[tense music playing]
- [Sally] Thank you.
- [Ingrid] No!
- [Sally] Yes, it's kismet.
- Congratulations.
[all] Cheers!
- It's got to be at Hartley, right?
- [Edward] Obviously.
We've not really decided on anything yet.
- Well, the engagement party at least?
- The what?
- Mum, let's not freak her out too much.
- [Sally chuckles]
Sorry, this family can get a bit intense.
Oh, speaking of intense, your auntie Ellen
sent me a video message. Let me show you.
- [Sally] Let's see.
- [Edward] Oh no.
[Ingrid] She's adorable.
[Jay] She's not though.
Have a look at this.
[Ellen] So excited to hear your news.
I can't wait to see you
and give you a big old hug.
- [Ellen continues]
- Excuse me.
- It's not upside down.
- The Botox looks great.
[Ellen] Maybe meet in London
next time I'm down.
[Ingrid] Yeah, she has had a bit.
Too much in her upper.
- [Edward] She's had a bit of work done?
- Yeah.
- [Edward] Has she?
- [Ingrid] No.
[Jay] Looks natural.
[exhales sharply]
[door opens]
Anna. What are you do
[door closes gently]
What happened in Paris was a one-off.
This all falls apart
if we don't stick to the rules.
- I need to tell you
- Wait.
Please.
[tense music playing]
There is no version of this with just you.
Or just him?
[whispers] I love everything
about what we have.
I don't want to lose it.
Are you able to control yourself?
Yeah.
Good.
Hold on.
I've been getting messages.
I don't know who they're from,
but they know.
About us.
- [ominous music playing]
- [William] I haven't responded.
When did they start?
Uh, the night Jay proposed.
Anna.
I'll handle it.
When we're with your family, watch me.
If I touch my hair,
it means I'm thinking about what we'll do
the next time we're together.
[William] When?
[Anna] Hmm.
Soon.
[door opens]
[door closes]
[darkly tense music playing]
Actually, can we make a quick stop
at Bexley Avenue? It's not too far.
Anna?
Um a friend.
I'd like to see her.
Tell her the wonderful news.
Really?
Who?
Hmm. A childhood friend.
Peggy.
First I've heard of her.
I'm excited to meet her.
Not tonight, if you don't mind.
[Peggy] What's going on?
You need to stop texting him.
- What?
- [Anna] You think you're helping.
- But you're not.
- I don't know what you're talking
You've been texting William, threatening
to tell his wife. You need to stop.
Oh fuck.
Yeah.
- Someone else knows.
- You know.
Why would you think it's me?
I have never involved myself
in your love life. Why would I start now?
So, who is it?
[intercom buzzes]
Jay proposed.
And what did you say?
[Anna] Yes.
[intercom buzzes]
This is him, isn't it?
- I'll go down.
- I want to meet him.
[tense music playing]
- [Peggy] Hello.
- It's Jay.
[Peggy] Come up. [replaces handset]
I just want to say hello.
Top floor.
[footsteps approaching]
[Jay exhales sharply]
Hey.
- You must be the mysterious Peggy.
- [Peggy] I am.
Now I get it.
[chuckles] Get what?
[chuckles coyly] Why I'm marrying you.
I'm sorry you came all the way up.
I was just coming down.
We need to go.
[Peggy] That's a shame.
- Nice to meet you.
- [Peggy] Nice to meet you.
[sighs]
[Jay] I came up
because I want to meet your friend.
Because I love you,
and we're getting married,
and I want the people in your life
to be in mine. Anna!
I haven't even met your mum.
You will. I promise.
You'll meet her at the engagement party.
Good.
[gentle rattling]
[cell phone vibrating]
[rain pattering]
Yeah?
Look, I know you can't talk,
but I need to know if I should be worried.
You've done some really fucked-up things
in the past, and this just feels
[Anna] I'm fine.
Well, I don't know how you can be.
What are you trying to achieve?
[Anna] I have it all under control.
Has your mum met Jay yet?
- No.
- [Peggy] I'll be at the engagement party.
When she sees him, you'll need me.
Night, Peggy.
[footsteps on stairs]
- It's not Peggy.
- I can't bear this, Anna.
- What if they tell Ingrid?
- [Anna] Any idea who it might be?
- [William] I've been so careful.
- Any friends you've spoken to?
[sighs] There's a woman at work.
A colleague.
I don't think she likes me much.
She may have found out about us,
but I don't think she's capable of this.
[Anna] Invite her to the engagement party.
- What? Wait, no. Anna.
- Give me your phone.
[William] What are you doing?
Surviving.
[throws down phone]
[Anna breathes heavily]
[exhales sharply]
[Anna breathes heavily]
[Anna moans rhythmically]
- [gasps]
- [William grunts]
- [groans loudly]
- [Anna pants]
[distant chattering]
- [indistinct chattering]
- [pop music playing softly]
- Really happy for you.
- You met Anna?
Nice to meet you. I'm Joan.
- [Jay] Thank you.
- Sir.
[Anna] Thank you.
Dutch courage.
They're a bunch of bloody animals.
Yeah, well, so am I.
- [man 1] Jay.
- [man 2] Evening.
[Jay] Who invited you?
- [man 1] Congratulations.
- [Jay] Thank you. [chuckles]
[man 3] Congratulations.
[Jay] Thank you.
Thank you.
Jay's fiancée? I'm Nadia.
How lovely of you to come all this way.
Well, William and I have worked together
for a long time now.
Oh. You must be close, then?
Well, I have a lot of respect for William.
He's one of the best we've got.
That's not what I asked.
Right. [chuckles]
I can't say I've managed
to get past the small talk yet.
[chuckles] You're not alone,
put it that way.
Well, you're here.
Perhaps it's the start of him opening up.
[scoffs] Don't hold your breath.
[laughs] It's great to meet you.
[indistinct chattering in background]
[Peggy] There you are.
- You made it.
- [Peggy] 'Course I did.
[cork pops]
[liquid pouring]
It's not Nadia.
How do you know?
She has her opinions about you,
but she doesn't know about us. Trust me.
I got another one.
[Anna] What did it say?
"If you don't tell her, I will."
[woman] Thank you.
I need you to pull it together.
[chatter in distance]
[Anna] You came.
Of course I did.
This is my mother, Elizabeth.
- [Elizabeth] Jay's father?
- So glad you could join us.
It's lovely to finally meet.
Oh.
I don't know about you, but it's all felt
rather clandestine from my end.
Where's this mysterious fiancé of yours?
[indistinct chattering, laughter]
Jay. Jay, meet Elizabeth.
Mum, this is Jay.
It's a pleasure.
I'm so glad to finally meet you.
[Elizabeth] Anna, why didn't you tell me?
Tell you what?
I suppose it's not that strong
a resemblance, really. Just
You look so very much
like my late son, Aston.
- Anna's brother.
- No, he doesn't.
- [Elizabeth] Anna, his eyes
- Mum!
This is so inappropriate.
Honestly, you don't. Mum!
It's just, um,
an impression, that's all.
You're very handsome.
Well, thank you, I suppose.
Oh, Mum! You'll have to meet
my mother now.
This is Elizabeth.
[Ingrid] Oh, Elizabeth.
[indistinct chatter]
I'll keep an eye on her.
[tense music playing]
[cell phone chimes]
[laughter in background]
[Anna] Can I have one?
[Sally] You smoke?
No.
[cell phone chimes]
[Sally] Look, I'm so sorry to do this,
but would you hate me
if I fucked off after the fireworks?
Oh. Take me with you.
Are you all right?
[Sally] No.
Sorry.
What's going on?
Kelly dumped me.
Yesterday.
[Anna] I'm sorry.
Yeah, well, I think there's someone else.
I don't want to bring a downer
on all this. I I don't. It's your night.
- It's your mum's night, really.
- [chuckles softly]
My brother really loves you, you know?
That's so rare.
[babble of voices, laughter]
[Ingrid] Where's Anna? Where's Anna?
And Sally as well. Come on.
Where's Sally?
Can I have your attention, everyone.
I just want to say a few words.
- Jay, where's Anna?
- Anna, come on.
[Ingrid mutters]
[Sally] Dad!
[Ingrid] Thank you so much, everyone,
for coming. You all look divine.
- [man] Yay!
- [Ingrid] Um [chuckles]
I'm afraid you've just got me.
Uh, my husband is saving himself
for the wedding.
Clearly only does the headline acts.
- Yep, he's the main attraction. Exactly.
- [laughter]
- [Ingrid] He's not funny at all though.
- [raucous laughter]
[Ingrid] No, but seriously, we're here
to talk about marriage, aren't we?
- Jay and Anna.
- Here we go.
Now, as we know, marriage is about trust.
And
I have a confession to make, William.
I've been spying on you.
The other day, I went to your work,
and you weren't there.
[tense music playing]
[Ingrid] And the wonderful Nadia
let me wait in your office.
But you didn't materialize.
Now, what is a wife to do
when she's alone in her husband's office?
She rifles.
- [Ingrid laughs]
- [guests chuckle, mutter]
[Ingrid] And what I found, well
I found a set
of four grainy passport photos
of William and I in our early days.
We found a photo booth, and we said,
"When we're old [chuckles wryly]
and we've got kids and a mortgage,
we will look at these,
and we will remember
the love that we felt right then."
[chuckles softly]
Well, I don't need to be reminded of that
because the fact
that you held onto them for so long
shows me that it's still there.
[chuckles] Which which brings me to say,
to Jay and Anna
[indistinct muttering]
if if you nourish and protect
the foundation of your love,
it will last you for years to come.
And we are both so excited for you.
William and I both are.
Please raise your glasses
for a toast to Jay and Anna.
[guests] To Jay and Anna!
[cheering, applause]
[Ingrid] Enjoy the fireworks, everyone!
[guests chattering]
[exhales sharply]
[Ingrid sighs]
I hope it wasn't too cheesy.
No. No, it was wonderful.
[distant chattering]
Hmm. May I?
Um, I'm fine. Thank you, Elizabeth.
[Elizabeth winces]
[William inhales sharply]
You really should be more careful.
[tense music playing]
What did you say to him?
I saw the way he was looking at you.
- Mum!
- [Elizabeth] It's not proper, is it?
Please tell me it's nothing.
I need you to drop it.
- [firework explodes in distance]
- [guests cheer]
Of course, my darling.
[chuckles awkwardly]
I'm sure you have
everything under control.
- [fireworks exploding in distance]
- [guests cheering]
- [tense music intensifies]
- [fireworks crackling, whistling]
[guests cheering]
[tense music fades]
I love you.
And I love you, Anna.
Mum hasn't scared you off, has she?
Oh no.
[whispers] I'm just
learning to love the questions.
You know you can tell me about him.
All you need to know is that I've never
felt that close to anyone until I met you.
[foxes barking in distance]
[sighs shakily]
[Anna] They were bluffing.
You're not worried about who it was?
No.
What your mum said about Jay.
Is that true?
[exhales slowly]
I can't deal
with the idea of you needing him
more than you need me.
Even if he does look like Aston,
that's where it ends.
He's nothing like him.
He's not cruel.
He doesn't need to possess me.
What did Aston do to you?
What happened the night that he died?
I finally said no to him.
He came into my bed.
I said no, and
he destroyed himself.
Stop. Stop it.
I don't want pity.

[Anna] Thank you.
[Sally] How does it look?
[Anna sighs]
Like a bridesmaid's dress.
[Sally] Smashed it.
What's wrong?
I don't really know
who else to talk to about this.
[Anna] What is it?
It's Dad.
I think he's having an affair.
[sighs] Uh, I've been sending these texts.
God, it sounds so stupid,
but I was trying to get him to end it.
I had to stop.
After we spoke at the party, I couldn't be
the one to fuck up my parents' marriage.
How can you be sure?
[tense music playing]
I found something.
Look.
Where did you find it?
[Sally] Um,
he'd just come back from Brussels.
I I wore his coat to go to the shop.
It was in the pocket.
It it it's seriously fucked up.
Like, what was he doing over there?
It can't have just been a work trip.
It was me.
The handwriting. It's mine.
I'm sorry if you think that's fucked up,
but it's me. It's
I I write things down
so I can process them.
I don't know how else to.
B but why did Dad have it?
He found it at Hartley, and
he said he'd look after it
until he could get it back to me.
I've been paralyzed by the idea
that he'd read it, and now you have too.
I I'm so sorry.
I thought
I hope you understand
that what you've discovered,
it doesn't change my love for Jay.
Please, you have nothing to explain.
[Anna] I feel so embarrassed.
Don't be. Fucking hell.
Thank you.
- [Sally] Let's go get a drink. Yeah?
- Yeah.
- [both chuckle]
- I need to get out of this sodding dress.
[tense music continues]
[door closes]
[tense music fades out]
Sally had it.
She was the one sending the messages.
- So so does she
- [Anna] No.
No, she doesn't.
Why did you need to take it?
I'm yours.
Are you?
[tense music playing]
You're on every single page.
What did you write for today?
- [Jay] Hi. How are you?
- [Peggy] Well. You?
[Jay] Good. Thanks for seeing me.
[Peggy] Pleasure. Would you like
to come through, have a coffee?
- [Jay] Yeah.
- Great.
Anna's not a great one for reminiscing,
so what I know about her life before me
is full of gaps, which is fine, of course.
But it does make writing
a decent speech about her a bit tricky.
[chuckles] Right.
So, you'd you'd like some anecdotes?
- Something like that.
- [Peggy] Mm. [clears throat]
Does she love me?
Well, I
I think that's something
only Anna can answer.
- I shouldn't have asked.
- [Peggy] No, you shouldn't, but
Look, Jay
Anna will never be ordinary.
I mean, that's probably
why you love her, actually. [laughs]
But, uh, it it it means that
it means that your relationship,
her love for you,
will never be ordinary either.
And I I wouldn't blame you if you
if you decide
that you can't deal with that.
And if so, you can still walk away.
But, no but but
but if you're going to be with Anna,
going to marry her,
then trust me,
don't go looking
where she tells you not to.
