have to pull the yacht in and take it apart.
Well, isn't this sweet, Briscoe? Turn that thing off.
Go on.
- Are you ready? - Yeah.
Move out now.
Give it to me.
All right, hold it.
They've got Willy.
You got him.
Who was he? Someone after $5 million.
Arnie.
Arnie.
How soon can we get to Camagua? Maybe two hours.
- No maybes, get moving.
- All right.
Rogan.
Well, General Hammond is paying his respects.
They're signalling, they wanna come aboard.
Let them on.
And when Rogan docks, he and his party will be escorted directly to your office.
Quite right.
No one must know that he's seeing me or that he's in Port Camagua at all.
Yes, sir.
- Mr.
Rogan? - Yes.
You'll come with us, please.
Well, that wasn't the arrangement.
You misunderstand.
You're under arrest.
But I'm Charles Rogan.
I know.
- We're friends of General Hammond.
- Just take it easy.
We'll straighten this out.
I'm gonna personally see to it that he busts you to deck hand.
Let's go.
Sheer off.
Sheer.
Sheer off.
Sheer.
They're ripping our nets.
Why is Hammond pulling a double-cross? He needs us.
Yeah, until he gets his hands on that money.
He'll die of old age first.
Lousy government.
First, they ram a quota down our throats.
And now look, one of their own patrol boats.
As I'm a man, believe me, I'm gonna get satisfaction.
Somebody's gonna hear about this.
Calling Scramble 1.
This is Scramble 1.
We read you.
We're on schedule, Jim.
We'll be at the dock in 25 minutes.
Still no sign of Willy.
Line up over there.
You are accused of interference in the internal affairs of the Republic of Camagua.
And of criminally conspiring with ex-General Oliver Hammond by Ex-general? What are you talking about? Hammond was arrested this morning.
Now, don't interrupt again.
And of criminally conspiring with ex-General Oliver Hammond by financing his illegal attempted coup.
That's a lie.
We were on a pleasure cruise.
You'll be heard this afternoon at your interrogation.
Now place your personal belongings on the counter in separate piles.
Don't worry, hon.
Larson will get us out of this.
- Rogan? - Yeah.
I hope you're right.
It's okay.
- Hi.
I'm Marcy Carpenter.
- Congratulations.
Why are you in here? Well, honey, I guess I'm just lucky.
I was Oliver Hammond's lady friend.
So, what he gets, I get.
Yeah, I owe it all to him.
Just because you and he? Just because he stashed away a lot of money, they think I might know where it's at.
What do they want from you? I don't know.
Sure, honey.
I believe you.
But they won't.
Rogan's car key, a foreign car.
Still no vault key.
It's got to be on that boat.
Check the rest of the deck.
- I'm going below.
- Right.
That's it.
The key has got to be onboard that yacht.
It's either gotta be in the hull or the planking.
We don't have time to take the yacht apart.
Well, we're gonna take Rogan apart.
- Rogan.
- Yeah.
They're setting up a firing squad.
Don't worry.
They're not gonna shoot any of us.
Why? Give me one good reason.
Dummy, I'll give you 5 million of them.
You just relax.
Practise keeping your mouth shut.
Rogan is gonna be tough.
That's what we're counting on.
Get on your feet.
Get up.
On your feet.
I'm Colonel Garvey, your interrogation officer.
My government has empowered me to grant clemency in exchange for a full written confession.
Right away, admiral.
No deal.
We're innocent.
Yeah, we want a lawyer.
- This one first.
- Hey, I'm an American citizen.
Yes, so was I once.
Now we're both under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Camagua.
Get him up.
Attempted escape, assault, you're a stupid man, Chalmers.
Next time, I'll kill you.
I doubt that.
Shoot him.
Arnie, it's a bluff.
Hey, wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
Hey.
Hey, come on.
It's all right.
You'll be all right.
He's dead.
Some bluff.
Listen, Arnie, use your head.
Look, they'll do anything to get at us, to make us talk, but we're not signing or saying anything.
Is that clear? The yacht should be off our north coast by now.
Send out a reconnaissance plane.
And I want top security as of now until Rogan is safe on shore.
Yes, sir.
No.
No! No, no! No! No! No! No! No! No.
Why? I told them Hammond never trusted me with any of his secrets.
They didn't believe me.
I hope you're in a better bargaining position than I was.
My friend Chuck, he knows what he's doing.
Oh, you got the faith.
Sweet.
Dumb.
I've made up my mind.
I'm gonna get out of this.
How? Wait for a miracle.
Are you all right? Dandy.
I'm sorry.
I'll do what I can for you.
Tomorrow.
Thanks.
What's that all about? I guess they finally believed my story.
Yeah.
Sure.
And Mimi will allow Marcy Carpenter to discover the escape plan tonight.
Good.
We'll let her simmer for a while, then the death sentence.
And you move Sanders out as soon as I leave.
All right, how long do we leave Rogan and Marcy alone? No more than a few seconds.
Just enough for her to tell him about the escape.
The yacht must be there.
Rogan is overdue now.
There's no trace of the yacht, no wreckage, nothing, sir.
Continue aerial reconnaissance.
Yes, sir.
Vanished? How? I was hoping you had some answers, Larson.
Rogan is your man.
And that 5 million is my money.
I'll leave for Camagua at once.
Do you know this man? He was registered as a member of your crew when you left Miami.
Briscoe.
We ran into some weather.
He must've fallen overboard and by the time we found out, it was too late.
You're a liar.
Why, ask the others.
Now, that would be a waste of time, wouldn't it? If you are telling the truth, Captain Sanders, it was your responsibility to alert the other ships in the area, wasn't it? Well, we had some trouble with the radio.
We checked it.
It's in perfect condition.
I finally got it fixed.
You're lying.
Now, once again, how did this man disappear? What happened to him? Briscoe.
Briscoe.
We identified you through your papers.
Where is the yacht? Where am I? Port Camagua.
What happened to the yacht? I went overboard.
With a bullet hole in you? Who shot you? What happened? He shot me.
Took it over.
Who? Rogan.
Charles Rogan.
Taking the yacht to Trinidad.
Rogan.
Doctor, get out.
I want a full-scale search, sea and air.
Rogan must have planned this, he'd have a hiding place set up.
Sir, it's already dark.
Yes, very well.
Concentrate on the route to Trinidad.
Tomorrow, at first light, get every reconnaissance plane we have into the air.
Home, sweet home.
When do I get pulled out again? Later.
You'll be told.
What's going to happen later? Full moon maybe.
You've got something planned with him.
- Buzz off.
- You tell me, sweetheart, or I'll start yelling and let the colonel start asking questions.
All right.
I've got a way out.
Tomorrow.
How did you know where the yacht was captured? A fisherman saw it with what looked like a government patrol boat.
Except it wasn't.
I've ordered an aerial search using infrared cameras.
Briscoe is a reliable man.
I'll get the truth out of him.
That man isn't Frank Briscoe.
He's a phoney.
This interrogation will determine the details of a conspiracy to place General Oliver Hammond in power through corruption and bribery.
It will also investigate the murder of one Frank Briscoe in Camaguan waters.
Interrogating Officer, Colonel Thomas Garvey.
Defendants are Charles Rogan, Arnold Sanders, Marcia Carpenter.
Both charges carry a maximum sentence of death.
All I know is that Mr.
Rogan hired me and told me to use Briscoe's papers.
- Why? - He didn't say.
Just told me to follow orders.
Like not radioing in when we got close to the island.
I don't believe it.
Rogan has been a reliable man for 13 years.
Five million dollars puts a strain on a man's reliability.
You said Rogan headed the yacht toward Trinidad? Yeah.
I think.
Come on, you.
Spill it.
Well, he said that.
Once they dumped me overboard, I saw her shifting course.
Like maybe back toward Miami.
That enlarges the possible search area - but we can cover it in the morning.
- If he's telling the truth.
It would be extraordinarily stupid of him to lie.
Guard, he's to have no visitors, no outside communication.
No, sir.
I didn't see anybody get killed.
I mean, I didn't see anything at all.
- I'm gonna warn you, Miss Carpenter - She has nothing to say.
- Quiet.
- Why? You're gonna shoot us anyway, aren't you? We got nothing to lose.
No reason to cooperate with you.
Your comment is noted.
We have General Hammond's full confession.
"I, Oliver Benjamin Hammond, do hereby freely admit to entering into an agreement with John Larson and his associates.
" Begin full-scale search operations at first light tomorrow that will cover the coast, the route to the United States southern coastline.
Meanwhile, tonight continue infrared photographic reconnaissance.
"And that Charles Rogan was to deliver the key to a safe-deposit box containing the final payment of $5 million.
" That's a lie.
I wanna hear that from Hammond himself.
Unfortunately, General Hammond is dead.
Heart attack.
I'm now ready to pass sentence.
Marcia Carpenter, I find you guilty of conspiracy.
I sentence you to five years in the National Penitentiary.
Charles Rogan, Arnold Sanders, I find you guilty of conspiracy and murder.
I sentence you to execution by the firing squad tomorrow morning.
Come on.
Guard.
Chuck, the girl in my cell, I think she has a way out of here.
A reconnaissance plane just flew over.
Hammond? They'll pick up the yacht if they're using infrared photography.
Do you think they have equipment that sophisticated? Well, we have to assume they do and that narrows the margin.
We don't have any choice, we have to give the plan time to work.
Get the ship ready, have the crew standing by first light.
We'll have to be ready to move out fast.
Right.
We had to come down here to make death row.
Arnie, will you? All right, Sanders, let's go.
No.
- Rogan, you - Take it easy.
They're bluffing.
Just trying to make us crawl.
Don't worry, we won't.
Hey, don't look.
- Come on.
- No.
Load.
Aim.
Fire.
Guard.
Guard! Tell Colonel Garvey I wanna see him.
Tell him I'm ready to make a deal.
"I, Charles Rogan, do hereby state of my own free will " - Instead of getting shot.
- Sign it.
Now I want out.
Just as soon as we have the key to the safe-deposit box.
Well, I don't have that.
Rogan, by signing this, you just became a dead man.
Larson would pay a lot to have you murdered.
You have no place in the world to go, no place to hide.
If you cooperate with us, we'll see that you're safe but it's gonna cost you that key.
Hey.
What is it? It is $5 million.
And I would give a large hunk of it to get out of here.
Or would you rather I told Colonel Garvey about your deal with the girl? All right.
- That's the yacht, all right.
- Where? The abandoned U.
S.
Government Maintenance Depot on the north coast.
There.
You'll be happy to learn we've located the yacht.
You have? But not headed for Trinidad or for the Florida coast.
It's docked at Cape Cariboso, a deserted World War II American Maintenance Depot about 40 miles from here.
In other words, you lied to us.
- Honest, colonel, I - Don't bother.
General Hammond has already set out with his expeditionary force.
Your pirate friends will soon be joining you, for the hanging.
- All right, both of you, come with me.
- Where? Chuck.
Guard.
Stay close together.
You women wait in the truck.
Stay there while we go get the money.
Report to Colonel Schmidt in the administrative office at once.
Yes, sir.
And don't speak to anybody on the way.
It's a security matter.
Yes, sir.
I'm all set.
We can pull out on two minutes notice.
Marcy Carpenter is tucked below with Chalmers and Sanders.
- Good.
- Calling Scramble 1.
- Willy.
- Calling Scramble 1.
This is Scramble 1.
Where are you? Port Camagua.
Listen, Hammond knows where the base is and he's on his way with a small army.
How long ago did he leave? - I don't know.
- Rogan's cracking.
We'll give him 10 minutes and then we'll pull out.
- Now, where do we find you? - There's a point of land due north of the harbour.
I'll swim out from there.
- You're sure you can make it? - I'll be waiting.
Get everybody aboard ship, ready to pull out.
Right.
Well, not a bad try but not good enough.
Come on, we haven't got much time.
I suppose you used metal detectors? - It's in that plant? - No.
In the pot.
Plastic key.
Five million dollars and a large hunk of it is yours if you get me out of here.
Mr.
Rogan, consider yourself a free man.
The key, Jim.
Are you all right? I'm fine.
Did you get the key? Five million dollars, Rogan, Larson, and the end of General Hammond.
