[Batsheva] So, Mom, when we first
got married, Ben and I had come to you,
we didn't exactly know
how things worked in the bedroom
You know, we came from a place
where sex is so taboo,
and nobody talks about it
My bridal teacher
wouldn't even say the word "sex,"
like, really knew nothing, and you gave us
some really helpful advice
So, now we've been married
for seven years
Ooh, I love this conversation
We don't wanna know personally
about your experience
You sure you don't want me to tell you
about really great sexual experiences?
I love you, but that's a little too gory
for your daughter and son-in-law
[Julia and Batsheva laughing]
So, mix it up. Try role-playing
You know, naughty nurse
Try different positions
You know, 69 it

- [Julia] There you go

What does dinner do?
Does dinner do anything?
Going out to dinners and stuff?
I find that if I've eaten a big dinner,
I don't want sex because I'm too full
And when you've eaten that,

[announcer] Miss Julia Haart!
My name is Julia Haart,
and I am the CEO of Elite World Group,
the largest conglomerate
of modeling agencies in the world
Pretty much every major model,
Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford,
you name them,
has come through Elite World
Ooh, love of my life!
[Julia] I'm married to an amazing man
I have four incredible children
Three of them live here in Manhattan,
and my little one, Aron,
we share custody, my ex-husband and I
I know I have oysters on the table
There's also kosher things coming
[Silvio] Next time, with bacon
- Let's do one step at a time
- Oh, my God!
[Julia] It's really hard to imagine
that just a few years ago,
I was living in an extreme
ultra-Orthodox Jewish community,
yeshivishe heimishe,
from my entire life
until the time I was 40
There are a lot of Jews
who live perfectly regular lives
It has nothing to do
with Judaism or religion
This has to do with fundamentalism
I love being Jewish, but I do believe
whether it's Jewish fundamentalism,
Muslim fundamentalism,
Christian fundamentalism,
it is so dangerous
The women in our community
are second-class citizens
We only exist in relation to a man
A woman can't sing,
because a man might get attracted to her
You can't ride a bicycle,
because your knees might show
and some man
might have bad thoughts about you
The women in our community
were covered from head to toe,
and it was your mother's responsibility
to teach you modesty
Your entire purpose
is not to attract attention
Think about where we came from,
that we're sitting at this table
[Batsheva] Mm-hmm
Do you remember when I first took off
my wig? How, like, angry at me you were?
Yeah
[Julia] If any of your body parts
were uncovered,
there's a very special form of hell that
is reserved for both you and your mother
In this hell,
your mother would dip your clothes
in acid, put them on your body,
and so throughout the day,
your body would decompose from the acid
And then, the next morning,
it would start all over again
for thousands of years
or however many years hell lasts
When you learn this as a child,
and everyone around you believes it,
you believe it
I remember in school, I was taught
that men are better than women
[Julia] Yeah
[Miriam] Guys are just better than girls,
that's how it is
I think that mindset's crazy
We said it every morning from the time
you were a baby. What do you say?
"Thank you, God,
for not making me a woman."
Thank you very much
In our community,
a woman basically has one purpose,
to follow her husband
and to be a baby-making machine
A man can divorce a wife
for burning his food,
but a woman, even if she's being beaten,
cannot divorce her husband
Marriage was prison
I hated being married
But I had no education, I had
no way to support myself. How do I leave?
So I thought, okay, what is the one thing
you can do without a degree?
You can sell
It took me many years,
but I started to sell
life insurance and annuities
without my husband knowing about it
And I slowly, slowly started building
my little escape fund,
and I just packed up and left
No plan, wasn't organized
I just couldn't sit there
for another millisecond
Ben and I have been married
almost eight years
Well, I walked out two months
after you got married
- [Ben] Two days!
- [Julia] Two days
- We got married on a Wednesday
- We left Thursday
- And took off ten days later, Sunday
- [Julia] And then I took off
- [Ben] Right. Then you took off
- [Julia laughing]
[Julia] So when I left, Batsheva was
already married, she was living in Israel,
Shlomo was away in yeshiva,
so there was only Miriam and Aron at home
Miriam came and moved in with me,
and Aron was really little,
he was seven years old,
and so half the time he's with me
and half the time he's still in Monsey
I'm very lucky to have been married
to be married to Batsheva
- Not "have been," to be married
- [all laughing]
We're very much
on the same level religiously, and
[Shlomo] Are you guys?
[Ben] Very much,
on a lot of things we are,
and a big thing, you'll see
when you're in a relationship one day,
is that communication is basically,
arguably the most important thing
[Julia] Batsheva is my oldest daughter
She'd been brought up
in that world the longest,
so of course for her,
it was extremely difficult
Ben and I are at a different level
than you, and I think that's okay
Ben is my husband and best friend
He's a real estate agent in the city
We got married when we were 19 years old
Getting married that young is very common
Right after I got married, my mom decided
she no longer wanted
to be religious at all,
and that was really challenging for me
because I was brought up one way,
and she was basically saying,
"I don't believe
in any of that, I'm going."
I still live
a very religious Jewish lifestyle,
but I am obviously not where I used to be,
and I've found my own way in the religion
[Miriam] I was taught
"One way or the highway."
[Julia] Yeah. One way or the highway
But I think that's crazy. At the least
[Julia] My daughter Miriam
is very much like me in the sense that
we're both not religious at all
Somebody asked, like, what a lesbian was,
and my teacher said that doesn't exist
Means I'm not breaking any rules
Growing up in my community,
I really, really had a hard time
All I wanted to do was run around
and play sports and I couldn't as a woman
I was around constant sexism
I wasn't able
to explore my sexuality at all
So my mom took me
out of the community when I was 13,
so I'm very much in debt to her
and grateful for everything she's done
Let's toast
Julia's been doing so much
I'm in awe of you, my love
I love you so much
I want my children
to have every opportunity
I want them to be part
of the outside world
- [Miriam] To Ima!
- Cheers! To family
- [Miriam] To a big Haart
- [Ben] To a big heart
- [woman] Your next meeting's here
- Okay. Send them in
Since the day I took over this company,
it's all about, "The talent is the voice."
When I left Monsey,
I was almost 43 years old,
and I needed to figure out
a way to make money
Ever since I can remember,
I've always loved fashion
So when I left my community,
the first thing I wanted to do
was start a fashion brand,
and I chose shoes
because even in my community,
even though I got flak,
I kept on saying, "Show me a law
that says I can't wear high-heeled shoes."
So my entire life, I've been wearing
high-heeled shoes because I'm tiny
But then what I realized is
I couldn't make shoes for women
that were uncomfortable
So I wanted to free all women
from suffering for beauty
So I started the shoe brand Julia Haart
In one year, I was being sold
in seven countries
And then La Perla bought my shoe brand
I became creative director
of the world's most premier
renowned lingerie brand
I did to clothing the same thing
that I had done to shoes,
is I made it comfortable
Why do we women suffer for beauty?
Because way back when,
some dude had some idea
of what a woman's shape should be
Women were wearing corsets
that literally broke their rib cages,
and made it
impossible for them to breathe
Sorry, that's where I came from,
I don't want anything to do with that
The idea that any woman should suffer
for anything was outrageous to me
So when I was first asked to become
CEO of Elite, we made a deal
Deal was, if I'm taking over,
I'm taking over
We're doing it my way
I want to change and modernize
the entire modeling industry
Our models are not treated like bodies
They are treated with respect
Rob, can you do the combination?
Yes!
If you fuck with Julia,
she will bulldoze you
If you stand in her way,
if you try to block her or her vision,

- Oh, my God!
- [Batsheva] And I warned
- [Julia] He got upset?
- Hey, come on
- How is that even remotely appropriate?
- Because of how we were raised
- I don't care
- and brought up
No one gets to tell you
what to put on your body
Okay, I'm telling you this
and I'm expressing it to you,
- but if you're gonna freak out
- Sorry
- Then I won't tell you
- Okay, okay, I'm going to calm down
He's my best friend,
and when we did get married,
I wasn't at that place, so I still want
to do this journey with him together,
as opposed to just doing it because
I'm like, "I don't care what you think."
So I'm still I'm telling him
that I'm doing it regardless,
but I want I wanted to give him time
to be open to it
[Julia] Okay
I don't think
that Bat would have gotten married at 19
if she didn't grow up
in the environment she did
She was pressured to get married,
and as her sister,
I feel a responsibility to hopefully
help her be able to be independent
I didn't want to say this
in front of everybody else,
but we're in the 21st century
He should not be telling you
I feel you
I feel like you'd be so much farther
if Ben wasn't in your way
[inhales sharply]
I don't think that you're in the place
that you can be judging
You've never been in a long-term
committed relationship with anybody
Your mindset is a little bit tainted
on what relationships should be,
because we did not grow up in a house
where we saw a loving relationship
- Okay
- Right?
Yeah
So I definitely think
that Ima's all about liberation
and whatever and all women's empowerment
We wouldn't be here
without Ima and liberation
Of course, I'm 100% about that
Like, what you're expressing to me
is, like, that on steroids
but without thinking of, like,
what it means to be in a relationship
- But I mean
- I am thinking about that
In a successful marriage,
there is compromise,
there's understanding
It's a give and take
The scale goes up and down,
and nobody else can tell me
how to handle it 'cause it's my life
He's taking a longer time
maybe to get to where I am
Bat, I think you just need
to, like, wake up a little bit, honestly
You just don't know other aspects,
like, you don't know anything else,
and that's why you feel this way
If I'm being really honest with you,
I don't think he's good for you
[sighs] All right,
I'm gonna drink my champagne
Okay
[uplifting music playing]
- Hi!
- [Kai] Hi!
- [Miriam] Good to meet you
- Nice to meet you
[chuckles] Do you want some coffee?
- I do want some!
- Let's do it
[Miriam] Two matcha lattes
with almond milk, please
- Sure
- Thank you
- [Kai laughs]
- [Miriam] So you live in New York?
[Kai] I do. I grew up in Brooklyn
[Miriam] Oh, cool
[Kai] I was home-schooled growing up,
and so it was like, home-schoolers are
really absurd people
- Mm-hmm
- and they're all gay. Every single one
So if you're straight, you were like,
"Oh, you're straight? I'm so sorry."
[Miriam laughing] That's pretty funny
That's, like, so different for me though
Everybody when I was growing up
was super straight
- Seriously? Oh no
- Super straight
Yeah. So, I grew up very, very religious
Wow! Oh, my gosh!
Not only was being gay or being lesbian
Like, it wasn't even a thing
[Kai] My adoptive dad
is conservative Korean
And so it's always like,
"When are you gonna marry a man?"
- [Miriam] Yeah
- [Kai] I'm like, "Never marrying a man."
My dad's like, "What? Like, who are you
gonna marry?" I'm like
- [laughs] Yeah, yeah, yeah
- Like, "Take a guess."
Has no clue, which is really funny to me
My mom never forced anything upon me
I still was religious until I was 16
There is some friction in my family
in terms of my sexuality
So I guess we'll see
how things go with time
- Should we sit next to each other?
- Yeah, obviously
What got you into computer science?
Was that something you were into?
I assume not
Like, I tried coding once,
and I was like "Stop!" [laughing]
- Mm-hmm. Yeah
- It's so hard
Do you think you're gonna make apps
for the rest of your life?
- No
- No?
No
What do you want to do,
like, when you get older?
- Something for women
- Yes!
- [laughing]
- We love women!
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I think women in tech
is, like, so inspiring
I think you being, like, so successful
in what you do is really inspiring
- Thank you
- For a lot of people
You look really pretty
Is it okay if I kiss you?
- Yeah, totally
- Okay
- Thanks
- [both giggling]
Wow
- Should we continue walking?
- Yeah
- Do you want to link arms?
- Yeah
- [Kai] What a cute moment for us
- [Miriam] I know
- [Kai] The gays win today
- [Miriam] Yeah
[Julia sighs] I'm so happy we get to
actually spend a little time together
- [Silvio] Yes. [laughs]
- [Julia] A crazy week
[Silvio sighs]
So much looking forward to this
- Thank you
- [Julia] Thank you
Cheers
We never get alone time
I want to do nothing but kiss you all day
[Silvio] Mmm. I like that
You know what I was thinking last night?
Like, I'm not afraid of much,
like, I don't get nervous,
but this fashion show
freaks me out completely
And
I mean, this is going to sound so goofy,
but it's like being massively naked
in front of millions of people,
and then people make judgments on you
I met you literally like, what,
two years after I came out?
I had my own company,
I was creative director of La Perla,
but I was still inside,
like, this big ball of fear
- I was always afraid that someone
- I remember
Yeah, and someone would say,
"You're such a fraud." Like
"You're a faker,
we know that you don't know anything."
- You were exposed
- To so many horrible people
Horrible people, yeah
I see a strong woman in Julia
She is extremely intelligent and creative
Energy like a small nuclear plant
She is one of the most remarkable persons
that I ever met
After I met you,
whenever I would get really scared,
I would literally say to myself
And I kid you Like, literally, out loud,
I would say,
"Julia, channel your inner Silvio."
- [Silvio chuckles]
- "Channel your inner Silvio."
I love you so much
And it made me stronger
And it's like
my kids and I have that expression
Whenever we're nervous about something,
we say, "Channel your inner Silvio."
When I left Monsey,
my dream for life was to be alone
And then I met Silvio,
and that whole plan went out the window
Here's this guy. Brilliant, brave,
extraordinary human being
He brings fiber optics
into the home for the first time ever
I remember asking Silvio,
"I don't get it
Why would you want to go out with me?"
And he said, "Well, you're not easy,
but easy's boring."
When we got married, he said,
"You made your name from scratch."
"You worked for this name."
"Julia Haart is someone that you created
and you fought for,
and I'm never giving her up."
"I don't know
if you think it's a good idea,
but I'd like to take your name on
instead of you taking mine."
"Haart" is the name
that Julia chose to mark her new life
We are entrusting
our freedom to each other
[guests applauding]
Is that the most romantic,
sweetest thing you have ever heard?
You're my life
- I really love you
- I will not be alive without you
[upbeat music playing]
- Let me go look at the board
- Okay
I want to see
what was the major alteration,
what do we need to refit
- [Michele] That was fine. Yes
- That was fine
This was a lot of alteration
- All the sewers are available?
- All available, yeah
[Miriam] Oh, my goodness. This is so cool!
You're gonna be great
It's gonna be great, it's gonna be great
- It's gonna be awesome
- [Julia] No jinxing it! Stop talking
[Robert] I'm gonna
check the schedule with Jonathan
[Ben] So Batsheva told me
what you spoke to her about
That I was holding her back
I was very hurt
- [Batsheva] And so was I
- [Julia] Guys, what's happening?
Can I hear what's going on? I don't like
all this whispering in my room
I just said that I don't want
anybody holding Batsheva down
It's true. I mean, that's not
a bad thing to say. It's her body
She's an adult woman. She should decide
I'd say the exact same thing to Shlomo
It's not your decision to make
- It wasn't couldn't It just
- Anyway
[Julia] No, I'm sorry
But Miriam, that's all you said?
- I mean, like, it was
- All? It's a little over-the-top
- [Miriam] It was out of love for you
- No. Regardless, it's still hurtful
I was still very hurt
We're still
getting comfortable and expanding
our, you know, religious freedom
This is a very, very, very
big thing for me,
so for me,
it's taking longer to get used to
I've never given a shit about anything
you, Miriam, or Batsheva's worn
- [Julia, sarcastically] Well, thank you
- You're such a good man
- Thank you for approving
- I'm the best
The reason I understand Binyamin,
he's not coming from,
"Oh, you can't wear it 'cause
you're gonna make someone come."
He wants time
It's nothing about controlling women
[Julia] That is what it's about,
you just don't realize
You hear people say,
"They should dress more modestly."
Or, "Oh, women should be more covered."
Hold on one second
That whole concept, men can't control
themselves, is ludicrous
- That's not what this is
- But it is. Where do pants come from?
- It's that a woman's legs are too shapely
- Correct
and a man's
gonna think bad thoughts about her
That's where it comes from
A man should learn
to grow up and control himself,
and a woman should wear
whatever she wants
By me asking her to just give me time
is not me being restrictive of her
All I'm saying
is just let me catch up to you
I'm sorry, that is literally
the most fucking stupid thing
I've ever heard in my life
[tense music playing]
Well, everybody,
this is my personal relationship,
this is nobody else's relationship
Ben has been my rock
between your whole ordeal
We got married,
and you went on your entire journey
I was on my own
And, like, when we weren't talking,
he spoke to you
Right. Well, we weren't talking
because you didn't want to talk to me
I didn't want to talk to you
So he was the one
who kept that bond going
Can I just say one thing?
I've heard what you have to say,
and the rest is between me and Ben
If I asked her
to talk to Ben, fine, but I didn't
I didn't ask her to get involved
I I just want the best for you
So, everyone needs to just back off
and stay in their lane
[Robert] Julia, we're going in
in 15 minutes. Thank you, guys
[announcer] This is the very first show,
the debut collection,
for e1972
We are all so excited to be here
Hey!
[Kai] How are you?
- [woman] Congratulations
- Thanks. I married a genius
- Yes, you did
- [Silvio laughing]
Sorry. I need to talk to you
I have an emergency
- What?
- This look
- Yeah?
- The model has gone missing
She texted me,
"I'm at the police station,"
and I cannot reach her since then
- What the fuck? Where is she?
- In a precinct
- I don't know which one
- A precinct?
- Have you called her?
- I called her 20 times!
We don't have time to alter the clothes
They've been fit for her!
Michele!
- I don't want to be in a position where
- [Donat] We're stuck with nothing
My daughter's fuming at me
I've lost a model
It's minutes before
the show's about to start
What is actually happening here?
- [Robert] Faretta only has one, right?
- [Julia] Two
- Shit
- Okay, Faretta has two
- I'm so excited!
- Yeah!
[announcer] Good evening, everyone
[Donat] Oh my God, that's her! Hello
Where are you, babe?
[Julia] Put her on speaker!
They pulled us all out of the car
and searched us
[Donat] Why did they arrest you?
Is she in the police station by herself?
Babe, hi, it's Julia
[crying] Hi, Julia
I really did not want this to happen
Oh babe, no, don't cry
I'm literally in a fucking cell!
[dramatic music playing]
[energetic music playing]
