Young Blood
I hope he doesn't film me cheating.
Hey, Quinn.
- Hey.
- How you doing?
- Apex, baby.
- Hey, pal.
- I'm surprised…
- You got overdue already?
Yeah. Exactly, dude.
How do you got overdue activity already?
Oh, man.
Kid's already messing up.
- It's a quiz?
- A quiz?
A 20-point quiz?
You get a quiz
at the end of every three sections.
It was due six days ago.
Unfortunate.
- Hold on.
- It's gotta be it.
What? It's the same thing.
- Capital, lowercase, capital, lowercase…
- Uppercase, dude.
Oh, my God. They care about that?
- Clearly it's a pattern.
- Dude, it's a pattern.
- You couldn't get a pattern question?
- The most you can get is a 90 now.
All right. Last question.
That was D, baby.
- Okay. Let's go with that.
- A 70?
Seventy percent. I'll take it.
What?
- Seventy percent when you started…
- No. It's the first quiz.
When you started one for four,
70% is pretty good.
Yeah.
The middle one's the best.
Wow.
Yeah.
The Philadelphia Union have
signed 14-year-old phenom Cavan Sullivan
to a four-year deal through 2028
for the largest homegrown contract
in Major League Soccer history.
A player scouted
by the very best teams in the world.
Cavan Sullivan will go
to Europe at the end of this contract,
when he's 18, to Man City,
one of the biggest teams in the world.
Certainly, he's a very good player.
Man City have come out and said
he is the best 14-year-old in the world,
a generational-type talent.
People are starting to ask,
"Is Cavan Sullivan the new Messi?"
I mean, that's absurd.
It's pretty crazy some of the comparisons
people make for me.
But honestly, I'm my own player.
And I hope one day,
kids can compare their play style to mine.
I'm Cavan Sullivan.
I'm from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
And I'm…
That's a tongue-twister.
Professional football…
I'm Cavan Sullivan.
I'm from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
And I'm a professional soccer player.
Three, two, one.
And Jim, if you wanna pop in there?
All right. Ready, guys? One, two, three.
This is just the first chapter
in Cavan's career.
He's dominating in our youth academy.
Cavan has something different that… He has
that "it" thing where you go, "Wow."
"This is gonna be special."
And the time was right
to give him an opportunity.
- Am I leading the way?
- Yeah, you gotta lead the way.
You're first.
What seat am I on?
What were doing when you were 14?
Playing video games in the basement.
Any sort of professional future
hadn't even occurred to me.
I was hoping to deliver pizzas
on the weekend.
I think I'd just popped my first stick of
deodorant and called my first girlfriend.
When I was 14, I know I was damn
sure not thinking about ever going pro.
Yeah. I was thinking about who
I'm gonna take to the homecoming dance.
As a young kid with the spotlight on him…
In a lot of ways, it's unfair.
And it's a lot being thrown at him.
It feels too young.
I hope he's worth the hype.
It's a lot of responsibility for him.
I've been in and around the club
since I was a little kid.
So yeah. This is my home.
And it's an honor to sign here
for my first professional contract.
If he were to make his debut
before July 29,
he would be the youngest in
top North American sports league history.
So we're all gonna be excited. When do
we see this kid? We wanna see him play.
It's gonna be when he's ready.
I know there's concerns.
There's 5% of people
that say it's too much too fast.
And I understand that.
The reality is he's not a normal kid.
We've known that from the start.
Is he perfect? Is he the finished product?
He's 14. So I understand that he's not.
But there's no such thing as too young
or too old. There's only good and bad.
And I think we got a really special kid.
Cavan buys dinner tonight?
It's signed.
Let's get the family in there.
We are six, if you don't count the dogs.
She counts the dogs, so…
The dogs count.
Oldest, Quinn. Twins, Declan and Ronan.
And the youngest, Cavan.
And of course, us.
And everybody smile.
This is really just a soccer family.
It's not even his suit.
It's my suit right there.
Not even wearing his own suit
to his own signing.
We've always had this mantra that
our order of priorities are
family, school, soccer.
What am I doing? Holding my jersey?
Everyone's played. Mom, Dad.
Dad played professionally
for a little bit.
Mom capped
in the University of Pennsylvania.
I play for the Philadelphia Union.
But I definitely take myself
as the, you know, best in the house.
It's clearly me.
Ready, guys. One, two, three.
I just wanna say
I'm a better finisher than Quinn Sullivan.
Yeah. Soccer was in our blood from birth.
Goal!
- I mean, in the crib…
- I was gonna say…
…they had balls at their feet.
I would manipulate them,
their feet with the balls and…
For sure, it was going to be.
By 18 months,
he could catch a football with two hands.
That's four in a row.
He could kick a soccer ball,
both feet. Volleys.
It was apparent that
he was a little bit different, for sure.
You know, you weren't thinking,
"Oh, he's a prodigy." No parents that are…
At least I don't think any sane parent is
thinking that about their child
at 18 months.
That wasn't very good.
That wasn't very hard, was it?
That means you're not exploding.
You're not snapping. Do it again.
This time snap like a man!
Hard as you can!
Go!
Yeah! Yeah!
Every night after dinner,
they would kick the ball against the wall.
- Brendan would throw head balls at them.
- Yeah!
Cav is the youngest
but never wanted to be overshadowed ever
and still doesn't.
My inside and my outside.
Who taught it to you?
Me.
- You taught yourself?
- Yeah.
He was deemed a phenom
at a very, very young age.
You know, six and seven years old,
people are already talking about,
"Wait till you see this kid."
I think it was probably
four years ago. I was ten.
And my dad said,
"If you wanna be great,
you gotta be different."
So that quote has always stuck with me.
Evade!
I wanna be the best ever.
So I'll do whatever it takes.
Oh, boy.
- You know where our tent is?
- Nope.
- Yeah.
- Let's go right to there.
Oh, right there. We have the new thing
that she just set up.
- No.
- Yeah.
She's taking the angle.
Yeah. Mom's been loving it.
- She set it up yesterday.
- Bro, this is Mom.
Think there'll be dolphins today.
Me, my brothers, my parents,
we go down to the shore a lot
to Ocean City, New Jersey.
This is crazy.
This is ridiculous.
This is scenes…
Family's everything to me.
The biggest role model was my dad.
He's taught me everything I know.
- How was training?
- Good.
Good.
- Played 4v4? 5v5?
- 5-5.
- How was it?
- I was all right.
I scored a goal. We tied to 3, 5v5.
I always listen to him
for his critique and his feedback.
How'd you play?
- Fine.
- What did you concentrate on?
What did I concentrate on?
Half turn.
He was usually the first one
to give me feedback
after a game or after training.
And immediately, I took that criticism
and I put it to work.
My delivery style is…
I mean, it's brusque.
It's a good word, right? Brusque.
It's like right to the point.
Sometimes it's knee-jerk.
Hold the fucking ball!
Put something on it.
This is terrible.
That's weak.
Let's go!
My dad was really tough on us,
especially as young soccer players.
Like, why is that the play?
Fucking stupid.
They're like the little pieces
of possession you need.
If I was upset about it,
my mom would always be there for me.
And she'd have my back.
Brendan is very passionate.
Hit 'em. Hit 'em!
Straight up. Three in a row.
There have been many
not-so-fun car rides home.
I'll say I have a lot of conversations
about listening to the message,
not the delivery of the message.
Come on. Like, what are we doing?
It's not good enough for me.
If you come home,
and the dog shit on the floor,
and you go and beat the dog,
the dog has no idea
why he got his ass kicked.
If you catch the dog,
and you reprimand him, he learns.
You have to catch them in the moment
doing things that are good
and doing things that are bad.
We had it going too.
And then it's fixed.
At least temporarily, so…
My dad, my mom, they engraved in me
at a really, really young age
to be a winner.
I wanna make them proud.
I think it really would let them down
if I didn't keep going.
Ma! Where's Quinn?
I don't really have many friends,
outside of soccer.
That's honestly my whole life
but with the talent I have…
I know the work ethic
is what's gonna get me there.
- What's good, young bulls?
- What up?
- Are you guys selling something?
- Yeah.
Price?
I got cash, Cav.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yo, can you sign this?
- Can you sign this for me?
- Yeah.
- Where at?
- Just on the brim. That's good.
- Thank you.
- Wait, can you sign this too?
- A shirt?
- It's a shirt.
Don't mess up.
- Never.
- Right, what have we got, homies?
- We got lemonade, water, popsicles.
- I'll take a lemonade.
I'm never saying no to a bomb pop.
- Five dollars.
- Five dollars?
- All right. Here we go.
- Yeah.
- All right. We got change.
- It's all good.
- You sure? You good?
- Yep, positive.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
- Have a good one, boys.
- You too.
Do you know… Fuck.
It says, "Check tires."
I just got that tire fixed too.
That's why you need to buy me a car.
Well, we're working on it, dude.
Give me time.
My dream car is probably, like,
a Rolls Royce of some sort.
Cullinan? Ghost?
I don't know.
I don't know the names. Just…
That'd be sick though. Imagine just like…
That would be sick.
Two years for your permit.
No. One and a half years for my permit.
Two years for license.
I'm almost 15.
That's sad.
- What do you mean, "That's sad?"
- It doesn't sound as good.
Now you know how I felt, dude.
I didn't make my debut till I was 17.
- Even though…
- It was like a week after.
Three days or something.
- Really?
- I don't know how close it was
- but it was close.
- For sure.
That debut at 17 sounds
so much less cool than debut at 16.
Yeah, I agree. I agree.
What's the time frame on that,
for you to beat the MLS debut record?
I think it's…
if I make it before July 29th.
- Wait.
- What?
You set the record
for youngest debut in MLS history?
Yeah, youngest.
- It's pretty cool.
- That'd be pretty sick.
- Freddy Adu's record?
- I'm coming for that one.
- Yeah.
- Watch out.
They're on their feet.
In DC, a standing ovation.
The Freddy Adu era officially begins.
In 2004, Freddy Adu broke the record
for the youngest person
to play in Major League Soccer.
The youngest person to appear
in a professional sports game
in this country.
A lot of respect to him,
but it might be broken.
With Freddy Adu, we unfairly hyped him up
and put so much pressure on him.
We said he was gonna be the next Pelé.
The next Pelé.
Let's just think about that for a moment.
You talk about setting high bars…
You set the highest bar possible.
All the attention was on Freddy Adu.
He was doing Sierra Mist commercials
with Pelé.
He was doing Volkswagen.
He had a Nike deal.
He was where a lot of us
wished we could be.
Because of the expectation
that we placed on him
and where we thought
his career was gonna go,
the reality is, things didn't pan out in
the way that anyone would have expected.
Really he never had a chance
of fulfilling the expectations
that everybody put on him.
The Freddy Adu saga is over.
The question is, could Cavan Sullivan
end up being another Freddy Adu?
The expectations for Cavan Sullivan
is he's a generational talent.
The reality of sports
is you don't know what the future holds.
You can see a player at 14,
and by 18 he's petered out.
You can see a player at 14
and think he has no chance,
and by 18 he's God's gift to the game.
That expectation creates
this sort of mythic figure
versus what the player actually is.
So, now he's got to live up to
what everyone else around him
is billing him to be.
The problem is the expectation
that has been set is so high,
that even if you have
a fricking amazing career
it might be viewed as a failure.
And that's…
That's unfair.
I've been the head coach here now
for… going into my tenth season next year,
which is, in professional sports
a very long time to stay in one job.
- Hey. What's up, buddy?
- Hey. What's up?
- How are you, Jim?
- All right.
Morning.
- How you doing?
- Hi, Boss.
As quick as it can come, it can go though.
And that's what
we've really learnt this year.
We've had real success
in the last five seasons.
We've finished top five in the league.
This year though,
we've had a tough stretch.
This is our first time
when we're in a moment
where we haven't been at the top
and haven't been winning games.
- Goal!
- My word. My word.
We recognize now it's been
far too long since we've had a win.
The Union
finding themselves below the playoff line.
A shocking run for one of MLS's best
over the last five years.
It's unacceptable, how many games
we haven't been able to find a way to win.
Philadelphia will wonder
what's gone wrong.
They drop four in a row.
The players are trying
and giving everything that they can
but that's just not enough.
The Philadelphia Union succumbs to defeat.
That is the first time
they have lost five straight
in their history.
We're still nowhere where we want
to be in the table and it's hit hard.
We dug ourselves a hell of a hole,
but I do, I really do believe
we can make the playoffs.
There is a lot of pressure.
You're judged on wins and losses.
I live in the city. You know,
and I know how passionate the fans are.
They're honest and they let you know
how they're feeling.
I've been booed by 18,000 fans
in my own stadium.
This is Philly, man.
If you don't win this is what happens.
In the cutthroat business of pro sports,
sadly, if it goes bad,
no one feels sorry for you.
They find a new player
or they find a new manager
and that's,
the really, really hard part of things.
You're always one rough loss away.
That is a real pressure.
It's a scary thing.
Two v two in the middle.
All passes on an angle.
Cav's just started training
with the first team.
He's holding his own really well.
Better than I thought,
to be honest with you.
Good, Cav. Good, Cavan. Good.
There's moments during a training session
where he does something
where you go, "Okay. I can't teach that."
His talent is elite.
He's doing that now against top pros.
Still has a ton to do,
to work and improve,
but he's earned the right
to join the group.
Good ball.
- Yes!
- My God. That's a highlight.
I do worry about the physicality.
He's playing against grown men.
Like a grown-ass man with a beard.
With big hairy legs.
He's fucking headlocking him.
Obviously, they're bigger,
stronger, faster…
What are you saying "what" for?
…but if you can master
driving right at the opponent,
it's really unguardable.
I'm sure he'll get knocked around
and, you know, that's part of it, right?
But you have to find the fine line
between being the protector
and letting him do his own thing.
I have to let him learn the lesson of,
"You take too many touches,
you're gonna get hit." Right?
You all right?
You're a professional now.
You're playing with big boys.
Know what I'm saying?
We're men here. This is our livelihood.
You can tell when a guy like "Chuchu"
is getting pissed, right?
- He's been trying to get at you, right?
- Yeah.
Everybody's got to
earn their spot. I don't care who you are.
You're a new player on the team,
you gotta earn it.
Yeah, I got a target on my back
but that's… I love it.
It's another chance to show
how you can handle the other team
coming out to get you.
Cav… Good, Cav.
All right, guys. How we doing?
I don't know what you guys think
but Cavan's been much better in training,
getting up to the speed of things.
Obviously, scoring goals
for the second team gives some confidence…
Since he's signed with us,
Cavan has been splitting his time.
You know, he's been doing
a really good job with our second team.
He's been getting
good training sessions with us.
And is working to get into our 20,
and ultimately become a guy
who makes his debut.
What do you guys think of him so far
in training?
- He's been great.
- Yeah.
- Gets better everyday.
- Yeah.
Forget how old or young he is… It's…
- He sees things a little differently.
- He's seen some stuff, yeah.
- Yeah.
- And his first step is explosive.
Boy, is he explosive
when he takes it at you.
Yeah. For 14,
he can still get away from somebody.
And I love our group,
but we don't have anybody
that, one v one,
can kind of go by a guy and beat a guy.
At the end of the day, you know,
we have to win a soccer game.
That's really our ultimate goal
at a time in our season
where we're desperate for wins.
I'm gonna put him in
when I think he's ready to make an impact
and help the team.
You have to manage expectations 'cause
he's 14, and you need that reminder.
But, you know,
it's still something to think about.
Both the Spanish
and the English speaking feed
mentioned that today could have been
Cavan Sullivan's debut.
Potentially moving it to Wednesday.
Is there any truth to that?
Debut? I don't know about that.
Well, Jim Curtin said,
"Look, he's playing so well in training
but he's also going through the process
of earning his minutes."
The reality is, if the Union
can't break this winless streak,
Jim's not the kind of guy
who's just gonna succumb to pressure
and put on Cavan just to break a record.
The next step is working hard
to get your first minutes.
And sometimes that might be one minute.
That might be 15 minutes.
That might be 90 minutes.
But you have to earn it,
and I think Cavan understands that.
Okay, still a lot to play for.
We control our own destiny.
We know it hasn't been good enough so far.
The slump in and of itself
is just terrible.
Of course it puts more pressure
on the coach, that he has to win games.
And if you have to win games,
you're probably not gonna roll the dice
on your 14-year-old.
Philadelphia have never
gone winless in ten in a single season.
I don't think we're last
and I don't think we're the worst team,
but right now
that's what the table says, so…
I still think we can make the playoffs.
And it's gonna be hard, for sure.
We've put ourselves in a tough spot.
We know what we're capable of,
we have to execute on the field.
Do you think we could see
Cavan in the matchday 20 tomorrow?
Yes. Tomorrow he will be in the 20,
because he's earned that.
If you look at his performances
in the Union II games,
he's earned the right to join the group
and the 20.
And we'll see how tomorrow goes.
Quinn just gets a chicken parm,
and I've never had game day with him,
so I was just like, "All right,
give me one of them too."
I guess it works for him.
Yeah. It's pretty good.
Obviously I've had it before, but…
So, yeah. First time on the bench,
pretty cool.
I might get in the game, might not.
It's obviously Jim's decision.
Look.
"List of youngest de…" Debutants?
Debutants.
"…debutants in MLS history.
Could we see history be made tonight?"
Freddy Adu.
Yeah, obviously
I'm eager to play and get in
but I also know Jim will only play me
if the time is right
and if I fully deserve it. So, yeah.
So we got Freddy Adu, Julian Hall,
Alphonso Davies, Axel Kei, Nimfa--
And they were all 15 right?
Except for Freddy?
Yeah. Well Nimf was 16. But yeah.
Freddy's 14. Or was.
I wonder if he's aware that
his record might be broken tonight.
He is, I told him.
- You told him?
- No, I'm playing.
If it doesn't happen
it'll be a little bit frustrating
but I know that
there's one game left after this
where I could possibly break the record
for the youngest MLS player ever.
All right. I'm done. Want any?
Bro, the pasta is the most important part.
It's the carbs.
- Gotta eat the pasta.
- Eat some of the pasta.
Eat all of it.
That's good, right?
Well, bread's carbs.
At least two of those bites.
You had half a piece of croissant.
All right, now I'm done.
We're out, yo.
- Love you.
- Good luck.
- See you soon.
- See you soon.
- I'm ready.
- Ready?
- Yeah.
- Let's go.
What do I need? Nothing?
You've got a cool torture kit like me?
No, I just got my outfit, cleats.
Hopefully my shin guards there, but…
We have extras.
Are you nervous?
Yeah, a little bit.
I mean, how can you not be?
It's like what you dreamt of.
Dreamed of? Dreamt of?
Either one, who cares.
Your whole life, so…
Wanna act like I've been there before
even though I haven't.
- What's up? How are you? Good?
- Good.
So are you excited to see your jersey?
Yeah. I mean, I've seen it before.
But not like…
- Set up, the full kit.
- Yeah.
What are the odds
we're next to each other?
- We're not.
- No?
No, you're gonna be on the other side.
It's number… Numerical order.
Oh, really?
Philadelphia,
the site of a mid week MLS contest.
Tonight the specter is firmly aimed
at Cavan Sullivan.
Signed to the largest
homegrown contract in MLS history
and he could make his debut tonight.
- What's good, TJ?
- How you doing, buddy?
- Cavan. What's up, buddy?
- What's up? How you doing?
- Yo, get his ass.
- You're good.
It'll be my first time
I'll be in the 20-man roster, so…
I mean, I'm nervous. But I'm also excited.
I feel the nervous is less of, like,
shit yourself, more like butterflies.
It's really just like,
"I want this to happen already." You know?
Dude.
How do you take this off?
- What?
- Right now?
Yeah, but it's like fugazi.
It doesn't like… It doesn't unclip.
You need long nails.
No, you just gotta get in and…
The tattoo. You get that, bro?
- Hi, Heike.
- Hi, babe. How you doing?
- Good. How are you?
- I'm all right.
- It's really hot and sweaty.
- Very.
- So is he getting in?
- I don't know.
I was hoping you had
some insider information.
I don't have-- I have no insight.
You don't know how a game's gonna go.
You don't know what a coach is thinking.
Jim keeps everything tight to the vest.
So, will he debut? Who knows?
Will he do well
if he goes in there? Who knows?
So we can't put any stock in that.
Okay, guys, as always
it feels great to be back home.
We have a big fucking opportunity tonight.
All right?
Look around at this group, right?
We're finally all back together.
This is the strongest 20
we've put together in a long time. Okay?
All the fucking injuries,
the national team call-ups.
All the horrible shit that's gone against
this great group, goes out the window now.
The only fucking thing that matters
is tonight and the three points.
Every guy's together. Let's go.
Come on. Let's go.
- Win on three. One, two, three!
- Win!
- Let's go, let's go.
- Guys, time to go!
I see my MLS debut being at a home game,
being a substitute and getting
my name called and running down the line.
Cavan! Cavan!
Cavan! I'm never washing my hand!
Going crazy, maybe I get a chant.
Cavan! Cavan! Cavan!
- Where's mom and pop?
- They're over there. Look.
And finally get the board, sub in,
and it's number six.
Running on to the field
and entering the match.
Number six, Cavan Sullivan.
I mean, that sound, honestly,
plays in my head every night.
Cavan, I'm your age, bro.
No Cavan Sullivan from the
start but he could make his debut tonight.
Certainly though, we'll be keeping
an eye out throughout the broadcast.
I hope Cavan plays.
I hope so too, baby doll.
Ready, ready, ready, ready!
Here we go.
Philadelphia coming into this one
with just one win in their last 17.
Without a win in their last ten.
And they sit rock-bottom
of the Eastern Conference as a result.
Kai Wagner over the set piece.
He'll whip it into the heart of that area.
Elliott on the volley
rattles the woodwork.
What a chance there.
He fucking hit that good.
Goddamn, he hit that good.
Go, go, go.
And then Martínez!
This is a really good opportunity
for Philadelphia to take advantage.
Free… And Baribo on the doorstep!
Let's go. Let's fucking go.
On this night,
Philly are desperate for a win.
The Union off and running.
Ready, ready, ready, ready!
Come on, come on.
Wagner, subsequent delivery. And Glesnes!
Come with it, come with it, come with it.
He has Baribo to aim for. Tai Baribo!
Schmelfy's calling the 60th minute.
- No chance.
- No chance.
Too early.
Maybe for Quinn.
Maybe for Quinn.
It will be a lot of eyes
on Cavan Sullivan.
The 14-year-old who could be
the youngest player to debut
in major league team sports.
Play him.
This is trouble.
And Ian Harkes.
Who'll have a strike! Ian Harkes!
There's one back!
New England with a road back into it.
The unraveling begins.
Again.
I've still got my fingers crossed.
Someone's going in. Who is that?
Sub. Come. Sub.
Come on, let's go. Energy now. Energy.
Quinn Sullivan!
So it is
a Sullivan coming on but it is Quinn.
We're still on Cavan Sullivan watch.
See the ball. See the ball. See the ball.
He's warming up on the sideline.
He's trying to get his head about him.
Cavan! Cavan! Cavan!
Come on, Quinny. Come on, Quinny.
Doing well to break lines,
in towards Quinn Sullivan.
Edge of the area.
Now having a shot towards goal!
- Yeah!
- Fucking right! Fucking right!
That is a banger from Quinn Sullivan.
Cavan over to celebrate with him.
Let's make sure Cav's ready at 85,
all right? 85.
And the separation creates
an opportunity now for Cavan Sullivan
to become the youngest debutant
in major league team sports.
Let's fucking go!
All right. Just do exactly what
your brother just did, all right?
No, I'm just kidding. Listen.
Take a deep breath. All right. Enjoy it.
Get on the field. We need defense first,
stay organized. Listen to your brother.
He'll keep you in line. All right?
You can get in behind,
you'll see how tired they are now.
Get in behind and run at them.
Let's go, enjoy it.
Just like the backyard.
And Cavan Sullivan,
the history maker, now enters this arena.
Number six, Cavan Sullivan!
Fourteen years and 293-days-old,
breaking Freddy Adu's record.
And now he is on.
A player scouted by
the very best teams in the world.
Let's go, Cav!
Nice touch. It's okay, it's okay.
Good reaction.
Play it. Show up.
Show up.
- Just let him touch it.
- Go forward.
Now, first touch
of the year for Cavan Sullivan.
A first completed pass is to his brother.
Yes.
This is lovely stuff,
and on goes Cavan Sullivan.
Back in to Quinn.
Come, on, Cav. Better touch than that.
Show up.
Fuck you.
Move it. Move the rock.
Just move the rock.
In to Cavan Sullivan.
Can he create something late here?
Has his brother as a runner.
On goes Cavan Sullivan!
Oh, what a moment that would have been.
It's not a good shot
but it's good touching the ball for him.
- Get in the box. Get in the box.
- He's nervous though.
The referee looks at his watch
and blows time
on a dominant Philadelphia Union win.
Make sure you get this one
on the mic, all right?
Best finisher on the team.
I'm still up here.
One goal doesn't make you a finisher.
You going in to call him?
Congrats, brother. Happy for you, brother.
It would have been a storybook
if the last one went in, right?
- Shoot for a post.
- Why didn't you shoot harder?
- You okay?
- Shoot for a post.
What were your emotions
when you were standing on the sideline
about to make your debut?
Finally hearing my name called
was pretty special, I mean…
That run was just something
I'll never forget.
Good job.
Oh, dude. So happy for you.
- Come on in. In, in, in. Get in.
- I'm so glad. Guys, oh, my gosh.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, wow. That's a lot of cameras.
- No, I lost.
- I thought you didn't bet on Quinn?
Dude, what was that shot? A little weak.
A little weak.
- You could've gone all the way in.
- They showed us…
You could've gone in the 12.
- Yeah, but then he comes and blocks it.
- Nah.
And then he breaches.
I mean, obviously I dreamed of this day
and I had some pictures in my mind
of what it would look like.
But the fans, every time I touched
the ball, they went crazy and…
Honestly, like one of the loudest things
I've ever heard.
The stadium was electric.
Holy shit.
Freddy also tweeted out
his congrats. How does that feel?
I already reposted on my Instagram.
It was pretty cool to have some words
from someone like him and…
He really paved the way
for young guys like me and…
Yeah, obviously pretty awesome
to hear from him.
This is just a start.
Really happy to have done this,
but it's honestly the first box
checked off so,
long journey ahead I know.
It's all about where you finish
not where you start.
- You're done. Go home.
- Fuck yeah.
I've gotta shower.
I feel like a dirt ball.
- Me too.
- Out of the way.
My contract's up this year.
I'm hoping to stay in St. Louis.
…top of the six. It's Parker!
It's Parker!
He got the first in St. Louis CITY history
and he gets the first tonight!
The All Star, Tim Parker.
What more did I have to do
to earn a contract extension here?
But it's tough
when you're not winning games.
I'll call you after training
and let you know what's going on.
- Love you.
- Bye.
- Love you.
- Kick butt.
When you have a family
and as you get older,
it gets harder.
Hey, Quinn.
- Hey.
- How you doing?
- Apex, baby.
- Hey, pal.
- I'm surprised…
- You got overdue already?
Yeah. Exactly, dude.
How do you got overdue activity already?
Oh, man.
Kid's already messing up.
- It's a quiz?
- A quiz?
A 20-point quiz?
You get a quiz
at the end of every three sections.
It was due six days ago.
Unfortunate.
- Hold on.
- It's gotta be it.
What? It's the same thing.
- Capital, lowercase, capital, lowercase…
- Uppercase, dude.
Oh, my God. They care about that?
- Clearly it's a pattern.
- Dude, it's a pattern.
- You couldn't get a pattern question?
- The most you can get is a 90 now.
All right. Last question.
That was D, baby.
- Okay. Let's go with that.
- A 70?
Seventy percent. I'll take it.
What?
- Seventy percent when you started…
- No. It's the first quiz.
When you started one for four,
70% is pretty good.
Yeah.
The middle one's the best.
Wow.
Yeah.
The Philadelphia Union have
signed 14-year-old phenom Cavan Sullivan
to a four-year deal through 2028
for the largest homegrown contract
in Major League Soccer history.
A player scouted
by the very best teams in the world.
Cavan Sullivan will go
to Europe at the end of this contract,
when he's 18, to Man City,
one of the biggest teams in the world.
Certainly, he's a very good player.
Man City have come out and said
he is the best 14-year-old in the world,
a generational-type talent.
People are starting to ask,
"Is Cavan Sullivan the new Messi?"
I mean, that's absurd.
It's pretty crazy some of the comparisons
people make for me.
But honestly, I'm my own player.
And I hope one day,
kids can compare their play style to mine.
I'm Cavan Sullivan.
I'm from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
And I'm…
That's a tongue-twister.
Professional football…
I'm Cavan Sullivan.
I'm from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
And I'm a professional soccer player.
Three, two, one.
And Jim, if you wanna pop in there?
All right. Ready, guys? One, two, three.
This is just the first chapter
in Cavan's career.
He's dominating in our youth academy.
Cavan has something different that… He has
that "it" thing where you go, "Wow."
"This is gonna be special."
And the time was right
to give him an opportunity.
- Am I leading the way?
- Yeah, you gotta lead the way.
You're first.
What seat am I on?
What were doing when you were 14?
Playing video games in the basement.
Any sort of professional future
hadn't even occurred to me.
I was hoping to deliver pizzas
on the weekend.
I think I'd just popped my first stick of
deodorant and called my first girlfriend.
When I was 14, I know I was damn
sure not thinking about ever going pro.
Yeah. I was thinking about who
I'm gonna take to the homecoming dance.
As a young kid with the spotlight on him…
In a lot of ways, it's unfair.
And it's a lot being thrown at him.
It feels too young.
I hope he's worth the hype.
It's a lot of responsibility for him.
I've been in and around the club
since I was a little kid.
So yeah. This is my home.
And it's an honor to sign here
for my first professional contract.
If he were to make his debut
before July 29,
he would be the youngest in
top North American sports league history.
So we're all gonna be excited. When do
we see this kid? We wanna see him play.
It's gonna be when he's ready.
I know there's concerns.
There's 5% of people
that say it's too much too fast.
And I understand that.
The reality is he's not a normal kid.
We've known that from the start.
Is he perfect? Is he the finished product?
He's 14. So I understand that he's not.
But there's no such thing as too young
or too old. There's only good and bad.
And I think we got a really special kid.
Cavan buys dinner tonight?
It's signed.
Let's get the family in there.
We are six, if you don't count the dogs.
She counts the dogs, so…
The dogs count.
Oldest, Quinn. Twins, Declan and Ronan.
And the youngest, Cavan.
And of course, us.
And everybody smile.
This is really just a soccer family.
It's not even his suit.
It's my suit right there.
Not even wearing his own suit
to his own signing.
We've always had this mantra that
our order of priorities are
family, school, soccer.
What am I doing? Holding my jersey?
Everyone's played. Mom, Dad.
Dad played professionally
for a little bit.
Mom capped
in the University of Pennsylvania.
I play for the Philadelphia Union.
But I definitely take myself
as the, you know, best in the house.
It's clearly me.
Ready, guys. One, two, three.
I just wanna say
I'm a better finisher than Quinn Sullivan.
Yeah. Soccer was in our blood from birth.
Goal!
- I mean, in the crib…
- I was gonna say…
…they had balls at their feet.
I would manipulate them,
their feet with the balls and…
For sure, it was going to be.
By 18 months,
he could catch a football with two hands.
That's four in a row.
He could kick a soccer ball,
both feet. Volleys.
It was apparent that
he was a little bit different, for sure.
You know, you weren't thinking,
"Oh, he's a prodigy." No parents that are…
At least I don't think any sane parent is
thinking that about their child
at 18 months.
That wasn't very good.
That wasn't very hard, was it?
That means you're not exploding.
You're not snapping. Do it again.
This time snap like a man!
Hard as you can!
Go!
Yeah! Yeah!
Every night after dinner,
they would kick the ball against the wall.
- Brendan would throw head balls at them.
- Yeah!
Cav is the youngest
but never wanted to be overshadowed ever
and still doesn't.
My inside and my outside.
Who taught it to you?
Me.
- You taught yourself?
- Yeah.
He was deemed a phenom
at a very, very young age.
You know, six and seven years old,
people are already talking about,
"Wait till you see this kid."
I think it was probably
four years ago. I was ten.
And my dad said,
"If you wanna be great,
you gotta be different."
So that quote has always stuck with me.
Evade!
I wanna be the best ever.
So I'll do whatever it takes.
Oh, boy.
- You know where our tent is?
- Nope.
- Yeah.
- Let's go right to there.
Oh, right there. We have the new thing
that she just set up.
- No.
- Yeah.
She's taking the angle.
Yeah. Mom's been loving it.
- She set it up yesterday.
- Bro, this is Mom.
Think there'll be dolphins today.
Me, my brothers, my parents,
we go down to the shore a lot
to Ocean City, New Jersey.
This is crazy.
This is ridiculous.
This is scenes…
Family's everything to me.
The biggest role model was my dad.
He's taught me everything I know.
- How was training?
- Good.
Good.
- Played 4v4? 5v5?
- 5-5.
- How was it?
- I was all right.
I scored a goal. We tied to 3, 5v5.
I always listen to him
for his critique and his feedback.
How'd you play?
- Fine.
- What did you concentrate on?
What did I concentrate on?
Half turn.
He was usually the first one
to give me feedback
after a game or after training.
And immediately, I took that criticism
and I put it to work.
My delivery style is…
I mean, it's brusque.
It's a good word, right? Brusque.
It's like right to the point.
Sometimes it's knee-jerk.
Hold the fucking ball!
Put something on it.
This is terrible.
That's weak.
Let's go!
My dad was really tough on us,
especially as young soccer players.
Like, why is that the play?
Fucking stupid.
They're like the little pieces
of possession you need.
If I was upset about it,
my mom would always be there for me.
And she'd have my back.
Brendan is very passionate.
Hit 'em. Hit 'em!
Straight up. Three in a row.
There have been many
not-so-fun car rides home.
I'll say I have a lot of conversations
about listening to the message,
not the delivery of the message.
Come on. Like, what are we doing?
It's not good enough for me.
If you come home,
and the dog shit on the floor,
and you go and beat the dog,
the dog has no idea
why he got his ass kicked.
If you catch the dog,
and you reprimand him, he learns.
You have to catch them in the moment
doing things that are good
and doing things that are bad.
We had it going too.
And then it's fixed.
At least temporarily, so…
My dad, my mom, they engraved in me
at a really, really young age
to be a winner.
I wanna make them proud.
I think it really would let them down
if I didn't keep going.
Ma! Where's Quinn?
I don't really have many friends,
outside of soccer.
That's honestly my whole life
but with the talent I have…
I know the work ethic
is what's gonna get me there.
- What's good, young bulls?
- What up?
- Are you guys selling something?
- Yeah.
Price?
I got cash, Cav.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yo, can you sign this?
- Can you sign this for me?
- Yeah.
- Where at?
- Just on the brim. That's good.
- Thank you.
- Wait, can you sign this too?
- A shirt?
- It's a shirt.
Don't mess up.
- Never.
- Right, what have we got, homies?
- We got lemonade, water, popsicles.
- I'll take a lemonade.
I'm never saying no to a bomb pop.
- Five dollars.
- Five dollars?
- All right. Here we go.
- Yeah.
- All right. We got change.
- It's all good.
- You sure? You good?
- Yep, positive.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
- Have a good one, boys.
- You too.
Do you know… Fuck.
It says, "Check tires."
I just got that tire fixed too.
That's why you need to buy me a car.
Well, we're working on it, dude.
Give me time.
My dream car is probably, like,
a Rolls Royce of some sort.
Cullinan? Ghost?
I don't know.
I don't know the names. Just…
That'd be sick though. Imagine just like…
That would be sick.
Two years for your permit.
No. One and a half years for my permit.
Two years for license.
I'm almost 15.
That's sad.
- What do you mean, "That's sad?"
- It doesn't sound as good.
Now you know how I felt, dude.
I didn't make my debut till I was 17.
- Even though…
- It was like a week after.
Three days or something.
- Really?
- I don't know how close it was
- but it was close.
- For sure.
That debut at 17 sounds
so much less cool than debut at 16.
Yeah, I agree. I agree.
What's the time frame on that,
for you to beat the MLS debut record?
I think it's…
if I make it before July 29th.
- Wait.
- What?
You set the record
for youngest debut in MLS history?
Yeah, youngest.
- It's pretty cool.
- That'd be pretty sick.
- Freddy Adu's record?
- I'm coming for that one.
- Yeah.
- Watch out.
They're on their feet.
In DC, a standing ovation.
The Freddy Adu era officially begins.
In 2004, Freddy Adu broke the record
for the youngest person
to play in Major League Soccer.
The youngest person to appear
in a professional sports game
in this country.
A lot of respect to him,
but it might be broken.
With Freddy Adu, we unfairly hyped him up
and put so much pressure on him.
We said he was gonna be the next Pelé.
The next Pelé.
Let's just think about that for a moment.
You talk about setting high bars…
You set the highest bar possible.
All the attention was on Freddy Adu.
He was doing Sierra Mist commercials
with Pelé.
He was doing Volkswagen.
He had a Nike deal.
He was where a lot of us
wished we could be.
Because of the expectation
that we placed on him
and where we thought
his career was gonna go,
the reality is, things didn't pan out in
the way that anyone would have expected.
Really he never had a chance
of fulfilling the expectations
that everybody put on him.
The Freddy Adu saga is over.
The question is, could Cavan Sullivan
end up being another Freddy Adu?
The expectations for Cavan Sullivan
is he's a generational talent.
The reality of sports
is you don't know what the future holds.
You can see a player at 14,
and by 18 he's petered out.
You can see a player at 14
and think he has no chance,
and by 18 he's God's gift to the game.
That expectation creates
this sort of mythic figure
versus what the player actually is.
So, now he's got to live up to
what everyone else around him
is billing him to be.
The problem is the expectation
that has been set is so high,
that even if you have
a fricking amazing career
it might be viewed as a failure.
And that's…
That's unfair.
I've been the head coach here now
for… going into my tenth season next year,
which is, in professional sports
a very long time to stay in one job.
- Hey. What's up, buddy?
- Hey. What's up?
- How are you, Jim?
- All right.
Morning.
- How you doing?
- Hi, Boss.
As quick as it can come, it can go though.
And that's what
we've really learnt this year.
We've had real success
in the last five seasons.
We've finished top five in the league.
This year though,
we've had a tough stretch.
This is our first time
when we're in a moment
where we haven't been at the top
and haven't been winning games.
- Goal!
- My word. My word.
We recognize now it's been
far too long since we've had a win.
The Union
finding themselves below the playoff line.
A shocking run for one of MLS's best
over the last five years.
It's unacceptable, how many games
we haven't been able to find a way to win.
Philadelphia will wonder
what's gone wrong.
They drop four in a row.
The players are trying
and giving everything that they can
but that's just not enough.
The Philadelphia Union succumbs to defeat.
That is the first time
they have lost five straight
in their history.
We're still nowhere where we want
to be in the table and it's hit hard.
We dug ourselves a hell of a hole,
but I do, I really do believe
we can make the playoffs.
There is a lot of pressure.
You're judged on wins and losses.
I live in the city. You know,
and I know how passionate the fans are.
They're honest and they let you know
how they're feeling.
I've been booed by 18,000 fans
in my own stadium.
This is Philly, man.
If you don't win this is what happens.
In the cutthroat business of pro sports,
sadly, if it goes bad,
no one feels sorry for you.
They find a new player
or they find a new manager
and that's,
the really, really hard part of things.
You're always one rough loss away.
That is a real pressure.
It's a scary thing.
Two v two in the middle.
All passes on an angle.
Cav's just started training
with the first team.
He's holding his own really well.
Better than I thought,
to be honest with you.
Good, Cav. Good, Cavan. Good.
There's moments during a training session
where he does something
where you go, "Okay. I can't teach that."
His talent is elite.
He's doing that now against top pros.
Still has a ton to do,
to work and improve,
but he's earned the right
to join the group.
Good ball.
- Yes!
- My God. That's a highlight.
I do worry about the physicality.
He's playing against grown men.
Like a grown-ass man with a beard.
With big hairy legs.
He's fucking headlocking him.
Obviously, they're bigger,
stronger, faster…
What are you saying "what" for?
…but if you can master
driving right at the opponent,
it's really unguardable.
I'm sure he'll get knocked around
and, you know, that's part of it, right?
But you have to find the fine line
between being the protector
and letting him do his own thing.
I have to let him learn the lesson of,
"You take too many touches,
you're gonna get hit." Right?
You all right?
You're a professional now.
You're playing with big boys.
Know what I'm saying?
We're men here. This is our livelihood.
You can tell when a guy like "Chuchu"
is getting pissed, right?
- He's been trying to get at you, right?
- Yeah.
Everybody's got to
earn their spot. I don't care who you are.
You're a new player on the team,
you gotta earn it.
Yeah, I got a target on my back
but that's… I love it.
It's another chance to show
how you can handle the other team
coming out to get you.
Cav… Good, Cav.
All right, guys. How we doing?
I don't know what you guys think
but Cavan's been much better in training,
getting up to the speed of things.
Obviously, scoring goals
for the second team gives some confidence…
Since he's signed with us,
Cavan has been splitting his time.
You know, he's been doing
a really good job with our second team.
He's been getting
good training sessions with us.
And is working to get into our 20,
and ultimately become a guy
who makes his debut.
What do you guys think of him so far
in training?
- He's been great.
- Yeah.
- Gets better everyday.
- Yeah.
Forget how old or young he is… It's…
- He sees things a little differently.
- He's seen some stuff, yeah.
- Yeah.
- And his first step is explosive.
Boy, is he explosive
when he takes it at you.
Yeah. For 14,
he can still get away from somebody.
And I love our group,
but we don't have anybody
that, one v one,
can kind of go by a guy and beat a guy.
At the end of the day, you know,
we have to win a soccer game.
That's really our ultimate goal
at a time in our season
where we're desperate for wins.
I'm gonna put him in
when I think he's ready to make an impact
and help the team.
You have to manage expectations 'cause
he's 14, and you need that reminder.
But, you know,
it's still something to think about.
Both the Spanish
and the English speaking feed
mentioned that today could have been
Cavan Sullivan's debut.
Potentially moving it to Wednesday.
Is there any truth to that?
Debut? I don't know about that.
Well, Jim Curtin said,
"Look, he's playing so well in training
but he's also going through the process
of earning his minutes."
The reality is, if the Union
can't break this winless streak,
Jim's not the kind of guy
who's just gonna succumb to pressure
and put on Cavan just to break a record.
The next step is working hard
to get your first minutes.
And sometimes that might be one minute.
That might be 15 minutes.
That might be 90 minutes.
But you have to earn it,
and I think Cavan understands that.
Okay, still a lot to play for.
We control our own destiny.
We know it hasn't been good enough so far.
The slump in and of itself
is just terrible.
Of course it puts more pressure
on the coach, that he has to win games.
And if you have to win games,
you're probably not gonna roll the dice
on your 14-year-old.
Philadelphia have never
gone winless in ten in a single season.
I don't think we're last
and I don't think we're the worst team,
but right now
that's what the table says, so…
I still think we can make the playoffs.
And it's gonna be hard, for sure.
We've put ourselves in a tough spot.
We know what we're capable of,
we have to execute on the field.
Do you think we could see
Cavan in the matchday 20 tomorrow?
Yes. Tomorrow he will be in the 20,
because he's earned that.
If you look at his performances
in the Union II games,
he's earned the right to join the group
and the 20.
And we'll see how tomorrow goes.
Quinn just gets a chicken parm,
and I've never had game day with him,
so I was just like, "All right,
give me one of them too."
I guess it works for him.
Yeah. It's pretty good.
Obviously I've had it before, but…
So, yeah. First time on the bench,
pretty cool.
I might get in the game, might not.
It's obviously Jim's decision.
Look.
"List of youngest de…" Debutants?
Debutants.
"…debutants in MLS history.
Could we see history be made tonight?"
Freddy Adu.
Yeah, obviously
I'm eager to play and get in
but I also know Jim will only play me
if the time is right
and if I fully deserve it. So, yeah.
So we got Freddy Adu, Julian Hall,
Alphonso Davies, Axel Kei, Nimfa--
And they were all 15 right?
Except for Freddy?
Yeah. Well Nimf was 16. But yeah.
Freddy's 14. Or was.
I wonder if he's aware that
his record might be broken tonight.
He is, I told him.
- You told him?
- No, I'm playing.
If it doesn't happen
it'll be a little bit frustrating
but I know that
there's one game left after this
where I could possibly break the record
for the youngest MLS player ever.
All right. I'm done. Want any?
Bro, the pasta is the most important part.
It's the carbs.
- Gotta eat the pasta.
- Eat some of the pasta.
Eat all of it.
That's good, right?
Well, bread's carbs.
At least two of those bites.
You had half a piece of croissant.
All right, now I'm done.
We're out, yo.
- Love you.
- Good luck.
- See you soon.
- See you soon.
- I'm ready.
- Ready?
- Yeah.
- Let's go.
What do I need? Nothing?
You've got a cool torture kit like me?
No, I just got my outfit, cleats.
Hopefully my shin guards there, but…
We have extras.
Are you nervous?
Yeah, a little bit.
I mean, how can you not be?
It's like what you dreamt of.
Dreamed of? Dreamt of?
Either one, who cares.
Your whole life, so…
Wanna act like I've been there before
even though I haven't.
- What's up? How are you? Good?
- Good.
So are you excited to see your jersey?
Yeah. I mean, I've seen it before.
But not like…
- Set up, the full kit.
- Yeah.
What are the odds
we're next to each other?
- We're not.
- No?
No, you're gonna be on the other side.
It's number… Numerical order.
Oh, really?
Philadelphia,
the site of a mid week MLS contest.
Tonight the specter is firmly aimed
at Cavan Sullivan.
Signed to the largest
homegrown contract in MLS history
and he could make his debut tonight.
- What's good, TJ?
- How you doing, buddy?
- Cavan. What's up, buddy?
- What's up? How you doing?
- Yo, get his ass.
- You're good.
It'll be my first time
I'll be in the 20-man roster, so…
I mean, I'm nervous. But I'm also excited.
I feel the nervous is less of, like,
shit yourself, more like butterflies.
It's really just like,
"I want this to happen already." You know?
Dude.
How do you take this off?
- What?
- Right now?
Yeah, but it's like fugazi.
It doesn't like… It doesn't unclip.
You need long nails.
No, you just gotta get in and…
The tattoo. You get that, bro?
- Hi, Heike.
- Hi, babe. How you doing?
- Good. How are you?
- I'm all right.
- It's really hot and sweaty.
- Very.
- So is he getting in?
- I don't know.
I was hoping you had
some insider information.
I don't have-- I have no insight.
You don't know how a game's gonna go.
You don't know what a coach is thinking.
Jim keeps everything tight to the vest.
So, will he debut? Who knows?
Will he do well
if he goes in there? Who knows?
So we can't put any stock in that.
Okay, guys, as always
it feels great to be back home.
We have a big fucking opportunity tonight.
All right?
Look around at this group, right?
We're finally all back together.
This is the strongest 20
we've put together in a long time. Okay?
All the fucking injuries,
the national team call-ups.
All the horrible shit that's gone against
this great group, goes out the window now.
The only fucking thing that matters
is tonight and the three points.
Every guy's together. Let's go.
Come on. Let's go.
- Win on three. One, two, three!
- Win!
- Let's go, let's go.
- Guys, time to go!
I see my MLS debut being at a home game,
being a substitute and getting
my name called and running down the line.
Cavan! Cavan!
Cavan! I'm never washing my hand!
Going crazy, maybe I get a chant.
Cavan! Cavan! Cavan!
- Where's mom and pop?
- They're over there. Look.
And finally get the board, sub in,
and it's number six.
Running on to the field
and entering the match.
Number six, Cavan Sullivan.
I mean, that sound, honestly,
plays in my head every night.
Cavan, I'm your age, bro.
No Cavan Sullivan from the
start but he could make his debut tonight.
Certainly though, we'll be keeping
an eye out throughout the broadcast.
I hope Cavan plays.
I hope so too, baby doll.
Ready, ready, ready, ready!
Here we go.
Philadelphia coming into this one
with just one win in their last 17.
Without a win in their last ten.
And they sit rock-bottom
of the Eastern Conference as a result.
Kai Wagner over the set piece.
He'll whip it into the heart of that area.
Elliott on the volley
rattles the woodwork.
What a chance there.
He fucking hit that good.
Goddamn, he hit that good.
Go, go, go.
And then Martínez!
This is a really good opportunity
for Philadelphia to take advantage.
Free… And Baribo on the doorstep!
Let's go. Let's fucking go.
On this night,
Philly are desperate for a win.
The Union off and running.
Ready, ready, ready, ready!
Come on, come on.
Wagner, subsequent delivery. And Glesnes!
Come with it, come with it, come with it.
He has Baribo to aim for. Tai Baribo!
Schmelfy's calling the 60th minute.
- No chance.
- No chance.
Too early.
Maybe for Quinn.
Maybe for Quinn.
It will be a lot of eyes
on Cavan Sullivan.
The 14-year-old who could be
the youngest player to debut
in major league team sports.
Play him.
This is trouble.
And Ian Harkes.
Who'll have a strike! Ian Harkes!
There's one back!
New England with a road back into it.
The unraveling begins.
Again.
I've still got my fingers crossed.
Someone's going in. Who is that?
Sub. Come. Sub.
Come on, let's go. Energy now. Energy.
Quinn Sullivan!
So it is
a Sullivan coming on but it is Quinn.
We're still on Cavan Sullivan watch.
See the ball. See the ball. See the ball.
He's warming up on the sideline.
He's trying to get his head about him.
Cavan! Cavan! Cavan!
Come on, Quinny. Come on, Quinny.
Doing well to break lines,
in towards Quinn Sullivan.
Edge of the area.
Now having a shot towards goal!
- Yeah!
- Fucking right! Fucking right!
That is a banger from Quinn Sullivan.
Cavan over to celebrate with him.
Let's make sure Cav's ready at 85,
all right? 85.
And the separation creates
an opportunity now for Cavan Sullivan
to become the youngest debutant
in major league team sports.
Let's fucking go!
All right. Just do exactly what
your brother just did, all right?
No, I'm just kidding. Listen.
Take a deep breath. All right. Enjoy it.
Get on the field. We need defense first,
stay organized. Listen to your brother.
He'll keep you in line. All right?
You can get in behind,
you'll see how tired they are now.
Get in behind and run at them.
Let's go, enjoy it.
Just like the backyard.
And Cavan Sullivan,
the history maker, now enters this arena.
Number six, Cavan Sullivan!
Fourteen years and 293-days-old,
breaking Freddy Adu's record.
And now he is on.
A player scouted by
the very best teams in the world.
Let's go, Cav!
Nice touch. It's okay, it's okay.
Good reaction.
Play it. Show up.
Show up.
- Just let him touch it.
- Go forward.
Now, first touch
of the year for Cavan Sullivan.
A first completed pass is to his brother.
Yes.
This is lovely stuff,
and on goes Cavan Sullivan.
Back in to Quinn.
Come, on, Cav. Better touch than that.
Show up.
Fuck you.
Move it. Move the rock.
Just move the rock.
In to Cavan Sullivan.
Can he create something late here?
Has his brother as a runner.
On goes Cavan Sullivan!
Oh, what a moment that would have been.
It's not a good shot
but it's good touching the ball for him.
- Get in the box. Get in the box.
- He's nervous though.
The referee looks at his watch
and blows time
on a dominant Philadelphia Union win.
Make sure you get this one
on the mic, all right?
Best finisher on the team.
I'm still up here.
One goal doesn't make you a finisher.
You going in to call him?
Congrats, brother. Happy for you, brother.
It would have been a storybook
if the last one went in, right?
- Shoot for a post.
- Why didn't you shoot harder?
- You okay?
- Shoot for a post.
What were your emotions
when you were standing on the sideline
about to make your debut?
Finally hearing my name called
was pretty special, I mean…
That run was just something
I'll never forget.
Good job.
Oh, dude. So happy for you.
- Come on in. In, in, in. Get in.
- I'm so glad. Guys, oh, my gosh.
Yeah, yeah.
Oh, wow. That's a lot of cameras.
- No, I lost.
- I thought you didn't bet on Quinn?
Dude, what was that shot? A little weak.
A little weak.
- You could've gone all the way in.
- They showed us…
You could've gone in the 12.
- Yeah, but then he comes and blocks it.
- Nah.
And then he breaches.
I mean, obviously I dreamed of this day
and I had some pictures in my mind
of what it would look like.
But the fans, every time I touched
the ball, they went crazy and…
Honestly, like one of the loudest things
I've ever heard.
The stadium was electric.
Holy shit.
Freddy also tweeted out
his congrats. How does that feel?
I already reposted on my Instagram.
It was pretty cool to have some words
from someone like him and…
He really paved the way
for young guys like me and…
Yeah, obviously pretty awesome
to hear from him.
This is just a start.
Really happy to have done this,
but it's honestly the first box
checked off so,
long journey ahead I know.
It's all about where you finish
not where you start.
- You're done. Go home.
- Fuck yeah.
I've gotta shower.
I feel like a dirt ball.
- Me too.
- Out of the way.
My contract's up this year.
I'm hoping to stay in St. Louis.
…top of the six. It's Parker!
It's Parker!
He got the first in St. Louis CITY history
and he gets the first tonight!
The All Star, Tim Parker.
What more did I have to do
to earn a contract extension here?
But it's tough
when you're not winning games.
I'll call you after training
and let you know what's going on.
- Love you.
- Bye.
- Love you.
- Kick butt.
When you have a family
and as you get older,
it gets harder.
