Nightflyers (2018) s01e05 Episode Script

Greywing

1 Previously on "Nightflyers" We need to send a probe.
This is our first point of alien contact.
Did it reach the Volcryn? We don't know.
What did you see when you were inside that thing? A message from the Volcryn? It's been out there for over a thousand years.
You brought an L-1 on board? - Yeah, his name is Thale.
- They're murderers! Sir, we're getting error codes.
Isolate the malfunctioning systems.
Cut them off from the rest of the ships.
Send a welding team to Karl D'Branin's quarters.
Give me the time to get the data I need.
My mother can feel this thing inside of her, like a cancer.
Now she's lashing out.
There's no way to predict who she'll hurt.
You can hear your mother.
Words, feelings in my head.
She built this ship to be her home forever.
The Crystal Matrix is her body now.
She's been using the ship to hurt us.
She's in there, and she's real.
She's not going to stop with the Probe.
If you love me [DISTORTED.]
Cynthia! Where are you? [DOOR OPENS IN DISTANCE.]
Cynthia.
You were in my office again, hmm? Where are you? I know you're here.
[FOOTSTEPS REVERBERATE ODDLY.]
I will find you.
Cynthia! Where are you? Cynthia! Cynthia! [GIRL SCREAMS.]
[OMINOUS MUSIC.]
I've never seen anything like this.
Oh, look, another tooth.
Performing my own autopsy.
You should take a break, mate.
You don't need to be here.
In fact, you shouldn't.
There's no way you can be objective about any of this.
Rowan, we are finding chunks of my body in a probe that I built to make contact with alien life.
I just feel like I should be here.
Is something else bothering you? Agatha.
What exactly is the logic of bringing your ex into deep space? - We needed Thale.
- For the mission.
- Yeah, we did.
- That's why we're here.
The mission.
Please, remember that.
[SOFT MUSIC.]
We're never gonna reach the Volcryn unless we deal with Cynthia permanently.
The firewalls can't keep up, and we're losing time.
- We need to lock her out.
- So what's your plan? Well, in order to maintain her consciousness, Cynthia Eris had to build some sort of, um, of an organizing architecture.
Without our bodies to relay sensation, our minds panic.
Which is why she's so dangerous.
- She's frightened.
- Yes.
I need to go in there and find a way to seal her up in that world permanently.
Karl, are you agreeing with this? I don't know.
Whole thing makes me nervous.
You're talking about containment, not death? Yes, your mother's still going to be there, just unable to access the systems of the ship.
And what if you get lost? Or if we lose the connection to you inside there? We lose her.
Forever.
[EXHALES.]
I'm not comfortable with this.
After what happened to you the last time A lot of people endured a lot of pain for me to be in this place.
The memory sphere.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Show her your pain.
It's hers too.
Practice must be brief today.
The Elders are becoming suspicious.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
[DISTANT CHATTER.]
[CLAMORING.]
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
- No! - No! [SCREAMING.]
[TENSE MUSIC.]
You know tech is forbidden.
There are consequences to dissention.
Your gift is worth the pain.
Don't be afraid.
Accept the price.
The hands.
[ELDERS HUMMING.]
[HUMMING CONTINUES.]
[BOTH SCREAM.]
[TENSE MUSIC.]
[SCREAMING ECHOES.]
I'm ready.
It's what I'm here for.
Are you sure that's safe? I'm worried about you.
Before, you wanted to hack that thing out of your arm, and now you've got two.
I need the bandwidth if I'm gonna find Cynthia.
She scared the shit out of you last time.
[DOOR HISSES, WHIRS.]
Are you sure? There are other things on the ship that scare me more.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[HISSING, LIQUID SLOSHING.]
What the hell? Jesus.
Call medical.
[INDISTINCT SHOUTING.]
Onto the table, onto the table.
- Up.
- Tie him down.
[SCREAMS.]
Sedation, sedation.
It's too much blood.
I need a visual.
Wipe him down.
[SCREAMS.]
Stand back, scanning.
- Where is the wound, please? - I can't find it.
Dermal, subdermal, arterial are all intact.
Scissors.
Open material top.
[GROANS.]
Wipe down the wound, please.
Where is it coming from? Where is the wound? - [MACHINE BEEPING.]
- [GRUNTS.]
Stay back, please.
[BEEPING STOPS.]
Okay, everybody, stop, stop! Please, everybody.
We just need to breathe.
Please, just trust me.
Just close your eyes, take deep breaths.
Close your eyes, breathe.
[EERIE MUSIC BUILDS.]
[LAUGHS.]
That was a fucking tour de force performance.
You should have seen the look on your faces.
Ha-ha! Oh, my God.
I-I don't understand.
[LAUGHS.]
You should be ashamed of yourself.
What, you should be ashamed of yourself.
I'm in desperate need of medical assistance.
Hey, you are pushing your luck.
What the fuck else am I supposed to do? I'm bored out of my nut.
Well, you never come and see me, do you? You scared the shit out of me.
Well, I'm sorry.
You look lovely today, by the way.
You can just lay there for a little while, while I go clean up this mess with the crew.
Can you let me out the fucking [GRUNTS.]
[INTENSE MUSIC.]
[FOOTSTEPS APPROACH SLOWLY.]
I was on the Lunar 71 shuttle with my wife and kids.
We were on our way to Luna to spend a week at the water resort.
The L on that flight was one of the first.
Just a little girl.
It all started on takeoff.
You know what takeoff is like, right? The gravity crush, the ship shuddering as if it's gonna break into a thousand pieces.
The kids loved it.
They're laughing, thrilled.
Us adults terrified.
We didn't let it show, of course.
But that little girl She took our normal fear, and she amplified it.
And once that fear was bouncing around, getting bigger and louder, it turned into a wave.
And the next minute, everyone's ripping each other apart.
[MELANCHOLY MUSIC.]
He fuck He fucking [SOBBING.]
Now I can't even remember what my boys look like.
When I think of their faces, all I see is what's left.
It wasn't the little girl's fault, man.
It was too much power for her to control.
That's my point.
All that power, and you never made a damn thing better in this world, have you? [DOOR WHIRS.]
- Hey.
- We can use Thale.
He can connect with Lommie in the Crystal, be like a beacon for her.
You know, pull her out if she's in any trouble.
- We-we can't trust him.
- We have to.
Karl, please, I want him to do something meaningful.
Let him be a part of this team.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Hey, Lommie, look.
It's us.
Thale, are you sure you know what you're doing? Oh, no, not a clue, bruv.
This is uncharted territory.
It's gonna be just fine.
You can do this.
Yeah yeah, yeah, you're gonna have to go.
I can't think straight with all your thoughts bouncing around the room.
No, Thale, I can't leave you.
Agatha, trust me, you've gotta leave.
And he can stay, it doesn't bother me.
He knows what we're up against, but the rest of you Come on, Agatha.
We're gonna trust him, we have to trust him.
You okay? Be careful.
You too, Lommie.
- Are you sure you're ready? - We can't go on like this.
Neither can she.
Go to the monitors in the mission lab.
I need you to open the firewall to let Lommie inside.
Okay.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
You ready for me? Yeah, I guess.
[DRAMATIC MUSICAL FLOURISH.]
Ooh.
Okay.
I can feel you.
All right, don't.
- Don't what? - Be afraid.
I'm just riding with you.
I'm right here.
- Ready.
- Move fast.
She's gonna fight back.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[EDDY CURRENT SUPPRESSION RING'S "WALKING IN UNISON".]
[BLOWS RASPBERRY.]
What brings you, Rowan? I have a, uh, Petri dish full of cells that don't seem to want to die.
Oh, the Probe.
Do tell.
How do you know about that? The Volcryn sent me a message.
[CHUCKLES.]
Come on.
Do you, uh want to take a look? At your space blood? I thought you'd never ask.
[DRAMATIC PULSING.]
[FOOTSTEPS APPROACH SLOWLY.]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
Outside a big house.
There's trees, fog, birds.
Loads of fucking birds.
Fucking birds everywhere.
It's Greywing.
My grandfather's house.
Lommie was right.
My mother created a familiar world.
There's no way in.
Doors are locked, windows are shut.
This place is a fortress.
The doors, the locks.
Those must be my firewalls.
[DOORS PULSATE.]
I wasn't sure how they'd manifest.
- Mel, open the door.
- Already on it.
[COMPUTER WHIRRING.]
[LOCK CLANGS OPEN.]
[HANDLE CLICKS.]
[EERIE MUSIC.]
[FEATHERS RUSTLE.]
[OLD-TIMEY CLASSICAL MUSIC PLAYS IN DISTANCE.]
Someone's here.
[WOOD CREAKS.]
[OLD-TIMEY MUSIC CONTINUES.]
[FOREBODING MUSIC.]
That's my doll.
- Who are you? - We know why you're here.
- We? - [IN DEEP VOICE.]
Us.
Me.
- Cynthia! - Him.
[LOUD THUMPING.]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[VINYL RECORD CRACKLING.]
[DISTORTED.]
I can feel you, Cynthia.
What are you doing? [FEATHERS RUSTLE.]
Get your hand off that door! [BLADE SWISHES.]
[GRUNTS.]
[INTENSE MUSIC.]
[BIRD CAWS.]
[BIRDS CAWING DISTORTEDLY.]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
[ELECTRICITY BUZZES.]
[DISTORTED.]
It's nice to have another toy.
[FEATHERS RUSTLE.]
It's a pity, really.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[GRUNTS.]
Who sent you? - Roy? - Where are we? Home.
Are you here to play? - She's here to trap us.
- I'm here to help.
- To kill us.
- There's someone upstairs.
- Who is it? - A nobody.
- Who is it? - Daddy.
Nothing.
[FOOTSTEPS DISTORT.]
- Is this his house? - No! - We should play with her.
- Playtime is over.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[COUGHING.]
God, I can't stand not being in the room when someone else is solving the problem.
Well, we have to trust Thale, for Lommie's sake.
You said he's strong.
Have you heard from Joy recently? How's she holding up? Yeah, she missed our last video call.
She's undergoing heavy memory release therapy.
Getting rid of anything that reminds her of Skye or me.
My Aunt Luce did that when my father passed away.
She just kept going and going until there was nothing left.
She was gone.
[SCOFFS.]
I mean, she never really came back.
I can't tell Joy what to do, but I'm not gonna do that with Skye.
I don't want to forget about her.
You're doing great, Karl.
Grief is a natural process.
You can't just hide from it.
You just have to face whatever comes your way with an open heart.
[OMINOUS MUSIC.]
Sleeping Beauty's awake.
Uh what happened? Thale managed to pull you out.
You were unconscious for two days.
Two days.
Um, sorry, I couldn't trap her.
She's too strong.
Well, maybe you should have stayed and finished the job.
It's not her fault.
She can't finish anything.
- But I take it you found her? - Pieces.
She was fractured into two subprocesses.
A younger one, uncorrupt.
- The other broken.
- Mm.
- I should go back in, I - No, no, no, no, no.
Rest.
You need to rest.
Cynthia made everything clear.
- She talked to you? - Well, to me, actually.
Yeah, it came through my head clear as a bell.
This mission is over.
[FOREBODING MUSIC.]
I-I don't understand.
- Where's Karl? - Karl was wrong.
The Volcryn aren't what he thought.
They might not even be real.
Maybe we should just kill D'Branin.
That way, we could all go home.
Cynthia lived a difficult life.
Suffered too much.
She built this ship to escape that world.
To fly away from old monsters, not into the arms of new ones.
She put her life into this ship.
It's not meant to be a prison for her.
It's meant to be freedom.
She was I am Everywhere.
[DISTORTED.]
Always listening.
Always watching.
[DISTANT RUMBLING.]
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC BUILDS.]
You knew he was watching? [GASPS.]
We were just having some fun.
We needed to distract long enough to find the break in the firewall you used to get in here.
[SCREAMS.]
I must be off now.
I'll tell Karl you said hello.
No! [GRUNTS.]
[DOOR PULSATES.]
What's happening? It's your mother.
She's out.
Releasing your memories of me, it's okay.
I don't even know if I'm gonna come back from out here anyways, so it's probably for the best, right? [COMPUTER BEEPS.]
[AIR HISSING.]
[HISSING INTENSIFIES.]
[COMPUTER BEEPS.]
Warning, oxygen depleting.
[ALARM BLARING.]
Warning, oxygen 80%.
Help! [ALARM BEEPS.]
Sir, there's a problem with the airflow.
[BEEPING CONTINUES.]
D'Branin's quarters.
Warning, oxygen 60%.
[GASPING.]
- [ECHOING.]
Help! - Warning, oxygen 40%.
[ECHOING.]
Help! Oxygen level critical.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Oxygen level critical.
- Oxygen eliminated.
- Help What's going on? [WHEEZING.]
Karl, stay with us! We're gonna get you out.
- The hatch is disabled.
- What? - Doesn't make sense.
- We gotta get this door open.
Give me that.
Get engineering.
Stand clear.
[BLAST PULSATES.]
- It's not opening! - This doesn't make sense.
- Do something! - I'm on it.
Karl! Karl [CHOKING.]
- Oh, God.
- [BODY THUDS.]
[AIR RUSHING.]
[NO AUDIBLE DIALOGUE.]
[MELANCHOLY MUSIC.]
[ECHOING.]
Karl! Karl! - [GASPS.]
- [GASPS.]
[BREATHING HEAVILY.]
Oh! [MOANS.]
You're okay.
How did you How did you know? We have to get you to medical.
Cynthia.
Cynthia.
She's out.
[COMPUTER PULSATES.]
Power systems error.
Switching to reserve mode.
[ELECTRICITY HUMS.]
Initiating reboot procedure.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
- Thale.
- I tried.
- Where's Lommie? - She's locked in there.
Is she okay? Is she still inside? - I can't find her.
- Is she alive in there? Can you go back inside? Try and reestablish contact with Lommie? She's coming.
Cynthia's coming.
[ELECTRICITY BUZZING HARSHLY.]
Your friends are going to die now.
There's nothing you can do.
You're trapped inside here with me now.
There's no getting out.
Where are you going? What are you going to do? [DOOR THUDS.]
[DOOR THUDS LOUDLY.]
[DOOR THUDS LOUDLY.]
Please stop.
[DOOR THUDS.]
Don't open the door.
It'll bring him back.
[ELECTRICITY BUZZES, DOOR THUDS.]
[INTENSE MUSIC BUILDS.]
[ELECTRICITY WHINES.]
She's not going to like this.
I know.
[DOOR THUDS LOUDLY.]
[THUDDING CONTINUES.]
- [YELLS DISTORTEDLY.]
- Mother's scared.
[DOOR THUDS.]
[DISTORTED VOICE MUTTERS.]
[FEATHERS RUSTLE, BIRD CAWS.]
You came back.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
I wasn't going to hurt your friends.
I just wanted you to behave.
I was angry.
I've been alone in here.
You must understand.
What are you keeping behind this door? It's your father, isn't it? It's not the Crystal that made you like this.
It was him.
He beat us.
He demeaned us.
He tore us down.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
You had trouble with your father too.
I've watched your memories.
You hurt him with that hammer.
That's where you're wrong.
My dad loved me.
It was this fucking world that kicked me in the teeth.
- And I had to - BOTH: Accept the price.
Cynthia! [STATIC SIZZLES.]
[WHIMPERS.]
- Come on! - Please, Dad! [DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Go hide.
Go.
Go, run! [DOOR PULSATING.]
Thale? [ECHOING.]
Thale? Get me out! [LIGHTS CRACKLE.]
[SOFT MUSIC.]
Systems stabilizing.
No trace of malicious code.
Nice work.
How are you feeling? Uh, still a little shaky, I guess.
- Roy.
What is it? - I can't hear her voice.
- For the first time, it's quiet.
- You're welcome.
Hey.
I'm proud of you.
We should get you back to the Dome.
We could all use some rest.
What was it? Her weakness? We all have secrets.
Parts of our past we'd rather forget.
And is she okay? Where she is? Is it peaceful? - Is it secure? - I locked her out.
You did so good.
I need to go lie down.
Here, let me help you.
You saved our lives, and the mission.
Go ahead.
Release me.
I want you to start over.
I just want you to be happy.
[COMPUTER BEEPS.]
[COMPUTER BEEPS.]
[RADIOHEAD'S "DAYDREAMING".]
[BASS THROBS.]
[DISTANT SCREAMING.]
[THROBBING.]
Dreamers [DISTANT SCREAMING.]
They never learn [THROBBING.]
They never learn Beyond the point Hey.
Of no return I was looking for you.
You weren't in your quarters.
Yeah, I couldn't sleep.
- Tell me what's wrong - Don't touch me.
You let him watch us.
How many times were we together with Eris there watching? He watches everything.
I don't understand what the big deal is.
Where was my voice in that decision? The white room Okay, I'm sorry.
I really am, I'm sorry.
Don't come to my room anymore.
Where the sun comes through [COMPUTER CHIMES.]
We are Open.
Lights.
Is everything okay? Everything's fine.
Just happy to serve I heard your voice.
You were in my head.
You called me back.
And when I opened my eyes, I was glad it was you.
Tell me if this actually makes any sense.
- Okay.
- Cells can speak chemically to other cells across vast distances inside our bodies, whilst animals, like bees, butterflies, or ants, can speak wordlessly across vast distances outside their bodies.
Could someone, in theory, use those methods to communicate across galaxies? You mean, use them like a radio or a telephone? Yeah.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
A human being.
One of two tin cans at either end of a very long, invisible string.
I mean, these-these cells, they are transmitting.
Maybe just to one another, but maybe You think the Volcryn sent the Probe back to talk to us? I think they sent it back to listen.
Activate display 337, please.
[SCREEN PULSATES.]
[UNEASY MUSIC.]
Hello, beautiful.
My body is failing, Auggie.
But this is not good-bye.
I will always be here, close to you.
I will always love you, little bear.
[VIOLENT RATTLING.]
