Onside: Major League Soccer (2025) s01e01 Episode Script

Back to Glory

The MLS hit me like a tidal wave.
There are few things in life
that you're prepared for.
Going into the chaos
every game,
my eagerness to be great will take over.
This is a big moment. I gotta perform.
You make a mistake, boom, out.
That's the big thing in the MLS.
Anyone can beat anyone.
Every single one of ya.
Starters, finishers, be fucking ready.
- One, two, three. Let's go.
- Team! Let's go!
Let's go!
Good evening and welcome
to Major League Soccer in 2024.
Yes, what's up, boss?
Does any group of individual superstars
guarantee success?
Absolutely not. We're only humans.
There's always someone
that is better, faster, stronger.
You just gotta keep up.
The Philadelphia Union
has signed 14-year-old Cavan Sullivan
for the largest homegrown contract
in Major League Soccer history.
All eyes are on soccer
in the United States.
St. Louis is officially
the newest expansion club.
This is soccer. This is the life.
- We suffer together for that.
- How is that so complicated?
Coaches need to have our bags ready
at the door of our houses
because you never know
when is the last day.
Talent… doesn't matter, guys!
If that was Messi on the ground
it would've been a yellow.
2024…
It's in!
I would like a championship.
There's a chill in the air for a rivalry
that might be the league's best.
The reality's
what my brain's gonna do under pressure.
The legend for Cincinnati.
You gotta be
a bit of an asshole sometimes.
Fuck off!
…and how much of this,
emotionally, is about revenge.
Do we fucking sack him?
- What's up, dude? You good? Having fun?
- Yes.
Shit. Nice hair, dude.
- Dad!
- What are you laughing at?
This is why you play soccer.
Ice man!
You know, I'ma start calling you Frozone.
This is a massive moment
to have exceptional players
playing in this country.
But you can't celebrate too much,
because this league… it's a tough league.
And anything can happen.
I must admit,
we're pretty happy at the moment.
You know, my dream was always
to bring the best players to Miami.
It's not just about
bringing the best player there ever was.
We've brought in four superstars
in our team.
Something that we probably haven't seen…
a crew like this, assembled,
going into a season that we have now,
with Messi, with Alba, with Busquets,
with Luis Suárez…
Our vision… we wanted to create
one of the biggest clubs in the world,
and I just think it's good for the sport,
I think it's good for the club,
I think it's great for the league.
…public park.
My first meeting with David,
we shared a vision as we just don't wanna
be another Major League Soccer club.
Most importantly to both of us,
is that it'd be a global team.
We're building our Galácticos.
We always wanna have players
that attract global attention.
I'd like to think that
if we're able to seize the moment,
we will be successful and people will
always look at this and say,
"Hey, the guys at Inter Miami
changed Major League Soccer
to be one of the best leagues
in the world."
But to be able to achieve this,
it's about winning.
These are players
with an impeccable track record.
These guys are completely
focused on winning.
Come on, Yanni. Don't worry.
Don't focus on that.
Tata Martino,
who knows this league,
who's won this league…
Atlanta. It is over!
Good. Great try.
Never in the history of the game
has a team had so much investment.
They are the evil empire, if you will,
but you have to be great.
You have to win it all.
And if you don't, it's a massive failure.
I think that LA is a "what have you done
for me lately" town.
You know, you gotta win,
you gotta show out,
you gotta entertain the crowd,
and the Galaxy ethos before my arrival
was a star-driven franchise.
Beckham, room to shoot.
David Beckham! Oh, goodness!
I'm Will Kuntz.
I'm the general manager
of the Los Angeles Galaxy.
All right.
Being international stars is hardwired
into the DNA of the Galaxy.
The hot seat.
The arrival of David Beckham…
really kind of ushered in
an era of American Galácticos.
Robbie Keane, Landon Donovan,
Steven Gerrard, Zlatan Ibrahimovic…
incredibly important, massive players.
But I'd rather have guys who are 25,
26 years old.
So, what we've tried to do
is focus on young, up-and-coming players,
be part of their development and be part
of their journey on to the highest level.
I think those established stars
were maybe at the end of their career.
And you're seeing
something great happen in real time
which is also a very Hollywood story.
We have first game
against Inter Miami, guys.
It's gonna be tough, interesting to play…
against Messi and other guys.
You never played against Messi, right?
I have, of course.
And he scored.
Of course he scored.
You're fast, but you're not that fast.
He was faster than me, man.
We know Miami has great players
who've played in Europe.
All we can do is be ourselves,
play the way we've been playing
in preseason
and making sure that we finish our chances
whenever we have it.
If we all work hard for 90 minutes,
we can win the game.
In the first match,
Julián was more interested
in asking Messi for his jersey,
than in playing.
No, no, they're coming after you now.
Follow him with the camera!
I am Riqui Puig. I'm from LA Galaxy.
I want to be one of the best players
in MLS.
I started with academy and Barcelona,
one of the best clubs in the world.
When I decide to come here,
the coach told me that
"You're gonna be
one of the best players in the team."
- Riqui Puig…
- It's gone in!
Riqui Puig, what an incredible player.
He has a baby face, but his talent shines,
especially since the moment
that he got to the Galaxy.
Come on, Riqui!
No, no, no!
Let's go! Let's go!
- Again.
- Keep the game going forward!
Doesn't need to be in a rush, guys.
- Again!
- Move the ball!
Fuckin' not that hard.
My name is Greg Vanney.
I'm the head coach of the LA Galaxy.
Body, people, body!
Come on, recover! Come on!
The Galaxy used to be a trendsetter
and a club that is driving
Major League Soccer forward.
And now, Miami's sort of
taken that responsibility over.
Inside, Gino, inside!
Chris! Wider, Chris!
It's my job to figure out how to rebuild
this club back to where it needs to be.
Easy! Close up, Miguel! Close up!
The biggest club in the league,
the top club, globally.
Good. Perfect.
Well, Greg is the captain
of the ship for us,
and he knows the league.
So he believes
that we're on the right track,
and we're all convinced that we can do it.
We are pushing hard,
and we're focused on making sure
that this group takes the right steps
to be able to get there.
Play your numbers. Play the numbers!
The history and the legacy
of the Galaxy demands that.
The first championship in history
for Major League Soccer.
In defense, number 18, Greg Vanney.
You know,
I started watching MLS back in 1996.
It was a smaller league, a different time.
Major League Soccer's inaugural season.
I remember seeing
those old-school D.C. United teams,
Los Angeles Galaxy teams, MetroStars.
From then to now, the growth
of the league had been massive.
It is a packed house…
It speaks to where the league is at,
it speaks to the prominence of the Galaxy.
The MLS Cup champions.
The LA Galaxy have won more championships
than any other club in MLS.
You know, that's something
that is known around the world.
And so, a player from Barcelona
who was regarded as one of the most
promising youths in global football
at still a very prime age,
was willing to come to the Galaxy.
And be sort of the bedrock
of pushing the Galaxy forward
into new heights.
But before that, it's been a fallow period
the last ten years.
We haven't lifted a trophy since 2014.
And it's been hard to get over the hump
and become super relevant.
I've been coaching the LA Galaxy
for three and a half years now.
Last year…
the worst year I have ever had
in being involved in professional soccer.
And that will be
the final action of the match.
Greg Vanney can start that rebuild,
start the planning for next season
and put this one to bed.
You guys have missed the playoffs
two out of the last three years.
The narrative from the outside right now
is worst start in terms of points,
complete mismanagement at all levels,
you know, that this is the lowest point
in Galaxy history.
For me, it's total bull,
but people can have their opinions.
They're allowed to their opinions,
and it's noise.
And the only thing that we can do,
as a group that is very close
from top to bottom in our organization,
is we understand it's us against
whoever wants to talk about us.
That's no problem, no problem.
I'm a big believer in, you know,
holding ourselves to that high standard.
Nobody should have an expectation
of keeping their job.
I wish we were more successful.
Right? It's been difficult.
You feel all of those feelings
of embarrassment, humiliation.
It's a bragging-rights game,
and on the other side of town,
I think there's really a lack of respect
for the Galaxy.
We want better!! We want better!!
You can see it in the stands,
with our own fans…
We have to be realistic
about where we are in the league.
It's a tough league.
It's a tough league to win a championship,
but as an owner of Miami,
going back to LA,
you know, we want to win the game.
Simple as that.
It's always nice to see my statue
outside the front of the stadium as well.
The hard part
is when you have to earn it back
from people who used to play
for the Galaxy,
or call themselves a Galaxy player,
but then they like
to run their mouths about stuff.
That's the stuff that, for me,
they get me a little fired up, yeah.
That's those guys.
Those…who? Which guy?
Doesn't matter.
I think that I share with my fellow owners
that we all want this league to be better,
that we want this to be one of
the top two or three leagues in the world,
and how do we get there?
And I think that we're immensely poised
to do great things.
And I know that we've led by example
with everything we've done with signing
Messi, Jordi, Suárez and Busi
and everything.
And I think we've shown our fellow owners
in the league of what's possible.
But what is it that we need to push?
Right now the momentum is unique,
with Messi and all the other guys
that came here.
We're showing a path
that we need to change gears
and go into another chapter.
More push for the marquee player.
We've all talked about here,
"How do we take a list of
the 75 or 100 best players in the world
and try to get a quarter of them,
20 to 25 of them, in this league."
Yes we've got great players here
at the moment
with, obviously,
Leo and Sergio and Jordi and Luis,
but we have to always look forward.
We also have to have conversations about,
"Okay, where do we go next?
What do we do next? Who do we bring in?"
And I think this is a league
that really needs stars.
The number-one-selling football jersey
on the planet
is Inter Miami's pink Messi jersey.
Hopefully ten years from now
I'd like to have
the greatest-selling jersey
on the face of the earth.
Let's become a machine at just bringing
the world's greatest players here.
If we fail at doing this,
we've done all of ourselves an injustice.
Inevitably, when you have players
with their characteristics in a team,
well, you expect results.
Obviously, there is also pressure
in that regard,
in the fight to win the league.
One, two, three,
four, five…
Good! Six!
Don't, relax. Don't relax. Don't relax.
The objective
is to bring in younger players,
more dynamic players,
who complement Riqui and each other.
I'm an attacking coach,
an attacking-minded team
and we want young players who can
go attack this league and be entertaining.
Give ball!
Give ball!
He's still a young player who
hasn't necessarily had the responsibility
to have to be "the guy" on his team.
Aah, dude, that was so ugly!
You guys are good to go.
The next step in his evolution is for him
to be "the guy" on our team.
Okay.
Looks good, huh?
Ah, fantastic.
When are the others coming?
They said around 3 p.m.
So, have a little taste.
- How's that?
- It's gonna be so hot…
Good or not?
It's not the meat
we have in Barcelona, but…
Well, no…
- We do what we can here.
- Yeah.
Are you missing Barcelona?
You do?
Not the weather.
The weather is much better in LA.
What do you miss most about home?
I think walking around Barcelona,
doing stuff with friends,
the fact that you don't need a car,
living downtown.
In Los Angeles,
you have to drive everywhere.
Growing up in Barcelona,
in my family, in the TV, it's always,
like, watching soccer games.
Barcelona, it's one of
the best teams in Europe and in the world.
When I was really young, my father
bring me to see the games of Barcelona.
I think it's a dream of all the kids
to play soccer in Barcelona.
The majority of us, at 18 years old,
were finishing up high school.
Here's this kid at 18, brushing shoulders
with the world's greatest ever player
in, arguably,
the world's greatest ever team.
That was Riqui Puig.
It was an experience
that I'll never forget.
Five years ago, you're watching this guy
at home with your dad and your mom,
and now you're walking together
to the training session.
Riqui Puig ticked so many boxes.
He's Catalan, blessed with skill,
good-looking kid.
Another one of the Barça prospects
that you think
is gonna make that breakthrough,
but there's just something lacking.
There's something missing.
Not every story has a happy ending.
As time progressed,
it was a bit difficult for him,
because then Xavi became the coach
and of course in that midfield,
there was a lot of competition as well
and he wasn't getting much opportunity.
And it came to a point where Riqui
wasn't invited back to training.
When Xavi arrived, he told me that
the following year he wouldn't need me.
I went to training,
and he said I didn't need to show up.
To have your idol be the one
who tells you to pack your bags
and leave your boyhood club?
I don't envy that moment one bit.
That was one of the toughest moments
in my career.
Still, we accepted it,
looked for another team,
which turned out to be the Galaxy.
At that age, making the decision
to go to Major League Soccer,
you can't go there.
It's the end of your career.
There had to be a sense of humility
with Riqui, saying,
"I need a fresh start."
What do you like most about here?
I think that the team we have,
they're all from Argentina, Uruguay,
and they all speak Spanish.
That also makes
for a very good relationship
within the locker room.
But I have to admit that this team is
much more welcoming than
the one in Barcelona.
Well, at the end of the day,
that's also what makes you
- feel more supported, isn't it?
- Yeah.
I like to make
a lot of barbecues in my house.
Let's eat!
I invite a lot of teammates.
- How's it going, captain?
- What's up, dude?
We are like a family, you know?
And I think that we spend a lot of time
outside the field
and I think it's really important
to be a good group inside the field.
Is it edible or not?
Oh, it's great.
Really good.
Amazing.
When Riqui came here,
I couldn't believe
that a player of that magnitude
would come at such a young age to Galaxy.
I don't know what the problem was
in Barcelona,
but I'm happy to have him.
Good game to start the season.
- We're looking forward to it.
- Wow, I can't wait.
Yes, we have a rather difficult
start to the season, but…
we're going to do well.
We trust the team.
When you come from Barcelona,
you always need to prove
that you come from Barcelona, you know?
It's one of the best clubs of the history,
and I think that you need to prove a lot.
Messi could wake up
at the very last second and…
…he can make the difference
in the last minute.
When he wakes up, he's unbelievable.
Hopefully he won't.
- What's the stadium going to be like?
- Full.
A ton of people.
More people wearing
the Miami jersey than the Galaxy jersey.
Wouldn't that be wild?
And now I want to smash, you know?
To make an impact
really, really, really big.
This year has to start
with pressure for sure, huh?
Yes, a little bit of everything too, huh?
- If you miss a PK, I'll kill you.
- No, no.
"Don't kill me."
And all I did was find the ball here,
sprint the first time across,
this forward had to get around this stick,
come through here
and get in front of this guy.
As we build our roster, Riqui is
the conductor of our style of play
in terms of driving our team.
He changes the tempo
and the rhythm of the game.
He's a massive part.
It's also the pieces we place around him
that can help bring out his qualities.
Hi.
Nice to meet you.
Got you a welcome scarf.
Today I am excited to welcome
the club's newest designated players.
LA Galaxy forward, Joseph Paintsil.
LA Galaxy forward, Gabriel Pec.
Really excited
to add these guys to the roster.
They have the speed and they're both
goal-scoring wingers
that are younger, that are dynamic.
Gonna bring another level to our team.
All right, guys,
a couple of announcements:
Joseph's visa was approved.
- Gabriel, welcome.
- Yeah!
All right, let's go. Let's get in.
Drive. Drive at speed. Don't slow it down.
Keep the speed up!
Joseph and Gabriel,
adding them to our group
is gonna open up so many opportunities.
Guys with speed and guys
who open up the width of the field.
Now, Riqui,
when he has space and he has runners,
he's gonna be more effective in creating
goal-scoring opportunities, assists.
Come on. Go, Riqui.
Let me get your thoughts on
how quickly can you
integrate them into the lineup?
Well, they… The plan is
that they will be involved on Sunday,
so it's go time for these guys.
Diego!
There's only so many games
that really get people's attention.
To open the season against Miami,
the stadium's gonna be full,
the viewership is massive.
Definitely an opportunity
to put a marker down.
All right, good stuff today.
We got ourselves ready to go.
It's exciting that we got this game in
front of us and get this season rolling.
With a good result
and a good performance with Miami,
the narrative about us changes,
showing that we're ready
to be contenders for championships
and that we can be
one of the best teams in this league.
It'll be like playing a final
in the first game of the season,
so defensively,
we don't want Messi floating around,
and when they have time and finding
little pockets to pick up the ball
and hurt us. We gotta make sure
that we're communicating
what different areas he's showing up so
that we can eliminate some of his service.
Every time Messi touches the ball,
it's dangerous.
They have Jordi Alba and Busquets
playing these quick passes.
It really will be just trying to… survive.
Leaving it for Jordi Alba…
Back to Lionel Messi!
Between him and Busquets,
they'll find him.
Yeah. Defensively,
Riqui's gonna have to pick up Busquets.
It's gonna be a game of opportunities.
We have to take ours.
And we got to minimize theirs,
'cause the quality they have up top,
they don't need a ton of chances. Right?
We are not the favorite of this game.
As a player, you naturally
want to outperform the others.
But Messi, Jordi Alba, and Busi,
they're on a different level.
So, playing against them
and beating them is a big deal for me.
- How are you?
- Hi, Riqui.
- What's your name?
- Andre.
My favorite clubs are Barcelona
and The Galaxy.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
And your favorite players?
- Players?
- Yes.
Messi and you.
- Yeah?
- Yes.
But being able to compete against them,
It's a crucial moment for me.
- Thanks so much.
- Awesome. Bye, Andre.
- Thanks, Riqui.
- No, thank you.
When you are playing soccer
in the best team of the world,
all the people want to know
how is Barcelona,
when you started in Barcelona,
how many years you played with Messi.
It's always the same questions.
See you. Bye, guys.
It is a picture-perfect day
as we start the 2024 season.
It's in!
Mateusz Bogusz with a spectacular goal!
For a seventh straight year,
LA FC open the season with a win.
…the right move.
Might not be what's required for now.
Bedoya, in to Martínez.
The first-time cross.
And the header is in!
Dániel Gazdag!
There it is. Supporters' Shield 2023.
In some corners of the league,
the debate rages.
There's only one MLS Cup champion,
there's also only one Shield winner.
For Cincinnati, that was won
with 69 points a year ago.
Got it from Adeniran.
He gets there ahead of Vera.
A really good touch by Sam Adeniran.
In behind. Can he pull this one back?
He's gonna go for goal himself!
Adeniran off the bench!
To the left side, playing ahead.
Flag stays down for Rossi.
Works it across!
Guzan got a flick to it. Cucho! Oh, boy!
He's off and running in 2024!
Cucho Hernández and the Crew
with a one-nothing lead!
Let's go! Yeah! Galaxy!
All these little Messi marks are here
to see Messi in greatness.
They're gonna see the greatness
that is the LA Galaxy.
I have a secret. I'm gonna be honest.
But don't show this guy.
I'm here for one player.
The LA Galaxy, they're about to cry.
And my uncle's gonna cry too.
Beck!
Beck!
Riqui!
- What's up?
- What's up?
Damn! You're good looking!
It's good hair.
Moving to the LA Galaxy,
it was very special.
You know, it feels like home.
If we score and we win,
I'll be celebrating.
If we don't win the game, then I'll be
hiding in the back of the box.
Riqui, obviously
people are talking about Sunday's game,
the first of the season.
but undoubtedly, Messi's name
will always be mentioned.
Yes, obviously,
he's the best player of all time.
Well, I'm looking forward to it,
I think it's pressure
that I need to face.
…and, above all, face that pressure.
And the truth is that I'm very eager
to face this year, which I think
is very important for all of us.
And I believe that the Galaxy
must be respected.
In the chamber, to the right.
- Back up!
- Back up, sir.
Nobody follows us.
Oh look, there's a camera.
Please, guys!
Stay far away, please.
Beckham! Please.
Great club. Great club.
The best.
Well, not the best, but…
Love it.
Whatever it takes.
We fucking win at home,
whatever it fucking takes. Come on.
Let's go, let's go.
Just quickly, some scenarios,
just to put us on the same page.
We are dynamic, and we're quicker,
and we're faster
and we can threaten the space behind.
I think we can cause a lot of problems.
Defensive intensity.
Dejan and Riqui, between the one of you,
defend after the pass,
especially if you step to Messi
and you force him to pass the ball,
don't go like this
and start tracking the ball.
Just fucking mark him.
Because the biggest danger is
after he passes the ball,
he will find another space,
and a dangerous space.
Communicate to each other
and fuckin' battle.
This is our home, and this is
the first chance, and it's an occasion.
Let's enjoy it, and let's fucking compete.
Let's go, let's go!
- Let's play, man.
- Whatever it takes.
We fucking win at home,
whatever it fucking takes. Come on.
I appreciate the work
and the sacrifice everybody took
to get to this moment which is the start
of a new adventure together.
Leave it all on the field for each other.
They need to respect us.
At the end of this game,
everybody respects us at a different level
than they did before this game.
So let's fucking get after 'em,
and let's leave it on the field.
- Let's go.
- Let's go!
Let's fucking go! Three minutes are up!
Let's go, let's go!
This building has been full
for two and a half hours.
Only a few more minutes to wait.
Oh, my God. Oh, my God, Messi!
Inter Miami, the maybe marquee
Major League Soccer club.
The LA Galaxy.
They were the original Galácticos
of Major League Soccer.
Lionel Messi comes back to Hollywood
for a match of great significance.
We have a really important game
with one of the best teams of the league.
There are a lot of people
watching this game, and for me, it's like,
opportunity to stop
the best player in the world.
To stop Messi.
This is not an easy team to play against.
They require you to set a standard,
or else you're gonna get
blown off the field.
Messi, in particular, is just so precise
with the things that he can do
that you can't be…
you can't be one step out
or one step off or you could pay.
Greg Vanney did not mince words
before this game.
He says, "I'm tired about people
talking bad about our club.
I've never been more hungry
and also focused."
The LA Galaxy and Inter Miami underway.
Yeah, but Riqui Puig just needs
to be a little careful here
in trying to do too much.
Stay together!
Jordi Alba. Messi holds off Riqui Puig.
Yamane pokes it away.
Gómez trying to win it back.
You okay, Riqui?
Let's stick with it. Keep going, kiddo.
They're fucking che--
Come on, ref!
What are we doing, honestly?
Why no yellow card?!
Doesn't matter.
He's turning and going to goal,
he fouls him from behind.
I bet you everything that I have…
If that was Messi on the ground it
would've been a yellow.
Fuckin' amateur hour, let's go!
Paintsil is in… Is he pulled down?
He is! It's a penalty for LA!
Fuck's sake! He's fuckin'…
Absolutely, 100% a penalty.
So now a big moment for Riqui Puig.
Come on, Ric! We got it, we got it.
The key here for Drake Callender,
is to get any kinda read on Riqui Puig.
Puig… It's saved by Callender!
Remarkable! Picking it out of the corner!
A massive opportunity lost.
In the penalty kick,
Riqui has his opportunity,
and you see Lionel Messi signal
to the goalkeeper which way to go.
A thrilling first half,
except the inability to score
against Inter Miami.
You have to take your chances.
Good stuff. Good stuff, everybody,
good stuff. Come on.
Hey, Big Time. Let's go, Big Time.
You good?
It's all right, Riqui.
No, don't worry,
there's another one coming.
Focus on the game.
You miss a penalty,
there's a certain amount of embarrassment,
especially in a game that's tight.
And I think that just weighed
on Riqui emotionally.
He has to get himself going again.
It's the past.
You can't change that anymore.
Solid half but 45 more.
Remain emotionally stable, right?
Remain emotionally stable.
Don't get caught up on anything, okay?
The calls, the referees.
Stay locked in on what's important
inside the game.
Just stay locked in.
Okay? Keep digging in.
It's a fucking good half.
It's a good half. Let's punish them now.
Let's go, fellas, let's go!
Come on, now!
Beginning of the second half.
Can the Galaxy find a way through
or will that moment come for Inter Miami?
Reset! Reset!
You're okay, Riqui! Keep it there!
Go, Riqui!
Keep going! Good one!
- What pass is Riqui trying to hit?
- What?
Why is Riqui trying to hit this pass?
Play to the outside.
Come on, Ric.
Riqui's gotta relax a little bit.
- This is promising.
- One time!
Get tight!
It's left for Gómez!
It's right at McCarthy
who makes the save with his feet.
Hey, Riqui! If you're gonna close, close!
- Joseph Paintsil.
- Watch out.
- Here come the Galaxy.
- Well done, Joseph!
Vamos, vamos, vamos!
- Vamos, go, go, go!
- Forward with pace.
Riqui Puig to Paintsil.
To Riqui Puig.
Riqui takes aim…
Riqui Puig saved by Callender!
Delgado! Joveljic!
- And in!
- Goal!
Finally, a breakthrough from the Galaxy!
They needed to be more dynamic
in transition to scare other teams.
Joseph Paintsil, Riqui Puig.
They lead 1-nil.
The Galaxy are minutes away from
beginning this year with a clean sheet
against a high-powered attack
at Inter Miami.
Off the side, off the side.
Watch, watch Messi.
- Drop low!
- Take it out.
Take it out! Oh, shit.
- Messi.
- Jordi Alba,
back to Messi!
- Messi!
- Unbelievable!
…a fucking donkey, man!
I miss a penalty that, for me,
it's difficult,
but when you play
against the best player of the world,
these things can happen.
It was a really good match,
and I think that we make
a really good performance.
And now we have a lot of confidence
to start the season.
I think we are in a really good position.
It was there for us, the three points,
but the performance for the game
was excellent.
Heads up high,
we get back to work, we get after it.
We gotta keep defending like bastards,
like we did tonight
and taking our opportunities.
Onward and upward, as in,
we got a good group, ready to go.
I think we're in a good spot.
If we play like that, we are gonna beat
a lot of fuckin' teams in this league.
You couldn't ask for a better first shot.
Having the chance to kinda show everybody,
including Miami,
that we look different,
we have something different.
And I think
we put the whole league on notice.
Hey, you guys better count on seeing us
in November and December
down the stretch of the playoffs.
First game of the season.
The superclub of yesterday
and the superclub of today.
They could be meeting again
in the MLS Cup final.
Certainly the questions for Inter Miami…
how's this going to play out?
What's this going to look like
eight months down the road?
These aging superstars
in the dog days of summer,
can they sustain it?
Because history has told us
that in this league,
you better be physically fit.
If not, these young bucks,
they're gonna show you up.
That's the question for Inter Miami.
The lead-up to the big games
and the preparation for the games…
made me look back on last year.
And there were some games where, like,
what was I feeling?
What was going on in my head
in those games?
What triggered me? Bring me over the edge?
It's a head injury. And it's a yellow,
he doesn't have to come off.
What triggered me to do it
in a very nasty or disrespectful way?
You just said it's a yellow!
It's a head injury! Stop!
I feel like I let down a lot of people.
You know Matt knows better.
It's simple as that.
Matt!
Everyone has emotions
and sometimes your emotions
can get the best of you.
Matt! No!
